Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Good afternoon folks. Welcome. Thanks for coming.

Derek (Jax)

Whos your bet on the MVP?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

There is little to no doubt it's going to be Peyton Manning. Little suspense to any of the big awards anymore.

Randall (Houston)

Hey Paul, any chance the Titans have plans to pursue Josh Cribbs? We could use a true punt returner to get Britt back to WR

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Britt hasn't left receiver. He was returning kicks in addition. They will target a return man or maybe bring in multiple options. Doubt they could get Cribbs.

Seth (Denver)

I was following the BCS on Twitter and was surprised to see they were using the Colts last two games, where they rested their players, as reason the playoff system is flawed and the BCS is better. Are you buying it? Because, even as a Colts fan, I think the BCS is BS.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

Let's see: Two Colts regular season games that were meaningless or an entire bowl season that's meaningless except for one game? I'll take A.

Joey Marchy (Urban Jacksonville)

What's up Paul! On ?Jaguars Monday? General Manager Gene Smith said he expects to receive a compensatory draft pick. Why do teams receive compensatory picks and what round might we expect to receive a pick in?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

Third round is earliest. They are based on losses in free agency. Who was the best guy they lost and how did he produce? You can get a pick back for him. They won't get anything as high as a third rounder.

Bill (Nashville)

Paul, When the official last day of the NFL 2009 season hits have you heard whether or not there will be some sort of grace period to let teams and agents adjust to which ever rules will apply for free agency or will they have to hit the ground running at Midnight?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

I would think hit the ground running. Everyone's been preparing a Plan A and a Plan B, it's just a matter of which they will use. There isn't going to be an agreement or a cap. Would be a huge surprise at this point.

Snowbird (Nashville)

PK, I heard you talking about me this morning on the radio! Look out your window now!! How bout those apples?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Wow. I spent five minutes scooping that and was able to craft a snowball to throw to Finley. He was impressed. I was not. Grown people watch your show, and you are a puppet!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

A note about draft questions: There is no possible way I can tell you what defensive end the Jaguars might like in the third round, etc. So when I don't answer, please don't take offense.

Chris (Memphis, TN)

Do you feel like Bud Adams still has the mental capacity to make decisions for the organization? He was pretty fortunate with the VY call this season, but I really think his notorious trend of stinginess in FA is related to the probability that he still thinks a Coke still costs 5 cents.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

He's got people advising him. This idea they sign no one gets annoying. Are you familiar with three guys who were Pro Bowlers last year: Ros, Finnegan and Stewart? All locked up early, aggressively and hardly for free.

Matt (IN)

Ok, I've been a pretty solid defender of Polian's decisions, but I just don't understand this thing with Stover and Vinny. They picked Stover as the guy, so why even leave Vinny on the roster?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

It's odd and they can still change course. But they still deactivate down to 45, so I guess they figure it doesn't mater if AV is one of the inactives if they are at full strength with numbers sufficient to practice.

Bill (Nashville)

Hey Paul, I have a theory that if the year is uncapped several teams will use this to rid themselves of overpriced/underperforming players so the "dead money" vanishes and they can wipe the slate for the future...thougts??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

There isn't going to be a cap reintroduced if it goes away. That's the consensus feeling. So you won't need to get anything off the books because it won't help you in future years because the cap won't be an issue.

Clay (Nashville)

Bigger Fall, Jags 2007 to 2008 or Titans 2008 to 2009

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Titans, I think.

Katelyn (Syracuse, NY)

The commissioner is upset with teams like the Colts for resting guys late in the season because it hurts the integrity of the game and competition. Everyone seems at a loss on how he could enforce people playing their best players. I'm thinking, couldn't home field and by weeks be decided by who has the best record over the last four games? Any tie breaker could then be decided by best overall record.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

That's become popular thinking. I hate it. The season is the season. That concept is too contrived for me. Is it so big an issue we need to create some kind of seaaon within the season?

Jeff F (Nashville)

Paul, you really didn't expect for me to answer your lame question on "If I did a bad job coaching", did you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

At the very least you had to face them. No skating allowed. You did well, admitted some mistakes, a rarity.

Mike (Akron)

Breaking news: Mangini is staying!!!! Wait...should I be happy about this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Depends. Were you happy about Holmgren?

TT (Atlanta, GA)

You mentioned the Titans moving on without Keith Bulluck and David Thorton - obviously Bulluck's contract is up and he probably won't be resigned, but Thorton has another year on his contract. Wouldn't the best plan be to draft a LB in the 3rd of 4th round to develop for a year behind Thorton, then have them take over in 2011 when Thorton's contract's up? I see the Titans spending their 1st rounder on a DE or CB, which are big areas of need, rather than LB. The best LB they can hope for is going to be a project pick in the 3rd round or so.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Thornton is breaking down and I don't think they think he can hold up for any significant stretch.

LenDale White (Nashville)

What a great season for CJ...as fun as it was though, I'm tired of not getting the love anymore. Is Ringer my replacement, and who will want me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

If you get a tender that's worth a second rounder, I'm not sure who wants you. Someone will surface, I think. I'd like you in Houston with Slaton, but suspect they will go bigger in the draft or free agency.

Nanook (Murfreesboro)

Steekers fan here. We need a short yardage back. Do you think LenDale White is going to be out of our price range?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

He's got some Bettis-like qualities in that he's big but has good feet. I could see him there. He's not going to be real expensive. How would he go over with fans as a towel stomper?

Jeff (NC)

Do you think it would be likely the Texans go DL/DB in Round 1 and OL in Round 2?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

I'd take FS, RB, DT, CB in whatever order they like based on what's best available. Address one or two in free agency and make it easier.

Ed Hochuli (Eric Dickerson's House)

Paul, Why are people giving me a hard time on that holding call I called on Johnson on Sunday? He got 2000 yards what is he complainng about?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

You know. You know.

Marc (City of Brotherly Love)

The best Jersey shore is? And will the Eagles be one and done?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I'm an Avon guy, one north of Belmar. One of my five favorite places in the world so far.

Cory (Orem, UT)

I think the colts will benefit greatly from not playing the Chargers until a potential Championship game. I think they need at least part of their first game to get going again. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

Agreed. And divisional round sets up very well for them.

Sean Lawton (Arlington, VA)

Another day, another "Jags to LA" rumor. You are close to the team. Any real news here? As far as I can tell, nothing has changed that would have Wayne retract his oft-repeated "Team is not for sale" mantra. On a related note, is there some optimism on better tickets sales next year? At the very least, it's a more attractive home slate of opponents.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Unless he's outright lying, nothing new. Same people saying they are going to try to buy. Also in the news: I would like to buy a BMW. AT least the BMW dealer is willing to sell. Still just as unlikely to happen.

JT (Nashville)

It seems like Chuck Cecil has been a bit of a hot head lately... How do you think Fisher will handle this... and what are the players thinking about him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Fisher: "Chuck, don't get any more penalties."Cecil:: "OK."

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Handled.

McLean (Orlando)

Do you think CJ2k had the best season ever by a running back?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

No, I think he had the fifth-best season.

Cory (Orem, UT)

Do you think the Colts took the foot off the peddle in an effort to keep division teams out of the playoffs? Division games are always tougher, and all the games between them the Jags and Texans were close.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Absolutely not. They didn't have that much control. Bengals beat the Jets, the Texans are in and what comes of such a plot by the Colts then?

Jim Irsay (Indianapolis)

PK, I just wanted to mention how courageous it is for you to chat despite the weather conditions.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Thanks Jim. Have time to sit down and chat Tuesday?

shepard (houston)

As of now, what are your predictions for the AFC South next season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

A busy offseason of free agency and drafting. I just posted about how bad my predictions in September were for 2009 and you want January predictions for 2010? Colts will be my pick to win it, barring something crazy.

Chris (Memphis)

Were Roos, Finnegan or Stewart signed through FA as was stated in my question? No, their biggest FA signing in the past 5 years seems to be Nate Washington. Your inability to thoroughly process questions is beginning to annoy me. Thanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

If you re-sign your own guys, then it isn't necessary to go replace them through free agency, is it? Thornton, Hope, Mawae and, yes, Harper, all made big contributions as outside free agent acquisitions, didn't they?

Harish (Fargo ND)

Paul,I have heard a rumor that peyton had players only meeting last week after the jets loss and barred management from that meeting. Can you shed some light on that? Is that true?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

As I am not a player and therefore wouldn't have been invited to such a meeting and the Colts players don't really share such things, I am afraid I cannot.

Darren (TN)

How aggressive will the Titans be in free agency this offseason

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Depends on how many of their own they keep.

bill hall (percy priest lake)

snowbird means more to this town than you ever will. what are your thoughts on vy running the wildcat next year

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Says more about the town than about me, but I am not trying to mean a lot to the town. I think you are trying to incite.

J.P. (Rockytop)

Two quickies Paul. Chances Tony Brown's chances to be in Nashville next year? Also does KC return to backup Vince and what do they think of Booty?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

I think Brown ranks among the priorities of the free agents to be. I think they'd like KC back, but cheaper. Booty was a body.

Matt (PA)

I love the Packers roster. Great young QB, terrific young playmakers on both sides of the ball. What do they need to do in the offseason to become an elite team.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

I don't follow them as closely as Kevin Seifert who can give you a better answer. But offensive line has to be a priority. I like them too.

David (Newfoundland - Canada)

With the decade ending we are all hearing people's pick for top team and top QB etc. I have a question (or maybe more of a point to make) about the Manning versus Brady debate. I don't mind people rating Brady over Manning (if their logic is sound). What I hate is the SB ring argument. Yeah Brady has three, but I think the Patriots had the better "team" (defense included) over that period. Also, where would the SB ring debate be had Vinateri missed a couple (or even one) of those clutch playoff kicks and Vanderjact had made that 45 yarder against the Steelers in 05? Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

But he didn't miss the kicks. What would have become of me if I got my dream job at the New York Times in 1996? I can daydream about it a lot, but what good does it do me? What happened, happened. Am I supposed to hold it AGAINST Brady that he had a good field goal kicker? I've come to think Manning is a better quarterback, but you can't downgrade Brady for being surrounded by better people or downgrade Manning for the opposite reason.

Seth (Denver)

The Colts would never say, but who do you think they want to play in the Divisional Round? I'm thinking the Jets, so they can play four full quarters this time and show them what would have happened had their GM and Coach not pulled them early.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

Honestly I don't think they worry about any of those three. But I think they'd prefer it not be Baltimore.

Frank Bush (Houston)

Do you think I did a good job?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

Not bad. I think you thank God for Bernard Pollard, though.

jason (atlanta)

people talk about sd like they dominate indy. the last 3 games were all close, manning had his worst game and still could have won if av makes that kick, in 07 if harrison doesnt fumble and keith doesnt let one bounce off his face in the endzone colts prob win in a blow out , in 08 if the run game gets 1yrd colts win. i also think its unfair that manning takes blame for the d failing last 2yrs in playoffs.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

I agree that SD has hardly dominated Colts. But see previous reply about the if-only debate. All those things you want to wash away happened.

Brandon (Live in Austin Visiting Denver)

I think "Batman and Robin" was the worst Batman movie ever and one of th worst movies of all time. What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Not good.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Metrodome and Ford Field are good because they are "outside," you are in the crowd. Baltimore's is very good, probably ranks with Tennessee.

Gil Samson (Urban Jacksonville)

Is the Jags picking 10th or 11th a good or bad thing?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

It's a good thing if they make a good pick.

Nate Washington (Nashville/Toledo Ohio)

I did get the most guarenteed money more then David Givens more then Hope and more then thornton so in effective i am the biggest free agent splash

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Fair.

McLean (Orlando)

You say fifth best....but look at the records and accomplishments this seasons. 3 runs of 85 yds or more, 2000 rush yds and 500 rec yds...2000 rushing yds....16 TD's, 11 straight 100 yd games...all that and only 5th best?? What gives?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Four guys outran you at a time when it was harder to do.

Andrew (Evansville)

In the wake of the Welker injury, is Caldwell more justified for sitting his starters? What are most people around the league now saying about Caldwell's decision?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

I don't think Welker's injury vindicates the Colts. It was a freak accident not involving contact. Could have happened at the next practice is he sat out that game. Also Patriots were still playing for their seeding.

Josh (SF)

How much better would the Texans have been with average replacements for their "Kris/Chris Browns"?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

A lot. A whole lot.

Larry (Washington, DC)

Hey PK. 2 part question. Will the Colts put Giguere on the playoff roster, seems much better than anyone else we've tried at returner? Also, are teams allowed to adjust their roster between playoff games like baseball does between rounds, or are they locked into whoever they choose to start the playoffs with?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

No such thing as a playoff roster. It's the same as the regular season. They have a 53-man roster. They have 45 active for the game. They can cut people and sign people who are available if and when they desire.

Chip (WV)

If the packers meet the cowboys in the 2nd round... who gets home field??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

They can't meet in the second round. If they both win, Dallas plays at Minnesota, Green Bay at New Orleans.

Deb P (Murfreesboro, TN)

On the question from Cory...do you think the Bengals tanked it against the Jets so that it ensured the Steelers didn't get in? They (Bengals) knew by the time of kickoff that if they lost, the Steelers did too.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

I don't think anybody loses in order to affect someone else getting in or not getting in. Ever.

Tom (LA)

If you did a non-QB draft of players in the league, what would your top 10 look like? Where would CJ go?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

Send this to my mailbag and it will magically turn into a post.

Josh (SF)

Paul, do you expect a new labor agreement? The Texans have a couple free agents that are either restricted or unrestricted based on that outcome.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

I do not. And I don't know anyone who does. Benefits Houston short term.

Phil (Atlanta)

The fans are dying to know...what do the CJ2K Rolex watches look like?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

We saw players for the last time Monday. Will be a while before we see them again.

Jason (Chicago)

Do the Titans need a backup more like VY so their offense doesnt change so much if the QB gets hurt. It seems like when KC plays half of the playbook goes out the window.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Beggars can't be choosers. VY's a pretty unique guy. Be hard to be in position to get a backup that mirrors him.

Ulises (San Antonio)

if the Jags to LA rumors are true, how does that affect the AFC South? Will the Jags remain in the same div, or will teams be shuffled around?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

They aren't true. If Jax eventually ended up in LA, I suspect the league would ultimately look for St., Louis to trade places with them. But realignment would not be urgent.

Terence (Nashille)

In honor of Chris, I wish you would write an aritle that expands on Vic Ketchman's thought on fan behavior.I got so tired of hearing Rod Hood trumpeted as The Man when Pro Football Focus had Harper as the #10 run stopping corner in the league.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Ketchman's thing today was great. I will keep that in mind. No broad view for anyone on anything anymore.

Chip (WV)

just saw that ur an afc south buff... pshhh... go packers...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Dear Chip, I don't recall seeking you out. This is the regular AFC South chat block. Would seem it's your mistake to be here if this isn't your cup of tea, no? Or should I leave? Regards, Paul

Kalvis (Indy)

Manning threw 6 picks in the last outing against SD. If that's not getting dominated, what is?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Was the final margin six points or three?

Ryan (Jamaica)

Do you see the Texans being able to sign Robinson to a long term deal?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

I don't think they should want to. I think they should get a guy who can cover AND tackle.

Kevin Ingram (Nashville)

What do you think of the impression I do of you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Sounds like Pitino.

Gil Samson (Urban Jacksonville)

Do MJD and Rashad Jennings split carries next season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Why in the world would they do that?

Josh (nashville)

Paul, with the reg season completed, what story will you remember for each of the 4 teams when you look back on 2009?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Good one:

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Houston's four-game losing streak in the division.Indy's refusal to chase 16-0.Jacksonville's rookie class and inability to finishTennessee's 0-6 and CJ2K.

Ryan (Jamaica)

I really like the articles. How is the fam?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Great, thank you.

Matt (IN)

In regards to Belichick's jab over the Reliant Stadium turf...I seem to recall Kelvin Hayden injuring his knee there on a play where he wasn't touched. Have you heard other complaints about this field?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

I have not. And I have heard compliments.

Bizarro Paul Kuharsky (NFL Analyst)

Top 5 quarterbacks in the NFL...Peyton, Brees, Brady, Rivers, Big Ben. Please confirm.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Confirmed. Send food.

Finley (Via Mobile)

I am not putting up with anymore snowballs. When are we going to LA?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

You're like a gold fish with this memory. We had a fun time out there.

Mike (I'm not sure...)

Welker's injury in no way validates Polian. Colts played starters for 3-4 series in Buffalo, Welker got hurt on the Pats first series with 0 contact, could just as easily been a practice injury.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Thank you.

Matt (PA)

The Chipmunks The Squeakquel was worse. Trust me.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Colin Cowherd said today he took his four-year old son. Was his first movie. And he kept saying, "Dad, why is it so dark in here?" Amusing. When I take Simon to these things, am I not allowed to snooze?

Finley (Via Mobile)

Jags to LA. Rams to AFC South. Finley to LA. Works for me what about you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

If Rams came to AFC South, we'd be adding St. Louis to the loop and losing Jacksonville. Not gaining LA.

David W (NYC)

Paul, how do you think that an All-Star team from the AFC South would fare against All-Star teams from other divisions? Sort of a thought-experiment really, but I'm interested in what you have to say.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Well without a lot of time to ponder, I'd say from a pass rushing, quarterbacking, running backing and receiving pespective, quite well.

Ulises (San Antonio)

Clarification please: What is the rule for teams denying other teams from talking to their staff for future possible considerations? How can one, OC Shanahan, just pick up and to another team while other teams can deny their staff from being considered(Titans)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

The Texans let Kyle go. The only time a team is obligated to allow an assistant under contract to speak with another team is when it's about a head coaching job. These requests get denied a lot. Your current team has to want to lose you or be cool about it (like Kubiak with Shanahan) for it to happen.

Simon Tanner (British Columbia)

With Fisher coming back there goes the trade to Cowboys option? Does the potential shut down in 2011 help Jeff stay another year or not?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

This Fisher trade to Dallas has never had any substance to it at all.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

Couple more folks, then I have to film "My Primary Complaint."

Finley (Via Mobile)

Actually, that makes sense. Add St. Louis, we can move there and then you can start rooting for a real baseball team instead of the Evil Empire!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

NEVER!

gary brackett (the 317)

paul, freeney and mathis are saying they wish they were playing in the rca dome next week. i like the decor in lucas oil myself. where do you prefer to watch the games? and which is louder?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

RCA definitely louder. Press box lower. But LOS is a better venue no doubt. Outside of the mice.

Seth (Denver)

I thought it was a bit hypocritical of Belichick to criticize Texans for bad turf when he all but admitted he made sure Pat's field was in bad condition when the Colts played their in numerous playoff games.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

Bingo.

Trevor (Denver)

people have been talking that the bengals might present the biggest threat to the colts defense on the ground (benson). do you think that it is something for the colts to worry about, or would you be more concerened with the passing game of the pats (sans welker)

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

If I am the Colts, I would rather play Cincy than New England.

The Boss (New Jersey)

Do you watch the "We Are The World" video nightly? I stole the show, didn't I?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

You really did. But no, haven't hear it since MJ died.

Charles (Detroit, MI)

Do you think Jim can turn the Lions around?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

In time.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:09 PM)

OK folks, thanks so much for the visit. Same time next week I expect. Enjoy the games!
