Thursday Night Hockey chat

Barry Melrose
  (3:02 PM)

If you're a Rangers fan, it has to be a tough day realizing that you are the fourth best team in the New York Metro area. Far from where we thought you would be.

jim (pit)

evgeni malkin is just as good as crosby and ovechkin so start talking about him like he is ok

Barry Melrose
  (3:03 PM)

You can make an argument that he his. If he was on a team by himself, then you're right, there would be a lot more ink about Malkin. He is just as good as Crosby and Ovechkin.

ryan (so cal)

who is the Kings goalie in 2011 Bernier or Quick?

Barry Melrose
  (3:04 PM)

I would say Quick. The way he's playing, he looks better than Bernier. Right now, he's past Bernier on the depth chart.

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Who is a better team right now, the Rangers or Islanders? It seems like they are moving in opposite directions despite the stellar play of Gaborik.

Barry Melrose
  (3:06 PM)

If you watched the game last night, you have to say the Islanders. They look faster and hungrier than the Rangers. Like I said before, the Rangers are the fourth best team in the New York City area.

Jim Neveau (Aroma Park, IL)

Barry, what is your favorite third jersey in the NHL? I'm partial to St. Louis' sweater, but I'm interested in your thoughts.

Barry Melrose
  (3:07 PM)

I would say the Wild third jersey. I think it's simple but sharp. It looks like an old school jersey which I like.

Louis (Pennsylvania)

When will teams go back to wearing the home white jerseys?

Barry Melrose
  (3:08 PM)

The NHL has a plan on when they will switch it up. They usually do it every couple of years. Only the NHL knows when they will go back to the while home jerseys.

Scott (PA)

How about those pens leading the leagues in hits

Barry Melrose
  (3:09 PM)

What's amazing to me is that they are they are one of the best teams in the league but they have the second worst power play in the league.

Rob (New Jersey)

Barry, Chris Pronger led a #8 seed in the playoffs to much success in Edmonton in 2006, and then in Anaheim last year. It looks if the Flyers are going to make the playoffs, it will be a high seed. Can Pronger lead yet another underdog this April?

Barry Melrose
  (3:10 PM)

That was the plan when they got him but it hasn't worked out for them just yet. Philly is on the outside of the playoffs looking in. They need to get their act together if they want to make it.

Jake (NYC)

Hey Barry, I am a huge Devils fan, and contrary to what most other Devils fans are saying, we get plenty of love. The one person I think has not gotten any love and should be getting tons is John MaClean. Give the Lowell head coach and long time fan favorite some credit for preparing his players for the big stage and still keeping his own squad competitive in the NHL. Can't be long before we see him behind the Devils bench again. Thanks!

Barry Melrose
  (3:12 PM)

The Atlantic League coach is a big part of it. New Jersey is a great story with all the injuries and everyone they lost over the summer, they are still playing well. I think it's pretty amazing.

Scott (PA)

why doesnt the pens defense get a lot of credit. They are also leading the league in hits.

Barry Melrose
  (3:13 PM)

The Penguins have so many great players. The guys that score the goals and get the points usually get most of the glory and defensive players never really gets talked about. That's the way it has been for 50 years and that's the way it will be for 50 more.

bobby (detroit)

do you think philly could take the "C" from richards and get similar results that San Jose is getting from Marleau after the same tactic

Barry Melrose
  (3:15 PM)

The only reason you would do that is if Richards is proving not to be a good captain and the only people who know that are the folks in the locker room. We haven't heard any news coming out of Philly that Richards isn't doing his job so I would be very surprised to see him get his "C" taken away.

tony c. (glendale az.)

I know there are a lot of early season contenders so far , but do you think that Dave Tippett is the leading contender fo coach of the year?

Barry Melrose
  (3:17 PM)

I think he is in the running, and so is Terry Murry of Los Angeles and Jacques Lemaire of New Jersey. Mike Babcock of the Red Wings has also done a great job but certainly Tippett has done a fantastic job.

Ryan (Pittsburgh, PA)

What are your thoughts on tonight's Pens Flyers game in Philadelphia, considering the results of Tuesday's matchup.

Barry Melrose
  (3:18 PM)

I hope it's as good of a game as we saw on Tuesday. I think the Flyers will be much better and hungrier in Philadelphia. I think the Flyers will win this game.

Ryan (Pittsburgh, PA)

What do you think has been the key to Crosby suddenly becomming a goal scorer? Is it just him putting more pucks on the net?

Barry Melrose
  (3:19 PM)

Yes, he's shooting more. He has always been a guy that passes first and shoots second.

Jeremy (MN)

The goalie you want out there that will shut any team down in a shoot out?????

Barry Melrose
  (3:21 PM)

In a shootout? I don't have the numbers in front of me and the NHL keeps numbers like that but I would say Martin Brodeur.

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Barry, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try to make the ESPN curling segment happen during the Olympics like you talked about on the podcast. Sportsnation wants to see you demonstrate throwing the rock wearing a purple pinstripe suit and wingtips while EJ, Joy, Barnaby and Buccigross sweep.

Barry Melrose
  (3:22 PM)

We're working on it. We have to find a rink. I think it would be funny seeing Joy and EJ on the ice being taught by the maestro, ME!

Knish (NYC)

Do the Devils have what it takes to make a run at Cup? How good will this D be when Paul Martin comes back?

Barry Melrose
  (3:24 PM)

That's what I mean about this team. They continue to win with the core of their guys out. When they get players back from injury, they will be a team that no one wants to play. They will be scary.

Rick (MN)

You are starting a new team and Ovechkin and Crosby are already gone...who is the player you want on your team to be the center piece?

Barry Melrose
  (3:25 PM)

That would have to Maulkin. He is an unbelievable player. He's the third guy in the league that I would want.

tony c. (glendale az.)

With the current state of the Coyotes, will they be able to hang in the playoff chase if they don't add some scoring help?

Barry Melrose
  (3:26 PM)

I tell you, I don't see why not. I don't see any reason why this team will fall apart. Right now, they look like a playoff team.

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Which number will be greater tonight in Philly....the Pens margin of victory, the number of fights, the number of cheap shots/bites/hits from behind by the Flyers, the number of times the Philly fans boo their own team?

Barry Melrose
  (3:27 PM)

You sound like a strong Penguins fan. I would say there will be a lot of cheap shots by both teams. Neither team likes each other and it will show tonight.

Mitch (MN)

Give us one or two of the most underrated players in the NHL that don't get enough credit

Barry Melrose
  (3:28 PM)

Good question! I have to think about that one and give you the answer later.

RJ (Boston)

Barry,How over rated is Derek Morris (Completely, Mostly, Somewhat or Not At All)? the guy came up highly touted and never did much for CO, signed for great money in Calgary and did a whole lot not much... now he's in Boston turning over the puck while to start a 6 on 4 Empty Net power play....

Barry Melrose
  (3:29 PM)

He maybe overpaid but that's not his fault. He's a good tall defenseman and if you look at what he's getting paid, you might expect more out of him.

Mitch (MN)

okay.....time's up

Barry Melrose
  (3:30 PM)

(Laughing) I need more than five minutes to think about it. I'll get back to you next week!

Barry Melrose
  (3:31 PM)

We have some great games tonight. Rangers-Islands to go along with Penguins-Flyers. Should be a great night worth of games.

Buzzmaster
  (3:37 PM)

Thanks for chatting Barry! Matthew Barnaby will be here at 4 p.m. ET to chat!

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:11 PM)

It should be some emotional rivalry games tonight. Islanders-Rangers, Pitt-Philly. This is the time of year that focus is so important for all of these teams. Let's get to your questions.

Loup (DC)

How ridiculous is the Western Conference. Phoenix is 7-1-1 in their last 9 and they still have gone nowhere in the standings. Can we please get rid of the OTL please? Or at least make all games worth 3 points?

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:12 PM)

I totally agree with you. It's so hard to follow and it does exactly what the NHL wants it to do which is keep the races close to the end. A loss is a loss and should be worth no points. Great point.

matt (florida)

When will the Rangers finally call up Grachev and Locke and bury these vetran's in the minors and let the kids play? It's about time isn't it?

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:14 PM)

After watching Torts' postgame press conference yesterday, something will happen very soon. I don't know who has stolen more money Wade Redden, Michael Rosival or Bernie Madoff. What bothers me most about watching this team is a compete level. They were awful last night in the first and the Garden let them have it. Torts will not stand for it any longer. Someone will go.

justin (california)

can my sharks win the stanley cup this year???

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:15 PM)

They were my pick at the start of the year and I'm standing by them. But there is so much parity in the league right now and if you watch Chicago and the New Jersey Devils play as of late, it will be a tough task. Staying healthy is key but they look very good.

Loup (DC)

Matt: Barry has finally come around and declaired the Coyotes a playoff team, Would you like to take a moment to recant all of your previous doubting of them? A win at Columbus tonight can only help :)

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:17 PM)

They are playing great. Great goaltending and great coaching is what they are getting right now. Dave Tippet is exactly what the Coyotes needed. I'm not going to declare them a playoff team quite yet, but they certainly are starting to make me think a bit more. Let's not pump Barry up too much, he did pick Philly to win the East. As you can see, he's not here to defend himself.

rob (new york)

When cah we expect Sather to be fired? Heard a rumor it could be by begining of next week! Any truth to that?

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:18 PM)

I'm sure there's rumblings and if you look at his track record, it has not been very good as of late. We missed the playoffs the three years I was there and with money just given away to undeserving free agents, he has to be on the hot seat. Great signing in Gaborik, but time will tell if he can stay healthy.

dennis (LA)

ARe the Kings for real?

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:19 PM)

I think so. This is a team that looks like they finally have found a goaltender in Quick. Drew Doughty and Anze Kopitar are superstars that have developed very quickly. You add in a strong leader and captain in Dustin Brown and a commitment to playing better defense. This is a playoff team and cause a few upsets in the playoffs.

Bill (FL)

What happened to the Canadiens? I thought they were improving last year?

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:21 PM)

I still like the Canadiens. Yes, they're a little bit small up front and they might address that when they decide to trade Halak. But this is a team with Camalerri and Gionta up front can provide the scoring they need. The key to this team, like most, is Carey Price, who has been very good as of late.

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:21 PM)

Let 10 free agents go in the summer. Will compete for the 8th spot. They are no where near the top, nor near the bottom.

Steve (CT)

Agree or disagree: The Sabres are an average team with a great goaltender.

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:22 PM)

I think they are an above average team because of the way they compete on a nightly basis. They have a goaltender that is playing the best of his career and gives them a chance when they don't score a lot. They are well coached and will definitely be a playoff team.

your namemike (los angeles)

do you see the kings maiking atrade soon after the christmas break to really put them over the top? theyre stacked in the minors and definitely have the assets to give away

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:24 PM)

There are rumors that they are sniffing around for a veteran that can make them even better. I do see them making a trade as they feel the league is wide open and they are as good as anyone with a little tinkering. I think the blueline is where they will add a veteran.

Nic (Bloomfield Hills, MI)

Babcock has to be considered COY when he has six studs missing from the lineup and they are only six points out of first!

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:25 PM)

This has been a weird team to follow. They are inconsistent at the start of the year with guys in the lineup. And as of late, they are finding ways to win with a ton of regulars out of the lineup. This is still a good team, not as good as previous years, but Babcock is a great coach and doesn't use injuries as excuses. Red Wings will make the playoffs and for the first time will be flying under the radar.

Jay (PA)

Matthew, how many fights do you think we'll see in the flyers-pens game tongiht? im wondering if i should tivo it or not.

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:27 PM)

This is a great rivalry and one I loved being a part of for years. I would bet that there will be a few fights. But Philly has to be careful to not let their emotions get the best of them. Sometimes when you expect a ton of fights, there aren't any at all. I think the game plan from Pittsburgh will be to be disciplined and try to suck Philly into penalties. I would TiVo it just in case.

Jay (PA)

FANTASY HOCKEY NEXT YEAR WHO U TAKINOVECHKIN OR CROSBY?

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:27 PM)

Ovechkin. Only because I think goals are worth more than assists. Never played before.

MIGUEL (EL PASO)

hey matthew, whatdo u expect from the winter classic when the flyers head up to fenway?

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:29 PM)

I think it is the greatest single day thing or event that has ever happened to our sport. It's a marketing dream and having been at the one in Buffalo it will not disappoint at Fenway. A great venue and hopefully good weather will be worth the ticket price and the TV audience. I hope there is a fight for the first time in an outdoor game, because I want to hear all of those fans cheer.

Mike (BIG D)

any chance the stars win the west this year or is it going to be the same ol detroit?

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:30 PM)

I don't think the Stars have the depth or the D to win the West. But if Marty Turco gets hot, anything is possible. They do have some scoring up front, but I don't think they can compete with the likes of Chicago or San Jose or even Vancouver for the most part in a seven game series.

Matthew Barnaby
  (4:31 PM)

Enjoy the hockey tonight. Enjoy the Game of the Night, which is the Kings and Flames. Should be some great hockey. See you next week.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:33 PM)

Greetings from San Jose puck heads, just got here last night after spending three days in Pebble Beach with NHL owners. Going to Ducks-Sharks game tonight. But first, some fun with you !

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Pierre, if you could make an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary about any hockey related topic, what would it be? I know there already was one about the Gretzky trade and the Miracle on Ice has been talked about a million times. Other good topics could be the WHA, the making of Slapshot, the '72 Summit Series, the '87 Canada Cup, the '96 World Cup of Hockey and the life and times of Barry Melrose.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:36 PM)

87 Canada Cup no question about it. I consider it the greatest hockey series ever played, Canada and USSR _ every game finished 6-5. For all the kids who are too young, go out and find the DVD. Lemieux, Gretzky, Messier, Coffey, Larionov, Makaraov, Krutov _ unbelievable.

Mike Fisher (Ottawa, ON)

Pierre, if I am named to the Canadian Olympic team I promise that Carrie Underwood will attend the games. I just thought Steve Yzerman needed to know that.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:37 PM)

Mike, that's not a bad card to play. Smart. You've certainly done a great job putting yourself on the radar after not being invited to the Olympic camp.

Brendan Witt (Long Island)

Now I know what it must have felt like to get hit by Scott Stevens...

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:38 PM)

LOL... and live to tell the tale !

Jim Neveau (Aroma Park, IL)

Pierre, with Antti Niemi notching 3 shutouts in 7 starts and Cristobal Huet playing a lot better, do the Blackhawks have the best 1-2 punch at goalie in the NHL?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:40 PM)

They've been impressive Jim but I no, I don't think they're the best 1-2 punch in the league. That remains the Achilles Heel of this team no matter what happens in the regular season !Fact it, Coach Q has his team limiting scoring chances and shots on his goalies. Great defensive game right now being played by the Hawks. But I've Huet on my fantasy team so I'm thrilled with his play :)

bobby (detroit)

with the emergence of pekka rinne, could dan ellis become a coveted player this offseason?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:43 PM)

Bobby, first the Preds need to sign Rinne. He's UFA July 1. Very very intresting contract talks those will be. They can't start talking until January. Imagine Rinne onthe open market !

Bill (Pasadena, CA)

Pierre, how likely is Quebec to get an expansion team? I loved the old battles between the Nordiques and Habs, and would they get to keep the old Jersey's?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:46 PM)

Hard to tell Bill. Here's my column from yesterday's wrap of the Board of Governors' meeting in Pebble Beach. I focused on league's future plans with another team in Canada...http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?columnist=lebrun_pierre&id=4749858

Loup (DC)

It is great to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel with the Coyotes sale. I have heard mixed things about the "neutral site" games. I would not mind 5 or 8 home dates being played in Saskatoon or Halifax, but can they seriously think that moving a home playoff date to one of these cities is ok? Please tell me they have dropped that from their innitial bid (back when the team was in bankruptcy). And is there a stipulation that removes the neutral site games if ticket sales in Phoenix get to a certain point? While they are handcuffed because of their ownership situation, do you see the Coyotes trying to make a big move for a scorer? It is something they need to get over the hump and they have a few valuable prospects in the minors they could move. Also, every day I see Peter Mueller's days in Phoenix shorter. Hi Pierre. Another week, more respectable Coyotes play. Currently 7-2-1 last 10. Are you a believer yet?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:50 PM)

Loup, wrote about the Ice Edge guys and Saskatoon in my blog yesterday, you can get your answers there: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4749912&name=lebrun_pierreThe Coyotes continue to impress. I have been a believer for a while now. Spoke to a Sharks player this morning who said David Tippett has them playing a very responsible and structured game. He said they were tough to play vs.

sean (los angeles)

the way lombardi built the kings (payroll, prospects, cap space) do you think this is just the begininning of many great things to come for tyhe kings?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:51 PM)

No question Sean. And they're not done adding pieces. I know they want to add a top-four blue-liner before March 3 and at some point another top-flight offensive player, whether that's before March 3 or in the off-season. Great, great times ahead for the Kings !

Matt (Detroit)

Are the wings gonna ruin someones season come playoff time? A young team that works hard to get a top seed just to have to play...the wings in the first round.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:53 PM)

Matt, that's indeed the most inriguing scenario right now in the West. The Wings as an eighth seed are a dangerous proposition if they get healthy. That's the last team on earth you'd want to face in the first round given their experience, etc...

Marc (Malden, MA)

Why aren't the Bruins playing the Habs in the Winter Classic?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:54 PM)

Because NBC wants to U.S. based teams.

Steve (CT)

What's up with Thomas Vanek? Do you see him picking up the pace after a slow start?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:54 PM)

He's a streaky player who tends to score in bunches. Don't give up on him yet

Ryan (NJ)

Pierre, At the current time in the season, who is your pick to win the cup?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:55 PM)

San Jose or Chicago

MARK (DELAWARE)

How deep is the next draft class? I feel the 2009 class has really come in right away and have helped the respective teams. What are some names I should know?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:56 PM)

Pretty deep. Tyler Seguin and Taylor Hall are the top two rated names. Both are in the Ontario HOckey League.

tony c. (glendale az.)

I want to send out congrats to Shane Doan for his 1000th game tonight, do you think he is an underrated forward because he is "hidden" here in phoenix?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:58 PM)

Great player and an even better person. He's well-known in Canada because of his international hockey experience so No, he's not ''hidden." He scored the winning goal in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, a pretty famous goal in Canada

Bill (Pasadena, CA)

Kings have three forwards out(Smyth, Simmonds, Stoll) what moves do the kings make to make sure this run that they are on doesn't come to a complete stop?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:59 PM)

Bill, I know he Kings have been calling around to other teams but I think you've seen just how many trades have happened this season thanks to the cap.... The later you go in the season the easier it is to make a move because the cheaper the cap hit it becomes...

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:59 PM)

Bill, I know he Kings have been calling around to other teams but I think you've seen just how many trades have happened this season thanks to the cap.... The later you go in the season the easier it is to make a move because the cheaper the cap hit it becomes...

eric (baltimore)

SJ or Chi. Keep sleeping on the Caps Pierre! With Nylander's money finally gone look out come the deadline

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:02 PM)

Love the Caps, Eric, as you should know from all the blogs I write on them. But they're going to need to learn to play playoff hockey which they didn't show last spring. I covvered all 7 games vs. the Rangers _ they were lucky to survive. Run-and-gun hockey does not work int the post-season

Matt (Detroit)

What about Steve Yzerman's 01-02 season/playoffs as a 30 and 30 episode? He single handily one them the vancouver series on one leg

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:04 PM)

Yep, that would be a great one as well. I remember Yzerman telling me earlier this season for the HHOF piece I wrote on him that his knee was so painful before Game 3 vs. the Canucks in the opening round that he secretly hoped Scotty Bowman would scratch him... instead he played through it and willed the Wings past an 0-2 deficit vs. the Canucks... The guy's a legend

Evan (New Jersey)

Devils are the best team in the NHL even though no one wants to admit it, i am so sick of hearing about the pens and caps the cup runs through jersey this year!!!!!!!!!

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:05 PM)

Could be !

Sean (Seattle,WA)

What do you think about the goal-tending situation in Chicago? I honestly think that the competition has been great and Niemi is making the most of his starts, but Huet is still the number one. Then there are the rumors of trading Huet (obviously to free up that cap space for the big signings) and making Niemi the number one. I am still not completely sold on Niemi. Although he has been solid, he still lacks the experience of being a number one goaltender. I feel like he goes down into the butterfly more often/quicker than Huet, but he has the quickness to bounce back up faster. His glove hand, while not great, is also better than Huet's. I feel like Huet will be the number one goalie leading up to the playoffs barring some drastic play changes that warrant a shuffle. They have both been playing well, it can only help the Hawks. Thoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:08 PM)

First of all, can't imagine why there are any trade rumors involving Huet. He makes $5.625 million a season. Good luck moving that contract.Huet remains number one but Niemi has been awesome and I would think coach Q would have no problem going to Niemi if Huet falters even slightly come playoff time. Good situation to have.

Sam (Ithaca, NY)

It is great to see Jordan Staal finally getting recognition for what he brings to the Penguins. Can you beleive he is only 21!? Do you see his development continuing and what do you see as his upside?

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:09 PM)

I think he's a got a serious shot at Team Canada. That would be about as good a recognition as you can get !

Peter Koutroumpis (Raleigh)

Pierre - what do you think about the correlation to how today's superstars like Crosby and Oveckin have just as many points as they do penalty minutes? It seems like we have a return to "old-time hockey" with top players being just as tough as they are good. I think this has some connection with the type of players that today's top coaches were in their day. Your thoughts??BTW - I love the Hot Stove segments on HNIC b/w you, Ron, Mike and Mike's target for the night - depending on who it is, particularly if he is player agent or Al Strachan :)

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:10 PM)

Not sure there's really any connection there but I do love how both of those superstars play... Thanks for watching Hot Stove !

drew (sf)

pierre, what did you think of bruce Boudreau take on Koci? Said he doesn't have enough hockey talent to play in the AHL. 1 goal in 6 years is pretty pathetic.

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:12 PM)

well when you consider Donald Brashear played for Bruce for a few years, you have to take the comment with a grain of salt. He's had his tough guys as well.

Pat (Michigan)

Who will win the Central division, Detroit or Chicago, and why?

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:13 PM)

Hawks will win baby, deepest team in the NHL ! Their time is now because next summer it's time to shed bodies !

Matt (Switzerland)

Hey pierre, You asked me for the starting goaltender, it's Hiller, he played better and gerber is injured. Maybe we can get another win at the olympics against canada. What do you think about the ducks and sharks game tonight??

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:14 PM)

Yeah Hiller for sure... I think San Jose is hungry to end the slide tonight and the Ducks played last night... Spoke ith Germany's Thomas Greiss today.. good kid... he'll likely be starter for Germans in Vancouver

tony c. (glendale az.)

I am thrilled about the coyotes so far, but I asked Barry and now I will ask you,do you think the yotes can hang in the playoff chase without adding some kind of offensive help?

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:15 PM)

Goals are tough to come by. Maybe they can get something in return for MUeller... But given the attendance woes, not sure how much payroll they can really add right now...

drew (San Fran)

should lesser players be suspended longer than better players because of the amount of time played per game...a la starting pitchers in baseball?

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:16 PM)

no

Marc (Malden, MA)

Most underrated player in the NHL is Patrice Bergeron. He leads the Bruins in scoring (though part of that is because Savard missed a month). He's top 5 in the league in faceoffs. He's the Bruins best overall (all 3 zones) forward. He plays against the other team's top line every game.

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:16 PM)

And Steve Yzerman has noticed :)

Rob (VA)

The only problem I have with the 2 points for a win, 0 for a loss is that there is no point of even having a point system then. Might as well and just make it a W-L system and then hockey will have the same standings as any other professional sport. Isn't that one of the things that makes hockey so great, it goes by a completely different system than all the other sports.

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:18 PM)

That's why my suggestiong of three points for a 60-minute win makes more sense.

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:19 PM)

That's why my suggestiong of three points for a 60-minute win makes more sense.

Adam (Chicago)

3 points for a win, 1 point for ending regulation tied, no shootout. Seems way more fair, doesn't it?

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:24 PM)

yes, that's why I wrote it ! LOL

drew (sf)

Pierre, that was really cool having 2 questions answered in one chat considering I have never had one answered before. Thanks. and I think donald brashear might say he is a little more talented as a player than Koci, esp in his prime.

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:27 PM)

Ok kids, gotta run. Busy day here in the Bay Area. Got a Mike Ricci blog to finnish and post !Come back tonight on CoverIt Live and spend a few minutes with us.Cheers
