Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

I'm back!! Sorry for the break last week, had to head west to see some guys play. Let's get to work."You shut up you little potlicker or I'll put you into the microwave".

Andy C (Phoenix)

With Amare playing reasonably well and the Suns 4th/5th/6th in the West, what does Suns management do? A trade before year end is hard for fans to swallow, but then again he could walk at year end...

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

There is risk in every move. But they should be able to keep Amare, leaving Nash is difficult, not to mention the great weather and the community in general.

ChiTownFan (Chicago)

Out of Philly, Houston and Chicago, where is the most likely destination for McGrady?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I have no idea.

Vince (Orlando)

Is this team really better off without me, or do we just need more time to play together and work out the kinks?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I'm inclined to think the latter.

Wrigs (Chi-Town)

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tightGonna grab some afternoon delight. My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right. Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night. When everything's a little clearer in the light of day.And you know the night is always gonna be there any way.Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

:)

Uncle Leo (NYC)

Thorpy Hello! Are you hearing any trade talks involving Boston?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

No, but I typically don't anyway.

Steve P. (Atl)

david, are you a facebook guy who links interesting articles you see to your profile?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I do on occasion, but they are normally not about sports. I'm at David B. Thorpe on Facebook for any that are interested.

Josh (Wilson, NC)

Do the miami heat have a fighting chance to win the NBA title

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Only if they get into fights in each series and get the other teams best player ejected without losing any of their core guys.

Troy (Jorts) Von Beck (Iraq)

What are Dwyane Wade's chances of being the MVP of this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

See my answer above-it applies here too.

Martin (Virginia)

Can Gallanari get better or Wilson Chandler improve his ball handling? And why won't the Knicks mover Jordan Hill for cap relief?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Yes and yes, of course. I wouldn't quit on Hill yet, give him and that staff more time.

Elias (Dayton, OH)

Good morning David,What do you think of Jawad Williams? He has produced for Cleveland when he has been given minutes. At 6'9 220 lbs. he has been playing the two through four, knocking down open jump shots, finishing inside, passing well and defending well. Do you see him staying in the Cavalier's rotation when Jamario Moon returns?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Honestly, I never think of him.

Jeremy (OKC)

Who you like better, Ibaka or Mahmini?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Ibaka!!

Bill (Providence)

Rondo is the best PG in the East? Yes?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Yes.

Bryon (Indianapolis, IN)

A.J. Price has been really impressive as of late. Is he a starting NBA point guard in the future? What do you think of Jim O'Brien as a coach? His system?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

He has had a great 7 day run. Let's see how Price does through January. O'Brien is a coach's coach, does things the right way. His roster is bare, mostly.

Adam (Lansing)

As a pistons fan, I need help.Any chance Utah would consider swapping Boozer and Kirilenko for Hamilton, Prince, and Brown? For the Jazz, it gives them some relief and gets them closer to the cap, while creating a really strong starting line-up, that is at least consistent. For the pistons, well, it drops Hamilton's albatross of a contract and basically, switching Kirelnko for Prince isn't much of a difference

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Boozer is too good for "cap relief" only.

Troy (Arizona)

Do the hawks have a high chance of making the eastern conference finals?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I'd say, 4 chances in 10.

Noah R (Miami,Fl)

Do you think wade will stay or leave?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I've been trying to get my brother Mike out of there and back here for years, and have failed miserably. It's a hard place to leave.

Tyler (Hampstead, NH)

Love your analysis Mr. Thrope, you're one of the best. What's your take on the Grizzlies?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Thanks. Story of the season, supplanting the Kings. I love how they all seem committed to playing together and the right way. They are very, very interesting. Imagine Tyreke Evans on that squad, which should have happened.

Mike (Fargo)

You previously said you were going to update your Sophomore rankings in late December, I can't seem to find it though, is it up?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Coming tomorrow or Friday.

Terry (Madison)

David, where have you been lately? I've missed you.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I've been here!! Well, I went to Sacramento and Oakland to see some games there last week. I should be here for my chats for at least the next 4 or so.

Clark (Durham, NC)

How do you think Kevin Martin and Tyreke Evans will do playing together?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

I think Evans will have a little more adjusting to do, but that's common for a rookie. I think they will like playing together, and I'm sure Paul Westphal will love it.

Glenn (Memphis)

David ? Thanks for answering Griz questions when we stunk. Will the Griz make the playoffs this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

I'd guess yes.

Adriel (LA)

Do you think Kobe should keep playing through these injuries or just take a break?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Depends on what they are. If it's just a matter of pain, yes. If there are chances he'd be creating permanent injuries, no.

Jay P (Canton MA)

Need help settling a major argument that broke out between me and my NBA junky friends. Who is the more talented player/who has the higher ceiling....Anthony Randolph or Michael Beasley?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Beasley in both categories, but his ceiling is not much higher than AR's.

Matt (Cleveland, OH)

Mr. Thorpe!, we're almost at the halfway point, who're the favorites?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Exactly who we expected.

Clark (Durham, NC)

Which college players are next on your breakdown list and is a breakdown of Solomon Alabi's game coming?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Willie Warren, the kid from Wake, and the guy from West Virginia. Do you know who I'm speaking of?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

I think it will be up on Friday.

Kurt (NYC)

Hey David, Love your work and its nice to see someone always put family first. Denver doesnt seem like it will win the title as is. What if they swing for the fences and trade Nene and JR smith for Chris Bosh? Toronto gets some players and Denver beats everyone to the summer of 2010. If Bosh still walks Denver has cap space to go after someone else.

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Trading anyone but Melo for Bosh is a grand idea.

Greg (Denver)

Do you think Philly would really consider an Iguodala/Dalembert trade for McGrady's expiring contract? Will that potential cap space really be enough to fill the void created by the loss of both guys?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Any move to save money is on the table for many teams. i don't know much about Philly's situation.

JD (NY)

David, I know you work with Courtney Lee, and he clearly has the tools to be a good player. But he doesn't seem to be aggressive enough or have that fire that is gonna push him to be great. Am I wrong, or is it something you are constantly telling him? That he has to take the ball to the hoop more and be more aggressive on the court?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Actually, I feel exactly the opposite. That is a team of black holes (not including Brook), so it needs a playmaking guy. Lee is trying to do that, but still needs to be opportunistic as a scorer.

Braden (LA)

DJ Thorpe Nasty (that's your rapper name, btw), would Lebron be a perfect fit for the Clippers, or would Lebron be a perfect fit for the Clippers?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Better than being DJ McPasty. LeBron would be a perfect fit anywhere, because any team would make it so.

Paul (Arizona)

Tips on how to jump higher?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Lose weight. Jump all the time. Run sprints.

Evan (MN)

Coach Thorpe,Knowing we will not see Rubio playing in the league at least until 2011, do you trade his rights, or wait 1 more year to see what happens? Also what about Jefferson x Kevin Martin trade scenario.. Thanks!!

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I've heard that numerous times. I doubt either team moves their guy until at least 2011.

Sachikevious (Greece)

Do you see some Steve Nash in Stephen Curry? What's his ceiling????

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Fantastic eye my friend. That is exactly what I told Bucher the other night in Oakland. He's the perfect guy to learn from Nash and fill that role.

Fendron (Cambridge)

You're not too informal are you? How much do they pay you to give absolutely no effort? Not to mention, it seems like questions are chosen with an extreme bias.

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Actually, I volunteer to give these chats. So take that Fendron.

Chad (Duluth)

Hi David. Do you see John Wall playing the 2 at all, or will he be strictly a PG in the NBA. Also, the Wolves need to move Big Al or Love...at this point who has more value on the market?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Wall is a 1, but he could play 2 next to a little guy if necessary. But his best spot is pg. Love may have more value because he's so cheap compared to Al for 2 more years.

Jesse (Ferndale, MI)

I really like Jarvis Varando's game, why he doesn't get much draft buzz?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Because guys like me don't like him so much.

Steve (Sydney, Aus)

Yi MIP??

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Not close, as of now.

Tom (UK)

Thorpe, your analysis on Wall was right on. It's amazing how you can crystalize a player in so few words, but we all thank you. How did you break his game down?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Thanks. It wasn't so hard, he's pretty easy to see. I downloaded every game he has played into my laptop from Synergy, then watched all of them on my flight to California.

Dave (NJ)

You may have no idea where TMAC will be traded to, however, regardless of where he winds up, do you expect him to still be able to play at the same high level we are all accustomed to? He is less than a year removed from micro-fracture surgery.

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I think Tim Grover is a smart and honest man, and he says that T-Mac is ready to go. I'd listen to him.

FamousJuan (Orlando, FL)

Thorpedo! I'm not willing to pony out the dough for Insider Access, so I depend on these chats to maybe get a question in! What's the trade news for Miami? Are we making a deal before the 2010 bonanza? Are O'neal, Haslem, Chalmers, or Beasley (plus supporting fluff) getting traded to help Miami beat Atlanta in the first round?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

That's interesting Juan, because all that can be found inside espn.

Younger78 (Cali)

Do you think the Wolves would really trade Love? I don't see them letting him go.

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

For the right deal, sure.

Jim (Missoula)

Do you notice the trend for bigger points in the nba...I think kids that are tweeners in college are starting to play the point more in preparation for nba careers...lots of 6'3 to 6'5 point guards

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

You mean like Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson, Jonny Glynn, Eric Maynor?

Lee (Fargo)

Is Flynn's future role going to end up as a scoring bench guy like Terry or Nate Robinson or will he figure out how to run a team? He dribbles way too much without a purpose for my liking.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Unless he changes a lot, he's a scorer off the bench to my eyes. A dynamic one at that. But he can change into more pass first guy if he wants to.

Anthony (SA,Tx)

Hey Thorpe, can John Wall being a player that can be built around, or do you see him as a secondary player on a team that has say someone like Al Jefferson as the main guy!

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Can you build a team around Paul or Williams? If so, then you can around a Wall.

Dave (Alaska)

I live in an abandoned school bus because I shun traditional social mores. However, I am getting very hungry. Please curb my pain by telling me what piece the Mavs are missing to compete for a championship.

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Dave, how about we start by talking about what you are missing?

Tyson (Iowa City)

What are the hardest defensive lessons for young players to learn coming out of college? I would think fundamentals like keeping your hands up, anticipating, talking, head on a swivel, but I would also assume most college coaches preach this to their kids so how come rookies are generally so bad at defense??

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

The hardest thing is getting them mentally sharp and aware. So much going on that they miss.

Sachikevious (Greece)

Thorpedo, next time you're in OakTown let me know, I'll buy you a beer! What pieces did you see as keepers for the Warriors?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Thanks, but I gave up beer 15 years ago and rarely drink anything but iced teas when traveling. I did enjoy a meal at the Elephant Room after the game though. Curry is a keeper for sure. Biedrins is fine. Randolph has to be developed better than what he is getting.

Lefkohoma (Greece)

When playing man do you teach your players to force sideline or middle and why?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Always sideline-cuts the floor down to a smaller size and limits passing options.

Matt Roberts (Texas)

Thanks for the chat! Your salary should be doubled! George Hill looks much improved this year. Is he starter material or a career backup?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

I think he can be a starter. I'm a big fan.

Alex (Chicago)

Why has Marreese Speights playing time been dipping. Philly isnt winning this year so why not develop him.

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

I'm not sure at all. In that draft, I thought the two biggest mysteries were Speights and Randolph. I still do.

Michael (Milwaukee)

Can Wall and Jennings co-exsist if Milwuakee hits the jackpot?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

It's not the best option.

Mike (KC)

Better rebounder as a Rookie - Taj Gibson or DeJuan Blair?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Blair. But kudos to Gibson, he has been a pleasant surprise.

justin (toronto)

Do you think the Raps will trade Bosh by the deadline, If so where will he end up? and will the Raps be able to get fair value back for him?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I do, and I have no idea.

Chris (Boston)

Have you seen Jeremy Lin from Harvard? Any chance his skills translate to an NBA game?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Not yet. I don't watch college games at all until March. Except for the guys I'll be breaking down each week.

John (Dallas)

Can you explain the sudden drop-off in Devin Harris' productivity this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

He is not happy, that much it obvious.

jonny (clayton)

are you gay?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

No, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Mike (Dallas)

whats your take on dirk nowitzki? mabe the most dangerous big man evar? better than shaq?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Shaq is the most dangerous, but Dirk is the best 7 foot shooter ever.

Ken (Memphis)

What does Sam Young end up doing in this league?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Energy guy off the bench. He's been a positive for Memphis.

George (FL)

Who's the most underrated team in the league? Player?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Good question. What do all of you think? I'd go with San Antonio and probably Horford.

Eric (Sactown)

Even if Evans #s drop to around 18/ 6/5 with Martin...ROY?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Yes, he may score less but will likely push his assists up.

Marc (Big D)

Any thoughts on James Johnson? He looks lost every time he gets in a game.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

It's in my latest rookie report.

Kevin (Chicago)

Can Rudy Gay be had this year? Hinrich and a 1st rounder?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

I think someone has to go after him hard.

Bill (Sactown)

David my man I read your quotes in the Sac Bee about Evans. Did you see Stan van miserable say the same things in todays paper?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

No, but he's a smart guy so I'd follow whatever he's saying.

Eric (Sactown)

Bobcats and Nash!

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Better answer perhaps. Well done.

JimmyZ (PHX, AZ)

Have you ever seen a player catch an airball, then thinking it went in step out of bounds to inbound like J.R. Smith did vs. the Kings? I have only seen that on outdoor courts with no netting.

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

I've never seen it's equal.

Keary (DUMBO, Brooklyn, NY)

Mixed opinions on Gallinari among your ESPN peers (e.g., Hollinger's "1 trick pony" label. But I watch Knicks a lot and yes skill set is still developing but I see some timely (clutch?) blocks helping on interior D and some hard drives to rim. Your thoughts? Thanks as always, Coach T.

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

I think he will get so much better then next few years.

John (Dallas)

This morning I read a story about Utah wanting Dallas to include Beaubois in a deal for Boozer. Can you give me one reason I shouldn't jump off a cliff if this happens?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

You own the rights to Nick Calathes. He's the real deal.

Pristo (NYC)

Why are point guards used so differently overseas than here?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Fantastic question, and totally accurate. They just are. But it's why we can't look at Rubio's numbers and think that he couldn't score here either. Jennings is proof of what I'm referring to.

James (MT)

Who's been the most under-rated rookie this year, so far?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Considering I rate the rooks each week, I hope the answer is...nobody.

Sam (Oakland)

Coach, I saw you at a Warriors game last week. What's your in person take on Curry?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Very gifted player. His helpside defense, where he would leave his man and rush to cut off Evans going right, changed the game.

dmac (LA)

doesnt George Hill remind you of Ariza?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

No. Corey Brewer does.

Eric (Chicago)

Thorpe, what do PGs in Europe do differently than in the US or vice versa?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

It's much more about setting up teammates over there.

Jerry (Texas)

Is Derrick Rose an All-Star this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Probably not, but he's been coming along really well lately.

Younger78 (Cali)

If you had a summer with Andrew Bynum, do you think you could get him to play better defense and position himself better? I'd be impressed if you could do it. Seems more of a maturity/energy issue.

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

I doubt it. If Chief 10 Rings can't do it, I probably couldn't either.

Nate ((NYC))

Thorpe, how come you only know how to respond in one-liners? Wish Hollinger was in!

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Is he coming on tomorrow? I hope for your sake he is. Mine too!

Adam (Philly)

have you seen cole aldrich play? he may not be a scorer, but hes an amazing defensive center who could anchor an NBA team right now. what do you think of him?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

His lack of agility concerns me greatly, but I've not studied him much. I'm sure I will be soon.

kirk (chicago)

Sweet Seinfeld reference earlier. Love that show. Can Derek Rose be the best player on a championship team? Thanks.

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Great question. I'm not into that idea so much. Who was the Spurs best player in their wins? Duncan overall, but both Manu and Parker carried them through some series. Ditto Boston. He can be a top 3 guy, and that's all that matters.

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Great question. I'm not into that idea so much. Who was the Spurs best player in their wins? Duncan overall, but both Manu and Parker carried them through some series. Ditto Boston. He can be a top 3 guy, and that's all that matters.

Dan (Canton (OH))

Can Tebow start at QB in the NFL? If so, should the Brown's draft him if he's there in the 2nd?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

I have to answer this. He can, but only in a hybrid system. He's not a dropback passer.

Josh (Knoxville, TN)

Sportsnation doesn't think Tim Duncan is a Top 10 player anymore? He's #2 in PER this year. Can you name 10 better players than Timmy? This question can be answered in 10 words or less. :)

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

No.

Ludwig Hasbauer (Germany)

who's the player that reminds you most of lebron james? is there anyone who plays with his style?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

He's a one of a kind guy, like Magic and Bird and Jordan.

Younger78 (Cali)

Kevin Love, will he ever be an all-star? Seems like a stretch but the guy keeps improving and plays so smart.

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

He's a 5 time all-star. Or more.

Alex (Boston)

By ditto Boston, you mean KG was the best player but pierce and allen, and rondo carried them sometimes

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Right.

Christopher (St. Paul, MN)

David, will Rubio be a star in the NBA or just another highly-regarded Euro who didn't pan out?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

NBA star I'd guess.

nick (salt lake)

is granger a star? or is he a good number 2...ala scottie pippen. i say trade murphy....good stats don't make him a good player

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Granger can be a star, yes.

Bryan (Ohio)

How long do you wait on a player to develop before you don't bother picking up the option on his rookie contract? (hint: I'm looking at you, R. Lopez)

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Three years.

C (Charlotte)

Do you get a chance to see Gerald Wallace play? He has been great this year on both sides of the floor, changing games with rebounding, blocking and scoring. Is he an All-Star this year in your mind?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Without doubt.

Ryan (Florida)

Bird a one of a kind guy?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

How many 6'9 power players can pass brilliantly, shoot exceptionally well with range, be ultra tough and grab lots of rebounds, and be totally dedicated to the craft and the team? I say none.

David Thorpe
  (1:01 PM)

Gotta go. 900 questions. Thanks to all and have a great rest of the week and weekend. Be safe!!
