How is Kentucky going to handle being number 1?
Quite well based on the schedule.Kentucky will be challenged and have close games because of its immaturity still in those situations. But I don't see a Kansas State-like atmosphere for the Wildcats until Vandy, Tennessee and Miss State.
And even those atmospheres I don't think would equal Kansas State. A rocking Tennessee would come the closest.
How was I the only one that saw this coming? Should i make room next to the gold medal and last years coach of the year award for another coach of the year award?
Yes. If this continues Dixon edges out Jim Boeheim for Big East coach of the year and possibly national coach of the year.
Andy, how does a 6-loss North Carolina team rank higher than a 2-loss Baylor team? I feel like Baylor is not ranked high enough and North Carolina should not be ranked at all.
Everyone handles the polls differently. UNC did beat Michigan State and Ohio State, with Evan Turner. Baylor doesn't have a win close to that. Also, you can look at UNC and Baylor and simply judge that one team is better than the other based on talent, even if they're not playing as well.
What are dukes chances to get a 1 seed come tournament time and do you think they sweep unc this year?
Duke will be in the discussion but I would say the Blue Devils are behind Kentucky, Texas, Kansas, Syracuse and Villanova in the chase for a No. 1 seed.
Does this year's Gator team confuse you as much as it does me? How do they beat MSU and lose to South Alabama and Richmond? Are they are tourney team this year? Is Boynton a 1 and done player?
They don't confuse me. The Gators are limited. They are a solid, not great team. They are deficient at a few positions, rely heavily on Erving Walker and Kenny Boynton. Alex Tyus, Vernon Macklin and Dan Werner have hardly been consistent. This Gators' team will make the NCAAs but not last too long.
Andy, love the work, keep it up! I was wondering how long of a rope does Donovan have to get Florida back to at least making the tournament every year? When you pay a coach as much as Florida does you at least expect to make the tounrey every year.
He has as long a rope as he needs. Jeremy Foley is the best AD in the country. Donovan won two national titles. The Gators got burned by Nick Calathes leaving early (he shouldn't) and Marressee Speights (he should have stayed at least one more year). There were a few recruiting mistakes. Florida will be back as one of the three best teams in the SEC on a regular basis.
How surprised are you at UVa's success under first-year coach Tony Bennett, and how far do you think these young 'Hoos can go this year in the ACC and beyond?
I shouldn't be. Tony Bennett has consistently maximized his talent. The Cavs are defending better than a year ago under Dave Leitao. It's still early but if UVA goes 9-7 in the ACC, that's picking up six more wins, it might be hard to keep them out. Becuase to get to 9-7 the Cavs will have to take out a few other NCAA-bound ACC teams.
Do you think Maryland will make the tournament?
Yes.The Terps have found themselves the past few weeks. I expect that they will challenge for a top four to five ACC finish and be in the field.
A few weeks ago UAB was ranked and then turned around and lost to UVA who. Subsequently they were dropped from the rankings the next vote. Since then UVA has taken down some impressive teams and no longer do they look like a major blemish on the Blazers' record. With that loss and an early season loss @ Kent State where do the Blazers stand?
Probably with the best non-conference resume of any CUSA team. If UAB can finish first or second in the regular season then the Blazers have a solid shot at getting an at-large berth if they don't win the conference tournament in Tulsa.
I have heard the praises but i feel they are a bit much. John Wall is good but chill on the hype. Personally i think there are better players and even true PG's (Ronald Moore, Siena Saints, Nations assist leader)i go to siena. Do you agree that Wall is overhyped?
No. Just wait until he's in the NBA. He is making plays beyond his years when the games are on the line. Does he get too much attention among the rest of the Kentucky team? Sure. But his talent is not overhyped.
Um, is UConn in danger of missing the NCAAs? The schedule isn't going to get easier.
I wouldn't say so yet. I expect the Huskies to win enough games in the Big East. But there is still plenty of work to do. If the Huskies are in a similar situation in a month then I would say it might be time to panic.
What does Scottie Reynolds have to do to get some love for POY?
He's in the chase with Wesley Johnson for Big East player of the year and making a strong case for inclusion on the first-team all-American list.
Syracuse looks very good. But to go far in the tourney you need a dominating point guard. How far do you think they can go with what they got. Which isn't bad
Syracuse can win the title. Brandon Triche is growing into the position daily. He continues to make some big shots. The Orange can score and if their defense continue to fluster opponents then they can win the title. What are they doing wrong at this point?
Can the Big Ten get 4 teams into the Sweet Sixteen?
Sure.Michigan StateOhio StatePurdueWisconsinAll viable.
Is this the year Northwestern FINALLY makes the Dance?
There is still a lot of work to do but the Wildcats are fully capable. The schedule was frontloaded with a lot of difficult games. If the Wildcats can escape this stretch with at least three quality wins they should be good to go. Northwestern beat Purdue. That's one. The overall Big Ten record won't be the key but rather how many quality wins the Wildcats have by season's end.
Since UT lost lastnight do you think that UK will win out?
No. Somewhere in the SEC the 'Cats will fall.
Alrite, wherever i look, everyone site and every analysts says that the teams to beat in the BE are Cuse and Nova, and my reaction is "Didn't a certain team already beat Cuse" when is the media going to stop calling PITT a "surprise" team, and start calling them legit contenders. there are only 2 teams undefeated in BE play, and Cuse is NOT one of them.
Yes. There are three clear favorites right now with Nova, Cuse and Pitt. But West Virginia isn't dead yet. Georgetown nearly clipped 'Nova, too, and may have a run in it just yet. But I'll go with Cuse and/or Nova to get the top seed in the tournament.
What are the odds that Elias Harris will still be a Zag next year. Maybe assistant Tommy Lloyd should get COY for finding this kid :)
Not sure. He is a 20-year old freshman so he may test the draft for the one week you can this year.
What team is America not talking about who they should be?
I would say (even though they're ranked) BYU, Northern Iowa and still Cornell.
Fresno State alum (remember the Bee)? I understand why Steve Cleveland had to be hired, after Tarkanian, Lopes, Herran, etc. Has the time for a "good guy, no controversy" coach ended and time for the Dogs to go shopping for a new coach?
No. Cleveland did what he was supposed to do by cleaning up the program, recruiting top talent (Paul George) so let's still wait out. At 3-2 in the WAC don't just give up yet.
Which league has the best top 3 teams? Big East (Villanova, Syracuse, Pitt), Big 12 (Texas, Kansas, K St.), or Big Ten (Michigan St., Wisconsin, Purdue)?
Tough call. Tough call. I'd lean toward Big 12 by a nose over Big East and then Big Ten.
Predict the order of finish between UK, TN, and Vandy in the SEC East.
You called it.Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Florida.
Can you see a place/opportunity that Frank Martin would leave K-State for?
Not at this juncture. He's doing a fantastic job.
Thanks for the questions this week.Appreciate it.
