Which was the best state football game?
I thought all four on Saturday had something that kept them exciting, but my favorite would probably be the Montini-Joliet Catholic game. It looked as if early Joliet Catholic was going to roll, but Montini came back. And for Montini to win the game by going for two points, that was a great way to end the game.
How would you rank the Catholic League teams to end the season?
I know Providence won the Catholic League, but I ended up putting Loyola ahead of the Celtics in my final rankings. I rewarded Loyola for giving Maine South, the best team in the state, its toughest game of the season. So, I would go Loyola, Providence, St. Rita, Mount Carmel, Brother Rice
Who do you think some of the surprise basketball teams might be this season?
I'm not sure how much of a surprise it is now, but Notre Dame has a pretty good team. The Dons showed that last week as they beat Mount Carmel and won the Lane tourney. I also think Riverside-Brookfield is a team that will be put together a nice season again. Richards is another team that has lost some players, but will have some new ones quickly put them back on the map again.
who's the top team coming back next year
I think Glenbard West and Wheaton Warrenville South will be right there again with what they return and what they have coming up. St. Rita has star running back Jahwon Akui returning. Joliet Catholic has a number of its talented running backs coming back. Of course, I wouldn't count Maine South out of any discussion.
How good is jordan walsh and tommy schutt?
Both are elite players. Jordan Walsh was among the best offensive linemen in the state this season and has certainly boosted his recruiting stock. Schutt is still growing into his body, but you can already tell the skill is there.
If the school didnt shut down, could driscoll compete and win against the state power houses such as maine south wheaton warrenville south mt carmel and st rita
I'm not sure if Driscoll could have beat the state's biggest teams, but it definitely could have held its own and been a contender for state in its class.
Will Matt Perez be better suited for defense or offense at the next level
I think his best bet is at running back. His 40 time is good, and he can really change his pace. Defenders really had a hard time taking a good angle to get him this season because of that. I'm curious to see how he does at the next level. The Big Ten is a different animal, but I think he has the ability to succeed. He wasn't one of those backs whose yards were inflated because of their offensive line.
do u think a lot of high school athletes use steriods
I'm sure there are some -- some have tested positive through the IHSA's testing -- but I don't believe there are a lot. I think the pressure to do so increases as they enter college and beyond. Plus, I think the drugs get more accessible as more people around them are doing them and others begin offering them later on.
How did Cary-Grove get so Lucky and Beat a team that was clearly better then them?
I don't think Cary-Grove got lucky at all. Cary-Grove proved itself time after time during the playoffs that it belonged among the elite in the state, and in the end, the Trojans showed they were undoubtedly the best team in Class 6A. Their ability to run that option will go down in the history books. I also don't think it takes away from what Providence did this season. The Celtics had a great year as well.
How good is illinois football, does it compare with other states such as ohio texas florida and california
Illinois football produces some great talent, but I think if you look around at the rosters of the top-25 teams in the country you'll see other states produce even more of it. I think Illinois football is competitive, has some great teams and does develop some very good players, but football is king in Texas, Florida and a few other places.
How good will Robert Gregory as a senior? Will he be one of the more highly recruited players in the country?
I think Robert Gregory has the chance of being really good. He has already shown great poise and ability as a sophomore. He will need to continue to improve to become one of the more highly recruited players in the country. The potential is there, though.
is basketball in Illinois the best in the country
It's among the best for sure. Just as you can look at the top-25 football rosters around the country and see other states represented, you see Illinois very well represented in basketball. You have guys like Sherron Collins, Jon Scheyer, Mac Koshwal, Evan Turner, Demetri McCamey, etc. in college now. You also have Illinois-born players drafted almost every year in the NBA.
Does Cary-Grove finally desreve the credit that they have not had since 04?
Cary-Grove deserves a whole lot of credit this season. The Trojans had their skeptics, including me, early in the season, but they proved themselves throughout the year. They were fun to watch on Saturday. Alex Hembrey, especially, put on a show.
does the dupage area have the best football in the state
It's hard to say "the" best. It's among the best. I think the Catholic League, East Suburban Catholic, DuPage Valley, North Suburban Lake and a few others were all full of competitive teams this season.
Can Hembrey go D-I if he wanted to?
I really don't know. A lot of Division I football recruiting is based on a stopwatch. I'm not sure what Hembrey runs a 40 in, but I haven't heard his name much in Division I discussions. He certainly can play somewhere, though. He's a gifted running back.
Can the trojans do it again next year?and can cary-grove be called "title town" this year?
The Trojans will have a tougher task at it next season with all they lose from this year's team, but Bruce Kay has shown year after year his program has the ability to reload. I'm not sure how much Cary-Grove will get early next season, but it could be a sleeper again. ... As for "title town", sure, go for it.
