Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:55 AM)

MW here reporting for duty. Let's get this rolling.

Justin (Ontario)

Matt, from what you saw of Chris Williams in Chicago, can he be their left tackle for the forseeable future, or does he fit better at right tackle?

Matt Williamson
  (11:56 AM)

I like him better on the left side. More of a finesse guy than a mauler. That makes RT a huge need for me then in Chi-Town. In that climate, they need to have a physical running game-and that line simply does not allow for that right now. I also think that Williams finished the season up pretty strong. Encouraging.

Steven (Salem, OR)

Do you think that the Saints are destined to win the Super Bowl?

Matt Williamson
  (11:57 AM)

I just turned in the write up for the game and picked Indy 30, New Orleans 21....so, no.

Jeffrey (Florida)

What position has the biggest drop offfrom the top rated player to the second? It looks like CB to me.

Matt Williamson
  (11:57 AM)

It sure looks that way to me as well. Haden, then a big gap. But, the CB class does seem pretty deep all in all.

Derek (Michigan)

Buffalo needs a QB. Do you see them taking one early in the draft or waiting a couple rounds. Any rumblings about going after Vick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

I have heard talk of Vick to either Buff or STL. Still, is he a long term answer? Is he even a short term answer? I do concede that he would obviously strengthen an extremely important position that is presently incredibly weak-but I don't see him as a savior. So what does Buff do? Two approaches: Either take Clausen or Bradford and then maybe look to OT in round 2. Or, acquire a guy like Vick (Campbell?) and drat the LT of the future in round one. Campbell would really intrigue me for Buff.

Jeff B. (Tucson, AZ)

Hey Matt, who are the guys that helped improve their stock the most during the East-West Shrine Game week?

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

The OLineman from Indiana, Staffold, really comes to mind.

Brad (STL)

I say the Rams should draft Suh and trade for a QB am i right on that being what they should do

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Very hard to pass on Suh for sure, as he surely looks like the best prospect on the board. I would take Suh at #1. No way would I take one of the QBs there. But, I would certainly listen to trade offers as well, I can live with-but don't love-Ryan and Carriker (health?) at DT if you can get a nice package for that first overall pick. I really think that Det goes DT at

Jake (Nashville)

Was the window for the Chargers began to close somewhat or are the equipped to be a Super Bowl Contender for many seasons to come?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

I think they are equipped going forward, mostly because of their QB. RB is a position that is very easy to find, but they need to do that. It wouldn't surprise me if Merriman was no longer a Charger, but that wouldn't break my heart either and English could be ready for that role. The division SD plays in certainly helps as well. Trust me, I will pick them to win the West next year.

Matt K (Enola, PA)

Matty, So now we start the days of out Favre for months on end, the Vikings need to trade for a starter and forget about him.

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

They can't afford to forget about him. Guys like Favre don't grow in trees and will not be available to Minny. But yes, the drama will start and it will annoy to no end. But a QB in round one might make a lot of sense.

Adam (Gettysburg)

Matt, yesterday John Clayton reported that it would likely take a 2nd round pick to get McNabb out of Philly and that the Vikings were the likely landing spot. If that is true why would a team like the 49ers not get into the action and offer their 2nd rounder for McNabb? Your thoughts

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

For Minny, it does make a ton of sense. Childress is very familiar with McNabb and clearly the Vikes are a contender. I would make that deal if I were Minny and knew for sure that #4 wasn't coming back. But the Niners? I see what you are saying and can't really disagree with it. Could still keep Smith around and they do have an extra first rounder this year. It would make them better and if Warner retires, I would say they then become the best team in the NFC West. Could draft OL with those first rounders and go from there. I am on board.

Tim (Saginaw, MI)

What, no trust in T. Jackson?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

Not so much.

ed (bpt)

what has brett done that the media is so in love with this guy

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

I see why he is such a polarizing figure, but he is a media's guys dream. Great player. Great story.

mark p (marquette, mi)

Matt, who do you see the giants targeting in the 2010 draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Safety is a huge need to me. Earl Thomas would make sense for sure. A difference maker at LB also would be huge. That group-safeties and LBs-need to get better in coverage.

Iggy (Portland)

Hey Matt - So seeing as the Chargers need a RB to solidify their place for the coming years, should they grab one in the 1st (Dwyer, Best), or is this one of those drafts when it's worth waiting until the 2nd or 3rd round because the talent up top is wishy-washy?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

I am wishy washy on those two guys you mentioned. Waiting makes sense. Maybe you make a play for a vet like C Taylor to match with Sproles. I could live with that too.

Tim (Saginaw, MI)

Do you think the Steelers go O-line with their first pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Been really leaning that way of late. CB would be great, but I just don't see that guy for #18. Earl Thomas would also make sense, but today, I could see Iupati being PGH's first rounder. Would have no problem with that.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub after the Jets-Colts game it dawn on me that for all the games Kris Jenkins has missed, they needed him Sunday, not that it would've changed the outcome but he'd be a factor. Thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

He wouldn't have hurt against the Bengals either. The guy is a stud and while they masked his absence well, he really is irreplaceable. But, that should make you even more excited for next year.

jeremy (lake placid, ny)

is T.O , done in this league or will he return to BILLS

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Neither. Buff has to rebuild. Get young. TO makes no sense for them. I could see a team like Balt taking a chance on him though. But remember, a year ago, no one besides Buff wanted this guy and I wouldn't say that he increased his stock at all since then.

D.HARVEY (HOUSTON TX.)

MATT WHY NOT PUT TEBOW AS RB

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

First off, switching positions is not easy. The guy has been a QB since he could crawl and the NFL is a tough place to just pick up a new trade and do it successfully. I bet he gets drafted in the top 2 rounds with all the intentions of him playing QB. If that doesn't work out, we shall see. I keep hearing H Back, but like Pat White a year ago, does anyone have any idea if the guy can catch a football?

Garrett (Wrigleyville)

What are your thoughts on the job Jerry Angelo is doing? I am sickened by this coordinator search...downright embarrassing for the most historic franchise in NFL history.

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

It is pretty poor. I still commend him for the Cutler deal, but all in all, I can't back Angelo for his work of late. Remember though, that coordinator job really isn't all that appealing if the guy you are trying to hire thinks Lovie will be gone after the year.

Ben (Baton Rouge, LA)

T.O. to the Bears? They need him. Plus Lovie and Angelo have nothing to lose.

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

That makes a little bit of sense as well. There are a LOT of teams who need WR help. TO and Cutler together though from a personality standpoint? That might not go well.

matt k (Enola, PA)

Matty, with Jared Odrick, Sean Lee and Navaro Bowman is PSU injecting the most into the Defensive draft this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

That is a pretty solid threesome! I really like Odrick-esp as a 3-4 DE. He goes in round one. The other two won't be first rounders though. Florida has an argument against you. Surely some others do as well. Bama.

Dillon ((Tennessee))

Hey matt! Do you think the Titans will go after any big names in the offseason in free agency?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

It would sort of shock me if they did. Not sure what position they would attack. Somewhere on D I would say. To me, they are pretty set everywhere, but need a youth movement at all three levels on D...which will obviously come through the draft. But, if you can nab a starting CB to pair opposite Finnegan, that would be a nice get. If Bullock leaves, maybe you go with a vet to replace him.

Ryan (San Diego)

What do you think of Blount from Oregon? I like him a lot and think he could help the Chargers a ton next year

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Because of the character risks, you will be getting a better player than his draft position reflects. I do like what I have seen. Big strong RB and I would like to see SD get big and physical as LT's replacement, esp with Sproles in the fold.

Caleb (Los Angeles)

Matt you can't be serious, TO and Cutler together would exciting to watch when they're on the sidelines together. This NEEDS to happen!

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Yup, it would be exciting.

Lance (San Diego)

Personally, I think McNabb is worth more than the 62nd pick in the draft that Clayton is reporting. I can't see the Eagles unloading him for that low of a second round pick. Can you? the Eagles would have to be crazy

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Seems a little light, but how much longer does McNabb plan on playing? If you only get him for say three years, that might be about right. If you are late in the 2nd, maybe you have to sweeten it up with a 4th or 5th rounder. Or make the deal based on how well McNabb does in 2010. What if you get him for 2010, there is a lockout in 2011 and he just hangs it up?

adam stahon (erie,pa - 17)

after this season do you think aaron rodgers is a top 5 qb?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

If I were to rank the QBs right now, I would go: 1. Peyton 2. Brady (still) 3. Brees 4. Big Ben 5. Rivers. After that, I would go Favre and Warner-not sure in what order, although both those guys could hang it up. I think Rodgers is probably next. Maybe Romo.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Should the Redskins trade a 2nd for McNabb? They should use their #1 on a LT.

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

No way in H, E, Double Hockey Sticks does Philly trade McNabb within the division. No way.

Brad (NM)

Do you think Buffalo's making the defensive switch to 3-4?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

I really hope not. I don't hate their D. Would like to see them add a NT type DT to the present group, but their needs on O are just so massive, I don't know how you can rebuild the D as well. Too much to take on.

MJ (Boston)

Matt - who was the best WR of these 3, Vance Johnson, Mark Jackson, or Ricky Natiel? (Three Amigo's)

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Exactly. You must follow my chats. I always mention the Amigos when I claim Elway is the best QB I have ever seen. Those three are just a bunch of guys.

Mike (San Diego)

M-Dub, I value your judgement like no other. I've been a McNabb supporter through it all, and I'm starting to think a trade might do some good...your thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

It could be welcome by all parties at this point. I do like Kolb a lot. But I wouldn't give McNabb away. You could do a LOT worse. Philly is a contender-don't get too crazy at that position if the deal isn't right.

Dan (San Jose)

When will people realize that Michael Vick is not a very good QB? All this speculation about him going to this team or that team makes me chuckle.

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

I am with you. He isn't nearly the playmaker with his feet before he was locked up. He was never a big time passer. Is he an upgrade in STL and BUF? Probably...but I don't know that for sure. He really has shown us very little in Philly.

Hayden (Logan, Ut)

should the niners go for a QB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Only if one just falls in their lap and it is too good to pass up...including a trade.

D.HARVEY (HOUSTON TX.)

WHY DO QB GET ALL THE WOMEN

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

That is how the world works...as it should. I want my QB to be a cool dude who can reel in chicks. Give me Broadway Joe any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

matt k (Enola, PA)

Matty, I think if you put McNasty with the cast Favre had he might get that Superbowl, he has never had the supporting cast, thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

I agree with that. Never had the running threat that Peterson provides, although Westbrook was pretty awesome in his prime. Yup, I am buying that. Although, I really have my doubts if McNabb would have a better season in Minny next year than the one Favre had this past year.

mike (ca)

M-Dub what do the raiders do?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

I hope they play it smart and get a franchise LT like Okung in round one. That OL needs a lot of help. That being said, surely they won't make the smart move.

adam stahon (erie pa)

ur smile is nice, those colors suit you well. what is the steelers chances of wining a SEVENTH superbowl??!

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

You hitting on me Adam? 7 is realistic. They will be a contender. Get A Smith and #43 back on D. Draft higher than usual. Maybe they actually add a respectable free agent. We shall see. Too early to start picking Super Bowl winners for a year from now.

MJ (Boston)

I've never been a Favre fan, but wasn't Sidney Rice labled a bust before this season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Not really. He was injured for the majority of last season. But, he was a 2nd round pick and his immense ability was always very apparent. Rice deserves a ton of credit, but obviously having Favre went a long way as well.

Jeremy (Mishawaka IN)

What do u think is teh most pressing need of the Bears? RT? I think Forte and Cutler are solid but our line play was terrible.

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

That would be #1 for me. A big WR certainly couldn't hurt. Not in the top 2 rounds, but I would like to see a RB to push/backup Forte. They might need more than just one OLineman too. Plus, there are D needs. FS type. Maybe CB. DE now with Adams' untimely death? Remember, Chi also doesn't have a 2nd rounder. Could be another long season.

Tony (Columbus)

MW-If Philly traded Mcnabbwho do you think they will commit to? Would it be Vick or Kolb?

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

Wow, I would sure hope it is Kolb. Not even close in my opinion. In fact, I would still field offers for Vick after dealing McNabb. Go into next season with Kolb and a vet like K Collins. Meanwhile, you just landed a ton of draft picks.

Nes (Oxford, Oh.)

Hey Matt...ESPNDallas is saying to cut Barber...instead what are your thoughts of trading him to Denver for Marshall?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Denver has needs, but I don't think RB is one of them. Trust me, I don't love Moreno, but this staff just used a very high draft pick on him and Buckhalter has been pretty decent as well.

Daniel (NYC)

Any chance the Bills go after Troy Smith or Tyler Thigpen for a late-round pick? Would that be a good move?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Thiggy just got dealt to Miami. Maybe Buff should have jumped on that during the season. I am not ready to write him off. I like Smith too. But, think if you are Baltimore. I am not letting Smith walk for a 4th or 5th rounder.

MJ (Boston)

Are you kidding Nes....Marion and Marshall are not equal value...Marion would be a throw in with a 1st rounder too...Why would denver even want a washed up 27 year old RB...

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Yeah, they are not equal. Barber is a very old 27. But, Marshall also has all those off the field concerns...so his stock might not be quite as high as many perceive.

David C (Raleigh, NC)

Where does Julius Peppers land next year? I know he wants to be a OLB in the 3-4, do you think he would boom or bust in that scheme?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

I think he would boom. He is certainly physically gifted enough to pull it off. I don't think he likes the pounding and this would pull him a little further away from the ball and lessen the punishment on his body. He would certainly be a work in progress concerning coverage though. He really looks like a Patriot to me.

MJ (Boston)

Matt - who would you rather have at WR: Braylon Edwards or Roy Williams?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Braylon by far. Both have their warts, no question about it. But Edwards is way more talented. Way more capable of having #1 WR type days.

matt k (Enola, PA)

Matty, where do you see Butterfinger Braylon ending up next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Not sure how NYJ can let him walk. With that running game and their overall philosophy, they need a threatening WR. Braylon drops a crazy amount of passes, but he can really get deep and coverage schemes must respect him. Plus, you need to keep Sanchez equipped with playmakers. Of course he is ridiculously inconsistent, but his value is still big in his present situation. Opens up room for Cotchery and Keller as well.

Brad (PA)

Are there any options for Dallas to move Roy Williams? With his "number 1" reciever contract......would there be any trade options?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

I can't see anyone wanting him/his contract.

Mark (NC)

Will the Panthers tag and trade Peppers or will they just let him go?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Tagging him is incredibly expensive, but I am not sure how this year is any different than last. I say tag him. If you have to eat that contract another year, you at least have a star DE. Plus, you don't have a first round pick and trading Peppers might be able to get that back. Wow, does Carlina need a WR though. Peppers for Marshall? Even better, Peppers for Boldin? Zona should kill to get Peppers.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub with the Pats having four picks in the first two rounds how dangerous will they be next season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

They have work to do. Also remember, they have the Raiders' first rounder in the next draft too. They have serious fire power. But, here is my Pats' wish list: A WR or two if Welker is really in bad shape. Probably a guard, but this can be found in the mid rounds. A true #1 RB would be great, but I don't see them taking that approach. OLB is a massive need. A thumper ILB to put next to Mayo is required. One more playmaker in the secondary, preferably at CB. They can certainly be back in a hurray. Remember, they won the AFC East going away this year. It wasn't like they were 6-10!!!!

Buffalo Pete (Canada)

Can Tony Pike be a good QB in the NFL?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

He is SO fragile looking. Tall target in the pocket with arms and legs like wet noodles. Hate to say it, but I see him getting broken in half at this level.

Tim (Saginaw, MI)

How good will the Who be at halftime?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Oh, they are going to tear it up. No question about it. Lock it up. Won't Get Fooled Again. Behind Blue Eyes. Anything from Who's Next. Now you are talkin.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Matt: Forgetting the potential need for a QB, what other areas should the Vikings be looking to upgrade for the 2010-11 season? Secondary seems to be a good start.

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

It does. I don't hate either safety, but neither is special either. I would probably go CB ahead of safety. A NT type makes sense as Pat Williams slipped, is very old and also had injury issues. I really don't like the OL, but what do you do about it? I feel like they are married to the OTs, although I am not a fan of either. Hutch is still fine, but not what he once was. C Taylor will prob depart, so a RB in say, round 3 or 4 makes sense too. Got to work on that run game-esp if T-Jax is behind center!

Scott (Buffalo)

Should Buffalo offer Dallas a 2nd rounder for Doug Free?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Dallas would never do that. Flozell might not be long for this league and I think Free is the better player already than Columbo. Dallas needs to get young at OL, not allowing their good young guys to leave.

Dustin (VA)

Should Carolina try to get Mcnabb if Philly lets him go?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

They would be a better team with him. No question in my mind. Remember, they don't have a #1, but to you give up the 2nd rounder for McNabb? I would.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Thanks for reminding me about T-Jax. I was just starting to get over the loss Sunday and now I have THAT to bring me down.

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Ouch. That really does sting I bet.

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Well-you still have Sage Rosenfels! YAY!!!

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Well folks, I am out. This was a blast as always. Take care.
