Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Back again for our weekly chat. Thanks for joining me. Baseball tryouts start tonight for my AAA team, so forgive me if I start talking about RBI's and ERA's. I've got Massenet's "Cleopratre" playing, and I'm feeling good. Let's go."It's the *&%**#@ Catalina Wine Mixer".

John (Akron (Ohio))

What do you think is the most likely trade the Cavs will make?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Troy Murphy.

Josh (Memphis)

Lots of people are talking about how surprising the Grizzlies have been playing of late, but no one really mentions that this is the youngest team in the league. How much more impressive does that make their play?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Amazingly so.

Josh (NYC)

How much more love would Dirk get if he were a black guy from the United States?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

I think it's that he's not from America, and is not an electrifying athlete, more than anything else.

Alex (Santa cruz)

kevin martin for devin harris...who says no first?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

The Kings. They just threw up in their collective mouths.

Alex (Cleveland)

Team Conan or Team Leno?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Team NBA League pass.

Nick (Cleveland)

Thorpe, chances Cavs run away with the East? They have the fewest remaining road games (17-8) and 23 more home games and are already 3 games up on Boston.

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Indeed.

Justin (NJ)

Honestly, if Derrick Rose (in his current form) and John Wall were in the draft, wouldn't Wall still be taken first?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Yes.

Ryan (Minneapolis)

David,What are your thoughts on Corey Brewer?Ryan

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Rapidly improving. December was a career best month, and he's been even better in January. Did not shoot well the other day, but made huge plays for them down the stretch to win that game. Can be a terrific defender in time.

Ludwig Hasbauer (Germany)

tyreke and martin could be special together, but what's wrong with thompson? why is hawes so soft?

Tim (Freson, CA)

Coach Thorpe, I'm sure you,ve been reading about how Evans and Martin are bad fits, but it seems to me that until we find some players to who can protect the paint and score inside, it does not matter. Also, do you agree that we don't need Martin if our offense is "let Tyreke dribble until he either gets a shot or can't get a shot" then pass?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Lots of these kinds of questions about Sacramento. Until they fix their paint issues, they will be doomed as a below average team. I'm sure they know this.

Noam (Israel)

Thorpedo, Chad Ford said he thinks the Suns might move Amar'e. Where do you think he fits? I doubt the Suns get equal value for him, but better than losing him for nothing

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

He'd be great in Chicago, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

He'd be great in Chicago, right?

Curtis (NYC)

The anticipation of a blockbuster trade is killing me. Which team in your expert opinion is making the first eye opening trade? I am not talking about cap relief, I am talking about playoff/championship altering trade.

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

I'm no expert on this front. Need help making a lyup, I'm your man.

Michael (San Antonio)

Will Farrell's most underated movie?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

I enjoy Anchorman way more now than I did. Actually almost walked out of it in the theater. Love it now.

dylan (alaska)

step brothers is a great movie, whats wrong with danny granger? can he be a top 12 player in the L?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

I'm not sure, but when you are struggling from the field it's tough to get everything else in gear.

Josh (Memphis)

OJ Mayo's pts rbs and assts are identical to his averages last year, but he seems to be playing much better. Thoughts on his development and future?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

I'm very impressed with his demeanor and focus. He's playing the game the right way and is a rock for them. I never thought he'd be an all-star, but he's good enough to have a huge playoff series and carry them to another round. Maybe in another year.

Noah R (Miami,Fl)

Beasley keeps impressing me, his numbers keep stable and he is getting more and more double doubles and 20 point games...any thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

He's super talented, and in a great franchise with a very good coach. Can't help but improve.

Nick (NY)

It's been beat to death, but what is your Knicks starting 5 for 2010-11?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

No clue, bit I'd expect Gallo and Lee to be in the mix.

Big fan (Portland)

David, thanks for friending me on facebook. It's cool to see inside your world a little bit and I appreciate how hard it must be for all of you covering the league to do so and still have a life. You are a good man, David, or the best actor since Paul Newman.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Thanks. Things like Facebook help connect us all. I hope one day I'll get advice on travel to new places from my facebook friends, just like they ask me questions about the NBA.

Kevin (Cleveland, OH)

How many Laker fans puked in their soup upon seeing Simmons' article today?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

It's a trick question. No on in LA is having soup yet-it's still morning there.

J.G. (OKC)

What's your take on the development of the Thunder's rookies thus far on an overachieving team? Do you think Harden is still trying to find how best to impact the team in a niche role (be it more of a shooter or playmaker generally), much like Serge Ibaka, as the energy big who blocks shots and rebounds, and Eric Maynor, as the 'limit mistakes' and initiate the offense backup point guard, seem to have settled into theirs?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Overachieving team? Negative. They are good and talented and very well coached. I'm a fan of all 3 rooks.

Phil (NJ)

If t-mac plays in the all-star game, do you think that's a good idea to showcase himself? If he wins the MVP award, then all the teams will jump on him, don't you think so? I would love to see him in Miami and team up with D-Wade, a nice 1-2 punch. keep in mind, we're talkin' about Tracy McGrady here, he has a lot left. your thoughts Mr. Thorpe.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I can't see teams caring about the all-star game.

Sunno (Fiji)

Does Tyreke deserve some All Star credit

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Really? They're 10 games below .500 and have been struggling greatly since mid-December.

Mathew (Sacramento)

Coach, with BJennings shooting percentage dipping below 39% how long before Stephen Curry passes him on your rankings. As far as running a team and winning games who's future is brighter?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

I liked Curry better than Jennings in June, changed my opinion in July, and now I'm not sure. A lot depends on who they are playing for. But Curry has a chance to be really really good, at least Jennings' equal.

Terry (Madison)

What's your take on the all-star game voting?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

I have none. Have not watched it in years and won't this year either. Putting it opposite Valentines Day (weekend)? C'mon!! Mr. Stern, we're trying to have a civilization here!

Brandon (NY)

Do you think that if Wade does not go to the the Bulls if available, should they sign Joe Johnson who i believe is a better fit for their team to begin with?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Sure, but they'll have to get in line.

Raymond (SLC)

Thorpe, I know you are a big movie buff, but what about TV? In your time, who's the best tv actor you've ever seen?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

"Burt" from Soap was terrific. "Creed" is great now, as is "Johnny Drama" on "Entourage". But for the money, it has to be "Mickey" from "Seinfeld". I heard he was 6'2 in real life. Incredible.

Kobe Berg (Seattle, WA)

Hey Coach, love your work. I've read that Roy Williams said that John Wall is the best PG prospect since JKidd. But when I watch Wall, I see a guy that CAN play PG, but is too good a scorer to play it full time at the NBA level. Isn't he more like DWade, who has PG skills but is a natural scorer, than a pass first PG like JKidd? Thx.

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

No, he's a real pg in the best and pure sense.

Ludwig Hasbauer (Germany)

coach thorpe! what can I do to get better change of direction speed, and quicker on the first steps?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Practice them, and get low.

Dave (MN)

Can you name some of the nicest guys in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Way too many to mention. But a player once told me that Carlos Boozer was the nicest man he'd ever known.

Aldrin (NJ)

The Nets are terrible. we all know that, it's become a laughing stock, but for some reason, i can't help but think that it's the system and forcing the ball to Brook in the post, who is not a go-to guy just yet but more of a pick and roll guy, is hurting the team. I like their young wing players in Devin, Lee, and CDR. i know this may sound silly but I still like the the future in the Nets. change the offense, see what happens. your thoughts?

Bill (Jersey)

Coach, I saw you ate a Nets game recently. What's your take on this team going forward?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Lots of Nets questions. I think Lopez is a franchise center, not sure yet about Yi, though I think he'd be very good if used right (think Bargnani). Lee has proven he can start for a championship contender. That's their future I think-Devin wants out.

Tim (Katy, TX )

What separates Mayo from being a star?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Inability to make things happen off the dribble. But he can still get there, just a bit tougher.

Kenny (FL)

I saw that the Lakers are trying to get Kirk Hinrich. Would you like that for the Lakers?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

I bet they could help him find his game.

Raj (Sacramento)

Do you think this kings/bulls trade rumor makes any sense. Tyrus Thomas for Nocioni...I guess Chicago still likes Nocioni.

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Perfect sense. Kings need shot blockers, Bulls need shooting.

Robert (toronto)

Other than the bosh rumors, do you believe that toronto will be listening to offers for other players? If so, can you tell me the potential deal that you believe would happen

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Sure they are listening. Toughness and defensive minded wings are what they need.

jeffro (bk,ny)

as a Nets fan in ny, i'm pretty excited about the Nets moving here, and moreso if they can land John Wall. that wouldn't leave room for Devin tho, will they move him for another stud at a different position?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Wall is their guy and they'd move Harris in a second if they could.

Bill (Austin, TX)

Do you think the Spurs have a legit shot to win the chmapionship this year? And if no, why not?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

I do, and have since the summer.

Eric (New York, NY)

Thorpezilla! More impressive this season - Grizz or Bobcats? And when does Zach Randolph get his official "we were wrong (but can you blame us?)" apology from the ESPN NBA staff?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Grizz, but Cats are surely in the running. It's a coaches league, pure and simple.

Dave (Phoenix)

Don't laugh at me, but I think you should list Goran Dragic in your top 20 sophomores. I did some clicking around on basket-reference.com and he comes up in top 5 to 20 in all categories of sophomores, across all positions. Seen him much this year? He has really improved.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Agree totally. I'm watching him, always watching.

Mike (Indiana)

What are the chances of the Bynum for Bosh trade? Has there been any more discussions between both teams?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Bynum is an all-star caliber player, but Bosh is a potential MVP of the league. Have to be more to that deal for Raps.

Jeff (Chicago, IL)

Understanding that you'll most likely respond with a snide remark on the state of the Bucks, I ask this anyhow. Why doesn't Andrew Bogut get any recognition for his defensive prowess? He leads the league in charges taken, is T-5th in blocks, and T-10th in rebounding.

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Snide remarks for the Bucks? Why? Bogut is considered to be a terrific center, period.

Derrick Rose (Chicago)

Why haven't I developed a 3 point shot? It would make me infinitely harder to guard, correct?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Correct, but it's not that easy. You are doing fine, now. Keep it up! Plenty of time to add to your game.

Mike (Dallas)

Thorpedo, who is the Mavs future poing guard? Most say Roddy Buckets but i say Nick Calathes...

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Tough call. Calathes is special, but Buckets might be too. Nice to have two guys like that.

Juwan Howard (Portland)

Um Carlos Boozer nicest man your player source has met? Clearly he wasn't on one of the 20 teams I've played for.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

He wasn't. And I watched Keyon Dooling a lot the other night, and he's just a great all-around guy who was raised right. Great locker room guy.

Bernard (Chicago)

Aside from the obvious big name guys, which college coaches do the best job of preparing their kids to be successful at the pro level?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

I'm not sure any of them do, and it's not their job to do so. They have to win games, not develop players for the NBA. The evidence is clear on this. The best players typically are guys who went to college for one year or not at all.

dan (germany berlin)

will ricky rubio have an impact in the nba one day? is it enough to have an high basketball iq with some excellent passing skills and without an athletic body?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Athletic is a funny word. If you mean "high flyer", then no. But think of CP3 and Nash-how many dunks do they have? But they are terrific athletes. I love Rubio's upside and think he'll be an amazing pg one day in the NBA. He leads players to buckets.

Dave (Phoenix)

Love your chats, David! Earl Clark is floating through his rookie season like he's high. I figure that's just his personality, and that despite this he can still produce at NBA level, but what do you recommend as the BEST next step to develop him?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

A month in the D-League, and then a stern discussion of his future.

Billbsails (Blaine Washington)

David: Is Brockman a ligimate future starter (starting tonight in Alanta) ? He seems to change the game for the better for the Kings whenever he goes in ( rebounds.deflections ). Is he more of a power forward even though he doesn't score ?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Not a long term answer. If he's starting, it's more a message to Hawes.

Chad (Wisconsin)

Do you have any instructional DVD available for the people that can't get to Florida to work with you?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Yes, I have two out there that I did years ago.

Venkat (India)

Troy Murphy for Lebron, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Brilliant!

Rob (memphis)

Thorpe, why is everyone talking about the "surprising" Kings? They lost 8 of 10 even before Martin returned, and still can't win on the road. The Grizz is the best story going!!!!!!! Agreed?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Yes.

Adam (Columbus, OH)

Is it a crime that Monta Ellis gets all the star billing in Golden State when Curry and Maggette are far more efficient players. It's easy to score 36 when you loft up 39 shots.

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Not a crime. This is the reality of the NBA.

DiehardNFFLbarnone (Newton)

Who do you think should coach the Nets next season? Please answer.

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Dave Joerger, assistant coach in Memphis. Young coach who knows how to win games with a young squad.

Damon (San Fernando)

Coach, Jordan Hill has a PER of just under 19. Is this a fluke or should the Knicks play him more?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I'd like them to play him for a month straight, then re-evaluate.

Michael (San Antonio)

David!!! If the Spurs had to give up Hill or Blair in a trade, who do they part with?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Hill, but I don't see it happening.

Mike (Dallas)

who should the mavericks look to draft after the season end, mabe a 2 guard? or a center?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Yes and yes, though later in round 1 a sg is more likely.

DeJuan Blair (San Antonio)

How many teams do I have to dominate to get some ROY consideration??

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

You need more than 18 mins a game.

Ryan (Boston)

what is it going to take to get the Kings front court to play like a front court? Both Thompson and Hawes have seemed promising the past couple of years, but this year it is just ugly. When do you stop grading off of promise and cut our losses to get real big men?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

It's the question of the day. They could have had Hibbert over Thompson, and probably traded Hawes for Noah last 2 years.

Stefan (Denmark)

David Thorpe DVDs, Videos & Books http://www.championshipproductions.com/cgi-bin/champ/auth/1945/David-Thorpe.html

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Thanks Stefan!!

johnny (toronto)

What are your thoughts on Demar Derozan's progression so far?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I think he has shown enough promise to ensure that he'll be given every chance to shine for the next year. Meaning, he won't get moved or they won't bring in a vet 2 because they think he can be the answer.

Dave (NY)

Classic Mickey Abbot line: "The kid I stand in for, he's growing. He was four feet last month, now he's like four-two and a half. He shot up two and a half inches. I can do four-two, four-three is a stretch, any higher than that and I'm gonna be out on my ass doing that paralegal crap."

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Maybe the most brilliant add-in to a cast since "Thing".

Mike (Oklahoma City)

If the Grizzlies are the best story going, then where does that place the Thunder? Surely Memphis isn't a better team than OKC.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

OKC is the most improved easily, but many of us thought they'd be playoff contenders.

Graham (Chicago)

How can Noah not be mentioned in the top 5 for Most Improved Player??

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

I don't know. I'll talk to my man Mo Brooks.

BullsFan (Chicago)

Your opinion: What if the Bulls used Deng as a center piece for a trade for, say, Amare and went after Rudy Gay in the off-season?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

I would not be surprised to see him traded, but this year he's been by far their best player.

Tim (Katy, TX )

Who's your favorite quarterback ever?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Doug Williams and Danny Wuerffel.

vnzla81 (chicago)

do you think that murphy is really going to help the cavs to win a title?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

He would be a big help.

Aaron (Chicago)

What do you think James Johnson's ceiling is? He's starting to calm down a little bit, but clearly still has a ton of growing to do. What say you?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

I don't think he'll ever have the chance to grow, playing behind either Deng or a free agent they sign this summer.

Souvik (Kolkata,India)

Well i am far away frm your hoopland. Bt i am a big twolf fan. The feelings from different crners fr my team is so much different. How do u rate the wolves in the long term n ou GM Kahn

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

I don't see Flynn as a long term starter at pg. Like him better as a combo off the bench. Love K Love. Like Brewer and like Ellington too. Jefferson is a machine on offense, and he's showing a great attitude, but moving him for a better two guard would be smart.

Bill (Chicago)

Will you watch the "Dunk-In" during the half time of the Rookie-Sophmore game? Who do you think will win it?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I'll be hanging with my Valentine that weekend and will not turn on the tv for 3 days.

Justin (NJ)

What do you think of Shaq's suggestion of a "STAR" dunk contest with the half of the money going to Haiti?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Absolutely love it.

Citvilas (Atlanta)

Mickey from Seinfeld is not 6'2" in real life. He is 4'. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0940173/bio

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

If that's true, then I'll have to reconsider.

Joe (Co)

Mr Thorpedo, high school question here. I would like to know your opinion, if a player is good enough will he be offered a college scholarship even if his team has a horrible record, or is there a lot of politics that get in the way?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

There are no politics. If a player can help a coach win enough games in college that the coach can move up and get a better job, he will offer the scholarship.

Buster (CA)

higher ceiling and why? rudy gay vs. danny granger

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Rudy, younger and just as talented. Maybe even more so.

Karl (Mi)

You gotta stop with Deng being the Bulls best player stuff. By any fair look at the stats including PER tells that Rose is superior. Deng is too limited. He cannot create his own shot or a shot for anyone else.

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Rose is clearly superior at getting his own shot. And he's playing better than Deng now, and has a bigger upside than Deng. But for the season, Deng has been better. I suspect that by this time next year, Rose will be that guy. Gordon was their best player last year.

Mike (Akron)

Hey thorpe, what do you think of Andy Varejao? Has he impressed you this season? Do you think he has the goods for All Defensive team?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Has he ever. Yes he does, though he does not put up the blocks/steals stats he probably needs. I love that guy.

Jrue Holiday (Philly)

Why aren't I starting and what do you think my ceiling is in this league as a starting PG?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

I think you will be a long time starter. Maybe not an all-star, too early to tell. But very solid for years.

cameron (chicago)

I know he's not a future all-star or anything, but Taj Gibson is playing a solid role as a rookie for the Bulls. You never mention him in your rookie break downs.

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Sure I do. And he's been in my top 10 for a few weeks too.

Brian (Greensboro, NC)

Beasley for Horford, who says no?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

The Hawks, and they hung up the phone in the process.

John (Dallas)

What would you do with Josh Howard? Is it time for Dallas to move on, or is there too much potential there to give up on?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

He's 30 isn't he?

Tommy (Chicago)

Whoa, Ben Gordon was their best scorer last year, not best player. That is a big difference.

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Right, but he was both last year.

Mike (Charlotte )

David, Gerald Wallace deserves some All Star love does he not?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Without doubt.

Mark (Madison, WI)

I couldn't agree with you more about Varejao. I went to the Pacers/Cavs game last year just so that I could get a chance to see Lebron in person. After the game, all that I could talk about was how Varejao was unbelievable against the pick and roll and as a help side defender.

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Yep.

Michael (San Antonio)

Thorpe, why are you so good at chatting?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Years of practice.

Mark (Florida)

What's wrong with the Celtics? I don't believe it's age. I think it's a tema that isn't interest in the regular season.

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

I'm not sure. But injuries have been a factor. I'm not counting them out.

Jeff (NYC)

Better building block - Gallo or Chandler?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

gallo.

Dan (SD)

Seems like this rookie class has a quite a number of NBA contributers but very few stars. Is that fair?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Yes. As expected.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Time's up this week. Thanks to all of you. Back next week. Be safe and have a good week and weekend.
