Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks to our weekly chat! Some housekeeping of course -- big notebook is up, new blog is posted and schedule was freshly updated this morning, so check it all out. I will be appearing tonight on FNF as well from the comfort of my office in Virgiani. We have a good main event tonight with Jessie Brinkley against Curtis Stevens. And there are several other shows this weekend as well with Jorge Arce back in action and the Campillo-Shumenov rematch as well. So let's get to it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

In talking to Richard Schaefer yesterday, he said he said they are putting pen to paper on the contracts. The major points are agreed to, but it ain't done until it's signed. I think we all learned that with Pacquiao-Mayweather. That said, I do believe it will get done because if it doesn't where the heck is either guy to make serious money in the first part of this year? So let them tidy up the details and get it wrapped up. But I think in the next few days we should know for sure.

Brandon (Arlington, VA)

Nothing in this sport is every set in stone, but based on the comments in your notebook, is it safe to assume that we're close to a Mayweather/Mosley announcement?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Yes. Why would he have any points? He didn't earn any and the man he replaced had zero.

Gordon (New York )

D-$$: this angle hasn't been discussed much in the media, but do you think Roger Mayweather's legal issues and possible unavailability played a factor in the Mayweather-Pac promotions? Perhaps Mayweather felt uneasy about not having Roger in his corner in March and was looking for a way to postpone the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Not at all. Floyd has gone to battle without Roger before and on top of that, his trial isn't until June, so it wouldn't be an issue.

Reno (Newark, DE)

Why can't Berto come back to fight Collazo (a New York native) who gave him a good fight in 09?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

They are simply not interested at this point. I think that's a better fight than Malignaggi but what do you want from me?

Hugh (Richmond, Va)

Hello Dan...love reading the chatOne underdicussed point in the Marga-cheato debacle was how easily Mosley won the fight. Do you believe Mosley was just a bad match-up for him; is Margarito overrated when he doesn't cheat; or did Margs know he was busted and just couldn't get his heart into the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I think it's probably a combination of all those things.

Mike (San Antonio)

How much a chance do u give Fast Eddie?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Not much, but I know he'll be in great shape and give himself the best chance to win the fight.

Matt (Austin)

Whats your take on the Marquez-Khan proposed fight? Who has the edge?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

I really like that fight. Marquez has probably forgotten more boxing than Khan has ever known, but Amir is a lot younger and faster and he is also bigger. But Marquez is exceptionally smart and one of the best in the business. He would be by multiples of a thousand the best opponent of Khan's career. If Khan can win, it would go a long, long way to establishing him in the United States, which I think is part of the goal. I like the fight and I think it's a great event as well.

JOSE (MIAMI)

DO YOU KNOW WHO WILL FIGHT GAMBOA IN MARCH 27 IN GERMANY? CHRIS JONH?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

No opponent yet, but defintely not John. That's an expensive fight and if it happens it would likely be back in the US on HBO.

Harry (Tucson, AZ)

Hey Dan, where can I find past notebooks?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Go to my archive. They are all there along with everything else I have written.

Daniel (Hartford, CT)

In your discussions with HBO boxing execs, did you get any sense that they would be interested in putting on a tournament like Showtime?s Super Six?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Not specifically. I think if the right division presented itself and there were a series of bouts to make they would try to do it, but I don't think they are interested in copying Showtime's idea. But HBO does get involved in different weight classes and feature them routinely. I think if you look at 140, it is pretty clear HBO is making a concerted effort there doing fights like Alexander-Urango, getting involved with Khan, doing Malignaggi-Diaz.

Carl (Winston-Salem)

Dan, reading your notebook this week just confirmed what I?ve always believed: Glen Johnson is one of the classiest guys in boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Glen Johnson is one of the most real dudes I have ever met. No BS with the guy. Says what he means and means what he says. When he says he will fight anyone, any time, anywhere, he MEANS it. Boxing would be a much better sport if every fighter was like Glen Johnson. I have watched his career a long time, covered several of his fights and he is just a classy human being.

Kevin (Greensboro)

Major kudos to ESPN for picking up the Johnson-Mack fight next week! It will be great to see the ?Road Warrior? back in action. On behalf of boxing nation, please extend our gratitude to the network brass for stepping up to the plate on this one, and let?s hope this is a prelude of things to come.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

ESPN did come through big time with that fight. Have to give Doug Loughrey, the FNF programmer, the credit for making it happen. I am really happy this fight is on TV next week instead of off TV like it would have been this week had Mosley-Berto taken place.

Kevin (Grand Rapids, MI)

140 looks great right now. Alexander vs Urango. Khan vs Marquez. Ortiz vs Campbell. Judah vs Cayo. And maybe Maidana vs Bradley! Those are all fun matchups!

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Couldn't agree more. Bradley is over on Showtime, so it might prevent some of those matches at the moment.

Eric (Omaha)

Dan - I've always been a fan of Jorge Arce. What do you expect out of the fight tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I'm not too familiar with his opponent but Arce is basically a shot fighter at this point, so every time he fights it's life and death. Guess we'll see. I still can't figure out why he keeps getting title shots he doesn't deserve in the slightest.

Marc (Potter, WI)

On a scale of 1-10, how optimistic are you that Floyd will end up fighting Sugar Shane this year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

8.5

Shane (Selah,WA)

Great undercard on FoxSports tonight. I am excited to see how Lara looks against Brewer. Possibility for an upset?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

It is a good card. No disrespect to Brewer, but I think we're looking at a Lara easy win, a 10-round shutout or darn close.

Sam (Louisville, KY)

Dan, if you could only attend one fight, which would it be: Pac-Cotto in Dallas or Mayweather-Mosley at the MGM Grand?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Fortunately, I don't have to make that decision and will be at both.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, I thought Devon Alexander was on HBO previously. Didn't he fight Demarcus corley on the hbo ppv undercard of jones-trinidad ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

It was on an HBO PPV, but he has never been televised on the network.

Brendan (Philadelphia)

Dan, do you think gamboa might have the fastest hands in the history of boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I'm not sure if you are being serious or goffing but I think he actually might! I have never seen a faster fighter in my life. I thought of the fast guys in the last 25 years or so that I am very familiar with. I thought of guys like Meldrick Taylor, Mayweather, Manny, Whitaker, Roy Jones, Mosley. I think Gamboa's hads are as fast or faster than all of them. His speed is insane.

Ricardo (Bronx, NY)

Hey Dan, Winky Wright needs to read that Glen Johnson story on how to do business simply: Take short money now, win, get bigger money down the road. Unfortunately, it may now be too late for one of boxing's better talents of the last decade.

Isai (Oklahoma City)

Dan, Pacman v Clottey has sold over 20k in one week. Do you think the fight will be able to sell 20k more in order to fill the current available seats?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I think by the fight time there will be a crowd of at least 40,000.

Walter (Albuquerque, NM)

I hope Martinez junks Pavlik and we can finally be done with that joke of a Middleweight Chump.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

They need to finalize the fight first. I don't care who wins, I just want to see it.

Joe (San Diego)

Richard Schaefer saying that "all major deal points have been agreed upon" means nothing when it comes to Mayweather-Mosely. They said that about Mayweather-Pac and obviously there was a major deal point that had not been agreed upon.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Exactly, which is why you don't see me writing a whole story about it.

Paul (NY)

Dan, not that i'd expect you or any other logical human being to be able to explain the actions of the sanctioning bodies, but ive been wondering why in the year plus that mosley won his title why the WBA hasn't ordered him to fight some overrated stiff?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Because he's a "super" champion and the crappy WBA spends its time ordering its "regular" champion to fight overrated stiffs. As a "super" champion, Mosley has 18 months before he has to make a mandatory.

Brian (East Lansing)

Hey Dan, in your opinion do you think Glen Johnson's age has finally caught up to him? Dawson didn't engage with him nearly as much in their 2nd fight, but it seemed as though Johnson's has lost a step.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Johnson probably has lost a step but he's still better than most every other 175 pounder out there.

Joe (Clovis, NM)

What happened to Pavlik/Williams?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Long story. I would suggest a google search with their names and my name and you will find several stories on the depressing topic.

Guano Man (Puerto Rico)

Dan I thought the ponce de leon vs cruz was on the 20th on hbo plus not the 27th like it says on the schedule has trere been any change lately moving the date one week

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

You are right. It is a typo in the sked that will be fixed. Good catch!

Mackey (Oklahoma)

Whats up Dan, do you ever see Valero a major player in the welterwight divison, i honestly feel he will be another pacman just a just more animated

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

No. I barely see him as a serious player at lightweight.

Luis (Los angeles)

Hey Dan Love the chats so much I call in sick every friday to be here.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I hope your boss isn't a Freak.

Koichi (NYC)

I was surprised to read in the Notebook that Billy Lyell is fighting for the title this weekend, I went to the fight vs Duddy at the PruCenter. He wasn't anything spectacular but you never know with boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

He's rated by the IBF and on short notice the promoters had to get somebody to stand on the other side of the ring.

Nuke (La Grange)

We have a DING- A-LING MAN viewing in Maryland tonight!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

No we don't. He's off the card, supposedly with an injury.

Mike (Chicago)

Dan, why do you hate Mayweather so much? You haven't written much about the potential mosley vs. Mayweather fight but yet you've written more about the PAcquiao Vs. Clottey. If Pacquiao and Mosley were negotiating a fight, i'm pretty we would see more articles from you. And you keep doubting the fight because you think Floyd would back out but yet he had a valid reason in the Pacquiao fight especially with today's age of PED use. Sorry but no fighter passes up that payday unless they have something to hide.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah.

Ryan (Michigan)

Stevens or Brinkley tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Stevens by KO.

Joel Julio (Dan's basement)

Hi Dad!

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Start training for the Angulo fight.

Bert (Minneapolis)

JuanMa wants belts in 4 weight classes? Quite a lofty goal. I'm not sure his power will travel w/ him up in weight. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Well he's got two and I don't think a third is out of the question. Beyond that, who knows.

Koichi (NYC)

I wish there'd be a chat where you weren't accused of being a Mayweather hater or a Top Rank lover.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Or a Golden Boy love, a Golden Boy hater, a Top Rank hater, an HBO lover, an HBO hater, a Showtime lover, a Showtime hater, a Pacquiao lover, a Pacquiao hater, an Oscar lover, a Klitschko lover, a BHop hater. You name it. I don't care.

Luis (Philadelphia)

Dan, what's next for Yonnhy Perez? Would love to watch more of his fights.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

He'll defend his title vs. Abner Mares on May 22 under Vazquez-Marquez 4 on Showtime. Great fight.

Chris (PA)

It's unfortunate, but Tim Bradley seems like the odd man out at 140 right now.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

How can you be odd man out when you are the No. 1 guy?

Jake (Alaska)

How is it that the Wlad vs Chambers fight isn't being broadcast in the us?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

At the moment it isn't but as it gets closer I believe the Klitschko people will find something here.

Darren (Dallas,Tx)

Has a site in Dallas been located yet for the Sam Peter fight March 12?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Yes, it will be at the Gaylord Hotel.

Gordon (New York )

Mayweather fans have no perspective, all they want to do is take sides and argue.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Exactly. They also don't read the actual words that are written an understand where the criticism is coming from. Does anybody doubt Floyd's talent? Not at all. But we'd like to see him fight a real welterweight near the top.

Joe (Buffalo)

Mike in Chicago, you are an idiot. The Pac-Clottey fight is finalized, the May-Mos is not. that is why one is written about and the other is not, seems like common sense to me!

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

When Freaks attack!

Mark (Maryland)

Gordon, check the forums lately. Mayweather and Pacquiao fans are equally as annoying right now.

Eric (Omaha)

For any Freaks up late, ESPN Classic is showing the Vazquez-Marquez trilogy tonight at 1 AM EST.

Matt (Columbus, Ohio)

In the notebook you mention Judah as a possible opponent for Maidana, any thoughts on that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Exciting fight if it were to happen.

Idiot (Everywhere)

Dan, why do you hate Floyd? He's the best fighter ever! He's never lost! Unlike Ray Robinson, who lost numerous times!!!!

Eric (Irving, TX)

Look, Dan's not a Floyd hater. And neither are most of the freaks. If he makes the fight with Mosley, we'll stop saying he's been ducking quality welterweights, b/c at that point he'll have actually fought one.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

ONE.

Cory (Arkansas)

So the HBO crew will not being calling the Jones-Hopkins fight? They are only distributing it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Apparently you can read. Congrats. I'm sure your parents must be so proud.

Brock (Illinois)

Koki Kameda

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Little Japanese flyweight titleholder. What about him?

Ross (Indianapolis)

Dan, your blog about the first quarter of the year was depressing. However, today's blog and notebook made it sound like March through June are shaping up nicely for the Freaks. Hopefully that continues all year

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Exactly. HBO may have been a little slow in the first quarter (and not its fault Mosley-Berto was called off), but the second part of the year looks potentially excellent.

Dave (San Jose)

What is going on with Emmanuel Steward? Haven't heard his name for awhile, does he train any top guys anymore (Andy Lee does not count)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

He's training Wlad, who defends his title in less than two months.

Rick (NY)

Ever been to Hall of Fame in Canastota?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Many times. When I used to live in upstate New York, I used to go every year for many years in a row. I would go up on Saturday and blow all my money at the memorabilia show at the high school a block from the HOF. Crazy thing is, since I've been covering boxing full time since 2000, I have not been back because every induction weekend (literally) I have been at a big fight.

David (Cape Canaveral)

Dan, conflicting reports have Solis fighting in Germany on the Gamboa card, and in Key West on ESPN card. Which is it or is it both?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Solis is fighting in March in Key West, Gamboa in Germany. Those are the facts according their promoters. Solis is not fighting in March in Germany and Gamboa is not fighting in March in Key West.

Jay-money (dallas,tx)

dan do u intend to be at the sam peter fight the night before, since you are already going to be in town there for the pac-clotty?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Definitely.

Aaron (Hartford CT)

Andthe new Middleweight Champion of the world... Billy Lyell !! Come on...

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

One can dream can't one? If Lyell wins, he won't even be the top middleweight in Youngstown, Ohio, much less the real champion.

Darryl (Montreal)

Dan, I was wondering what other sports you used to cover and has boxing always been your preference?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I have covered at one time or another just about every sport you can think of -- high school and college of just about every variety, pro baseball, some NFL, auto racing, you name it.

Bryant (Pitt)

What's on tap for bad Chad at the moment?9

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Looks like a June fight with Pascal.

Larry (Orange CT)

What do you think of Erik Morales coming back?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Sad. I was at his last fight against Diaz in Chicago and remember the press conference after where he talked about retiring and how his head hurt from all the punches.

Mackey (Oklahoma)

heard anything about kevin johnson

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

No, and I'm happy about it.

Mark (Norfolk)

Are you saying RECENTLY Floyd is avoiding talent? Because, what, does Judah, De La Hoya and Hatton not count?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

They count but they were not the elite welters. Judah was coming off a loss. Nobody really gave Oscar a shot to win and Mayweather wound up having trouble and Hatton was another fight nobody gave him a real chance in since he was smaller and way slower, and look what happened. I never begrudged Mayweather the Oscar or Hatton fights because of the money involved. However, he handpicked other opponents instead of fighting the best. Sharmba Mitchell, Henry Bruseles, even Judah were jokes at the time.

Gus (AZ)

I'm just shocked Erik Morales isn't fighting Mayweather for his comeback, then when PBF dominates him he can say look I just beat another guy that Pac Man struggled with

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

In fairness to Floyd, you can't blame Floyd for fighting Baldomir. He was the lineal champ at 147 and a full sized welterweight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I never complained about that fight for that very reason. I endorsed it because it was the lineal championship. Never had a problem with that fight, never will.

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

Lot's of fights this weekend. Which are you most interested to see? Lara? FNF main event?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

FNF main could be fun. And even though Arce isn't what he was, he's always fun, so I look forward to those two.

Mark (Maryland)

I agree Judah was coming off of a loss and that makes the fight look worse than it was, but we are forgetting that when that fight was originally made Judah was the champ at 147. It's not Floyds fault Judah lost his tune up, so you can't act like Floyd wasn't trying to fight the supposed top guys.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Once Judah lost, Mayweather needed to find another opponent.

The silent majority (USA)

Dan, I wish there was a way to keep the morons out of the chat. I can only imagine half the crap you see that doesn't get posted!

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Not possible. They outnumber us.

James K. (Texas)

I'm still here.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Thanks for the update.

Nick (Burlington, VT)

You said at the top that the "major points" have been agreed to with the Mayweather-Mosley negotiations. Any idea if blood testing is part of that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Having spoken to both sides, Mosley has agreed to whatever blood testing Mayweather wants. That is not an issue.

Roger (Bristol, TN)

Dan, do you ever check out the European fights live on Saturday afternoons? Usually most of them are broadcast on the internet. I plan on seeing Sylvester fight tomorrow.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Of course.

Jake (Alaska)

I heard the Holyfield fight is off, what happened?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Read the news story on the top of the boxing page in the news headlines.

Tom (NY)

Dan, is it necessary to find a way to whine about PBF-Pac not being made in every article you write now? Seriously, you could be writing about the tragedy in Haiti and how it affected Andre Berto and you'd find some way to mix in a "Mayweather-Mosley is still not the best fight out there"....ENOUGH with the PBF-Pac whining. It is time to MOVE ON.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

I'll move on when I damn well want. As for Berto and Haiti, I have covered that quite a bit as well. The two have nothing to do with each other.

Dennis (Miami, FL )

any word on the fallout from the julio chavez jr steroids issue?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

His case has still not been scheduled for a hearing in Nevada. His camp asked for an extension and received one.

Bucky (Denver)

There is more boxing tonight than my DVR can handle. I think I will watch FNF live as I tape Top Rank on FSN. I will have to catch the Showtime bout on the west coast replay. I don't think I will get my Spanish lesson on Telemundo this week. Great weekend of fights if you ask me. Love seeing the young guys.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Top Rank Live is on Saturday not Friday. Tonight we have ESPN2, the Golden Boy FSN show, ShoBox and Telemundo.

Luis (Los angeles)

Guys I want someone to kick the crap out of: Maliggnaggi, Froch, Mayweather, Abraham, Haye.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Some anger management issues, Luis?

mike ( costa rica)

dan, don king show march 6 i guess the tickets will go on sale march 5??

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Tickets go on sale tomorrow for the Alexander-Urango fight.

Charles (Philly)

Did you LOL when Evander told you that "[t]here are so many places [in the U.S.] that want to have the [Botha] fight"?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

I tried to hide my giggle.

bubba (ottawa il)

Dan, great notebook big guy. I love devon alexander, after the urango fight who would you like to see devon fight? Im i wrong to think this kid could be a pretty big star/draw someday?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

If Devon wins, I'd love to see him with any of the to guys at 140 -- Bradley and Khan in particular.

Eric (Irving, TX)

Speaking of Floyd's fight with Baldomir, isn't Floyd still technically the lineal champ? Retirement aside. Wouldn't Mosley become the lineal champ by beating him if they fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Floyd gave up his claim when he retired.

Joe (Philly)

Don't ever let go of being mad about Pac-Mayweather happen. We need to show the promoters they can't shove these lesser opponents down our throats

Bryant (Pitt)

Dtm we any closer to arreola/adamek?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

How can we be when Adamek still has to fight next week? Nothing is going to happen until after that fight.

Brandon (San Diego)

lol. Quote of the year so far:"I'll move on when I damn well want." -Dan Rafael.

Erik (New York City, Queens)

Dan, What network is covering is the Victor Ortiz bout going to be shown Feb 25th

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Fox Sports Net, which will now televise Fight Night Club card that GB puts on every month.

Stan (New Jersey)

Dan, if Pavlik v Martinez is made and takes place in A.C. that would be awesome. What do you think about fights in Atlantic City and in particular Boardwalk Hall?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

I always enjoy covering fights at Boardwalk Hall. It's a great venue and I like going there because I don't have to fly -- I just drive. I've covered a lot of memorable fights there. Best were probably Gatti-Ward 3 and Cotto-Torres.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

D$$ was it me or did EVERY punch Gamboa threw seemed to hurt Mtagwa last week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

It wasn't you.

David (Winston-Salem)

Dan, any chance Popo or Thunder will make an apperance with you tonight on FNF?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Only if one of them leaps into my lap during our taping. I'll remember to close the door to my office though.

jcs (Winnipeg, Canada)

I was glad to read your comments on Trinidad last week that he has no more fighting ambitions. Maybe he should start counselling other fighters who can't seem to say goodbye?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I think every fighter needs to make that decision on his own. I know it can't be easy.

Mike (Hillsboro, OR)

Dan, next time ESPN wants to upgrade the chat software have them include a moron filter in it.

Joe (Stamford, CT)

Gut feeling, do you think we will see either Lopez or Gamboa in against John sometime this year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I would hope so, especially since Gamboa is technically John's mandatory.

matt (CT)

Any news about Winky?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

He actually was involved promoting a small show in New York City this week.

jcs (Winnipeg, Canada)

Brinkley was saying that he wanted an HBO fight if he wins - Do you think he has that much cache, even if he does win his 9th in a row? I still follow the COntender, Season 1 guys a bit, but when I think of Brinkley, I can't help but remember him getting KO'd by Joey Spina

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

If Brinkley gets an HBO fight I'd be surprised. Let's put it that way.

Raul Jr. (Everett, WA)

FSN stepped it up with its boxing telecast. Mad props.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

HD baby!

Milton (Raleigh, NC)

DTM, loved the columns about Margacheato. Think you were spot on. Supposing he gets his license, is he on a crash course for a Cotto rematch?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

If he's licensed, that would always be a money-making grudge match, so I would think it is possible soemday.

ivan (orlando)

dan im a huge yankee fan but real quick what do you think of the randy winn pickup?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Disgusted. Wanted Damon back in the worst way but the Yankees and Damon handled it about as well as Mayweather and Pacquiao handled their negotiations.

chuzen (st. louis)

since arum name-dropped caballero, is it reasonable to think a showdown with lopez will actually happen?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I think it is possible.

Choco (New Jersey)

If they fight right now - who would you favour between Gamboa and JMM?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I think Gamboa would be too fast for him and cut him up. Very bad style match for Marquez, but since he is not longer at 126 or 130, it ain't happening.

Pancho (Los Mochis)

Is Alan Green starting the tournament with 0 points?

Luis (PR)

Negotiation 101 by Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. With a foreword from Winky Wright. That one would be a bestseller.

Gerry (Ocala, FL)

When will we see the return of Daniel Jacobs?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Don't know for sure but Oscar De La Hoya had mentioned to me in December when I was doing the story on Jacobs as prospect of the year, that GB intended to put him on the Pacquiao-Mayweather card on March 13. That obviously didn't happen. So I think there's a chance Jacobs comes back March 27 on the HBO undercard that might have Katsidis-Guerrero in the main event. That's just a guess.

mike ( costa rica)

dan, this might be a stupid ? but are the boxers allowed to have anything but water in the cornor or can they have things like gatorade?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

In some places Gatorade and sports drinks are allowed. In Nevada, those drinks are now allowed.

bert (freehold)

do you see brandon jacobs having an impact as a promoter. is he handling any boxers now?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Brandon is not promoting. He's managing some guys and he's a fan of the sport. I've had a chance to meet him a few times in the past year or so at fights and he seems to know boxing pretty well. I think he sees this as a career once his football playing days are over.

Mark (Denver)

Any news on Mike Alvarado? He was supposed to fight on Feb. 20 but see from the schedule that Top Rank Live has moved to Mexico for that night. Is he still fighting on Feb. 20 and if so, do you know his opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

No, he has been pushed back to a date TBA.

Coryj (Westerly, RI)

Is there any local or national TV coverage for Manfredo vs Vanda tonight @ Mohegan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

It will be televised regionally on tape delay, probably in about 2-3 weeks like a lot of the TKO cards.

Nick (L.A.)

Don't you think that's the real reason the Gamboa Lopez fight isn't happening just yet. Gamboa looked too good for Lopez at the moment and Arum not letting one of his rising stars get embarrassed?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Not at all. It's about the money and that fight will be a lot, lot bigger a couple of fights from now. Sure there is a risk one might lose, but boxing is a risky business.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

By the way, I mentioned earlier how I thought maybe Danny Jacobs could be on March 27 on the BAD card. But I also think it's possible his first fight of the year could be on the PPV of Jones-Hopkins.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

The idiot brigade never stops coming.

Yorkis (Philly)

Are you disappointed that you won't get to take a trip to lovely Uganda to cover the Holyfield-Botha fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Devastated.

Mark (NYC)

If Juan Manuel Lopez is sponsored by Dodge, shouldn't Gamboa be sponsored by Mack Trucks after he ran over Mtagwa?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

In the immortal words of the legendary Norman Chad: Pay the man, Shirley.

Steven (Linlithgow, Scotland)

Will FNF be shown in 3D when ESPN launches it's 3D channel this summer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

I don't think initially but eventually boxing is on the radar as part of it. How cool will that be?

chris (new brunswick)

better show, Seinfeld or Curb?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Like asking me to pick between my cats.

Michael (Oakland)

Ward v. Green happening at the Oracle?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Probably.

Ed (Portland)

Stevemtz (New Mex) you should invest all your $$ in Mayweather Promotions. They're the best in the business!!!

Banishment (())

I think I'll have a little Mike for lunch

Newt (Jacksonville)

Boxing in 3D would be tremendous. Bob Arum's middle finger would look like he was flipping off all of us, not just you! Wait, he already did that in the last few weeks . . .

Jake (Alaska)

Is Khan ducking Madaina?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Pretty much.

ES (New York)

More out of touch... PBF fans or those still asking about James Kirkland?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Floyd fans, who are rivaled only by the woshipping Pacquiao fans. Both sets of them deserve each other.

Marc (Potter, Wi)

You are extremely well versed on the contemporary boxing scene, way more than I am. I appreciate your knowledge and closeness to the cutting edge of the sport. As far as the broader history of boxing, how well versed are you in boxing history prior to, say, the Ali era? Do you ever watch the old grainy fight clips from those days?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I watch lots of old fights and read about boxing history all the time, in addition to listening to stories from some of the older people in the business.

John Doe (Nowheresville)

Dan, any chance you moving your chats to 5 pm EST so I don't have to sneak onto the internet at work?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Ummmm, no.

Dan (Brooklyn)

There really is something special with Gamboa. He brings that star quality that makes you want to watch every fight he's in. Like an early Tyson or Roy Jones - or Pacman. Very excited to see him in some big fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

He is the most electrifying fighter I have seen in a long, long time. When he fights I CAN'T WAIT to see him step between the ropes. I get really pumped.

Vlad (Romania)

Greetings from Romania!I'm a big fan of ESPN boxing. What do you think are the chances of the winner Brinkley - Stevens to beat our national hero Lucian Bute?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Gotta love the worldwide Freakdom! Bute should have no problem with whichever guy wins the fight. Your hero is safe.

Mike ((Visalia, CA))

DTM, getting tixs for Dirrell-Abraham, will you be making the trek out west?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

No, I plan to be at Alexander-Urango since I have in-studio duties for FNF the night before and the Bristol studio and Mohegan Sun are only about an hour apart.

Michael (Oakland)

Dear John Doe, Part of what makes us freaks is that we do this on someone else's time aka company time aka the man's time...jeesh. Would you ask ESPN to move Friday Night Fights to Thursday afternoon because your lady wants to watch Bravo?

john (tennessee)

Dan, after PBF beats Mosley what excuse will you have for not acknowledging PBF as the greatest boxer in the past 20 years. It not his fault Paq (cheat)is scared to take a drug test.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Do you still live with your mother?

Steve (NYC)

Glen Johnson's statement should be required reading for all fighters. Yoou generate interest by fighting and not sitting on the sidelines.

WBO (Hell)

Jorge Arce has won 1 of his past 3 fights. What more do you want out of a fighter? He obvisouly deserves a title shot

Josh (NYC)

Whats makes Gamboa's 2nd rd. TKO even more impressive is that any other fighter not named Mtagwa would have been knocked out cold six times with those shots he was taking. Every one hit home with purpose.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

You're right and Gamboa was more patient than I have seen him. I think if he had really wanted to just go crazy, he could have gotten Mtagwa out in the first minute of the fight.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Great job pointing out in your blog your dissapointment in HBO's March 6 show having only the Alexander-Urango fight. Seriously, that fight couldn't cost that much cash, what is the reason for no undercard fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Although I wrote I was disappointed with a single fight, the fact is the promoter of the show, Don King, really has nothing else to offer HBO that it is interested in televising. So I don't blame HBO for going with one fight that night. It's a long year and there's no reason to waste money you'll need down the road just to put on a subpar fight. When it comes to November and there's a good fight it wants for an undercard or a show it wants to expand to a tripleheader, maybe the money will be there because it was not wasted in March for a nothing fight.

Michael (Oakland)

This week's chat has led me to the realization that PBFs fans are to Freak Nation what Alabama is to the USA. It takes them just a little longer to get with the program.

Aaron (MI)

Why in the world wouldn't Abraham vs Dirrell be in the Detroit area or at least the mid-west since Dirrell is from Michigan?? Dirrell might as well be fighting in Germany while in California.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Because Dirrell has absolutely zero fan base and because the casino in California is putting up a six-figure site fee.

Mike (NY)

Dan, Glen Johnson is making just 12,000 for his next fight!! I am really shocked it is so low given how accomplished he is. Tough sport.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

It is a tough sport. As Glen's manager said to me the other day when I was interviewing him for the story, he believes about 15 fighters in the sport account for about 95% of the money with everyone else struggling to make that last 5% of the pot.

HBO and Showtime (Counterprogramming Hell)

Hey Dan, could you share your schedule with us again so we can make sure to schedule fights every weekend our competitor is scheduling fights. That's great business, especially in a sport which caters to a small fan base, compared to the other televised sports.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

You know I got a little excited when I wrote my blog the other day. The fact is the networks do what they gotta do for themselves. I think they have shows on the same dates too often, but that's why I have a DVR. The real frustrating part is deciding which card to write about or cover in person.

Marty (Cincy)

If Gayle Van Hoye is one of the Pac-Cotto Judges, someone is winning 119-110

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Let's hope for a knockout from someone if he is.

Louie (Dallas Tx.)

Dan will you be attending the Pac-Clottey fight? Dallas fight freaks have been waiting for a quality fight like this.

WBA (Hell)

If Arce loses this weekend we will have no choice but to name him our Champion "in Regression", which makes him a mandatory for our "Interim Champion".....bids to follow *Cha'Ching*

Eric (Reno. NV)

To follow up on your answer to Aaron's question, I thought boxing was bigger in germany than here? Wouldn't Abraham v. Dirrell command a high six-figure or seven figure fee in germany?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

It would be bigger in Germany but in the Super Six deal it calls for Abraham's second fight to be in America.

JJ (Dallas)

Who are some prospects we should look forward to this year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

In late December, I wrote a comprehensive guide to the top 25 prospects in boxing. I suggest you seek it out in my archive or google it. I had Daniel Jacobs as prospect of the year and 24 other capsules.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Here's the link actually: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=4777491

adam (freakland, canada)

which cuban are you more impressed with ?...Gamboa, Lara or Rigondeaux ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

They are all super talented. Right now, Gamboa is easily the most interesting and exciting. Lara, however, is a supreme talent. As a pro, jury is out on Rigondeaux since he's only had a few fights and looked pretty bad in his last fight against Lante Addy.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

After the Jan 23rd Boxing After Dark card I had to smack some drunk guy up 2 blocks away from Madison Square Garden, do I get an interim belt?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

A galactic interim title in recess.

Greg (GA)

How much would of Glencoffe Johnson made if we would of fought on the Berto-Mosley undercard? More than $12k?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

As I wrote in my story -- same purse.

Aaron (MI)

Will this be Andre Wards last Super Six fight in his hometown of Oakland??

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

What are tonight's lottery numbers?

President Barack Obama (Washington D.C.)

Love the chats Dan, I just wish you would spend more time talking about the Diamond belt holders in the sport, the real superstars of boxing!

Reid (NY)

Ever since Golden Promotions landed on the boxing landscape, do you think they have been good, bad, or neutral for boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Say whatever you want about Golden Boy, good or bad (and there is some of both) but one thig is simply undeniable: It has made some of of the biggest fights in the world in recent times.

Mike (Massapequa)

what do you think of the Cotto vs Foreman fight? Is Cotto's future at Junior Middle weight? Tough to imagine considering the beatings he has taken at Welter Weight

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

I think it's a lot better than Foreman-Santos. I sorta like the fight so some reason.

Rich (Evanston)

How exactly does John Ruiz (8 losses, sleep-inducing style) seem to get one out of every three opportunities to fight for the heavyweight title?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

In the immortal words of Donald Rumsfeld: "Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know."

JB (Toronto)

I know that when you wrote the article about Green replacing Taylor in the Super 6, Bika's reasons for backing out of the qualifying fight with Green were "unspecified". Have they been specified yet? Do you have an inkling as to what happened?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

I've read that Bika supposedly had a visa issue but I am not sure there isn't more to it.

Cristian (Jersey City)

If Roy Jones miraculously beats Bernard Hopkins decisively, what would it mean for both of their legacies?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

That's an interesting question. It obviiously damages BHop's and improves Roy's. I have a hard time seeing Roy winning the fight.

will (aynor, sc)

Do you think James Toney will get another shot at the heavyweight title.

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

It's possible, even if he doesn't deserve it.

Cristian (Jersey City)

Do you thin that Mayweather-Mosely would have an HBO 24/7?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

I would expect there will be one if the fight is made.

Cristian (Jersey City)

Is there any word of the Contender series making a comeback? I enjoyed that show.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

It's dead.

Ryan (Nikchevich)

Will Saul Alvarez be on the undercard of Mayweather vs. Mosley?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Likely if the fight is made. GB just signed him and Oscar said to me that was the plan.

Luis (Los angeles)

By the way thanks Dan for always being right instead of first, I never believe anything until i see on ESNPN.com/boxing

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Good man.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

How come Pac-Clottey won't have a 24/7. They are proven to build the fights.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Not enough time from when the fight was made. I don't blame HBO either. The fight is not worth a 24/7. Instead, HBO is doing a single preview show.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Does GBP need to put a muzzle on Oscar? He seems to be contradicting himself a lot lately.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Lately? Try the last 15 years.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

Did you go to Top Rank's Twee-Up at Stouts Bar in Manhatton last weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

No, I skipped that nonsense.

Andrew (Akron)

Is Marquez beats Khan would that mean he is the first 4-division Mexican champion?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Correct. Marquez (126, 130, 135), Barrera (122, 126, 130), Morales (122, 126, 130) and Chavez (130, 135, 140) all won titles in three divisions.

PeteNice (Fairmount)

Dan, whats the bigger upset. Chambers beating Klitchko or RJJ beating BHOP?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Both are big upsets but I would think the bigger would be Jones beating BHop.

Tommy (Dallas)

Is Vivian Harris still going to fight that undefeated guy?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Yes, Lucas Matthysse. It is rescheduled for Feb. 20 in Mexico on one of GB's HBO Plus cards.

Charlie Henneberry (Philly)

Sounds like you aren't giving Yusaf Mack a shot in hell to win. I think he KO's the old man and puts the legend into retirement!

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Where did I ever say that? Of course he has a chance to win. I simply wrote a story about Glen Johnson but never said anywhere ever that I thought Johnson would win or that Mack would win.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

Since Shane Mosley didn't win a Belt at Jr. Welter (140), would you still give him the same respect of a 4 division champion since he won belts at 135, 147, and 154. I personally think he should drop to 140 for a one time title fight just to legitimize the argument

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Here we go. Winner of the dumbest question of the week. Let's see - he didn't win a title at 140 but we should just give him credit for it anyway? He I didn't get the right lottery numbers today, but I had 5 out of 6. Shouldn't they just give me the grand prize because I was close. Bing, where are you when we need you?

Dan (LA)

Is it true Riddick Bowe is making a comback?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

He's been slurring about it.

Robert the Numbnuts (Greater Philly)

Since Manny Pacquiao didn't win belts at 115 or 118, but did at 112, 122, 126, 130, 135, 140, and 147.......... can we just call him a nine-division champ anyway?

Luis (PR)

"He's been slurring about it" HAHAHAHAHAHA, stop it Dan!!. That's just classic!

Luis (Los angeles)

with roberts dumb argument pacman should be an 8 division champion then, and roy jones a 5 division champion, and bhop a 3 division champion should i go on?

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, You put yourself out there week in and week out offering opinions on fights and other Boxing situations. I was wondering what was the biggest (for you) upset winner that you picked against? And what was the biggest winner that went against what everybody else was going for?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Only one comes to mind -- I picked Rahman to knock out Lewis in their first fight.

Joe (Boston)

Since we got robbed of a great fight this weekend by a horrible tragedy, can we at least have your pick in the Mosely-berto fight that would have happened?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

No.

dave (detroit)

rahman over lewis? really? what did you see in rahman before the fight that made you believe he could pull off the upset?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

He had been in South Africa for three weeks training at elevation and was in awesome shape and ready to go. Meanwhile, I was in Las Vegas two weeks before the fight and Lennox was joking around on the Oceans Eleven set without a care in the world, as was his trainer, Manny Steward. Lennox was not taking the fight seriously and he didn't even get to South Africa until about nine days before the fight. Lennox was unfocused and not in shape.

Jose Sulaiman (Panama)

Robert that's genius! I'll have my people call Mosely's people and inform him of the sanctioning fee owed! The Belt is on the way! Brilliant!

Bing (Philly)

I never won any world titles. Can I be called a 20x division champion?

Bing(roberts long lost brother) (banned)

Mike Tyson should be credited with winning a title in every weight class, lets face it. he won the title at heavyweight, and we know he would have wiped all the lower weight classes out tto. cant we just give him credit for winning a title in all these divisions?

stalker (texas)

are you staying at the gaylord for the pacquiao fight? if so, which floor? also, what day will you be going to southfork? thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

I'm calling the cops.

WBA (Hell)

Shane Mosely is now our 140 Champion "In Retrospect"

Barack Obama (White House)

Even though I am one Senate vote short of getting a health care bill passed, I believe that the American people should give me credit for it anyway.

PJ (Vacaville)

DTM! As a journalist, how do you feel about Oscar using his blog on THE RING website, to further his promotional companies' agenda. In his last blog, he says Manny's punches felt like Shane's when Shane was on the juice? After the fight, he said that the punches didn't bother him, it was Manny's speed that got him? I know GBP owns a piece of THE RING, but as a journalist do you feel he is tarnishing such a good name? Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

I think that Oscar blogging for the Ring hurts the credibility of the publication.

Paul (Austin)

Dan, Rachman over Lewis was nice, but let's not forget Jorge(I think it was him) picking Baldomir over Judah and you chastised him for it,

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Jorge did indeed nail that in a legendary chat pick.

Eric (North Hollywood, CA)

Hey Dan, looking at the schedule and noticed USS Cunningham Vs Godfrey. Any chance that might be picked up by Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

Extremely unlikely.

Nick (L.A.)

Is oscar's blog any different than Arum column in the LV Review Journal which he often expressed his views and promoted upcoming fights?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Yeah, Bob doesn't own the the newspaper (and it was the LV Sun, not the RJ).

jake (florida)

Speaking of Bowe, how would you sum up his career?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Disappointing.

Joe (DC)

Why do you need to make fun of Bowe's early Parkinson's? Do you make fun of Freddie Roach's slurred speech also?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Freddie isn't trying to still fight while Riddick does and is making a fool of himself. And last I checked Bowe was not diagnosed with any disease.

Pete (NYC)

just wanted to say I thought Bob Papa's interview with Cotto on last week's HBO telecast was great. Cotto is a gracious guy and a class act. And Bob P was right, his english has gotten much better. I could almost see him in 5-10 years with more progress being a decent commentator.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

I agree 100 percent.

Jay-money (dallas,tx)

imagine panama lewis training margacheato for his next fight!

Jonathan (Cleveland)

My fiancee just said "you pay more attention to that boxing page than me" referring to my constant checking of ESPN boxing news. Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

No, because that's what you should be doing.

javier (Puerto Rico)

dan there is a good little fight here in PR on the 27th vazquez jr vs sonsona for a vacant belt who do you like in that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

Terrific fight. Toss up. Vazquez a little naturally bigger and at home, but who knows?

Charles (DFW)

I read your piece on the Odlanier Solis fight coming up. Any chance the fight with Kevin Johnson gets revisited? Johnson has a great jab and I'd like to see him in there again, despite what happened with Vitali.

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

Doubtful. What would Solis have to gain from that at this point? Johnson is damaged goods after a non-performance in his biggest moment.

Kevin (Boston)

Would the Katsidis vs Guerrero be for the full title since Marquez doesn't plan on returning to the division?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

It's possible if Marquez vacates.

Aaron (MI)

Whats up with this no HBO replay for the Hopkins vs RJJ fight?? HBO really knows how to stick it to the paying customers...

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

Since you apparently do not understand English, I'll explain it again: HBO is not producing the telecast, therefore it wouldn't something it would air on HBO. It has nothing to do with HBO. They are a distibutor. Your anger is severely (and pathetically) misplaced.

Van (Tulsa)

What happens if a boxer needs to go to the bathroom during a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

These are my readers.

Michael (Toronto)

Has Kevin Johnson even tried to defend his pathetic performance with you or any other reporters?

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Not that I have read. And, frankly, I have not tried to talk to him to get one because I don't care. I saw it and it was enough. Listening to excuses isn't going to change what happened.

ivan (orlando)

im suprised that the bat phone hasent rung today during the chat lol

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

It has, thee times, I just didn't announce it.

Steve (NYC)

Why can't Adamek get on Showtime or HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

He has been on both, just not lately. If he beats Estrada, he'll likely be on HBO in April against Arreola.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, the bathroom question has now thrown my whole train of thought off!! How do you concentrate w/ the other ridiculous stuff you don't even post?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

It ain't easy.

Derrick "Smoke" Gainer (Pensacola)

I thought that Kingpin fought a great fight.

Johnny Deas (Dallas)

What do you say to fans who claim that you are pro-Pacquiauo?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

I don't because you can never win the battle. If they think that, so be it. I don't care.

Kevin (Denver)

Dan, as you started your sports writing career, was it always your goal to do boxing? Or did you just fall into it? How?

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

It was not my goal. It just happened.

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

Johnny Damon was just on the Mike Francesa show. He said that he turned down a 2yr/14mil offer from the Yankees. Is he nuts?

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

In a related story, the Winky Wright School of Boxing Business has just opened a baseball branch.

Cory (Fargo, ND)

If Mayweather beats Mosley convincingly does he supplant Pacquiao as #1 on your p4p list?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Guess that would depend on what happens in Pacquiao-Clottey.

Mark (Maryland)

When you do your stories, for example something coming from Golden Boy Promotions. Do you reach out to Richard or does he reach out to you with the information?

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

It's a two-way street.

Victor (Kansas City, KS)

Did you buy Angulo's story about having the flu against Cintron?

Harold (GA)

How did you get the interview w/ Holyfield? Did he call you or did you work your sources?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

I picked up my phone and called Evander. Pretty simple.

Bert (Minneapolis)

JJ-check out the link. The prospect list is extensive and has a ton of great info.

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Glad you liked it.

Cristian (Jersey City)

"Dan Rafael (2:54 PM)I picked up my phone and called Evander. Pretty simple."Who else do you have in your phone book?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

A lof of people, obviously.

Darian (Chandler AZ)

Is HBO invloved with the Pavlik-Martinez talks? If so how does Lampley decide who to root for, or is his head just going to explode at the opening bell?

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

LOL!

Drew (Va)

Dan, I see Comcast Sportsnet DC doesn't have Shumenov-Campillo on their programming guide for tonight. Tsk, tsk.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Agreed.

jaime (IRVING TX)

why is omar henry not your top prospect of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Why would he be? He is not even close of the deserving it. Maybe this year.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, do you think the people who call you a PBF hater actually read what you write? how annoying!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

No, because I don't think most of those idiots are capable of reading.

Briks (Philly)

Do you think Gamboa and Marquez can rejuvenate the featherweight division the way guys like Morales, Barrera, and Pacquiao did in the mid 2000's?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

That's the hope. And when you add in possible fights with guys like John, Vazquez-Marquez winner, Caballero, Concepcion-Santiago winner you have some really interesting matches.

Flod Maywheteer #1 fan (Grend Repids Mishigan)

We's reed guud! I goes to school to learn moore bedder! Floyd iz numba 1!!!

Victor (Kansas City, KS)

If Freddie Roachs' kid jose Benavidez is such a hot prospect why do you not have him on your list of prospects?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

Maybe because he didnt turn pro until a month after the list came out?

Jeff (LA)

Any news on Zsolt Erdei's move back down to 175?

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

Yeah, he's moving back down to 175.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Dan, I didn't get a chance to say hi at the MSG theater on Saturday but I saw you go into the crowd during an off-tv bout and talk to Paulie Malignaggi (who was talking to everyone). I assume the Berto fight was discussed... what did he have to say?

Dan Rafael

No, Paulie and I did not discuss a Berto fight. We were just saying hello to each other and did not discuss business.

Lou (Detroit)

Dan, I know you are dead set against the fight, but I think if they put Roy Jones-Bernard Hopkins on HBO?s World Championship Boxing instead of PPV, it would generate their biggest boxing ratings of the year.

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

Maybe but they'd have to spend money to buy the fight and they don't want to do that and I can't blame them at all.

mike (costa rica)

DAN,any truth that hbo is going to open the march 6 show with steve forbes vs gavin rees fight??

Dan Rafael

ZERO.

Tom (London)

Hi Dan, I am realy frustrated at the propesed Berto-Malignaggi fight, they both have tons of interesting fights at their own weight divisions, particulary Malignaggi, so why it is being proposed I don't know, what are your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

I agree, and that's what I wrote in my blog today.

chris (oklahoma city, ok)

Dan, it's snowing like crazy here and I almost napped through the chat. I saw the clock and ran to the laptop, to my surprise, you're still at it. Big ups to the king freak

Do you have a favorite press conference moment, like tyson-lewis or trinidad-hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

I don't know if it is a "favorite" but I was there when Tyson and Lewis went at it and it was quite shocking. I was also at a press conference in Washington when Hopkins and Joppy threw down and chairs went flying.

Thanks for the chat Freaks. Hope you enjoyed. And remember to check out the new notebook, blog and updated schedule. I'll also appear tonight on FNF with the latest on Mosley-Mayweather. Talk you next week. Peace.
