Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Hey chatters, thanks for coming by. Sorry about yesterday, but Iverson carries more clout. Let's get started."You're gonna make me cry. What poem is that from? Is that James Joyce?".

Bob (Austin, TX)

Thorpe, I look forward to your chats all morning, and I get hurt and sad when you don't show. I know it's not your fault, but how can you or espn let us know when you will be chatting?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Sorry Bob. Last week I had to get ready for the holiday, we had 20+ here on Thanksgiving, and yesterday the Iverson story broke. I normally update people on my Facebook page.

David (Dallas)

In a blow out like last night's game against the Nets, can you think of any reason why Beaubois wouldn't be in the game for the majority of the second half?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Yes I can. Many. Perhaps Carlisle was working on building lots of confidence.

jason (VA)

Hey thorpe..wut do you think the cavs need most to put them over the top and do u see them meeting this need by the seasons trade deadline?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

A big shooter. Same as always. How many three's have their big hit, combined? One?

JP (Lausanne)

Should we revised Noah's ceiling upward (more in the range of 12 - 15-5) rather than 10-10 (which has been somewhat of a consensus about him)?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

I think we've always said his scoring range was about 12-15.

Noah R (Miami Fl)

Hey good afternoon david! Love to join your chats! How come John never wants to answer heat questions? does he have a personal vendetta with them lol?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

My guess is he gets over 1500 questions a week and just misses the one's about Miami. But he did answer at least one yesterday (yes, I read every word that guy writes every day).

Noah R (Miami Fl)

Beasley is showing so much potential, do we have a shot at the home court advantage if him and wade and j.o. keep playing the way they are?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Probably not.

Glenn Overall (Memphis)

Good idea or not? Lawrence Franks as GM and Head Coach for the Memphis Griz.

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Not, yet. He's better I think with veteran teams. But he wouldn't be terrible or anything like that. I hope he takes over a strong franchise and wins 60 games next year.

Benny (Indianapolis)

Do the Pacers have the worst backcourt in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

They are in the running.

Bill (St. Paul)

David, love your work, how do you see Oden Developing, will he ever make people like me (and Kevin Pritchard) look good for preferring him over Durant?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Probably not, but he'll still be excellent.

Eddie (Hoboken, NJ)

Hey Thorpe...I sleepwalk too...go look in the oven! What do you think of the development of Gallinari? Future star, solid regular, bench player?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

I think Stepbrothers is a classic. It has really grown on me. Gallo will be a solid regular, possibly a star.

Jay (Denver)

Have you read Bill Simmon's Book Of Basketball yet? If so what did you think?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

No, I have a dozen or so non-fictions to plow through first, but I'll read it soon enough. I may save it for my next trip. It looks great.

Mike (Portland, OR)

I think Brandon Jennings is some kind of Kenny Anderson/Tiny Archibald hybrid. And I'm not sure if that's a great thing. Who do you compare him to?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I've been saying Isiah Thomas.

SB (SacTown)

How long are you going to hold Tyreke back? He and LeBron are the only two guys in the league averaging 18.5, 5, 4.5! Stop hatin' move him to number 1 in the rookie rankings

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

He could get there, sure, but remember, he's playing almost 40 minutes a night. I can't just look at raw numbers, but you can.

Chad (Walnut Creek, California)

Mr. Thorpe, where do rank Kendrick Perkins among the best defensive centers in the NBA. We know how Dwight Howard feels about him.

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

No player can do it without a great scheme behind him. That's just the way it is. But Perkins, today, is a top 5 guy.

Glenn Overall (Memphis)

Last week you described the Griz rookies like this - ?UGH?. Notice any improvement and would you change that to at least a lower case ?ugh??

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Sam Young is looking much better. I watched him last night. 3 good games in a row for him.

Lawrence (Sacramento, CA)

Hi coach, I love listening to you on the radio here, and I read everything you write, so I'm coming to you with an important question. Since Evans is not a shooter, and he needs a shooting guard who can light it up from 3, but does not need the ball in his hands alot, and since Kevin Martin is the most efficient shooter/scorer in the NBA for 2 guards, why is it that people think the Kings should trade him?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Mostly because they think Evans is a 2. I think he can learn to be a scoring one, and I'm not sure he won't be at least a decent shooter by seasons end. I like his demeanor a lot.

Venkat (India)

Can we officially label Brandon Rush a bust?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

As a late lottery pick, probably not. Many of them do not pan out.

Wilt (Atlanta)

Which team leads the league in points of turnovers and fastbreak points?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Atlanta?

Christopher (Germany)

Is it safe to say that Steve Nash has regained his status as best offensive pg in the league. He has been imcredible since Gentry took over.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I'd choose Paul, but Nash is a miracle to watch.

Angus (Beijing)

So what about those Nets, eh? I can rationalize their uselessness in most cases - but what is up with Courtney Lee? He's been utterly awful, no?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Not awful, but definitely bad. I'd guess he has a better December.

Pierre (New York)

I'm a Nets fan & last nite we made the record book for worst start but I don't think the roster is bad as the record shows. In 2010 the nets will have over 20+ mill but in this league where every1 looks at wins

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

I think their future will be good. Lots of changes coming, probably.

Leandro (Miami)

I am a Heat fan, if we could trade for either A.S. from teh Suns or C.B. from teh Raptors who would you trace for and why?? I just dont see C.B. play with much heart and passion as A.S.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Do you agree with this? E= MC(squared).

Joe (Austin)

What do you think of DeJuan Blair so far? Inconsistent minutes, but is this about what you expected?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Yes.

Ludwig Hasbauer (Germany)

who says no: nocioni and martin for kirilenko and korver+ a pick?? the jazz save alot money via this trade..

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

The Kings see Kevin as just a notch below the top 15 guys or so in the league, when healthy. They are not going to trade him for cap space.

Rob (Charlotte, NC)

Thorpe, do you have a Facebook or twitter account?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Yes, both. David B. Thorpe on Facebook. @coachthorpe on Twitter.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Yes, both. David B. Thorpe on Facebook. @coachthorpe on Twitter.

Scott (Santa Barbara, CA)

The Clippers are going nowhere fast. Dunleavy needs to be fired, but that alone isn't going to turn the team around. Should they just blow it all up and go with a youth movement built around Griffin and Gordon? Maybe try to dump Kaman, Camby, and Baron for some youth and shorter contracts.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

I expect some deals to be done there, if winning is important. They have some good assets.

Josh (Atlanta)

The numbers indicate that Lebron is now a proficient jump shooter. Do you buy it?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Yes.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Yes.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Yes.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Yes.

Sachekevious (Greece)

What do you make of Golden State's improved play(especially Monta Ellis) sans head coach Don Nelson?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

What we see is what we get.

Jesse (Raleigh, NC)

Thoughts on JJ Hickson's development?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

He just needs to play, play, play.

Jimmy (Syracuse, NY)

Who gets the vote for most surprising rook? Jennings? Lawson?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Casspi, Thornton, Collison.

Mully (Oakland)

Can you explain to me the logic behind playing CJ Watson more minutes than Stephen Curry?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

If they think Watson helps them win today, then yes.

Paco (LA)

What are the chances Kobe, Gasol and Bynum are all-stars this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Solid.

Brian (CA)

Pau Gasol is the best PF in the world right now.

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Indeed.

Bijan (Florida)

The numbers indicate that this chat interface is a bust. Do you agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

To early to say.

Jeff (Utica, NY)

Shouldn't the Sixers have kept Andre Miller? He was a steady influence on the young kids.

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Not at the price he wanted. Too expensive for a babysitter.

Tim (Tampa, FL)

Hi coach, your chat bio says that your training center is in Clearwater. Are you not at IMG anymore?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

No. We recently parted ways. Amicably. The drive was just getting to be a burden for me-75 minutes each way at minimum, and they are focusing more on their junior business. With Mike Moreau at the helm, they are in a masters hands.

Mike S (CT)

David, what do you think of Boris Diaw's level of productivity now that he's no longer on his infamous ice cream diet?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

One of the secrets of this league, which is not so secret, is that conditioning is a huge part of the equation (see Gasol, Marc).

FJ (London)

Would you trade Brandon Roy for Chris Paul and viceversa? (may be add an extra asset from Portland to the deal)I like the prospect of a CP3-Rudy backcourt and the lobs to Oden, for NOH is a matter of securing a franchise player for 5 yrs instead of the 2yrs left on CP3's contract.

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

If I was Portland, yes. But it won't happen.

Ludwig Hasbauer (Germany)

if the jazz give the knicks pick?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

So the Kings get Kirelenko, Korver, and a top 5 guy. Can the top 5 guy score 25 a game while shooting 42% from 3 and lead all guards in ft attempts? However, if the Kings fear that Martin will always get injured, then it makes great sense.

Jay (North Jersey)

The nets will win a game this year, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

At least 15.

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Or, maybe 9.

John McGee (Santa Barbara)

David Thorpe (12:12 PM)"Mostly because they think Evans is a 2. I think he can learn to be a scoring one, and I'm not sure he won't be at least a decent shooter by seasons end. I like his demeanor a lot."come on man, he plays one minute per game more than the guy you have at number 1. if you want to not have him at the 1 spot thats fine, but at least give a legitimate reason as to why that is

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Jennings leads all rooks in PER. Evans is 5th. Jennings is tops in win shares too.

warren (florida)

Marc Gasol.... find your way to the Heat!

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Excellent call.

Paco (LA)

Your thoughts on the Tiger fiasco?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

I feel this way about all athletes and entertainers. I don't pay them any mind beyond their field of employment. I don't buy cars because they endorse them, or food, watches, or clothes. If you do, then I understand why you'd care. My kids have to look up to their parents, and we'll use all sorts of great stories to inspire them to be better people. Tiger is an example of talent plus extreme work ethic equals great golfer. And that's all I have to say about that.

Blazermania (Portland)

Andre Miller too expensive? The Blazers got a heck of a deal, and get out early if it doesn't work out.

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

I meant for Philly.

Josh (Knoxville, TN)

Does ESPN require its writers to use Twitter?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Not that I'm aware of.

Pierre (Sac)

If Evans keeps playing the way he has the past 5 games, and Jennings keeps playing the way he has the past 5 games could Tyreke overtake him for the ROY, or did Jennings 55 point game pretty much wrap up the award for him in November.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Evans has a great chance to be the ROY, one game will not win anything for anyone.

Joe (Detroit)

Opera blows you pretentious #@*#, this isn't the 1500's.

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Joe, I can not stand country music. It sounds like cats crying to me. But I think it's great that millions of people find joy in it, and that artists can nourish their soul (and their bank accounts) by creating it and performing it. But then, that's the difference between you and me.

Eric (Indy)

The players aren't saying anything, but Jim O'Brien is clearly losing control of this Pacer team! Is he gone along with Larry Legend after this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

I don't agree at all.

BB (Tulsa)

What are your thoughts about Artest's revalation about drinking during games?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

I am numb to anything he says.

guinness (New York, New York)

Ok, enough questions about Tyreke and Jennings. Lawson should be getting more talk about what he's accomplished with the Nuggets!

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Read my latest rookie report. He's amazing.

Harry (Babylon)

Will Coach D'Antoni's rep take a hit this year or will he still be a drawing card for potential free agents?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

A bit of both. Nash playing so well, and NY being so bad, has to have an impact. But players like the top FA's love playing for him, it seems.

Sean (Orlando)

As much as I like Jameer Nelson, and his obviously superior skill level to JWill and AJ, the Magic offense just seems to click better with the pass first guys running the show and letting the scorers score. I know it would bruise his ego, but watching the Magic the last several years, Jameer just seems like he would be amazing as a first guard off the bench when some of the other stars are resting and he could be one of their main offensive weapons while on the floor with their more defensive oriented bench guys. Its not that I don't think he's starter quality player but on a team full of guys who need the ball, a pass first PG just seems to fit better and Jameer's assist numbers have never been very impressive. Agree? Why or why not?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

They are a top 10 offensive team, and were missing Lewis for half their games. They r fine.

MC Welk (SLC)

Who are your top 5 rookie PGs after Jennings and Tyreke?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

is my report up yet?

Tim (SacTown)

Will Jason Thompson make the Soph squad at the All Star Weekend this year ?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

He's a lock as of now.

Damien (Indianapolis)

Is Hansbrough good enough to be the starting power forward for the Pacers down the road?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Probably better suited coming off the bench. If he can learn to be a legit 3 point threat, then possibly.

Matt (Chicago)

Do you think James Johnson (Bulls) has the potential to be a starter?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

It's unclear, but not as a 3 in Chicago. Deng is their best player. Again.

Shawn (Rochester, MN)

Hi David. How do you think Jonny Flynn has played so far this year? Also, is the triangle a good fit for Flynn/Sessions/Jefferson/Love?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

He's been dynamic at times but still has lots to learn about managing an offense. The offense is not great with those 4, needs better post play overall-Love will be a big help when he comes back. I'm higher on them than most, once Love returns.

dan (toronto)

i know american sports writers at espn don't watch raptors games but how can you have derozan so low on the rookie rankings. he plays hard everynight, has a mean first step that he's beginning to use, is not forcing his game, and has learned to recognize the back door cut and scores consistenly off of the alley-oops it produces. how can he truly be ranked behind maynor, hansborough, anderson, budinger, douglas or brown? you have to be kidding me!

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Dan, we may not watching all the raps games, but you are not watching anyone else. Currently, DeRozan is 22nd in PER and has a TS % of 52.

Ben (Albany)

would conley be better in a half court team like the blazers?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I don't see why. He was excellent last night in a fast game in Minny.

Marcialonious (Transylvania)

Philisophical question: As a coach of a losing team withno chance at the playoffs would you continually play your vets major minutes to try and eke out wins or give your young players alot of run knowing they'll make mistakes that might cost games?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

No one is eliminated from the playoffs yet. Remember Portland's win streak a few years go?

Mark (Chicago)

Who is the slowest player in the NBA? I say Aaron Gray.

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Before the Jordan Russell one on one game, let's feature a race with Gray, Brad Miller, and the Collins twins.

Andy (Portland)

Will oden make the soph team all star weekend?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Lock it down.

Shawn (Rochester, MN)

Hi David. Rumor is that the Wolves will pursue Rudy Gay this summer as a FA. Good move? How much would he improve the core of Jefferson/Love/Sessions/Flynn/Brewer?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Gay is an enormous offensive advantage over Brewer, a minus on d.

Matt (Athens, GA)

If Bogut stays healthy, a huge if, can the Bucks sneak into the 7th or 8th spot in the East?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Yes.

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Yes.

Tim (CT)

Hey David, hope all is wellJust wondering what your thoughts are on Vlad Rad, Mikki Moore, AND now Turiaf getting minutes over Anthony Randolph... is there any hope for this kid or do I have to pray he gets traded in order to see him get any consistent minutes on the court? Are you as frustrated as I am???

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

He's hurt right now.

GP (Minny)

David - thanks for doing the chats. Just one person's opinion - it's nice that you pull for your clients, but it hurts your credibility when you promote them as being better than they really are? But what do I know, I'm a Wolves fan :)

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

I try hard to be objective at all times. And understand this-some of the players I train are with me a total of 2 weeks. It's not like they are my best friends. I'll not apologize for loving my long time students, but it does them no good to write pretty things about them when they are playing ugly. So I try not to.

Mathieu (San Francisco )

Thorpupine, happy December! Did the Nuggets luck out and get the rookie pg that best meets their needs, or is the talent and potential of Rubio, Jennings & Flynn just that much better than Ty's?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Lawson is absolutely perfect.

Venkat (India)

The Pacers need a wolf. There are too many sheep on this team.

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

I think Bird would prefer a 2 who can shoot and score in bunches.

Darren (Los Angeles)

Help us Nets fans! Terrence Williams is pretty good at everything except shooting. How can the Nets new coaches keep him from taking so many shots and focus on passing and defense?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

By benching him for every long shot he takes.

Kelly (Salt Lake City)

They have pretty much flown under the radar but Utah's rookies, Wesley Matthews and Eric Maynor have played big this season. What's your take on these guys?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

I love Maynor, and Mathews has been good. Maynor is going to be a rotation guy for a decade.

Mickael (France)

What are you thinking about Joakim Noah, is he the next great thing for Chicago?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Not "great thing", but all-star candidate is a strong possibility. He might be the best help defender I've seen this year, and he's already a terror on the glass.

Mark (Charlotte)

When will you guys at ESPN stop using self-made formulas to form opinions. PER doesn't even evaluate defense unless it's awarded a steal or block. It's not the be all end all of statistics.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I use it, and a few other formulas created by non-espn related people.

Galway (SF)

Thorpe, you skipped last week's chat just so you didn't have to talk about Noah getting ABUSED by Oden, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

No. Oden can overpower almost anyone when he's on the floor.

kev (sacto)

throw in maynor and the kings would jump at the trade you were talking about earlier.

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

I think the Kings must be thrilled with Beno and Sergio, both are playing at a high level. But maybe you are right, perhaps the Kings would trade Martin in that scenario. They have argued hard that Evans is a pg, so that's why I have a hard time believing they will suddenly trade their best player and move Evans over.

Chad (Wisconsin)

Who do you think is the best scorer in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Melo, Wade, Kobe, Bron, in any order.

dan (NJ)

which former gator would you rather have anchoring your front line? noah or horford?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

That is the correct question. I've been a Noah guy for 4 years, and I'll stick with him. Wouldn't it be great to see them start together?

D (Sac)

Do the kings have a shot at the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Yes, but a very weak one.

Marcos ((Puerto Rico))

I'm a Suns fan and I'm very worried about Earl Clark...He have so much potential but looks lost and like he dosn't care? Will he be only a good defensive player or should I still hace hope?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

I'd be a bit worried. He needs a lot of tough love to be good.

Brian (NJ)

I hate it when people diss PER because it doesn't account for defense. PPG, Assists, and Rebounds dont account for defense either, but nobody is calling them totally useless. PER, like every other stat, is simply a tool to use to evaluate players. Why can some people get this?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

They do when the numbers support their players, and bash it when it does not.

gabe (sac)

does omri casspi have a chance to be in the rookie squad at all-star weekend

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

He's a strong candidate as of today, but lots can happen.

Marcialonious (Latvia)

What do you think of Nellie's decision to play Anthony Randolph primarily at center?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

I actually like it. He needs to learn the game from the inside out.

dj (chicago)

Deng has clearly stepped up but Rose is the Bulls' best player. His ankle finally looks healed and he is doing things he did all last year which is great.

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

He looked like his old explosive self last night, but he's never had the numbers that deng has right now, and has had in the past. Rose may have more upside, sure, but he's not there yet. People have to stop thinking that he is.

Chad (Wisconsin)

So is Melo finally in that group for his overall play or just his scoring?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Just his scoring.

Tom J. (Ny)

Coach, why don't you do tv color commentary? It seems a natural thing for you because you can explain the little things that fans would love to see if we only knew where to look?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

I'd rather be home most nights with my wife and kids. Maybe in 20 years, and my wife can travel with me.

David Thorpe
  (1:01 PM)

Time to go!! Thanks everyone and I'll be back next week. Be safe!
