Chat with Beano Cook

Beano Cook
  (3:11 PM)

Good afternoon. Sorry for the slight delay. I am ready for your questions.

Chris (Charlotte, NC)

Who does the NCAA go after UT or USC for Orgeron's calling spring enrollees at UT and telling them not to attend classes?

Beano Cook
  (3:12 PM)

I don't know how to answer that. No call should be made of that type... it is a disgrace if it is proven to be true.

Rodney (Indiana)

Do you think Brian Kelly has suddenly been overshadowed in the past week? Were you surprised by Pete Carroll leaving USC?

Beano Cook
  (3:13 PM)

I was not surprised that Carroll left USC because he left town before Wyatt Earp got there. I don't know if Kelly is overshadowed but Carroll will be done in a day or two from the headlines. Kiffin will be in the headlines for a while. Kelly has assembled his staff and is ready in South Bend.

Amanda (Eglin AFB, FL)

If you were the UT AD and you could choose between Will Muschamp and Gary Patterson who'd you pick?

Beano Cook
  (3:14 PM)

Al Golden of Temple. That guy led the Owls to a bowl game and Temple was ahead of UCLA for much of it. He can coach.

Terry (Los Angeles)

Thoughts on what happened at South Florida? Leavitt really built the program...

Beano Cook
  (3:15 PM)

What have you done for me lately in college football. If South Florida went 11-2, there would not be any problem.

Randy (Austin)

Hey Beano, as a College Football historian, can you think of a situation where a QB who starts for 4 years, works is way to a National Championship game as his last game... then get knocked out 5 plays in!!! Wow I really feel bad for McCoy, just wanted to get your thoughts?

Beano Cook
  (3:16 PM)

No, I can't. I don't know if that scenario has happened. Players have been injured in big games. I felt badly for McCoy and his teammates.

STEVE (LAKEPORT,CA)

Will USC win more than 10 games next year?

Beano Cook
  (3:16 PM)

No.

billy (seattle)

why does it seem like you are so anti Alabama ROLL TIDE get over it all you did is praise tebow all year and gave no credit to bama look where they are at now

Beano Cook
  (3:17 PM)

Ridiculous...your remark is ridiculous. Of course I gave Alabama credit all year long. I did praise Tebow, so. Mark Ingram earned the Heisman and I praised him. I have praised Nick Saban. Enough.

Mark (Atlanta)

What do you think of the rumors about Fulmer coming back?

Beano Cook
  (3:18 PM)

Tennessee athletic Mike Hamilton refuted those rumors. I recommend Al Golden of Temple. Muschamp's name has been thrown out there, as has David Cutcliffe. We should know a replacement by the end of the weekend, if not before.

Danny (Schaumburg, IL)

Beano - Thanks for all your wisdom over the years. I'll never forget in preseason, 1988 you choosing Notre Dame over West Virginia for the National Championship that year and you were right on! Do you see ND making a BCS bowl game next season?

Beano Cook
  (3:20 PM)

Actually I picked West Virginia to win the title before the season. However, the reason I did not pick Notre Dame was the fact there was no direct flight from Pittsburgh to South Bend. I hate to go to South Bend through Chicago. You can drive from here to West Virginia. I originally did pick Notre Dame, so in a way you are right.

Caligator82 (San Diego )

On your podcast with IM, I heard you say that Urban Meyer will never coach again a Florida? Why do you think that?

Beano Cook
  (3:21 PM)

Just a prediction. I just don't think he will, but I hope that I am wrong. That is what we do in this business, make predictions and then fans hope we are wrong.

Ingrid (Hawaii)

Are you surprised the Peterson from Boise State did not become buddies with USC? You would think that USC would want to milk his textbook creativity and ability to recruit like a common dairy cow.

Beano Cook
  (3:22 PM)

Number one, I am surprised that some school has not gone after Chris Petersen. He gets a big discount on his potatoes.

Vol Fan (Tennessee)

What ever happened to loyalty in sports? One year and out???

Beano Cook
  (3:23 PM)

It doesn't exist that much...I agree with you and it is a sign of the times.

Finn (Arkansas)

Please tell me Houston Nutt would not entertain a job with UT. He might as well iron Ed O's shirts while he's at it.

Beano Cook
  (3:24 PM)

It is hard to say. I think he is happy at Mississippi but I have no idea if he would jump ship. It is a revolving door this postseason.

Rick (Alabama)

How many titles will Nick Saban win?

Beano Cook
  (3:25 PM)

He is going to win another one, maybe two if he stays another six years. Alabama is one of the early favorites to win the national title next year. I will give my early pick at the end of the chat.

JC Jaramillo (Miami,fl)

What do you think the NCAA is going to do ,in order to stop coaches from opting out of their contracts , and going to other schools, like changing underwear

Beano Cook
  (3:26 PM)

Nothing. It is none of their business...what can they do. Speaking of nobody's business, members of congress, of all people, have no reason to complain about what football coaches make. It is called capitalism.

Joseph (Georgia)

True or False: Urban Meyer will benefit most from the UT/USC situation

Beano Cook
  (3:27 PM)

False. I don't know how he benefits one way or another. His biggest problem is Alabama, not Tennessee or Georgia.

Frank (Johnstown)

Hi Beano. The Big East gets little respect. ESPN even got their bowl record wrong in their tabulation of conferences in bowl games. What can the Big East do to get better publicity? Thanks

Beano Cook
  (3:28 PM)

Number one, it is the weakest of the BCS conferences and I don't see how that is going to change. The teams in the league have to do a better job of scheduling tougher non-league games.

David (HI)

Major Harris, for WVU, hurt his shoulder 3 plays into the 88 championship game with ND. He played through it but couldn't throw the ball. That's the closest to Colt Mccoy that I could think of

Beano Cook
  (3:28 PM)

That is a very good point, excellent in fact. Thanks for reminding me of this.

jose (tucson)

If players have to sit out a year, why shouldn't coaches. The whole system stinks and players should strike.

Beano Cook
  (3:29 PM)

No comment. It is not a very insightful observation.

ben (Reno)

Beano, Loyalty in sports? are you kidding! the standard for colleges is " what have you done for me lately" not loyalty. Coaches know that and will always opt for the best position.

Beano Cook
  (3:30 PM)

It is called capitalism. Is there anything wrong with a coach trying to better himself and make more money?

Bren (California)

Beeno, I disagree. We have a situation where once a kid goes to a school he is for the most part locked in- BY NCAA RULES. If he wants to go somewhere else he is penalized. why should coaches have more latitude than the players?

Beano Cook
  (3:32 PM)

That is the way the system is. Players go to college to play, not for the coach. If they did not have to sit out for one season, coaches would raid other schools regularly and there would be real havoc.

gerry (florida)

How's the Gilbert, Newton backfield going to look for Texas the next couple years?

Beano Cook
  (3:33 PM)

We will find out. Texas will be very good, but how good we just don't know. Gilbert regrouped in the second half against Alabama, so that is a positive sign.

Terrence (Chicago)

How do you think Tommy Tuberville will do at Texas Tech?

Beano Cook
  (3:34 PM)

I thought he might be interested in the South Florida. He got the offer from Texas Tech and he didn't want to take a chance of waiting to hear from South Florida. I think he will do fine in Lubbock.

Alex (LA)

Do you believe the timing with Kiffin? He assembled several staff members pretty quickly?

Beano Cook
  (3:35 PM)

I don't know. It is fair to assume most assistants would come with him. The new coach will keep some of Kiffin's former assistants to make sure there is continuity.

David (Texas)

ow good are Texas's chances of keeping Muschamp?

Beano Cook
  (3:36 PM)

We will find out by the weekend. He is coach in waiting in Austin, but who knows how long Mack Brown will keep him waiting. Muschamp has good experience coaching in the SEC as an assistant.

Sylvain (Calgary)

Hey Beano, To go back into a positive mood in this chat, whats your favourite memory from when Miami was changing the college football landscape?

Beano Cook
  (3:37 PM)

They changed the landscape and I liked all of the trees.

jose (tucson)

Why shouldn't the players get paid. It is capitalism or only for the coaches and sportscasters.

Beano Cook
  (3:38 PM)

They get a scholarship...that is worth a lot of money.

Ken (CA)

The SEC has now won 6 of 12 BCS championships....should we know rename the BCS championship as "13th annual SEC challenge" for next year?

Beano Cook
  (3:38 PM)

Yeah, we should do that. Good idea.

Mark Beetz (Coral springs)

Hey Beano do you think the mighty Noles of Florida State University's past come out and shine in the upcoming football year? Do they win more games then last year?

Beano Cook
  (3:39 PM)

Yes, I would think so, during the regular season.

Jordan (Atlanta, GA)

Do you see VT Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster leaving the Hokies for a head coaching job elsewhere or just staying on the coaching staff and replacing Frank Beamer whenever he retires?

Beano Cook
  (3:40 PM)

If offered, he might. If he likes it, he might take it. He certainly has done a good job at Tech and Beamer has been there a long time.

Kevin Koehler (State College, PA)

Beano, always great to hear your thoughts. What do you see Penn State's outlook next year? Any possibility of a National Championship run in 2012?

Beano Cook
  (3:43 PM)

They have a lot of questions, starting at quarterback. The Nittany Lions lost a lot on defense, including Navorro Bowman. They need to find a replacement for Clark and Penn State could have a rocky season. They should go 3-1 in non-conference play, only losing to Alabama. The Big Ten is not that tough, though Penn State has to go to Ohio State and Iowa. I see them winning at least eight games.

Jake (SLC)

Do you the the Mountain West Conference from top to bottom over the past, say, five years is better than any of the BCS conferences?

Beano Cook
  (3:45 PM)

If it is better than any BCS conference, it would be the Big East and I don't buy that, from top to bottom. I will say the Mountain West should have an automatic bid to the BCS. I have said that for years.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Mr. Cook: I hardly ever hear of PSU assistant coaches being courted for HC jobs. Are they that devoted to Joe Pa or am I just missing their names being mentioned?

Beano Cook
  (3:46 PM)

Joe Paterno is going to be coaching there for several years and then one of the assistants will et promoted. Over the years there have been a few, like Dick Anderson going to coach Rutgers.

Blake (Awesomeville)

Beano, There is some talk of Boise State make a run at the National Championship this year. Is this just talk or do they really have a chance?

Beano Cook
  (3:47 PM)

Ivan Maisel of ESPN.com picked Iowa vs. Boise State as his early pick to play for the national title. Boise State has a lot of talent returning but the schedule is tougher with Virginia Tech and Oregon State on the slate. They have a chance.

Bren (California)

Let me give you an example of my thoughts. The NCAA could make a rule that if a Div I coach leaves for another Div I school that the departed school picks up 2 scholarships and the new school loses 2 scholarships. The penalty would only apply to the first year.

Beano Cook
  (3:48 PM)

Bad idea.

Evan (BHM)

Hi, Beano--do you and another Notre Dame fans wretch at the idea of losing to Lane Kiffin next year?

Beano Cook
  (3:49 PM)

I am not a Notre Dame fan but I respect the football program. How can you not respect the things accomplished there?

Roman (San Francisco)

Rumor has it that the Song Girls have already made their way to Long Beach Poly...care to comment?

Beano Cook
  (3:49 PM)

There will be a lot of transfers there...

John (Tampa,Florida)

It was reported earlier that Leach was contacted by USF about the coaching position, do you think it is a very good idea to be pursuing someone who was just fired for the same reason as Jim?

Beano Cook
  (3:50 PM)

It might be. I don't know all of the details.

Nelson (DE)

What are your thoughts about Mark McGwire's steroid admission?

Beano Cook
  (3:51 PM)

What sport did he play?

Bigwavedave (Catonsville)

Did Matt Barkely get screwed at USC or what?

Beano Cook
  (3:52 PM)

No. How did he get the shaft? He will have very good coaching and he is not going anywhere...

Maurice S (Fort Pierce,FL)

In the wake of Kelly leaving Cincy, Kiffin leaving UT, could we see an increase in coch in waiting scenarios?

Beano Cook
  (3:53 PM)

Yeah, good observation. We could see it, but it is not a great idea. Conan O'Brien waited five years and look at what is going on with him!

Nate (Lima, OH)

Buckeyes vs Tide next year for the BCS title Mr. Cook???

Beano Cook
  (3:57 PM)

It is time to make my pick, early edition. This is subject to change in late August. I am picking USC to beat Ohio State. The reason I am picking the Buckeyes is simple...the non-conference schedule is not that tough and the league isn't either. Iowa is the toughest test. If Ohio State were in the SEC, forget it. USC may be on probation by then, who knows. Thanks for another great season of chats. I will see you sometime in February for the next chat. Check on espn/cp, for the schedule.
