Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hi everyone, let's get rolling.

Vincent Gagnier (Quebec)

is it possible that Philip Rivers and Drew Brees meet at the superbowl? And did the Chargers make the good move by going with Rivers???

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

I think it's possible. Both teams have a decent chance to get to the Super Bowl. You can say losing Brees hurt, but Rivers is the face of the organizaiton so you can't argue against him.

Mike S (CT)

Bill, does the fact that Oakland is starting Bruce Gradkowski indicate that they are finished with JaMarcus Russell? As bad as Russell has been, I can't find any other reason to bench him for a guy like Gradkowski. A lost season like this seems to be the perfect time to give someone with any potential the chance to improve.

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

For this season. I think the team is going to move away fro, Russell. You don't make that huge move unless you are about done with a guy.

Mike (redmond, oregon)

what is the latest with Tom Cable's off the field situation. That story just seemed to die. I'm hopeful it gets resolved and he is retained. He is doing a good job (my opinion) in trying to turn the culture, and is ever the optimist. They just need a few more players

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

It's been quiet since ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that he likely wouldn't face a stiff penalty. I think it's about over.

Drew (LA where the chargers are moving!) [via mobile]

Love the blog Bill I look for updates 20 times a day. How important is it that the Chargers get the 2nd seed in the AFC? Can they beat the Patriots in Foxborough? The Bengals in Cincinnati?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

I think it's huge. You play one less game and all you need to do is win one home game before going to the title game. It's giant.

Brian (Fishers, IN)

Any thoughts on the likelihood of my Chiefs adding Charlie Wies as OC next year? Would this be a good or bad idea?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

I think it's one of the real possibilities for Weis. I think it would be a good fit. His presence would help Cassel

Matt (AR)

What do you think the Chiefs record will be at the end of the season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

Let's say 4-12. Hey it would double their win totla form last season.

Ryan (NJ)

Hey BW, Despite Denver's history at Arrowhead in December (1-16 all time). Do you still see them winning and continuing their post season push?

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

It's a pretty nasty histroy for Denver. But the Broncos are the better teeam so they shguld win. But I don't thin it will be overly esy.

Julio (San Juan PR)

great work with the Blog bill! most important game for denver for a 11-5 record?

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

A win at Philly in Week 16.

Lance Harrison (San Diego)

Hey Bill love your blogs, What do you picture as the final AFC playoff standings?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

Just for fun folks. SD: 11-5Den 10-6Oak: 5-11KC 4-12

Vijay (NYC)

What are the Broncos thinking about Kyle Orton's long-term future with the club? He seems like a good stop gap until McDaniels trains a younger, more athletic replacement.

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

I think the team will try to re-sign him. I think he could be Denver's QB for the next three eyars or do.

steve (fallbrook, ca)

what will it take to lose the title "worst division in football"?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Getting two teams to the playoffs. But, Steve, I think the division is on the mend. The NFC West is worse than this division, in my opinion.

Brian (Illinois)

People need to keep in mind that when Brees was released from the Chargers, he came off a shoulder injury and was untested. Only two teams made a play at him so that should show how much of a gamble people thought he was. Kudos to the Saints because their gamble in signing him is paying 100 fold.

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

I couldn't say it better, Brian ... Everyone is happy in this deal. Well, other than Miami that went with Culpepper instead of Brees.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Are the Broncos a playoff team? I just can't figure them out.

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

I think so, Matt. But they ahve to beat KC twice and Oakland at home to get there. They can't do another Washington-type stumble. That loss may end up being a killer.

Shawn (Toronto)

Bill, what do you think the Chiefs biggest offseason need is? A KC reporter suggested its safety due to lack of speed in the secondary. Mike Brown has been spotty and Page is on IR but I see a leaky o-line and dismal pass rush as bigger priorities. What do you think?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

I say the O-line is the biggest need.

Wayne (Topeka)

Do you think Todd Haley is too much of a hot head to be a great coach? I like some of the things he does but I wonder if is prone to losing perspective on game decisions when he's ready to erupt.

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

He's an emotional guy. He hasn't been out of control yet. So I don't see it as a problem.

Tarek (NYC)

Should the Raiders worry more about there D in the first round of the draft next year? 1st round QB's are more miss than hit.

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

Or the OL.

Mike (KC)

Every mock draft I've seen has the Chiefs selecting Eric Berry in the 1st round. While I think Berry will be a pro-bowl caliber S, I think the Chiefs have to select LT. They will never get a return on their Cassel investment if they can't protect him and imagine how good Charles will be with some decent blocking. Finally, a LT would allow them to move Albert to his ideal position, LG.

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Mike, mock drafts are difficult to gage before we even know the draft order. Berry is a beast and we have seen top safeties have major influences on defenses. He would be difficult to pass up. But the Chiefs may be picking in the 5-10 range, so they may not get the chance to pick Berry.

Powers B (Arlington, TX)

What is your honest assessment of Norv's coaching abilities to this point of the season? Is he coaching the Chargers to their full potential, or is the current streak and record more of a product of the talent the Chargers have on their roster in spite of Norv's coaching?

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

I'm a Turner. At this point, how can you not? The guy is doing a great job right now.

Ryan (Monterey Bay, CA)

Hey Bill, this question may be a little early, but based on this seasons play alone, who do you think gets resigned by AJ this offseason? With Merriman making contributions in the run more so than pressure, and Jackson emerging as a top flight reciever, and Cromartie playing solid, who goes and who stays?

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

I think Jackson will be the priority. Just a guess.

Tarek (nyc)

Bill, why haven't the raiders use the wildcat more often this season? Wouldn't this help McFadden and Bush get some running lanes?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

You're right, it might give McFadden a spark. He needs one. I think it's a good idea.

Korey (Fort Wayne)

Matt Williamson suggested the Broncos need to start with Brandon Marshall when addressing their 3 key free agents (Orton, BM, Dumervil) on his chat this week. I think Dumervil is irreplaceable and Marshall would be 3rd on my list. Who would you go with?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

With your order, Korey. I love Marshall as a player. But his off-field history is too much to overlook. Big-time pss rushers are dificult to come by.

Mike (Cincinnati)

What are the chances that Michael Vick is the starting Qb in Oakland next year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

I gusss it could happen. The Raiders were never really big on him this year. But with Russell showing he can't do the job, There may be some inteest.

Ryan (NJ)

Does Denver make the playoffs this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

Again, win the games they are supposed to win.

What do you think of Brandon Siler? He has been much more productive than Cooper in only 3 three starts.

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

He's a big, playmaker. I like him. But I also like Cooper.

Steve (Tallahassee)

Do you think the Chiefs should stick with Studebaker to evaluate him the rest of the year even if Vrabel is ready to return?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Yep, he is an interesting talent. The future in K.C. is all about the young guys. Studebaker needs a chance.

Ron (Oak town, CA)

Bill, keep up the good work. How do you see the Chargers doing during that nasty upcoming three game stretch: @ Dallas, Cinci, @ Tenn.?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

Thanks, Ron ... yeah, that Titnas' game is a lot tougher than it was a month ago. San Diego needs to win two of those three games.

Aaron (CR)

what potential does Brandstarter have for Denver??.. i didnt see him much in college.. Can he be a decent QB in the NFL??

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

Maybe. But he needs a lot of development. But the team likes him.

Ted (Bend, Ore)

Bill, what are the odds that the much maligned AFC West gets two teams into the play-offs?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

San Dieog and Denver are both on pace now. So it's looking decent.

Jeff (MSP)

Chris Simms or Jamarcus Russel?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

Russell. At least, he is younger and has more time to show he can be soemthing. Simms is about done.

John (SD)

If ur SD arent u still terrified of NE coming to town, we've seen this before when SD was better (LT was dominant) and NE was worse (pre-moss and welker)? As J. McDaniels said NE is confident

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

The Chargers would feel pretty good about playing New England at home, I'd think.

Peter (KC)

thoughts on Tyson Jackson vs Aaron Curry including how they would fit in KC scheme, right choice or wrong choice by Pioli?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

I liked Curry in April and I like him now.

Drew (LA) [via mobile]

Who do you think the chargers will lose to if they go 11-5? Is that good enough for the 2nd seed?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

I think Dallas and Tenn. are going to be tough places to win.

Jason (Parker, CO)

Why do you think Harrison of Pitt's got the larger fan vote over Dumervil for that position in the Pro Bowl? How many broncos do you see making the PRoBowl this year? I see Dawkins and Dumervils as definites, but other than that it's questionable. MAYBE Royal at KR.

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

Harrison has earned he rep ...I think Denver's Pro Bwol candidates are Clady, Weigmann, Dumervil, D.J. Williams, Bailey and Dawkins on the top of my head.

Keith (Springfield, MO)

Do you see the Broncos locking up Elvis Dumervil before the end of the season? I see a franchise tag in his future if he isn't locked up.

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

One way or another, he is staying.

Vinni G. (Qc)

The Colts really don't want to meet the Chargers in the playoffs......SD is on Fire

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

And they have owned (Sorry, coach McDaniels) the Colts in the playoffs.

Scott (Charlotte, NC)

BW, love the blog. Will Ryan Harris make a big impact when he returns? (Denver was hurt with Polumbus at that RT spot). Thanks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

I think Harris is a big key. He'll help a lot.

Jack ((Boston))

Bill-great work, I always look forward to your info. In your opinion do you think Jay Cutler would have done things different if he could do it all over again? and would he have been successful in McDaniels system?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

I bet he would, Jack. He looks lost these days. It's been a stunning turn of events for his career.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

What would have to happen for the Broncos to take the AFC West title from the Chargers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

The Broncos would need to steal the Eagles' game and hope the Chargers stumble in their tough three-week stretch.

Jim (NO)

After seeing how loud the Superdome was on Monday night, do you think it is the best homefield advantage in the NFL?

jeff (san diego)

can nate kaeding or janikowski win offensive player of the year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

Right now, yes.

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

On the kicker question, I just don't see it.

Tom (Simi Valley, CA)

Hey Bill! We're just trying to have a m-----(blanking) chat here!

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

Cranky much, Tom?

Jim (Poway)

How much of an impact do you think Jon Runyan can make on an offensive line that has been suspect at times, and on LT's stats?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

He'll give veteran stability and eladership. He could start as soon as the Dallas game.

Scott (Charlotte, NC)

Bill, love the blog. Will McDaniels' brash attitude be more likely to attract FAs and keep his current players or the opposite? Thanks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

Thanks, Scott. I know jeff Fisher indicated that it could hurt McDaniels in free agency, but I don't buy that. Players like fiery cohces. Plus, if McDaniels offers a fre agent a $1 more than the other guy, most free agent will go with the money.

Joel (California)

Moreno or McFadden?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Right now, you have to go with Moreno. He's been better.

Jim (Poway)

If there was one underrated MVP on the Chargers who would you pick and why?

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

How bout all the backups who had to play because of injuries. They've done well.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Great hour, everyone. Enjoy Week 13. Talk to you next week.
