Chat with Tim Graham

Tim Graham
  (2:59 PM)

Good afternoon from Graham HQ on the Niagara Frontier. I'm off to San Diego in the morning and looking forward to what should be a great matchup. Let's get to some questions.

Anthony Powell (Boynton Beach, Florida)

Tim Do you think it is very likely the Patriots will promote Pepper Jonhson to be their defensive coordinator and do you think it would be a wise move?

Tim Graham
  (3:00 PM)

Not sure how likely it is, but I know that both Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells think the world of him as a coach ... just as they thought of him when he played. I can see that promotion happening.

Justin (California)

What are the chances the dolphins draft Rolando McClain with the 12th overall pick?

Tim Graham
  (3:02 PM)

If he's still on the board at No. 12, he'll be very difficult for them to pass up. Remember that the Dolphins weren't thrilled with Channing Crowder heading into the season and were willing to let him walk. Crowder remained a Dolphin only because he gave them a discount rate to stay. Akin Ayodele hasn't been a game-changer either.

Jonathan (Connecticut)

There have been rumors about the pats getting rid of Moss. I think that would be stupid. What do you think about keeping Moss?

Tim Graham
  (3:03 PM)

The rumors you're referring to stem from speculation from commentators providing avante garde analysis. These are reports coming from within the league.

HP (PA)

Why would Butler turn down an opportunity for a promotion to an up and coming team?

Tim Graham
  (3:04 PM)

I could think of a few reasons. Maybe he learned something about the job he didn't like. Maybe the Steelers gave him a nice raise. But the likeliest reason is that he has been promised the coordinator job in Pittsburgh once Dick LeBeau retires.

Jason (Northern MI)

What wrinkles might we see from Mike Westhoff and the Jets special teams on Sunday?

Tim Graham
  (3:04 PM)

A nice wrinkle would be tackling the return man inside the 35.

StvDoe (NYC)

Howdy Tim,Do you think Sanchez throwing for over 250 yards means the Jets lose?

Tim Graham
  (3:05 PM)

I do. If he has to throw that often, then it's a bad, bad sign.

Brad (Boston, MA)

With no help in sight for the Bills' O-line, do you see them making a play for a 2-way QB like Tebow or Vick in the offseason?

Tim Graham
  (3:06 PM)

That would be a solution. I don't agree with that approach, but we do know the Bills were interested in Vick over the summer, and de facto team spokesman Jim Kelly has stated he wants them to draft Tebow. That sort of quarterback would help from an O-line standpoint, but I don't think it's a long-term solution.

Ryan (San Diego)

Why so much hype for a jets team that have beaten nobody? Best win is against Cincy and they were reeling at the time

Tim Graham
  (3:07 PM)

The Jets beat the New England Patriots. That was a nice victory.

Tim Graham
  (3:08 PM)

I thought the win over the Houston Texans was solid.

Chris (NY)

If the Bills decided to trade Lynch, what do you think they could get for him?

Tim Graham
  (3:10 PM)

I haven't spoken to any front office types about this scenario, but I would say maybe a third-rounder. Teams know the Bills would be unloading him. He has baggage. He's one more strike away from a major suspension and running backs aren't too tough to find in the draft. The Jets selected the reigning Doak Walker Award winner in the third round last year.

jay (alex, va)

great work you do on the blog tim. as a charger fan, its just fine by me that all the attention is on the jets. (mostly due to them) but as the afc east blogger, i would like you to comment on the fact that all we hear about is how the jets are going to run run run themselves to a victory by the "experts" (ditka, johnson, m.williamson, bruschi, l.brown, etc.) and how revis is going to shut vjax down.on the run, um... isn't that what the giants, cowboys, and titans were supposed to do? how'd that work out for them? and how many revis' do the jets have? they'll need about 7 of them by my count.as my boy b.williamson says... jets may have been hot for the last 3 weeks, but we've been doing it for 3 months. new york and the media seems to have forgotten that.thanks tim!

Tim Graham
  (3:10 PM)

Thanks for the kinds words, Jay. Glad you crossed over the AFC East blog for a week.

GUy (NY)

Tim, if the moon was made of BBQ spare ribs would you eat it?

Tim Graham
  (3:11 PM)

Nah, too messy. Just think of how big that napkin would be. If it were made out of wings, I'd think about it.

Jonathan (Connecticut)

Um, okay. So then what do you think of the idea of the Pats getting rid of Moss? Seems insane.

Tim Graham
  (3:12 PM)

I agree. He's an elite weapon. What the Patriots need is a reliable third receiver to complete the offense.

Jerry (Ohio)

Since Al Groh and Keith Butler have said no thanks, who's on the Dolphin's radar now for Def. Coordinator ?

Tim Graham
  (3:13 PM)

The only other name I've heard (there could be a lot going on behind closed doors) is assistant head coach and secondary assistant Todd Bowles. He has interviewed for head coaching jobs before. I think that would be a safe and effective hire.

Bill (NH)

Why doesn't anyone want the Bills job? Who do you see finally getting the job?

Tim Graham
  (3:15 PM)

There are a lot of possible reasons, but the long-term future of the team is a biggie. When a coach takes a job, he brings a certain confidence that makes him assume he'll be around a long time. But he often has a wife and kids to consider. Where will the team be (and where will his family be living) in three, five, seven years?

Tim Graham
  (3:15 PM)

Another issue -- for the offensive-minded coaches -- is the quarterback situation. Depressing.

Xander (Philly)

Bill (NH), whu did you ask that question? I hate hearing why Buffalo sucks. Here's hoping Frazier is a great coach!

Tim Graham
  (3:16 PM)

If the Bills hire Frazier, I know Bills fans are going to feel let down by comparison to the other names that were mentioned. But Frazier is legit. I would be an advocate of that move.

Derek (Pittsburgh)

Lot of questions about teams not involved in the playoffs..what's up with Jones' knee? I read that was the reason Greene got the majority of the carries last Sunday.

Tim Graham
  (3:17 PM)

Jones' bruised knee supposedly is OK. It kept him out of practice this week, but the Jets seem OK with where he is. They didn't hesitate to give him the ball on that point-blank TD run in the second half Saturday.

Finley (Kuharsky's dog)

Tim, I need some help here. Been trying to get the old man to move to LA since the Jags will be moving there, and he's not buying it. Do you have any advice?

Tim Graham
  (3:19 PM)

Be careful what you wish for, Finley. Not as much grass in Southern California as there is in Nashville.

Mike (Ohio)

Colts fan here. Leslie Frazier would be a great hire. He was the DB coach for the Colts and managed to make Nick Harper an effective player. We wanted Dungy to fire Ron Meeks and make Frazier the DC but it didn't happen and he got the job in Minnesota. Great coach.

Brandon ((New Windsor, NY))

Hey Tim,What year do you predict the buffalo bills will finally get back into the playoffs?

Tim Graham
  (3:20 PM)

I'd like to see how they approach the offseason before I answer this question, but I'll take a stab at 2012. The Jets and Dolphins are getting better faster. The Patriots will be dangerous as long as Tom Brady's the quarterback and Bill Belichick is the head coach.

Ryan (San Diego)

You realize those two Jets wins came in weeks 1 and 2 right? And that teams evolve and get better and worse. The Broncos were 6-0 at one point...the Jets are a joke that padded their stats on weak competition. 3 wins against teams with winning records

Tim Graham
  (3:21 PM)

Thanks for the education, Ryan. ESPN hired me straight out of DeVry Institute, and we didn't have a football program. I'm learning as I go.

Jimbo (Brooklyn)

Hey Tim, What do you see NYJ addressing with their mid to high 20's draft pick?

Tim Graham
  (3:22 PM)

With the way Mike Tannenbaum approaches the draft, I would be shocked if that's where the Jets make their first pick.

Zach (Hawaii)

Hey Tim,Do you think Tom Brady is officially past his prime?

Tim Graham
  (3:23 PM)

I'm not ready to say that. He did have one of the best statistical seasons of his career. Of course, everyone will remember how the season ended. It's tough to play from three scores down without your best receiver.

ken (Redondo Bch)

Will the Bills try to get Vick and what is your opinion is their draft needs. thanks

Tim Graham
  (3:25 PM)

If they don't draft an offensive tackle with their first pick, then I don't know what to say. I guess I could forgive them if Sam Bradford slips to them. As for Vick, I'm not sure from where that interest was driven before. It's possible that person no longer will be with the organization.

D. William Parcells (Miami)

Tim, I think there is a 26.7% chance that Brady is past his prime.

Tim Graham
  (3:26 PM)

That's a good number, Duane.

Zach (Hawaii)

Do you think Paul Kuharsky is past his prime?

Tim Graham
  (3:27 PM)

I'm still waiting for him to enter his prime. But I'm afraid it just won't happen. Ton of upside. Just never had the work ethic.

Denis (ME)

Thanks for ignoring my questions, Tim.

Tim Graham
  (3:27 PM)

You got it, Denis.

Avi (Boston)

Whose your favorite colleague at ESPN?

Tim Graham
  (3:28 PM)

Is Kiana still on the air?

Tony (Michigan)

Are you still paying off your student loans to DeVry?

Tim Graham
  (3:29 PM)

Please, Tony. I got a full ride for welding.

Derek (Pittsburgh)

More man coverage or zone behind the blitzes Sunday from the Jets? Man gives the Chargers a definate advantage at TE and RB correct?

Tim Graham
  (3:31 PM)

It would seem that way, Derek. For an outside-the-box thought on how to best handle the Chargers offense, check out this blog: http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/9288/maybe-jets-shouldnt-worry-about-rivers

Tony (Indiana)

Tim, would Parcells draft Dez Bryant if he was available at 12? He doesn't seem high on drafting WRs early.

Tim Graham
  (3:32 PM)

It's rare for Parcells to go after a receiver, but it's a need. And if Bryant's the best option on the board, the Dolphins could bite.

Sean (Philly)

Come on Tony, he was a top 5 welding prospect coming out of Votech.

Tony (Michigan)

Since you WERE an award winning NHL writer. Do you have a favorite NHL team? Please tell me it's not Colorado or Pittsburgh!

Tim Graham
  (3:34 PM)

I don't have a favorite team. I grew up in Cleveland, where the NHL wisely abandoned in the 1970s. So I never had a rooting interest. But I do have a passion for the game.

JR (Tampa Bay)

Tim, do you think the ravens will be able to ride their victory over the colts or will the colts be able to shake off the dust of too many weeks without a meaningful game?

Tim Graham
  (3:35 PM)

When the Colts take the field on Saturday, they will not have won a game in four weeks. Two straight losses and the bye ... I think the Ravens have all the momentum.

Zach (Hawaii)

can we not talk about hockey in an NFL CHAT!

Tim Graham
  (3:35 PM)

Zach, you've been around my chats long enough to know better than that.

Matt (Augusta, GA)

Wouldn't it make more sense for the Bills to trade Fred Jackson? I know he was their best player this year, but he is considerably older than Lynch and the fact he was so good this year probably fetches the Bills a better draft pcik in return.

Tim Graham
  (3:37 PM)

Jackson's contract is commensurate with a guy of his background: undrafted out of Division III. He's one of the NFL's best values and a great locker room presence. No way the Bills trade him.

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

Zach, you must have been bad in 2009, because Santa obviously didn't bring you the Official Chat Rulebook. I'll cut you a break--this time.

shane (Jersey City)

Tim rather talk hockey then talk about the Jets who are still in the playoff! heck he rather talk about the colts!

Tim Graham
  (3:38 PM)

I couldn't have written it any better myself.

Xander (Philly)

Thats cause Rex Ryan is the most annoying man on the planet and deserves no mention (his team included).

Tim Graham
  (3:39 PM)

Unless you're the one mentioning him.

Marti (Greece)

Tim, what do you think of the Dolphins safety combo? I think they can't coexist.

Tim Graham
  (3:40 PM)

Somebody has to go. If I had my druthers, it would be Gibril Wilson.

Jimbo (Brooklyn)

Good point on Tannenbaum's draft aggressiveness, but my question was more about what you think the Jets will address position wise. Thanks!

Tim Graham
  (3:41 PM)

Receiver is the biggest need. If they can find one with return skills, that might help because Leon Washington will have a long recovery. Other than that, they can go with the best player on the board and cultivate him. They're pretty solid everywhere else.

Corey "Squirt" Ferris (In Da Hizzzzouse! )

Grahamie! I am about to break my ceramic statue of you right over my head if I don't get a question answered. So I will make it easy on you. Blush or Chardonnay? I like Boone's fuzzy navel myself but I am a lightweight.

Tim Graham
  (3:42 PM)

The last time I drank Boone's Farm, I got arrested. So I'm all for it. Strawberry Hill.

Tony (Michigan)

It appears we have some NHL haters out there. What a shocker though.......a guy from Hawaii isn't into the NHL.

Patrick (Tulsa,OK)

Do you think the hiring of Charlie Weiss and Romeo Crennel will have the same success with the Kansas City Chiefs as they did with the New England Patriots.

Tim Graham
  (3:43 PM)

It's all about the players. If they can find the next Tom Brady, then they'll be fine. But there is something to be said for chemistry on a coaching staff, and these guys have done it before. I like what they're doing there.

Avi (Getzville, NY)

Secretly, which nfl team are you a fan of?

Tim Graham
  (3:44 PM)

None. I grew up a Browns fan but stopped caring when they moved to Baltimore. Now I'm just a fan of the game.

jay (alex, va)

hmmmm, that link you posted? so the strategy is to let rivers throw all over the jets? lemme know how that works out...

Tim Graham
  (3:45 PM)

You might want to read it first. The author makes some interesting points. And if you did read and that summation is all you took from it, then there's no sense discussing it because you don't lack the brain power to comprehend unorthodox thought.

Sean (Indianapolis)

That's ok, the Browns stopped caring when they came back to Cleveland.

jay (alex, va)

its all in good fun tim, i swear! i really do enjoy your chats. :)

Matt (Augusta, GA)

At this point, who do you like to win the Super Bowl?

Tim Graham
  (3:47 PM)

Believe it or not, the Cowboys. The way they rolled the Eagles was impressive. They have some serious momentum.

Sean (Philly)

Where is Ed Hochuli? That Emoticon should have been flagged...

Matt (Augusta, GA)

You know Tony Romo is their QB, correct?

Chet (St Louis)

I stopped caring about this chat when Tim didn't post any of my questions...

Suheal (Los Angeles)

Do you think that the Jets can upset the hot streaking Chargers?

Tim Graham
  (3:49 PM)

They can, but I don't think they will. I like the Chargers in this matchup, but a Jets victory would not stun me.

Brett (Mt. Favre)

My right arm will strike down the Cowboys Sunday with thunderbolts thrown in all directions ... hopefully away from guys with stars on their helmets...

Ryan (San Diego)

Cmon Tim, that article is another bogus NY media crap piece. The Chargers lost one of those games without LT and the other was his first game back from injury. Those losses also came with their offensive line struggling with injuries and new starters. WHERE do they mention that? Do you comprehend my point?

Tim Graham
  (3:52 PM)

Oh, I absolutely can see your point of Tomlinson not being available for one of those games. That 3.3-yard average is indispensible.

Josh (Vineland,NJ)

Is Flacco elite?

Tim Graham
  (3:52 PM)

Uh, no.

Zach (Hawaii)

tim I think NBC should give you a late night show. It seems like they're losing their whole line up

Tim Graham
  (3:54 PM)

No, thanks. I still want to be employed next year. ... By the way, Jimmy Kimmel was sensational on Jay Leno's show last night.

Mason (New York)

tim, you must be flagged for poor representation of all AFC east team!

Tim Graham
  (3:54 PM)

Thanks, Tonto.

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

Not to fear, Ed is here. Jay, we don't allow emoticons around here, even if they are being used to suck up to Tim. If he needs to feel good about himself, he just reads Kuharsky. That's 5 yards and it remains 1st down

Tim Graham
  (3:55 PM)

What took so long on that ruling, Ed? Were you reviewing it?

Tim Graham
  (3:56 PM)

A couple more, fellas. I have to do Indianapolis radio in five minutes.

Luciano (Rogers, AR)

Tim, any chance you can have ESPN post all the pre-season picks by the staff?

Tim Graham
  (3:57 PM)

They're out there. Go to the ESPN.com's NFL page. I don't have the link handy, but it's there somewhere. We don't take that stuff down.

Ralph Wilson (Buffalo (via Detroit))

Tim... Ive asked you twice if you would interview... are you turning me down too?

Jimbo (Brooklyn)

Do you know who the officiating crews are for the games this weekend? (or where to find out?)

Tim Graham
  (3:59 PM)

Those aren't made public, and the league prefers to keep that info as low-key as possible. So there's no site to really find that.

Seth (Modesto CA.)

Bralyn Edwards will torch the SD secondary opening it up for JONES. GO AFC EAST

Tim Graham
  (4:00 PM)

He torches every defense. Then drops it.

Tim Graham
  (4:00 PM)

OK, guys. Gotsta go. See you here next week.
