Hey ladies. Nice to be back after a week away. And good to be back from Las Vegas. Hope everyone enjoyed our coverage of UFC 108. Plenty to discuss, as always, so let's vent.
Hey Jon! I plan on attending UFC 111 and was wondering what other fights besides GSP vs HARDY and MIR vs Carwin were going to be on the card? Thanks
Looks like Jon Fitch-Thiago Alves will be on the card, along with several other big names. UFC appears to be stacking the deck for New Jersey and tickets will go fast.
How much do you think the tickets will end up costing for the TD Garden UFC Event?
I don't think prices will be outrageous, provided you get tix immediately when they go on sale. They get pricy when buying from a second-hand source.
Any word on when Kos is returning and who he is expected to fight?
Reports are it could be Paul Daley in May or June. Trying to confirm.
How much did you lose in vegas
Hahaha. I definitely finished in the red. Maybe a few hundred bucks. Made a late comeback.
Was Aoki's post-fight performance the most classless reaction to winning a fight you've ever seen and don't you think he'd be dominated by the likes of BJ Penn or your mancrush K-Flo?
It's right up there. Aoki has had other random episodes in the past, but I can't recall anything like this. I don't like Aoki against B.J. Penn or Kenny necessarily, but I think he would be a top 5-7 UFC lightweight if he made the move.
who is on mma live this week
Looking to get a WEC fighter as we preview WEC 46 upcoming Sunday night. In-studio, it'll just be me, Florian and McNeil I believe.
Do you think that Dos Santos' win catapults him over Nogueira in the heavyweight title picture considering that they are teammates?
If Nogueira beats Cain Velasquez, he would certainly be higher in the pecking order than Dos Santos. But that's a big if and I don't expect it to happen.
Any word on how lesnar is doing?
Should find out later this week. I'm optimistic he'll be able to resume his career. The questions is, at what level?
Jon is late! My life can't go on without! WHAH!
Late? I was in here before 1:00. Maybe you were a bit tardy.
who do you have winning this Sunday? I think Faber is on his way down in that division
Assuncao is a tremendous challenge. But Faber showed a true warrior spirit against MTB with both of his hands broken. I still think Faber is elite and will find a way to win. Also like Henderson to outlast Varner by decision.
What do you think of the WMMAA FOY award being named after Charles "mask" Lewis?
A nice gesture by the World MMA Awards. There were a lot of choked up people when that was announced. Even though I never had the privilege of meeting 'Mask', from everything I've heard, any honor MMA wants to bestow upon him is good with me.
Buy/sell: Pacman v. Floyd happens March 13?
Sell. But I do think it will happen at some point. Yahoo's Kevin Iole was suprisingly pessimistic about it when I ran into him in Vegas.
Is 'Suga' ready for a title shot after he beats B. A. Baracus?
If Rashad gets through Rampage, there is no doubt he will deserve a shot at the belt. I wonder how many people expect an Evans win vs. Jackson. I have some doubts after the Silva fight.
does UFC need to make 2 Heavyweight divisions? Just look at how big Mir Lesnar Carwin and Dos Santos are? Its puts guys like Kongo, Yvel, Velasquez and many others in a serious disadvantage.
I hear what you're saying, and there is no doubt size is a huge factor with heavyweights. But I don't think I would do it. I have been consistent in my belief that five divisions is plenty.
Jon, I expect Rampage to come back with a lot of doubters and this will lead to a very motivated Rampage which probably spells trouble for Rashad, your thoughts?
I agree that Rampage will be ultra-motivated, but so will Rashad. Just thrilled that Rashad beat Thiago Silva so we don't have to wait too long for that fight.
Will Kenny be fighting Gomi at UFC 111?
Not sure it'll get done that quickly, but I know Kenny will be ready to fight by March 27th.
I cracked Joe Silva's code for UFC109... it's a mini 185lbs tourney. I mean come on Nate Marquardt vs Chael Sonnen and Demian Maiaa vs Dan Miller. Those fights very well could determine the top rankings IMHO. Do you agree?
Certainly will be an important night in the middleweight division. I don't think Miller and Maia are near contention right now, but the Marquardt-Sonnen winner will be in a great spot.
Was it impossible to understand what The Axe Murder was saying when you interviewed him? I didn't understand much of what he said.
Hahaha. Wanderlei kept it short and sweet, so I was able to make it out. He's making strides. I remember the first time I interviewed Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez and couldn't understand either guy at all. Both have improved their English quite a bit.
After the loss to Evans, who is next for Thiago Silva?
I don't think his star diminishes too much with that loss. Many were impressed with his strong finish, and reports are he fought with a pretty significant back injury. I'd like to see him fight Forrest Griffin or Rich Franklin.
Let's say Okami had beaten Sonnen; would he be fighting Marquardt to put himself in a great spot?
Good question, Hobey. I doubt it. Okami just doesn't win with style points and has been penalized.
When's GSP moving up?
When we interviewed him at UFC 108, he basically said when he moves up to 185, it will be permanent. So that said, I don't expect it to happen until 2012 at the earliest.
Anthony Johnson vs Paul Daley, winner gets GSP-Hardy winner, what do you think?
Anthony Johnson is more than one win away from a title shot b/c he lost his last fight. Also, even though I'd love to see Daley against Rumble, it seems like he will get Koscheck next. Both guys coming off of wins, etc.
Alright, Anik, the chances of Hardy knocking off GSP are....
My sister wants to know when you're going a GSP-esque calendar?
I'm sure your sister is dying to know.
Are you as pumped as I am for Lawler-Manhoef? Thats guaranteed fireworks.
Not as pumped as you, Lance. But pumped.
Why is Kos considered a top contender when he was so clearly out of his league against Alves?
What have you done for me lately? Koscheck scored a lot of points in my book with his win over Rumble Johnson. And I think the loss to Paulo Thiago is only gonna look better and better when Thiago beats Mike Swick. I like Koscheck a lot, and think another fight with Thiago Alves would be more competitive than the first one.
Are you and Kenny gonna go on a double date with Gareth Davies and Paul Daley?
Do you think Kenny has to fight at 111 in order to have enough time off for Boston's event, or is he fighting there no matter what, even if that means fighting at 114 and 115 consecutively?
So many depending factors in there. Kenny wants to fight every three months, but if he was healthy enough to fight twice in two months, he might consider it. As long as he's at least 70 percent healthy, he will find a way onto that Boston card. Can't miss it. He's had his entrance song picked out for years!
what fight on tap are you looking forward to the most?
I'm excited to see the Fitch-Alves rematch at UFC 111. Also Mir-Carwin. And call me crazy, but I'm very interested to see what Dan Hardy can get done against GSP.
Predictions for Fight Night 20 on Monday?
Ran into Gray Maynard at UFC 108. He is supremely focused on Diaz and not looking past him whatsoever. I think this might be the night that Maynard doubles his fanbase with a TKO, just like Lyoto Machida did against Thiago Silva at UFC 94. Also will take Escudero and Sadollah.
Any thoughts on the UFC/Dana going to war with the "streamers" of UFC events? Has been getting a lot of attention lately
Good for the UFC. I watched Lorenzo Fertitta's testimony on C-SPAN a few weeks back. Piracy is a huge issue and the UFC has every right to take aggressive action.
why does mir talk so highly of carwin but badmouths lesnar? lesnar is a better version of carwin, is he mad that lesnar beat him?
Lesnar and Mir have always had a sort of combative relationship. Obviously, Lesnar's post-fight antics at UFC 100 didn't sit well with Team Mir. But I was with them both at TUF training center prior to UFC 91 (Mir was part of our ESPN coverage) and they were far more respectful towards one another back then. The animosity certainly fuels interest for a trilogy fight.
If Dana goes to war against the internet, don't you think he needs to take a look at PPV prices/ticket prices etc. It is expensive to be a UFC fan, especially if you don't have a group of friends to share the cost of events.
Absolutely, Jon. It is increasingly expensive to be a UFC fan. My cable bill is no different than yours. And I don't have any friends. All of that said, as long as the PPV buys keep streaming in, I don't expect any price reduction.
A Diaz brother losing by TKO? You must be crazy Jon. Grey by another boring UD.
I respect your opinion, but it's too easy to predict a Maynard decision.
So does k-flo keep it classic with "dirty water" or is he gonna come in papelbon style to dropkick murphys?
TBD. Can't reveal.
What's your favorite MMA site?
Other than espn.com/mma?
Tons of good ones out there. Too many to name. I'm sure I use many of the same ones you do. Sherdog's Fight Finder is the greatest resource in the world.
What did you think of Dana's rant on your boy Rossen?
I've been so tunnel-focused on UFC 108. Have only heard about it. Will have an opinion on that for you next week. Or try me in a few days at firstname.lastname@example.org or on Twitter (Jon_Anik).
What is your take on Lights Out wanting to blob in to MMA?
I've been waiting for a high-profile boxer to finally take the plunge into MMA/UFC. Bring it on. I think Toney's lights will go out.
What are your thoughts on Semtex being over, but still being awarded the KO of the night, unlike Rumble who didn't win the award when he was over
I think the difference was that Rumble missed weight by 4-5 pounds, whereas Daley only missed by a pound. We talked about that on Post-Fight Extra a little bit.
Everyone always talks about UFC finding easy wins for Kimbo. Do you think it would be smarter for the UFC to use Kimbo to build up a young guy like Duffee, Bader, or Bones Jones. They would all squash him and a win over him would do wonders for their marketability.
There is no way Kimbo Slice will face one of the elite guys you mentioned. I understand the value in the exposure for Bader, Jones, etc. But they don't want Kimbo getting his hand knocked off. I mean Slice vs. Duffee. He might as well write his will before the fight.
It's a given that Kenny comes out to Sweet Caroline in Boston.
Nope. A lot of different choices, but that song isn't in the top three. I understand why it would be a decent option. But ain't happening.
The Fedor RVCA shirt is sweet. A nice xmas present, but the Vitor Belfort joint is better!
Yeah, I'm really liking the RVCA gear. I got a Tokyo Five t-shirt for Xmas. Mint.
Is Rashad buying lunch next time he's in Bristol?
Hahaha. With that 375K pay day, he had better be.
When will Roy Nelson be fighting?
He doesn't know and neither do I. Perhaps in April on the Abu Dhabi card. Maybe on the UFC's first Versus card in March. Remains to be seen.
If the UFC hypes up Rashad/Rampage enough, do you think it would have enough potential to outdo Lesnar/Mir as far as buy potential?
I doubt it. Rashad-Rampage will do a monster number and it will have tremendous promotional backing. But I don't think it could trump a card headlined by Brock and Frank.
Hey, if Quinton and Rashad do square off, you know what would be great? Having it in MEMPHIS!!
You'd like that, wouldn't you? I can guarantee you it won't happen in Memphis. No way the UFC would throw Rampage that bone after he bailed on them. I'd like to see it happen in Detroit or Chicago, Rashad's neck of the woods.
Why isn't a bigger deal being made about Silva standing there and letting Rashad recover. I didn't understand that at all. It had a chance to finish and decided to mock him instead.
Definitely didn't show a great killer instinct when Rashad appeared to be there for the taking.
Jonny Boy...long time! UFC 108 didnt disappoint. Who, in your opinion, did more for themselves at the event, JDS or Daley?
Hey Jeff! I think Paul Daley was by far the night's biggest winner. He's taking out two top 10 welterweights in brutal fashion. I also think Hazelett is and was far more of a contender than Gilbert Yvel. Not trying to take anything away from Junior Dos Santos, but 108 was all about Paul Daley for me.
What events does MMA Live plan on broadcasting from in the future? Newark is a short drive.
I expect that MMA Live will be there at UFC 111. Hopefully we do at least a half dozen remotes in 2010. We've done seven total since our first remote broadcast at UFC 91 (November 2008).
Are too many people forgetting about Ben Saunders @ 170? Alves, Kos, Daley, Fitch, Swick get all the pub, but that knee to Marcus Davis was absolutely brutal..
I like Ben Saunders. But he's just 1-1 over his last two. Gotta string together multiple wins to be mentioned in contender discussions.
Any idea who Herschel Walker will fight?
No I don't. Maybe Franklin McNeil.
Is Brandon Vera SF bound after he loses to Jon Jones?
Interesting scenario there. Without knowing Vera's contract situation, I still think he has plenty of value to the UFC, even with a loss to the highly-touted Jon Jones.
Do you think the UFC will do a 3 night preview special with Rashad and Rampage like they did with BJ and GSP?
Yes. That was already part of the deal, Crystal. And I wouldn't expect the UFC to change course now.
Have you ever mistakenly gotten on Mel Kiper's chat board?
We always go head-to-head Wednesdays at 1PM. But you won't catch me in Mel's chat room. I'm a huge Kiper fan. He's dynamic.
why isn't anyone talking about jim miller. I was surprised at his standup over ludwig
5-1 in six UFC fights and has only been with the promotion for over a year. Now it's time for another step up in competition. I know he lost to Maynard. Now, I'd like to see him face some of the other top guys---Edgar, Griffin, Florian, etc.
HEY JON! I WAS WONDERING I JUST TURNED 24 YRS OLD AND TRAINING FOR MMA IS IT TOO LATE FOR ME?(LOL) AND DO U THINK ANY BOXER CAN COME OVER TO MMA AND BE ANY GOOD
Never too late in MMA. A lot of fighters don't peak until their early 30s. As for boxers crossing over, it all depends on the level of commitment. Most estimate it would take a pro boxer 24 months of non-stop training in all disciplines of MMA to be remotely competitive.
Jim Miller vs. Tyson Griffin at UFC 111?
I thought the UFC would make a fight between Tyson Griffin and Kenny Florian. But it appears the Takanori Gomi signing will get in the way of that. Miller-Griffin is definitely a possibility.
if you were to fight Jon, what weight class would you be at?
Probably the question I get the most relating to my future MMA career. I would fight at 135. Weigh 161 today.
Which washed up CAN will King Mo fight next?
D) None of the above. Time for a bigger name. Let's also not forget that Mike Whitehead was on a roll when King Mo slowed it.
What happened to Tamdan McCrory?
He was cut by the UFC after the loss to John Howard. He'll resurface somewhere.
Are the Australian and Dubai cards being shown on Spike/Versus or PPV?
UFC should throw Gomi a softie to get his name out there with a nice KO win. throwing him into the deep end makes no sense.
There aren't a ton of softies in the UFC lightweight division. And, there is risk that he would lose against anyone. I don't like his chances against Kenny, but I'm not sure giving him a lesser name is the right move.
Isn't Corey Hill supposed to fight this month? Not sure I could watch him again after that leg thing...I'd be waiting for him to snap again. God! It hurts to remember.
Yeah, I'll just read about that one.
With the top 4 UFC hw contenders currently scheduled to fight, who do you think is next for Dos Santos? Do you think they would give him Duffee or maybe even Lesnar as his warmup fight before taking on the winner of Mir/Carwin?
The UFC isn't keen on eliminating contenders, so I'm not sure a fight with Todd Duffee will happen. That would be the fight I'd want to see. Maybe Big Country?
rashad is not an elite lhw....i think he needs to move down in weight and his wrestling is not as great as i thought it was
We asked him about a possible move down to 185. Because he's already been a 205 lbs. champion in the UFC, I just don't think it'll happen. I would also cut him some slack. The layoff was a factor, and I expect fighting more regularly will result in a much more fluid and confident Rashad.
any news on Lesnar?
...later this week.
Cheers' theme song for Kenny, everybody knows his name in Boston right?
Another good option, but not the song Kenny will go with.
Rashad was about as smooth as I've ever seen him, and more than enough for the top light heavies. Thiago Silva is just really hard to keep down.
I thought Evans' head movement was great. A little too much wasted shoulder activity for me, but he dominated the first two rounds. And you're right, Peter. Thiago Silva is a bad man.
Rashad was 205 champion less than a year ago. He lost to an undefeated fighter.
IF Brock gets a *tune-up* fight, would his title be on the line?
I don't think Brock will get a tune-up fight. I would think his title will be on the line, provided he isn't officially stripped of the belt.
What do you think happened to J lauzon? Was it because he wasn't 100 percent from his knee injury? I view him as one of the top guys in the lw divison
I don't share your opinion that Lauzon is a top lightweight, but I do like his toughness. Cardio certainly abandoned him on Saturday night and he took a ton of punishment. I think the layoff was a factor, but I don't consider Lauzon to be elite, even when 100% healthy.
Kenny turns his back on the Hub and comes out to Sinatra's New York -- it's brilliant!
No chance. The Jay-Z New York song is a perfect walkout song, provided you're from NY.
What do you think of Kimbo vs toney? It could be a good fight and would sell a ton of PPv's.
No argument here.
I really like watching Ross Pearson and Terry Etim fight, any news on when they will fight next?
2010 will be a huge year for both. Out international contributor Gareth A. Davies wouldn't shut up about Terry Etim.
How does Kenny feel about the prospect of fighting Gomi? Does the win get him closer to his third title shot?
Loves the chance to fight and beat a legend. You'd have to think a win over Gomi would get him right back in the title picture.
is the fight between Gegard Mousasi and King Mo bound to happen in 2010? who you got?
I do think it will happen, provided that King Mo commits to being a light heavyweight. If and when it happens, I would still back Mousasi.
Please sell me on UFC 109, it is a terrible card!Unless you are over 40 Years of age!
Not a great card.
Will MMA Live do a remote from Abu Dhabi?
I wish. Think that one would be fairly cost-prohibitive.
Jon - what were your New Years Resolutions?
Was too busy with MMA Live at UFC 108. It's usually to work out 5 days a week instead of 3.
Ben Hendersons manager said to call him if you guys want him on the show!
Sounds good. Thanks.
As an MMA Fan who is Pride-biased, I have a feeling Gomi's UFC run could be titled: Cro Cop 2: Lightweight.
A strong possibility. I just don't think the Gomi that is coming to the UFC is in his prime.
How bad was that decision to Shogun's career..Not only is he not the LHW Champ, but the last thing he needed as another extended layoff.
It's true, Cory. It's really amazing how much one's livelihood can be effected by a bad decision.
Buy or sell- Jon Jones and Gegard Mousasi are the two most likely young fighters right now to put together a hall of fame career.
I'll buy that, with honorable mention to Hector Lombard. Trust me on that one.
WOW all this Todd Duffe talk has got him back on my mind, dude is a str8 beast what do you think he needs to do to get on a Velasquez Dos Santos level?
Just needs more reps against top-level guys. We haven't seen enough of him.
is Duffee really considered a contender after he a 1 person that no one has heard of? who does he fight next and why havent we heard about his injury?
He came into the UFC with rave reviews and has done nothing to make you think he won't live up to the hype. A physical specimen who just needs more fights against top UFC heavyweights. His time will come.
Breaking news- Andre Dawson only baseball hall of famer
Wow. Roberto Alomar didn't make the cut?
is Lombard that good?
Absolutely. Hasn't lost since a 2006 decision to Gegard Mousasi. Powerful, compact package and is absolutely relentless. He breaks bones.
where do you rank Lyman Good? top 20?
I would say right around 20 would be accurate. He's undefeated, but it's hard to determine a ranking b/c he hasn't faced very many of the welterweight elites.
No way Florian gets another shot at Penn in the next 2 years.
You may be right. But if he keeps winning, he will get another title shot, even if it comes after Penn moves up to 170.
Yeah no Alomar 73.7 percent when 75 is needed. Pretty shocking.
Wow. Appreciate the update.
does hughes make the hall of fame in the next inductions hes more deserving than some people in there?
His time will come. Not certain if it'll happen before he retires, but he's a lock.
When does filming start for TUF 11?
Not sure Dustin. I believe the season debuts in April.
Akihiro Gono has a crazy resume with wins over Spider Silva, Lombard, Mousasi!
Yes he does. He's hit a skid lately, but notched some big name wins earlier in his career.
What next for Diego Sanchez?
Getting healthy. Maybe Nate Diaz.
Who is uglier Little Nog or Forrest??
do you think mir's weight gain is going to help him against Lesnar? i think he needs to practice takedown defense.
I think a bigger, stronger and potentially more explosive Mir is just about the only UFC heavyweight who can give Brock a run for the title.
Alright, folks. Gotta bounce. If I didn't get to your question hit me up on Twitter (Jon_Anik) or at email@example.com. Thanks again for supporting MMA Live's coverage of UFC 108. We'll see you all tomorrow at 3 ET for the weekly show. Until next week, enjoy WEC 46 and UFC Fight Night 20. Be well and drive safely. -JA
