Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks. Welcome to our weekly chat. The new big notebook is up, plenty of news stories from the week are also up and a new blog will posted shortly. We have plenty to discuss I'm sure with Pacquiao and Mayweather, the debut of the new Top Rank Live series tomorrow and we also have live boxing on FNF tonight. So let's get to it.

psycho (LaLaLand)

Bhop vs Jones: over/under 300,000 buys?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Under.

psycho (LaLaLand)

Hi Dan. I am a big BHop fan coz he always took d hardest opponents. But how can one justify d Jones fight? Its not even about money coz that fight lost all of its meaning courtesy of danny Green and i bet it will tank. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I think BHop sees it as a good payday, a win and most important, a way to even the score with Jones, who beat him in 1993.

Steve (NYC)

Will HBO be televising Klitschko- Chambers? ESPN?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Right now there is no US TV lined up for the fight. HBO does not plan to go with boxing on March 20. My understanding is that it is not against the fight in any way, but that the date does not work for the network.

Jason (Decatur, GA)

So, Ricky Hatton is coming back. Will he be fighting at junior welterweight or crusierweight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I thought heavyweight.

Alex (Louisville)

LOVED the scathing blog this week. You perfectly expressed how I feel about the whole deal. Please direct people to that when you are called a shill. Actually, you are a shill for us FREAKS.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Excactly. People are idiots if they think I shill for one company or the other. Read my body of work and take the emtoion of each individual piece out of it and you will see that my main thing is to be an advocate for the boxing fan in my opinion pieces.

Freddie Faull (London, UK)

Do you still think Hopkins will consider moving to heavyweight or cruiserweight if he beats Roy Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I would hope if he does beat Jones that they both retire.

Joe (San Jose)

Dan do you think Floyd-Pac will eventually happen? I believe the demand will always be there, provided they win their upcoming bouts

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I have no idea other than to say with everything that happened it will be an even more bitter and difficult deal to make in the future.

Nick (Fredericksburg, Va)

How much of a chance do you see Chambers having against Klitchko?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Slim. Verey slim.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

If Schaeffer's reading I just want to say thanks for putting together Jones/Hopkins instead of Pacquiao/Mayweather. And by 'thanks' I mean 'no thanks.'

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

LOL!

Eric (Irving, TX)

Good to see Taylor pulled himself from the Super Six. Hopefully the talk about coming back later is just that, talk. He had a pretty good run. Time to spend time with the family, not keep fighting and get punch drunk.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I agree. I respect Jermain for withdrawing but also for not saying he's retiring only to break his promise and come back. I felt like his comments were honest. I have no problem with him leaving the door open if he felt like he had to do that.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Whats the deal with DK and Cunningham? I thought Cunningham was with Main Events?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Don King won the purse bid for the fight between Cunningham and Godfrey.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

Please tell me HBO will not be showing BHop-Jones on HBO PPV

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

That decision has not been made. It is something under discussion. HBO isn't going to do anything until there is a resolution to if it will do the Pacquiao fight and who/when Mayweather fights.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

What do you think of the February 13 Top RAnk PPV? It looks like a pretty good card to me.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I agree. It's a solid Latin Fury/Pinoy Power card.

Nick (Fredericksburg, Va)

I believe the nonsense with Mayweather and the Pacman is all posturing..The fight will be made for late this year..Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

If you think it's just posturing you are dead wrong.

Rick (Marina)

Whats up Dan, So let me get this, even though the fight we all wanted isn't going down, Pacman atleast will fight someone with a chance of beating him and also challenging, unklike Floyd's list of potential opponents is a disgrace, Campbell and Paulie, is he serious, unbelievable.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Ding, ding, ding. Mayweather is a joke at this point with opponents. Call me a hater, I don't care. I am keeping it real, which is more than Mayweather does.

Ross (Indianapolis)

Good notebook today Dan. I am psyched for a potential Angulo-Julio, Adamek-Arreola double header. Sounds like one of the best BAD cards in a while!

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

If that card comes off as it is being planned, it's a terrific show.

Mark (NYC)

Would you consider instituting mandatory drug tests prior to all of your conversations with Gary Shaw?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Perhaps, but no blood 24 days before any conversation.

Taylor (NC)

Any kind of truth bout the e-mails teddy was talking about last week on FNF?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I have no idea because I have not seen them, and, according to Teddy, neither did he. Unless I actually saw the e-mails I would not report something like that.

JP (Columbus, OH)

Hey Dan, any word on if Berto got a hold of his family. Truly a tragic situation.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

It really is a sad situation. I have not heard of anything new since what I wrote the other day.

Brian (Slc, UT)

I agree with Paulie, Campbell for Floyd is horrible for his resume. But if he fights Cintron, do you give him a little bit more credit?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Cintron is at least a real welterweight, I'll give him that.

junior (Houston)

Dan you always have good sources is there any truth to Marquez vs Katsidis being made?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

That is a possible fight under discussion. It's Marquez's mandatory and both fighters are with Golden Boy. But nothing is done by any means.

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

So is it safe to say you place more blame on the Mayweather camp for the fight not taking place?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I blame both sides but Mayweather gets a little more blame.

Turk (DC)

Dan-o-mite! I was very excited to be reading about Alvarez possibly being on the Pac-Clottey card, would love to see Omar Henry on it as well. There seems to be a whole bunch of young talent right now that will keep the sport interesting when they mature, very exciting!

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Henry probably will be on that card, just not on the televised part.

Derek (Brooklyn)

Why the delay in Floyd announcing an opponent, do you think HBO is trying to talk him out of fighting on that date so they don't have to pick sides? why not just wait for Mosley/Berto, its not like he's running for Congress!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I think the Mayweather side is all messed up and is trying to figure out how to gracefully move off March 13. I do not believe we will see Mayweather fighting on that date.

Eric (Irving, TX)

Dear Richard, to expand on Khalil's thoughts, the freaks would like to remind you that you said if the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight didn't get done you were all idiots.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

No, that is what Richard Schaefer said.

Jay Leno (California)

What are the odds we can have Hopkins-Jones II held in a retirement home, and we lock the doors and throw away the key before the first bell rings?

Tomas (Texas)

is the Vic Darchinyan vs Raul Marinez fight just talk or is it official?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Right now it is talk but that is the fight being worked on for March 6.

Randy (Milwaukee)

Mayweather is not running for Congress, he's running from welterweights.

Ross (Indianapolis)

Is it sad that I'm more excited about Cowboys cheerleaders acting as round card girls than I am about either superstar fighting that day?

Alan (South Africa)

Help! I've been telling friends about the two best fighters in the world who were going to fight each other and get a possible 40 mill $ each. What do I tell them now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Since Pacquiao is fighting in Dallas, tell them it was all a bad dream, just like Pam Ewing's bad dream all those years ago.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Dan, I was so glad to hear you calling for a boycott of both May and Pac fights...it's funny bc just this weekend i told a friend of mine i refused to order either fight out of principle, and that i hate both camps for forcing that on me...and this is coming from a true freak...thanx dan, u have the hearts of the fans in mind always

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

You are not alone in your that thought. All you can do is show the promoters that you're not going to take and it hurt them in the pocketbook by not buying either fight.

Stringer B. (Baltimore)

Let's also not forget that if Floyd fights Campbell, he is not just again fighter another former junior welterweight and lightweight, but JR> LIGHTWEIGHT!

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

No offense to Nate, but it's a joke that he was even MENTIONED as a possible opponent for Floyd.

Jason (Las Vegas)

As bad as it is that Pacquiao-Mayweather isn't happening, even worse could be the fallout between Top Rank and Golden Boy. Do you think this will lead to the companies refusing to work with another again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Yup.

Koichi (NYC)

I love how Mayweather is willing to fight Nate Campbell after initially blasting Shane for having 5 losses. At least Shane is a legit welterweight and one of the better fighters of our era.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Mayweather says what he says when it helps him and then refuses to see the other side.

junior (Houston)

One more question do you think it's possible that Pac-Clottey come to Houston to do a press conference I would really like to get his autograph cheater or not

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

No, they have to press conference planned -- Dallas and New York next week.

Horn (Vegas)

Is it still possible that the sides can come to terms and pay Clottey step aside $?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

No.

Reno (Newark, DE)

Will there be a catchweight for the Clottey vs Pacquiao fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

No, it's 147.

Greg (Jersey)

Danimal....while we are disgusted that big fight isn't taking place, Clottey is a very tough opponent with an excellent chin. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Solid fight and a legit opponent, although it pales compared to Floyd.

Steve (Hartford)

How long is the contract with Top Rank and this new Fox Sports show?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

At least 36 shows through this year.

Joe (RI)

What about Floyd vs. Vic Darchinyan? Or is Darchinyan too big for Floyd?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Probably too good of a puncher.

Bert (Minneapolis)

John Ruiz signs w/ GBP? Does Oscar have insomnia or something?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

They already have one hugger in Hatton. I think GB is trying to corner the market.

Randy (NYC)

PBF vs Williams

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

In your dreams. Mayweather would never fight somebody that dangerous.

Jeff (OH)

Better welterweight resume: Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr? How ridiculous would that question have seemed 2 years ago, lol.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Actually, it's Manny as a welterweight. He has destroyed Oscar and Cotto, which are more impressive than anything Floyd has done at 147 pounds.

Nick (Fredericksburg, Va)

Will Cotto ever be the same after those two beatings?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Hard to see that being the case.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

FYI Freaks, the new blog is posted.http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4828800&name=rafael_dan

Dennis (Miami, FL )

Fine Top Rank and Pacman moved on.. But Golden Boy to have Mayweather fight on the same night?? Freaking nuts!! Golden Boy is acting like a baby in this matter.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

It's not Golden Boy. It's Mayweather.

Pedro (Puerto Rico)

Your thoughts on Juanma-Luevano next week? I like the idea of Juanma on the undercard in June, I think he still needs to build his base in NY and the fight with Gamboa needs to marinate a bit more

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I am psyched for the show and I will be in NYC to cover it next week, and then in Vegas the week after for Mosley-Berto.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

By the way Freaks, let's all wish Bernard Hopkins a happy 45th birthday today.

Nick (Fredericksburg, Va)

I give Cory Spinks's trainer a lot of guts for leaving such an unmotivated fighter...50 lbs over weight is insane !..Has he been talking to Hatton ?

Tom (Oh)

But Dan, wouldn't you at least say that Clottey was the best available welterweight on March 13th (except for PBF of course)? See that's the difference between Pac and PBF..

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I would say that.

kelby (omaha)

Dan, good job on dropping the Margo'cheato' line on FNF last week. Question: have you talked to Teddy Atlas more on his comments that Pacquiao's Team emailed Mayweather on PED consequences?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

No I haven't.

Ross (Indianapolis)

I'm pretty excited for the Top Rank Live shows starting up. What's your prediction for the Martirosyan - Ouma fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I am excited about the new series too as long as Top Rank doesn't screw it up like they did on Versus. I think Vanes-Ouma is an excellent main event. I like Vanes but it is dangerous.

Ricky Hatton (Manchester, UK)

So I guess Kevin Cunningham isn't a candidate to be my new trainer....

Mike (Gilbert)

Is Shawn porter headling FNF in Feb. I Like him. he hits solid and compact

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Yes, he is headling a show next month in Cleveland against Russell Jordan. I also like Porter's potential quite a bit.

ivan (orlando)

any word on when cotto is coming back and any opponent he may have in his sights?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I would encourage you to see today's blog, which answers that in depth.

Brain (Philly)

Love Child getting some Love in the notebook.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Tough, tough fight for him with Angulo. Frankly, I don't like it for him, but it is what it is. I am also a big Perro fan and I think it will be a terrific fight.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

Where will you be going for drinks after the Jan 23rd Top Rank card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Probably at the bar at the Affinia hotel across from MSG.

j-money (dallas,tx)

dan is the press conference next week open to the public? at cowboys stadium

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I do not know.

Brody (NY)

Don't know if you got my question. How bout Angulo for Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Not a legitimate fight.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

Who does Sergio Martinez have a better chance of facing next, Pavlik or Williams?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Martinez is being called about both fights.

Randy (NYC)

I was a bit disappointed in Teddy Atlas (for once) in his citing what is essentially unconfirmed gossip that really makes Pac look bad.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

There are a lot of Freaks who have written in today saying the same thing.

R! (Yay Area)

Great to see if El Canelo lands on the under card, any mention of who he's likely facing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Not yet. First things first and that is to get the deal done with Top Rank.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Alexander-Maidana happening?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

No, Alexander is facing Urango in a unification fight.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

If Mayweather fights Paulie or Nate (can't believe I typed that) and Cotto is going to fight Foreman where does that leave Kermit Cintron?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

SOL.

Steve (NYC)

what's the famous fight bar in Manhattan that everyone goes to after fights and where is it located? is it a good scene to check out after the fights next week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Jimmy's Corner, which is owned by famed cornerman Jimmy Glenn. It's at 140 W 44th in the theater district.

Aaron (MI)

Any updates on Pavliks next fight???

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Arum will be in NY next week and he told me will be discussing that matter with HBO. Martinez is possible for April. I also spoke to Pavlik's manager, Cameron Dunkin, this morning and he said also that Martinez was a very good possibility. That's a fight HBO would be interested in and one all the Freaks should also like.

j-money (dallas,tx)

DAN I THOUGHT SAUL ALVAREZ WAS SIGNING WITH GOLDEN BOY????????

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Obviously, not. No need to yell dude.

psycho (LaLaLand)

hey dan. mistake in the blog. it is listed that arum said they fight in JANUARY. Should be JUNE my man

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Looks like somebody (YOU) needs to learn how to read.

Texas Prison Warden (Texas)

Yes, James Kirkland, inmate #8562001 is still here.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Wouldn't it be best to put a Hispanic fighter or card on in Dallas? Pac-Clottey seems out of place there. I guess they can always put Chavez Jr on the card and sell 50,000 tix.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Ummmmmmmmmmmmm, that's why they plan to put Margacheato on the card and Saul Alvarez and maybe Jose Luis Castillo and Alfonso Gomez. THANKFULLY, Chavez won't be on because he flunked the post-fight urine test in Nevada after his last fight and will be on suspension.

jay (portland)

Dan if Pac and May do end up having both their fights on march 13th, which one are you going to watch. We all know that saying you are not going to watch either one is just you venting. so which one you gonna watch?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I will be in Dallas.

Nick (Fredericksburg, Va)

If Teddy were on Judge Judy, she would would've thrown him out with that e-mail nonsense...

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Hilarious.

Floyd "Run from the best" Mayweather (Las Vegas)

You people keep on I will be forced to fight Chavez Jr at a catch weight of 147

CM (Canada)

Off the top of your head, can you think of even one rematch in boxing history (at least between elite fighters) with a longer gap between the first and second fights than Hopkins-Jones II?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I have tried to think of one and I can't. 17 years is a lonnnnnnnnnnnng time between fights.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

It's ridiculous that we're considering Kermit Cintron as a step up in competition for Floyd...yea, best of all time? haha

Eddie (New Mex)

what are ticket sales for berto vs mosley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Call Ticketmaster you dope.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, have you seen or heard anything about Jose Benavidez? I'm guessing his fight tomorrow night is not televised.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Suppsed to have a TON of potential. Turns pro tomorrow night on the FSN show and his bout could make TV. Freddie Roach is his trainer and manager. Lots of people who follow the amateurs think the world of him. You know he's the real deal if the Nevada commission licensed him at age 17, when usually you can't get one until 18 unless you're THAT good.

CHARLIE (NUTLEY,NJ)

Dan will there a 24/7 in the Pac vs Clottey?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

We don't even know if HBO is handling the PPV yet, so settle down.

Anthony (Iowa)

How about Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz. At least it's a fighter with some knockout power. Paulie and Nate have no chance at knocking Floyd out.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Smoke crack much?

David (Nashville)

Dan, is this a ridiculous thought assuming Mayweather holds fast on the March 13th date: HBO PPV split site from MGM and Dallas showcasing co-feature and main event from each site ala Cotto and Pavlik?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

No chance at all. Not when the ppv has two promoters. How will they share the money? NO CHANCE. When Top Rank did it with Pavlik and Cotto, they had both fighters.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Nice comeback for Karmazin last week. So glad FNF is back, plus in HD. Grazie ESPN.

Greenberg (NYC)

Dan who you got...Leno or O'Brien?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

I think Leno via KO. Leno does have a big chin, but Conan couldn't hit it.

Jim (NY)

How much of the Pacquiao-Mayweather problem was Floyd himself as opposed to Floyd's Handlers?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Floyd himself.

Nick (Fredericksburg, va)

You said you thought Dwight Muhammad Qawi (Braxton) nickname - The Camden Buzzsaw was the best..I totally agree.. What a fighter too..!

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I loved seeing those highlights last week on FNF. By the way -- I will be appearing on FNF again tonight, but via Skype from the office in my house.

Adrian (NY, NY)

After denying us the biggest fight of the generation Paquiao is fighting a man who lost to the man he just destroyed and Maywether is probably going to fight another light weight. This is why boxing is terrible.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

It's hard to argue that point. That is why so many fans are so utterly disgusted and should be.

Randy (Milwaukee)

"Call Ticketmaster you dope." and "Smoke crack much?" are two beauties. You're hitting your stride Danimal.

Floyd (LV)

I sent Tedy that email

Mark (Norfolk)

How are you going to knock Mayweather for opponent choices when Paq is fighting Clottey who lost to Cotto, who Paq clobbered?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Because at least Clottey is a top 5 or so welter. Mayweather is considering smaller fighters -- AGAIN and AS USUAL. Come on.

chris (oklahoma city, ok)

Good coverage about the Berto/Haiti situation. That fight was a toss up to me before, but it's even more so now. He either loses because of the ordeal, or beats the screws off of Mosley and dedicates it to Haiti

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Exactly. The sad situation certainly injected more drama into the fight.

Bronk (Dillsburg, PA)

Now that you answered the question from the Floyd standpoint let me reverse it. How much of the Pacquiao-Mayweather problem was Pacquiao himself as opposed to Pacquiao's Handlers?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

A lot was from Pacquiao himself. I honestly believe had he been in the US while this was going on and closer to the situation it might have been resolved.

Tony (NYC)

Anybody good on the Lopez undercard at the Garden?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

John Duddy, Jorge Diaz, Pawel Wolak. It's a nice card.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Mark from Norfolk you're an idiot. Get a clue bozo.

Joe (RI)

Pacquiao's biggest mistake was jumping up and fighting guys at 147. If he stayed at 135 Floyd would be doing anything to fight him right now!

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

PAY THE MAN SHIRLEY!!! BRILLIANT! I MAY USE THAT IN A BLOG (with credit, of course).

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

From all the freaks, I would like to thank you for having to write daily articles and blogs about urine and blood for several months. It must have been torture.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

It was not fun, especially over xmas and New Years, when I had hoped to just chill for a few days.

jcs (Wpg, Canada)

Well said, Joe, I may use that in my everyday conversation (possibly without the credit)

Alan (South Africa)

Go Joe!!! Sums it up perfectly.

Keith H (Seattle)

Any truth to the rumor McDonalds is doing a 2 oz mini-burger called the Mayweather because Floyd never does anything full size?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Pay the man...

Jesse (Mpls)

HA! Well said JOE!

Matt (Berkeley)

how do green/bika match up with ward?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Very carefully.

chris (oklahoma city, ok)

Dan, someone on the comment section brought up an alternative to the blood testing issue and handwrap Margarito issue before being reinstated. Have a CIA/FBI agent conduct a lie detector test about PED's, Steroids, hand wraps etc... and do a blood test like 24 days out for pac and be done with it. Sound good? If it's good enough for the law, it's good enough for me

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Not a bad idea.

Alberto (baltimore)

Any fights worth mentioning on the Mosley undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Actually, it is an excellent undercard. Glen Johnson-Yusaf Mack, Matthysse-Harris, etc... Some good bouts. Check out the full lineup on my schedule.

Jr (San Jose)

I heard Hornswoggle received a call from Mayweather...

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

That is legendary.

Psycho (LaLaLand)

speaking of Hornwoggle, did you check out Mike Tyson on raw?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Yes, loved it. Good to see Mike back in the ring, but just having fun. That right hand that laid out Jericho missed by a mile!!!

jcs (Wpg, Canada)

It's a good undercard, but none of them are being televised, correct?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Correct. Only Mosley-Berto is on television in the US.

Greg (VA)

Lie detector tests (Polygraphs) arn't admissable in court, because they vary based on who gives /analyses them (subjective). So they arn't good enough for the law.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

It wasn't about the law. It was about public opinion.

Justin (Atl)

dude if malignaggi mayweather gets made it should be the opening episode of next years dancing with the stars.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

WHat a farce the IBF is. How does Randall Bailey get a title eliminator? Just sickening.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Re-read your first sentence.

Shon (Bellingham, Wa.)

Any idea who will replace JT in the tournament?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

The winner of Bika-Green, which is Feb. 5.

Ryan (Michigan)

As much as it sucks for berto. Any chance he drops out for family concerns and mosley fights mayweather instead in a few months?

Ian (Pembroke Pines)

Dan, I read Mayweather wants to fight Verne Troyer on March 13th.

Rick (Marina)

I think Yory Boy Campass got a call from Floyd.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

At least he's not smaller.

Eric (Sacramento, Ca)

Is this a boxing chat or auditions for americas funniest freaks?

Eric (Irving, TX)

Floyd's so delusional about reality it'd be hard to trust a lie detector test from him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

That is an excellent point.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

Verne Troyer versus Hornwoggle for an eliminator match for the right to face PBF....make it happen!

Bronk (Dillsburg, PA)

What happens if the winner of the Green-Bika fight gets a nasty cut and doesn't have enough time to heal. Then what?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Legit question. I think right now at Showtime there are serious discussions about moving the April 17 Ward fight back in case something like that happens, because it's not a lot of time from Feb. 5 to April 17.

Not a Hater (NY)

Why don't we just call this the Anti-Floyd chat? There's only haters in this crap.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

The truth is probably 95% of the comments are anti-Floyd and not anti-Pacquiao.

Big M (Atl, GA)

Dan, It was cool seeing you on the FNF opener (although I don't recall you doing your usual shout-out to the Freaks). The 30 year look back this season willbe cool. What else do you think they should do this season?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

I will have you know that I absolutely mentioned the Freaks. 100%.

David (Houston)

Dude that comment about pacman staying at 135 was the best thing i have heard in a long time!

Brian (RI)

Is there gonna be a in studio co host on FNF tonite or just you in your office?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

BJ Flores is in studio. I am in my house.

Joe (East Meadow, NY)

To not a hater - that's b/c at least PAc re-schedules w/ a legit top 5 welterweight (Clottey), and Floyd is looking to schedule w/ a washed up, 37 yr old lightweight (Campbell)

j-money (dallas,tx)

DAN there was prospect named luis yanez he is from what i hear really good, but i dont hear the media say anything about him. your thoughts? by the way he is from dallas

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

He was on the US Olympic team and hasn't fought much. He is also in a very small weight division and is not exciting to watch.

Alan (South Africa)

Brian Kenny would provide stiffer opposition than Flores' recent fights.

Brian (RI)

How many people will Bj Flores say he'll fight tonight and never fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Many I assume.

Grant (San Diego)

Will any of the Mosley-Berto undercard be on the international broacast?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Yes, for sure. Glen Johnson-Mack will be part of that. Maybe Harris and Sergio Mora as well.

Chris (Oklahoma City, Ok)

Dan, you're my only outlet for this question: Is Ruslan Provodnikov the guy that kinda looks/fights like Kostya Tsyzu that's been on FNF a couple times now? That guy is fun to watch, do you know if he has anything lined up in the near future?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Not sure what is up with him. He had been back in Russia and was supposed to return here to fight. I'll have to ask promoter Artie Pelullo about him. He was an exciting prospect.

Brian (RI)

Demitrius Andrade is on FNF tonight. Do you think he's a future champion?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Yes I think he has all the potential in the world to become a champion.

psycho (LaLaLand)

hey dan. what happenned to the ding a ling man??

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

He's actually got a fight on Jan. 29 in Glen Burnie, Md.

Hector (New York City)

Dan the Man!!!! This just in man Floyd has signed to fight Ivan Calderon!!!

Cristian (Jersey City)

Why does it seem that Pacquiao was given more credit for beating Hoya and Hatton than Mayweather was given?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Because Manny beat Oscar moving up in weight and Floyd struggled with him. And Floyd was a welter who fought Hatton when he was moving up. Pacquiao beat Hatton at 140, where he had never been beaten and he did it way easier than Floyd did at the heavier weight.

Joe (San Diego)

saying the NSAC is doing a "good" enough job is like saying MLB was doing the same in the early 90's. We push for stricter tests in other sports and praise congress for requiring the same, yet Mayweather gets hammered because he wants to ensure clean fighters in boxing. A high profile writer like yourself, Dan, should praise and advocate that. Dont turn the blind eye and say the current testing is good enough (Pac/Mayweather aside).

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Here is the point I have made to the Mayweather canmp: If they want Manny tested, fine. BUT do not just single him out. Get Nevada to change its rules for everyone and have stricter testing for everyone. That I would support. I do not support singling one man out. Make it across the board. You want to fight in Nevada? You follow these rules and have them include blood testing.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

I like the Lara-Brewer fight. Nice step up in competition. Assuming he wins, is he about 2 fights or so away from a title shot?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I agree, it's a good step up. Lara talent wise is probably ready now but nobody will fight him and risk a title yet. Let him beat Brewer and, like you said, one or two more legit fights and then maybe somebody will give him a shot.

Ryan (Michigan)

The mayweather brian kenny video on FNF. Was that a rehearsed commericial or were they filmed just messing around? I swear I've seen that commericial on tv before but that looked like edits of it. Funny though.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

The longer video you saw was them messing around.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Does Korobov get a title shot this year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Unlikely. I would say definitely not.

Bryce (Miami, FL)

Dan nailed it, Joe. It's one thing if the NFL wants to start testing for HGH. Great. Put it in the next CBA. But if Jerry Jones demanded blood testing for, say, Favre and Peterson before this weekend's game? People would be (rightfully) tearing him to shreds.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Danno, Isn't it strange that a lightweight(Manny) is attempting to clean out the welterweight division while a welterweight(Money) is cleaning out the lightweight division? And Mayweather wonders why true boxing fans are frustrated by him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Exactly.

David (Houston)

I think maybe part of the reason people give Manny more credit is because he takes challenges. Floyd doesnt. Plus Floyd always has to tell us how good he is when pacman just shuts up and does it.

Brian (RI)

Will Darchynian get a rematch with Nonito Donaire this year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Very possibly, unless he gets a fight with Mayweather!

kevin (Milwaukee)

Any truth that Mayweather/Mosley will fight in june if Mosley wins

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

That is certainly a scenario that is being discussed.

Bucky (Denver)

I feel for you having to field the same questions for the past 3 weeks. Lets not make this worse than it already is.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

It goes with the territory.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Freaks, just got this email from Andre Berto's publicist. She saw the question earlier about Berto's family and she sent me this:I saw the question about Berto on your chat regarding his family. They have found his older sister, Naomi and her daughter and husband. She is alive but her house collapsed so she is homeless. Fortunately she was not at home at the time of the earthquake. He has heard of at leat 8-9 cousins that have passed away and is still awaiting word from additional family members.

Homer (Ohio)

Dan, you said that Bute was not invited into the Super Six, but 19 seconds in to the first Fight Camp 360 episode, his name was written down as a possible participant.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

He was of course mentioned in the early talks simply because he was one of the top 168s, but he was never actually invited to participate.

John (NYC)

prayers to the Bertos

Bronk (Dillsburg, PA)

Terrible news about Berto's cousins. Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in Haiti.

Koichi (NYC)

I think I speak for all of the Freaks that our thoughts and prayers go out to Berto and his family and all the people in Haiti suffering from this.

Wil (SC)

Nothing on the Hitman's return this week? That is this weeks biggest story by far.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

A) It's not even close to the biggest story. B) There is a story all about it on ESPN.com in the news headlines.

Jesse (Mpls)

Dan, please pass along all of our thoughts and prayers to Andre Berto and his family. We are all sending our deepest sypathies

Shave Your Head (NYC)

Your 100% biased hater that can't say for a second that IDOL MANNY could be dirty..........Just like the media saying ARod was clean.....Plus C.Dawson trainer,Mosley,Cotto,Oscar and many others have gone on record wondering why wont manny take a test but you................ARE Just a Hater........Its Floyd fault....its Floyd fault............MayHater...

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Mark (ATL)

How does the Jerry Jone's site fee of $3 million compare with other venues?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Jerry is paying double that.

Mark (WI)

What is Erik Morales up to?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

About 190.

Grant (Scotland)

To be fair , Floyd's been ducking Shane for years but Pacquiao only for a few months so it's only right Suger gets first go to knock his head off

Homer (OH)

Back home, I get FSN on basic cable. At college, no matter how high I upgrade my cable, FSN is not available. Transfer or drop out?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Transfer.

Tony (Spring Lake, NC)

Who do you see as a legitimate contender for the Wladimir and Vitali

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Each other.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, I'm gonna give you a little of your own medicine. Someone asked earlier about Russian prospect Ruslan Providnikov. You said you weren't sure. He's on your schedule. February 12th FNF card. Check it or risk banishment Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

You're right dude. Good call.

Mrs. DTM (at work)

The poor Berto family, and tragic for all the poor people of Haiti. You can text message a donation to the Red Cross through text2help: Subscribers of participating wireless carriers can donate $5 to American Red Cross disaster relief efforts simply by text messaging the keyword GIVE to 2HELP (24357).

Carlos (Miramar, FL)

Dan, I work with a few Haitian-Americans whom had family in Haiti at the time of the quake. I told them who Andre Berto was and when he was fighting. They were very excited to say the least. Needless to say, there's a big fight party at my house for Jan 30th.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Cool.

Michael (Toronto)

Adding to Mrs. DTM's message, Unicef has links in both the US and Canada to send a tax-deductible donation straight to the Haiti efforts.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Danno, Did you have any input on the 50 fights of the decade from ESPN?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

None.

James (Athens)

Did you see Rogers Mtagwa is a 14-1 underdog? I know he's not in the same class, but for a guy who brings it hard for 12 rounds he should not be that deep. 14-1?! Money to be made..

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

If you see him 14-1 to somewhere, that is insane. Granted, he's the dog for sure, but 14-1 is way too much.

Mackey (Oklahoma)

If there careers ended today who would have the better career, Pacman or Mosely

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Pacquiao.

Rob (Long Island, New York)

Dan, With all the talk of Mark McGwire never making the Baseball Hall of Fame being that he is an admitted steroid user, I am just wondering how you will vote when Shane Mosley's name is on the ballot being that he too has been linked to steroids.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I will probably vote for him.

jarrod (Indiana)

Dan someone mentioned the international broadcast for the Mosley-Berto fight. How do go about getting that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Move to Europe or South America or Japan.

R! (Yay Area)

Any news on what Librado Andrade could be up to next? Miranda vs Andrade anyone??

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Richard Schaefer from Golden Boy mentioned to me the other day that there was a little bit of a discussion about Andrade going back to Montreal and facing Diaconu.

Devale (Chicago)

what?! how can you have no input on the top 50? who put it together then?!

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I have no idea. I don't even know the list exists. I have not seen anything about it.

Mackey (Oklahoma)

Thanks for the answer, not that i disagree but why would you give it to Pacman over Mosely? is it because of the 7 betlts in diff weight classes or he faced better competition

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Both reasons. He consistently challenged himself against the very best. Mayweather stopped doing that years ago.

Marc (Salisbury)

Any word on why Fernando Guerrero pulled out of the February FNF card in Cleveland?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Minor hand injury.

Mackey (Oklahoma)

I think you misunderstood me, Mosely not Mayweather

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

You're right. My bad. Pacquiao probably rates higher than Mosley because of the titles and the overwhelming competition he faced and beat. But Shane has had a great career also.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I'm back. That was the Bat Phone. Nothing for the Freaks though.

Tony (Connecticut)

Dan, When is Chad Dawson going to fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Probably in June.

rich (cape cod)

now that we have Jones vs hopkins, and soon, Holyfield vs. Botha, I think the Senior Tour has truly come to fruition in 2010 (the year for Old Men!). Who is next, Bowe vs Razor Ruddock? Tommy Morrison vs. Pinklon Thomas?......make it stop!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Fenech-Nelson 4!!!!!

John (Grand Rapids, Mi)

David Diaz and a Raisin of DeLaHoya's carcass are 'the very best' ? Floyd fights the #2 P4P guy an gets lambasted for it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Floyd fought the No. 2 who was two weight classes smaller. Floyd fought such legendary fights as Sharmba Mitchell and Henry Bruseles. Please.

Koichi (NYC)

John you should be banned, what if Floyd fights Ivan Calederon who is also top ten P4P, you think he deserves credit for that?

Grant (Scotland)

Judging a top class fighter's legacy made easy- when the elite names missing from the record are more impressive than the elite ones on it you've got yourself an underachiever.

Chris (West Windsor, NJ)

Someone asks you a question about Pacquiao - Mosley, and you respond by ripping Mayweather. What a hater. Can you respond to any question without slamming Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

I already pointed out that I made an error in reading that question and addressed it previously you idiot.

Kyle ((Philly))

At least after dealing with all this mess you finally get to visit Southfork Ranch, right?

Wojo (Chicago)

Dan, how many hours per week would you say you have to talk boxing on the phone as a reporter? Do you get calls in the middle of the night?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Way too many to count and yes.

kelby (omaha)

I kinda wish Floyd would go back into retirement now....

Jess (CA)

Do you gve Roy Jones any chance vs Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Not much.

Paul (Carlsbad, CA )

You mean like Manny moved up 2 weight classes to fight ODLH if Oscar had won would have you cried the same thing?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

You are forgetting that when they made Oscar-Pacquiao it was supposed to be a MASSIVE mismatch in Oscar's favor. And Pacquiao destroyed him. People laughed at the fight. Don't forget that.

Dave (Arlington)

Paul Williams vs Thomas Hears?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Hearns by devastating knockout.

James (Athens)

There were talks of ring deaths when Oscar fought Manny and not in Manny's favor

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Exactly. So in the aftermath I don't want to hear Oscar was drained, Oscar was this or that. It was supposed to be a DEATH MATCH and an EASY win for Oscar. Not even comeptitive. Well it wasn't and it was because Manny beat the living dog crap out of him.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

And, by the way, when I wrote about that fight after Larry Merchant suggested it to me, I was RIPPED for saying it was insane that Manny would fight Oscar because it was such a gross mismatch. Go back and read the stories. No Monday Morning Quarterbacking.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan please explain to me why after Teddy droped that bombshell of an accusation you wouldnt follow up at the very least to see if there was any legitamcy to the claims?I just have a hard time believing that your not being a little in denial that Manny may have cheated.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Ask the producer of the show. They tell us when to talk. Brian and I were not given an opportunity to respond.

Jake (Binghamton, NY)

Which fights cement Oscar's place in the hall of fame? I can't think of that many.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

But you can think of some and that's the point.

Joe (Philly)

Dan, who do you think would win, Pacquiao or Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Let them sign to fight first.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

I was sceptical of Juan Manual Marquez caring the coveted 1st week of May date this year. I think Golden Boy just threw him out there to hold the date until mosley beats berto and fights mayweather there. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

I think it's entirely possible Mayweather moves to May 1 and maybe Marquez goes on the undercard.

Gene (Denver)

Dan, just got a new job and now I can be at the chats live! Read both your article and lole's about top ranks new series on fox. I really hope they come through with some good fights so it can be another great venue for the sport.

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

I agree. I think Top Rank is taking this series a lot more seriously than it took Versus and hopefully they will make it work by making real fights like the one we have tomorrow between Martirosyan and Ouma.

kevin (Milwaukee)

If Mayweather sticks with march 13 who should he fight? and after such a long don't you think he needs to stay busy?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Maybe I will be proven wrong but I do not believe Floyd will wind up fighting on March 13.

Greenberg (NYC)

Dan, Any word on who Margacheato might be fighting in March?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Looks like Carson Jones, who just exposed Tyrone Brunson on ShoBox.

Marc (Philadelphia)

Sprite next week at the Affina? I may come bearing gifts for DTM

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Make it a double.

Brandon (San Diego)

DTM a while back we talked about you punching the machine that BK punched to see who was stronger. While you were in studio last week did you get a chance to punch it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Didn't see it while I was in Bristol.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

John from Grand Rapids, did you forget that Manny fought Morales, Barrera, Cotto, and now Clottey. All top guys in their division. Not to mention he destroyed Hatton and Hatton gave Mayweather all he could handle. Nobody denies Floyd's talent and greatness but keep it real. When he fights the Mosley's, the Cotto's, the Margarito's we will give him his propers.

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

You forgot he also fought Marquez twice at their natural weights.

bennyc407 (Florida)

Answer me this Dan "Why doesnt manny just take the test and KO mayweather" Alot of money on the table to walk away from over a blood test don't you think ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

That is a reasonable point that many have also made.

Tony (Denver)

Pretty brutal the way you decide to publish all these contemptful posts about Floyd, Dan. I don't pay my insider subscription to read your hate fuelled, illogical rants because he doesn't invite you over for lunch the day after fights.

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

You're a bigger idiot than I originally thought.

Gene (Denver)

Disclaimer: Tony does not represent the ideas thoughts and or views of Denver and its inhibitants.

Joe (STL)

Any chance of Mayweather-Hatton II?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Hopefully not.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

I wonder why Floyd fans are so delusional? I have some close friends who love Floyd but you cant even argue with them. If you put Oscar's, Shane's, Manny's, Sugar Ray, Tommy Hearns, and Floyd's resume all side by side whose is the weakest ? It's Floyd's by a mile.

Nick (New York)

How long before we see a Top Rank vs Golden Boy fighter?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Could be awhile.

Chris (Oklahoma City, Ok)

Dan, not sure if you're a Shakespeare guy or not, but after reading your blog this week I kept waiting for the Romeo and Juliet line "A PLAGUE ON BOTH YOUR HOUSES!!!!" For top rank and GBP. It seemed fitting

Manny (Pinoy)

Give Floyd some credit.......he fights the best underdogs

Devale (Chicago)

where's Bing the moron?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Hopefully, playing in traffic.

Horn (Vegas)

I need Bob's middle finger to express how I'm feeling about boxing nowadays.

Michael (Aberdeen)

Great Notebook today Dan! Really looking forward to that Shumenov and Lara card. Thank you FSN!

Bryce (Fargo)

Do you think Floyd taking on a weak opponent March 13th would hurt his leverage in negotiating a future fight with Pac?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Of course.

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Can somebody please ask about something other than Pacquiao and Mayweather? I want to throw up at this point.

Joe (San Diego)

This is the most one-sided chat ive been involved in. Dan, I truely love your work, but this anti floyd/pro manny crap is getting a little ridiculous side...

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

I dont disagree but like I said earlier -- almost every comment about it is anti-Floyd.

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

OK, Freaks, I am Pacquiao-Mayweathered out. I can't take it anymore today. I hope you have a great weekend. Enjoy the notebook, blogs and news stories and remember to check out FNF tonight, not to mention the debut of Top Rank Live tomorrow. Talk to you next week from New York. Peace.
