Chat with Chris Mortensen

Chris Mortensen
  (11:04 AM)

Good morning! I went 2-0 on last weekend's picks; 2-0 on Saturday, 0-2 on Sunday. Coaching stuff, lots to talk about, so let's get started.

Steven (Linlithgow)

Over/Under: 60 points in the Saints/Cardinals game

Chris Mortensen
  (11:05 AM)

I'd have to say over. I would have looked smart if I had said over 90 points on Cards-Packers, huh?

Matthew (Julian)

With the Redskins revamping the entire front office, the hire of Haslett and the 3-4 defense, the reputation of a shanahan o-line, and the availability of retaining Campbell; whom do you believe will be the number four pick in the draft if its not a Quaterback?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:06 AM)

I still think it has a chance to be a quarterback even while keeping Campbell. Otherwise, I haven't had time to jump into the draft. I would strongly bet that if Jake Locker (U. Wash) had declared for the draft, the Redskins would have made a great effort to trade into the No. 1 slot.

JARED (West Union IA)

What do you believe will happen to Brandon Marshall? Do you think that Brandon and McDaniels can rekindle their relationship?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:08 AM)

I believe it's over with almost zero chance at reconciliation. He will be traded.

Phil (Albany, NY)

Any news on the Bears OC opening. Is Martz the only candidate left?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:10 AM)

Bengals QB coach Ken Zampese interviewed. He is the son of Ernie Zampese, one of the all-time best O-coordinators from that Don Coryell lineage. I have heard Falcons QB coach Bill Musgrave's name, too. He would be excellent.

Dan (MN)

Since we don't have too many two way players in the NFL, how can the MVP not be either the defensive player of the year or the offensive player of the year?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:15 AM)

I believe there are occasions when the MVP and those Off. or Def. POY can be the same. But when I vote, it's distinct. Take Manning away from the Colts this year, I could see a sub .500 team. He was my MVP. I considered Drew Brees, as well. Chris Johnson was the best offensive player with a 2,000 yard season on an 8-8 team. I don't even understand the confusion, to be honest. Now if the Titans had become a playoff team, that would be different. Also, if the voting process allowed voters to list their choices in order, like 1-thru-5, then you'd have a point system. But each voter gets one vote for each award. No 2nd place, 3rd place, etc.

J Treehorn (Malibu)

Dr. Mortimer, whose defense has the edge: NO or AZ? How much of a difference does the Superdome crowd make on Saturday?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:17 AM)

I think the Saints have a slight defensive edge that could be enhanced by the Superdome crowd. Crowd noise at that level affects the offensive line - not just in pass protection but in run blockg, too. If the Cards' O-line is just a tick off, then that could be the difference in this game. The Saints also are back to being healthy on defense to the level they were the first half of the season. But you never count out the Cards and Kurt Warner, right?

Steve (Charlotte)

Whats your gut tell you abot John Fox in Carolina? Will they sign him long term once the labor issues are settled, or will he bolt in 2011??

Chris Mortensen
  (11:19 AM)

I believe it depends on the Panthers making a playoff/Super Bowl run. And even then, the gamble by the Panthers is John Fox will be a free agent coach and highly valued by any team looking for a new coach. I'm not factoring the labor issues into this picture.

Adam (Gettysburg)

Mort, it was reported on Espn that the Eagles would likely let at least one if not two of their QB's go this offseason. I know that Vick is likely out but what are the chances they would let either McNabb or Kolb go?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:21 AM)

Andy Reid is on record as saying McNabb is coming back and Reid is the boss of all things football. Now, with one year left on McNabb's deal, I am skeptical. I can see a trade. I also do not let see them trading Kolb, based on what I've heard, that they're pretty high on him. It will be one of the off-season stories we follow closely.

stacy (georgetown)

mort are you a really a dr.?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:22 AM)

Does "dr" stand for dumb retread? Then, maybe!

Xander (Philly)

Morti, the Bills often get criticized for their decisions. If Leslie Frazier, Russ Grimm, or Brian Schottenheimer become the next coach, how will the national media perceive the decision? And who is the best candidate of the three? Thanks!

Chris Mortensen
  (11:25 AM)

Personally, I would have a positive reaction on any of those hires. Think about all the great coaches in NFL history - Vince Lombardi was a coordinator; Tom Landry was a coordinator.... Bill Parcells was a linebacker coach. Last year's Super Bowl champ coach - Mike Tomlin. One year as a coordinator. Arizona's Ken Whisenhunt? Coordinaor. Sean Payton? Coordinator. Oh, Bill Cowher before he joined the Steelers? A coordinator/special teams coach. Get the picture? I like all 3 - Frazier, Grimm and Schottenheimer.

Will (Shaw AFB)

What has happened to Carson Palmer and the Bengals once-explosive passing game and is a Colts-Cowboys Super Bowl a reasonable possibility?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:27 AM)

There are a couple of theories about that. One is that the numbers dropped considerably when Chris Henry was injured, breaking his arm. (Obviously, before his tragic death.). The other theory is that Carson Palmer's arm wore down some - remember, some doctors recommended he have Tommy John surgery last year. Carson was pretty adamant that his arm is fine.

Jane (DC)

Are Seahawks players skeptical of Pete Carroll and that his "rah-rah" attitude will work in the pros?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:29 AM)

As Tedy Bruschi and others who played for Carroll have said, the "rah-rah" is misleading. He is energy. He creates a tenacious, fun, competitive practice atmosphere. I have heard that Pete won't be as sensitive to players' feelings - he is 58 now -and also that Pete will be more hands on with the defense than he was with Jets and Patriots in HC jobs. He always was an outsanding defensive coach.

Howard (Milwaukee)

I know that it's really stupid to look to next season already when we still haven't finished this season yet but with the Super Bowl being in Dallas next season is there concern about the Cowboys possibily having a home game in the Super Bowl since they will be a contender next season also?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:30 AM)

You know, that question has come up many, many times with Super Bowl host cities. And it hasn't happened yet.

Joe (St. Louis)

Any chance the Rams take a QB? They have taken DL like every year in the first -- shouldn't we get a franchise QB at some point?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:32 AM)

Yes, but the consensus right now is there is no true "franchise" quarterback in this draft. Lot of time to analyze those guys. You may even draft one later. But if Nebraska's Suh is considered the closest thing since Reggie White, maybe that makes some of those other D-line picks even a better investment.

Matt (Baltimore)

If the Skins switch to a 3-4, what does the mean for Haynesworth and Fletcher to name a few?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:34 AM)

Fletcher can adapt to anything. Haynesworth, that's interesting, because his attitude often can dictate his level of play. But if Haslett can get him to buy in, then Redskins defensive front can be pretty formidable.

Tony S (scranton, pa)

Mort how do you see the chargers going about all their free agents? ( floyd, jackson, merriman, sproles, dobbins) I know it may be an uncapped year , but who do you feel they keep?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:38 AM)

Most of those guys will be restricted free agents without a new labor deal. Vincent Jackson would be a priority. I haven't been able to really work on free agent situations in depth.

Jeff (NYC)

Mort, which underdog is most likely to pull an upset this weekend?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:41 AM)

I would say the Cowboys. But I give every underdog a shot. usually 3 of the 4 favorites win this weekend.

Robert Dold (Fairfax, Va)

I am wondering if you think College football will ever have a playoff system for Div 1?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:41 AM)

Off the NFL, but I do think there will be one. Timing? No idea.

Jared (West Union IA)

If you would have told me Denver would go 8-8 in august i would have done a back flip. The skid at the end of the year for the fourth year in a row leaves my head realing. Do you think this is a franchise on the up or is it declining?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:43 AM)

I would be more optimistic than pessimistic about the Broncos future. There is plenty of good, young talent.

Josh (wilson,nc)

whos better. chris johnson or adrian peterson

Chris Mortensen
  (11:43 AM)

Great question. If I really had to make that choice with the proverbial gun at my head, I would take Peterson.

Abbass Dia (LA)

why steven jackson isn't considred one of the top 3 running backs in the league

Chris Mortensen
  (11:44 AM)

I didn't know he wasn't. But glad you brought his name up. He was unbelievably good on a bad team.

Ben (Arizona)

If Kurt Warner does retire, will the Cardinals go into next season with Matt Leinart? Or could they possibly be players in the McNabb sweepstakes, while jettisoning Leinart to Seattle to go with Carroll.

Chris Mortensen
  (11:47 AM)

I think we'll speculate about Leinart for obvious reasons but it is a team within the division. Now if the Cardinals think Leinart is average or below average at best, why not do it? As for as McNabb, maybe that would be a fun deal. Throw in Boldin, get creative. But Andy Reid says McNabb will be with the Eagles. One last thought: Warner's friends may believe he'll likely retire but other think if he gives himself some down time, the idea of playing more with a gifted team and for big money will remain appealing to him.

Brandon (Milwaukee, WI)

What must the NFL do to keep the credibility of it's referee's? I'm an average Joe losing interest in this game due to the inconsistencies of the rulings in the game. What must the NFL do to keep me watching?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:51 AM)

Well, that's your choice. It's a game officiated by humans. If you're referring to the Packers' game, then I think you should follow the lead of the coaches and players and not place blame on officials. I talked to Mike McCarthy last night and he didn't bring it up once. Officials have a lot to watch - on the last play, when that ball pops loose that's where the ref's eyes must go.

mike (indy)

should the colts get rid of bob sanders.

Chris Mortensen
  (11:53 AM)

Bill Polian says Sanders is coming back. I thought maybe it was time to say bye-bye, but he's a heck of a player when healthy and the large portion of his money has been paid or is guaranteed. Until we hear differently, that's the assumption.

Jason (Northern MI)

Rex, and now Skip Bayless, both say Revis was robbed of DPOY. What is your take?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:56 AM)

Not robbed. It was the toughest choice for me but I voted for Woodson, who had nine picks, 3 for TDs, fumbles forced...different roles. I think Revis is the best corner in football. I thought Woodson was defensive POY. But, honestly, I would not have complained if Revis won the award and I went back-and-forth. And, once again, after watching the first round of playoffs, I did second-guess myself. But the voting is based on regular season and ballots in by noon after the last reg. season game.

Josh (Michigan)

Who should the lions take with the number 2 pick, and for the love of god dont name a reciver

Chris Mortensen
  (11:57 AM)

Best defensive player on the board. Can't give you a name yet. Their best case scenario would be if Rams took a QB or someone traded up to take a QB. Then it's a no-brainer - Suh.

Steve (White Plains, NY)

What do you think of the Jets letting Braylon Edwards walk and going after Brandon Marshall via a trade? Tannenbaum has shown he's not shy about making trades.

Chris Mortensen
  (12:01 PM)

I don't know why they would do that. I believe Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum probably should be the executive of the year but you can't keep trading draft picks for a receiver. They just need to get Braylon back to that level he was a couple of years ago. Mike Shanahan was going to do his best to dump Marshall after he went to the Pro Bowl last year, but got dumped himself. Now McDaniels wants to trade him. Tells you a lot, doesn't it?

Tom (kingst onontario)

Please Mort A bucs fan who is losing faith that this orginzation knows what they are doing. They have too pick defense with at least there top three picks this year. I have heard grumblings that they may draft an o lineman to protect "the franchise" qb . The problem wasn't there Oline he isn't a franchise QB. Mort what have you heard

Chris Mortensen
  (12:02 PM)

Haven't heard anything. When you're a team like the Bucs, you really follow this rule: Take the best player at any position of need.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

With Marshall likely out of Denver, Royal taking a big step back, and Scheffler apparently unhappy with McDaniels, what is going on with the Broncos passing game in the offseason?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:05 PM)

Transition means transition. Heck, with the way Jabbar Gaffney played in the last game, I wondered why McDaniels didn't use him more. I imagine another year in the system will help Royal.

Chris (MPLS)

You think Tony Dungy will ever coach again?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:06 PM)

As Tony says, you never say never. But as of now, he sounds like a guy who isn't interested. Who knows, a few years down the line? He's got a big family and has a full plate of responsibilities.

Sean (NJ)

With how the Dolphins were scorched by TE this year is it safe to say they should be thinking D' primarily LB or DT/DE in the draft? I know we need a WR but Parcells is not the type to spend a big pick on one right?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:08 PM)

I think there was a reason Paul Pasqualoni was fired as defensive coordinator. I would expect more defensive front players, which includes linebackers.

Jason (Baltimore)

Dont you think the emphasis on Flacco throwing for just 34 yards is overblown? The game was over in the first quarter. Is he banged up? Yes. Are his mechanics off? Sure. But the guy threw for 3,600 yards and 21 TDs. People make him out to be Trent Dilfer 2.0

Chris Mortensen
  (12:10 PM)

Yeah, it's probably overblown. I also think the Dilfer thing is overblown, too. The 2000 Ravens had the best defense in NFL history in my opinion so they were very conservative. I do know as soon as Dilfer threw that perfect TD strike to Stokley to make it 10-0, that Super Bowl belonged to the Ravens. Flacco had a very good 2nd season with average receivers, at best. He is hurt. That's clear. That affects your mechanics.

Younger78 (Cali)

Say the Cards lose this game and Warner retires. Where would you place him among the great QB's. Also will he be in the HOF?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:11 PM)

I say Warner is a Hall of Famer. I don't know where to place him among the great QBs. Top 15-to-20, off the top of my head.

Nate (madison)

The guy addressing the officials, I don't think he meant the last play. More the plays where Fitzgerald plowed over Woodson enroute to TD's, no call. The roughing the passer call on Jenkins that wasn't roughing and he was held to begin with. The helmet to helmet hit on the overthrow in overtime.

Chris Mortensen
  (12:13 PM)

I don't know that the ball was in the air when Fitzgerald ran over Woodson. But my bigger point is, I don't believe officials decided this game and I don't think Packers' players & coaches believe that.

barry (illinios)

Chris you think the Rams keep the 1st over all pick or trade for more picks

Chris Mortensen
  (12:14 PM)

The Rams probably would prefer to trade for more picks.

Michael (Chicago)

How confident are you in the Chargers this weekend and them winning it all?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:16 PM)

I think the Chargers beat the Jets but if it's close at halftime, watch out. Winning it all? I probably would pick the Chargers to win the AFC but the Colts should be right there, too. (I don't care about their past head-to-head meetings). I believe any team from the NFC will be up to the challenge in the Super Bowl.

Daniel (NYC)

What do you make of Brian Schottenheimer turning down the Bills (per Schefter's report)? does it say more about his happiness with the Jets or the unattractiveness of the Bills' job?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:18 PM)

Brian Schottenheimer has a very young family - he's a great family man, too - and he has a young quarterback he's excited about. He's young and job opportunities will come his way beyond this year.

charles (minot ND)

should the vikinings go after a quaterback in the draft or play the guessing game with favre?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:19 PM)

Minot, huh? Had a good friend's son stationed there in the Air Force. I think the Vikings will go with Tavaris Jackson if Favre doesn't come back.

Sean (NJ)

Is there any news of who the dolphins are looking at to fill thae Defensive Coord. position? I thought I read somewhere that a person who worked with Parcells was being considered just can't remember his name now, anyway any news?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:20 PM)

Haven't had time to work much on that but Todd Bowles is one name.

nick (salt lake)

Why all of a sudden are all the "Experts" ditching the teams that were dominant throughout the season...Saints, Colts, Vikings....Saints and Colts let a lot of guys rest and the Vikes had a few issues. Three weeks ago people would almost certaintly be putting Colts vs. Vikings/Saints in the bow...

Chris Mortensen
  (12:20 PM)

We get bored and we forget. That being said, there is a history of one team playing on the first weekend of making it to the Super Bowl.

Andrew (Atlanta)

Do you think Holmgren and the Browns will retain Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn or will one or both be gone by the beginning of the regular season?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:23 PM)

Holmgren's Seahawks team got tore up by Anderson and he mentioned that when he took job. I think they will listen to offers or stay the status quo if nothing presents itself.

Alex (Evansville, IN)

Mort where do you see richard seymore landing. centiantly not in new england after they dropped him off in the wastes of raider land, right?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:24 PM)

I can see Al Davis blocking Seymour from becoming a free agent. He gave up a first round pick in 2011 for him.

Chris Mortensen
  (12:25 PM)

I am way over on time. Thanks for making it fun. Sorry I can't get to a lot of questions. Follow me on Twitter.com/mortreport...ESPN Radio show on Friday night @ 9 ET (espnradio.com on line)....Saturday Countdown @ 11 ET....Sunday Countdown @ 11....God Bless!
