Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:51 AM)

Hey everyone. Let's get this rolling early. Only two games, but they are monsters. Gettyup!

No Lo (long beach, ca.)

You are running the Raiders' draft. Give me your first 3 picks. Thanks.

Matt Williamson
  (11:55 AM)

Let's not get too into specific positions, but I would lean towards, LT, NT, OG in that order. A guy like Okung is very attractive early on. In the 2nd round, maybe you get a stud DT who is more of a two down player-but can really plug it up in the run game. Would like to see one more OLineman as well-maybe a versatile guy who can start his career as more of a 6th guy until grabbing ahold of a starting role. Get better up front and all of a sudden, those skill guys will improve. I know the elephant in the conversation though: QB. Trust me, I don't like Russell and while I do like Gradkowski, can he ever lead you to where you ultimately want to go? Probably not. But, I just can't see bringing in a high risk rookie again. In the 2nd and 3rd rounds though, I would consider it for sure.

justin (from Va)

do you think the redskins are making the right moves with their new coaching staff?

Matt Williamson
  (11:57 AM)

I do actually. I worry a little about Shanny's fit as a personnel evaluator-esp in free agency. But, adding Shanny on O and Haslett on D could really pay off. However...they just spent a fortune on Haynesworth and I don't really see him as an ideal 3-4 guy. Sure, he could do it, but that might really be a waste. I would play him at DE, but I keep hearing that he will be at NT. Also, I would bring back Campbell and let Shanny really work with him. Draft OL and RB.

Kenny (Washington)

is tim tebow really gonna change his position to TE when he gets to the nfl?

Matt Williamson
  (11:58 AM)

I tend to doubt it-at least initially. Surely a team will use say, a 3rd rounder, on Tebow and give him every chance to play QB. I have my doubts, but I also wouldn't be too critical of that scenario.

Garrett (Richmond, VA)

Who has the better chance at an upset - Jets or Vikings?

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

Vikes for sure. I picked the Jets in each of their two playoff games, but can't back them in this one. I just think Indy's passing fire power is too much and that Manning will score more points than the Jets' O will be able to manage. I am also picking the Saints, but that one is closer. Minny might have a lot of success running the ball with Peterson and to me, that should be their recipe. Well, at least dedicate more time to running the ball.

austin (phillly)

who do you believe will make the biggest offseason moves? both in draft and free agency?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Wow. Tough call considering it will be an uncapped year. You have to think of which organizations are the most aggressive-and wealthy. Washington comes to mind immediately. Dallas as well, but I also don't see glaring needs on the Cowboys' roster. Could see Baltimore being aggressive in trying to help their WRs and CBs.

kc (oakland)

Niners first 3 picks? I've seen some mocks w/ Spiller in rd1 -- someone going to snatch him up before Niners pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Could see Spiller falling-like MJD, C Johnson, etc. With the Niners, OL has to be priority #1 and I would like to see them add a right tackle and a guard with two of their top three picks. With that extra early one, they do have the chance to really take a luxury guy like Spiller-or maybe a real threatening outside pass rusher who might take a little time to learn OLB. Or maybe even a QB prospect.

Mike (Boca Raton)

A lot of people are saying the steelers go CB at pick 18 in round one, but i don't see one (of that value) being there when they pick. I think that the FS from Texas would be ideal if he was around. Ur thoughts, please?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

I very much agree, but as of right now, not sure that Thomas will still be sitting there. Also, this is shaping up to be a real good safety draft, so there could be value in round 2 and 3. I agree with the CB situation though. Which leads me to OL. I feel like PGH's OL would be more than fine if they could add just one star to the mix. Pouncey the center from Florida?

A. K. (york)

what do the bills need for a wildcard appearance? and do you feel resigning t.o. would be wise?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Yoy. They need a lot. Honestly, if I had to bet on one team to pick first in the 2011 Draft, it would be Buff. Well, maybe that is a slight exaggeration, but there is a reason that no one wanted the Bills Head Coaching job. They need a ton! Their QB situation is amongst the worst in the league. I think they have the worst OTs in the league. I wouldn't resign TO-too old-but then you need another WR for sure. Might shop Lynch by the way-just see what you can get. Would consider a TE as well, but would probably hold out hope that Nelson can contribute before long. On D, it is all decent, but a stud run stopping NT type would be great.

robert (hazard,ky)

do you think mike singletary is the right guy to lead the niners back to dominance?i just dont feel that hes the right fit

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Tough to say. I wouldn't call him a great game day coach-but he hasn't been a HC long at all and certainly should improve. He does sure seem to be a good motivator, but I also wonder how long that rah rah approach can last. He has improved the team. To me, next year will be a true test, as I expect their talent to be the best it has been in quite a while.

Steve (NYC)

did Miami take a major step towards competing for the AFC East title with the Mike Nolan hire?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

What a great hire! Fell into their laps. Certainly a nice get, but I don't see them as the AFC East favorite right now with just that addition. Still need the Jimmys and Joes on D. FS is a huge need. Their ILBs are slow and don't cover well. They are old at NT and OLB.

Matty (Enola, PA)

Matty, those Jets look alot like the 2005 Steelers, great running game, great defense and a young QB. I gotta root for them. what do u think?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Same here. My style of football and yes, I have said that a few times here on local PGH radio. However, give me Ben (even at that age) over Sanchez every day of the week.

JD (NO)

A Fluke game for Reggie Bush, or a glimpse of the future?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Well, the thing with Bush is that he is just so wildly inconsistent-even on a game by game basis. Part of that is NOrls' O as Payton features different guys all based on matchup, but I also think it has a lot to do with Bush. But-remember, Bush is also auditioning for a big contract. Never forget that. The other thing is health. Bush hasn't been healthy the entire season. Had knee injuries all during training camp and to start the year. Now, he certainly looks healthy.

TJ (Dallas)

If it really is an uncapped year, I'm far more interested in who will be cut rather than who will be signed. I think smart teams will dump their high priced players who aren't earning their contracts, say a Marion Barber.

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

There should be a lot of that...but then again, there always is. Gotta earn your keep in this league.

Confucius (Williamsburgh Park)

Confucius say road too tough for Favre. Also, Ovechkin taught lesson by wise Corsby tomorrow night.

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Confucius is very wise.

Blake (MN)

If the vikings did"t make the playoffs would leslie frazier have a head coaching job now?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

That is one thing I didn't understand about the Gailey hiring. Was Gailey THAT hot that Buff couldn't wait a few days or a few weeks? If you lose out on Gailey-oh well.

Clay (Charlotte)

So IF Pep gets franchised again and IF they trade Pep for, say, a first and a second. Do you take a QB with the first pick or do you let Matt Moore be the starter?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Depends who is there of course, but I would have no issue with them going QB. I like Moore, but like I said about Gradkowski and alluded to with A Smith, can he be the guy that can have your team playing at this time of the year? I have my doubts. It also wouldn't break my heart to see Carolina draft a WR very high.

Micah (Charlotte)

If you're the panthers, what do you with with your QB situation? Start Moore, try to trade for someone like Rosenfels, or try to trade up for a 1st rnd pick since they don't have one now

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

To continue...I wouldn't trade for someone like Rosenfels. I would either 1. Stick with Moore and surround him with better talent or 2. Use a high pick at QB.

Ryan (San Diego)

Yet another epic Chargers choke job. Do you think they need to find a new kicker? I do...he's barely 50% in the playoffs and as past games have shown us, many times in the playoffs these games come down to 3 points. The Chargers last 3 playoff losses at home, were all lost by 3 points and all games in which Kaeding missed a makeable fg

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

I hear you. What a miserable situation. I don't blame the guy for missing the 56 yarder, but the other two (& others in the playoffs) are inexcusable. But-if you have watched the playoffs at all-you must realize that their is a kicker shortage all of a sudden in the NFL...and Kaeding is the most accurate guy ever! Maybe you can trade him and start anew.

Brett (Atlanta)

Matt, really apreciate your work. You seem to be one of the few I read who realizes how good the Saints secondary is when healthy, which they weren't after the first month of the season. I allows Gregg Williams to be Gregg Williams. As to the No-Minn game, this may be simplistic, but I really think the difference comes down to the home field. I think it negates a huge advantage Minn's D-line had on Sunday against the Cowboys and correspondingly will cause their O-line trouble in containing the Saints blitz packages and Will Smith.

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

First off, thanks and yes, I do believe that NOrls has one of the best secondaries in the league when healthy-which they are. I also believe that crowd noise is a massive advantage this week. I just turned in a piece that dissects the Vikes' pass rush vs. the Saints protection. It will prob go up on Friday I would guess. Check it out...but I favor the Saints in that crucial matchup and in this game overall for many of the same reasons that you mention.

M.C. Rauh (Buffalo, NY)

Any Ideas who Chan Gailey will consider for Coordinators? Do you see the Bills going to the 3-4 defrnse?

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

Thought about them switching to a 3-4, but I don't like it. I don't see a NT. Stroud would be fine at DE. It might help Maybin to make him a OLB, but it would kill guys like Schobel. Plus, read back a few posts as to all the Bills' O needs. If you go 3-4, you really increase the D needs. Too much to take on.

Mike (Akron)

Hey Matty Ice, is it realistic that the Browns, with Heckert now, make a move for Kevin Kolb? I have never seen the guy play but I have heard nothing but good things about him. Your thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

I think so and I would commend them for that move. Might Philly send Clev Kolb and Buff Vick? Then they draft their own guy again? Anyways, Kolb is very interesting and Clev should really want this guy, but at what cost? I bet Philly can get a real nice package for him right now. Such a QB shortage and so many teams in need. For example, I would much rather have Kolb right now than Matt Cassel from a year ago-and KC gave up a very early 2nd rounder for Cassel.

Confucius (Williamsburg Park)

Confucius say Manning handles blitz and Dallas Clark hero.

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Confucius is really on top of things today. Keep drinking from that fountain. It is the nectar of the gods.

Jeff (New Orleans)

Matt, I can't say for sure the Saints will win, but its gonna be one hell of a party if they do. Its been a long time coming.

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

Would be amazing. Tell me if I am wrong. Let's just say that the Saints lose a tough one. Think that crowd still gives them a standing O/round of applause after a loss? I am picking NOrls, but just sayin. I just get the feeling that your community really has a great appreciation for their football team right now.

Eric (Chicago)

So when did Confucius move to Williamsburg Park? Thought he was the man somewhere in a small town in China, no?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

He's everywhere Brother. Actually, that is the perfect spot for him. Sacred grounds.

Ryan (NJ)

If BMarsh somehow leaves Denver, is WR really a big need there? And also, what would their other needs be for the offseason

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

DL is their biggest need to me right now. I also see QB as a need if you can land a true big time prospect. Yes, WR is prob a need either way, as Marshall can't be in for the long haul there. ILB also makes sense. They have a lot of needs and a lot of guys up for free agency. Could see Denver going backwards next year.

Anthony (NYC: NY)

What's your take on the Weis and Crennel hire for the Chiefs? Nobody seems to really be talking about it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

They are proven. Good moves. The Midwestern Patriots. However, sometimes I think teams try to hard to emulate other more successful franchises like the Pats. Gotta be yourself. More importantly, they don't have good players in KC. That is a problem.

Matty (Enola, PA)

Matty I really think a team picks up Jason Campbell and he steps up and becomes a good QB? where do you see him going?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

I wouldn't let him out of Washington, but I do have a hunch that he departs. Whoever gets him MUST be patient. Install a system and actually stick with it. Have a real solid running game around him and let him be a pocket passer and slowly gain confidence.

Benjamin (Albany)

is Glenn Dorsey still valuable to a 4-3 team? his "vaunted" first step has never seemed up to par in the pro game....

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

It sure hasn't. I know he has had some weight issues and some injury problems as well. Plus, he is incredibly miscast as a 3-4 DE. I think I would take a chance on him if I were a 4-3 team in need of a DT, but probably wouldn't give up a top 50 pick for him. Plus, he makes a lot of money.

Mike (Dallas)

Who do the cowboys need to draft out of this class? Mabe an offensive lineman or do u think we should look for another qb to develop for tony romos replacement like Jimmy Clausen out of Notre Dame?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Not a QB! Romo is their guy and Dallas fans should be very happy about that. I don't see massive needs in Big D. Would love to see that D with a stud talent at safety though. Another WR would be tempting. Another OT to add to the mix makes sense as well. Nice situation to be in. Real nice.

Benjamin (Albany)

btw what did you think of the mock draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

I did read it last week after the chat and was quite impressed. Didn't agree with everything and don't see Dunlap as a 3-4 DE, but overall, I thought it was real well done. Keep it up!

Mike (Boca Raton)

no disrespect to L.T., but do you think that the Chargers hurt themselves by running with him v. Sproles when Sproles was/is clearly the better player at this point in their respective careers?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

No question in my mind. Hey, I love LT as much as the next guy and everyone seems hesitant to be critical of him...but he is DONE.

Jake (Baltimore)

Should the Ravens give up what would be required to land Brandon Marshall? Is Boldin really that much of an upgrade? The Ravens definitely need help at WR but I'm just not sure where it will come from.

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

Would much rather have Marshall than Boldin. Just think he is the superior player right now and better suited to be a #1 WR than Boldin. But-Boldin is their type of guy and surely better than whoever they would take with their first round pick for the immediate future at WR. Blocker. Tough-although injured a lot. Maybe Boldin and a 4th for the Ravens' 1st? You in Jake?

Benjamin (Albany)

with the Bucs probably losing Antonio Bryant, a deep Dline draft and two 2nd rounders could they consider Dez Bryant with the third pick? Dez and Bryant seem like a match made in heaven.

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

I can buy that. DT has to be need #1, but it really bothers me when teams use high draft picks on QBs, insert them in the lineup and don't help them with WR help and the like. Not sure they let AB leave, but even with him around, I bet Freeman wouldn't mind throwing to AB, K2 and Dez. That ain't bad-and they have a solid OL and running game. Now you are talking on O. But, I also can't see passing on Suh or McCoy.

Joe (Phily)

should the eagles trade mcnab and stick with vick for the long term?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Nope. Would much rather stick with Kolb than Vick. What have we seen of Vick in the last three years to make us think that he can be a starting QB in this league? He was never a great passer to begin with and I think his time in the clink has slowed down his wheels as well.

Jake (Baltimore)

I'm not giving up a 1st for Boldin and a 4th. He's a bigger version of Derrick Mason - not a guy I'm parting with my 1st round pick for in that deal.

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Well said and Ozzie's track record with first rounders is awesome. Plus, would rather see a burner for Flacco to use his big arm with. I bash the guy, but Boldin aint that bad either! Certainly an upgrade to a contending team. But I hear ya-too rich.

Adam (San Diego, CA)

Matt, I think I can hear Marty Schottenheimer laughing, even though he is 2,000 miles away from San Diego.

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Thought the same thing. Also, why didn't Buff just hire Marty?

I Got Ripped in 4 Weeks (I'm Crazy Ripped)

Did you like the Perry Fewell hire for the Giants?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

I do. A lot. Seems to really be a players coach and I felt like the whole Bills team played hard for him as interim HC. Does Coughlin have to worry about his seat heating up? I think he does.

Scott (Maryland)

It is apparent the Skins need a new O-line. However Shanny has always seemed to build great lines and great production from whoever is running the ball. Was it Shannys members on the line or was it his scheme? My question is would drafting CJ Spiller at number 4 or even trading down a few picks to get CJ then focusing on the O-line in round 2, 3 and the addition pick from trading down?

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

I see what you are saying, but not only is the Skins line bad-and old-but it is not Shanny's type of athletic move guys. It really needs an overhaul. Can you bypass OL in round one? Sounds very dangerous to me. But yes, he has gotten tremendous production from mid round guys who many thought were too small. Spiller behind a terrible OL might not end well. Maybe the 2011 draft is when you get your stud RB as a last piece of the puzzle. Also, as good as Spiller is, he doesn't really fit Shanny's one cut mold either...and he has also gotten great production from mid round RBs as well.

Benjamin (Albany)

why did the Browns run defense improve so dramatically when Shaun Rogers got hurt and went on IR?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

I don't have an answer for you on that, but it is a good observation. I think Rogers is a tremendous player though. I certainly think that it really helped that the O become decent and did a much better job of running the ball and keeping the D fresh.

Ken (Redondo Bch)

is O. Pace career over and should he go out as a Ram

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

His career is over.

Craig G. (Fairfield, California)

Hey Matt, what the hell are the Bills thinking? Isn't this the perfect situation to give a young coordinator a chance?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

I thought so. Start fresh. This organization does not get enough heat for being amongst the worst in the league.

Dave (San Diego)

In defense of Kaeding, his playoff misses were from: 40, 54, 45, 48, 36, 56, 40 for an average of 45.7. Take out the terrible misses from the two Jets games (which I know are huge) and his average miss is 49. Not a horrible job. Plus, nobody seems to remember him going 4-for-4 in NE in the AFC Championship game. The dude blew it this weekend, but I don't think he's a terrible playoff kicker.

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Excellent points and I did mention the 56 yarder. You have to keep the guy if you are SD-unless you get a lot in trade. But, he is a fair weather kicker and some guys just don't perform well in the clutch. I don't want him on the free throw line with no time on the clock to win the game-get my drift?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Justin (Ohio)

Because after Shaun got hurt the Browns played the Steelers(who couldn't run the ball), Raiders, Chiefs. The teams stunk. And we bring Mangini back because he beat 3 crappy teams. Makes no sense.

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Also a very good point(s).

Tarek (NYC)

Matt Love your work, should the Raiders cut T. Kelley and go after two DT's? Or is he a decent player that they should hold on to?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

There is potential there and in an uncapped year, he doesn't cripple the cap. So I would say you stick with him for another year and see if you can coach him up. Still, a NT next to him wouldn't hurt.

Matt (DC)

Matt, any chance that Randy Moss ends up with the Broncos given the Moss/McDaniels connection?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Why would he ever leave NEng? I don't follow. The Pats have a WR need, not a surplus at the position and he is still awfully good.

Benjamin (Albany)

Ralph Wilson's "situation" inherently means a lack of long term job security.... and no FAs will go to Buff.... once the team is sold the job will become more attractive

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Perhaps-and I don't disagree with you. But-they still have massive personnel needs.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub now that the Chargers season is over, what do you believe will be AJ's next move with LT & Merriman? Also can Merriman get back to being a stud again?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Would let them both walk. LT is DONE and Merriman is expensive and non productive. Would it shock me if Merriman went to NEng and resurrected his career? No, but English was drafted for this reason and Merriman has off the field and injury strikes against him.

Katelyn (Syracuse, NY)

Althought there are teams who could take QBs (Rams, Redskins, Seahawks, Buffalo, Broncos), all of them have big needs elsewhere as well. Is it possible that Clausen and Bradford could slip big time?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

No question, esp because as of right now, I don't see either one as a GREAT prospect. In most drafts, would they be in the running for the first QB taken? I am not so sure. I do like Bradford though in a dome like STL.

Rob (Big Easy)

Matt, I keep going round and round on this, but how many points do the Saints need to score to win? 30+? As to your question, I'll stand and cheer in a close lose, but win, and it's on to Bourbon Street!!!

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Good to hear. I think 30 wins it.

Tarek (NYC)

Is Peyton the best Qb you have ever seen? Or are the 3 guys from the 80's in that conversation?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Well, I am 36, so when Elway came into the league, I was 10. Not exactly in my scouting prime-but he tends to be my choice. Who did Elway have around him? The 3 Amigos? Okay, name them. Right. Peyton is hard to argue with though, but I still have to give Brady the slight edge career wise between those two. Barely though-and Peyton has a great chance to advance past him very soon.

Benjamin (Albany)

with Roos, Johnson, Young and Britt will the Titans field an elite offense next season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Elite is strong. Love their OL and Johnson obviously is a stud. Could see them getting even more from their TEs as well. But, while I like VY, he isn't elite. That being said, I am drafting D if I am in charge of the Titans.

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Great chat guys. It really was. Excellent questions today. Do it again next Wed. Take care and enjoy Championship Weekend. Great stuff.
