Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

Greetings, Fights Freaks! I am here in NYC for tomorrow's terrific HBO doubleheader with Luevano-Lopez and Gamboa-Mtagwa. Just came from the weigh in. All four looked fit and ready to roll. Plenty to discuss as always. Big notebook is up, so is a new blog and some news stories from the week. So let's get to it.

Andy (Ventura, Ca)

Now that Sergio Martinez looks to be fighting Kelly Pavlik, What's next for Paul Williams?

Dan Rafael
  (3:33 PM)

The Pavlik-Martinez fight is not done. There is a little bit of a gap in what HBO is offering and what Top Rank/DiBella say they need. Hopefully the sides will get a little creative and get it done bcause it's a great fight. As for Williams, his people say they will explore a top welterweight fight if they can't get something else, like a Pavlik fight or Martinez rematch. We'll see what Paul does next. There are not a lot of attractive options right now.

Dan Rafael
  (3:35 PM)

Thanks. Marshall was the star amateur and is Steven's cousin. When Cameron Dunkin signed Marshall, who everyone had high hopes for, he also signed Steven as a little bit of an afterthought. Top Rank did the same thing with both guys. Martinez got in trouble and had zero discipline and is out of boxing. Luevano stayed out of trouble and worked his ass off and now he's one of the best featherweights in the world. Funny how things work out.

Chris (Phoenix)

Dandy Warhol - Which of the FSN shows are going to be distributed on FSN in English as opposed to just appearing on FSN Espanol?

Dan Rafael
  (3:36 PM)

Not sure specifically, although at least one of the US-based cards per month will have 100 percent clearance on FSN. The others may still be on FSN either live or delayed but it is up to each individual local network how they will do it.

Jose R. (California)

What are Dan's thoughts on Golden Boy Promotions signing both Amir Khan and Saul Alvarez in less the same week. Is this going to benefit there careers or would they have been better off with another promoter?

Dan Rafael
  (3:38 PM)

Great signings for GB and it will give both fighters big fights in the US. Right before the chat began, I was on the phone with Oscar De La Hoya. He called me just before leaving the press conference in Mexico to announce the signing. He sounded pretty excited to have signed Alvarez, who is an excellent young talent and very crowd pleasing.

Tony (Westport, CT)

I keep hearing that Timothy Bradley is having a hard time getting someone to fight him. Is this a legitimate claim and who do you think he should fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

It is legit. He doesnt bring a lot of money to the table and he's a loss for many fighters, so it's tough. I'd like to see him fight a Khan or a Paulie Malignaggi or any of the top 140s.

Sean (Richmond, VA)

Do you think Mosley-Mayweather, if and when made, will set a new precedance for the sport with regard to drug testing?

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

If that fight happens, rigorous drug testing will be part of it. Whether that translates to future fights remains to be seen. I think commissions need to re-evaluate their testing procedures.

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

Hold up Freaks. We have breaking news from the Bat E-mail.

Dan Rafael
  (3:41 PM)

The Glen Johnson-Yusaf Mack 175 eliminator that was supposed to be on Jan. 30 on the Mosley-Berto card that was canceled has been rescheduled. It will be on the Feb. 5 edition on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights!!!!!!!

Benjamin (Little Rock, Ark.)

Dan, great blog today. That background on the Collins-Resto fight really puts things in perspective. I'm going to pick up "Assault in the Ring" later today. What Margacheato did was both dangerous and despicable.

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

I agree. The docu is terrific and the DVD set has a second DVD that contains the full fight.

Nick (L.A.)

I thought you were about to announce Money v Mosley...maybe you will before the chat is over!

Dan Rafael
  (3:43 PM)

One never knows, does one?

bj (new haven)

wow!i was just gonna ask you about mack-johnson!

Dan Rafael
  (3:43 PM)

I read your mind.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,Kudos for keeping the freaks up on the top boxing news! With all the talk of Margacheato possibly getting relicensed to fight your blog was right on the money. Out of curiousity what kind of feedback have you gotten from actual boxers on Margacheato's return?

Dan Rafael
  (3:43 PM)

I haven't spoken to boxers about it yet.

John (San Fran)

That's huge for FNF, how'd they afford it?

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

There's usually a little money on the side for a rainy day and apparently, it's going to rain Feb. 5

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, any idea who Lucian Bute will defend his title against in April?

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 PM)

Up in the air but I know Miranda is a possibility.

psycho (LaLaLand)

wow what a way to go for FNF!!

Kobeyahara (San Francisco)

Dani, can Tavaris Cloud end up fighting Hopkins? That would be awesome man!

Dan Rafael
  (3:46 PM)

Extremely doubtful. Cloud is an unknown and brings zero money to the table.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Great pick-up for ESPN! Johnson-Mack will be a solid scrap!

Dan Rafael
  (3:47 PM)

I agree. I am really glad we picked it up.

bj (new haven)

hahaha.what a good fight that is. excellent job by FNF/ESPN. i was dissappointed HBO had no intentions of showing it before mosley/berto was canceled. no way the winner faces cloud on fnf in april?im assuming that is too soon

Dan Rafael
  (3:47 PM)

I think with FNF doing Johnson-Mack in Feb. and then doing Cloud in March it's possible we get the winners later in the year.

bill (pgh)

another strong main event on an improved season of FNF!

Jake (Rockville, MD)

D $izzle - Great night of fights tomorrow, who do you like?

Dan Rafael
  (3:48 PM)

I love the card. I like Gamboa on a knockout eventually although Mtagwa is game. The main event I see more of a tough fight but I think gun to my head I like Lopez on a knockout.

Steve (NYC)

Why does Glen Johnson get an eliminator fight, when he just got a title shot and lost easily?

Dan Rafael
  (3:49 PM)

The IBF went down its rankings and got to Glen when others passed up the eliminator. Even though Glen lost to Dawson I have no problem with him in an elimination fight. He's still one of the best light heavys.

Diane (Cleveland, OH)

I agree with those that spoke out in your blog, and also think that Margacheato should be banned for life. Do you, or do encourage those people in the industry to voice your opinions to the State Athletic Commissions?

Dan Rafael
  (3:50 PM)

If people want to voice their opinions to commissions have at it. I voiced my opinion in my blog today.

Edmund (Seattle, WA)

Will HBO have a 24/7 for the Pacquaio/ Clottey fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:50 PM)

No, but it will have a countdown show I am told.

Greg (New Jersey)

D$$,What's the latest news on Green/Bika? If they can't agree on a fight, how does the Super 6 decided who to pull into Taylor's spot?

Dan Rafael
  (3:52 PM)

I was told this afternoon that Bika-Green is not happening and Green is into the tournament and will face Ward April 17 in place of Taylor.

Chris (Kansas City)

I think Pavlik-Martinez (if it is finalized) is a great fight and will be more action packed than a Pavlik-Williams bout. I thought Martinez beat Williams. I predict Martinez and will be Middleweight Champion, probably by KO. Agree?

Dan Rafael
  (3:53 PM)

I'm not making a pick on that fight yet but I love the fight and think it's every bit as good or better than Pavlik-Williams. It certainly will cost HBO a lot less too than Pavlik-Williams will.

Jeff C. (New York, NY)

Dan, with John Duddy stepping back in the ring this Saturday, what are your thoughts on his future career prospects now that he has fallen in with Top Rank? I agree with you that he has a manufactured record and that showed in the loss to Lyell, but assuming he makes it through Saturday without getting cut is there a real fight for him on the horizon?

Dan Rafael
  (3:54 PM)

I spoke with Arum today and he said a fight he is considering is putting Duddy on the June 12 card that will be headlined by Foreman-Cotto. He said it could be Duddy against Jimmy Lange, from the Contender.

Brandon (Houston)

Frank Warren should become a partner with the promotional companies in America. All of his top fighters end up their anyway.

Dan Rafael
  (3:54 PM)

You know Norman Chad would say -- Pay the man, Shirley.

Eric (Miami)

Anything new in terms of the potential Judah-Urango fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:55 PM)

There is no potential Urango-Judah fight. Urango is signed to fight Alexander on March 6.

Butch (Boston)

Did Arum make a play for Khan and get beat out by GBP?

Dan Rafael
  (3:55 PM)

Yes, Top Rank spoke to Khan but I am not sure how serious the talks were.

Jonathan (Melbourne, FL)

Any updates on Foreman-Cotto? I assume it gets done with both being TR fighters. Would HBO really want to put a Boreman fight as the main event of a card though, or is that just posturing by Arum before he puts it on niche PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (3:57 PM)

The fight is going to get made. Arum and HBO met about it this week in NY. Arum would like HBO to buy the fight. If it doesn't, he will put it on PPV with or without HBO. At the moment, HBO is saying it will get back to him. They have not made an offer nor have they turned it down. Frankly, I am actually intrigued by the fight a little and it will be a big event on the eve of the PR Parade. I would think HBO would do it. Arum also wants to put Holt-Peterson on the undercard, which is a very solid fight.

Kevin (Denver)

How does Tim Lueckenhoff feel about Margarito potentially being re-licensed?

Dan Rafael
  (3:58 PM)

I assume OK since the ABC signed off on Texas giving him a license if it wants.

Will D (Cumberland. RI)

Who's a better at ducking top tier fighters.. Haye, Pavlik or Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (3:59 PM)

Pavlik has not ducked top fighters first off. Haye at least is fighting top heavys in Valuev and Ruiz, even if he ducked the Klitschkos. Mayweather doesnt fight top guys in his own division, so to answer you I would say Mayweather, which he can change by fighting Mosley.

Lou (Detroit)

Dan, who's the best blow-by-blow announcer in your lifetime?

Dan Rafael
  (4:00 PM)

Lampley, obviously.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

DTM, I may just be a sick freak, but after reading the Notebook today, I'm excited for Stevens/Brinkley. Stevens sounds like he's coming for a war and is promising to knock Brinkley out cold. I have a gut feeling that it could turn out to be quite a fight!

Dan Rafael
  (4:01 PM)

I dont disagree. I think they match up well.

matt (denver)

God, Pavlik hasn't ducked anyone. Williams thinks he's financially special when he really isn't.

Newt (Jacksonville)

Just want to give kudos to ESPN for going HD on Friday Night Fights. It makes a great show that much better, and the freaks greatly appreciate it.

jonathan (los angeles )

answer me this.... why you chat with us? do you not have a life?

Dan Rafael
  (4:03 PM)

Why do you chat with me? Do you not have a life?

Lawrence (Baltimore)

Dan, why move Cotto up to 154? Is he that much more interesting moving up to fight Foreman as opposed to staying at 147 and taking on any number of Mayweather, Mosely, Berto, Margarito, and so on?

Dan Rafael
  (4:04 PM)

He wants to move up, and that is his right. Mayweather is not going to fight him and he already fought Mosley and Margacheato. So why not?

Andres (Chula Vista, CA)

Pavlik hasn't ducked anyone? Ok, fine...but he also found a way to never agree to a fight with Arthur Abraham or Felix Sturm. He found a way to let a signed fight with Williams go to crap. Why is it that whenever a Top Rank fighter can't get a fight done it's never the Top Rank fighter's fault?

Dan Rafael
  (4:05 PM)

Sturm was never a fight anyone gave a crap about first off. As for Abraham, that was actually seriously in the works before the Super Six came along, so the sides just went their separate ways. Neither side was ducking.

Huji (NYC)

Apparently jonathan was also lacking an english teacher growing up

Matt (columbus, ohio)

DMoney. What do you think about margacheato and cotto potentially lining up in the future?

Dan Rafael
  (4:06 PM)

I would say anything is possible. There will be fans that want to see the rematch and it will generate money if it happens, so I think it's possible down the road.

Jeff (LA)

Could you please shed some light on Zsolt Erdei moving up to cruiser than going back down to 175?

Dan Rafael
  (4:07 PM)

If he does go back down it will be like what Dariuz Michalczewski did years ago -- make a ton of 175 defenses, go to cruiser and win a belt and then come back down. Although Erdei would come back down without a belt.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan when is Zab going to get of his ass and find himself a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (4:08 PM)

Who cares at this point?

psycho (LaLaLand)

do you give julio any chance against perro?

Dan Rafael
  (4:08 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I think you have to make Angulo the favorite but he is beatable and Julio is more experienced and a puncher also. So I do give him a shot even though I think Angulo should win.

Nick (Atlanta, GA)

So Pavlik has put his middleweight title on the line against such sterling fighters as Lockett, Rubio, and Espino... if Pavs hasn't ducked anyone, you're saying those 3 are the best the middleweight division has to offer?

Dan Rafael
  (4:10 PM)

Take a look at middle -- it SUCKS. Here's a guy who had injuries and also made two mandatories. He also fought Taylor twice and jumped up in weight to fight Hopkins, not to mention taking short money to fight Miranda when Miranda was considered a beast and the favorite. Come on.

Justin (Houston)

Anything in the works for Juan Manuel Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (4:10 PM)

Instead of me being rude and banning you and insulting you, how about do me a favor and just read today's notebook?

Chris (Boise)

Do we need to intoduce Johnathan in L.A. to Bing. These guys were meant for eachother

j-money (dallas,tx)

dan i would love to see berto(when he decides to come back) fight cotto in a title eliminator? i think that would a great fight, your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (4:12 PM)

Excellent fight but probably unlikely since it would mean Top Rank doing business with Al Haymon, which ain't happening.

Tim (Kansas City)

More impressive? Hopkins or Favre?

Dan Rafael
  (4:12 PM)

Hopkins. Nobody punches Favre in the head.

Jeff (LA)

There seems to be a lot of Universum fighters unhappy and "trying" to get out of their contracts. What is going on in Germany?

Dan Rafael
  (4:13 PM)

I think Universum is having trouble because it lost its television contract in Germany.

jcs (Winnipeg)

And now Pavlik is working on a fight with Martinez....yeah, really looks like he's ducking guys.

Dan Rafael
  (4:14 PM)

Exactly. And that's not just idle discussion. They're only about $250,000 apart on money with HBO and both sides want to get it done.

Yorkis (Philly)

Mosley-Mayweather won't happen because Mayweather will not go into a fight that he has a high risk of losing. If it's not special testing, he'll find another way to make it not happen. Being undefeated is more important to him than anything else in boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (4:15 PM)

Guess we will have to wait and see what happens in the next week or so.

Kenny (Brockton Mass)

With RJJ-BH II in the pipeline, what would you say is the biggest rematch in boxing history that never happened?

Dan Rafael
  (4:17 PM)

There are a lot. I would think Leonard-Hagler is one. Oscar-Trinidad is another. Douglas-Tyson.

Jose Miranda (Cayey, PR)

I read that Gamboa was a little over weight for tomorrows figth. Any updates on that?

Dan Rafael
  (4:17 PM)

I was at the weigh in. Gamboa was outside MSG walking around maybe trying to shed the last little bit. He weighed in right at 126.

Ron Balzack (Leftwich College)

It sucks that Mayweather is becoming Roy Jones circa 2000. He's bored, won't fight anyone good and is ruining the sport. Dan you are right to hate him.

Dan Rafael
  (4:18 PM)

I don't hate him. I just want to see him fight the best and prove he's the best instead of him just saying it. No matter how many times a person says something, it does not mean it is true.

Eric (Miami)

What do you think would be a fair split for PBF/Mosley? I can't see Floyd agreeing to 50/50 like he did with Pacquiao.

Dan Rafael
  (4:19 PM)

I would think 60-40 in Floyd's favor sounds about right.

Aaron (MI)

Is Showtime planning another Fight Camp 360 soon for the upcoming Super Six fights????

Dan Rafael
  (4:19 PM)

Yes, there are supposed to be at least four more shows during the tourney.

Dan Rafael
  (4:20 PM)

By the way -- for what it is worth, Felix Trinidad is here. I saw him in the hotel earlier and he was at the weigh in. He's here supporting Lopez and he looked trim.

Craig (UK)

Hey Dan, just a note to see you were on the UK screens of ESPN a couple of weeks ago, they showed the Karmazin fight. It was the first time I've actually heard you talk...

Dan Rafael
  (4:21 PM)

You're so lucky.

Jason Daniel Young (Ontario Canada)

What are saying about Tito? Looks like your hinting on something?

Dan Rafael
  (4:23 PM)

Not at all, just saying that Tito has sometimes been huge and today he looked in great shape.

Thomas (Finland)

1 Dollar for every 10th ticket? Is that really the best Top Rank could've offer as humanitarian help for Haiti?? Might as well just give the leftovers from Arum's breakfast sandwich.

Dan Rafael
  (4:25 PM)

You're a complete idiot. TR is giving $1 per ticket sold to the relief fund for every single show it will do this year. That could easily be $500,000. They don't have to give a dime. They are however. I don't like you.

Billy (Patchogue, NY)

Trinidad looking trim? Hopkins/Jones II and De La Hoya/Trinidad II on the same card? Revenge: The Rematches Part II? Only in America!

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

People who complain about the size of charity donations usually are the kind that don't contribute at all. It's just sad.

Dan Rafael
  (4:26 PM)

Exactly.

Kent (St Catharines)

Thomas (Findland) was just Bing'd.

clement (dubai)

is there any chance ( a miracle ) that z gorres can ever fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (4:27 PM)

Ummm, no. He had a serious brain injury and is lucky to be alive. His fighting days are over for good.

Brad (Pensacola, FL)

Do you really think Shane ducked Mayweather when he jumped up to fight Oscar?

Dan Rafael
  (4:30 PM)

Not at all. He moved up to divisions to fight the best guy and made tons of money. Plus, he was really struggling to make 135 at the time.

psycho (LaLaLand)

is jermain taylor HOF considerate as of now?

Dan Rafael
  (4:30 PM)

Um, no. Unless he buys a ticket.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Dan, saw pics the weigh-in.. Is Carlos Negron 8ft tall or is the guy he fighting 4'6"? What weight class is that?

Dan Rafael
  (4:31 PM)

Somewhere in between. He's a cruiserweight -- he was 181 pounds if I recall.

Paul B (NY, NY)

When are you up in Bristol next for FNF?

Dan Rafael
  (4:32 PM)

Not sure yet, but probably March 5. However, I will be on next week via Skype from my office.

Tim (boston)

What ever happened to James Kirkland?

Dan Rafael
  (4:32 PM)

Shall I ban him?

Victor (KCK)

what did you think of the Benavidez kid that Roach trains

Dan Rafael
  (4:33 PM)

Looked impressive against a shmear. But he comes with a big rep.

banishment (hungry)

i heard tim tastes well with some mustard

Garth (CT)

Looking forward to the Perez-Mares fight? Who do you like in that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (4:34 PM)

Great fight. I would favor Perez but I can't wait to see it.

Rob (Westbury)

What's next for Ali Funeka after the Guzman robbery? Any prospects?

Dan Rafael
  (4:35 PM)

He has a fight with Rolando Reyes for the vacant IBF belt. There's a purse bid coming up for it.

Jeff (Bridgewater, NJ)

Sergio Mora was supposed to return on the Mosely/Berto undercard as well. Is that part of the ESPN2 FNF on 2/5?

Dan Rafael
  (4:37 PM)

No.

Chris (Boise)

Do you ever wish the Hall of Fame had three or so levels, or would that just be nightmare?

Dan Rafael
  (4:38 PM)

English please.

Brad (Tennessee)

Where will the Urango/Alexander fight be?

Dan Rafael
  (4:38 PM)

Mohegan Sun in Conn.

Jeff (LA)

What do you think of the disgusting news of the wbcibfwba....abcdefg creating a new Super Heavyweight division? We need less divisions not more...just my opinion.

Dan Rafael
  (4:39 PM)

I despise it, as I do most things they do.

Cowboy Ron (Piston, PA)

dan, any interest in seeing Duddy vs. an old De La Hoya? white people love that fight

Dan Rafael
  (4:39 PM)

Less than zero.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

Has it been decided where Ward-Green will be?

Dan Rafael
  (4:40 PM)

Probably Oakland.

shane (vegas (aka sin city))

Is there anything that Chad Dawson has lined up?

Dan Rafael
  (4:42 PM)

Supposed to face Pascal in June in the mandatory. If they don't make a deal thre will be a purse bid.

Brian (DC )

Any idea when Berto might plan to fight again, and who are the potential options?

Dan Rafael
  (4:44 PM)

Not sure on when he will fight due to his family situation but one fight that has come up is Berto against Malignaggi.

Philly Geoff (Raleigh, NC)

DTM... Now that Green-Bika is off, is the ShoBox off for that date? Was looking forward to that card.

Dan Rafael
  (4:45 PM)

No, there is still a ShoBox that night.

Joe (New York)

Why wouldn't Manny agree to have a blood sample taken 14 days before the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (4:46 PM)

Ask him.

Duff (Abington, MA)

Do you think Paul Williams would take a fight against one of the lesser welterweights to prove to the top guys he can still make the weight? He is really hurting for a fight right now.

Dan Rafael
  (4:49 PM)

Sure but who's going to pay for a nothing fight? If Paul wants to fight for very little money maybe it's possible.

slam (mia)

dan you have to admit mannys excuse is lame..im sure you saw the brian kenny interview. He first said the day of the fight and then brian pressed him on the 14 days and he had some lame excuse about that 2. He said that he will be in heavy training 14 days out....Im not a rocket scientist but arent they heavy trianing 21 days out too?

Dan Rafael
  (4:49 PM)

You're right. Manny did a very poor job explaining himself.

Tom (Boston, Mass)

Dan, Any chance we can go back to the old style rankings, monthly rather than weekly? I must admit, I rarely check them with the lack of updates on the fighters. The rankings used to be my favorite item besides the notebooks.

Dan Rafael
  (4:51 PM)

They are weekly. With the holidays they were not updated for three weeks. Last week's and this week's had a ton of updates.

Rick (El Cajon, CA)

Hi Dan, I was curious how the Abraham vs. Dirrell fight wound up near Palm Springs? Not that I'm complaining but that just seemed kind of random for a fight of that stature?

Dan Rafael
  (4:53 PM)

The casino has a relationship with Gary Shaw, who promotes Dirrell. And with that fight slated for a US site it was fine. The fight means nothing anywhere in America, so they are lucky they found a site willing to put up a few bucks.

Philly Geoff (Raleigh, NC)

Is there a televised undercard for the for the Valero/DeMarco fight on Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (4:55 PM)

Yes.

rob (williston park)

Berto v. Malignaggi? other than they're both promoted by Dibella, what's the point? Berto would destroy him

Dan Rafael
  (4:57 PM)

I don't see the point either. That fight really does nothing for me and I like watching both guys.

Rick (Marina)

I like what Im hearing on the notebbook, how about a double header of Marquez vs Khan with Guerero vs Katsidas

Dan Rafael
  (4:58 PM)

Me too. I love the idea of Khan-Marquez and Katsidis-Guerrero.

Emilio (Sacramento)

Danzig - Is there any talk about Margarito changing trainers for his next fight? I mean, come on, he can't really expect everyone to believe his "I didn't know BS" and still bring back the same trainer. If he really didn't know he should've fired Capatillo not continue to have him as chief 2nd.

Dan Rafael
  (4:59 PM)

Yes, I asked Bob today about that and he said Capetillo is out. No word on a specific replacement.

Jason (Dallas)

Dan, I don't know if you had a chance to look at the tickets and pricing for the Pacquiao fight in Dallas, but it is going to be a rip off. I have gone to fights in AC and Vegas and paid 2-300 a seat to have a good view. The same tickets here are $700. I think it's ridiculous.

Dan Rafael
  (5:01 PM)

For a major fight I think the tickets are actually priced very well with lots of $50 seats. Ringsides for a major fight are often $1,000 or more. The top is $700. So it's in line or better than most fights.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

If Hopkins-Jones 2 moves to April 3rd, would it still be in Vegas? I'm supposed to be there that weekend and as much as I hate the fight happening, I'd have to go.

Dan Rafael
  (5:01 PM)

Yes, I believe so.

John (Maryland)

Dan, what do you make of Mtagwa coming in at only 122.5? Do you think he over trained?

Dan Rafael
  (5:02 PM)

I was surprised he was so light. I do not think that bodes well.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, what are your thoughts on Oscar's 180 regarding Pacquiao's punching power?

Dan Rafael
  (5:02 PM)

Oscar had contradicted himself more than any person I have ever met in my life.

Steve (NYC)

How does Sam peter can an eliminator when all he did was KO 3 bums in his alst 3 fights?

Dan Rafael
  (5:03 PM)

He's been active, which is more than a lot of top heavys can say.

Joe (Phila)

Do you have any word on ticket sales for tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (5:04 PM)

There are some scattered tix left as of today. It's probably going to be a clean sellout.

Greenberg (NYC)

Who wins the Royal Rumble?

Dan Rafael
  (5:05 PM)

I have not yet handicapped the field.

Danny (Orlando, FL)

Will Caballero ever fight Juanma after all that trash-talking he did?

Dan Rafael
  (5:07 PM)

The question is will Juanma ever fight Caballero, and it doesn't look like it.

Rick (Marina)

Any chance Luavano scores the upset, I will be pulling for him since he's from La Puente which is close to my old stomping grounds.

Dan Rafael
  (5:08 PM)

Of course. Steven is an excellent boxer and has toughness.

Jorge (Anaheim,CA)

Where would Khan-Marquez take pace? England or the U.S.

Dan Rafael
  (5:08 PM)

US of A.

J.R. (SFV, Ca)

Thoughts on a possible fight between Paul Williams & Kermit Cintron at 154?

Dan Rafael
  (5:08 PM)

Not too bad considering what is out there.

Popov (USA)

Why hasn't Mayweather called out JuanMa Lopez yet? Somebody's 0 must go, baby!

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, from your conversations with Richard Schaefer, how close is the Mayweather-Mosley fight in becoming reality?

Dan Rafael
  (5:10 PM)

I havent spoken to Richard about it in a day or two but I did speak to Leonard Ellerbe last night and he said things were going well. So we'll see.

Danny (Orlando, FL)

Juanma offered him a fight but Caballero did not like the purse.

Dan Rafael
  (5:10 PM)

It was not a legitimate offer.

Brendan (Cherry Hill, NJ)

Will HBO pick up on the Klitschko vs Chambers fight on March 20th?

Dan Rafael
  (5:12 PM)

At the moment, that is not the plan.

Cody (Tucson)

Is there some boxing law that says that the cinco de mayo weekend has to be a ppv?

Dan Rafael
  (5:12 PM)

I believe it is in the small print.

Eric (Omaha)

Dan -Did you see UFC moved it's May PPV back a week so not to (possibly) compete with Mayweather-Mosley? So much for boxing being dead . . .

Dan Rafael
  (5:13 PM)

Just smart business. Boxing doesn't plan huge events around big UFC cards either.

J.R. (SFV, Ca)

prediction for Vazquez-Marquez 4? Will it live up to the previous 3 fights or really show us how much these guys have taken out of each other?

Dan Rafael
  (5:16 PM)

How could it possibly live up to the first three fight, which are all all-time classics?

Jorge (Anaheim,CA)

Will GB bring Alvarez to the states immediately or keep him in Mexico for a while, since he seems to draw good there?

Dan Rafael
  (5:17 PM)

Oscar told me the plan is for Alvarez to fight a March fight that is already planned in Mexico, then come to the US for his next three fights -- May 1 on the Mosley-Mayweather undercard if that fight is done, then in September and then in December.

Luis (PR)

Hey Dan, the other day I was watching DLH-Trinidad again. Just out of curiosity, how did you score that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (5:17 PM)

I had Oscar winning lik 8-4.

Don (Miami)

If the negotiations for Mayweather/Mosley fall apart do you think there will be a severe backlash towards Floyd considering it would be the second big fight negotiation that fell apart involving him?

Dan Rafael
  (5:18 PM)

DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Dan Rafael
  (5:18 PM)

DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

JOHN (LOS ANGELES CA)

Dan, do u think BHOP is capable of knocking out jones based on his last performance?

Dan Rafael
  (5:19 PM)

In the immortal words of our broadcast hero, who I talked to earlier in the hotel lobby, absolutely.

BBC (England)

How many Ricky Hatton's are looking to return to the ring this year?????

Dan Rafael
  (5:19 PM)

I believe just one.

Eric (Omaha)

Speaking of scoring, how did you score Martirosyan-Ouma?

Dan Rafael
  (5:20 PM)

I had Ouma by one point.

Ryan (NYC)

Danny Zuko - Any updates on the proposed Adamek/Arreola fight in April? That one will be nuts! I can only assume that Adamek will pass his test on Feb 6...

Dan Rafael
  (5:21 PM)

Adamek has to win and then they have to finish negotiating the fight, but it's possible it will happen.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Follow up on the scoring for Martirosyan-Ouma. How do you have scores of 97-93, 97-93, 97-92 in a fight were the loser scored a knockdown???

Dan Rafael
  (5:22 PM)

It's possible the knockdown round was only scored 10-9 in favor of Ouma because Vanes dominated most of the round.

John (LA)

Approximately when do you think the Mayweather-Mosley fight will be finalized?

Dan Rafael
  (5:23 PM)

I have no idea.

Spoiler Alert (..)

Hartford still sux

Brad (Fl)

Dan, who needs the fight more, Floyd or Shane?

Dan Rafael
  (5:24 PM)

Floyd needs it more. He needs to money more and he needs it more for his legacy.

jon (VEGAS)

Dan even though sugar shane will be coming off a 16month layoff i still think he has a hell of a chance to take the pretyboy's 0 ...who do you like in that fight if it comes off ?? thanks

Dan Rafael
  (5:28 PM)

Of course Shane can win the fight but I make no predictions at this point.

Danny (Orlando, FL)

I'm looking forward to tomorrow. If Luevano wins will he get more attention/fans or the same ol' same ol'? Juanma has a good fan base, but they tend to stick with their own fighters. I can't see any of them supporting Luevano afterwards.

Dan Rafael
  (5:30 PM)

I agree with you. Lopez has a lot of fans and the Puerto Rican fans are very loyal. Steven has no fan base, which is why he's in NY on Lopez's turf and why he is making about half the money of Lopez ($200something to $400something).

Danny (Orlando, FL)

Luevano will have to take the BHopkins approach and just keep defending that title until people start to realize.

Dan Rafael
  (5:32 PM)

You're right but a huge difference is that BHop could talk up a storm. Steven is not a big talker at all.

Randy (NYC)

Is there even the slim-est chance that Hopkins/Jones is HBO, not ppv. Really, at this point, thats where it belongs.

Dan Rafael
  (5:33 PM)

There is zero -- I repeat ZERO -- chance of that.

Phil (Springfield, Mass)

Harder to get in: Baseball HOF or Boxing HOF?

Dan Rafael
  (5:34 PM)

Baseball for sure. To many boxing voters seem to think one big win is enough to make it in.

Joe (Chicago)

Is HBO declining the Klitch-Chambers fight because of the date or the matchup? God knows they've taken worse fights, but it is understandable based on the date, considering its the first weekend of March Madness

Dan Rafael
  (5:35 PM)

They don't love the date, that's the biggest thing. It is also in Germany. However, there is still a chance that for the right price it will buy the fight.

psycho (LaLaLand)

is it true that the punisher has an HBO date April 10th? and who can it be he fights?

Dan Rafael
  (5:35 PM)

As far as I know, April 10 is not a date for Williams at this point, although the entire spring schedule is fluid right now.

Jericho (Wales)

Dan, your notebook is solid, but it seems to feature mostly American and Mexican fighters and very few updates on upcoming European fights. Is this a personal bias or are you trying to save on international phone rates?

Greenberg (NYC)

Dan I think Manny-Clottey should have been on HBO. Agree?

Dan Rafael
  (5:37 PM)

I'm glad you think that. But you clearly understand nothing about the economics of the sport. There is no way that could be live on HBO for what it would cost.

Derek (Edmonton, Alberta)

Hopkins vs Jones belongs on FNF.

Dan Rafael
  (5:37 PM)

Why would you do that to us?

Gutterdandy (NYC)

Dan, what's your take on the notion that Kassim Ouma got burned by the judges in his loss against Vanes Martirosyan?

Dan Rafael
  (5:39 PM)

It was a close fight and he didn't get the call. I thought the scorecards were too wide but I wouldn't have a problem with Vanes winning much closer.

Ted (NH)

Any thoughts on a better viewing experience of assault in the ring.. watching the fight first or the doc first?

Dan Rafael
  (5:41 PM)

Watch the fight first.

TC (Washington, DC)

Any word when Fernando Guerrero will be back?

Dan Rafael
  (5:43 PM)

He was supposed to be on an ESPN2 card next month but he has a hand injury and he was pulled off the card. He'll probably be back in April.

Brian (scottsdale, az)

how much of a step up is Nieves for Avolos next week?

Steve (Denver)

Is there a chance Paul Williams could fight Berto when he is ready to come back?

Dan Rafaelr
  (5:46 PM)

Highly unlikely since they have the same manager.

Marc (Potter, Wi)

What was the hardest single punch you have ever seen/heard at ringside?

Dan Rafaelr
  (5:47 PM)

There have been a lot but one that springs to mind is when Calvin Brock wasted Zuri Lawrence. That was scary and loud.

Mark (Minneapolis)

What is your favorite Tito fight to re-watch

Dan Rafaelr
  (5:48 PM)

Love watching him and Mayorga.

Juan (Los Angeles)

Dan What is the basis for the fued between Arum and Al Haymon- how long has it been going on

Dan Rafaelr
  (5:50 PM)

Most of it has to do with the way Mayweather left Top Rank.

chris (oklahoma city, ok)

What the heck happened to Calvin Brock? Did he fall off of the face of the earth or did Wlad push him off?

Dan Rafaelr
  (5:52 PM)

Cal suffered a serious eye injury and retired.

Johnny (Puerto Rico)

Dan, Have you ever had a hot chick approach you at any boxing function and say she was a fight freak?

Dan Rafael
  (5:53 PM)

Yup.

chris (oklahoma city, ok)

Dan, were you at the Tito/Mayorga fight? that was the first fight I ever went to and had floor seats. Amazing night and the crowd was AMPED up!

Dan Rafael
  (5:54 PM)

Yes, I was and it was an awesome atmosphere. I remember that as the first bell rang it seemed like everyone in the arena stood up.

Joe (Ny)

Dan how do you get your vote in the hall of fame and how many votes is there altogether ?

Dan Rafael
  (5:54 PM)

I vote because I am a full member of the Boxing Writers Association of America. I am not sure how many voters there.

John (San Fran)

Is RJJ-Bhop really a rematch? They are basically different fighters at this point.

Dan Rafael
  (5:55 PM)

Yeah, it's a rematch because it's the second time they are fighting. DUH!

Darian (Chandler)

With 2010 off to an awful start, do you think the mometum the sport had built up over the last 2-3 years has been flushed down the toilet?

Dan Rafael
  (5:57 PM)

I wouldn't go that far but the start of '10 is awful.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

John from San Fran you just got Zuri Lawrenced!!!!!!!! lol

Brian (Philly)

Gamboa was a little over weight and Trinidad was alot over weight.

Dan Rafael
  (5:59 PM)

Gamboa was not overweight. He made 126 on the first try.

Nick (L.A.)

Who cares about the Winter Olympics...damn you HBO

Yuri (Monroeville)

Hey Dan,I know in the notebook it was said that HBO would want to do a Pavlik/Bute doubleheader, but if they can't what do you think of Bute vs Stieglitz and Miranda vs Andrade?

Dan Rafael
  (6:01 PM)

I don't think that is anything special of a card.

Braindamaged2too (The Asylum)

D-Man,who's calling the fights for HBO tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (6:02 PM)

The same crew that always calls BAD -- Bob Papa, Max Kellerman and Lennox Lewis.

Dan Rafael
  (6:03 PM)

Ok, Freaks, thanks for the chat. Hope you enjoy the fights tomorrow night and remember to check out the notebook, new p4p rankings this week, thet news stories and blogs. Talk you next week. Peace.
