Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

Hi everyone, let's get rolling.

Adam (Kansas)

This new staff will send KC in the right direction.. now with all of the cap room, hopefully they put it to good use this offseason.

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

Well said, Adam. The Chiefs have had a nice start to 2010. Now, they have to continue it.

Matt (Athens)

Chances we see the "LT Style Electric Glide" from a Charger Sunday when they score?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

I wouldn't be surprised, Matt. Not at all.

Kevin (Patriot Nation)

Would Ben Watson and the Pats 1st round pick (not the Raiders' pick) in the 2011 draft be enough for Marshall ?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

The Raiders' pick is in 2011. I think your proposed trade could interest McDaniels.

Jonathan (Chicago)

With the staff additions and possibly talent upgrades do you see KC making a strong run to supplant San Diego as AFC West Champions?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

Not right away, but down the road, perhaps.

Brian Wells (Los Angeles)

Hi Bill. Read the column every day. Do you honestly think the Jets can shut down the Chargers' passing attack the way Jets fans think they can? Looking at the schedule the Jets had this year, they haven't really played any teams yet that had as many great receivers as the Chargers. Also I think people tend to forget about how important Sproles and Tolbert are as pass catchers out of the backfield.

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

Thanks, Brian ... No, I don't think the Jets can handle the Chargers' passing attack. It is too varied. Revis can only cover one guy at a time. The Chargers will get their licks in.

Saul (San Diego)

Hey Bill, I want to start off by saying great blog I read it everyday. I'm wondering what kind of impact you think the addition of Weis and Crennel will have immediately on the chiefs. What kind of season do you think they will have in 2010

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

Thanks, Saul ... I think Weis and Crennel immediately make KC better. These are two legit NFL coaches. There will be an improvement, especially on game day.

jeremy (bristol)

is donovan mcnabb a future hall of famer

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

I'm not the biggest McNabb guy. He just never seems to be there when it counts the most (see his last two games) ... But the guy has won a lot of games and he could eventually get in.

Grahame (Vancouver)

While watching the game this Sunday, should I wear my Shaun Phillips jersey or my Shawn Marriman jersey?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

Whichever one is the cleanest.

Patrick D (North Carolina)

With all the focus on stopping the potent run game of the jets, are you a little worried of Mark Sanchez taking advantage?

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

The Chargers should only be worried about Sanchez if the Jets' run game gets rolling. If not, Sanchez will be under a lot fo presure and will be uncomfortable.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

Who will be catching balls in Denver next year? Marshall wants out, Royal disappeared, and it seems the discontent is spreading.

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

There will likley be big change in Denver. I don't see Marshall there. I think Royal will get another chance and I see Gaffney getting a chance to be a starter.

Guillermo (San Diego )

Hey Bill... Do you think the chargers are going to get a running back in the 1st round and if so who.... or do you think DT is more important need.. Thanks for all the great work....

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

I don't think the team needs a RB in the first round. I think DT is the bigest need. However, San Diego will be picking late in the first round so they will look for the best value regardless of the position.

Brian (San Diego)

Since the Chargers had the bye week last weekend, I paid close attention to the AFC games. I thought the Jets played extremely well and I respect their style of play. However, I am growing increasingly annoyed at the media hype surrounding the Jets and the lack of respect given to Chargers. After reading your blog post earlier this week, I know that you share my same frustrations. Why are Chargers being so overlooked despite their league-best 11-game winning streak? Is it simply an out of sight out of mind situation? Thanks Bill.

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

I don't get it, either. The Jets have been hot for three games. San Diego has been hot for three months.

mo (minnesota)

i have a concern with the chargers in the playoffs because they cant run the ball. what is your opinion

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

It has been an isue all season and it hasn't caught up to San Dieog yet. But it is a dangerous game to play.

jim woodworthr (eugene,or)

what do you think the chances are of brett getting to super bowl

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

If Minnesota's December problems are behind them, sure, they have a shot. IF AP runs well, Minnesota could be Super.

Tarek (NYC)

From what you here and see, is Revis better than Nami Asohugma?

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

I'm still sticking with Nnamdi. He is just as dominating. But he is on a worse team so Revis is getting all the love.

robb (Colorado)

Bill,What does your instinct tell you? Can Josh really get things rolling in Denver or will he be gone in a year or two? Thanks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Even though the team collapsed and he has had some issues with players, I think McDaniels is starting a decent program. He has some work to do, but I think he could on the right track.

Matt (Kingston, Ontario)

Which WR has the bigger game Sunday? Floyd or the Darrelle Revis blanketed Jackson? And do you see Jackson going over 35 yds this week which no WR has done this seasin against Revis?

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

I do see Jackson getting more than 35 yards ... But I think Gates is going to have a 100-plus yard game.

Patrick D (North Carolina)

I love the fact that Revis will be focusing on V-Jack. Wouldnt you agree that this now primes Gates to tear up the jets defense like he has whenever the Defense focused its attention on Jackson?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Yes, Patrick, without a doubt.

Jon (Tucson)

What are the Chargers going to do with Merriman after this season? Can they sign him to a reasonable deal considering his production? Trade him? They cant just let him walk like they did with Brees and Turner can they?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

I think the jury is still out, especially with the uncertainty of the salary cap. But I could see a scenario where he could leave.

scott (seattle)

Hi bill,Whats your take on having offsite training camps? The Seahawks have been horrible these past two years (their personnel probably doesn't help) but I don't think it is coincidential that they have had training camp in their taj mahal facility. Players get to sleep in their own beds, get distracted by their families, and weather in seattle has not been hot etc. They also don't bond in the college dorms. I think they should move it back to cheney, so they can get some team bonding etc. What's your take?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

It's an interesting point, but I think it is a team-by-team case. The Charegrs trained at home and went 13-3. KC trained out of state and went 4-12.

Ryan (San Diego)

Do the Jets even know who their opponent is? Just seems they've been talking about how great they are with their defense and run game all week and forget who they have to play

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

The Jets -- led by their head coach -- have done an excellent job of making it all about them. Let's see how the Chargers react.

Ilan (San Diego)

Hey Bill,I'm not too worried about the Jets rushing attack. San Diego allowed Chris Johnson to run for over 130 yards, and still destroyed them. It seems like San Diego is confortable letting runners get 8 or 9 yards until they are inside the 5 yard line and then pull off goal line stands. Seriously though, there doesnt seem to be a possibility the the Jets can seriously win this game.

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

For the Jets to win, I think, the Chargers would have to be very sloppy on offfense (three or four turnvoers) and inept on defense. That's a lot to ask for a team that has won 11 games in a row.

Jon (Tucson)

What are the Chargers going to do with Merriman after this season? Can they sign him to a reasonable deal considering his production? Trade him? They cant just let him walk like they did with Brees and Turner can they?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

Again, I think Merriman could be let go. The team may concentrate on other players, starting with V. Jackson. Yes, the Chargers have lost some players, but that is the byproduct of being a home-grown outfit.

julian (auerbach)

do you think if brett favre wins this years super bowl, will he come back to ty to pull an elway?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

I've stopped trying to figure out what he is going to do. I'm just enjoying watching him play.

Jeremy (Rancho Cordova)

Do you think if Raiders offered a 2nd rounder for Boldin the Cardinals would bite? I feel like an established, tough WR like Boldin who can make plays underneath would really open the passing game up in Oakland.

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

I think it may take more than a second-round pick. The Raiders have some decent WRs. They need to get help at OL.

joe (kc)

Why on earth are people constantly projecting the chiefs to draft on the o-line at number five overall? Extremely high for OL member, and with several possible defensive playmakers on the board, and the deep class for o-linemen, what makes okung worth the extra millions and millions a first rounder will make?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

The Chiefs need help on the line badly. Okung would be a nice start.

Ryan (San Diego)

@shawnemerriman: I wonder how are we considered the under dogs in this game idk...but i like it. This is from Merriman's twitter and I think he's right on. The way the media is covering this you wouldn't know if the Chargers had won 11 in a row or lost 11 in a row. I hope they use it as motivation

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

It looks like they are using it as motivation.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

Bill, how do you see the new staff using Jamaal Charles? Will he be a 20+ carries RB? Or, will they use him like a Hershall Walker and have him return kiccks line up at WR and play RB?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

I think he'll get 18-20 carries a game.

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

Hey folks, I have a meeting at 3 p.m. ET. Two more questions, thanks.

Justin (Durango)

Do you see McClain (LB from Alabama) falling to the Broncos? If not him, then who do you see them drafting at 10?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

That's who I have going to Denver right now. But things will change. Oakland could also grab him at No. 8. I think he is the type of player who will rise up draft baords as the draft approaches.

Bob (Salt Lake City)

How long is it going to take the Chiefs to even have a .500 team playing on the field? Did Carl Peterson really mess this team up that badly?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

I think, with a little luck, they can get there in 2010 if they make enough off-season improvements at the OL and on defense.

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Thanks folks, I had a great time. Enjoy the playoffs. Talk to you next week.
