Chat with Matthew Berry

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:03 PM)

What's up gang? Let's get right to it... As always, all subjects answered. Let's have fun...

Ryan (SF)

What do you expect from Bowe on his return?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:04 PM)

Think he will be solid. If he is somehow still available, he's a string pick-up for this week vs CLE

Issac (Lodi (CA))

Matthew,I was fortunate to survive another poor outing by Reggie Waynethis week. He has another juicy on paper matchup this week atthe Jaguars. I know he?ll start, but how effective will he be?Am I crazy to consider benching him for T.O. vs the Pats? Thanks

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:07 PM)

No, you're not crazy. The problem is that TO didn't do much vs KC either... I want to see what the weather will be like in BUF first, but the way NE's pass D is playing... It makes sense. Wayne is just not right these days... They'll be very close in my rankings...

Bryan (Ohio)

Do you think I can keep riding the recent hotstreak of Jamaal Charles through the fantasy playoffs or is he going to fall back to earth soon?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:11 PM)

Well, you're definitely starting him against CLE this week. I'm not buying last week from th3e Browns... and vs CIN and DEN the following two weeks, it's not a great match-up but not a terrible one, either...

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:11 PM)

but hey - I've been talking about Charles forever.... even when he was backing up LJ - so I certainly like him now

Bircher (NW Iowa)

When I text a question to you guys during the sunday show, do you get it then or afterwards, how does it work?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:13 PM)

Honestly, people that work on the show get it - I never see it. I don't know if they are able to answer every question. Twitter (@matthewberrytmr) is the easiest way to get a hold of me though I don't get a chance to get to as many questions as I like...

KJ (St. Paul)

Is McCoy unusable from here on out?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:14 PM)

Unusable? No. But no question - Vick and Weaver have both cut into his value considerably. He's certainly not a guy I trust except in deep leagues

Paul (KC)

If you could only own 1 of A. Foster, J. Harrison, C. Jennings, or Q. Ganther, who would you want?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:15 PM)

Ganther. He's the one that is guaranteed the most touches of those. I'm not sure what to make of CLE or HOU

Angela (Houston TX)

TMR - Can you please help tonight ! Do I go with a throwing Warner or Alex Smith trying to keep pace? Gore in an offense trying to keep up or Wells ( with the potential for garbage time) ? I need 25 to make the playoffs. Thanks

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:16 PM)

Warner over Smith. Gore over Wells.

Eric (Calgary)

You are all that is man.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:18 PM)

That means... sniff... so much, man... sniff, hug, awkward realization that we are embracing, quick disengage.

Andrew (Everett Wa)

Lively conversation last week in response to one of EK's articles. Was wondering what your take on waiver-wire access between playoff and non-playoff teams was?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:21 PM)

Didn't see the article. But assuming it is a NON-Keeper league... I believe you should NOT allow non playoff teams to claim waivers. OR, if you do, then limit access to playoff teams - they have to play with who got them there. It's just not a fair way - who knows how many teams are playing it out after the playoffs are set etc

Adam (Chicago)

Happy 4th Night! Get anything sweet thus far?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:22 PM)

A nice flat screen TV... so yes. Happy Hannukah to you too...

John (SF, CA)

As a Redskins fan, I will take your word on this: Is the Q a better start than PT or FJax? At least he seems to be the number 1 option instead of in a time-share with others

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:24 PM)

Well, I'll have him ranked higher than F Jax next week vs NE. As for PT, depends on Bell's health. If I was ranking today, I'd probably have Thomas slightly higher. But I am a Ganther believer...

Brian Westbrook (Philly)

Delaware County Times reporting I am likely to play this weekend. What are your thoughts? If I am a free agent in a league, would you pick me up?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:25 PM)

Haven't seen that report, but yes, I would pick you up but would not start you in anything but the deepest of leagues until I saw you in a game...

Jeremy (Indy)

Congrats on the FF Podcast awards! Jason Campbell has put together some nice performances, where do you have him ranked going forward?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:27 PM)

We discussed him on the podcast this morning and he's been in my pick-up column a few weeks now. Last three weeks, he has outscored Tom Brady every single week, for example. Like him this week vs NYG on MNF at home... he's in my top 15 now and expect double digit pts the rest of the way...

Andrew (TX)

Podcast awards = best Hanukkah present ever. Pick 2 for the rest of the season: Garcon, Burleson, Bowe, Antonio Bryant?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:32 PM)

Very, very true. Thank you to all who voted. Well, Garcon doesn't have a great sked and worried that a resting Wayne will put even more focus on him. Bryant has a very struggling Josh Freeman to deal with... Nate's QB play makes me nervous though, so I rank them Bowe, Pierre, Nate, Bryant.

Brit (VA)

Time to abandon Olsen as a TE option the rest of the way? Should I just roll with Fred Davis and hope the chemistry between him and Campbell continues down the stretch?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:33 PM)

Yes. Olsen will be in Dumpsville tomorrow.

Dan (The other Dan) (Winter Haven, FL)

Pick one:A smoking hot chick at the bar who digs you and takes you home for the night, orBeating your most hated rival in Fantasy Football, knocking him out of the playoffs?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:35 PM)

Hmmm. Great question. Assuming I am single at the time, I'll say the girl. I've said this before... I care much more about my picks and advice than I do about individual leagues. Once I got this job... there's not a league in America that I could win that's better than being a fantasy guy at ESPN, you know? Don't mean to sound cocky - just... it's the truth.

Bizaro Dan (summer haven FL)

Reggie Wayne or Roddie White this week? One will be seeing limited playing time, the other will be vacationing at a horrible place called Revis island. Thanks bud.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:36 PM)

Wayne. White will probably be outside my top 30.

JC (DC)

Playoff Strategy Question! I don't really need a pickup this week but want to prevent my opponent from picking up. He needs a TE and Defense and the best available options are Fred Davis and Houston (@ STL). He has a higher waiver priority and will be picking up Jennings (CLE) first. Who should I focus my pick on: Davis or Houston? (He has Carlson and Indy's D (at Jax).

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:38 PM)

HOU D. Carlosn gets TB at home- they are pretty bad vs TE, so the diffence between Davis and Carlson not as big as potential of HOU D. But obviously, try for both. I like the defensive minded strategy!

Paul (Kalamazoo, MI)

Up by 1 with Frank "the Tank" Gore left to play...my opponent has nobody. Do I bench Gore and hope for no stat corrections tomorrow or play him and hope that he doesn't fumble on the first play and get knocked out for the entire game?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:40 PM)

I think you play him. Chances of Gore having a "R Moss" type game is less than chances are of some stat correction - too close for comfort.

Chris (CT)

Blake Lively hottest chick alive!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:41 PM)

Could not disagree more.

Big Mike (Denver)

SInce you are the head of ESPN fantasy, can you fire the other guys? Also, does Beanie Wells (who plays the "we give up 300 yards on the ground") make a better play than PT this week?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:43 PM)

Hah! First, I am NOT the head of ESPN Fantasy. Nate oversees all the content, a guy named Jason Waram oversees our games and business. But even if I was... no. They all do a great job. Trust me... there are many people in a Karabell or Chris Harris chat asking why can't ESPN get rid of Berry? We have many voices, different styles... someone for everyone. As for Wells, let's see what happens tonight. But certainly, all hands on deck for DET... you have to love him and Hightower next week.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:44 PM)

K in Philly - I can't print that, but that is hilarious.

Elvis, one of Santa's Elves (N. Pole)

Why post some dumb non-sequitur that you disagree with instead of answering real questions? Try one: What about Randy? Safer than a Meachem or S. Rice going forward?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:48 PM)

Because that's what I do! Yes, I'm a little worried about Randy. This is now 4 straight games with under 70 yards. Yes, he's scored in some of them so you don't care or have noticed as much, but yeah.... this is why he was in my "Hate" section last week. BUF is much better against the pass than folks realize. I will have him ranked above those two guys for Week 15 (based on match-ups and Harvin's expected return), but at the moment, I trust Rice the rest of the year slightly more.

Eric (Calgary)

Its funny, I think I actually read your chats and columns more for the non-fantasy related stuff. Not that I don't respect your opinion, i think its one of the best out there, i just respect my own more. So I read your for your funny intros and hilarious questions.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:49 PM)

I get a lot of "I love the stories, jokes, etc" and hate your advice, I get a lot of "Skip the nonsense, I just want your advice" and everything in between. I just try to do what i do and am glad people keep reading / watching / listening... whatever their motivation to do so may be.

TMR Reader (Michigan)

TMR I think your "Prayer" column came out pretty dark last week. I get the sarcasm, but has this Football Season been a little rough on you or what?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:50 PM)

Really? I just thought it was funny. Heard the song, thought that was a good jumping off point. Doing two of these a week, I'm always looking for anything interesting for an open...

Bryan (The OH)

What happened to the Packers air attack against a weak Chicago D? Can they bounce back vs Pitt next week?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:52 PM)

Yes. It was one bad game for Rodgers. Relax. He will be fine. And it's actually a good match-up ... PIT pass d ain't the same.

Kim Deal (CA)

Oh shut up Eric! This is how you kiss @ss....Mathew (Marilyn voice). Handsome. I'm in desperate need of your help. Peyton might sit. What's a girl to do?(Do I start Garrard, Campbell, or Hasselbeck over Peyton this week?...next??)

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:54 PM)

Hahaha. I'm not convinced that's the case, but I like Campbell the most of the ones you have listed....

Eric (TN)

Marion Barber has got to be making a bee line to dumpsville. Should I pick up Ganther ?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:56 PM)

Yes, I'd rather have Ganther than Barber the rest of the way. Can't believe it but it's true. Crazy game, huh?

Newt (Jacksonville)

Is 2010 the bell lap for Howard Stern?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:56 PM)

No. I believe he re-signs.

Dave (PA)

So I spent a 3rd rnd pick on Roddy White, only benched him on his bye week and not even a flex play this weekend one game away from the fantasy championship? The problem is I know its the right thing to do...just so hard to come to grips with it

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:58 PM)

I know. I understand. But at this point in the season where you drafted someone matters not at all. Look at what I wrote about Ganther / Barber.

Erik (Philadelphia)

Is Nicks a better option than MSW or Burleson now? He looked pretty solid last night.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:01 PM)

That was a crazy game last night. I don't trust him next week @WSH. Redskins a good pass defense...

Ludwig Boltzmann (Vienna)

My Dallas Clark resting insurance is Bo Scaife. Should I look elsewhere if VY is out?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:03 PM)

Yes...

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:04 PM)

Ok gang... I have to run. Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to listen to our podcast every day.... on the fantasy pages or at podcenter on ESPNRadio.com
