Another busy day. I'll try to get to as many questions as possible before I have to head downtown to get ready for tonight's Kia NBA Shootaround.
Chances Bynum for Bosh trade really happens?
I was told "zero" by a Toronto source a week ago, but I think as we get closer to the trade deadline the chances of any big deal increase. So maybe increasing to 30%. The Raptors still don't want to trade Bosh and are hoping things will work out. If they don't get those signs, I haven't heard a scenario that's much better than Bynum.
What's going on with Brandon Jennings? Growing pains for a rookie? Teams adjusting now that they have film to watch? Or is he just in an extended funk? His shooting percentage has dropped dramatically but I haven't seen enough games to tell if it's good shots just not falling, or if it's poor selection. Can he turn it around? Thanks!
I've seen him play in person twice the past few weeks, and he had very few good looks. He had to create almost all of his shots on his own. A lot of dribbling. And sometimes the shots looked good and just didn't fall.
Give me one reason now to be really mad at Dumars for drafting Summers over Blair?
you mean you're not still mad about him drafting Darko ahead of Carmelo, Bosh and Wade?
Did OKC violate the salary cap when they used ghosts to haunt the Knicks?
maybe they didn't violate the letter of the law, but the spirits?
JA, if the NBA granted the Wiz to break Arenas contract why they have to do a major blowout... next season they currently have $53M including $17,7M of Arenas; so if the contract is voided you will have at least for 1 Max player and still have Jaimison, Butler + Top 5 pick.. don you agree or is better to do moves now?
I think you have to start from scratch, regardless of the Arenas outcome. That core's been together several years and isn't making progress. The problem is I don't think they'll have everything resolved before the trading deadline, so they might as well operate under the assumption they won't have Arenas -- at least for the rest of the season
Blake Griffin, And Greg Oden Both have season ending injuries which one of them has a bigger impact to their team success through the season,
gotta go with Oden. We don't know exactly what impact Griffin would have had since he hadn't played at all. Oden was becoming a major defensive presence, averaging 2 blocks per game.
I was at the Jazz-Cavs game, and it had the best ending of a game I've ever attended. What NBA game that you have attended had the most dramatic ending?
I've been lucky to see a number of highlight endings. Kareem made a hook shot at the buzzer to beat the Cavs (in the old wine and gold uniforms) in the very first NBA game I attended. Saw Michael Jordan's "The Shot II" to beat Cleveland in 1993. But the the Robert Horry shot vs. Sacramento, Game 4 in 2002 is at the top of my list
In the not-so-distant-future, do you see Buss blowing up the Lakers once Kobe Bryant finally retires? We're talking about this at work today. Will they end up like Chicago, struggling to find another superstar to lead the team? Think it's fair to compare losing Bryant in L.A. to Chicago losing Jordan?
I believe Buss is willing to go all in right now to squeeze out a few more championships in the Kobe era and then will ease up after shelling out so much luxury tax $. There's a difference between Chicago and LA, though, in that the Lakers will have to stay competitive in order to keep selling tickets. The Bulls had suites sales locked into long-term contracts after Jordan retired, and ticket sales remained strong because United Center had become a destination (the house that Jordan built). L.A. doesn't work that way. The Lakers couldn't withstand a 7-year playoff drought the way the Bulls did. A good test case will be the crowds at the Coliseum if Lane Kiffin can't maintain that Pete Carroll momentum at USC
How do you see the return of Kevin Martin playing out? Martin and Reke could be a deadly backcourt if they can mesh, or is Martin going to be traded for a all-star caliber big man, bosh or jefferson?? Thanks!
Evans' play (along with the rest of the squad) has made Martin expendable. The Kings would like to move him, but I don't see other teams eager to send a big man for him.
who will be rookie of the year next year, blake griffin or john wall?
The way things have been skewing toward guards lately, I'm going with John Wall
Simmons and Ford talked about Bosh becoming a Laker and that if it happens, the landscape of the 2010 Summer FA spree changes. LeBron stays in Cleveland ... ect. What do you think?
Not completely. I believe the likely destination for LeBron if he left would be Miami, and Bosh going to LA doesn't change that. LeBron and Wade are really the only free agents I consider landscape-changing if they move
Do you think after the Cavs lost last night they may be in more of a rush to sign someone to give the offense a extra push so that Lebron will have more help?
All they had in the fourth quarter was LeBron. It was an incredible performance, but indicative that they need a little more. I wouldn't panic after one game in which they lost on a last-second shot, but they need another scoring option besides Bron and Mo Williams
Do you think the PHX suns will make any roster changes. How about trading Barbosa for a powerforward or a Center who can play defense?
I wouldn't be so quick to move Barbosa. You saw how they swooned without him in December.
settle an argument, my friend says home court is a HUGE factor in the playoffs, I say its not a factor at all until game 7. maybe in the finals because rarely do road teams sweep the middle 3 but through game 6 each team gets 3 shots on their own floor, wheres the advantage?
It depends on the team. For example, the Hawks weren't ready to win in Boston in the 2008 playoffs, but could win a playoff game there now. Lakers won 3 of their last 4 road playoff games last year, something they weren't ready to do the year before. A mature team isn't afraid of the road, which is why Gregg Popovich doesn't worry about it for his Spurs. You saw them beat a good Phoenix team without homecourt advantage a few years ago.
Who do you think would be the best fit for Cleveland if they traded Z? West, Murphy or Jamison?
If Gilbert Arenas contract isn't voidable and the trade market is slim, what options to the Wizards have?
I'd call the trade market "none", not slim. the one that encounter the least resistance from the union would be a buyout, but at $80 million and with the antagonistic stance between the two parties, it wouldn't come easily. they could argue that instead of spending money on a legal fight, he could take a discount on the remainder of the contract.
Sorry for the delays..processing the news about Gilbert's guilty plea...
The Bulls frustrate me with their logic. If they want to move Tyrus Thomas now so they can get ready for 2010 then why bring him off the bench for 15 minutes a game and start a rookie? Showcasing Tyrus helps their future and is a better player now anyway. What am I missing?
Thomas frustrates the Bulls, too. they can't be sure what they're getting from him, and as Doug Collins pointed out last night, he's too dependent on offensive rebounds to score. They need more guys on the floor who can generate their own offense.
Will Gilbert Arenas ever play in the NBA again?
Yes. He didn't choke a coach. He didn't go into the stands to fight fans. The league would have enough of a fight on its hands trying to void his current contract, let alone giving him a lifetime ban. He should get another chance (i was going to say shot), but it needs to be somewhere besides Washington.
Any further comment on your source for the assertion that the Kings are actively looking to move Martin? As a rabid follower of all things Sacrament, I've not heard any such rumblings excepting the ESPN echo chamber. Also, much as I love what Evans' supporting cast is doing...I don't see how any of them make a 25 PPG scorer expendable.
who's your source that said "actively looking"? Because that's not what I said. You know I can't reveal sources, but other GMs around the league believe the Kings wouldn't mind moving Martin.
J.A. why did Mike Brown have LeBron take the ball out of bounds the whole 4th quarter? The best player on the team should be taking those free throws not Anthony Parker. Lebron was on fire for that 5 minute stretch and then Mike Brown didnt allow him to close the game out. Your thoughts?
I was wondering the same thing. Made no sense to have LeBron inbounding the ball. Maybe he isn't Larry Bird at the FT line, and obviously he's a great passer, but I still want him the receiving end of the inbounds pass.
So essentially now the Wizards will void his contract, esp since Gilbert will be getting jailtime?
The union would still fight a void, even if Gilbert's in jail. They would sign off on a suspension that covered the time of the jail sentence, but do not want to set a voiding precedent with this case.
With Dalembert's recent success, is there a better chance of trading him or is he a Sixer till his deal runs dry?
Serious question: I wonder if the tragedy in Haiti will have any impact on a decision to move him. He has so much occupying his mind right now it would seem almost cruel to send him packing in the midst of this.
A reminder that you can help send a $10 donation to the relief efforts by texting HAITI to 90999. I'll leave on that not, an apology accepted to Daniel in the Bay Area.
