Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Scott (St. Louis)

I do not see Matty Ice being a franchise qb any longer, was it a mistake for atlanta to take him first overall in the draft?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

How can you say that at this point? Yes, he's had some rough games this year. But he's also had some good games. I think the problems have more to do with what's gone on around him than with him. I'd take him over most QBs in the league. Welcome to the Friday chat.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Greer, Porter, Jenkins, McKenzie, McAllister, Gay, Sharper, Harper, and U. Young, Is there a better secondary than that in the NFL right now?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

I can't think of one that deep.

Scott (St. Louis)

The NFC South is just an awful division. Saints are going to win the division, can we talk about something else? Who do you see getting into the 2 NFC wildcard spots?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

Sorry, Scott, but NFC South is my territory and I've got to stick with it.

Dwayne (Nashville)

I've been a Saints fan for 25 years and I can truly say that this is the FIRST and only time I can say that I trust the Saints. Trust them to win the games their supposed to win. Trust them to play hard until the final whistle, to FINISH! Now I know how it feels to be a Pats or Steelers fan! Geaux Saints!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

Yep, truly is a different Saints team.

George (New Orleans, LA)

With the success Gregg Williams is having this year, people are talking about how he may be a possible head coach for one of the teams that will be in the market for one. I was under the impression he signed a 3 year contract with the Saints - is that something that could work to keep him down here for another season or two?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

Not sure of the structure of the contract, but it's generally common courtesy not to stand in the way of a guy getting a head job.

Jim (MS)

Hi Pat! As a result of his recent comments is Antonio Bryant out next year and do the Bucs go FA or draft to get a better receiver? Thanks!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

If his bags aren't packed, they should be. I think you'll see the go both FA and the draft for WRs. This team is about Freeman now and they've got to build around him.

Tom Brady (Foxboro)

The crowd noise in the dome was ridiculous. I'm lobbying for the Brady rule 2, that penalizes the home team when their crowd is that loud. Think it will pass?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

Probably not. My left ear was ringing until Wednesday night from that. Seriously. But great to see a stadium loud and proud like that.

CollegePark4Life (College Park, GA)

Last week J. Abraham called out the secondary and said some people were not being adults and didn't know there play book but the coaches left them in. Who was he talking about??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

Not sure exactly and don't want to throw out names, but I think you can read between the lines of his comments and come up with some good guesses.

michelle (new orleans)

does jeremy shocky have a girl friend he is hot? lol what are your superbowl picks if you had to pick?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

I really don't know. Right now, I'd have to say Saints and Colts.

Greg (Tampa)

Do you see any of the under-performing players wearing the Franchise Tag in the NFC South being with their teams next year (Bryant, Peppers)?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

No on the first one. Second one, probably not -- but it will depend on who's calling the shots after the season in Carolina.

Bill (Laplace, LA)

Pat, what did you think of Mckenzie's play on Monday, and does he stay on the team after everyone hurt returns?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Remarkable, especially when you consider he's been out of football for nearly a year. I don't think it's realistic to expect that from him every week, but it was one heck of an effort. And, yes, I think he'll be with the Saints the rest of the year. Good guy to have around as a player and in the locker room.

Tyler (ATL)

Pat does the Falcons defense have to play there best game of the season sunday to win and help redman?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Yeah, I think that would be a fair statement and I also think the coaching staff has to coach a great game.

Dan (Toronto)

Josh Freeman is starting to look like an absolute stud. I think the bucs need to address the Defensive line Hard in the draft. Suh or McCoy with the first pick, DE in the second round, and then with the bears pick, perhaps get Freeman a weapon in the passing game or at running back. What do you think of these names. Golden Tate, Jahvid Best, Mardy Gilyard. Thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:10 PM)

Totally on the same page with you. Let's forward your thoughts to Mark Dominik.

Kurt (Gainesville, FL)

Pat, what do you see the Bucs doing as far as a DC for next year? Do you think they will hire someone who has a scheme closer to the Tampa 2? That seemed to do the trick last week with Raheem at the helm.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

Let it play out a little. If defense continues to improve with Raheem running it, maybe they should just stick with that.

Matt (Liberty University)

Well Pat, Panther fans have been calling for moore to start over Jake all season and they finally get their wish. I remember you saying that you don't believe he is a starting QB in the NFl. Besides inexperience, what is wrong with his game?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

He's not all that talented. There were reasons why he wasn't drafted and why Cowboys let him go. But, hey, let's give the guy and chance and see how he does with the opportunity. Maybe he surprises everybody.

Rob (Houston)

Is Matt Moore the Panther's QB of the future?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

There's really no way you can realistically say that at this point. If coaches thought he was that, he would have played long ago. But like I said, let's see how he does. He might surprise.

Loren (New Orleans)

Possibility of snow here in New Orleans today. With the Saints sitting at 11 - 0 and projecting a deep playoff run and now snow... is hell freezing over?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Might be the case. Miserable here in Tampa today, too. It's about 54 degrees, frigid for us, and raining hard right now. Hope Washington's forecast is a little better. I've got to fly there tomorrow.

Drew (Mpls)

How does someone like John Fox gone from highly regarded head coach to dog house so quickly? I guess the question is - do head coaches skills actually deteriorate or is having a terrible QB going to sink him? It seems short sighted but seems to be the mode of operation for many teams across professional sports. So now they hire Coordinator X and he takes them to the playoffs, then Williams and Stewart get old and he gets axed so they hire Coordinator X and he takes them to the playoffs, then...................zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

Sadly, it's just the nature of the business. It truly is a "what have you done for me lately?" business. Fox is a good coach. But I think he might have run his course in Carolina. He can get a head coaching job somewhere else pretty easily.

Matt (Liberty University)

Well Pat, Panther fans have been calling for moore to start over Jake all season and they finally get their wish. I remember you saying that you don't believe he is a starting QB in the NFl. Besides inexperience, what is wrong with his game?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

Well, I'm no statistical wizzard, but off the top of my head, I'd have to say the odds have to be a little better than that.

me (here)

The auto update is off on this chat. I have to keep refreshing. Is the problem on my end? Am I the only one?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

Anybody got advice for this reader? I don't handle the technical end of this, so I really can't give an answer.

Zack (St. Pete)

Joe Barry d coordinator for Bucs next year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

I think that's something that will at least be considered. Probably makes the most sense of anything.

Matt (Liberty University)

Julius Peppers...yes he is good but he is wasting way to much of Carolina's cap space. I don't see him in Carolina next year but my question is will Carolina get anything for him. Can and will they franchise him and try to trade him again. We can't just let him go for nothing!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Again, I think there are too many unknowns to answer this right now. Depends on who is making the calls in Carolina after the season.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Hey Pat, How has your thoughts on the coaching staffs and front offices changed for the NFC Stout teams since the beginning of the season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Gotta rank Payton and Loomis as best combination right now. By far. They've made some great moves.Dimitroff and Smith second. Fox and Hurney third and Raheem and Dominik fourth.

Little Buddha (Parts Beyond)

What did you think of Sedrick Ellisa?? first (and hopefully last) foray as a ballcarrier?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

Tell you the truth, I honestly didn't see it. It was crazy in the Superdome and I had my head down and was writing. Doesn't sound like I missed much.

Bill Cowher (NC)

How will I look on Carolian's sideline next season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Saying it, again, Bill. I don't think you're destined for Carolina.

Mike Buckley (San Francisco)

Please tell me that Jabba the Delhomme is almost through...this guy stares down receivers like Jamarcus Russel stares down frozen burritos!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

I think it's safe to say it's over for Jake in Carolina. Or will be soon.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Can you give us the biggest surprise, good or bad, so far, for each team this season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

How 'bout I do a blog post on that some time in the coming days? I wouldn't be able to do it justice and give enough thought to it right here when I'm trying to stay up with the rapid-fire questions.

Wayne (Md)

If next season is uncapped, do you think the Panthers cut Delhomme?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

I think they cut him either way. Or he retires.

daman9080 (Alexandria, La)

Hey Pat, love the blog. Have you checked the weather for Fedex Field? Snow on Saturday and clear and in the 40's by kickoff. I see this as an omen for the saints to go undefeated. No one anywhere had been talking about the weather being an issue and I thought that I would just bring that up.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Yep, well aware of forecast. I'm trying to dig out my winter jacket and gloves before I fly tomorrow. But clear and in the 40s isn't that bad. Saints are pros and they should be able to play in that.

Little Buddha (Parts Beyond)

Shockey was a bit upset after the Pats game because of his limited oppurtunities. Do you think this was a result of the Pats gameplan or was Drew just not looking his way?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:27 PM)

Game plan and what was available. Can't argue with the success Brees had in spreading the ball around.

Dominic (UNC)

I think you and I would both agree that unless Moore shows something to us soon, there will be a new QB in Carolina next year. Will there be any good free agent QBs after this year or do you see the draft as the answer?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

The FA class isn't very good right now. But that can change with guys getting cut after the season. Safe to say Carolina, no matter who's coaching, will have to go out and get a QB.

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

Pat,Hey there seems to be a conspiracy theory out there that Jake's finger really isn't broke. It was a made up injury so Fox can bench him without hurting his pride in front of the public. What do you think?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Don't buy it. Fox doesn't think like that. He's a pro and Jakes a big enough man to take it. They don't have time to make up excuses like that. They've got too many other things to worry about. Besides, did you see the picture the Observer had? You could see the swelling.

Little Buddha (Parts Beyond)

Does Jake Delhomme make the Panthers' HOF? Regardless, will he be better remembered in Charlotte for his big wins or his precipitous decline?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

On overall contributions (forget this year), he's best QB they've ever had.

Mike (New Orleans)

For your biggest surprises blog, i know its easy to point to the saints defense, but i think the biggest surprise has been payton's playcalling and his willingness to stick with the run. Just an idea.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Good idea. I'll keep that in mind.

Dan (Toronto)

Herm Edwards as DC of the Bucs next year? I think he wants he wants back in the league. What a great fit it would be for both sides in my opinion. I see a lot of Herm in Raheem.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Hmmm, makes some sense. Wouldn't rule that one out.

Jeff (Lansing, Mi)

Pat, the Saints kicking game worried me a little last week. Are the Saints gonna ride out Carney's (old leg), or will they switch before the season is out?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

Think they're playing it by ear. Obviously, they must be a bit worried about Carney and that's why they've kept second kicker around.

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

I thought the picture in the CO didn't show much swelling. Looked kind of like a normal finger that was band-aided to the index finger... :)

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

To me, it looked swollen. Yes, it wasn't an exteme closeup, but I'm sure the photog got the best shot available. Again, I looked at it and my first reaction was, "it's swollen". Again, these are pros we're talking about. I know the conspiracy theory is out there, but I don't think these people have the time or desire to be that creative. As Fox says, it is what it is.

Bill (Laplace, LA)

Pat, I read an article somewhere, that the Saints will cut Reggie at the end of the year. What are your thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

I think that's reasonable speculation, given his contract and his production. But I really doubt the Saints have made any decision on that. They're busier with bigger things right now and can deal with that after the season. Besides, there are ways around that, like adjusting Reggie's contract. It's not like he's got a lot of juice right now and can command huge money on the open market.

Mike (Ohio)

Pat, did you see that? Devery Henderson just ran through the chat. He is still wide open.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

Good one.

David (Fairax, VA)

Any insight into the health of the Falcons' o-line? Are Sam Baker and Harvey Dahl going to be able to start against the Iggles?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

My gut says Dahl will be out and I think Baker plays.

Matt (LU)

Scenario: Moore plays outstanding for the rest of the season (I know its ot likely) along with the whole team. Does Fox keep his Job?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:37 PM)

Moore would really have to be outstanding.

Little Buddha (Parts Beyond)

Where are the Falcons fans today? Polishing their Michael Vick memorabilia?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:37 PM)

Could be.

Richard (Ann Arbor)

Can't see Sean Payton easily parting ways with Reggie Bush. That's his guy, after all. Can Morris lead the Bucs to a better defensive showing when they face the Saints again?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

Agree with you on Bush. Yes, Morris can help that defense play a little better in the rematch. But I have a tough time anyone truly shutting down Brees and that offense.

Rum (N'awlins)

Hey Pat, any idea of how many, IF ANY, of the guys that visit this chat and GUARANTEE a Saints loss every come back?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:40 PM)

Actually, the guy (can't remember his name right off) who guaranteed Bucs would beat Saints did have the courage to send a note to the mailbag.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Pat true or false: The Saints are one big hit to Brees away from being in trouble? I don't want it to happen because I like the guy and never root for anyone to get hurt but want to know what you think.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:41 PM)

I think they could get by with Mark Brunell for a game or two. But wouldn't want to see that for an extended period.

DJ (Englewood, FL)

I am a longtime BUCS Fan. This season has been over for a while, I have been hoping for close games but still having the BUCS lose so we get better draft picks. So far they have loss the close games which is a good sign that with some new talent next year we may be a playoff team again. Who do you think the BUCS will take if we get #1 pick?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

If it's not a DT, it's a big mistake.

Zack (St. Pete)

When do you start your draft research?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

February because I'm tied up with day-to-day stuff now. McShay and Kiper are the ones who stay up on draft all year.

Ryan (Napa, CA)

Missed most the chat due to the World Cup draw. Pat, do you watch much soccer?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

No. Sorry, I respect soccer, but just never have been a fan.

Mark H (Greensboro, NC)

Based on Matt (LU)'s scenario, if Moore plays out standing for the rest of the year, I think that would be a reason TO fire Fox. By the way, Fox officially declared Jake out.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

Yeah, I see your logic there. Wow, Fox went ahead and did what everyone else knew was coming for days? How 'bout that?

Jim (BRLA)

I don't buy Bush leaving at the end of the season. He wouldn't command a lot in FA, and He makes lots of problems for opposing DC's. I say he stays as a backfield reciever and slot reciever, where he shines.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

Agree.

William (california)

Be honest should Freeman have started day one?? Would Bush be a good fit with the BUCs?? They do need some speed on that offense??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:45 PM)

No, I think they made the right call with Freeman sitting. They could have gotten him hurt or ruined his confidence by playing him early.

Lee (NC)

Yo Pat and Richard from Ann Arbor. Bush is making the money of a 2nd pick in the draft. He is definitely not worth that right now so they ARE gonna let him go.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

Like I said, I think there are ways to make it more tolerable financially and it's not like anybody else is going to offer big money to Bush.

Ryan (rockmart)

I know the falcons are still in the mix of things, but thinking ahead what do you see as there biggest need in the next draft an end that can actually get to the qb or a decent cornerback, i know smith likes the idea of a consistent pass rush to help the secondary

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

Gotta be a pass rusher. No doubt.

Ryan (Napa, CA)

Sammie Stroughter. Next year's number 1? I mean the Bucs have no one else besides Winslow. They gotta let Bryant go!!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

I think that decision's already been made.

STEVE SMITH (charlotte, nc)

Yea, I watch soccer. But I have bigger needs right now...aka a new QB!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

Yes, you do.

R.Street (Manilla, Philippines)

Hey Pat,Concerned fan here please answer my question...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

What's your question? I didn't see it.

Anthony (Californ-i-a)

Does Talib play this week? if not i see a big day for Steve Smith, moore is gunna look to him first and i dont know if the bucs have anyone else who can cover him effectively

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

I'm guessing he sits.

Kim Deal (Bakersfield, California)

A little fantasy insight: do you think Robert Meahem's recent production is a function of his talents and overall production of the offense or more Brees taking what the defense gives him? I guess what I'm asking if I can trust him to start on my team over Nate Burleson. Gosh, Meachem sure has been active in the red zone!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

It's no fluke. Meachem has worked hard to improve. Plus, he's earned Brees' trust.

Greg (Tampa)

Old Man Ronde is having a Decent year. Think he will play next year or time to hang it up?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:51 PM)

Probably not his call. Think that'll be up to coaches and front office.

Mike (Jacksonville, Fl)

Any chance the Saints rest players if they win the division this weekend.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

Just my take: I don't think you do that when you're chasing 16-0. Besides, they've got to stay ahead on the home-field advantage battle.

Mike (Jacksonville, Fl)

Hey Pat you do the best blog, thinks for being in the NFC South!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Thanks. Wouldn't trade it for any other division.

Cody (tiny cubacle)

Oh...and Pat, as a fan of yours Im curious: What kind of vehicle do you drive?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Is that you, Dan???

Greg (Tampa)

Are you going to be at the Carolina/Tampa game this sunday?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

Nope, I've been assigned to Saints at Washington.

Bryan (West Tampa)

Hey Pat: Any chance Parcells gets another call from the Glazers this offseason?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

No, think I'm safe in saying that's not going to happen. He's stood this franchise up two times, which is two too many times.

Ryan (rockmart)

your not with flacons eagles that seems to have a bigger storyline this week?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

Our Len Pasquarelli will be staffing that game.

Mark (Houma, LA)

Why is Darren Sharper being overlooked in the MVP discussions. He made the defense better and gives the offense a short field making them better. Isn't that what an MVP does.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:57 PM)

I think Brees is MVP, but I'd vote Sharper for Defensive Player of the Year. Two more questions before I have to sign off.

Chris (NC)

T.O in Carolina?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:58 PM)

You seriously think there's even a chance Jerry Richardson would do that???

Little Buddha (Parts Beyond)

Thanks for the time today Pat. Any blogs upcoming on rookie contributions this year in the NFC South?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:59 PM)

Yes, that went up at 1 p.m. today. Take a look at the blog.

R.Street (Manilla, Philippines)

Also, Pat, what do you think of Bobby Hebert's very energetic reaction? I find them seriously hilarious. LOL!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:59 PM)

Bobby Hebert's great. A fun guy and a good guy.

Cody (tiny cubacle)

yeah.....i mean....Nooooooo.....I was guessing Ford Truck...or a Mini Cooper...Anyway, you may not get told enough, but your blogs keep me alive at work!

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:00 PM)

You'd be wrong on both guesses! Way wrong.

JM (Charlotte)

Pat please tell the Falcons fans that if they don't want Matty Ice anymore, Carolina will take him!

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:01 PM)

Excellent point. All right, we're past my 2 p.m. cutoff. Got to run. Thanks for stopping by. Enjoyed it.
