Short delay, I apologize. Will be back in roughly five minutes...
Apologies folks, here we go...
The Colts front seven put forth a gutsy performance last night! I'm not at all in the camp that they didn't play up to par.
Eric Foster rated it as unacceptable. Was enough to win with certainly.
Paul, I left work early for your chat. It's 1pm in Hollywood.
What are you working on really?
When are we going to see PK vs a horse? You're like the Ochocinco of the ESPN blogs.
Thanks? The budget has no room for a horse. Will have to settle for Graham.
When you look at the stats Houston is a much better team on O than on D. But I still feel like the O is stagnant way to often while the D is closer to living up to its potential. What do you think would be most likely to lift the stagnation on offense:1. Better play calling. More mixing the run and pass rather than only passing till you get enough of a lead then running constantly for a yard or two at a time.2. More toughness on the interior line. Even before injuries they didn't get push up the middle.3. Health and depth. Less Daniels, Slayton or O line injuries, and better play from those who have to step up.
Better interior line and a better running back.
As a Colts fan, give me a reason to not think the Colts are likely to lose their first game in the playoffs. Also, who should the Colts least want to face in any round of the playoffs?
They've consistently found a way, they won't get discouraged or think here we go again if things go badly early. I don't see them fearing anyone. Maybe they'd enjoy beating the Patriots most. But for safety sake, if they could avoid one team early, I'd probably say NE. San Diego is the primary threat, obviously.
Doesn't it seem like an unusually large percentage of Manning's picks this year have come on tipped passes? Does ESPN keep track of that stat?
Send a not to the mailbag and I can look into it. I think you could be onto something.
With the Jags loss last night, can you comment on how that impacts the Titans' slim chances of making playoff? Thx.
Good for Tennessee. Jags beat Titans in any tiebreaker. In any scenario where Titans get in, they have to be a game better than Jacksonville.
Isn't it clear that I should be let go?
You are struggling. But you don't kick a first-rounder to the curb without knowing where you are heading.
PK you're a great chat host and Ima let you finish, but I gotta say that Tim Graham had one of the greatest chats of all-time today!
Please stop interrupting. I see the celebs are out in force. Cool.
I noticed Pierre Garcon disappeared after halftime of the game last night. Did he get injured? If so what do you think that does to the Colts' chances of a Super Bowl run?
I believe he suffered a chest injury. Why jump to the conclusion that he's gone beyond a half?
Two things, Paul. First, I cannot help but think Jacksonville played a great game offensively. I don't recall a game where they executed their game plan so effectively. How much would you assess that is overall improvement as a team opposed to the lack of Freeney and Mathis being on the field for all 4 quarters?Second. Is it really worth keeping Adam Vinatieri and Anthony Gonzalez on the active roster? Certainly they could provide depth elsewhere with those spots, when do you think that will be addressed at the latest if they cannot be ready to go for the playoffs?
Where are they lacking in depth, and why would an extra backup at X help them if he's never going to see the field? Great offense by Jags last night, but Garrard's high throws and late lack of production held them back.
Paul - I am beginning to worry but need some direction in what to worry most about: A) when our luck will run out in the 4th quarter of a game, or B) how we might match up with the Chargers in the playoffs, or C) where to put our next superbowl trophy? Thoughts?
I'd say B is a good place right now.
What are the Titans chances of making the playoffs with a win this weekend?
They're chances are gone if they lose. Winning could keep slim hope alive, but they can't clinch anything. If they get in it won't be until they finishing winning in Seattle.
Hey Paul thanks for chatting with us. I know Santa has his hands full this Christmas, but do you think if I asked him for the Titans to make the playoffs this year he would oblige me. I mean we would only need the Ravens and Jets both to lose 2 of there three remaining games the Jaguars and Steelers would have to both lose once more before the season is over, not to mention us having to also win out by beating the Dolphins and Chargers in the next two weeks before finishing out west with Seattle.... Thats not too much to ask for is it?
Yeah, that's nothing.
Doesn't the fact that my special teams unit allowed a return TD to Chad Simpson confirm that Caldwell should get Coach of the Year honors for firing me?
Was an interesting turn of events I could help but point out in one of my in-game posts.
I was at the Jaguars Game Last night, As a lifetime fan of the franchise its clear that last night game is David in a nutshell He can make spectacular plays/and horrific blunders on a regular basis. The Jags are putting pieces together but its become clear to a large group of the fanbase he isnt one of those pieces longterm... Your thoughts...?
Yeah, they need better. And his number is something they can't pay him next year. Reduce his price, draft his competition.
As a Colts fan, I really like how Caldwell handled playing Freeney and Mathis last night, limiting them to obvious passing downs and then the last two or three series. It was a gutsy move to dress them at all, but it worked. If Caldwell keeps pulling the right strings and gets the Colts to 16-0 and relatively healthy, do you see any way he doesn't win Coach of the Year?
Yup. The way where Sean Payton gores 16-0. Wrong or right, plenty of voters will think Caldwell inherited a great situation and only managed not to mess it up. Marvin Lewis could win it too, I think.
What are my chances @ DROY?
Not even DROY in the division. See Brian Cushing.
PK, for what it's worth, during the radio broadcast Lamey reported that Garcon had a hand injury. He did come back on the field for at least one play though.
Sorry, Confused Simpson and Garcon injuries.
What About Me?
You're not DROY on your team.
What percent chance do you give to this scenario? Pittsburgh loses to Green Bay, Tennessee beats Miami, Chicago beats Baltimore, Atlanta beats NY Jets. Then next week, New England beats Jacksonville, Indy beats Jets, Pittsburgh beats Baltimore, San Diego beats Tennessee. Texans win out (include beating Miami) to make the playoffs.
Let's stick to Sunday. I don't see Chicago or Atlanta winning and think it's unlikely both of them will.
What was wrong with Garrard late? He missed two open receivers on the last drive. It was like he had mustard on his hands or something?
Got nervous in the clutch?
Paul,Why is everyone suggesting that colts should be worried about the chargers? The game would be in indy, and they almost won in SD last year, if not for bad refree calls and penalties. And who knows if the chargers get past the divisional round!
The Chargers are the second best team in the AFC and are hot. That alone is a reason you'd rather play someone else, no?
what is your take on Bruce Matthews being added to the offensive line staff and the struggles in the running game?
Has he been carrying the ball or blocking? A Hall of Famner working as the third coach of the offensive line surely hasn't had a negative impact on the running game.
Am I the only one who is reminded of Owen Daniels when looking at me? Throw me the ball Matt!
I'd like to see you more involved.
I was invisible last night? A dead corpse could have had the same impact. What does my team need to do to get to the playoffs?
You were great on third down early on, led your team with nine targets and six catches and had a TD. What are you talking about?
PK....Does Peyton know I'm here Or was I picked up because Kendra visits me in the locker room?
Why would you play unless someone in front of you was hurt or rested?
Why isn't Sean Considine at Strong and Gerald Alexander at Free a better combination than Reggie Nelson and either one of the former?
Good question for JDR.
Tennessee needs a LDE or RDE a LCB a MLB after they dont resign Tullywill all this come from the draft. i actually think they resign Bullock...
Tully will only be restricted if there is no CBA and cap, and it's looking like there won't be. Bulluck will get a bigger offer elsewhere, I am confident.
Will Kubiak be kubiback next year?
I think Bob McNair wants very much not to make a change. But he may not have decided for sure yet.
I don't understand that CotY argument. Both Payton and Lewis were head coaches with those teams last year. Which indicates to me that the change is less about coaching and more about players.
Voters like turnaround stories and the award usually goes to the coach of a team that's turned things around.
I think Garrard has problems throwing to the sidelines. Depth perception problems?
He is definitely better in the middle of field and the seams.
Paul, you've been covering the NFL for a long time. Have you ever seen someone who makes difficult throws look as routine as Manning does?
Nope. It's something to behold.
Our offense is as easy to figure out as a one piece puzzle. Is Cutler not good or is it the offense?
He's not good with that cast around him.
Does anyone remember in the preseason when everyon was saying CJ was running poorly and that he wasn't better than Slaton and Forte and that the he was overrated? Fisher told he they weren't scheming to run, and almost 2000 yards later I think it's funny no one remembers that even happened. Do you remember that time PK?
I remember getting killed for saying in a podcast I'd take him over MJD and Slaton.l
Won't it be funny when everyone thats hatin on me this year realizes I have a torn labrum or something and I'm still out there semi-dominating with my one armed tackles?
Be less funny if the team was honest about it during the season instead of hanging you out to look bad, if that's indeed the case.
How's my case for MVP after last night?
Strong, I think. But Brees will have something to say about it still.
Graham says he got you the Matt Roth sleeveless t for Christmas. What did you get for him?
Chris Johnson's video on how to run fast. Won't help.
How was the nap on the plane back to Tennessee?
Refreshing, thanks. Only wish it was a longer flight!
I was just wondering, if Chris Johnson manages to get 2,000 yards this year and somehow the Titans manage to sneak into the playoffs, do you think CJ would get the nod for MVP or OPOFY? I'm assuming he would be very unlikely to get either if Tennessee doesn't make the playoffs...
I think he will get OPOY. I don't think he gets MVP even if they are in the playoffs, unless he breaks Dickerson's mark maybe.
I'm not getting nearly enough touches in this offense. With my skill level, the Titans should be milking me like a common dairy cow. Will somebody please throw me the ball?
Kenny Britt should be ahead of you as a target for sure.
Oy Vey!! Is Vince "The Thief" Young going to be the starting QB next year? He seems to have command of his team. it seems they will come with, and win alot of games.
It's looking like.
With the x pick in the 2010 NFL draft, the Houston Texans have selected.....
Just so I am sure I understand... You want me to know where they are picking, have a handle on college prospects and know which ones will still be available and have a sense of remaining needs after free agency?
If the Titans started VY at the beginning of the year what would their record be?
7-6 maybe 8-5...
Agree or disagree. AFC South has 2 of the 3 best DE's, RB's and WR's in the league along with the best QB. Embarassment of riches for you to cover?
Agree. Amazing three of the teams are going to be in the 8-8 neighborhood.
Paul - how scared should the Dolphins be of Chris Johnson? Would you take the over/under on 40+ yard plays by Johnson if the line was 1.5 (Tim took the under)?
Probably the under. But it doesn't mean he won't have a lot of yards. He's as scary as anyone in the league.
Do you think Jacksonville will have enough picks next year to shore up their roster and be more competitive, or are they at least one more draft beyond that?
Well if they've been this close this year, I think even a draft minus two picks and some mid-level free agents could be enough. But a lot depends on who the QB is.
Tim G sent me over here to make you feel wanted. i told him it was a lost cause but here I am.
Can't you guys see he's trying to clear out his chat so he can get on to play pong?
Why isn't Heimerdinger mentioned more as a head coaching candidate? What he has done meshing the talents of CJ and Young, and playing to both of their strengths, has been fun to watch. He is easily one of the most innovative play callers in football IMO.
What did you think of his innovation at 0-6? Very good coach who probably gets a look in time.
Truth be told, which of the four divisional stadiums has the best Press Box?
Tennessee, without question. It's 1,000 feet lower than the other three.
Who is the best cb in the division?
Cortland Finnegan or Kelvin Hayden.
Should I put a down payment on a house in Jacksonville today? Maybe Gerrard's house goes up for sale?
He's not the guy. Neither are you.
It seemed like Pat McAfee's kick-offs were shorter than normal last night. Was that by design or just a bad night?
He slipped on one that went short and left.
So many of the so called "experts" on espn, nfl network, etc... week in and week out have been saying "this is the week Indy gets beat" and they just cant keep winning these close battles in the fourth quarter, but when the Saints pull out a come from behind win they are a team of destiny. Whats the deal here are these guys just sick of seeing Indy winning like this every year? I think when you are 14-0 and having a winning streak of 23 games that you deserve some credit. The Saints even have their own tab at the bottom of the screen on ESPN. When do the Colts get their much deserved credit.
I always marvel at the way fans can get all caught up in this lack of credit or respect. If you're a Colts fan, why do you care. Why not enjoy and savor it instead of worrying what some former player thinks?
Paul, Derrick Brooks has been sitting at home all year. Do you believe he could have contributed to the Colts? I know it goes against Polian's philosophy though.
The Colts are undefeated. How are we second-guessing any personnel moves?
Im seriously worried about losing Bethea in the offseason due to how important he has been to the successs of this team. Do you see the Colts trying to keep him around or do you think they will be outbid?
They should be outbid.
Paul last year you made a statement of pointing out which games the titans would have lost with VY can you do the same now with which games they would have won with him
I think they probably would have beaten Houston and/or Jacksonville if he was playing then like he's played this season.
I'M AWAKE NOW!! AND I'M VERY WET!!!!!!
Have no fear, Mom's in control of things right now.
Do you think CJ gets 100 rush yards this weekend?
Just got done with film. I'm loving what Coyer has for us. Do you think my talent was wasted for a few years or am I just now making my mark?
You were good for them in years past. Nice to see them expand things and you benefit. But you missed a fumble recovery and got run over by MJD on his TD in the first half last night.
I have a secret stash of Zima that I put in the Indianapolis press area before the Patriots game, hoping I'd get to it during the Jets game. If you're there and I'm not, I want you to have it.
Such a giver. But I won't be there either.
RE: Bethea's status. With the no cap stuff coming up that is bringing with it some restrictions, is there still a period of time where only the Colts can negotiate with him? (Assuming they don't work something out beforehand, of course)
You can negotiate with your guys until free agency officially opens, end of Feb. or start of March. If they go to the Super Bowl, it's not a very long window. He is a key guy for them. But we need to find out if no cap means the Colts will become bigger spenders or if they will still be very strict on their budget.
Can MVP voters choose to have a co-MVP or does the voting have to randomly turn out split in order for there to be a co-MVP? My thinking is that if Brees and Manning both have undefeated teams when the voting takes place the voters will choose to split the award if possible. Considering how both QBs have played, I couldn't argue with that logic.
I think you can split your vote. But to tie it has to come out 25-25.
I noticed that Tim didn't end his chat be telling his readers to "stay tuned for Paul". Leno used to do that for me. It made me a big enough star to take over the Tonight Show... then he took an earlier show with all the viewers and guests
And things really heated up for Letterman, who's better than all of you.
Can you confirm/deny whether Schaub has a big pending bonus for playing all 16? Also, if that is the case, would he still be out there playing otherwise?
Don't know about bonus. But why wouldn't he be playing?
Paul Floyd Reese Bill's GM Yea or Nay?
They should consider him, sure.
C.J. Spiller, Ryan Mallet and Terrence Cody are on the board.....I need your advice Paul!
Isn't Mallett a sophomore?
With all the rookies that have been contributing, this season ticket holder thinks the arrow is pointing up for the Jaguars. In my opinion, the off-season's priorities should be D-line, safety, developmental QB. Let's open up the competition & see what Luke McCown can do at QB too.
Luke is not the answer. Arrow is up. Schedule will be more difficult. Agree with your positions, but would say starting QB and add center.
Does it look like the Titans will regret giving up their 2nd round pick to the Pats for Cook (TE)? Pre-season chatter had him making an immediate impact but he's barely seen any action.
Can't judge him on his rookie year alone. We won't know the answer for a while.
"The New Jersey native and Columbia graduate lives in Nashville with his wife and son" This is ridiculous. How does the slobbering, crying thing that you brought home get top billing over me?
Sorry pal, but I'm never gonna be the guy who mentions his dog in his bio. You're the best, though.
The Indy Star had a great article on Bob Lamey this week. What is it like working with him in the press box? He is a legend back home!
Great guy, great talent. Fellow Yankees fan. He and the broadcast crew have their own booth at a game though, so we're not really rubbing elbows during a game.
Hey Paul, where do you see the colts in 5 years? do you think theyll still be dominating or is it just this season?
Just this season? They just set a record for wins in a decade. They're going to be good as long as Peyton and Polian are around.
Let's say the Colts and Saints play each other, you taking over/under 70 points?
Seems so obvious that it's then the game that goes the other way and is 17-14.
It's looking more and more like the Jaguars should have drafted Chad Henne in 2008. I guess that kind of decision making is why Gene has the conn?
Way too easy to look back and say who a team should have taken. Everyone should have taken Brady, right?
I hit your mailbag with a message about salary cap hell, and wondered what happened to it and why the Colts have avoided it all decade. If you don't get to it in a mailbag, do you have any ideas about this?
The caps has gone way up. Hardly anyone struggles up against it anymore. Colts star power has made them have to work harder at it than most.
What is the difference between the Colts and the Saints in terms of media perception? Someone even called the Saints 'America's team.' Is it because this is new for them? What makes the Saints resonate with people, compared to the Colts who appear efficient but dull?
The Colts are hardly dull or perceived as dull. But yes, a team whose fans used to wear paper bags over their heads out of embarrassment bidding for 16-0 is a different story than the team that's won the most games in the decade going 16-0.
Do you think the Colts offensive line should get more props for their under the radar performances?
I think Manning makes them look good. Not sold on Johnson as a long term answer or on DeVan. And some people in the know say Diem's slipping.
Who do the Colts have behind Jennings at CB? It seems like he's always getting picked on.
T.J. Rushing. No way a better option.
is michael griffen's play this year that bad or is it something else
That bad. What else could it be?
Who would you put your money on for this superbowl? i wanna win some money but i want a professional opinion.
Sorry, chief, not what I do.
I'm tired of you ducking our race. You willing to just admit, once and for all, you're avoiding my inevitable victory?
Chief, stop pretending you are in Bristol. I'm not coming to Buffalo. You come to Nashvegas, I will race you anytime. Though I'd prefer to get back in shape first. I know you are unfamiliar with that concept.
It will be interesting to see what GM Gene does with fewer picks. I think Smith should be in the conversation for Executive of the Year. I agree about center. Meester was almost Pro Bowl level for a long time, but he's old & been getting hurt the past 2 years.
By fewer picks we're really talking "without a second." Because a missing seventh is hardly going to hurt. And they can get a Russell Allen or William Middleton after that.
Yea but payton is gettin old. where will they be when they lose him?
You're saying Manning is getting old? Good quarterbacks play a long time. He can go as long as Favre or Elway or Marino. If you're making plans for his retirement party of counting on it to help your team break through, you've got a long wait.
When I retire, should I hand my job over to our newest VP, my son Chris?
It's already set up for that.
I just got fined $10,000 for throwing a ball into the stands. What does a footbal go for these days anyway?
You've done it before and paid the price. Laughable, sure. But the league worries you'll bonk some unsuspecting kid in the head.
Am I out performing my expectations?
Why does everyone always hate on me? I go in and do what I need to do. What do you expect out of the #4 corner on the depth chart?
I tend to agree with you. Passes get completed in this league by QBs other than Manning.
You're already in shape Paul, it's called a square.
As compared to your oval?
Put on your Mel Kiper wig and take a guess at which position you think will be the biggest priority to upgrade for each AFC South team next season?
Houston -- RB and FS or CBIndy -- OTJacksonville -- QBTennessee -- CB or DE
Colts Special teams play improving or last nights kick return a fluke?
Coverage has been better. Nice return breakthrough last night, but I wouldn't count on another TD anytime soon.
What's Vince's trade value now that he's shown he can play?
Don't know. Don't think trading him helps the Titans now.
Peyton being so good is not because of his physical ability its because of his mental ability, Do you think after he retires he would be able to coach up another quarterback to be as good as he is?
It take physical ability to make those throws. No, I don't think that at all.
theirs no doubt that This will be a great superbowl. any predictions on the MVP?
We're skipping right past who's in the game to who wins MVP?
How do I get the job of being T-Rac during home games?
Filled. He does look for baby T-Racs sometimes to follow him around.
With the game on the line in the playoffs do you think Stover WILL kick a GW 40+ FG?
He could. But I bet Manning gets them close enough to make it a 37-yarder.
Just out of curiosity, Who wins the AFC South next year?
Hard not to say Colts.
I would argue that Manning's strength might better equip him to have success as an "elder" QB more so than a Elway, Marino or Farve. Manning gets rid of the ball quickly, so he doesn't take very many hits. He's never been a runner, instead relying on nimble feet to move around the pocket. And, while he might lose a little bit of pop on his passes, his touch should remain excellent for many years to come. Texan, Titan and Jaguar fans shouldn't hold their breath if they're hoping for Manning to retire or suffer a significant drop off in play.
Just wanted to make a PSA here: Head on over and vote for me to the Pro Bowl!
Who's voting for him and why? Someone have the stones to step forward and admit it. I will do a post on you explaining yourself. Just hit the mailbag.
Enjoyed it folks. Hope you have a lovely evening and weekend. Talk to you on the blog.
