Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks from snowy Bristol. I am chatting with you live from the mothership. Flew up this morning to meet with the ESPN.com folks and will head to the studio later to co-host the season premiere of Friday Night Fights at 10 pm ET on ESPN2, so tune in. The big notebook is up and there's plenty to discuss, including Pacquiao-Mayweather. So let's get to it, our first chat of 2010.

arod (NYC)

DTM, if they agreed to terms and fought in Manilla would you fly out there?

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

On if it was at least business class with some heavy drugs.

Steven (Savannah, GA)

Oh NO!! Is Dan not showing up today!!! Please Dan show up!

Dan Rafael
  (3:43 PM)

I'm here, no worries. Just running a few minutes late.

jay (cali)

Who will Toney fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (3:43 PM)

There has been some talk of a Tarver fight or him taking a UFC bout. Check out today's notebook for some more details.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

I'm sure today's chat will be monopolized somewhat with the outrage and disappointment at the Pac vs PBF cancellation which is totally appropriate. My question is two part. What date is the absolute last day to make the March 13th fight? And do you think that the postponement, in the long run, allows the fight to generate bigger buzz and anticipation than if it jappened in March?

Dan Rafael
  (3:47 PM)

I still don't think the fight is 100 percent dead. Put it that way. IF (and a big if) they make the fight they probably have another day or so.

Aaron (Washington D.C.)

Dan, who, where, and when do you see Cotto fighting next? Thank you for taking my question.

Dan Rafael
  (3:50 PM)

I think Cotto likely will be back in June on the weekend of the Puerto Rican Day parade in New York. He could face maybe Kermit Cintron, maybe a rematch with Margarito is a long shot. Miguel is dealing with the death of his father last week and is coming off a very tough fight with Pacquiao. I think it's possible he may take even more time off and not come back in June.

Patrick (Cincinnati, Ohio)

How much will this all hurt Floyd's legacy? Who does he fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (3:53 PM)

Until Mayweather fights Pacquiao or a real welterweight there will always be questions about his greaatness. That is the truth. Who he fights next? NO idea.

Tony1 (Michigan)

This little spat between Pac-man and Mayweather is why people would rather watch MMA, more fighting and less "mediation"!

Dan Rafael
  (3:54 PM)

This whole episode has been disgusting. Both sides are at fault.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Happy new Year, Dan!! Great notebook; chock full. How much do you think the likely death of the Pacq Floyd fight will hurt the sport? I feel like a lot of the progress I have made getting my buddies into the sport is being squelched.

Dan Rafael
  (3:55 PM)

If it is truly dead it is devastating and really casts a pall over 2010. To me, as I have said on the air, it is a nuclear bomb on boxing.

Joe (Tampa Bay)

Pac vs Clottey good fight or no?

Dan Rafael
  (3:58 PM)

I guess it's decent but who the hell wants to see that? I don't. Pacman just crushed Cotto who beat Clottey. Giant wc (who cares).

Dan Rafael
  (3:58 PM)

I guess it's decent but who the hell wants to see that? I don't. Pacman just crushed Cotto who beat Clottey. Giant wc (who cares).

Eric P (Saratoga Springs, NY)

for what it's worth - I don't think Mayweather was/is out of line. If anything, this hurts Pacquiao's image more

Dan Rafael
  (4:00 PM)

On one hand, Mayweather asked for stuff way beyond the rules of the Nevada commission for the first time in his career. On the other hand, he compromised and was willing to do a 14-day testing window. I think that was reasonable of Mayweather especially after Manny had agreed to some testing up.

Tom (Ohio)

Good riddance to this fight. As a fan, I'm sick and tired of hearing about it. People have real life problems, and we've gotta hear these guys whine back and forth about a drug test coming between them and $80 million combined? Please.

Dan Rafael
  (4:01 PM)

I totally agree with you for the most part. Personally, I am sick to death of it because I have been living it every single day and writing it every single day for like three weeks. It has seriously impacted my own life. That's not cool.

Koolkc107 (Deland)

I cant see Duran or Leonard or Hearns letting such a big fight go because they are scared of needles. I get the feeling that any of those 3 would have taken the tests, then rubbed Floyd's nose in it if they emerged victorious afterwards . . .

Ray (Cali)

Dan, if you were the mediator for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, what would be your solution to the drug testing issue?

Dan Rafael
  (4:01 PM)

Floyd wanted 0 window. Manny wanted 30. I would say meet in the middle and fight.

Mike (Brooklyn)

Any chance of Zab-Pac happening if the big fight doesn't occur?

Dan Rafael
  (4:02 PM)

No, that is not under discussion at all. I'll tell you one think -- Pacquiao knocks Judah out, which Mayweather couldn't do.

Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)

Danaconda, how petty would it be if the entire mediation collapsed because Mayweather refused to apologize? This is just a mess.

Dan Rafael
  (4:03 PM)

That was not why it collapsed.

Jeff (Alabama)

"Floyd wanted 0 window. Manny wanted 30. I would say meet in the middle and fight." - DTM ..........Hell just froze, DTM agreed with PBF!

Dan Rafael
  (4:05 PM)

All you idiots who think I am a Mayweather hater obviously don't read what I write. I give him his props all the time and when I agree with him I say so.

Jeff (Vegas)

Breaking news - David Haye and Floyd agree to fight... well, they agree to talk a lot of smack and then back out of the fight eventually

Dan Rafael
  (4:05 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Koolkc107 (Deland)

Damn skippy Dan, Meet in the middle. My respect for you is coming back!

Dan Rafael
  (4:05 PM)

Respect me or don't. I don't actually care.

Derek (Edmonton, Alberta)

The Pac camps vehement opposition to the mutual WADA testing will forever raise suspicions.....

Dan Rafael
  (4:06 PM)

Hard to disagree.

Aaron (Hartford)

Any chance Mayweather fights Malignaggi in March ?

Dan Rafael
  (4:07 PM)

Anything is possible. Richard Schaefer told me this morning that the MGM has confimed with him that they still want to do a Floyd fight there on March 13.

E ((Omaha))

D$$ - Scale of 1-10, with 10 being volcanic. How mad is Arum??

Dan Rafael
  (4:09 PM)

I don't think he's "mad." I don't think he really gives a crap.

Dave (NJ)

Are you confident that Floyd would take the fight if Pac agreed to a 14 day window... and if so can everyone quit calling PBF a chicken?

Dan Rafael
  (4:09 PM)

He said he would so I will take him at his word.

Brian (NY)

And let's not forget what a kick in the balls this is to Vegas, whose tourism income has been hurting since the recession. Lotta people would've come for the fight.

Brandon ((Texas))

Do you know whether Pacquiao, personally, is aware of the 14 day compromise? The LA Times reported claims that he may not have been informed.

Dan Rafael
  (4:11 PM)

That is something Richard said to me today. I am not sure Manny knows exactly what is going on and may be being misled possibly. It's a hard situation with him being 8,000 miles away.

Ross (Indianapolis)

Speaking of David Haye, good piece on him in the notebook. I love his whole "whether they hate me or love me, it means they're watching me" attitude

Dan Rafael
  (4:11 PM)

He means it too I think. I know I give Haye a hard time a lot but to just sit and talk with him he's a pretty cool guy.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Wouldn't Arum be really serious about Pac/Forman since they're both Top Rank fighters and it would be the next fight that would make him the most amount of money? 8th title in 8 divisions

Dan Rafael
  (4:13 PM)

Arum wanted that fight but Roach and the Pacquiao camp turned it down after watching tapes of Foreman. They believe Yuri's height and added weight could be a problem or that even if Manny won, it's impossible to look good against a guy like that. Yuri was a good sport about it, electing to take his name in the conversation as a great compliment.

zippy (houston, tx)

will you be at the mosley vs berto fight, and do you think that match up has the potential to be an early fight of the year candidate?

Dan Rafael
  (4:14 PM)

Yes, I will be there. I love the fight. Should be a good action fight.

Lou (Detroit)

I?m sorry, but I just don?t see the Mayweather-Pacquiao cancellation as the end of the world. I would be just as content to see Mayweather face Mosley and Pacquaio face Clottey and the winners meet up sometime at a later date.

Dan Rafael
  (4:15 PM)

You should be banned for such a poor take.

steve (Knoxville tn )

How ugly is a mayweather-malinagi fight? UGGGHHH

Dan Rafael
  (4:15 PM)

I'd rather come over and do your laundry than watch that crap.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly)

Bob Arum messed this fight up, like he did with the rematch to De La Hoya - Trinidad. He has to much ego and is bad for boxing. Agreed?

Dan Rafael
  (4:15 PM)

Bob sure didn't help matters put it that way.

Kevin (Greensboro)

Dan, much thanks for the lengthy and detailed Notebook this week. I found more information on your page than on five other boxing websites combined. I just hope the brass at ESPN appreciates all your efforts.

Dan Rafael
  (4:16 PM)

Well I just had a good sitdown meeting with the editors I deal with here and I know they do.

Josh (Miami)

Floyd was just playing his usual games. Even if Pacquiao agreed to all Floyd's drug testing demands, then Floyd would have just come up with something else. I think Pac and his team realized that. Personally I thought Mayweather-Pacquiao had the potential to be a major style clash anyways.

Josh (Falls Church, VA)

If you come over and do my laundry, I'll even pay to order that crappy fight and I'll buy the pizza.

Dan Rafael
  (4:17 PM)

Well I only live about 20 minutes from Falls Church, so it might be doable.

Greenberg (NYC)

Is Timothy Bradley now in the Pac-May mix?

Dan Rafael
  (4:20 PM)

Would be a decent fight I think. Not sure it would happen. Too much risk for no reward for Manny. Bradley is totally unknown for the most part. At least Clottey fought Cotto and Margarito. Also, and this is big, Clottey is with Top Rank and Bradley isn't.

Mike (NJ)

Dan, will you be in Uganda in Feb? I hope so

Dan Rafael
  (4:20 PM)

I'd rather watch Mayweather-Malignaggi.

John Ruiz (LA)

Mayweather-Maliniaggi would be a boring fight. I would not want to see that one.

JERALD (LINCOLN,NEBRASKA)

BOB ARUM IS THE ONE TO BLAME

Chris D. (Chicago)

I haven't been this mad at boxing since Roy Jones was fight part-time police officers on HBO. But I do respect the brilliance on Arum's part in getting Pacquiao to file the defamation suit... it sounds like Golden Boy's going to be the big loser if the fight doesn't come off.

Dan Rafael
  (4:22 PM)

Hard to argue.

Jake (Alaska)

I would pay 59.95 to watch you do steve's laundry, what would the undercard look like,

Dan Rafael
  (4:23 PM)

Maybe Steve's wife making coffee in one undercard. Perhaps my cat Popo sleeping on the couch in the other?

Gabriel (Los angeles)

Hey Dan do you think if pacman was in the states during the talks would it have made a difference?

Dan Rafael
  (4:23 PM)

I do.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Will Manny vacate his 140lb title ?

Dan Rafael
  (4:24 PM)

Ummm, he already has.

Peter (Los Angeles)

Which one's worse, Pacquiao fans or Mayweather fans? Please tell me!

Dan Rafael
  (4:24 PM)

They are both extraordinarily annoying these days.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Would you rather do Steve's laundry or watch the DVD "The Best of John Ruiz" ?

Dan Rafael
  (4:25 PM)

Laundry.

Scott (NYC)

Dan,Do you get weirded out by all of the creepy comments from some of the freaks. Guys paying to watch you do laundry. Ah, sounds kind of creepy to me.

Dan Rafael
  (4:26 PM)

You should see some of the borderline police-needed stuff I don't post.

jay (portland)

So if floyd's team offered the 14 day test BEFORE the mediation and knew pac's team wanted 24 days, why weren't they able to meet in the middle of the 14 and 24 day marks?

Dan Rafael
  (4:27 PM)

According to the Mayweather side, the did in fact offer 14 days before the mediation.

Jay (NJ)

Dan Rafael - (4:01 PM) "Floyd wanted 0 window. Manny wanted 30. I would say meet in the middle and fight." dan, ur right. it's common sense. u mean in 2010 someone can't text manny that msg and make him understand 14-days is a fair compromise? it makes no sense that he'll agree to 24d, but not 14d.

Dan Rafael
  (4:27 PM)

I agree.

Bing (Philly)

Why do people do laundry anyways? You're just going to wear the clothes again

Dan Rafael
  (4:28 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, Bing the idiot is back!

Greenberg (NYC)

I noticed that Pacquiao's head has gotten bigger (literally) the past few years a la Barry Bonds. What's your take?

Dan Rafael
  (4:28 PM)

I've never looked that closely at his melon.

John (San Fran)

How involved is Michael Koncz as to what Pacquiao hears? That could be the real wrinkle in Pacquiao not knowing all of the facts.

Dan Rafael
  (4:29 PM)

He is the guy with him all the time.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

the only reason why PAC vs. PBF is not going to get done is - inflated EGOS on both sides!

Chris (Boise)

How many Ricky Hattons would you say are out there right now?

Dan Rafael
  (4:30 PM)

Just one, but a really big one.

John (NJ)

Dan...the notebook info seemed to hint that Taylor may be persuaded by $ to not fight Ward, and perhaps retire. Does that look likely?

Dan Rafael
  (4:30 PM)

Possible.

Tony (Spring Lake,NC)

I'm bout to look at Pacman melon

Dan Rafael
  (4:32 PM)

Have at it son.

Chris (PA)

Danno, will PBF-Pacman dominate the FNF talk tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (4:32 PM)

I have not seen our rundown yet but I would imagine so.

Texas State Pen (Texas)

Hey!, he's not........oh nevermind...he's still here......

mike (baltimore)

speaking of FNF, u give miranda a chance tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (4:34 PM)

He can bang, so sure. And Karmazin isn't what he used to be.

John (San Fran)

Speaking of sons, when does the Julio return?

Dan Rafael
  (4:34 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. There is talk he could face Alfredo Angulo on HBO this spring.

Allen Iverson (Philadelphia PA)

We talkin' bout blood testin'?

psycho (LaLaLand)

is dionisio in any relation to edison?

Dan Rafael
  (4:35 PM)

No, they are not related. Apparently, Miranda is like Smith in Colombia.

Greg (Armonk, NY)

Do you really think Mayweather is afraid of losing is 0? After Castillo and Corales, Mayweather hasn't fought a top fighter in their prime at their natural weight.

Dan Rafael
  (4:37 PM)

I do think Floyd is unnaturally obsessed with 0 and does not realize that it means nothing if he does not fight the best fighters. Does anyone care that SRR or Ali have losses? NO. They were great because they beat the best even if they did lose here and there.

Randy (Las Vegas)

Mr. Rafael, in case you have not being informed, Miguel Cotto Sr., passed away this past Sunday 12/3. Please join us with your prayers in this difficult moment. -A loyal reader...and boxing lover. Randy

Dan Rafael
  (4:38 PM)

Yes, I did hear about that and it was a sad thing to hear. I did not Mr. Cotto well but had met him several times at his son's fights and he seemed like quite a gentleman.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Floyd's 0 is about is meaningful as Chavez Jr's.

Dan Rafael
  (4:40 PM)

That's not fair. Mayweather does have a lot of good wins. Just hasn't fought the best since coming to welter in 2005.

NC (Cali)

Dan, be honest. Are you excited for FNF tonight? Why is it worth watching?

Dan Rafael
  (4:40 PM)

Sure. I have a blast in the studio. And the main event tonight should be very solid.

Tony (Milwaukee)

Danimal, what about Mayweather vs Paul Williams - seems like the most logical fight choice now ? Awesome boxing wishes article also, Love the wish of bankruptcy for the major sanctioning bodies !WAR - Old HBO theme Music

Dan Rafael
  (4:41 PM)

Mayweather would never fight Williams. WAY to much danger to that 0.

Taylor (NC)

Is Gegard Mousasi the 205 lb strikeforce champion in mma still scheduled to fight on fnf tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (4:42 PM)

No. As of the newest bout sheet I got yesterday, he is off.

Katie (St. Petersburg, FL)

Nice article about Haye. A bit random though...

Dan Rafael
  (4:43 PM)

It was a bit of a slow week, what do ya want? Be lucky I decided to give you a notebook this week at all.

JP (Montreal, QC)

Hey Dan, what's up for Lucian Bute right now ? Read on your notebook he's still not considered for the super six...

Dan Rafael
  (4:43 PM)

For the 10 millionth time: LUCIAN BUTE IS NOT IN THE SUPER SIX. HE WAS NOT ASKED INTO THE SUPER SIX. AND HE ISN'T GOING TO BE IN THE SUPER SIX? Are we clear? He will fight on HBO in the spring.

Rick (Nashville)

Loved your prospects of the year. Is Daniel Jacobs signed with Golden Boy yet? Why do they keep getting him great fights if he is not "their fighter" yet?

Dan Rafael
  (4:44 PM)

As far as I know, he is indeed their fighter.

Don (Buffalo)

Dan - it seems as though Bob Arum steers pacquiao to fighters in his stable, as opposed to more compelling match ups. Hearing Pac / Clottey or Pac / Foreman is really dis respectful to the fans

Dan Rafael
  (4:45 PM)

You are right and the best weapon we all have is to boycott that crap.

Alan (PA)

Looks like Arum is now telling people the agreement for the Pac-Clottey fight has been made. I guess that just about puts the nail in the coffin.

Dan Rafael
  (4:47 PM)

The agreement is NOT made because Clottey hasn't even talked money with Top Rank yet.

Jeff (Bradley Beach, NJ)

Would like to see Jacobs vs. Sergio Mora. I think the snake rattles him.

Dan Rafael
  (4:47 PM)

Interesting future match.

Dan Rafael
  (4:49 PM)

I think I love Bing.

Joey Z. (Brownsville, TX)

Would you take $40,000,000.00 for 1 loss on your record?

Dan Rafael
  (4:50 PM)

Dude I would take 40 for that kind of dough.

Snookie (Seaside Heights, NJ)

Who has the best tan in boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (4:50 PM)

These are my readers.

Tony (Toronto)

Appernetly, Pacquiao - Clottey is to be in Cowboy stadium. lmao. Whats your take on that?

Dan Rafael
  (4:50 PM)

That is possible, which I wrote. It would be configured for about 40,000.

Esdras (Killeen TX)

This crap reminds me of DLH vs Trinidad 2 something that never happend but this is way worse

Dan Rafael
  (4:52 PM)

At least they fought at least once.

Tony (Milwaukee aka Da Brew City)

Danimal, whats next for Kelly Pavlik ? Sturm, Martinez or Paul Williams ?

Dan Rafael
  (4:54 PM)

They're talking about Sergio Martinez. Sturm I think also possible. I'd rather see Martinez if there is no Williams fight.

Matthew (New York)

This is almost as bad as when Andre the Giant died before meeting the Undertaker!

Eric (Irving, TX)

DTM, I say a curse on both their houses if this fight doesn't get done. Completely destroys all of the momentum that boxing had gained the last 2+ years.

Dan Rafael
  (4:55 PM)

I agree 10000000000000000%.

Mark (Minneapolis)

What up with Nate Campbell?

Dan Rafael
  (4:56 PM)

He recently signed with Golden Boy but does not yet have a fight scheduled.

Gutterdandy (Brooklyn)

What a depressing start to the new decade.

Ross (Indianapolis)

I like the idea of a sort of "play-in" fight for the Super Six in the event someone drops out. Any early predictions for the Bika-Green fight?

Dan Rafael
  (4:57 PM)

I like the idea also. I would favor Green but it should be an exciting fight.

Billy (Patchogue, NY)

Is there any dialogue between the two camps right now? Or should I just stop holding out hope?

Dan Rafael
  (4:58 PM)

As far as I know they are not talking to each other but I think they are both talking to HBO.

Dan Rafael
  (4:58 PM)

Bat Phone. Hold up.

Dan Rafael
  (5:01 PM)

OK, Freaks, we have breaking news.

Dan Rafael
  (5:02 PM)

That was Vinny Scolpino, Josh Clottey's manager. He told me he and Bob talked money in the last hour or two and they have agreed on their end of the fight. He said Clottey was ecstatic and will be returning to the US from Ghana on Monday. Nothing signed yet, not official but their side is in.

Jon (Los Angeles)

unfortunately, that is breaking news nobody wanted to hear

My Heart (HoBroken, NJ)

Dan, thank you for ruining my weekend with your "breaking news".

Dan Rafael
  (5:09 PM)

I hear ya. Vinny even said he thought Pac-May would have been a tremendous fight. He wanted to see it. But I can't blame him for being excited for his guy getting the ooportunity.

Kris Krepps (GR)

Is this Clottey fight going to be a PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (5:09 PM)

Of course. Manny fights on PPV now all the time.

Dan (Texas)

Any news on what the undercard might be for the Pacquiao-Clottey fight?

Dan Rafael
  (5:11 PM)

Can we let them get the fight actually done? Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Someday this would be a interesting 30 for 30 ESPN special the "the fight of the century that wasn't

Luis (PR)

This is horrible!!! Damn Pac and PBF, I hope they're sentenced to an eternity watching Ruiz-Valuev continuously.

tim (St. lou)

I'm happy for Clottey-I think he was robbed against Cotto, but we should boycott this

Dan Rafael
  (5:15 PM)

More breaking news Freaks.

Dan Rafael
  (5:15 PM)

Another sign Pac-Clottey is for real: I heard from a PPV industry source that Top Rank has officially offered the fight out the PPV nets, which means this is real.

Jay (Nashville, TN)

Did he mention a catchweight for the Clottey fight?

Dan Rafael
  (5:17 PM)

147 welter fight for Manny's title is what I was told.

Mike (Texas)

Freaks, don't support this crappy fight. No one should buy anymore pay-per views from floyd or manny. If know one shows up or watches we will show them who is boss. THE BOXING REVOLUTION STARTS NOW!!!

Nick (L.A.)

You think Mayweather will still fight on May 13th at MGM? Also, SI is reporting that Dallas is a done deal...any truth?

Dan Rafael
  (5:19 PM)

Dallas is by no means a "done" deal. But it is a serious and likely possibility.

Mitch (Oakland, CA)

Time for an angry mob.

Nick (Chicago)

DTM, any chance people are prank calling the batphone with phony Clottey news?

Dan Rafael
  (5:20 PM)

None.

Joe (San Jose)

Im so mad right now grrrrrrr. Pac vs Clottey? Booooooo

Mike (New Orleans, LA))

DTM, time for you to fulfill the prophecy and lead us into a Boxing Revolution!!

Dan Rafael
  (5:21 PM)

That's a little too religious sounding for me.

Kris Krepps (GR)

I just wiped my butt with my Pac-man shirt.

Bob (New Mexico)

HBO PPV shouldn't agree to any Pacquiao or Mayweather fights unless it's against each other.

Clottey (Ghana)

Even I don't agree with this fight, I agree with getting paid though.

Kelby (Omaha)

i fell like someone just punched me in the belly and stole my wallet.

Jon (Los Angeles)

where does this (non fight of Pac / PBF) rank on your most disappointing moments in boxing

Dan Rafael
  (5:23 PM)

Honestly, this is the most disappointing thing I have ever covered in boxing in terms of a fight crumbling. Easily No. 1 and I have been doing this for awhile.

Antonio Margarito (Los Angeles)

I never felt so cheated in my life...

Sergio (San Diego)

Dan, this is truly Black Friday, the Great Depression of 2010. Seeing the cup half full. Do you think the Mayweather-Pacquioa fight could be made for last quarter of 2010. It would give more time and promotion for the fight to be an extravaganza and probably more money for both fighters.

Dan Rafael
  (5:25 PM)

It's possible. But remember something -- they will still have this testing issue then. AND it's no guarantee Pacman beats Clottey.

Chris (Boise)

Boxing just can't get out of it's own way. This sport needs an enima. Any ideas?

tim (St. lou)

I hope Clottey beats the crap out of him

Victor Samora (Salt Lake City)

PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS A NIGHTMARE!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (5:27 PM)

Sorry bro.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, it's not signed yet, right? So we still have 24 hours or so, right?

Dan Rafael
  (5:28 PM)

Correct. Pac-Clottey is NOT signed.

Bear Grylls (Nature)

bob arum is like the mean grandpa you dread being around on holidays.

David (Old Bridge)

I can't help but think of your article after RJJ lost to Greene - the Pac PBF fight is the biggest it'll ever be RIGHT NOW - both coming off huge wins. If they each take another fight and plan to meet in the fall - who knows what happens in that next fight - very risky - DOPES ! !

Chris (DC)

At this point, should Mayweather just wait around to see the outcome of Sugar Shane-Berto and take on the winner?

Dan Rafael
  (5:33 PM)

I guess that's possible.

Dan Rafael
  (5:33 PM)

Bat Phone.

Dan Rafael
  (5:34 PM)

That was Richard Schaefer, who was reading along in the chat today when he read the stuff from Clottey's manager, etc... He is very disappointed in this. I know he worked really, really, really hard to make this fight. I asked him what now for Floyd? He said he's would talk to Floyd and Al Haymon and see what they want to do. I told him to keep the faith. If you're still reading Richard, keep the faith.

Kieran (Alexandria)

The worst thing about all this - it costs me good Fight Credential money. OK, that may be a slightly self-centered view of things.

Dan Rafael
  (5:35 PM)

I would suspect we would have a Fight Credential even if Manny was fighting you Big Man.

Michael (New Jersey)

Why does Floyd get to make up his own rules? Why can't the Nevada Boxing Commission tell him if you want to fight here, you have to use our drug testing rules?

Dan Rafael
  (5:36 PM)

That is a good point and one many have asked about.

Tom (Pittsburgh)

I used to love the bat phone..... now..... not so much

Dan Rafael
  (5:37 PM)

Same here. Maybe I should just turn it off?

Roman (CGY)

Is Mayweather the biggest big name "coward" fighter in history? I can't recall any other big time boxer who has ducked so many fighters. I'm no Pacman honk but it looks like Floyd is trying to get out of the fight.

Joe (Atlanta)

Mayweather will ask Shane for 2 gallons of blood every day

Alan (Bay Area)

Dan dont turn it off I love it for the good and bad

Jason (NYC)

I think you should rename it the Joker Phone.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Turn it off, have a good weekend without it. That's what I'm going to try to do now.

Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)

Seeing as Richard is reading and I'm sure someone from Top Rank is Dan can you pass a message on. A great promoter has vision this isn't just one fight this is a fight that has the ability to take boxing right back to where it used to be which means a lot beyond this one fight it can give a boost to all fights and events a great promoter has vision show that you have this.

John (San Fran)

Schaefer read your chats! Does he need any young employees? (214) 384-0216 is my number, I graduated from Northwestern, and will work my rear off.

Wil (SC)

The worst part is no Liev Schreiber.

Ivan Calderon (Puerto Rico)

Mayweather promotions wants to know if I'm available on March 13.

Zack (Pittsburgh)

If Floyd wants to drop the ducker label then he better fight the mosley/berto winner. Please richard help talk him into that fight!

Arod (NYC)

Maybe we can have Mayweather vs Baldomir 2 that would posses little risk for Floyd

Jay (DC)

It's amazing how many fans don't really care about the drug testing when it is for someone that the like, or he is facing someone that they hate.

Dan Rafael
  (5:40 PM)

I say let them both use whatever they want!!!!

Jeff (OH)

Richard please read this: YOUR fighter, Floyd Mayweather Jr, is thought of as a COWARD that ducks dangerous fighters. He will NEVER win a public relations battle as long as this stigma is attached to him. Just know that.

Shower Door (Las Vegas)

Don't turn off the Bat Phone! I have my next fight to announce.

Gutterdandy (NYC)

There is heavy duty irony at play if Floyd now chooses to fight Shane Mosley, who we KNOW used steroids in the past, at least.

JMM (Mexico)

Dan: "I say let them both use whatever they want!!!!"As long it's it's not my special cocktail!

Dan Rafael
  (5:42 PM)

An excellent point? Did you hear about how when Marquez gave his urine sample to the commission he spit in a cup?

john (los angeles)

Dan i dare you to post this.Dan those Marquez pee jokes were funny the first 100 times, its getting old.

Dan Rafael
  (5:44 PM)

Dude pee jokes NEVER get old.

Tim (Denver,Co)

I'm back DTM, been working grave yards. I had to wake up to come on and say as a 30 year boxing fan I will not buy anything Pac or May are selling. Feels bad saying that too. Oh well, Alvarado is out of his boot camp thingy. Any news on his next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (5:46 PM)

Alvarado will be on one of Top Rank's FSN shows in Feb. And welcome back to the chat you Freak!

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Floyd is taking a hard look at the winner of Jones=Bruseles, unless Jones wins.

Jason (Riverside,CA)

Hey Dan through all of this I just want to say thanks for your very hard work. I was here everyday to get updates and saw you with reports even on Xmas and New Years. Its a shame their selfish acts made much of your hard work for naught.

Dan Rafael
  (5:46 PM)

Goes with the territory.

Clint (DC)

Dan, the "let them use whatever they want" argument is ridiculous. PEDs pose a serious risk to the health of the fighters, and fighters who don't use them should not be forced into using them in order to compete. And they pose a serious health risk to the opponents of PED users given the nature of the sport. There's frustration about losing the fight, and then there is inane argument.

Dan Rafael
  (5:47 PM)

Clint, Clint, Clint my Freak Brother. It was a JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gil (Indianapolis)

Dan, can we at least have a Brian Kenny-Mayweather interview on the 13th? Hey, it's a start...

Arum (Las Vegas)

Hey, I liked your idea, Rafael. *puts down the middle finger*

Steve (NYC)

Anychance that Pac-Clottey winds up in Macau?

Dan Rafael
  (5:49 PM)

You never know with Bob. Maybe Yankee Stadium too.

Aaron (Strathcona MN)

Today has been a kick in the junk ... but we still have Showtime and the Super Six Tournament!

Dan Rafael
  (5:49 PM)

That's the spirit.

Fletch (Pittsburgh, Pa)

Why in the Blue Hell isn't HBO interested in Klitschko v Chambers?

Dan Rafael
  (5:51 PM)

I think it's more the date (March 20) than the fight itself.

Bing ((Philly))

Arum needs to be banished.

Dan Rafael
  (5:51 PM)

Smartest thing Bing has ever said.

Eddie (Texas)

Can we talk about a fight that IS going to happen? Is Edwin Valero going to burst on the scene with a savage KO on American TV, or will DeMarco's technical skill expose him?

Dan Rafael
  (5:52 PM)

Put it this way -- SOMEBODY is going to sleep in that fight. I lean to Valero by knockout.

brian (providence, ri)

Will we ever see Paul Williams at 147 again?

Dan Rafael
  (5:53 PM)

His promoter, Dan Goossen, continues to insist that is a real possibility for his next fight if they can line up a legit opponent.

Floyd Mayweather (Grand Rapids)

I got something really special to announce to all my fans. There will be a fight still on the 13th of March. Were currently in talks with Yori Boy Campas's people for a catchweight fight!

A2K (SATX)

Plus someone tell me why it took PBF 40 fights to realize that their might be a drug issue in sports?????

Dino (Wyoming)

Dan, who talks a better game, David Haye or Floyd Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (5:57 PM)

Haye.

andy (akron,oh)

Manyy vs JMM III / Mayweather vs Mosley!

Dan Rafael
  (5:58 PM)

Manny-JMM 3 is NOT going to happen. I think it may be awhile before we see anymore Top Rank-Golden Boy fights.

Will (Atlanta)

Didn't Floyd agree to pay $10 million for every pound over 147 that he weighed? It seems to me that for once Floyd might not be the bad guy. He seems to be doing most of the compromising.

Dan Rafael
  (5:59 PM)

Why because he agreed to play by the rules and make 147? Remember he blew off the weight in his last fight. Manny has never been proven using PEDs.

Ray-Ray (Monterey, CA)

The best knockout so far this year is the one Klitscko has goin' on right now with Hayden Panetierre...

Dan Rafael
  (6:00 PM)

Amen.

Dave (Cincinnati)

Did Clottey ask for additional blood testing from Manny? Didn't think so. Funny how no other fighter on the planet is going to ask Manny for blood...

Dan Rafael
  (6:01 PM)

No.

Rob (Los Angeles)

How soon can we expect to hear about Khan vs. Maidana?

Dan Rafael
  (6:05 PM)

There's a purse bid later this month. We'll see what happens.

Gil (NYC)

No other fighter on the planet makes Manny as much money as Floyd

Dan Rafael
  (6:05 PM)

And vice versa.

BiggaMike (Austin, Texas)

I bet kids hated to play duck duck goose with Floyd in elementary school

Lewis (NDakota)

Brian Kenny doing Sportscenter then straight to FNF. The man works hard for his money.

Dan Rafael
  (6:06 PM)

Well he'll have dinner with me in between.

Will (Atlanta)

I'd like to see Victor Ortiz fight the winner of Khan/Maidana if it happens. Hopefully he'll remember to bring his heart.

Dan Rafael
  (6:06 PM)

Would be a lot of fun, either fight for Ortiz.

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

I would've loved to see the fight, and I'm disappointed too, but you know what, I'll live. FNF is back tonight, I'm psyched for Mosley/Berto, and Holyfield goes for a return to heavyweight glory next month.....wait.........eh, I'll still get over it.

BiggaMike (Austin, Texas)

Any chance Khan will ever fight Manny

Dan Rafael
  (6:08 PM)

Certainly not while Freddie is training both of them.

Dan Rafael
  (6:09 PM)

Ok, Freaks, I gotta go get ready for FNF tonight. I hope you all tune in. Live boxing is back! And thanks for the chat today. Been a crazy couple of weeks with this Pacman-Mayweather stuff. I still hope it gets made. But whatever. Enjoy the notebook and talk to you next week. Peace.
