Aloha everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today. Lots of juicy stuff going on in the league right now. We'll cover the Association for the first 40 minutes or so and then move into draft questions. Let's roll.
How do you foresee the Iverson situation playing out? What happens when Lou Williams comes back? Will Iverson really come off the bench?
I think AI was humbled by the whole thing with Memphis and the resulting backlash. He's still a very good basketball player and I think you'll see him play well. The question is ... will he help them win? I'm skeptical. I love Andre Iguodala and think Thaddeus Young has a lot of promise ... but Elton Brand's a bad fit there and they really miss Andre Miller. Maybe they can get him back from Portland. So in short, AI will be fine. Not so sure about the Sixers.
Chad I think the NBA needs to nip this Donaghy thing in the bud. He's really making a mockery out of the NBA and particular individuals within the league. What do you think?
Our own Henry Abbott did a fantastic job today attacking Donaghy's credibility. Once you're an established cheater, it's pretty tough to take anything he says seriously. However, I can tell you that many players, team execs, coaches, think that there is SOME truth to what Donaghy is saying. That refs SOMETIMES control games out of ego or grudges and that it kills the credibility of the game. Whether it's perception or reality doesn't really matter for the league. The perception alone can really kill the game. So yeah, the NBA needs to do more to create transparency in the officiating. I love the NBA as much as anyone and I believe that, from time to time, refs intentionally alter the dynamics of the game.
After losing out on J.Kidd, passing on Brandon Jennings, refusing to sign Jason "white chocolate" Williams, should Knicks' fans not trust Donnie Walsh anymore
I think the Brandon Jennings this is a bit overdone. Eight other GMs also passed him. We've covered this ad nauseum, but there are holes in NBA scouting. Typically they have a much looser handle on what's happening in Europe. More and more GMs are risk adverse. And Jennings, by all accounts, was terrible in workouts and interviews. Did they get it wrong? It sure looks that way. But that's the nature of scouting. We remember when GMs (and draft analysts) get it wrong. Not when they get it right. More often than not, Donnie Walsh is going to get it right.
What the hell does a guy gotta do to get fired?
Clippers are just 2 games under .500 and Blake Griffin should be back soon. Clips are just 2 games out of the playoffs. It's not as bad as it's been. Not sure if Dunleavy is the reason, but I think 9-11 is a good result for the Clippers given their current challenges.
What are the chances the Blazers trade Andre Miller? I really don't think he fits all that well......
I think you can expect Kevin Pritchard to be really active. Team isn't playing well. Oden's out for the rest of the season. It's time to shake things up and I think Miller is their best trade bait.
@chadfordinsider, Does the Portland front office now look completely overrated? The Oden injuries/miss on Durant, Bayless bust/trade demands, the Miller Signing/benching, The Aldridge extension for a 6'11" PF who grabs you 7 rbs/game, the Roy max extension for someone who may not be a max player. They've killed any future cap space, they can't count on future top five picks, and I don't think they are good enough going forward to be a contender. You and Hollinger want to change those future rankings yet?
I don't think they "missed" on Oden. If Oden sucked as a player, I think they missed. Not sure how you predict the two major injuries he had prior to the draft. When he was healthy and got some rhythm, Oden was beginning to turn into the player the Blazers thought he might be. Yes, Durant is better. But everyone knew that going into the draft and still, 30 out of 30 GMs, including Sam Presti, would've taken Oden over Durant. Bayless has been a bust and Andre Miller was an act of desperation. Aldridge was paid too much, I think Roy is a max player. All GMs have their mistakes, but I think, overall, Pritchard has been terrific. Do you remember how badly the Blazers sucked 3 years ago?
What do you see as the future of the Raptors? Blow it up?
I still believe Bosh is leaving. Miami or Chicago. What Colangelo needs to do is get something for him now ... if he doesn't, it will blow up on it's own.
Why has Bryan Colangelo not had success with the Raptors? He built Phoenix into a contender but cant seem to do that again with the Raptors. Overrated?
He doesn't have Steve Nash. If he did, they'd be terrific.
Is it possible the Lakers can be sending at least 4 players to the All-Star gamne?
Artest isn't going to the All-Star game. David Stern would file a court injunction first. Artest + wild All-Star parties = disaster for the NBA.
With Oden and Yao Ming injured (again), will teams start viewing big men as luxuries, rather than building blocks? Will the league start going smaller? It's not difficult to figure out why big men get hurt so much- an unnatural amount of weight on the knees and feet. If I'm investing that much money, I want to be sure the player will be on the court.
I think it's a fair point. More and more teams are looking for ultra athletic guys to play the middle ... no longer elephants like Shaq or Yao. Sure, they'll still pursue players like Dwight Howard, but the feedback that I'm getting from NBA GMs about this year's draft all has bigs like Cole Aldrich and Solomon Alabi falling. I think it has a lot to do with trends in the league. In other years, those guys go much higher.
Is Minnesota going to offer Rudy Gay way too much money this summer?
Of course they will. But with that said. I think he'd be a nice addition to Minnesota.
Why isn't Roy Hibbert getting more PT? When he was getting 30 minutes plus, he seemed to be playing pretty well. Is Jeff Foster more valuable to have on the court?
See the previous question about lumbering centers. Hibbert can't guard many of the guys coaches are using at the center position these days. He's just too slow laterally. Foster is a much better defender.
are the pacers now looking at a shot at John Wall now that Granger is out 4-6 weeks?
I'm not sure if Larry Bird has offended the basketball Gods or what ... but he sure seems to have offended someone. Pacers have had bad break after bad break. I actually think they should, at this point, dump as much talent as they can (Granger would be the only untouchable) and try to ensure that they get a high pick next year. They really need another STAR next to Granger -- especially at the point. TJ Ford is not cutting it.
Is Kevin Love the best player on the WOLVES?
Right now yes. Thanks for sending in a question Kevin.
The Sports Guy seems to believe the Gortat/Bass signings for Orlando haven't worked out so far this year and they should have kept Turkoglu with that money. What would be your take?
They overpaid for Gortat. But Mark Cuban would've too. Ditto for Darryl Morey. So Otis Smith is in pretty good company. I really liked the Bass signing and still do. Last year the Magic had no depth up front, now they do. Kind of hard to pick on a team that's going to win the East this year. As for Turkoglu ... he's really turned the Raptors around, hasn't he.
good time to trade monta? his value is very high.....
Sell. Sell. Sell.
Why were the Chicago Bulls were pretending that they didnt need Allen Iverson as in the situation they are in ?
The last thing they needed was AI. I think the Sixers were the only team in the league that could really justify it. What the Bulls need, and have needed for years, is someone who can draw a double team in the post.
In 10 years who ends up as the best player from this draft? Blake Griffin, Tyreke Evans, or Branon Jennings
Wow. My money's still on Griffin, but Jennings is a very close second. Evans third.
Considering the injuries and very tough schedule they've played, the Pistons have to feel pretty good about themselves once they get healthy right?
Uhhhh ... no. Injuries have been big. And they've had a tough schedule. But this team, even when healthy isn't going to win a championship. I know Joe D's content, for the time being, to just putting a playoff team out there. But he's going to get restless. He wants rings, not .500 teams.
Chad is the hawks going to be able to challenge the cavs and the magic all season?
They're good. Seem to be getting better every year, but I don't think they can beat the Magic, Cavs and Celtics in a 7 game playoff series. Seriously challenge them? Yes. Beat them? No. I might feel differently if they had a better point guard.
"As for Turkoglu ... he's really turned the Raptors around, hasn't he." Do I detect some sarcasm here from you, Mr. Ford?
You know that the apocalypse is upon us when Bill Simmons of all people is arguing for teams to overpay a 30 year old soft European ... and Chad Ford, of all people, doesn't agree.
Draft time! Do the Nets take John Wall even with Devin Harris as their PG? If not Wall then who?
I think John Wall is so good, virtually every team in the league would take him No. 1. He's the best point guard prospect since Chris Paul. However, a two teams that might pick in the lottery -- the Jazz (remember they own the Knicks pick) and the Bulls (Derrick Rose is too good) -- might go with Derrick Favors instead.
How far will Turner slip because of his injury? Or is it too early to speculate?
Depends on when he returns. Ohio State is saying two months. That brings him back in mid February. If he's totally healthy by then ... his stock could rebound. But more likely it's taken a hit. Backs are scary for NBA GMs. The game is hard on them. So many risk adverse GMs (see DeJuan Blair) are going to shy away. We dropped him from No. 3 to No. 10 on our Big Board. Could slip further. Too bad, he was the best player in college basketball before he broke his back.
From what I've seen Quincy Pondexter of Washington looks much improved this year. Reminds me of Brandon Roy. How high could he go if he keeps producing at this level?
High. He's a terrific athlete. We've had him in the late first round most of November, but he could be a late lottery pick. If he had a legit jumper he'd go even higher.
Where does Patrick Patterson go in this year's NBA Draft?
Right now I'd say Top 10. Great athlete. Putting up good numbers on a great team. Plays the right position. Wish he was 2 inches taller.
Where can we expect Wesley Johnson to land in the draft?
If he keeps playing like this ... Top 5. He's averaging more than 2 blocks per game AND 2 steals per game. The only person in the NBA to come close to that is the Hawks' Josh Smith and Johnson is a way better shooter.
Xavier Henry is looking awfully good. The game looks like it comes natural to him. Does he rise to a top 3 pick if he has a big showing in the tournament?
Probably a bit too high. We have him at No. 8 on our board. He's a terrific scorer and has a great NBA body. But he's a little one-dimensional. Would like to see better defense, rebounding or for him to pick up a few more assists per game.
How is Ed Davis' draft stock looking? I think he needs to be more agressive offensively.
He does. But he's pretty good. Great athlete. Excellent motor. A very good rebounder and solid shot blocker. Offensively he should be doing more, but I still think he's a Top 3 pick at this point.
If the NBA draft were to occur tonight, where would you have UConn's Stanley Robinson going? He's obviously long and athletic, and is beginning to play with consistency.
If he didn't have so many off the court questions -- lottery. But he's been pretty flaky for the first 3 years in UConn. He's the type of personality that scares NBA GMs. I don't think they're worried about him getting in trouble. More worried about him staying motivated and consistent. See Tyrus Thomas.
So, do you believe Wall will be as good as CP3?
Better athlete. Better size. Doesn't have CP3's feel for the game. So, no. I'd take CP3, even coming out of college. But Wall has the chance to be a superstar. He's the most athletic player I think I've ever seen. He's got ET athleticism.
in general, how good is this draft class?
Looks terrific. Upgrade over last year at the top with similar depth.
Is John Henson's draft stock slipping a little bit?
Short term yes. If he's not physically ready to play in college, he's not ready to play in the NBA. But long term? No way. Henson is freaky talented.
Is the talent in the 2010 draft a little overrated? Wall is the only star, everyone else projects to be good to pretty good players. Monroe, Warren, and a quite a few others have underwhelmed me.
Maybe a little. But Derrick Favors has star potential. If Evan Turner has no long term effects on his back, he does too -- reminds me a bit of Brandon Roy. And i think Ed Davis can develop into one. Ditto for Wesley Johnson. It's a good draft
How many bigs will be selected in this year's draft? Comparable to the amount of pgs taken this past year's draft?
I have 11 PFs in my Top 30. That's a lot.
Gotta run everyone. Talk to you next week.
