Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks! We've got a big weekend with a Showtime doubleheader (Bradley-Peterson/Darchinyan-Rojas) and an HBO tripleheader (Diaz-Malignaggi II, Ortiz-Diaz and Vitali Klitschko-Kevin Johnson). Should be a tremendous weekend. So we have plenty to discuss. And don't forget to check out the new big notebook, all of the previews of the fights from this week and the news stories and blogs. Let's get to it, but don't expect another record-breaking five-hour chat today like we did last week.

Dan Jr (Las Vegas)

What do you think is holding up the Floyd-Pac fight from being finalized?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

It's a gargantuan fight. These things take time to sort out all kinds of issues. Be patient. It will get done.

Thom (Holton, IN)

The possibility of Angulo vs The Love Child has to put a smile on your face.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. It doesn't really. I don't think my son has much of a chance against Angulo.

Walter (Albuquerque, NM)

Which do you think HBO will give more priority, Williams/Pavlik or Williams/Martinez 2?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I don't think it's one or the other. I think both are viable fights it would be happy to televise if the promoters can work things out. With what Williams' promoter Dan Goossen saying Pavlik-Williams now has to be a 50-50 split, I think that means there is no way it happens if he sticks to that. Pavlik still generates more money than Williams and I can't see the Pavlik side doing a 50-50 deal.

Neil (Boston, MA)

DTM! Lifeblood of my fridays at work! I see that Jerry Jones has upped his bid and Arum is said to have cut the choices down to MGM or Dallas, are you hearing this as well? Cant wait for tomorrow night especially with Bradley/Petersen! Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Arum won't make the final call. He has a partner with Golden Boy on the fight and they have to agree. So we will see.

Garth (CT)

Greeting's Dan, great weekend to be a boxing fan. While I hate the counter-programing every fight has meaning and should be exciting. Looking forward to see how Ortiz and Darchinyan bounce back and if Kevin Johnson can pull off the upset. I give Bradley the edge against Peterson and Diaz/Malignaggi is a toss up. Let's get it on!

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I agree with everything you said.

Corey (Morgantown, WV)

Just caught your notebook - that's horrible about Pascal-Diacanu IIany possible way to catch this potential gem anywhere obscure online? We freaks need our Friday Night fix

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

OK, Freaks, some good news. I just sent in an update to the notebook. Here's the deal: Pascal-Diaconu was supposed to be live on ESPN360.com (which is awesome -- just got it in my area). However, because of the weather in Canada and some technical issues they couldn't get it set up. HOWEVER -- you can still see the fight because it will now be televised on ESPN Deportes on Saturday night on tape delay at 8 pm. It's better than nothing. Fortunately, I get ESPN Deportes, so I can watch it on television. I hope you do to.

Andrew Brusca (Woodside, NY)

One of the judges for Diaz/Malignaggi 2, Tom Miller scored John/Juarez 1 a draw along with Gale Van Hoy. Is there any chance in hell Miller scores the fight in favor of Malignaggi? I have a feeling Miller is going to be the Pierre Benoist(119-110 Williams) of this fight. Is Malignaggi already down a scorecard a day before the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I don't know how he will score it but I know the Malignaggi camp objected to Miller being on the panel for just that reason. They didn't win their objection.

louis (long)

Have u seen any sparring of Kevin Johnson in preparation for his fight? Do you think he has a chance? I think he is being totally overlooked.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Kevin is a good boxer with a really good jab. But his resume is devoid of a notable win and he has never really been tested. Now he is going in with either the best or second best heavyweight in the world on that man's turf in Europe. He has a massive uphill battle. I see no reason to pick him and think Klitschko probably takes him apart. But you never really know until the bell rings. Gun to my head, I think Klitschko dominates.

Sean (NJ)

Dan, any reason Richard Schaefer was so turned off the the Dallas idea? Your article made him sound pretty bitter.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I don't think it was Richard's call. He takes his marching orders from Mayweather and Al Haymon. If he bailed on the Dallas trip he probably didn't do it without them telling him they weren't going to fight there.

Joey (Knoxville`)

Hey, Dan, why are guys like Paulie Malignaggi and Juan Diaz given so much press? I don't question their hearts or their skill, but neither guy has power. I'm scratching my head over this one.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Why do you have to have power to be a good boxer and an interesting personality? I know neither guy can break and egg, but I like watching them fight and I enjoy their personalities. And they are very good at what they do. There is certainly room for fighters like that in this sport. And I thought their first fight was a good fight.

Brian (North Carolina)

Even though Mayweather's camp had no intention on fighting in Dallas he could have at least had his reps talk with Jerry Jones and not stand him up like that. Another reason Floyd doesn't understand anything business wise other than putting money in his pocket. Hopefully Jones doesn't turn sour on holding a Boxing event there in the future, I think it would be a great atmosphere.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Agreed.

MaceintheHole (Denver)

Elin Woods has been installed as an early 3 to 1 favorite over Tiger. Reaction? I hear they are using Reyes gloves and small ring...

Jeyson (philadelphia)

Dan great pick by voting the prince into the hall.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Thanks. I voted for him because he deserves it in my opinion. You may not have liked his personality but for several years he was THE dominant force in the featherweight division, the clear cut champion with many defenses and an economic force in a division that had never seen money flow like that before.

john everyman (a little place called AMERICA!)

Hey Dan, I recently read your blog in which you outlined the stagnet status of two very good welterweights: Luis Collazo and Joshua Clottey. I was curious what your thoughts are on matching up the two. Could it happen? Would it be a fight worth watching? And would the bout generate enough interest to make it happen? (please excuse me if you have addressed the status of one or both of the fighters since)

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

It would be a pretty good fight and give the winner a really good win on his record. But I don't see it happening. Collazo is in limbo with a mandatory shot due or at least one at an interim belt. Clottey will be back in January on a Top Rank card Jan. 16 and then may fight Mike Jones on HBO.

Sean (Baton Rouge, LA)

Whats the status of Roy Jones Jr. ? Is there any news regarding if he is going to retire, go ahead with the Hopkins fight (due to what B-hop said following the fight)? I heard talk about a rematch with Danny Green is there any truth to this? I am not interested in hearing hes done, he can't fight, hes washed up etc etc. Until he goes out on his back I won't accept the latter.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

You don't have to accept it but it's reality -- he's done. And, by the way, do you recall him going out on his back against Tarver and Johnson, a fight that he was so badly knocked out in it literally took him about 20 minutes before he could leave the ring under his own power? The fight with Hopkins will not happen. If the Green people want to fight him again and folks in Australia would pay for it, I guess he could do it. But Roy's days of significant fights are over whether you want to believe it or not.

BradSpitt (Milwaukee, WI)

Any word on Wynn Properties constructing the 30,000 seat outdoor venue just for Pac/Mayweather? I love the MGM, but I like my chances getting tickets with the former scenario, than to watch it closed circuit....your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I am told there is not enough time between now and the fight to build the outdoor stadium. Had the fight been in May, like it should be, it might be a different story.

Eduardo Navarro (Mexico )

Dear Dan, do you think a Marquez - Pacman III should and could happen? and if so, what is your thoughts on that one?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Nobody gives a crap about that fight right now with Mayweather looming. Eventually? I suppose it could happen, but certainly not any time in the near future.

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

Bigger event of the year candidate in your opinion, Pac-Hatton or Pac-Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Definitely Pacquiao-Cotto.

Isai (OKC)

Is it wise for HBO to hold a card on Mar. 6th, the same weekend as the opening second round fight for the SM tournament?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

HBO does not schedule around Showtime or vice versa. They go when it is best for their network. Get a DVR.

bill (pgh)

DTM is Richard Schaefer getting any heat from AEG to have Money-Pacman in one of their facilities?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I don't know about heat, but they are close and I am sure they have some frank discussions.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, as an LA resident, I'm very excited to hear that AEG offered $20 million to put Pac-Mayweather at Staples. You hear anything about them having a chance? I know taxes are a problem.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I believe it is very unlikley to be in LA unless the tax situation is addressed.

Randy (NYC)

If you have PBF on your show, do you ask him about Tiger Woods? What kind of a show is Joe Buck

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

It's the worst piece of crap talk show I have ever seen. Makes me long for the days of the Chevy Chase show. It is the KO Nation of talk shows. I thought Floyd's segment was awful, and not because of Floyd. Buck is the only interviewer I have ever seen make Mayweather look boring. I don't see the show lasting much longer.

Bing (Philly)

Your thoughts on that one scorecard of the Williams vs. Martinez fight? People I know thought it was ludicrous. Having not seen the fight, I still reminded them of a line you wrote on here about you can have a close fight but still score a shutout and be within reason.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

The 119 scorecard was a joke. The crowd was booing the scorecard before they even knew who won. It was horrible and that judge should be banned.

Allen (Boston)

Dan: How did you score the Williams/Martinez fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

If you read my story on the fight you would have seen that I had it 114-113 for Martinez.

Jake (NYC)

Is Daniel Jacobs your Prospect of the Year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I would suggest you wait a couple of weeks and read the prospect of the year story when it comes out.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

Why wouldn't Schaefer at least go and listen to the Dallas proposal? If nothing else, he has a bargaining chip to go back to the MGM with to negotiate a higher site fee.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I asked Richard that when we spoke the other day. He declined to answer the question.

Josh (Richmond, VA)

What's the word on Antonio DeMarco? Judging by his record, it looks like he has some pop. Could Valero have some trouble in that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Somebody didn't read the notebook today.

JR (San Jose)

Excluding a rematch what would be the next big fight for either Pacqiuao or Mayweather. It would have to Sugar Shane right??

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Obviously, as long as Shane defeats Andre Berto on Jan. 30. I would also say that if Pacquiao-Mayweather lives up to the hype, the biggest fight for either would be a rematch.

Mike (New Orleans, LA)

Any chance Pac - Mayweather is in New Orleans? We know how to host and put on great events.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

New Orleans is out of the running.

Randy (NYC)

Is the "ESPN scorecard" your scorecard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Yes.

Tom (Kingston Ontario)

Do you think that Williams last fight (a close fight I had Sergio by a round no complaints) will actually help him get fights because I honestly didn't see why he would be avoided by some of the big names. He definetly looked beatable

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Maybe it will help him get fights. But even after that close fight (and a great fight) I still don't see the top welters being willing to fight him. Williams and his team still insist he can make 147 and would for a big name.

Adam R (Albany)

Dan, I just wanted to thank you for being involved in quite possibly the longest chat ever last week. It's nice to see some people are willing to speak with the nation for an extended amount of time, while other guys are "so busy" that they stay for half an hour. It was an amazing 5 hours, I believe

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Five-plus hours!!!! Hey, I enjoy the chats and there a lot of good comments and questions coming in. Besides, I had the time since I was only going over to the Williams-Martinez weigh in later in the day.

Sean (NJ)

Great tid-bit on the Olympic-style drug testing for Manny-Floyd. Assuming Manny passes all tests, which I think he will, does that finally shut up Floyd Sr. and others (including Paulie Mag., as I read in his chat)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Nothing will ever shut Floyd Sr. up.

Josh (Richmond, VA)

Ahhh, my bad DTM. I did read the notebook, my apologies though...roughing it after starting work at 3:30am this morning...please don't ban me...

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Don't let it happen again.

EVERYONE (ENTIRE WORLD)

Thank you for expressing our collective sentiments about the Joe Buck Show.

Justin (Youngstown, OH)

Sad just sad about Dallas. I thought Dallas would have made this fight even bigger. It could have been a superbowl. A huge spectacle.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Coulda been. Won't be.

Mayo (New Jersey)

could the winner or Malignaggi-Diaz face the winner of Bradley-Peterson?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

It would be a logical fight wouldn't it?

rob (bellomre)

predictions on diaz-Malignaggi and bradley-Peterson?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I lean to Bradley on a close decision. I lean to Diaz also on a close decision.

Nick (Sacramento, CA)

I had it 115-113 Martinez, but the decision could have gone either way. The best thing to come out of this though is that Martinez will undoubtedly get the fanbase he's deserved after that performance. He's been a phenomenal fighter for a while, and he's getting the recognition for it now.

z (Nj)

Adamek Hopkins in 2010 any chance still?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Possible. But I am not going to hold my breath.

Bing (Philly)

Who gets a piece of the site fee for a fight? The fighters? Wouldn't it have been smart business for Floyd to keep Dallas in the mix to drive up other potential bids?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

The money from a site fee goes into the pot. Yes, they would have been wise to at least listen to Jerry Jones.

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

It looked like Sergio Martinez handled 160 lbs. pretty good, how do you think he would do against Pavlik? I think he has too much speed and movement for Kelly.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I think he would do extremely well against Pavlik.

Mario (Houston TX)

Dan, are you in Chicago? Are they expecting a good turnout for the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

No, I didn't travel this weekend after traveling the last four of five. I am home and can't wait to watch the fights on the big screen in HD.

Nick (New York)

Which of the retreads do you think has the best chance at making one last statement in the heavyweight division?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Of the three I wrote about in yesterday's blog -- Peter, Maskaev and Briggs -- I would have to give Peter the best chance because he is way younger than the other guys.

Jon (NYC)

I can't get sucked into another 5 hour chat. I have four exams next week!

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

You're playing with fire.

Mayo (New Jersey)

RAD tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Likely.

Nick (New York)

Any rumblings of who could be on the Pac-PBF undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Not yet. That is one of the things the sides are bickering over, the budget for the undercard.

mike (baltimore)

which network are you going to watch tomorrow? HBO or Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I am going to start with Showtime, since it comes on at 9. Depending how the fights are going I will either stay with Showtime or flip to the start of HBO.

$G$ (Oakland)

Gusano Rojas to pull off the upset tomorrow night against Vic!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

To me, he is a live, live, live dog. If Vic is overlooking him, he's in trouble. Vic is a little odler now and coming off a bad beating in his last fight.

Chi (Detroit)

Danaimal, just wanna know what prospect your gonna JINX this year with your prospect of the year award.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

You're an idiot. Look at the picks I have made for the past nine years. Way more good ones than bad ones. Let's see -- I've had Cotto, Peter, Jermain Taylor, Andre Berto, even Amir Khan. They all did very well for themselves. Bojado was a huge bust but EVERYONE was on him. The Love Child didn't pan out. And Ortiz, who is only 22, we still don't know for certain how far he will go.

Louie P (Carlsbad)

What is the difference between the Olypmic style drug testing and the one Nevada state athletic commission uses?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

They draw blood (not just urine) and the samples are tested at the UCLA facility that handles US national team samples.

Mario (Houston TX)

Dan, Why is Maidana slated to fight Alexander instead of Khan? Isn't he Khan's mandatory?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Yes, he is Khan's mandatory but who cares? If he can get a shot at Alexander's belt, what's the different? Besides, the fight is not made. It is just what HBO prefers at this point.

Dennis (NJ)

Shaw said in an interview that he is now open to a Donaire-Darchinyan 2. What are your thoughts on this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

He told me the same thing recently. It's a rematch that Vic wants and Gary said if that's what his fighter wants and they can make a deal, he won't stand in the way even though he has issues with the way Donaire dumped him. Ultiamtely, it comes down to money and it's a better money fight for Darchinyan than anything else realistically out there for him.

Mo (Jersey)

Thoughts on Granderson trade?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I like it a lot, but I also hope the Yanks bring back Damon.

John (PA)

Why won't Hopkins fight Chad Dawson? Should HBO and the public demand this fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

A lot of danger for a financial reward not nearly as good as some other fights he can make. Bernard is 44 and had a great career. If he doesn't want to fight a prime slick guy 15 years younger than him, so be it. I am not going to give him a ahrd time. Frankly, if they did meet I think the fight would suck.

Chris (Rotterdam jct, ny)

Brian Minto will be entertaining at Cruiserweight!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

If he could make the weight. I was with Minto, Lou DiBella and a few others after the fight last week at the Bally's bar. Minto said there was no money at cruiserweight, which is one of the reasons he's been at heavyweight. He also said he would have a hard time making the weight but might consider it for the right fight. In any event, Brian doesn't have a promoter and even though he lost, DiBella told him he was interested in signing him and that his manager should get in touch with him. Brian made a lot of fans with the way he fought and the heart he showed. He has nothing to be ashamed of and I'd like to see him again.

Alan (South Africa)

Hey Dan, what happened to the piece you were going to do on Haye? He's certainly a good interview, but hasn't backed up his words with actions up to now. The british press give him a free ride in my opinion.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Frankly, I have been so busy with more pressing stories and traveling and the holiday, I haven't gotten to it.

nick (nyc)

dan - theres no question that Pac is fighter of the year - but do you think if Vitali wins convincingly that he merits consideration for at least runner up for fighter of the year?

antony (UK)

What did you make of Kevin Mitchells performace against Prescott last week? and will Mitchell-Katsidis fight for JMMs title if he vacates? Would be a great fight!

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I saw the fight and I thought Mitchell, who have seen many times, looked really good. He boxed very, very well against a really good puncher who never really laid a glove on him. I do think Mitchell will get a shot at the vacant title if/when JMM vacates. Him and Katsidis would be a fun fight.

Andrew (Nashville TN)

Wait, is this a new chat or is the one from last Friday still going?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Hilarious.

Bernardo (West Palm Beach)

Holeyfield-Botha? Are they kidding?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

No, unfortunately.

Alex (Montreal)

Hey Dan, next time you see the higher-ups at HBO, Showtime, or any boxing promoter, can you ask them why they don't put out DVD's or BluRay's of their PPV's or fight cards ? The UFC does it, the WWE and TNA does it ... don't these people like money ? I know I'd buy the ones that interest me in a heartbeat.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

We've been over this many times. HBO and Showtime do not own the rights to do that. They belong to the promoter of the show. HBO and Showtime's rights only last so long for the purposes of replays on television and the use of highlights.

guano man (puerto rico)

dan i thougth it was a travesty that hbo didnot put williams vs martinez on their best of 2009 show do you agree

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

The schedule of that was made before the fight took place. HBO would like to add that fight to the year-end best of shows if it can clear space on the schedule.

Sabu (parts unknown)

Do you think I can get the winner of Manny-Floyd in a barb-wired match?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

You never know.

Cooper (Vegas)

What are your thoughts on capping the heavyweight division at around 220-225 and creating a super-heavyweight division for fighters above that limit?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Bad idea. We don't need more divisions. We need less. If you HAVE to change things, then up the cruiser limit again to maybe 210. But adding another division is a bad idea.

Joe (Indiana)

We will all grow beards like yours and...you know....drink your blood from a chalice.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Uhhh, yeah. Whatever.

Mike (NJ)

Has a judge ever been kicked out of boxing for an obviously wrong card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I am not sure. But I don't think so. I mean they let Eugenia Williams continue to judge after her inept card from Lewis-Holyfield 1. If they let her stay, I think they'll let anyone stay.

Jack (NYC)

is Larry Merchant back in 2010 with HBO

Dave (RI)

Serious Question. Has a fighter who was having trouble making weight ever donated blood right before the weigh-in? A pint of blood has to weigh at least a pound. Extreme, but probably effective.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

The Jose Luis Castillo people considered doing that before one of the Corrales fights. It is a disgusting notion that anyone would do that.

frank (bakersfield)

What happened to Golden Boy's world cup of boxing? It was a good show.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Good question. I'd like to see them do that again. I will have to ask.

Toby (Chicago)

Excellent answer on NOT adding another weight division. Love your stuff Dan. Hey I am attending the fights tomorrow night and was wondering if there will be a good undercard worth watching other than the 2 fights that will be aired. Do you know? I always love watching a new up and coming prospect.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

The Chicago undercard has like 10 fights on it with some good names and some solid matches. Randall Bailey is on there, so is Erislandy Lara in his toughest fight to date. Plus several prospects. Enjoy the show.

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

DTM, of all the fights this weekend, which do you think has the potential to be a great fight and why?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

I think the best fight on paper is probably Darchinyan-Rojas. Could be a sleeper slugfest. But I actually like all five HBO and Showtime fights. I also love Pascal-Diaconu 2. Their first fight was tremendous. This is a great weekend for boxing.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Williams/Martinez...Fight of the Year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

You'll see in a couple of weeks.

Steve (Hartford)

If the Johnson/Mack fight gets made will it be on the telivised card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

No, it would not be on HBO but would be part of the international broadcast of Mosley-Berto.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, which arena is your preferred venue for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Don't really care. But if it is at the MGM Grand, great. That's a place like a second home to me. I always enjoy being there.

Michael (Toronto)

Dan, I liked your HOF blog. Quick question about Chang and Yuh -- where have all the Korean boxers gone, even in the fly/straw divisions? Boxing is still very popular in Japan but I haven't heard of a big fight in Korea in like a decade.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Good question. There really hasn't been a significant Korean fighter since Injin Chi retired. And I don't know why.

travis (boise)

Minto vs the Swamp Donkey on May/ Pacman undercard

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Won't be on that card but that was a fight DiBella and I were talking about. We would both love to see it.

Turk (DC)

Do you think putting the biggest fights in Las Vegas has marginalized the sport for casual fans and mainstream media?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Not at all. There are still excellent shows in other places, like this weekend's show in Chicago. Mosley-Margarito in January was in LA in front of more than 20,000. Houston hosted a huge show in February with Marquez and Diaz. New York has big fights regularly. So does Boston. They had a nice crowd in Philly for the Hopkins show last week.

IBF, WBO (Seventh Circle of Hell)

I disagree. More divisions!!!!!!!! More sanctioning fees!!!!!

Joe (RI)

Hey, can we talk about how much Hartford sucks some more?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

What else is there to say?

Aaron (MI)

When will Edwin Valero get a big fight on HBO or Showtime? This guy is a pound for pound great fighter and we are missing his prime because of a lack of coverage. 25-0 with 25 KO's. Is he still with Golden Boy?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Edwin Valero is NOT a great fighter. Edwin Valero has never fought a top fighter. He can punch but is untested. He is not with Golden Boy, he is with Top Rank now, but Valero messed things up by drinking and driving and now can't get into the US. He may fight in Mexico on Showtime against DeMarco on Feb. 6.

Artie Lange (NJ)

Even I couldn't make Joe Buck entertaining.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Dan the Chatman, I read in your previous blog that the Miami Dolphins were interested in hosting the Mayweather/Pacman fight. Any new updates to that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

They polled their season ticket holders with an email blast. But they are not seriously in it because they are an outdoor stadium with weather that could be a real problem.

Bill (NYC)

What did you think of the HBO Max Kellerman Year In Review?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

I really liked it and I called Max to tell him after I saw it. I was loving the fact that he got HBO to put the Dunne-Cordoba fight in there.

Christmas Gift List (Texas State Pen.)

Mr. Kirkland,Your Soap-on-a-rope request has been recieved!

Mayor (Hartford, CT)

Joe (RI) is obviously still made about his girlfrield... hey its her own fault for moving here...

David (Houston)

Pascal is too quick for Diaconu and the outcome is similar to the first fight, agreed?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Agreed. I think Pascal wins again.

Chris (Columbus, OH)

Do you think Antonio Diaz has a chance agaisnt Victor Ortiz?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I know Antonio has heart and we all question that about Victor. So if it becomes a really tough, physical fight, Antonio has a chance. That said, Antonio is slow and not a huge puncher. They picked him as Victor's comeback opponent for a reason.

Rachael Cordingley (Carl Froch's bedroom)

I'm still really hot. Just thought you'd want to know.

JB (Toronto)

Do you anticipate Marquez/Vazquez 4 being disappointing compared to the previous fights? They have both taken such a beating that I'm not sure there is much left in the tank.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

There is no way that fourth fight can live up to the first three. I would be pretty shocked if they did. But it can still (and probably will) be a very entertaining fight.

Jose (OKC)

Any thoughts on Mexico's Saul Alvarez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Excellent prospect I have been following for some time. He's close to a deal with Golden Boy that will have him fighting regularly in the US but still fighting sometimes in Mexico.

Turk (DC)

Thanks for the boatloads of stories lately. What's your early take on the Jan. 23rd Gamboa-Mtagwa & Juanma-Luevano? I'm hoping for some good fights, really curious to see Gamboa vs Mtagwa

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I love that doubleheader. I think both fights are very interesting and I plan to go to the show. Gamboa could be tested by Mtagwa. He's so much faster than Mtagwa and also a good puncher. But if Mtagwa can stand up he could give Gamboa problems. Luevano and Lopez is a toss up to me. Lopez a better puncher, Luevano a better boxer and a little bigger. It's a great way for HBO to kick off the year.

JB (Toronto)

So HBO isn't televising the Lara fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

No, Lara's fight tomorrow won't be televised. It will be part of the international broadcast.

Jason (Riverside, CA)

Dan what's your take on how the Jack Johnson pardon issue is playing out?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

I think he should be pardoned. It is very clear that his conviction was strictly based on his race.

JB (Toronto)

Hooray for living in Canada and getting the international feed.

Romeo (DC)

Dan, are you going to be in studio again for 2010 season of Friday Night Fights rotating with Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

I am not sure of the full lineup of the guest hosts, but I have been invited back and appreciate the opportunity. It was a lot of fun last season. My schedule is not firm yet but I am supposed to have my first appearance of the season on either the season premiere on Jan. 8 or the Jan. 15 show. I'm looking forward to it.

Jason (DC)

Hey Dan,Start the buzz to have some fights in DC at the Verizon Center.Less travel for you and good for the fans here.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Couldn't agree more. In fact, how about some fights at the Patriot Center on the George Mason campus? Even closer to my house!

R! (Yay Area)

Please pass this on to GBP, Bika vs Andrade on the under card of Pac vs Floyd!

Derek (Brooklyn)

Who else will be on the January 23rd card at the Wamu? I saw you mentioned Clottey earlier for january 16th, did you mean 23rd?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

No, I meant Jan. 16 for Clottey. On the 23rd, the undercard is not set but I think we'll young guys like Jorge Diaz and maybe Duddy, among others. Maybe Korobov.

Ryan (Staten Island,NY)

Any word on Julio Ceaser Chavez's other son Omar do you think he is Better than Julio ceaser chavez jr?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Omar makes Julio Jr. look like Ray Robinson.

James (Athens)

Would the rematch of Williams Martinez take place at 160 again or 154 with belts on the line? I thought Williams looked a bit slower in his last fight and would probably welcome the 154 weight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

That's up for discussion. If there is a rematch, I'd certainly like to see it at 154 for the title and, more importantly, to clearly establish the No. 1 fighter in the world at 154.

nick (nyc)

whats the latest on Ronald Hearns? I was kinda sold on him becoming a contender until his loss - in your opinion, does he have the tools to take it to the next level?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

He fights on the Chicago undercard this weekend as he tries to make his way back from a bad knockout loss.

micheal (Oakland)

Chris Avalos. real deal or pretender?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Prospect moving nicely. Too soon to say anything more than that. Jury is out. But so far, so good.

Programme (Dallas)

I nominate Shannon Briggs Christmas wish for quote of the year

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

That was pretty funny (read yesterday's blog if you don't know what he is talking about).

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

DTM, Heading to Chicago Sat for my 1st big fight, any idea of how the UIC Pavillion's sight lines are? This is one of the deeper cards I've seen recently even with Mack dropping off of it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Never been to that facility but have fun.

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

Do you know if Darnell Wilson has anything in the near future? He usually makes for some entertaining fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Just got added to a Jan. 29 card in Glen Burnie, Maryland. Opponent TBA.

JD (NY)

Dan, How much Yankee stuff have you bought since they won the title?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I bought a championship hat and the Sports Illustrated commemorative magazine. My mother in law sent my wife and I holiday thing of popcorn in a big Yankee 27th championship tin, which is really cool, so when the popcorn is gone I will display it in my office.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Somebody pointed out that there was a question earlier that I posted about Larry Merchant's 2010 HBO status and that the answer was not posted. The answer is that, yes, Larry's contract includes 2010.

Aaron (MA)

who is the broadcast team for tomorrow night's HBO show?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Usual BAD team as far as I know -- Papa, Max and Lennox.

Romeo (DC)

Am I a freak? I got a mathematics final in thirty minutes, but instead of studying your chat is my top priority.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

A Freak, yes. But a stupid Freak.

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

DTM, What's the soundtrack today?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Madonna's greatest hits.

JB (Toronto)

Is Rafael Tirado the confirmed opponent for Rigondeaux on the 16th? It's not listed on Tirado's upcoming schedule but I take your word over the rest.

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

It's on the official bout sheet.

Chris D. (Chicago)

Scott - UIC Pavilion is amazing for boxing. There are almost no bad seats, as it's other uses are primarily college sports and roller derby.

James (Athens)

Thoughts on Elin Woods vs. Jaimee Grubbs on the Pac. May. undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I like it.

Ryan (Staten Island,NY)

Do you think it's possibile that Andrade took a dive in his rematch with Bute?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Do you think it's possible that your parents regret your birth?

Ryan (Cleveland)

Greatest Hits or the Immaculate Collection?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Actually, Celebration, which is the new collection.

Gerardo (AZ)

Can we just agree that guys with french names should not be allowed to judge boxing matches? (Pierre Benoist, Benoit Roussel)

Jerome (LA)

Freak status? I took up a second job at ticketmaster to get first dibs at fight tickets.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Definitely. Sweet move.

brian (paradise)

Is Vitali and Johnson live or taped

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Tape delay.

Ryan (Cleveland)

Your thoughts on a 30 Tiger mistress Royal Rumble for Pac-May undercard? We are a little short right now, but should be on pace for 30 by March.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Genius.

Dennis (Canada)

Have you ever been to Montreal to cover a fight? If not, will you be planning to?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I have been to Montreal several times but never for a fight. It is one of the places I really want to go to for a fight and I am sure it will happen eventually.

pat (NYC)

Is there a rematch clause for Pacquiao-Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

As far as I know, no there isn't.

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

DTM, Can you give the Staples Center bid of 20 mil some scale? It sounds huge, but I'm not sure what to compare it too.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

It's the biggest guarantee in history but it won't be enough for this fight.

Pete (Salt Lake)

I hear that Williams team is still chasing a fight with Hopkins, do you think that has any chance of happening. Is B-hop still planning on fighting around the date he was supposed to face RJJ or are we in store for another long layoff?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

They would like Hopkins but I dont see it happening. Bernard wants historically significant fights plus fights that bring big money. Williams is not a historically significant fight and doesn't bring the most money. It's cool Williams is calling for him but it ain't gonna happen.

Mitch (high school, CA)

I teach 7 classes a day. I must be an addict to spend my only planning period reading this. Had to have a Friday fix.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Good man.

Adam (Milwaukee)

how do u feel about bhop saying he will go to "EUROPE" to fight danny green

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

It gave me the idea that when BHop turns 45 in January I may have to send him an atlas for his birthday present.

Rob (Texas)

what fights are HBO showing for Best of 2009 ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I believe they will air over the course of a week Berto-Collazo, Pacquiao-Cotto, Marquez-Diaz, Mayweather-Marquez and Mosley-Margarito. And I know they are trying to get time on the schedule to add Williams-Martinez.

Newt (Jacksonville)

They should really make Floyd-Pacquiao 24/7 hour-long episodes. Imagine how much good stuff gets cut to trim down to 27 minutes? They want 2.5 million buys? Go all in.

BennyT (DC)

Dan. thanks for all the work that you put into the boxing page it's my #1 resource. That aside, do you know of any plans to sell or air some of the great fights from the 80's and early 90's? ESPN Classic shows some good fights but the sugar rays and haglers of the world are sorely missed. Thanks again.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

ESPN does not have the rights to the classic Leonard, Hagler, Duran and Hearns fights. Most of them belong to Top Rank.

Patrick (Mexico)

I'm in the same boat as Mitch...Friday's not a big learning day for my kids...Unless they have questions about the fights.

JD (STL)

Anything new with Corey Spinks? He's the real champ at 154.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

A) No. B) How is the "real" champ?

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,I know the subject was broached earlier about a RAD tomorrow night but there wasn't a definate answer. Will the freaks have a place to talk about the fights tomorrow night/early Sunday morning?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Yes, there will be a RAD. Just got a note back from the office clearing it.

David (Alberta, Canada)

Prospect of the year Guillermo Rigondeaux???

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

No. Not enough pro fights.

David (Pittsburgh, PA)

Is Oscar De La Hoya one of the most overrated fighters of the last 20 years considering he never beat anyone worth a crap?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

David my good man a couple of things. One you are a moron who clearly either knows nothing about boxing or just is a hater. And also, let me add, you are banned.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Will Bob Arum ever write an autobiography? It would be an awesome read to those who like to know what happens "behind the scenes".

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I've asked him about that in the past and he has been non-committal. But I think it would be a great idea.

Jerome (LA)

DTM,Can we get an early sneak peek at your year end awards for the great year that was boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

No.

Ryan (Albany NY)

Dan, did HBO send a crew to Switzerland to cover the fight, or is the regular crew just going to call the fight while watching the feed?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

No, they will call if off the feed as it happens.

Banishment ("Down Below")

Welcome David...pull up a seat next to anyone who asks about Kirkland (yes he's still there)

Scott (Bloomington,MN)

DTM, Great year for HBO, at least 3 great candidates for fight of the year with a few honorable mentions as well. Ortiz vs Maidana is my sleeper pick. I just hope they can follow it up in 2010.

Daniel (Wilmington, Ca)

Hey Dan, Long time freak here. I met you and Max Kellerman the day of the Mayweather/Marquez fight. Anyway, I was just wondering if you ever heard the argument between RA the Rugged Man and Floyd Mayweater and what was your opinion on that. It was really hillarious. The guy seems to be a big boxing fan and seems to know his stuff.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

I did hear that interview and it was legendary.

Briks (Philly)

I kinda miss the old Countdown shows HBO used to do. In the countdown shows, you would get opinions and analysis from reporters and others in the sport. The cameratime wasn't just limited to the people who are in the camps. I wish they would include some of that outisde analysis into the 24-7's going forward. I think they have gotten a little stale.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

There was supposed to be a countdown show for Pavlik-Williams but the fight was called off.

Aaron (MI)

What will be the glove size for Mayweather vs Pacman?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

8 ounces.

$G$ (Oakland)

What happened with Kendall Holt? Havent heard much about him since his loss to Bradley.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

He may face Nate Campbell in a title eliminator.

Josh (Richmond, VA)

Week after week, it's the same deal with the "Oscar" questions. Look, I'm not an Oscar fan (always been a Mosley guy), but I can still appreciate that Oscar was a great fighter. I don't like Tiger Woods either (and not because he's taking up all the single tail across the country), but I understand that he's one of the greatest ever. Sometimes, sports fans amaze me with their ignorance...

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Well said.

Charles (Philly)

Dan, at Thanksgiving I reminded myself to be thankful for your blogs. But everyone knows that the holidays are also the hardest time of the year in terms of depression. And after reading your comebacking-heavyweight-retreads blog entry I had trouble mustering the will to get out of bed in the morning.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Sorry, bro.

Joe (Indiana)

I think its a travesty that you aren't a religious icon. I wish to start the Church of Dan!

Koichi (NYC)

Kameda vs Wonjongkam in March, you think Koki can pull off the win?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Yes.

Steiny (NYC)

Hello Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Are you really back? Too bad.

Ryan (Cleveland)

To follow up Josh's comment, it isn't as though Oscar ducked anybody either...he fell short, very slightly in some cases, against world class talent. He beat at least a dozen really good contenders. He also beat a couple of fading legends. It isn't like he fought nobodies. For a decade he fought the best of the best in a thirty pound range.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, what's your favorite Madonna song? I'd have to roll with 'La Isla Bonita.'

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Damn, that is probably my favorite one also! It's great live.

Aaron (Hartford)

you know Dan..since everyone has such a distain for the Insurance Capital of the world... instead of banning people... just send them to Hartford...

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I will take that under consideration.

Neal (Joliet, IL)

Do you think the NCAA tournament will negatively affect the fight a little bit? Obviously Derby weekend was a better fit, but I wonder if the first weekend of March Madness could hinder its attention thus PPV buys a bit

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

We all know March 13 is a bad date. Nobody associated with the fight wants if March 13 except Manny because of his misguided politcal race. He can run later if he wants but him insisting on running now has really caused problems with the fight. To Mayweather's credit, he was cool with March or May. So having it March means you are dealing with the Super Bowl during the promotion, the Olympics and March Madness. It doesn't help the fight at all.

Paul B (NY, NY)

DTM w/ the plan: I have your pedictions for some fight sthis weekend; how abuout ortiz- diaz?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Ortiz by a knockout.

Steven (Savannah, GA)

What do you think of a Welterweight tournament? Or are their too many egos in the welterweight division?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

No point because each of the big fights will happen on their own for massive money on PPV. The fights are too big to make them part of a tournament.

Dario (CA)

When doing your "round of the year", "KO of the year" etc, do you go just off memory or do you keep notes throughout the year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

I keep notes and I go back and watch the fights and rounds and knockouts.

Pete (NYC)

Besides Dunne/Cordoba, is there any fight of the year contenders that have really flown under the radar, youtube specials a la Somsak/Monshipour in '06?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Maybe the Rhodes-Moore fight from England from a few weeks ago.

John (Grand Rapids, Mi)

Dan just gave Mayweather credit, who knows next he'll start listening to decent music.

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

LOL!

Madonna (Satin Sheets)

Truth or dare, Dan...

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Dare.

george (vegas)

does bruce trampler deserve hof?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Absolutely. He should have been in a years ago.

Reid (Ann Arbor)

Hey Dan, im getting sick and tired of these horrible judges that are hurting the sport. Do you think adding 2 more judges to every fight would possibly offset some of these horrific scorecards? Or would that just make things even worse?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

No, would just make things more muddled and worse.

Damjan (Charlotte, NC)

when is Lamps getting into the hall?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Not soon enough.

Chris (Columbus, OH)

Just checked out the first few rounds of Judah-Mayweather on Youtube. I think Mayweather's going to have his hands full with Pacquiao's speed.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Those who pick Manny in the fight point to that fight as a key reason why.

Jack (NYC)

Is HBO gonna pick up Wladimir vs Eddie Chambers?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Nothing is set but I would think it will be strongly considered.

Nick (Queens)

Dan- Who does the 8 ounce gloves favor more in Mayweather-Pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Deintely Manny, who is the better puncher. Not to mention Floyd has more fragile hands.

Paul (Las Vegas)

Dan, just a heads up the fight is the week before March Madness starts.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

I didnt mean the actual tournament, I meant the massive attention all of the sport gets at that time of year.

dantheboxingfan (flanders NJ)

Dan, any chance we can hold these chats twice a week?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Well we have them twice a week when I do a RAD and even at once a week, since they go multiple hours, I think we can cover it all in one chat!

Jorge (East Los Angeles)

Dan, I really like Peterson this weekend. Bradley struggles with bigger guys, and I feel he will be a lot more active than Holt was. Curious on who you think has the best chance at an upset of all the fights this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I can certainly see Peterson winning and would not consider it a big upset if he does. They are very evenly matched.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Giants going to keep it going this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

I hope so.

Wilkie (Toronto)

Dantheboxingfan, if you were a true freak you'd realize that Rafa's hands need to rest after a tough physical chat like the one hes currently engaged in.

giuseppe (philly)

so the MGM doesn't guarantee 20 million? why have it there? where does the extra $ for the promoters and fighers come from then?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

There are a lot of reasons. The MGM, when it hosts a fight like this, also defrays a lot of significant expenses as well besides just putting up money.

Nick (New York)

Why not put a guy like Pavlik on the undercard? He is almost been forgotten because of how little he has done over the last year or 2. Any chance of a big name like this on the undercard instead of all prospects or unknowns?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

You clearly have no concept of the boxing business. Pavlik generates good money on his own cards. Pretty simple.

Bing (Philly)

Why do promotors hold press conferences for fights? Are they really needed? Who actually goes to them besides media? Is it just a scam to take more money from fighters? Like a fight between Manny & Floyd sells itself. Just put it on the web. People will see it and the news will pick it up. holding a press conference seems so unnecessary

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

That is perhaps the dumbest question ever. A press conference that only the media goes to? DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. That's what they are for -- to give media members access to the fighters and promtoers for the purposes of promoting their event through stories in the newspapers, Web sites and television. It doesn't cost the fighters money. They are hyping their event. You are so stupid it is shocking you make it through the day. I am in shock over the insanity of your "question."

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

I'm not sure I can go on after that last question.

Andrew (Nashville)

"Bing" and "banned" both start with the same letter. Coincidence?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

I don't think so. I mean for real -- how stupid can somebody be?

Jorge (East Los Angeles)

Dan, Did that really just happen? Dang, I would love to see all the nonsense that you receive on these chats

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

It did happen and I am about to pass out from that question. It was even worse than the moron who once asked why can't HBO or ESPN end their shows on time (when they are showing a live event).

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Wow, thanks Bing, for ruining the chat.

Barack Obama (Washington)

I will, from now on, post all of my happenings as it pertains to laws and deeds of the United States of America online. There is no need for press conferences any longer

chauncey (teaneck)

I think that calls for a trip to Hartford?

Tyson (Vancouver)

Um Bing....it is called PRESS conference for a reason. Because it is for the PRESS!

richard (oxford, united kingdom)

thats almost up there with the guy who asked whether acne makes fighters bleed more!!!

David (Winston-Salem)

I don't think we want to see the nonsense Dan does. We see enough with the little he can actually post.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

You would be scared, very scared. Did Bing just ask that question? I mean really? Did he?

Brandon (Arlington, VA)

DTM, why do reporters go into the locker room after games? Can't people just look at the box score and see who won the game?

Bing (Philly)

Why do they hold the fights at arenas and stadiums? Is it really necessary? Who goes to them anyway, besides millions of fans? It's just a scam to take money from the fighters. They should just hold it in a gym or someone's backyard and they can show the fight on the web.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Sentence Bing to a John Ruiz career retrospective viewing.

Hartford (Connecticut)

welcome back Bing, haven't seen you since you were born

Bing (Insane Asylum)

Dan, I don't see why fighters wear gloves. Is that just a scam to make money for sporting good companies?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

I'm sorry Freaks, I am still horrified by that insane question. I mean it really threw me off my game. I have seen some absurd questions but that one blew me away. I am surprised that idiot even knows how to log onto a computer.

Bing (Insane Asylum)

They should outlaw boxing gloves. No one uses them except boxers!

Bing (Philly)

I cant believe they actually bring a scale to weigh-ins. It really takes away from the point of weigh-ins.

Joe (RI)

Why is Boxing fought in a Ring? Why not on sandy beaches or basketball courts? (I'm kidding of course, I'm not Bing)

Paul B (NY, NY)

Let me try a few: Why do boxers use gloves? Why do boxers hire promoters? Why are there weight divisions? How did I do, Dan?

Bing (Star Ship Enterprise)

I don't understand why boxers fight at all. Shouldn't they just hug each other and promote world peace?

Dale (Carson City)

I never seen the Dawson/Adamek fight when they fought a few years back. I am sure you have was it an interesting fight and did Adamek pressure bother Dawson at all? Did Dawson dominate him?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

I am still shaken by Bing's question but I will try to move on. I was at Dawson-Adamek. Dawson easily outboxed him and was winning easily when Adamek dropped him late in the fight and hurt him very badly. Dawson survived and hung on for the clear decision but there was definitely some late drama.

Benoit Roussel (Ville de Quebec)

Bing's question seemed perfectly logical to me.

Jess (Miami)

I have never laughed so hard during a chat.

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

I have never cried so hard during one.

Jose Sulaiman (Panama)

Hey Bing please forward your resume to me, you obviously are a misunderstood genius and we can use more men with your intellectual pedigree.

Bing (Philly)

A follow up: Why do they have a weigh in? This is just some scam to drum up interest in people buying those fancy scales that you see at the doctors office. Like you can go to any Carnival that I work at and some guy will just tell you your weight.

Bing (Purgatory)

When is Tyson fighting next?

Kayne West (VMA's)

Bing, I'm real happy for ya, and Imma let you finish, but Zab Judha's shower door is the dumbest member of this chat of all time. OF ALL TIM....oh wait....did that fool just ask why they hold pressers? Nevermind

Andrew (Nashville)

To be fair, what do you expect from a guy who refers to himself as "Bing?"

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

The Freaks have absolutely overwhelmed the chat queue with hate for Bing. It's amazing.

WBF (South Africa)

We'd like to sanction a fight between Bing and Fan Man for title of quickest stoppage of a boxing related event

Bing (Somewhere)

What color was Washington's white horse?

richard (oxford, united kingdom)

Maybe 'Bing' is just an alias for Gilberto Mendoza, our friend at the WBA

Kevin (Boston)

I was kind of surprised to see Anthony Mundine was dropping to jr. middle, wasn't he just a super middle title holder? I know that nobody knows him but he could make an interesting fight with some of the big names in the division right?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

I was surprised he would drop down as well. I was surprised when he went from 168 to 160. Will be interesting to see how he does.

Bing (Philly)

I don't understand why they show the fights on TV, when I can just Google the result the next morning.

Bing (Hmmmmland)

Who is buried in Grant's tomb?

Joe Buck (New York)

Bing, could I book you for my show? Don't worry, we're not going to film it or anything... I mean, really, having cameras for a TV show is such a scam!

JB (Toronto)

Bing Crosby is rolling around in his grave right now. You have besmirched the good name!

Jules (Winston-Salem)

Dan, settle a bet for me. Who wins in their prime: Vitali Klitschko or Riddick Bowe? I say Vitali going away.

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

I would go with Vitali.

rob (bellmore)

alright bing gave a dumb question - lets move on - PLEASE!

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

I'm trying dude, but the Freaks can't help themselves.

Tiger Woods (Orlando, FL)

All of a sudden, I don't feel so bad...

Matt (portland, OR)

Dan I just wanted to remind everyone the RAD has a two drink minimum. Basnhiment gets hungry after hours.

David (Winston-Salem)

Epic chats the last two weeks. Last week, the longest ever. This week, the funniest ever!

Chris (Concord, CA)

Is there a pre-determined location for the finals of the Super Six, like the MGM Grand, for example?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

No, other than the semis and finals are supposed to be in the United States.

Banishment (Down Below)

You know it's bad when even I refuse Bing's admittance.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, A Mundine should remember when C Byrd dropped down to 175 and everybody thought he was going to be trouble for the other fighters in the div. not so!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Good point. I have seen Mundine fight many times and I have no idea how he will get that low in weight.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Dan-- it is unquestionable that you are the leader of the Freak Nation, but do you think that even you can control them when they smell blood?

Braindamaged2too (The Asylum)

ALERT! ALERT! This just in:Joe Buck will have an exclusive interview with Bing on his next HBO show!!!

Tommy (Allenhurst, NJ)

Jesse Brinkley vs. Curtis Stevens 1/29 on ESPN2. Will the winner get a shot at Bute?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

It is an eliminator for the IBF's No. 2 spot, so the winner is not automatically the mandatory.

Kyle (Arizona)

Did you see James Toney's 2nd cheap shot at you? The man has no class.

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

LOL. No.

Michael (Oakland)

Dan...whenever you are on ESPN TV you HAVE TO use Bing as an adjective...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Do it for the freaks!

Marty (Cincinnati)

God, I'd rather watch John Ruiz fight Yuri Foreman than to EVER have to hear of Bing again

Bada (Philly)

Has anyone seen my stupid twin?

Mike (NYC)

Judah vs Urango, any more talk of this happening??

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

It's a fight some have talked about but not in an actual serious manner of making it at this point.

Phillip (bakersfield)

If Lamont Peterson wins tomorow, Can you see a Peterson vs Kahn fight for junior welterweight supremecy??? IN the Future.

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Unlikely in the immediate future but it would be an interesting fight for sure.

John McCain (U.S. Capitol Building)

I am officially launching a Congressional investigation into stupid questions about boxing.

Michael (Oakland)

I'm dying over here...I am laughing so hard I am about to be exposed for the cubicle-monkey fraud I always am on Fridays.....epic chat agian .....we are not worthy King of Freak nation

Steve (Minneapolis, MN)

Any word on Sergio Mora's opponent for January 30th? Will he be televised?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

No opponent yet but it won't be on HBO.

j (J-town)

I agreed with everything you said about Prince Naseem, but there was a LOT of unrealized potential to his career. Had he not retired after a single loss to Barrera, he could have had marquee fights with Erik Morales, Pac-Man and JMM, all of whom were fighting at featherweight within 1 or 2 years of his retirement.

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Perhaps there was unrealized potential but he did accomplish a LOT. And it was enough to be in the HOF. Mike Tyson had a lot of unrealized potential also. So did James Toney, and they will both be in the HOF someday as well.

Nate (Indiana)

Dan, who is the worst smelling boxer you have come across?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

These are my readers.

Ted (Palm Springs)

Dan, Why the disrespect to my man Tomothy Bradley? I see a story on Malinaggi/Diaz but nothing on the "Desert Stom" the true 140lb champion. Maybe after he destroys Peterson this weekend you will show him some love, Come on Dan you are better than that!

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Perhaps you missed my 1200-word feature on the fight from Wednesday?

Bing (Philly)

What is a HOF? Is it some way to scam the fighters?

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, any update on R Bailey...didn't he say he wanted to fight at welter after the Urango fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

He fights tomorrow night on the Diaz-Malignaggi undercard.

Bing (Purgatory)

Dan, will I hit any traffic on 495 if I leave Tysons at 5:00?

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

Now THAT is funny.

Dr. Rafael (Beautiful Connecticut)

When do you think Amir Khan will finally fight in the States? Later this year? Do you think he can develop a fan base here?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

I think for sure Amir will come here to fight at some point in 2010 if he keeps winning.

Arum (NYC)

[Giving Bing the finger}

Roger (Brooklyn)

I hear you on that Dan, Pavlik does generate business on his own, but the $ vs Pac man fight is bigger then anthing boxing has ever seen in the modern era, and in order to be solvent as a sport, I believe big stars should be on the undercard. so u agree?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Maybe so, but Pavlik will have something to say about that. He's not fighting on the undercard. Eatablished main event fighters at the top of the sport are not going to be on the undercard.

Marty (Cincinnati)

My wife, who knows nothing about boxing, just agreed that Bing is an idiot.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, I was at the Kessler /Ward fight a few weeks ago and the program had your writing all over it. Good work

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Thanks.

Cheryl David (Los Angeles, CA)

When Bing kills himself after the way you posted everyone's attack's on him, I hope you feel like Larry David

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Larry Davis is one of my idols!

Tom (New York)

Is the MGM Grand a better venue than the Mandalay Bay. I haven't heard the Mandalay Bay brought up in possible venues for the PAC vs. Mayweather megafight

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Mandalay is a non-starter. It is owned by MGM and has way less seats. Makes no sense to be at Mandalay Bay.

David (Winston-Salem)

Other than Mack Arena, does the MGM have the largest seating capacity in Vegas to hold a boxing match?

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

As far as indoors, yes.

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

Be right back, Bat Phone.

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

I'm back.

Andy (Ventura, Ca)

Do you think any regular joe has a chance to get tickets to the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

It will depend on where it ultimately lands.

Matthew (TX)

Who is officiating the Klitschko fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Kenny Bayless from Las Vegas will be the third man in the ring.

Ted (New Hampshire)

Dan, where's the best place to get past fights on dvd?

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

Probably my office.

Mike (Philly)

Who was on the Bat phone?

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

None of your business.

Chris (Columbus, OH)

I noticed in your notebook that HBO was thinking about March 6th for their Devon Alexander/Amir Khan card... wouldn't that put them up against the Super Six?

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Yeah. So?

Marty (Cincinnati)

But you won't let us into your office, Dan

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

True.

Kent (Staten Island)

Will Diaconu-Pascal II be aired in the US at all?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

For those who missed it, yes, the fight will air on tape delay on Saturday night at 8 on ESPN Deportes.

John Mark (Palo Alto, CA)

Do you think May- Pac will be available in theaters? If they can put together a decent undercard it could be great.

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

I think that it is quite possible, especially given Golden Boy's involvement and that they did the deals with the theaters to show Mayweather-Marquez.

Bing (Philly)

Dan, why do we live if we're all going to die anyway? Why not just not be born?

Barry (Switzer(land))

I saw FMM - JMM in theaters. They wheeled in a full bar and a pizza stand. Highly enjoyable evening.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Hell of an HBO card last weekend! Minto was a relentless pitbull!

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

That fight was really good, Arreola-Minto. The crowd was into it. And then the main event blew it away. What a great show. Even the off TV fights were excellent. Have to give props to Goossen Tutor Promotions and DiBella. They put on an excellent card.

David (Winston-Salem)

Earlier you said you would start with the Showtime fights this weekend because of the earlier start time, but that you would switch to HBO depending on how the fights are going. Of course you are recording both, but do you switch during the middle of a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

Sure, I will go back and forth if necessary. But I will record both fully to make sure I don't miss anything.

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

FYI Freaks -- We have weights from Switzerland. Vitali was 246.9 pounds, Kevin Johnson was 242.5 pounds.

Tony (Tampa)

Dan,Did you catch Chris Mannix, SI writer, on Jim Rome telling everyone boxing is NOT dead. Finally a mainstream guy getting it. Hopefully Wilbon and Kornheiser on PTI will see the light.

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

Chris is a cool guy. Been with him at many fights. And good to see Rome being set straight.

Sam (VA)

Do you think Freedie Roach would make a big difference with David Haye?

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

Freddie will be a benefit to anyone he works with.

sergio (san diego)

Rome gives boxing love.

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

That's true. He does sometimes. I am just sick of the whole boxing is dead crap. It's not true and never has been and never will be.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (Tehran)

I was quite impressed by Bing's question.

Brandon (Arlington, VA)

I would love to see Peterson take this crown so that DC will get another title fight! No traveling Dan!

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

I think if Lamont wins there would be a very likely chance that Top Rank would come to DC to promote a title defense.

Jake (Dallas)

It seems for a while there, promoters hoped to pair MMA with boxing on the same card. Has this movement completely died out?

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

I hope so. I think promoters of both sports realize that fans aren't necessarily fans of both. For me, having MMA on a card with boxing would make NOT go to the card. And I'm sure it's that way with a lot of MMA fans as it relates to boxing.

Pete (Salt Lake)

Thanks for the great notebook. I had a bunch of questions for the chat, but every one of them were answered there.

Dan Rafael
  (3:18 PM)

Now there is a well-schooled Freak.

Marty (Cincinnati)

Speaking of hometown fights, will Manny ever take another fight in the Philliphines?

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

At this point in his career, it would be very difficult given the difference in money here as opposed to there.

nick (ny)

freak status?? i had my appendix removed last thursday, released from hospital late friday, and drove to atlantic city early saturday to see the williams martinez fight..... which was awesome as everyone knows

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Freak for sure! I love it.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Props for a great week of reports, blogs, and today's Notebook! You are da Man! I read Paulie's chat wrap and was impressed with his gratitude towards the fans. Very few of the fighters who participate in the chats take the time to acknoeledge the fans. I thought Paulie deserved notice for that!!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Paulie enjoys his fans and is great with them. I have seen him pose for pictures and sign autographs and he always seems to enjoy it.

Lenny (albany)

Hey, when does Jorge Peaz get into the Hall of Fame....... Not joking at all. He fought better oppostion than Hameed.

Dan Rafael
  (3:24 PM)

Get your head examined. He won't be in the HOF and doesn't belong in it either.

Joe (PA)

Any chance Tua vs Arreola happens in 2010?

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

Anything is possible. I know HBO would love to do that fight. It would be a great fight for the fans. If Arreola won, it would easily be his best win. He still hasn't beaten anyone all that good. And if Tua won, he'd be back in the picture.

Jess (Miami)

Dan, any word on Antwone Smith?

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

Nothing specific other than he's supposed to be back on ShoBox in early 2010.

Edmund (Seattle)

What order will HBO show the fights this Saturday night? Will the heavyweight title fight be the last fight on the TV card?

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

HBO will open with the live Ortiz-Diaz followed by the live Diaz-Malignaggi 2 and then show Klitschko-Johnson on tape from earlier in the day from Switzerland.

Dan Rafael
  (3:33 PM)

OK, Freaks thanks for the wild chat. Hopefully, Bing will seek some mental help. Hope you had a chance to check out the notebook and other stories and blogs for the week. Enjoy the big Saturday of boxing and report back here tomorrow night for our late-night RAD after the fights end. Peace.
