Jemele will be here at 2 p.m. ET to take your questions!
Hang on folks. We're working on getting Jemele.
Jemele's in a battle with the NFL's wireless system at the Media Center in Ft. Lauderdale. Hang on another couple of minutes.
OK, people, so sorry that I was delayed. Was having a few technical difficulties. But I'm ready for all your questions. Here at the Super Bowl. Having a great time. Sorry if the weather's cold wherever you are.
Yep, that about summed up South Beach last night
The Under Armor Interview was great....but did any NFL players help him financially or did he do it all himself?
He did it all himself. He tried to get a few NFL guys -- and I think some NBA players as well -- to give him some seed money, but they all said no. Kevin Plank always has been an enterprising guy, so it doesn't surprise me that he was able to make this company work with little to no, outside help.
People who miss their chats need to get lives, or watches, or a day planner, or a personal assistant.
If anyone wants to give to my assistant fund, I'd gladly appreciate it. For some reason, my computer went a little bonkers trying to connect to the NFL's wireless.
Can you give my wife and i some tix for any events down there? I live in Pompano, you can stay here for free in return??
Pompano? C'mon man, you've got to do better than that. That's nowhere close to Super Bowl central. That kind offer, you'd be lucky if I took you to McDonalds.
Good afternoon Jemele, who do you think will have the biggest impact on the Super Bowl excluding Manning, Freeney, Brees and Sharper?
I guess that'd give me no choice but to look at Reggie Bush. Think most people see him as an X-factor. Maybe he can pull off a Desmond Howard.
"Jemele Hill-a. This piece is more broken than Frazier in Manila." I've got to say, Dave Zirin's response to your article was dead-on. I was dumbfounded to see you compare Tebow's "courage" to that of Ali's or Smith's/Carols's. Tebow is appearing on a commercial funded by one of the country's richest and most powerful lobbying benefits. Sure many people are going to rip him, but his personal repercussions cannot begin to be compared to any of the aforementioned legends. He won't be threatened with jail, barred from football, face searing racism, etc. Instead he's been lauded by most of the sports establishment and his gaining a bigger platform to broadcast his views. I normally love your columns as a breath of fresh air in the sports landscape but here you were just wrong.
Glad that you brought this up because I was supposed to be on Dave's radio show today to discuss this, but I was attending Roger Goodell's annual Super Bowl press conference.I know the comparison seemed a little wacky to people, but that's due to the fact that we have the benefit of knowing the outcome of what happened with Ali, Smith and Carlos. I also believe I acknowledged in the column that Tebow would never face the backlash or the consquences that those three did. What I was comparing is their respective stages and the nature of the issue they chose to support.Abortion remains a thorny, explosive issue in this country, same as war and during that time, equality. No matter what side you stand on, you're going to anger a whole lot of people. Tebow, like Ali, Carlos and Smith, did not pick a safe issue. He's also, like those three, taking a stance before an extremely large audience. And, like Ali, at a point his in career where he didn't have to do it, and when he's at the height of his accomplishments. In no way was the comparison meant to disrespect Ali, Smith or Carlos, but I used it so that people could really gain perspective about what it means when you take such public stand on an extremely divisive issue. And yes, I'll also concede that having the conservative Christian right behind him is a lot more comforting than what Ali, Smith or Carlos had.
Thoughts on the new spartan logo?
I saw a story that there wouldn't be a new Spartan logo, right?Whether there is or isn't, I can say in all honesty I never cared one bit about this issue. I care that the football team hasn't gone to Rose Bowl since late 80s. I don't care what they have on their helmet.I will concede this: I still don't know why every new football coach feels compelled to change either the uniform, the logo or Sparty himself. That's strikes me as ridiculous.
Jamele, I love a woman that can hang with the big boys and give them everything they dish out and more! It turns me on! :-) ok ok ok...now back to sports! What do you think of the Pro Bowl being before the Super Bowl and not in Hawaii? Also, if the Super Bowl players decline to attend the media day of the Pro Bowl, how much of a fine would we expect Warden Goddell to start throwing out?
The Pro Bowl, no matter where it's place, is just lame. There's no way around it. People like football because of the collisions, because of the edge the game provides. You take that away and it's basically a glorified 7-on-7 drill. For the players, I'd like to see it in Hawaii. For them, that felt like a legitimate reward. They ought to get something for the dog-and-pony show. And I don't know that declining to do media interviews will accomplish anything.
Jemele,I understand it's important to give attention to certain issues, but do you always have to write about depressing/negative stuff?
I like to do happy stories, really. I thought the Under Armour piece I did was a departure from some of the serious topics I tend to gravitate to.In general, I don't think of how many happy or sad stories I do, I just go for what interests me. I suppose everyone loves tension in a story. I'm no different. But I certainly don't feel like that's the only story I can write. Sometimes, a story may have a sad circumstance, but it's really a story about redemption. Redemption is never depressing.
With the potential loss of two elite QB's (Warner and Favre), it seems that there will be a realignment of how the top five will shake out. Who are your top five QB's in the league if both happen to retire?
Great question. I'd go: 1. Brady 2. Manning 3. Roethlisberger 4. Brees 5. RiversAnd be warned: I'm not going to debate Manning v Brady. Same goes for LeBron v. Kobe.
will Tiger be back for the Masters?
I just can't imagine him missing the Masters, so I'm going to go yes. Sooner or later, he's got to resurface. Don't know why he ever went dark anyway. He's treating his own self like a hostage.
Roo, this is an emoticon free chat. That's 5 yards for illegal chat procedure. Also, keep your creepiness to yourself.
The gun show is back...
Ms. Hill: This year's draft class has a lot of QBs who were great in college. What is your overall opinion about how these players will fare in the NFL? Oddly enough the only one I see with any big time NFL potential is Claussen, which is funny being that ND hasn't produced an NFL-caliber QB since Joe Montana.
Not a big fan of this year's QB class. Like Bradford's numbers, but don't like the fact that he seems fragile to me -- and I'm not just saying that because of the injury. I'm saying that because when I saw him in person, he looked like he needed to gain a few.I'm inclined to agree that Jimmy Clausen has more pro potential than people realize. I think the biggest reason he's doubted is because it's Notre Dame, and Charlie Weis. It reminds me of how Aaron Rodgers was really underrated and overlooked because of Jeff Tedford's track record with quarterbacks. I'm not saying Clausen is going to be Rodgers, but I do think he's paying for the sins of his program and his coach.
The Super Bowl is great, but Rickey is still the greatest of all time.
Kanye West disagrees.
As a fellow Detroiter I really like your work I know you went to State, but where did you for high school? My question is about college basketball do you think Izzo will make another run to Indy this year, after gettin' whopped in Madison?
I went to Mumford High School.I definitely expect the Spartans to be there in Indy, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a grad. Izzo always has had a great sense of the bigger picture, and my guess is he wants to return to Indy because it'll give his team a huge crowd advantage and he'd be returning to the scene of the crime, since MSU won it all there inn 2000.This entire season rides on Kalin Lucas' ankle injury. If he's able to get healthy, I like their chances to get to Indy, even if they take a few lumps.
I have a bet going with my friends. We have a over/under 5 Kim Kardashian cutaways. I took the over. What do you say?
I say you're a smart man. I'm thinking at least 8.
One story I feel isn't being talked about enough is Jim Caldwell winning a Super Bowl his first year ever as an NFL Head Coach. Only two others have done it! Why not much press on it?
Funny you should mention this because my column today is going to be on Caldwell (will post shortly).I think he's overlooked because Peyton Manning is such a large presence. Also, Caldwell's personality. He's not a guy who is going to bring a lot of attention to himself. If he behaved like Rex Ryan, people would think Caldwell was on his way to becoming the next Vince Lombardi.
Jemele I'm happy for ya and Ima let you finish, but I just wanted to say that Skip Bayless had one of the greatest chats of all-time
Where were you when Taylor Swift was singing during the Grammys?
If the Colts lose, will the loss be greater than the time that Zack, Lisa, Screech and Mr. Belding left my school for the one in Bayside, CA?
Worse. People will begin to question Peyton Manning all over again.
Hi Jemele,i was just wondering were you into sports in school if so what sports did you excel in?
I was into sports big time. I was a huge tomboy, so I was always playing football or basketball with the guys. The sport I loved most was baseball, and that was my best sport. Played fast-pitch softball in high school. Still play softball now, in addition to basketball.
Could Aaron Rodgers bump off say, Rivers, in that top five?
He could. I think he's a MVP in the making. He's got a few things to prove, but he's definitely going to be in that top-5 one day.
Going to stay on a few extra minutes because of my tardiness. Keep firing away!
If Favre has in fact finally retired (still hoping he comes back), do the Vikings have enough in place to make it to the Super Bowl next season? Personally I'm not hanging my hat on T-Jack or Sage to be the answer.
Think if J or Sage start, Vikings are back to the pack.
between u and dana in a one on one game in basketball who wins?
That's easy, me. Although, when Dana and I played in Curtis Granderson's celeb hoops game, she did a nice up-and-under move on someone.
Well, that's all I got. Sorry about arriving late. We'll do this again soon!
