Chat with Matt Mosley

Mason (Louisville)

Matt!, missed you last week buddy. Riddle me this...Can the Cowboys afford to come out slow again by starting Barber against the Vikings? I'm afraid that if they give him most of the 1st quarter to see if he can hit the holes, and he fails, it will put the Cowboys in a position of playing from behind...something they haven't had to do during their 4 game hot streak. Your Thoughts?

Mosley
  (12:03 PM)

Mason, I missed you guys, too. I don't think you mess with something that's working. Barber had three carries for 58 yards on the first drive of the season finale against the Eagles. If he's healthy throw him out there. It's not the like Cowboys will wait until the next series to get Felix Jones on the field. They've been doing a much better job with the rotation.

Jason (Manhattan (NY))

Matt, I believe that Andy Reid's "defense" of McNabb was an attempt to avoid ramping up the early offseason controversy and not so much a true endorsement that Donovan will start next season. At least I hope so...Although the line was terrible on Saturday, McNabb was just as bad when he had time to throw. His first throw of the game bounced 3 yards in front of Maclin, which provided a great indication of what McNabb had to offer that day. Just a pathetic performance in a big game... I'm hoping that Kolb gets his chance to start next year. He certainly showed some promise early in the season. What do you think the Eagles should do, and how do you see it actually playing out? Thanks...

Mosley
  (12:04 PM)

I think it might be a good time to bite the bullet and start the Kolb era. Especially if another team is willing to give you a pair of second-round picks. I think something very interesting will happen with Kolb this offseason. And I'll be all over the story.

Cameron (Indy)

Collinsworth mentioned during Saturday night's game that a certain DB for the Cowboys mouthed off to Brooking in practice. On the next snap Brooking ran straight backwards and intentionally hit the DB. Have you heard about this? Do you know which DB it was?

Mosley
  (12:05 PM)

I have not, but I'll try to get to the bottom of that for you.

Cameron (Indy)

Do you think the Cowboys will have any success running up the middle on the Vikings? I understand that the Williams brothers are big, but I wouldnt call Davis and Gurode small either.

Mosley
  (12:06 PM)

I think the Cowboys' offensive line has been dominant lately. I don't think you'll have a ton of success up the middle, though. Felix Jones can bounce runs outside. If you can get him in some one-on-one matchups with this LB corps, you're in good shape.

Brian (Dallas)

What's Up Mosley? I listen to you daily here in Dallas on GAC. I don't always agree with your "antics" but I really do believe that behind all the crap, you're a genuine person.Question: With the Cowboys being such a young team and Romo seemingly coming together as a quarterback....Do you see the Cowboys as a legitimate contender for the next 3 to 4 years? I think Romo still has some growing to do. There are still some throw that he makes that I cringe at. I can sense that it is a play by play battle for him to keep things under wraps. Your thoughts? Also, shout out to me on GAC. I'm 4014 on the text toy.

Mosley
  (12:08 PM)

Brian, thanks for listening. And yes, I think the Cowboys are set up to make an extended run. The key players on defense (Ratliff, Ware, Spencer) are all in their 20s. This thing could keep rolling. And I think Romo's made some important changes. I wouldn't worry too much about his throws right now. He'll still throw the occasional, but even the great Peyton does that.

Rusty (Ashburn, VA (no, really))

Okay, so maybe Jason Campbell is not now (and may never be) of the same caliber as Peyton, Tom, Drew, Philip, Brett, etc., but isn't it worth $3.2 mil to find out if he could be a Matt Hasselbeck, Chad Pennington type of QB? That is one who, if you give him a good running game and don't expect him to carry the whole team, can win a whole bunch of games and make you a legitimate and consistent playoff contender? I'm tired of dialing 1-800-Quarterback!

Mosley
  (12:10 PM)

I'm a big Campbell guy. I've never hidden that. In the right offense, he could be a very effective quarterback. Heck, he put up decent numbers behind an awful offensive line this season. And look at how ridiculous the playcalling situation was. I'd give the guy an extension and see what Shanahan could do with him.

Mike (Morgantown, WV)

Hey Matt--lovethe blog. It seemed to me, the common viewer, that the Cowboys offensive line did not suffer a drop-off when Doug Free stepped in for Marc Colombo. Based on Free's performance, do you think he has a future at left tackle as Flozell Adams' replacement? Also, does Free's performance make anyone on the offensive line expendable (particularly Adams or Colombo)?

Mosley
  (12:11 PM)

I think Doug Free is the future at LT. Not sure if that will begin in 2010 or 2011.

Mike (Brooklyn)

MM - Entering the draft, I think the Giants biggest needs are in this order: DT, a cover safety, and MLB. I don't care if you have Patrick Willis at MLB - the Giants DTs were largely awful last year, and it all starts up front. I'm thinking a guy like Brian Price from UCLA, and hopefully a Chad Jones or Nate Allen in Round 2. Thoughts?

Mosley
  (12:13 PM)

They have to become a more physical unit. What concerns me right now about the organization is the fact that GM Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin don't appear to be on the same page about what's wrong with this team. They better figure out pretty quickly and move on down the road. I think the LB situation may be more dire than the other ones you mentioned. You'll get Phillips back at safety. You just need to make sure you have better depth at that spot next season.

Andrew (Boston)

Hi, Are the Cowboys now the team to beat in the NFC, especially if they play the way they did against Philly?

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

Yes, I've said his several times -- both in print and on radio.

Brian (Maryland)

What's up Matt! Who do you think the Giants will pick up for the DC job? Also, what's this I hear about Gilbride may be going elsewhere? I know we want to make changes but, jezzzz

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

I've heard that the Bears are interested in Gilbride. And I know the Giants have shown some interest in Fewell and Crennel for the DC job. I'll keep you posted.

Ken (Scottsdale, AZ)

Hey Matt, you said it was "Ridiculous" that Darnell Dockett was elected to the Pro Bowl. You know how absurd that statement is?

Mosley
  (12:15 PM)

That's not what I said, Ken. I said it was ridiculous that he's starting in front of Jay Ratliff.

Jay (Philly)

How scared should the rest of the NFC be about the prospect of former Eagles and Giants blitzing genius Steve Spagnuolo having Chris Long and Ndamukong Suh for the next half decade or so?

Mosley
  (12:15 PM)

Could be a pretty nice combo. But without a QB, it won't matter.

Bob (D.C.)

Any insight on who will be the new defensive coordinator in Washington?

Mosley
  (12:16 PM)

Zimmer's contract is up in Cincy. I think that's a pretty good possibility.

John (VA)

Buy sell or hold on Henne??I'm a big buyer.

Mosley
  (12:16 PM)

Buy!

TJ (Dallas)

I read that Dallas "insiders" were upset that Columbo was inserted back into the lineup for Doug Free, who had been playing very well. From what I saw the insiders were right. As a whole, the oline did well, but Columbo seemed to struggle at times. profootballfocus.com has a negative 6.7 metric for the game.

Mosley
  (12:17 PM)

I have no clue what a negative metric is nor do I want to know. I thought he held up pretty well -- especially given the fact that he'd been out so long.

Sergio (Toronto)

What do you think the Skins witll do with the #4 overall pick? I'm of the opinion they will trade down if offered the opportunity.

Mosley
  (12:18 PM)

I think they'd like to trade down, but that's high cotton. You might not be able to find a trade partner. You look and see who's the best player. I certainly wouldn't reach for a QB.

Jeff (Mount Pleasant, MI)

All I hear is how the Cowboys are the team to beat right now... Balanced offense vs their D and good run defense vs their O are their weakness... Hmmm... They are playing that type of team...

Mosley
  (12:20 PM)

Should be an excellent matchup. I just think the Vikings' slippage in December is worrisome. You let the Bears put 36 on you and the Panthers blew you off the field. The Vikes play much better at home, though, so that's something to keep in mind.

Tarik Rainey (Dallas)

Also, tell Randy to stick it up his ying yang, the show be called MAC, (MATT AND COMPANY)...

Mosley
  (12:20 PM)

I think you're onto something!

Jerry Jones (Dallas)

Hey Matt - Great Job this year!! So do you think I should have traded Martellus Bennet when I had the chance? At the begining of the year it looked like Martellus was going to be a huge force for this offense and bobby Carpenter was going to be a bust - talk about change of opinion down the stretch. The only time you hear about Martellus now is when he makes a mistake or is being flagged for a penalty.

Mosley
  (12:21 PM)

Did Jerry tell us he could've gotten a second-rounder for Martellus or was it a first-rounder? Anyway, I'd let this thing play out. He's a big part of the blocking game right now.

Sergio (Toronto)

What are your thoughts on Mike Shanahan? Do you think he is the right guy to turn this mess around?

Mosley
  (12:22 PM)

If Snyder stays out of his way and the Skins surround him with some quality personnel folks, this thing has a chance to work. I could see the Skins winning 10 games next season. Seriously.

Travis (Chantilly, VA)

Let's talk Redskins. Which players on the current roster will not be here next year and who can we bring in through the draft or trades to make this team better next year? I think with the 4th pick in the draft we need Russel Okung and Toby Gehart in the second round (shades of Riggins)

Mosley
  (12:26 PM)

The trade thing will be tough. Better to build through the draft. I like Okung. Watched him play at least eight or nine times on TV over the years. I think you get rid of Clinton Portis, Carlos Rogers and some of the spares on the OL. You don't need Mike Williams hanging around. Say goodbye to Randy Thomas. Obviously Chris Samuels is probably done. I'd clean out that secondary. Tryon's not a player. Say goodbye to Smoot. And lose some age on defense. I like Daniels. Great guy but it's time to move on.

J. Coleman ((New Yorkish))

How far can the Cowboys make it in these playoffs?

Mosley
  (12:26 PM)

They have as good a chance as anyone at making it to Miami.

K (philly)

Does B west play out his last year? What should the Eagles draft first...LB, Safety, or DE?

Mosley
  (12:26 PM)

I think it would probably be best to move on without Westbrook.

Ian (Philadelphia, PA)

What do you think about the Eagles quarterback stituation? Do you think Donovan will be the wuarterback next season?

Mosley
  (12:27 PM)

As of this minute, yes I think he'll be the QB.

Rocco (MN)

Leslie Frazer is a smart DC. Do you think he has something up his sleeve for the Cowbot Offense?

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

I've been observing his sleeve on film the last few weeks. I'm almost certain he has something "up it."

J. Coleman ((New Yorkish))

Do you think the Giants can win with Eli or should they go a different direction?

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

Give me a break. They won a Super Bowl with him.

Anthony Powell (Boynton Beach, Florida)

Matt do you think it is time for the Andy Reid Era to come to an end he is not the Coach he once was and that was embrassing on Saturday?

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

Not going to happen. Give up the ghost.

Russ (FL)

Matt, what positions are needed the most in the draft for the Eagles?

Mosley
  (12:31 PM)

Safety is a major issue right now. Bring in more help at CB. But more than anything, you better get another pressure player. I like Cole a lot but he needs help. And I'm not talking about Juqua Parker and Vic Abiamiri.

Wes (North CA)

Is Jenkins a better CB than Newman now? How would you rate those two?

Mosley
  (12:31 PM)

Yes, Jenkins is better at this point.

Jeff (Atlanta)

Matt, It is obvious that the key to the Cowboys recent success is that they are inspired by the new stadium just as Jerry predicted. I'm surprised Jerry hasn't mentioned that this week, along with all the other things he was right about (Miles replacing TO, height of the video board, making Wade DC, etc). Is this a sign of the apocalypse?

Mosley
  (12:32 PM)

He actually named Cowboys Stadium a team captain last week. Or maybe I'm making that up.

Kevin Seifert (NFC NORTH)

Cmon man! Answer a question from you fellow blogger. How much do you think the Cowboys will beat the Vikings?

Mosley
  (12:33 PM)

Kev, I haven't made up my mind yet. I don't know who I'm going to pick. Look forward to our debate tomorrow, though. Thanks for joining the chat.

Chris G (NY)

Who is more likely to choke in Minny, Romo of Favre? And what team is better equippped to win in spite of something like that?

Mosley
  (12:33 PM)

I don't think either QB will "choke."

Marc (City of Brotherly Love)

What should the Eagles address first in the offseason? Safety or linebacker? Both seem to be glaring needs.

Mosley
  (12:33 PM)

Someone to rush the passer, Marc. Other than Trent Cole.

J. Coleman ((New Yorkish))

Who is the best TE in the playoffs right now?

Mosley
  (12:34 PM)

Witten and Gates are right there together. I think of Clark as another WR.

Josh (NC)

Matt.. Do you think the giants are in for another rough year. As i see it, i do not think they are going to be able to fix all the question marks they have right now. And with Dal and Philly having alot of talent and success with the current roster on hand could make it more difficult.

Mosley
  (12:35 PM)

I have a lot of faith in GM Jerry Reese. I think they'll be back.

Dustin (Austin)

Redoing the draft, doesn't it seem like the Cowboys knew what they were doing drafting Mike Jenkins over DeSean Jackson? I can't believe this doesn't get brought up more considering Dallas had two 1st round picks that year.

Mosley
  (12:36 PM)

Well, Jackson is a special player. But the Cowboys had T.O. at that time. They didn't feel the need to go after another young receiver. And plus, they took DeSean Jackson off their board. They didn't even consider him.

jimmy (seattle)

Matt. With the Seahawks move to get carroll, do you see them having a chance to draft T. Mays? They need a safety, and he grew up going to HS 10 minutes from Qwest Field.

Mosley
  (12:36 PM)

Jimmy Johnson went after Miami players in the early 90s, so I could definitely see Carroll going after guys like that.

Rick (New Hampshire)

A lot of people are saying the Patriots dynasty is over, but any team with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick always have a shot every year for a Super Bowl title I really think the Patriots need to work on the defense side of things. What are your thoughts on how what the Patriots need to do to be that team most teams fear to play?

Mosley
  (12:37 PM)

Welker is a huge part of what makes that team go. And I also think Belichick ran off a couple of really good leaders on defense.

J. Coleman ((New Yorkish))

In your opinion who makes it to the Superbowl?

Terrell Owens (Buffalo)

Any chance they miss me in the lockeroom in Dallas?

Mosley
  (12:38 PM)

Nope.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear MattCould you see the Redskins getting rid of Jason Campbell?

Mosley
  (12:38 PM)

Chioke, I think Shanahan wants to keep him for now.

Joseph (Sacramento, CA)

With the Redskins owning the #4 pick, and Clausen and Bradford presumably available, do you see Shanahan selecting one of these guys or taking a highly rated Offensive Tackle like Okung? Thanks.

Mosley
  (12:39 PM)

I'd go with the tackle, but that's just me.

Will (California)

MattLove you work! In your opinion, what happened to M. Bennett? I really thought he would be a stud this year. Any buzz on what changed? Thanks!!

Mosley
  (12:40 PM)

Well, I think it will take Tony Romo some time to trust the guy. He's been an effective blocker this season, but he sort of gets lost in his routes at times. We just got a little carried away with his preseason production. I'd stay with him.

Justin (Salt Lake City)

Whats better Viking's O or Cowboy's O? Viking's D or Cowboy's D? And Viking's ST or Cowboy's ST? Lastly if you pick the Vikings for 2/3 how do you still pick the Cowboys on Sunday after proclaiming the NFC super bowl rep?

Stephen (Richmond, VA)

A lot of people seem to be excited about the possibilities with Mike Shanahan at the helm, but at the same time they seem to be hedging their bets a bit to wait and see. Question is, what do you think about the Redskins going after coaches on other teams to take, more or less, the same position with an upgraded title? Personally, I'd love to have them coaching with the Skins, but aren't the rules about lateral moves a bit of a joke?

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

It sort of depends where those coaches are in their contracts. The head coach or GM can choose to block the move if it's a lateral move or even if it's a promotion. Tony Sparano could've gone from the O-line coach to the OC in New Orleans in '06 but Bill Parcells blocked the move.

Kevin kolb (philly)

do you think i can be a nfl starter in the elite class or more like kyle orton good but nothing to fear

Mosley
  (12:43 PM)

I think you can be a solid starter in this league. I have no clue if you can be an "elite" qb.

mikey g (nyc )

what do the eagles have to do to get juluis peppers

Mosley
  (12:44 PM)

They'd have to give up a first-round pick and perhaps throw in a player.

Brandon (Texas)

How do you think colombo did coming back from injury and do you think they will continue to rotate him and free?

Mosley
  (12:44 PM)

I thought he played really well.

Charlie (Columbia, MD)

The word around the camp fire is that Shanahan wants to move the Skins to a 3-4. I know Orakpo can fit in as an OLB in that scheme, and Fletcher can play in any scheme, but how does the rest of defensive squad fit a 3-4? Especially Haynesworth.

Mosley
  (12:46 PM)

Haynesworth can play in any scheme. I don't think Fletcher would flourish at all in that scheme. In fact, you'd almost need to release him. Seriously. Look at the Cowboys' inside LBs with Bradie James and Brooking. How does Fletcher measure up to those guys in size. He'd get crushed in a 3-4.

Austin (Frisco)

Is Eli still the best QB in the NFCE in your opinion?

Mosley
  (12:46 PM)

Not right now. That would be Mr. Romo.

Jason (Monahans, TX)

With the Cowboys recent success, I believe those in the media who have been bashing the Cowboys should write some sort of apology piece. Insteda, they say the fans felt the same way. Your thoughts?

Mosley
  (12:47 PM)

An apology piece? Really? How bout we just report the truth: They're a really, really good football team right now.

Reccan (Gainesville, FL)

Hey Matt big fan...How do you view D Ware and Anthony Spencer vs their tackles? I've heard from a couple of people that the Spencer taking on that rookie tackle is a big mismatch and Ware apparently has a mismatch as well with a declining pro bowler in the last month or so. Will the Vikings max protect or what?

Mosley
  (12:48 PM)

They'll have to max protect at times. And the RBs are going to have to do a nice job in helping Favre. He gets the ball out pretty quickly so it might not be as huge of a concern as you might think.

Diran (New york)

Desean Jackson or Miles Austin for pro Bowl starter?

Mosley
  (12:48 PM)

Based on recent evidence, I'd go with Austin.

Luis (Santa Barbara, CA)

Greetings from 74 degree California! MattMo, Who wins the following matchups: Ware vs. B-Kini, Shiancoe vs. Sensabaugh, Austin vs. Winfield?

Mosley
  (12:49 PM)

Ware, Shiancoe, Austin.

Another Mosley (Los Angeles)

Great name by the way and I keep hearing about Merriman wanting to land in D.C. or Dallas what is your take?

Mosley
  (12:49 PM)

Cuz, he's not coming to Dallas.

John (Baton Rouge)

MattWhere do you see Vick next season?

Mosley
  (12:49 PM)

Rams?

Pete (Silver Spring, MD)

Hey Matt. When I think of this upcoming cowboys games, two things stand out in my mind. One, we know the cowboys can almost certainly get pressure through the Vikes o-line; to counter that though, I'd think Favre utilizes some deadly quick slants. Can james/brooking control the slant routes? If so, all I know is Mcnaab escaped more pressure by being mobile, whereas old man Brett's not quite so nimble

Mosley
  (12:51 PM)

If I'm the Cowboys, I'd almost prefer the mobile quarterback. Favre has been deadly accurate this season. That wasn't the case with McNabb recently.

Diran (New york)

If the Cowboys beat the vikings who do you see them facing in the nfc Championship game?

Mosley
  (12:51 PM)

Saints.

Steve (San Francisco)

Matt, if the Eagles decide to move McNabb, what kind of return can they expect? Niners have two firsts, one of those maybe?

Mosley
  (12:51 PM)

A low first or two seconds.

Mikey (Philly)

Can the Cardinals really beat the Saints?

Mosley
  (12:52 PM)

sure they can.

Steve (ND)

Who would you predict to win the turnover battle, Minnesota or Dallas?

Mosley
  (12:52 PM)

Cowboys. They can generate more pressure.

Steve (Dallas)

The Cowboys 4th ranked run D is going to give Adrian fits. What will the Vikes 2nd ranked D do to the Cowboys run game?

Mosley
  (12:53 PM)

Something has to give. But this game will be won by air.

RJ (Boston)

Pete Carroll: 6-10, 10-6, 9-7, 8-8.What about this track record makes the Seahawks think he will be better the 2nd time around? Is there another former NCAA stud coach besides Jimmy Johnson who won in the NFL?

Mosley
  (12:53 PM)

This thing is doomed from the start.

Steve (SC)

Who's running the offense in Minnesota - Childress or Favre??? And will that be an issue on Sunday??

Mosley
  (12:53 PM)

Childress.

Marc (City of Brotherly Love)

Do you think the Eagles are starting to regret trading away that 1st round pick that Dallas used on Anthony Spencer?

Mosley
  (12:54 PM)

Depends on what happens with Kevin Kolb. That's who they took in the second.

Patrick (Dallas)

low scoring defensive struggle or shootout?

Mosley
  (12:55 PM)

21-17

Chris (Irving)

Matt, love your stuff on ESPNDallas.com. Is the Cowboys' key to this week's game forcing Brett Favre into becoming a mobile quarterback.

Mosley
  (12:56 PM)

Yes, you definitely want him to have to move off his spot in the pocket. But the Vikes also try to roll him out at times. He doesn't have speed. But he still does a nice job of feeling pressure.

J. Coleman (New Yorkish)

Did P. Manning deserve the MVP over Brees and Favre??

Mosley
  (12:56 PM)

I'm fine with it.

Steve (Dallas)

So even though the Vikes had more sacks, the Cowboys generate more pressure?

Mosley
  (12:57 PM)

Cowboys front seven is playing better than the Vikings' front seven. It's not just about sacks. It's about rushing the QB, creating havoc.

Luis (Santa Barbara, CA)

Dallas Unsung Hero award goes to ____________. I'd submit for Joe DeCamillis

Mosley
  (12:58 PM)

I'd also go for Mat McBriar -- and my pal from the scouting department Rich Behm. What an incredible guy! OK, that's it for today's chat. I've loved every minute. Let's do this again someday. Please continue to support the No. 22 ranked Baylor Bears men's basketball team.
