Aloha everyone. Thanks for coming out to the chat today! We are in the silly season of NBA rumors where just about everyone in the league is attached to some deal. We'll also keep an eye on the draft as most GMs are now out hitting the scouting trail and are bringing their own insights to the process. Let's roll.
Kevin Martin and Nocioni for ray allen
Danny Ainge can't afford it and I think the Kings are looking for more than just expiring contracts for Martin.
Chad, is it going to be another one of those anti-climatic trade deadlines?
Don't think so. GMs reporting A LOT of trade talk, activity. Too many teams are motivated to make a deal. I'm not sure we'll have 10 blockbuster trades ... but I bet we have 10 trades.
why does no one want Jarred Jefferies?
There's a market for him, but no one wants to give up an expiring contract in return and that's what the Knicks want.
would jamison for andre miller work or what do you see the wiz doing with him or caron butler
Probably works for Portland. But I don't think it works for Wizards. If they move Jamison or Butler they're going to want expiring contracts and young players. It will be a total rebuild (which makes their trade of the No. 5 pick to Minn last summer so painful in retrospect).
Has Sam Dalembert played himself into 'trade value' and are the sixers really shopping Iguodala/Dalembert to get under the 2011 tax?
They've been shopping Dalembert for 2 years. The Iguodala thing is new. I'm pretty skeptical they'd give those two guys away for T-Mac's expiring contract (T-Mac and AI on the same team ... wow). But I keep hearing enough rumblings about it that I think it has legs. If Darryl Morey can turn TMac into Iguodala ... I'm really impressed. That's a home run for the Rockets. As for Sixers fans ... a major disaster.
Please tell me there is some talk of Otis Smith trading Vince Carter. At this point I don't even care what the Magic get for him just as long as he gets sent away. He completely ruins the flow of their offense by making terrible decisions.
They're looking at a lot of things right now. They aren't happy with how the team fits together and seem to be deeply regretting letting Hedo go. I think anyone, short of Dwight Howard, could be had for the right deal ... but yes, I think Carter will be the focal point.
Should the Jazz try to make the playoffs instead of dumping Boozer and getting under the tax? With how inconsistent they have been I don't see how the revenue from a few playoff games can offset the luxury tax bill and the money not received from being under the tax, not to mention having to give up their draft pick to Minny. Thoughts?
It's more money than you think. You have to take Boozers contract, double it (because of the luxury tax) and then figure in lost rebates that tax playing teams don't get. It's A LOT of money. Besides, I'm not sure Boozer really makes them THAT much better. They still will have Millsap and Kirilenko can play the four. I think if they can pick up an asset, they'll do it. They don't want to lose him for nothing this summer.
I think trading Jefferson would be dumb, but I think Granger would be worth it. Is there any chance some form of that deal happens?
You guys have to get over it. I'm not trading Bosh prior to the deadline; and by the way look at my boy Bargo go!
Yes, Bargnani is playing really well. As for Bosh, I think the Raptors will get clarity soon. The plan is to sit down with Bosh and his agent to try to get a good feel. If Bosh is coy, or unable to commit, I think the Raptors have to take that as a message that he is gone and get what they can in return. If he sends a strong signal that he wants to re-sign, then I think the Raptors hold onto him. If I was a betting man, I think Bosh is wearing a different uniform next year.
Any chatter regarding the Suns? Will Amare be shipped out now that the Suns are falling back down to Earth?
Yes. I was skeptical last week when I did my trade story. But since then I've had several signals come out of Phoenix that Amare is available for the right price. I think the Suns are really concerned that he wants to leave for a bigger market. I would've said last week there was a 10 percent chance he gets traded. I'd up it to 40 to 50% now based on what I'm beginning to hear.
Have the knicks offered Wilson Chandler in a package of Jeffries, or are the Knicks trying to keep him?
Knicks are really high on Chandler right now. I don't think they're going to move him. Too many unknowns next summer. If they can't land LeBron, Wade or Bosh ... then why give up young talent?
Any truth to the Ilgauskus for David West trade?
I don't think so. Hornets were desperate to get under the luxury tax threshold. But now that they've made the Armstrong deal they're close. They won't have to give away any more of their talent unless they get something back in return.
Were the tp for cp3 rumors based on something real...?
Just that the Spurs (along with 29 other teams in the NBA) would love to have CP3.
Chad, Is it time for the spurs to pull the plug on Tony Parker or Manu?Do you see them making a move?
I do think Manu could be a valuable trade chip. He's in the last year of his contract and he's beginning to slip. If the Spurs could move him for another young talent, I think it shores up their future. They have to seriously think about it.
Thoughts on the Nets moving Devin Harris, and if so, what will it take to get him?
As I've been writing for the past 2 weeks, he's available. The question is ... for what? The Nets are going to want something serious back in return. One idea I've heard floating around is Caron Butler for Harris.
How can the Knicks be "screwed", if they have tons of cap space for the next 2 years, regardless of if they get Lebron? How are they screwed? The Hornets are screwed, the Raptors are screwed, the Bobcats are screwed..these are teams that have no chance to be better than just good. Explain yourself...
Because cap space is only valuable if you use it correctly. Would you give away Chandler or Gallinari if you knew you could get back LeBron. Of course! But if you think it's unlikely he comes, why give away young building blocks for the right to overpay a free agent who can't turn your franchise around.
Loved you on the sports guys podcast, got to do it again, any moves by the lakers??
I think there is one big move for the Lakers ... Bynum for Bosh. If they don't make that happen then I don't think they make a deal.
What are the chances the Pistons make a serious move, dealing either Hamilton or Prince?
I think the chances that the Pistons move Prince are high. Hamilton is much tougher to trade right now. One interesting note about the Pistons. For years they were a team that largely avoiding any serious injuries. This year all that good karma has gone away. On any given night it seems like at least two key starters have been out with injuries.
How about a little Memphis love Chad? Is Zach Randolph an All Star? Dude has made the Grizz relevant again and he DESTROYED Amare last night.
Probably not in a loaded West ... but he, Rudy Gay, OJ May, Marc Gasol have all been terrific. They're a fun team to watch. I thought the combination of bringing in Randolph and Iverson would destroy the team. AI almost did, but Randolph has been terrific.
Any Pacer rumors out there? Murphy rumors (in particular)? What would they be asking for him? Cap space or something more substantial?
Same two: Murphy and Jeff Foster. I expect that, given the level of interest I'm hearing from other GMs, they'll figure out some way to pry them away from the Pacers. Cap relief, draft picks or young players. Some combination of those three.
Brandon Jennings shot 35% from the field in December and is shooting 32% in January. Is it safe to say that the hype surrounding him may be a little premature...and that perhaps some of the concerns teams had about him on draft night were valid?
Yes. I think he came back down to Earth. But also remember that he doesn't have a lot of talent around him right now. He'll be better when he has better players on the floor with him. He tries to do too much on his own. I also think the hype in November got to his head a little. I think he'll figure it out. But yes, we all jumped on the bandwagon a bit prematurely. 55 point games have that effect on us.
Are the clippers cursed? does John Wall refuse to go to the Clippers if they draft him?
Gotta believe the Clippers are cursed after the Griffin news. Clippers would be Wall's worst nightmare. If I were Wall, I'd be crossing my fingers for the Nets. With the team likely moving to Brooklyn, a new owner willing to spend they could be a hot team down the road. And who knows, the addition of Wall might be the catalyst LeBron needs to bolt Cleveland. Wall and LeBron would be great together.
How excited are you to see Kevin Durant in the playoffs?
Thrilled. Love watching the Thunder and love watching KD do his thing. I try not to play favorites but he's one of my Top 5 players in the league to watch right now.
Where does Kevin Durant rank among the best players in the NBA today? Top 5?
I'd put him in my Top 5
yes Lebron will make his decision off of where an 18 year old rookie will be playing. Because, you know, Lebron doesn't want to win now or anything.
LeBron is 25 years old. He doesn't want to just win this year. He wants to go on a long run and the easiest way to do that is to hook up with another franchise player or two. If he hooks up with Wall, Brook Lopez, etc. they are winning lots of basketball games immediately.
Mr. Ford... Your comment about Wall might be the most ignorant thing I've seen yet about Lebron. When is the last time any major free agent based his decision on a rookie?
You clearly haven't seen John Wall play.
Why haven't the Wizards started to void Arenas' contract? What's the next shoe to drop in this situation Chad?
They're going to wait for the legal process to play out. If Arenas gets significant jail time, I think they'll be able to void his contract. One NBA source told me that the team could just move for a breech of contract (forget the whole morals clause for a second) based on the fact that Arenas will be unable to perform the contract. If he's in prison, he can't play and therefore he's breeched the contract. If he doesn't get jail time, I think it will be very difficult for them to void. No team has successful terminated a contract on the morals clause.
Chad enjoyed the b.s. report last week. You said that you believe that John Wall is better than Deron Williams. Im assuming you meant two years down the road he would be. Will Wall be a factor for a Lebron or any other major free agent considering you could be pairing with a top flight point guard?
Yes, long term. Rarely are rookies better than established All-Stars their first year in the league. But Wall has more upside than Williams and that's why I argued that the Jazz would have to take him if they got the No. 1 pick (via the Knicks).
In your opinion who is the most overated player in your top 20? Thanks
Solomon Alabi of Florida State. Most scouts and GMs rank 7 footers about 10 spots higher than they should be.
Has Greg Monroe's stock fallen too far? His production is up significantly from last year. He may not be a great athlete but skilled big men with an clue how to play the game don't grow on trees. Is this a case of his game being nitpicked or do you think this is where his talent level is?
Probably. He's very talented. But his lack of explosive athleticism combined with a so-so motor are killers. One game he's dominant. The next one he's asleep. Not sure what to make of him. But he's no longer a Top 10 pick. The 20s may be too low though.
Andy Rautins - NBA rotation player?
Normally I'd say no ... but heard a NBA GM last night who recently watched him live say he thought he'd be a second round pick.
Who would you take first if you were a gm, Favors or Ed Davis?
That's the million dollar question Mark. Their first head to head match-up was a wash. Favors was in foul trouble. Davis' point guard couldn't get him the ball. Both guys are great athletes. Both are raw offensively. Favors gets a slight nod because he has a better NBA body.
Has Scottie Reynolds' far more efficient play risen his stock at all?
Yes. Just wrote about him today in my blog. He's not an explosive athlete and is kind of a tweener, but he's having a GREAT season at Villanova and is showing some intangibles that could make him a solid NBA player.
Is Eric Bledsoe a possible first rounder this year?
Yes. Maybe lottery. Just wrote about this too. For the past couple of weeks more and more NBA execs are saying that Bledsoe may be the second best point guard in the draft. He's obviously playing in John Wall's shadow, but he's a very good PG. A few GMs who saw the Florida-Kentucky game were blown away. He's super fast, strong, tough as nails and he can shoot the basketball. With so few great PGs in the draft, he's a major riser on our Big Board right now.
Where do you think Jeremy Lin goes? High second round or late first round?
If NCAA basketball had an MVP award it would have to go to Evan Turner right? Ohio State is such a different team with him in there.
If he keeps this up, I think he'll be the player of the year. Coming back early from a broken back injury and playing like this? Ridiculous. If his back checks out OK in NBA physicals, he's going to be a Top 4 pick in the draft. Love him.
Stanley Robinson of Uconn....Lottery Pick?
Talent of a lottery pick? Yes. But lots of other issues to consider that could drop him into the mid first round.
Manny Harris...any NBA future for him?
Scheyer is getting some, and Singler is dropping because of his poor shooting, but do you think Mason Plumlee is Duke's best NBA prospect?
Yes. Next year he's going to get a lot of buzz. The kid has got some bounce.
Does Trevor Booker sneak into late 1st round? I know he's undersized, but he's dominating the ACC.
Yes. He's the type of undersized power forward who has excelled in the league. I like him.
Second rounder right now. Next year could possibly sneak into the first.
Gotta run everyone. We'll do this again next week. Make sure you check out my latest NBA Draft Stock Watch on our NBA Draft Blog. http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=nba_draft
