Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:10 PM)

Hi gang... Let's get to it ... I'll stay a little later to make up for the missed time.... as always, all subjects answered - let's have some fun

Josh (Dallas)

What is Maclin's value with DJax likely out next week?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:12 PM)

It's high. So is Avant's... especially with Celek also a bit banged up and that bad ATL pass defense coming up.

Rob (State College)

We missed you last week. We don't know why, but we did. Dan from San Jose and I met in the chat room and commisserated...

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:12 PM)

Cool. Not at all creepy.

Mike (IN)

I have a dilemma.....I play in a league with my wife and some of her friends and husbands. This year one of her friends wanted her 12 year old nephew to be able to play...which was fine. He was in first place over the first few weeks and he was letting the trash talk fly and then he starting losing some was also confirmed that he actually cried over his last loss. I soooo bad want to post some trash talk to him asking him to post his address so I can send him some tissues, but my wife is telling me not to do it. Do I listen to my wife or post the message?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:15 PM)

Listen to the wife. The wife controls more than your fantasy team and you gotta make the smart play. Besides, talking smack to a 12 year not really that great an accomplishment.

Darelle Revis (New York)

Am I responsible for the bad weeks for all #1 receivers I match up with? Is there any receiver worth starting against me?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:15 PM)

Yes, you are and no, there is not.

Michael (Milwaukee)

If Turner sits, who is the RB you want, Snelling or Norwood?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:17 PM)

Norwood... He looked really good last week... my guess isif Turner is out, they split carries with Norwood getting more of the touches. It's telling that Snelling only got something like 4 carries...

Jonathan (Oklahoma)

Berry, I want nothing more than to come into work every day and stare at your balding facade for hours at a time. No, really. How do I get a job with you guys? I'm not just a tool with a computer - actually more qualified than you might think.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:19 PM)

Well, insulting guys in their chats is always a sure fire winner. But if for some reason HR doesn't pluck you out of this chat room and hand you a contract, here's a good place to start:

Matt (NY)

I'm not a tool either....can I have a job too?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:20 PM)

Yep, you're hired. See you tomorrow at 9

one hot mess (texas)

what's the over/ under on how many non-fantasy questions that you are going to post today? will we even hit 50/50? seriously, slaton for boldin? yeah or nay? sitting w/ hightower as RB2 with Chester Taylor and Donnie Brown as the back ups.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:21 PM)

In a vacuum, I'd rather have Boldin than Slaton (even with leinart, tho I think Warner is back this week).... but you have no RB depth, so I would not trade Slaton if I were you....

Brad (Norwalk, CA)

TMR, I'm down by 10 heading into tonight and I can start Colston or Welker, who gets me the win?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:23 PM)

Welker is more of the sure thing. Colston could (and should) have a big game, but Welker is more of the sure thing to not get shut out. If it's PPR, def. Welker. Depends on your scoring... but Welker the more consistent guy, Colston has more upside.

Mack (MA)

Brad - Whatever Berry says, go the opposite...

Hutch (Houston)

Whatd you think of my Dianna Agron lady crush for you?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:23 PM)

Too young.

Eric (Cambridge, MA)

Vince young put up 12, 14, 14, 13 and 20 points in my league since he started. i need a #2 QB so is it time to sit Hasselbleh in favor of VY

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:24 PM)

Considering MH faces SF next week and VY will be in a probably shoot-out with Indy, yeah for next week.

Fred Jackson (Buffalo)

Am I the guy down the stretch?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:26 PM)

I think so, yeah. I don't love you this week against the Jets, but you'll be a decent flex #3 RB type... Certainly, the new coach is trying to change a few things up...and he's lit a fire under TO as well

George (Norwalk, Connecticut)

Hey, I think I saw you in Norwalk a few weeks ago. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that it makes me happy that you are confident with your baldness. I have been going bald for two years now, I am 20 now. It has been tough to deal with, but people like you who are balding, yet are comfortable with it and don't wear hairpieces like most people in television make me happy. Anyways getting to fantasy, could you see Pierre Thomas having a monster tonight?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:27 PM)

I was in Norwalk a few weeks ago, checking out the ice cream that was named after me at Sweet Ashley's, so yeah, probably. And, um, thank for the backhanded compliment.Thomas is SUCH a frustrating situation. To me, he's the most talented back on the team, but Bell and Bush keep sneaking in there. My guess is many people sat Thmas because of the tough match-up and the Bell/Bush questions... so yes, he will go off just to further frustrate everyone.

Duaine (Clovis, CA)

I love your writing and dislike whiners (ie-"You're to blame for my team losing and my best dog's death). Please keep up the good work. This week, Forsett @SF or Slaton @Jax? Thanks!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:30 PM)

Aw, shucks. Here's the thing on Forsett: He SHOULD be the starter, no questions asked. Been saying it for a while. But last week, Jones was close to coming back and the SEA coaches said that Jones was the starter when he came back.If I was ranking today, I would have Forsett higher for next week. But if Jones is starting, I might lean towards Slaton. LOVE Forsett from a skill standpoint, just want to make sure he has the opportunity.

Steve (NY)

I was checking out the jobs web site and I didn't see liar/giving crappy fantasy advice as a job to apply for. Where can we apply for those jobs?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:31 PM)

That's 'cause that job is already filled. Soon as I leave, I'll give you a heads up.

Billy (Oklahoma)

Steve, you are a Yankee, chances are you probably already have a job in that capacity!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:32 PM)

fatman (orlando)

Fan of the podcast, bought the iphone / espn radio app bc of the podcast and one of the leaders in your pigskin pickem. For Week 13, who sits out of Braylon, Walter, or Avery? And why are you down on Freddy Jackson in the early game? Thought you loved the offense in the early games....

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:34 PM)

Congrats on the pigskin pick'em prowess. Say that 3 times fast. Believe it or not, I'd say Braylon. They are not letting Sanchez throw, BUF is REALLY strong against the pass, and the other two have decent match-ups. As for Jackson, I do like offenses in the Thursday games generally and I think F Jax will be ok since he is part of pass game, but NYJ better than average run defense and I'm not convinced if they get close that Lynch isn't getting the rock.

Andy (Phoenix, AZ)

Who would you say is the starting lineup for this year's "Where the F did THAT come from?!?" fantasy team? I hereby nominate Favre, Miles Austin, Vernon Davis, Cedric Benson, and the San Fransisco D.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:40 PM)

I like it. But Favre is not THAT much of a shock ... it was a good offense and a familiar system - Favre had been very good two years ago in his last season in GB...And I had Cedric Benson as a big sleeper this year because of what he did down the stretch last season in CIN.I'd say my "What The..." out of nowhere team would be:QB: Vince Young (Alex Smith runner up)RB: Ricky Williams (no one expected top 10 RB - he wasd that BEFORE Ronnie got hurt)RB: Laurence Maroney (left for dead)WR: Miles AustinWR: Mike Sims-WalkerTE: Vernon DavisFLEX: Jamaal Charles or Justin ForsettD/ST: NO

Anthony (Cali)

better waiver pickup this week = Chambers or Avant?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:40 PM)

Rather Avant this week, Chambers for season. Depends what you need.

James (South Carolina)

To Andy in phoenix: I think you gotta add Ray and Sidney Rice to that line-up and maybe throw in Sims-Walker as the flex-man

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:41 PM)

Nah, Ray Rice was a pre-season sleeper of a lot of guys, me included. Sidney Rice is a good call though.

Bob (Not Working)

As a Thomas jones owner with a solid playoff opportunity, do I keep Donald Brown as a bench RB or pickup Shonn G to handcuff jones? Much appreciated is your help.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:44 PM)

Nate and I discussed this very subject on the podcast this morning. Go get Shonn Green. You'll never play Brown over Jones and if something happens to Jones, you'd rather have the surefire starter for the Jets than hoping Brown has a significant role that week.

Will (Boston)

When was the picture of you on the ESPN Fantasy Football homepage taken?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:47 PM)

I assume you mean the one in the "Talented Mr. Roto" box that they also use for my logo. It was taken spring of 2007, a few months after I first got to ESPN.I wore my hair a lot longer than and I also had more of it. I've taken a much more recent one - that's the one they use as my little columnist mugshot. But they graphics folks are busy and I'm guessing they've decided that's not the top priority... it'll get updated at some point. But I know - it's crazy, right?

Jim (El Paso, TX)

Bell or Maroney tonight if S. Morris is active?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:48 PM)

Still going Maroney.

Dave (MI)

Rock Cartwright. Can he be good until Portis is back or is he just an awesome name?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:50 PM)

He can be good - he runs well and is a nice pass catcher as well. I think he'll be good on Sunday... he'll be at home against the Saints, who will be traveling on a short week and coming off the high of tonight's MNF game.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

Isn't it a bit sad that the best non-BCS ACC team goes to the Chik-Fil-A bowl to face what generally amounts to the #6 team in the SEC? As much as the Peach/Chik Bowl is a great game, can't the ACC line up an opponent a bit higher in the pecking order somehow?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:51 PM)

Yeah, you're looking for Heather Dinich's chat. That's next door.

Tim (FL)

Kenneth Britt should be the #1 waiver pickup this week. True or False?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:54 PM)

If you just lost Matt Ryan, then no. Depends on your needs. That said... depending who else is available in your league, he's in the conversation. He's looked great since Gage went out with the injury and I'm pretty sure VY trusts him completely now, you know?

Joe (MPLS)

I don?t why I?m asking but let?s say you?re meeting the Timberwolves dance team this weekend. I?m sure they get hit on all the time. How would you go about trying to see if one of them is actually interesting in doing something?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:03 PM)

Sorry - computer problems with the chat room. Not updating for me.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:03 PM)

Ok, here's the answer to the other guys:Yes, they do get hit on all the time. Any reasonably attractive woman does. But all that means is that they are usually pretty good at sorting out who is sincere and who is just looking for whatever they can get.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:04 PM)

So here's what you do: When you approach them, don't do it in a sexual or romantic manner. Meaning, the first words out of yourt mouth shouldn't be "What's your number" or some such. Take an actual interest in them as a person. Talk to them, be nice, ask questions, but not eager. If they blow you off or start to text or in any way behave in a manner that is impolite, immeadiately walk away. They are used to doing whatever they want and having guys fall all over themselves not caring. So don't put up with that.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:04 PM)

They will either respect you as the one guy they can't walk all over or they are not a person you want to deal with anyways. They are just not interested or a game player and you are wasting time in either scenario. You have to act as if you have no other agenda other than getting to know her and passing the time at some event. As you are leaving, you can casually ask for her number or suggest getting together again. You never know.... Ys, they get hit on all the time, but they don't say yes all the time. You have to think... you know how you walk down the street and see a really hot girl with some total loser? YOU could be that loser!

Gifford Buzzer beater (Ocean NJ)

Cotchery or Braylon rest of the year?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:04 PM)

Evan (San Fran)

If Fred Jackson is officially the man, him or Jamaal Charles the rest of the way?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:05 PM)

Kerri (Hagerstown)

We should drop FWP unless we own Mendenhall....T or F?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:05 PM)

matt (seattle)

Mr. Berry, I listen to a lot of your analysis, and while I don't agree with a lot of it, the type of analysis that I have the biggest problem with resembles the following: " I'm recommending you play Bob Smith this week because he has a touchdown in 4 straight games", and "I'm recommending that you bench Bob Smith because he failed to have double-digit fantasy points over XXX time span" - I mean, how can you stand by those arguments?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:07 PM)

What's wrong with those? It's rarely that simple - but when you only have ten seconds on SportsCenter, you can't get long winded. But what's wrong with starting a guy who has been a big part of a team's offense (or, conversely) sitting someone who has not been?

John (Ironyville.)

Berry I see that you don't say LOL. That automatically makes you my favorite fantasy advisor. Don't listen to everyone else. LOL.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:07 PM)

Yes. Always Hahaha. Never LOL. Unless you are a 12 year old girl.

haz (Scranton, PA)

Been playing matchups between Palmer and Cutler all year. Would Alex Smith or VY be an upgrade for either?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:08 PM)

Yes on Cutler, though he gets STL this week, so the staty of execution should last until week 14

Mike (San Diego)

When you talk about a reciever on a bad team being a good play because they will "throw a lot because they are down", don't you have to look at more than that? For example, why would any Rams or Browns reciever be a better play if Boller/Bulger or Quinn/Anderson are throwing the ball?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:11 PM)

That's fair and it IS a lot more than that. But I don't have that time. Well, I guess I could write a lot more, but I don't belive people want to read four paragraphs of stats on whether they should start Donnie Avery. On TV or radio or even the podcast, you have a very finite amount of time and you have to be quick with your analysis. So you give one quick thought and hope those watching / listening etc trust (because they have followed your work for a while) that you've done the reasearch that backs up PLAY Avery, even if I am only giving 5% of the reasoning.

Jared (Charleston)

Should I go out and look for another backup for Peyton since two weeks ago I acquired Warner as his backup for the playoffs?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:12 PM)

Warner will be fine.

Jay Cutler (Chicago)

Tom (NJ)

I don't agree with your assessments. Could you please recommend three other fantasy writers aside from ESPN that I can go read?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:13 PM)

I'm a big fan of all our guys here at Christopher Harris, Tristan Cockroft, Eric Karabell and AJ Mass are all terrific. Also, Ken Daube is a hidden trend. If you need more than that, you can buy a subscription, which included ESPN Insider and use promo code ESPN for 10% off.

Sick of LOSING by 5 pts each week ( USA)

So for the stretch who would YOU rather have between A Smith and VY?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:17 PM)

VY but it's very close. After Indy, VY gets STL, MIA, SD, @SEA. None of them good against the pass. That said... Alex Smith gets DET and STL in weeks 16 and 17. I have VY ahead of him because he has to face PHI in week 15 - very tough

John (CA)

Tell Tom to take all of the other whinners with him to another site and oh guess what, the other fantasy writers will also make assessments you don't like--what a dolt!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:19 PM)

Nah, it's all good. Plenty of analysis out there for everyone. I'm not everyone's cup of tea and I wouldn't want to be. You should find someone you enjoy and trust and whose thinking aligns with yours. That's not always going to be me.

Jonathan (Chicago)

Is BJacobs useless going forward?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:20 PM)

Going forward? Don't you mean continuing?... I don't trsut him at al going forward, if that's what you are asking.

Dan (San Jose, CA)

You're something I enjoy and trust and whose thinking aligns with mine. So are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:21 PM)

Hahahaha. That's a good one to end on. Thanks for stopping by everyone! New podcast is up - tomorrow, new TMR column and our Jesse Ventura interview on the podcast....
