Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Hi all. Hope you are having a wonderful afternoon. Let's hit it.

Finley (via mobile)

Yeah, I have a question about the LA Jaguars. When they move there and we relocate there as well, are you going to get season tickets for us or does your job not allow that? If we can't get the tickets, I guess I will just have to take solace in the fact that we'd be living in LA.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

The Jags are not going to LA, certainly not before 2013. And you need to come to terms with the fact we are staying put.

Ed (@ work ... shhhh)

Have the Titans decided not to pursue QB help in the draft now that VY has shown signs of life? I realize that it may not be a first round option right now, but perhaps in the third or fourth? Get a project with potential? (I didn't include second because we gave that to the Patriots last year.) I am still wary of VY though I now believe he CAN do the job if he applies himself fully to it, I wasn't sure before this year, I don't know that he will continue to work as hard as he did this past season. In fact, as a fan of the team I am angry that it took him this long to get his act together.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

You think before the CBA issues are resolved and before the Titans deal with free agency and before they've finished evaluating prospects pro and college that they know what they will do? I think they'd be wise to get a young alternative on board. But they don't know their plan yet.

Harish (Fargo ND)

Paul,Do you think colts have what it takes to stop the ravens running game? It seems like they have defended the run better this year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Absolutely. And thier biggest run defense could be a big offensive performance. Get up a couple scores, and the Ravens can't run as much.

brandon evans (pleasant view, tn)

does Ringer step up and take over some of the load with CJ (what looking like white moving on) or do the titans push him for all he is worth until he breaks down?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Someone else, likely Ringer, will get some carries next year. But I don't think they will shoot for the traditional Fisher 60-40 split.

Stuart (Virginia)

Is there any scenario you see Tennessee trading up to get a top 10 draft choice...I would love to see them somehow get Haden the CB from Fla. He's gonna be a stud and they need to address the other side opposite Finnegan. Or because they're so conservative it's never gonna happen.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

No. When'e the last time they went up? For Eddie George?

Adam Stites (Cypress, CA)

Hey Paul. Jack Del Rio is clearly in hot water in Jacksonville. The fans are not happy with him and the pressure to perform is obvious. In your opinion, is a playoff victory the only thing that could save his job?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

I will say playoff appearance. And the remaining money on his contract will be an issue next year too.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

By the way, All-Pro blog now includes a list of guys who got votes but didn't make the team:http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/8207/five-afc-south-players-are-all-pro

Jeremy Dodd (Moore, OK)

Was Albert Haynesworth a problem for the Titans coaching staff (not counting the Gurode Incident) before he went to the Redskins? If he was a problem does Mike Shanahan have the skills to deal with him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

He was lazy at times and outspoken. Nothing Shanahan and staff can't handle. Switch to 3-4 may be met with resistance, however.

Andy (DFW)

Let's say there is no new CBA. The Texans can bring back Ryans, Daniels, and Pollard due to them being restricted free agents. Do you think they should let Dunta walk and is Earl Thomas someone they should look at as a first round possibility?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Yes and yes. Unless Dunta's price drops significantly.

chris (indianapolis)

seems like an uncapped season could make next years Colts roster more stable, what with added restrictions on free agency. Good guys like Bethea get screwed, but at least we couldn't lose him to a rich team. Do you expect the Colts kung-fu grip on the AFC to loosen or tighten next season, with respect to the lack of cba?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Good question. Helps their competition too, is the thing. And the other three teams won't face any signing restrictions. Think it comes out roughly the same -- Colts keep their people and other three can add a bit more from the outside.

Mike Sando (NFC West)

I have a question for Tim Graham. Tim, how can I learn your writing style? Your blog is just amazing. I want to improve my own. Thanks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Tim was here last week asking for your help with spreadsheets!

Rex (Orange County, CA)

Assuming that the Chargers beat the Jets, do you think they would rather face the Ravens at home (who they lost to at home this season) or the Colts on the road (where the Chargers have always had Manning's number)? What is a better matchup for them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Forget the matchup. (And close wins over Indy don't amount to having the Colts' number.) Anyone wants the home game if they can get it.

Erick (Orlando, FL)

What do you think of the Jag's first round pick? Trade up or BAP? Do you think a quarterback would be BAP at that pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

They aren't trading up. Already down a second and needing a lot of help. BAP available, unless it's an OT or, perhaps, a LB.

Eric (Chicago)

The Ravens are gonna beat the Colts Paul. How you like that?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

Fine with me. Make it in a compelling game, OK? If you think I've got a big rooting interest, you're talking to the wrong guy.

Bob Elknins (dubberville, KY)

you think Peyton would ever coach for UT? or more of a pro coach?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Don't see him as interested in the coaching lifestyle or hours. And the best players often have a tough time coaching players who can't do what they did.

Brent (Texas)

What are the chances of the colts allowing Antoine Bethea to hit free agency assuming there is a cap? If there is no cap what will the colts tender him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Will tender him highest, I would expect. And he's worth it.

Massey (Columbia, TN)

With Pete Carroll going to Seattle and LenDale White free agency status up in the air (either restricted or unrestricted)...Could you see us trading him to the Seahawks? They have like 4 picks in the top 40 or something like that...They have a need for a RB and we need to pick back up a 2nd rd pick...What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I don't think the Titans are getting a second rounder for him. And if he's restricted he's only under contract for a year. Best case is someone signs him to an offer sheet, that would get TEN a second for a non-match. But I think Titans fans universally overrate his trade value, and the trade value of a lot of Titans.

Jason (Denver)

For most of the decade the contrast in football philosophies with the Ravens of the big bulky offense versus the smaller faster defense has turned out well for the Colts. Nationally many commentators are in love with the size of the Ravens offense versus the size of the Colts defense in this game but Ia??m not very concerned. My only real concern is tackling because thata??s the only way the Colts speed doesna??t neutralize the Ravens bulk; your thoughts PK?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Agree. Tackling is the big issue. If they lose, I bet we're talking about how they did not tackle well.

Edgar (Mexico)

Hey Paul,You are one of best Bloggers at ESPN. you add a little Spice to blog.Colts & Chargers became underdogs by Media this last week, becouse they didnt play. Are really Colts and Chargers Underdogs?or need to really play bad for them to lose?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Thanks pal. Where are they underdogs? I agree with the out of sight out of mind thing, happens too much and too easily. But while I've heard a lot of talk about close games, I don't see a lot of people picking Ravens or Jets and certainly not Ravens and Jets.

CJ2K (NASHVILLE)

What companies should I look to endorse me??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

Something that has to do with speed. High-speed Internat? FedEx? Shoes? I don't think you're getting national endorsements quite yet, however.

Lane Kiffin (USC Campus)

Finley is welcome to come with me. He is entitled to look for greener pastures like anyone else. No?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

He actually heard from Ed Orgeron before we knew you were moving.

Trevor (Denver)

Well Paul, I asked a couple times on different threads.... what is the mouse situation looking like at lucas oil stadium?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

The food there is no good anyway. Eat first, then go.

Kevin (Louisiana)

Any chance the Titan's take the Mays kid from USC at safety in the first round or too much invested in Griffen... Also, do you think Harper at safety is something he could be interested in to prolong his career possibly... he has excellent tackling abilities..

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

No. Harper is done in Nashville, I feel certain. And Griffin has some time. And Mays could be gone, no? Can't see two first-round safeties in such a short span.

Doug (Jacksonville)

Paul, it had been rumored heavily that the Jaguars would play in a London game in 2010, but Wayne Weaver stated they would not. Can you advise how this is determined?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

The league (read: commissioner) picks a game he likes for it, factoring in who's shown an interest, confers with owners and picks it.

Bob Elvis (Shebangs, MI)

Why dont you move to radio fulltime, i would like it better, you voice is better than your pen, in my opinion, any thought to it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

I will try to take that as a compliment. Feel free to tell The Zone that. A) Love my job. B) Radio is not banging down my door.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Disclaimer: Those looking for me to pick this weekend's games, the 2010 finishing order of AFC South or a team's first-round draft pick will leave here disappointed.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

I am listening to a new CD by a band called "Cage the Elephant." Not loving it.

clay (NASHVILLE)

What game this weekend do think will be the closest, and which has blowout potential?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Chargers have blowout potential. I think Saints-Cards will be close.

Finley ((Via Mobile))

I am confused with the CBA. Am I a restricted free agent or not? Cause coach Kiffen made me a nice offer. Will you exercise the franchise tag or not?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Simon is the franchise. But you are transition.

Brett Osborne (Indianapolis, Indiana)

Paul-I am amazed at the number of people who insist the Chargers have the Colts number. Last year, the Colts won one of the games in SD and lost the other in overtime. The year before, they lost on a missed field goal without Freeney(hurt early in the game), and at home by four points, without Freeny. I think the Colts match up fine with SD, your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Absolutely agree. If they advance and lose to SD it won't be because Chargers "have their number..."

plazmo (NASHVILLE)

What did you think about Nashville making the cut to possibly host a World Cup match

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Great development. Still another cut before it happens. And still the small matter of the US getting the Cup.

Christopher A. (Queens, NY)

Do you think Donald Brown, if healthy, will see a major amount of time in the playoffs? Maybe a 60/40 split with Joseph Addai seeing the majority?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Mostly Addai.

Mike (Jax)

Steven Jackson over MJD? How? Why?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Jackson is really, really good too.

Blake (Bay City, Tx)

if the texans let dunta walk should they use the money not wasted on him to sign someone like antoine bethea

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

I'd love for them to sign Bethea, he'd be great. But he may not be available.

Christopher Aviles (Queens, NY)

If the Ravens win this Saturday and go on to play San Diego and win that game they can potentially beat 3 or 4 Hall of Fame QB's. Is there any other team you can recollect that has overcome such a daunting journey to win it all?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

I'm certain there have been. Remember Kelly, Marino and Elway all in the AFC at the same time?

Caldwell (Indy)

First time at a colts playoff game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

I was at Jets 44, Colts 0 at Giants Stadium. Unbelievable.

Doug (Jacksonville)

David Garrard has had another year in Jacksonville, and his performance again wasn't that great, but the O-line was again in flux. Jaguars definately need to draft a QB to start learning/pressuring Garrard. Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

Get the next guy and get DG to slash his 2010 salary.

clay (NASHVILLE)

This division next year will feature three coaches that probably will need to win a playoff game to keep his job, who will be the odd man(men) out?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

Fisher is safe. Kubiak has a better team than JDR. So I'd put them in that order.

Larry (Washington, DC)

Hey PK. If you are the Ravens which scenario would you rather find yourself in with 2 minutes left in the game: A. Up 6 points, Colts have the ball on their own 20 or B. down 2 points, Ravens have ball on their own 20

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

A. I think you always have to take the lead and take your chances.

bob (elkins)

I beleive peyton will coach, look at him now, he is half the OC now. what makes you think he will not coach the way he reviews everything now

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Why if he's a multimillionaire and can do nothing or be on TV would he want to work crazy coaching hours?

Kevin (New York)

I think its brutal for Jack Del Rio to be on the hot seat next year. Jags have to play everyone in the AFC south twice, and also the NFC east. Thats 9 games against very good teams. (not including the Redskins just yet) Agreed?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Still, after "treading water" for seven seasons, it's time for him to breakthrough, no?

Reggie Nelson (Jax)

Am I done in Jacksonville?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Depends more on your attitude than film of 2009 I think. Are you going to admit you were bad and bust your butt? If not, bye. But it's hard to cut high picks so quickly.

Massey (Columbia, TN)

If Daunta Robinson is a free agent, do you think the Titans would make a play for him to start opposite of Finnegan? And I think Lendale White has a future in the league as a premier back...He has 4 years in the league and used primarily as an alternate so he doesnt have a lot of carries and the one year he was the premier back, he gained over 1000 yds...I think he would be a good pickup for any team looking for a RB!!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

The Titans are trying to get younger at corner, and he's not that answer. Will be interesting to see what comes of White.

Ross (TN)

Hey Paul, if they can learn to be consistent it seems the Titans finally have some quality receivers on the offense. Does Lavelle Hawkins have a future with the franchise considering Britt's good play as a rookie, and with Gage and Washington still under contract? He seemed to make some improvements this year, and let's not forget it took Mason three years to turn into an actual receiver.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

He's the fourth at best barring injury.

Sergio (Cancun)

Hey Paul!! will Stover stay as the Colts Kicker throughout the Playoffs? or just this weekend.? Did they put Vinatieri on IR?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Vinatieri is not on IR. But would be odd to change midcourse unless Stove is struggling or hurt.

Jonathan Simon (Houston)

Paul, if there is no CBA which teams (in the AFCS) do you think are more inclined to be more cautious with spending and which may take a chance on a guy or two they usually wouldn't?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

I don't think you're really going to see or feel much of a difference.

Ryan (San Diego)

How do the Chargers not have their number? They've won 4 of 5 against the Colts...I would say that's pretty telling. Also look at Manning's numbers against them, they are average

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Spreads: Six, four, two and nine. If you've beaten me four of five by that, are you somehow dominant?

Ed (@work ... shhhh)

How can you say the Front Office of the Titans doesn't know yet what they will do? I realize that they may not have the specific players they want to target finalized just yet, but surely they know what their needs are going into the offseason. True, they don't know what will come available in free agency, but though my question specified draft, what I meant was offseason, though I don't see many, if any, young qb options being available in free agency. Not any you'd want anyway.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

I think they expect to draft a QB. They don't have a draft plan yet, no. They've got a ton of free agents and like everyone else still scout the all start games, the combine, and workouts.

Dave (Canada)

If the Colts lose are you going on vacation or will you be jumping into draft coverage full-time?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

No vacation scheduled, but whenever they finish up, things ease up for me.

David (Houston)

In order, what do you see as the Texans top 5 needs heading into the offseason?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

FS, RB, CB, DT, and G...

Matt (IN)

PK, your post on the 10th anniversary of Wycheckls forward lateral inspired Graham to mention it as well. His link from his Facebook page incited a few Bills fans. Do you claim responsibility?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

I think people who think that throw was forward need eye exams and rules explanations.

Jimmy (Nashville)

How important is Vanden Bosch to the Titans. Will they bring him back?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

At the right price, I expect so. Importance depends on health and play of other defensive ends.

Frank Wycheck (Nashville)

PK, what he's trying to say is that you have a face made for radio. Sorry, man.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

I'm a writer. I don't have a face made for writing? We know I have a radio talent for helping your vocabulary.

Brent (oHIo)

I was at World Cup Qualifier@LP, & it was super quiet. If they get a game, will the crowd be more lively?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

They'd get games, plural. And fans of the countries in the games would come to Nashville, that's kind of the point. They'd be very loud. Houston and Indy are in this too. World Cup games are some of the best events I've ever attended.

Jason (Denver)

PK, Caldwell made a pretty big point about the 1s vs 1s last week during the bye. I know AI wouldna??t think its a big deal because its just a??practice mana? but is this a big departure from the Colts playoff preparations of the past?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Proud to say I got that conversation going at the Tuesday press conference. I think it shows they were concerned about finding or maintaining pace and tempo.

James (Indy)

Mostly Addai, for sure. But Brown should certainly be fresh, and has more speed and home-run-hitting ability than Addai. he could be an X-factor, no?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

You look for HRs, you're wiling to accept losses. And the Colts, as the column on the run game that will be up shortly points out, can't accept losses.

Harish (Fargo ND)

Paul,Is there a team in the final 8 you root for? or atleast be happy if they win?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

I root for good games, good story lines and good people. Always.

Kevin (Louisiana)

Which is more overrated in Titanland... Rod Hood's coverage ability or White's trade value

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Probably a tie. Excellent question.

Barney the Dinosaur (PBS)

Simon and I have been talking. I'll be infesting your home very soon.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Maybe I will go Charles Barkley on you?

Ty (Knoxville)

Well I'm not mad at kiffin one bit. However, I'm mad at UT for hiring someone with no connection to the university. I say let Kippy Brown have the job.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

You limit the pool. What if there is no great coaching prospect out there with UT connections right now?

Brian F. (Jax, FL)

Cage the Elephant has one or two good songs on that disc. I'm so disappointed with the music scene. I'm spinning old Elvis Costello. Surely you're a fan of EC.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Bad on first listen. Onto "Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons..."

Billy (tuberville)

I read to day that THe houston Texans are the only Franchise out of the big 4 sports in america not to be in the playoffs. HOw bout that, I can t beleive Kubiak is still there

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Aren't the also the youngest franchise in the big four in America? And are we really pretending there is a fourth? Gary Bettman been spotting spinning in your living room?

Matt (IN)

PK, I hate to correct you, but you brought it up and upset my stomach. It was actually 41-0.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Who was counting at that point. Was there to see who the Titans might have next. Would have been the Colts, I believe. Wasn't the Jets.

Kevin (Louisiana)

Is there colleagues of yours that are actaully hoping the Colts lose this weekend so the story can be about their decision to sit against the Jets? I know you don't like players and coaches who give the standards answers so I expect you will answer honestly and not give me that blah blah about professional intergity...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

We root for good stories to emerge. Not for stories we've predetermined.

Billy (tuberville)

if an elite Qb( bradford or jimmy C. is there at the titans 1st pick) how bad does Fisher want to taken them

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Not going to be there.

Finley (Via Mobile)

Is this chatting thing (every Thursday 3:00pm) a year round deal even in the off season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Pretty much.

Justin (Rockwall, TX)

What is your favorite NFL stadium?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Hard not to say Lambeau. Also really like Arrowhead. Others that jump to mind: Seattle and Detroit.

Lane Kiffin (So. Cal)

I came to see what your chat has to offer but found my dream chat elsewhere. While I was here I did chat with 100% effort.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Cameras caught every minute.

LenDale White (Nashville)

My old coach Pete could use a power back, don't be surprised if I end up in Seattle, PK.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

You don't have the freedom yet to go wherever you want, chief.

Darrik (Jax)

what if DG doesn't want to take a pay cut?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Pay cut or get cut, I say. Where is he going to find a better situation?

Christopher A. (Queens)

Do you see Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon being nearly as productive in the post season as in the regular season? Or... will Peyton Manning give the ball mostly to mainstays R. Wayne and D. Clark?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

He'll go where the coverage isn't. And it probably isn't as focused on Collie and Garcon.

Steve (Indy)

PK, you've said that you believe once the league goes to having no cap, they won't go back. Will we ever see the day of a rookie wage scale?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

I would think it'll be part of the next CBA.

Brandon Beasley (Monroe Tn)

Do you think the titans will have a good season next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

I really don't know what the team is going to look like, particularly on defense.

James (Indy)

PK, you are right on the money about the food at L.O.S. But the beer sure is tasty!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Haven't had the pleasure and don't expect I ever will.

Brandon (Jackson TN)

Cage the Elephant is pretty good I like Back against the wall.... on to my question. You think the Vols could lure Fisher away from the Titans? Just wishful thinking

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

Never. He's not interested in USC but he'd go to Knoxville? C'mon.

Mike (Cleveland)

So uh, how was Manning not a unanimous All-Pro selection as well? What homer voted for someone else?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

Probably the same people that voted for Brees or River for MVP, no? Don't have to be a homer to have a different preference.

Brian F. (Jax, FL)

You've given us Mindy Smith and now Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons. Considering you also reminded me of a lost gem with Bottlerockets, how do you get exposed to this music? In need to be in that circle.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

I am tied in. Bruce gives me suggestions.

Timothy (Indy)

Who's calling the Colts-Ravens game? Nantz/Simms or Wumbel/Dierdoff

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

Gumbel.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

Ok folks, been fun. Time to get a Primary Complaint in order for tomorrow. Hope you'll click on it and everything in the blog. Enjoy the games. See some of you in Indy?
