Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hey everyone, let's going rolling.

Nick sandoval (Riverside CA)

Bill love the column, I've been reading for awhile now...so am I crazy to think that Bruce might actually be the "man"...would you just give him the keys?or possibly pick up a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round and let the two compete...I still think Bruce would win that though...what are your thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

Thanks, Nick, I think it would be unfair, at this point, to say Bruce can't handle the full-time gig. I think he deserves a chance. If he plays well in the final four games, he should get a crack at being the man in 2010.

Grahame (Vancouver)

Bill! Will Scifres hit the scoreboard on sunday?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

I could see it.

Dennis (Sacramento)

With the remaining schedules, will San Diego hold on to win the division?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

I think so, but the Chargers do have a tough three-game stretch starting Sunday in Dallas.

mike (dumont)

Do you feel that Kyle Ortons inability to get out of trouble when the pocket collapses will hurt the broncos down the strech and into the playoffs?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

Playing without Ryan Harris won't hope.

Chris (Amarillo, TX)

The way I see it, the Broncos need to beat the Colts if they are going to have any chance of winning the division. They need to put the pressure on San Diego to win in Dallas. How do you think that desperation translates on the field against an extremely talented Colts team?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

You're right, but Denver just needs to focus on getting in the playoffs.

Ben (Raleigh, NC)

Who do the Chiefs look to target in 1st round of the draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

I think the Chiefs have to start on the offensive line. They need three new starters there.

Jack (Boston)

Bill-Great work as always--is Orton going to be the Broncos QB for the next few years or are they going to look to draft someone in 2-3 rounds to develop?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

Thanks, Jack, I think the team needs to keep Orton for the next 2-3 years. He's a good fit.

Mike (Oakland)

I love your video mailbag. 2 suggestions, lose the curtains. And second, take live calls. That would be awesome! Your take??

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

Long story on the curtains. They're not mine. The video mailbag is filmed at an undisclosed location. As for live calls, not sure I'm that much of a techy.

Fred (Michigan)

Big broncos fan here in the detroit and traveling to indy this week to see my broncos...What do broncos have to do to pull off the upset?

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

I hve a post on that coming at 1:30 ET Saturday, Fred. Travel safe and enjoy the game. Indy's a great city ... Here's a hint: Stop No.18.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

For the love of my fantasy team, please tell me that Gates will have a big day against the Cowboys.

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

He has 15 catches for 285 yards and two TDs in the past two games. I like your chances.

Scott Roberts (Denver, CO)

Hey Bill, If the Chargers make it that far, what do you think their chances of getting past the Colts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

The Chargers will not be scared of the Colts in the postseason. They've knocked them off in the postseason before.

Eric (Chicago)

So Bill, I still have people telling me that I'm wrong on Cutler, that he is GREAT, that I'm out of my mind for wanting Orton back...I have a question for you then: Am I out of my mind for wanting a winning QB who has won at every level of play he's been in compared to another QB who hasn't had a winning season since high school? Short answer - No! Why don't people, especially in Chicago, get this fact that Orton is a better decision maker and although Cutler has the skills doesn't utilize them in the way he should, thus making Kyle Orton superior not just with skills or decision making, but WINS...the NFL is about the W's!!!

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

Look, Eric, this is an interesting one for me. Before the season, I thought Cutler was 10 times he player Orton was. But I think Orton is a better fit for Denver now. The key is coaching. Orton is getting coached well and he fits McDaniels' system. Cutler needs a better coach than he has. Cutler has more ability than Orton, but he is suffering a mental block now, it appears to be. That's why I wouldn't be surprised if the Bears bite the bullet and fire Smith and hire Shanahan. Cutler would be instantly fixed. The Bears have to save this trade, at any cost.

Brian ((San Diego))

What do you think are the keys to victory for the Chargers this week against the Cowboys?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

Brian, I have a post on the keys for San Diego at Dalals coming at noon Saturday. Here's a hint: Score early and get the Cowboys thinking about their December history.

Derek (Denver)

How big of a contract should we expect Orton to get if Denver keeps him?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

I think it would be competitive but I don't think it would break the bank.

Scott (Charlotte, NC)

Bill, love the blog. With Polumbus struggling in his first few games, is there any chance Denver seeks a veteran lineman for the stretch run? Or is it too late in the year? Thanks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

Thanks, Scott, I just don't see anyone out there that could help. Runyan would have worked, but he's in SD.

Tarek (nyc)

Hey Bill, is DHB the #2 reciever or is it Murphy? Chaz is the #1, but I think the team would be better served to start Murphy over DHB.P.S Murphy was a huge steal.

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

It's got to be Murphy. yes, Murphy is the goods. Nice pick ... DHB not so much.

Chris (Amarillo, TX)

Do the Broncos have the best secondary in the NFL? We all know about Bailey and Dawkins, but Goodman and Hill have emerged as extremely important pieces of the puzzle. That is what gives them a chance Sunday.

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

It's up there. Goodman and Hill have been terrific. Denver has the No. 2 pass defense in the league, so it does have a chance against the Colts.

Brady (Los Angeles, California)

Hey Bill. If Chicago continues to slip down their slope and their first round draft pick continues to rise higher, who or what position do you think the Broncos will be looking towards next spring in the NFL draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Bets O-lineman or D-lineman on the board.

Chris (Seattle)

As a Redskins fan should I be concerned about Shanahan possibly being the next coach.

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

You don't want Shanahan?

Dirk (Cheyenne, WY)

Your Heisman Vote (if you had one)?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

Toby G .... Totally biased. I grew up five minutes from The Farm.

Mike (Philly - ex San Diego)

Looking good this year, SD-NO for SB? But speaking of NO, how about Reggie Bush in SD in 2010, since he's worn out his welcome in NO...

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

I could see that Super Bowl. It would be nuts ... Yeah, maybe on Bush in San Diego. There will likely be a change at running back there.

Ross (Chicago)

Bill,I see a huge mismatch this weekend with Marshall vs. the Colts rook corners and plus Clady can handle Freeney. Thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

McDaniels excels at exploiting matchups, so I like the Marshall matchup, too. He's been playing well lately.

Aaron (San Diego)

I want to see the chargers destroy the cowboys, will i get my wish this weekend? or do you see a close game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

I think it will be fairly close.

Vijay (NYC)

Any chance the Broncos will trade up in the draft to get Suh? He seems like a great addition to any line, but especially the Broncos.

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

I will be hard to go up and get that guy. The tem with the No.1 pick will likely want him for themselves.

Mike (Ohio)

Hi Bill, Colts fan here. I admit I haven't paid much attention to the Broncos this year. What should I expect from them on defense Sunday?

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

Good coverage units, good pass rush, uneven against the run. Plenty timely when it comes to turnovers.

Ndamukong Suh (Nebraska)

What are the odds I end up in the AFC West? I really want to go to Denver!

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

KC may be your best shot.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

BW: Spot-on with your response on Cutler. I am by no stretch a Cutler fan, but I've seen the tools he possess (like effortlessly flicking a 40+ yrd pass without stepping into it) and with a better system/coach that plays to his talents, he is going to be much better.

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

Shane, this guy was good, real good, last season.

Mical (Austin )

What is the deal with Haley's lack of composure on the sidelines? I thought he was going to have a stroke givin Wade the business in the first quarter. There is "emotional" and there is "self-destructive." Where is Haley?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Let's stick with emotional for the time being.

Chris (Amarillo, TX)

Should Andre' Goodman be getting Pro Bowl consideration? I realize that his success has a lot to do with what Champ Bailey does on the other side of the field, but he is having a great season.

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

He should, but he won't. Not flashy enough. Not saying it's right, but it's the truth.

Powers B (Arlington, TX)

Chargers are gonna be right down the street from where I live, and I get to go to the game! Is the Chargers' D enough to keep the Cowboys from scoring more than Rivers & Co.? How do you think that the injuries to Castillo, Merriman and Weddle will affect that factor?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

I think Cstillo and Merriman will play. Weddle likley won't. Enjoy the game. I'll be there too.

Jeff (Indy)

Hey Bill, In your opinion do the Chargers need that #2 seed to get the bye week in order to make a playoff run to the super bowl more then say CIN or NE? Also how can anyone truly think DEN can beat INDY on Sunday look at the matchups. Freeney and Mathis will probably knock Orton out of the game and Moreno won't be so effective when they're down 24-7 in 2nd half?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

I think there is a huge difference between he No. 2 and No. 3 seeds. Getting the No. 2 seed is huge.

RJ (Boston)

I heard a rumor around here that Cerrato is "good friends" with Shanahan. Would that relationship be in jeopardy, or would it possibly help SNyder and Vinny to finally lay off the reigns... were it to (hopefully, hopefully, hopefully) happen?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

Shanahan and Vinny are good buddies. They go back to San Francisco.

Vijay (NYC)

Stop Peyton? Who stops Peyton? Aren't Buckhalter and Moreno the keys to beating the Colts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

The run game is a key because I will keep Peyton off the field.

Steve (Fallbrook, ca)

As a charger fan, I admit I laughed a little when I heard about the billboard in Oakland. I'm only human. Did you get any responses fro the Raider Nation that you can post?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

Yeah, they behaved themselves well. I appreciated it.

RJ (Boston)

Sounds like Shanahan is by far the most coveted of the big three (Holmgren, Cowher and Shanny) coaches available. Are Holmgren and Cowher just driving too hard a bargain?

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

I think Cowher and Holmgren will get their piece of the pie as well.

Mac (Colorado)

Moreno. Offensive Rookie of the Year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

He'll get votes, but I don't see him winning. Harvin should get it.

Graham (Madison,WI)

Any chance Denver is able to sign both Elvis Dumervil and Brandon Marshall this offseason?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

I think that's possible, sure. Not easy, but possible.

Chris (Seattle)

Let me rephrase that. Would Shanahan work with Snyder?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

They get along. But who knows what would happen if they worked together. Shanny is used to Bowlen, who never meddled.

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

They get along. But who knows what would happen if they worked together. Shanny is used to Bowlen, who never meddled.

Ryan (Boston, MA)

Hey Bill- Who do you see as the Broncos most likely first round opponent in the playoffs and can you see them winning on the road in the first round?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

I'm thinking it's going to be New England ... How juicy would that be?

Michael (madrid )

If the playoffs started today who in the AFC will be going to the Superbowl in your opinion and why.

RJ (Boston)

Ha Ha!that would be a neat thing to see... Sproles and Bush in the same backfield... what a gimmick.

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

It would be fun.

Colin (Washington)

Will Denver receive a Wild Card spot, and if so, who gets the other one?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

I say Baltimore.

jayeteee (Denver)

Hey, Bill, since Simms has looked so bad when getting into games, why doesn't McDaniels insert Brandstater in the #2 and make Simms the emergency QB? Brandstater couldn't do any worse than what we've seen from Simms.

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

That may happen next season.

Brandon (Denver)

What's the insiders info on Alphonso Smith ?? Are the Broncos happy with his progression... signing Ty law sez there are some questions... Thoughts ?

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

Smith is coming along slower than the team thought defensively, I think.

Warin (Englewood, NJ)

Hey Bill, If Gradkowski plays well these last few games and goes 2-2 or 3-1, do you think he gets the opportunity to start full time next year or does Al view him as a threat and let him go to further coddle Jamarcus?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

If Gradkowski goes 3-1. I think he has to get a shot next season.

Tarek (NYC)

Bill, do you think the Raiders will trade M. Bush in the off season? Seems like they prefer using Fargas and McFadden. Also isn't it time to give McFadden the rock 15-20 times a game?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

There's always rumors about a trade of Bush or Fargas, so maybe it will finally happen.

Richard (Raider Nation)

Bill Gallery to miss extended time doesn't that mean hes out for the season

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

With four games left, it just might mean that.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Great hour, everyone. Enjoy the great games this weekend in the division. Talk to you next week.
