Chat with Bill Williamson

frankie (san francisco)

With san diego resting LT and maybe sproiles, who gets the carries..Hester or tolbert??

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

Hi Frnakie, I bet we'll see a lot of Tolbert. LT and Sproles may play some, but they'll get their rest. Tolbert will be fun to watch. He can ramble.

brian (la)

bill why doesnt everyone give nnamdi his credit and still call him the best cb in the game....we all know he is...revis is good no question but nnamdi is an alll pro n for some reason he doesnt gbet the credit revis does...maybe becouse hes a raider

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

I all I know is I think Nnamdi is the best ... because he is the best.

Caleb (Los Angeles)

Hey Bill, as much as I like Kyle Orton I think Denver needs to upgrade for the future if they really want to make noise in the playoffs. Do you see any chance that Jimmy Clausen falls to Denver's pick (the Bears) and if so do you think McDaniels will pull the trigger on drafting him?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

I don't think so at this point. I think the Broncos will stick with Orton while trying to development younger QBs taken later in the draft a la Brandstater.

Chris (TX)

Love the column Bill, thanks! Should the Colts lose this weekend and the Chargers win, who would you favor presuming that they meet in the AFC championship game? It would seem that the Colts would be going some let down and the Chargers would keep the swagger going? Chargers have had thieir number in the past.

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

Thanks, Chris .. I don't think this wekeend will play a role. Both teams will likely rest many of their starters. Besides, there is a big playoff game for each team before the title game ... To answer your big picture quesiton, I think the Chargers are the team to beat in the AFC. I really do.

IronMountain (Poway, Ca.)

Everyone knows that Vincent Jackson getting snubbed for the Pro Bowl was a joke, however I can't believe that Cromartie made the Pro Bowl as an alternate, and Quentin Jammer didn't. Jammer is a much more solid CB then Cromartie, and is the Chargers best defensive player. Why does Jammer keep getting out voted for flashy players who can't cover or play the run half as good as he can?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

You're right, Jammer is a better player than Cromartie. He doesn't get much credit outside of the organization.

Justin (San Diego)

Do you see LT retiring after this year? If not...do the Chargers bring him back?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

If the Chargers win it all, I wouldn't be shocked if LT retired. Yes, I do think this is his last season in San Diego, either way.

raider-bee (la)

bill will my raiders make the playoffs next decade?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

You're giving me a 10-year window, so I'll say ... Sure, why not.

Jay (California)

Since the Raiders don't have a 1st round draft pick in next year's draft is there any chance they draft Clausen or Bradford if they are still available when the Raiders are on the clock. I don't see Gradkowski as the long term answer.

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

The Raiders don't have a first-rounder in 2011 from the Seymour trade. They have their top pick in 2010. Oakland will likely pick in the 6-10 range. I think they can grab a QB of their choice if they want.

BRASO (Los angeles)

Should the colt be fined for making a mockery of the tie breaker senerios for the playoffs and the integrity of competition.

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

A fine would never happened, but they sure did a cause a mess didn't they?

Nick (Loveland)

Hey Bill, do you think the offensive players ever roll their eyes when a screen pass is called for the 20th time and don't put out as much effort as they did the first time it was called? I'm talking about the Broncos game plan that McDaniels (offensive mastermind) crafts every week

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

A tad tired of the predictability, Nick?

Justin (San Diego)

What is the consensus on Larry English's first season? The San Diego press is always talking him up, but I very rarely see him make any plays on the field.

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

I think he's a work in progress. He's coming around. Remember, this is a huge step from the competition he faced in college.

josef (oakland)

do you think the raiders will bring back grad?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

Yes, I think it's a good fit. I think he'll get a chance to compete.

Shawn (Toronto)

Do you think the Chiefs regret trading Tank Tyler? I'm wondering how much their terrible run defense (outside of last week) lately has been due to the fact that they never came up with a suitable backup to Ron Edwards after Tyler was dealt.

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

Yes and what about Bernard Pollard. A couple of bad moves there.

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

I think this is their best hope: 3) DEN win + NYJ loss or tie HOU win

Wayne (Topeka)

Bill, a lot of mock drafts have the Chiefs taking Tennessee free safety Eric Berry. If so, does Jarrad Page have the ability to play strong safety as Mike Brown is still ok but up there in age and his lack of speed has been exposed a few times this year.

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

I think Berry is special and most great teams in recent memory have had dominant safeties. So, I like it. Although, the need for a tackle is great as well.

Adam (LA)

If the Sproles is looking for Turner type money, and the Chargers don't meet his demands, would it make sense to draft an every down back and keep LT as more of the change of pace guy?

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Sproles is very dangerous as a returner. I think San Diego needs to keep him and find a new primary back.

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Sproles is very dangerous as a returner. I think San Diego needs to keep him and find a new primary back.

Ryan (San Diego)

Why do you say this is his last season? LT has been amazing for the Chargers running game inside the redzone and he gives them a reliable back that can make teams respect the run for play action. They restructured his deal and with no other back to carry the whole load, I think he has to be brought back.

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Just a hunch. He has been good in the red zone, but the overall running game has been lacking. No disrespect toward one of the great all-time RBs. I just think SD may look to move on. look, it nearly happened this year.

Alex (Oakland)

Hey Bill, do you see Al making any big free agent signings like he did 2 years ago. The Raiders need a OT, DT, MLB, and even a OG in my opinion. Do you see Al getting a Casey Hampton, Marcus McNeill, Jahri Evans or any other player the Raiders need?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

Sure, Al still wants to win very badly.

BRASO (LA)

Bill, I understand an organization should be able to do what it wants for the most part. But when a team makes a calculated decision not to win doesnt it harm the game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

The Colts' move didn't help the game that's for sure. What bugs me is the timing. If they wanted to rest guys, then pull them after a series. But to do it in the heat of the game was not cool, in my opinion.

jim (san diego)

is vincent jackson back next year

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

Yes, I think so.

Adam (LA)

If you had to pick one QB to start a franchise with today, who would it be?

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

Got to be Manning, doesn't it?

Paul (Davenport,IA)

With some of the teams that seemed like good picks a couple weeks ago suddenly having problems. Who i is your pick for AFC and NFC in the super bowl?

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

San Diego vs. Philly.

Rich (Sunny Arizona)

Will Haley get fired and will the Chiefs go after someone like Cowher

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

I think Haley stays. if he doesn't, Cowher likely wouldn't be interested because Pioli is there and Cowher would want to run his own show.

Joe (Indio Ca)

should the cheifs go after some of the "big" name FA?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

They didn't do it last year and the team wasn't very good. They need talent.

Henson (Lousville)

How will the upcoming draft play out for the Chargers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

OL, DL, RB.

Chris (VA)

Hey bill, what do you think the chargers chances of picking up Cody from bama in the draft? if not him who do you see them picking up?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

I don't think he will be available when SD picks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

I don't think he will be available when SD picks.

DonPerryON (balt)

if the ravens see the chargers in the playoffs do you think they will repeat the first match-up

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

I think the Chargers are beter than they were in Week 2. It would be a tough matchup, but I think SD would control that game.

BRASO (LA)

How much better off is Denver without Shanny at this point in the season. And are all free agents this year restricted?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

I love Shanahan as a coach, but his message got stale there ... No, there will be some unrestricted free agents.

Dennis (NJ)

Do you think the raiders resign Kirk Morrison ? And what do you think they will do with Richard Seymour?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

I think Oakland will try to keep Captain Kirk .. As for Seymour, don't they have to keep him. Oakland gave up that No. 1 pick in 2011. Oakland can't let Seymour go.

Alex (Oakland)

Who should the Raiders draft and who will they end up drafting because of Al or some other reason?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

The Raiders need to find an OT at some point, don't they?

Sergio (San Diego)

Do you believe it will be the Colts or Chargers in the Super Bowl.?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

I really think San Diego will beat the Colts in the AFC championship game.

Steve (Fort Wayne)

Was firing Chan Gailey a mistake?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

I know it's hard to say no, becuase the Chiefs offense has been so inconsistent. But Haley and Gailey were a bad fit. The real mistake was Haley keeping Gailey in the first place. Another OC should have been hired last January.

Ryan (NJ)

BW, Have you heard about the guy Mike Iupati from Idaho? guys a beast and Denver could use him at G, what do you think?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

I watched him in the bowl game yesterday and he was awesome. Way fun to watch. That cat could help anyone.

Keith (Springfield, MO)

Dumervil, Marshall, and Scheffler are the most important players that are restricted free agents. Assuming there is no new labor agreement, which of these players do the Broncos retain and what is the reimbursement for Denver if other teams sign them?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

The thing about restricted free agency is that teams have the right to match. So movement won't be that easy.

Shawn (Toronto)

Will Andy Studebaker get a chance to start next year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

I think he might. He is a playmaker.

Donald (Denver)

Even Tho Our Broncos Likely wont make the playoffs, Despite there late season collapse, do u think this still was a good year for them?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

Having a 6-0 start and not making the playoffs is a bad thing. It would be hard to put a cherry on top of that.

Kam (Los Angeles)

Do you think that John Elway is overrated?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

Overrated? ... No.

Wayne (Denver)

How much better can the broncs be next season under mcdaniels since they had a semi-successful 1st season under him.

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

I think he is building a decent program. Depsite the nosedive, he seems to have the overall program in the right direction. But not making the playoffs after that great start would not be good.

Jim (Raider Town)

Richard Seymour, Kirk Morrison, Thomas Howard, Sebastian Janikowski. They are all free agents this off season, are any leaving or are all coming back?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

I think they'll be back. Al loves keeping his own guys.

Dennis (NJ)

Do you see the Raiders trading Michael Bush for draft picks or another player?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

There has bene rumors for so long, maybe it will eventually happen. I think Oakland should keep him and give him an oportunity to be the guy. He is a producer.

Jeremy (Oakland, Ca)

Do you think Cable is fired after the season? Do you see any chance Chuckie comes back or will Al just give Fassel his wish and let him coach the team or do you see any other candidates?

Bill Williamson
  (3:02 PM)

I think it could happen, espcially fi Oakland losses that 11th game. Here's some names to consider: Denny Green, Jim Haslett, Jam Fassel, Kevin Gilbride, Marc Trestman and maybe even Brian Billick and Mike Leach if Cable gets the gate.

Bill Williamson
  (3:03 PM)

Great hour, everyone. Happy New Year. Enjoy Week 17,
