Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Greetings folks, from the media center in Fort Lauderdale. Nice to be with you.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

Hope you'll check out my piece about some time in a hyperbaric chamber, a la Dwight Freeney.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/9165/going-hyperbaric-blogger-tests-freeney-method

Eli (Kalika)

Just one question, do you think the colts bring it home even without freeney?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

I think he will play some. Don't know how effectively. No matter how he plays, I do believe they will win.

Roger Daltrey (at the press conference)

I was looking forward to that AFC South guy and his dog. Where's he at?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Perhaps if you run long. I'll join Finley, who reports he's already there.

Finley (The Who press conference)

Where are you? I saved you a seat.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Take good pictures, chief.

Marc (Indy)

How does your body feel after your time in the chamber? Any noticeable difference?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Not really. It made me tired. Not going to feel much of an effect from 25 minutes, just wanted to be in there, see how it felt, etc.

David (Canada)

Is it just me or does it seem like some parts of the media just latched on to the story of Dwight Freeney's ankle as if they were desperate for a story to cover?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

An All-Pro with his status in doubt is going to be a big deal Super Bowl week.

Brett (Atlanta)

Paul, in your double coverage piece with Yasinkas, you several times, in dismissing Brees as a legitimate counterpart to Manning, referred to the fact that Peyton had 4 MVP's and Brees 0. Are you aware that in the last two Sporting News Player of the Year awards, Brees won both handily. I think that's significant, given that the Sporting News award is voted on by NFL players, coaches and executives. No disrespect to the media, but I will value the opinion of guys who play the game for a living, coach the game for a living, and evaluate talent for a living over guys who write about them for a living.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Are you aware that the Sporting News doesn't pick the league's MVP? The media also picks All Pros, and lots of guys make money for being an All Pro. Ever heard of a big bonus tied to a Sporting News award? I haven't either.

logan (TN)

what are the chances of chris johnson leaving tennessee and going somewherelike SD chargers. I know he is unhappy with what he is getting paid. wta do u think??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

He's under contract for three more years. Guys can't just up and leave.

Tom Coughlin (New York City)

Kuharsky if you aren't 5 minutes early to the chat, you're late!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

I checked in early. And there were eight questions.

John McClain (South Beach Tiki Hut)

I hear you have been saying if the salary cap goes away, it won't come back. My sources tell me it will, what gives?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

I have backed off of that. I might have bought some long-running spin there.

Dennis (Denver)

Look, I love Kubiak, since he was a Broncos' coach. But honestly, I wouldn't give him an extension until he makes the playoffs! Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

As long as McNair's willing to swallow some money if things blow up and he needs to make a change, then extend. I don't think if you have a staff in place you have to be signed long term to be effective and if players benefit from contract years, why wouldn't a coach?

Jacob (Indy)

What's the latest on Powers injury? Thoughts on his playing time and effectiveness?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Hearing things aren't good. But can' know for sure.

Alex (The Boro (from work, don't tell my boss!))

Hey PK, hope you're enjoying Miami and all the festivities. I was listening to the new 3 hour lunch today on the zone and they had a guest on discussing the prospect of the upcoming work stoppage in 2011. I forgot who the guest was, be he went to Ball State with or around when Blaine did. He suggests that with Peyton Manning being at the peak of his game and other great QBs like Brees, Brady and ROFLberger being in the spotlight, there is no way the NFL would ever allow a stoppage. I know you think there will be one and I agree with you, but I was interested on what you think about his suggestion.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

It's not a new idea that it would be really dumb, with things going as well as they are for all, to mess with it. Bring the QBs into it just makes it more specific.

Jared (Orlando)

Paul how do you feel about the Colts decision to start Stover over Vinatieri?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

I defer to them on it. I presume Vinatieri's not entirely healthy or wasn't when he needed to be to get a rhythm going.

Colton (Las Vegas)

What do you expect to be the drive time from Ft. Lauderdale to the Stadium in Miami on Sunday?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

I'd leave early.

Colton (Las Vegas)

Who has been lining up at Right DE for the Colts this week in practice? During the season when Freeney was out, Mathis typically stayed on the right side while Brock played on the left, but are they changing that up this week?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Practice is closed. If it was open, where people are lining up is off the record.

Brett (Atlanta)

What an embarrasing response to my question. Obviously, the people within the league felt Brees was the best player the last two years. What exactly does someone's bonus have to do with that. Seriously, you can't have a better response to a legitimate question that that?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

You: He won an award voted on by insiders.Me: He hasn't won the award that's acknowledged by THE LEAGUE, as the one that matters.

Jeff Fisher (radio row)

Paul, I need your assistance. Please text me if you see CJ speaking to any media members and answering questions truthfully!! I need to filter his answers this week.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

If they lost, there is an issue. But they won. And don't you think CJ might have exaggerated a little?

Chief (Nashville)

Shouldn't the guy who "screw to buddies in vegas" have more sympathy for people misspeaking on the radio?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

I misspoke and as a result, when they want to make me look foolish, they replay it. I suffer for it. As the guy I jumped needed to.

Justin (Chicago)

I would love to meet some of the athletes at the Super Bowl, but I would be just as thrilled to meet the Who! Are you a Who fan, and have you met them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

I am a fan, I have not met them, and I could be in a press conference with them right now but I am here with you.

Elliot (Memphis)

Let me see if I have this. An award given by writers is more important and releavnt than an award given bythe people who play and coach the game. Oh, that's right, you're a writer.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

How are you not getting the point here? The NFL lists MVPs, Defensive Players of the Year etc. in its record book. And in the standings for those, it's Manning four MVPs, Brees none. Nevermind what I prefer. How about what the league considers OFFICIAL?

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Draft Question:It seems like making a trade in the NFL would be a cumbersome process as far as paperwork goes. When a trade is made on draft day, how do they get that paperwork processed so quickly? Or is it just more a verbal agreement?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

They have to file some initial paperwork and the league has to say it's a go before it's a go.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Do you see any team willing to give up, what it will take to get LenDale White. As a Titans fan, I'm pulling for someone to love him so we can get a 2nd round pick. Improving our defense through the draft seems a higher priority than a 2nd string RB.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

Probably not.

Chris (Indy)

Everyone on the national networks has talked about the effect another ring would have on the legacy of Peyton Manning. Do you believe 2 rings puts him in the elite category of all time or does he still need a few more?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

I think he's already there. But it would quiet a lot of other people.

Alex (The Boro)

In your time covering CJ do you think he's unhappy? I know he'd like a pay raise and he deserves something, but he doesn't seem unhappy to me

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

If I am upset about my salary, does it mean I can't laugh and smile and have a good time and be happy?

Chad (Las Vegas)

Paul, you know the Manning name carries a TON of weight in the MVP voting. Also look at the past 4 years stats for both. Peyton vs Brees the past 4 years. Manning has less than a 1 pt avg better QB rating, Same amount of TD's. Manning has thrown 5 less INT's, Brees has thrown for 1359 more yards. Pretty darn close stats. Pretty even QB's if you ask me. MVP's or not.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

Ten playoff appearances to how many?

David (Texas)

-Brett (Atlanta) Your probably not going to get a non-defensive answer answer since these sportswriters thiink they actually play a significant role in the sports world. When in reality they do nothing but report in ways to make themselves relevant. If you point out their irrelevance watch out they get a little testy.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

This from David, who loses all credibility because he makes his negative comments about sportswriters IN A SPORTSWRITER's CHAT!!!! Chief, you came here, I didn't drag you.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Why such an ephasis on eliminating celebrations after a team scores? As long as he isn't taunting another player or team and it doesn't delay the game what's the problem?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

The NFL thinks it trickles down and that it's not good for Pee Wee players to be breakdancing after TDs.

Roger Daltrey (at the press conference)

Justin, his dog is here. We're getting along famously, although he did nip at Pete once.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Well, we know Pete probably deserved it and that windmilling is doing to get a reaction from any canine.

jason (atlanta)

if powers is doing bad why does he keep telling people hes doing good and is going to play? also doesnt that make it harder to believe freeney when he says hes doing good?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Players fibbing about injuries is hardly a new development.

bre (tejas)

I know how you feel about the pro bowl. But it really was a big deal for Texans fans. Do you think it gave the team/Schaub some momentum for next season? What are your thoughts on the Texan players' performance.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Seriously? Schaub got momentum for next season from throwing well against a defense that had rushers who stopped so as to not get near him and DBs who didn't feel like running fast?

Colton (Las Vegas)

I've heard some rumors about a rookie salary cap going into place. Any chance of that happening by this April? And if it does happen, do you think teams would be more willing to trade into the top-10 picks ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

No. It will have to be part of a new CBA.

Chad (Las Vegas)

Paul, YES 10 playoff appearances but now you are comaring TEAMS not Individuals. The Colts have had the much better TEAMS. C'mon man we can play this all day long.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Tough but true: Players are judged not only on what they do, but what their teams do.

ALFREDO (ARIZONA)

Hi PAUL,MY QUESTION IS IF PEPPERS LEAVES CAROLINA WHO HAS THE BEST CHANCE TO SIGN HIM?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Everybody seems to think Peppers is a magic solution. The guy is a lot like Finley -- a dog. You can't give him a ton of money with the risk of him shutting it down.

Alex (Cincinnati)

My God Paul, put down the blue and white pom-poms. I think Mannings the best, so do most people, but I have read your stuff and you do seem to belittle Brees tand what he has accomplished to some degree. I don't really understand that.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Like Brees a lot. No intent to belittle. He's not in Mannning's class in my mind, however.

John (Indy)

I think the refs should be allowed to celebrate.....chest bump, breakdance, etc. when their challenged call is confirmed...your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Love it, chief. Love it. But if they are overturned, they should serve time in a penalty box.

Alex (The Boro)

Free Agency question: when a free agent is restricted by their team and another team wants to sign them, who gives up the picks to get that free agent: the team signing the RFA or the NFL? If it's the team who signs the RFA, then where do all these compensatory draft picks come from that teams get?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

If I sign you to an offer sheet as an RFA your original team doesn't match, then it gets the pick from you. Compensatory selections come from the league to help offset the loss of UFAs from the previous year.

Hosie (Nashville)

Hey Paul, Have you hit up any of the parties down in South Beach?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Had a big dinner out with ESPN.com folks last night. Otherwise, it's been work. Friday night should be big.

Michael (Mississippi)

Do you think the officials will be watching hits on Payton closer now that comments have been made about remember me shots.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

No, they are already watching as closely as they can.

Vince Young (via mobile)

If the Pro Bowl defenses stink so bad, then what does it say about me? My stats were still as crappy as ever.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Not good things.

Dave (Ont)

Who follows the game more sportswriters (there job to follow the game) or people who work every Sunday and most likely only see highlights (the players and execs). I dunno seems like the guys getting paid to analyze the game would be better judges than the guys who don'tget to see the top players every week. What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

I think you all know where I fell on this very well reasoned question.

Finley (via mobile)

There's a family down here in Miami who's going to sign me to an offer sheet. Odds that you match?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

One hundred percent. But remember, you were undrafted as a pound puppy, so no draft pick compensation.

Josh (Philly)

I know this is an AFC-South oriented chat, but as an Eagles fan, I'm contractually obligated to ask this question of everyone, including the guy who asks me for spare change outside of the 7-11 - Donovan McNabb: Trade him or keep him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

I'd trade him. Time for a change for everyone.

Matt (IN)

PK, just read the most recent blog. Very interesting. Do you know or did you ask why Freeney would be in the 21% chamber as opposed to the one you were in (aside from being able to use a computer or something)? Just going off what little I know about them, I would've thought they would've been more aggressive or something

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Well he can't have one of these at home. Requires a doctor to be present.

Dallas Clark (Miami)

Who are the saints going to put on me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

All different people and combinations.

Terence (Nashville)

Super Bowl practices are covered by pool reporters. What is the post game like to cover?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

A free for all with all the players in an area filled with podiums. And the locker room may be open.

Larry (Washington, DC)

Will there be a post superbowl chat and/or sporadic off season chats to get us our fill until next August?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

I chat year round. And we will do a Cover it Live chat during the game.

Marvin Harrison (Some Bar in Philly)

If it were up to you (and know it is not), to decide wich 3 recievers should start with the first 3 wr formation on the colts 2010 season opener... who is on the bench? Garcon? Collie? or Gonzo?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Very tough. But I'd kind of carry it over as it finishes this year and say Gonzo starts out fourth.

Kyle Oldham (Springfield, MO)

Paul , Do you think TN is gonna split carries again in 2010 like they did in 2008? Or do you think they ride the hot hand in CJ like they did this past year? I really want to see CJ's legs get a rest this upcoming season , and I think that Ringer can be a special back.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

More CJ than in 2008, less than in 2009. Deeming Ringer as special at this stage is mostly hopeful.

Simon (From Crib)

Dad are you OK? I saw you in some plastic bubble on the AFC South Blog. Finley says you passed out because you did not get to see the WHO in person. Whats the truth?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Mom will set it all straight. All is well. Let's Skype tonight?

WEDO (ARIZONA)

Hey Paul who do you give the edge in the rushing department Colts or Saints?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Saints by a large margin. But Jets by a large margin too and the Colts outran NY.

Colton (Las Vegas)

What would be the contingency plan for the Colts if Gary Brackett leaves in Free Agency? I know Wheeler was an ILB in college, but im not sure he could hold up there in the NFL. I don't actually think they have another true MLB on the roster other than Brackett. I know the Colts are all about next man up at LB, but Brackett hasn't exactly been a typical Colts LB by any means.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

How about Session to the middle and you fill in the outside?

John (Chicago)

I think the Colts win a close one, but I have no idea why the media has made this matchup seem so one-sided. Manning gives the Colts a slight edge at QB, but the NFC was clearly deeper and better at the top and the Saiuts are a significantly better running team than the Colts. Why are people talking like a Saints win would be such an upset. The games a tossup.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

The Saints were 25th in defense. One good game roughing up Favre, who still should have won it, doesn't change that, does it?

Jeff Fisher (radio row)

Hey Chief, I swiped Wycheck's American Express Card on the way out of town. After the chat, grab Hutton and meet me at the beach!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Sweet. I will being Pete, Roger and Finley too.

Alex (Davis, CA)

I don't understand this whole Brees vs. Manning nonsense that's going on. For years, all we Colts fans heard was "Brady is better than Manning because of his rings, who cares about numbers". Now we have to concede that Brees is on the same level as Peyton despite the HUGE disparity in league MVP's and playoff appearances and Drew's --lack of a ring--? I think Saints fans are getting a little ahead of themselves. Brees is a top QB right now, but career-wise, he's nowhere near Peyton.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Alex with the post of the chat so far.

jake (nashville)

Do you know when they do the coin flip to decide draft order for those that are tied?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

At the combine.

Alicia (ARIZONA)

Hey Paul do the Jags draft a q.b in the draft or go with gerrard?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

I think they have to draft.

The CDC (Miami)

We've received reports that you have spent a significant time hanging around a Tim Graham this week. We're going to have to retain you for decontamination

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

And what happens to him?

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Are you going to be at the game? Got good seats?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Of course! A press box seat.

PEYTON MANNING (INDY)

Hey Paul,Had I been on a Hyperbaric Chamber Regiment right out of junior H.S. do you think I would be able to play at the grand olde age of "50"?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

If so, as I reported earlier this week, you could actually catch Elway in sacks!

Brett Favre (Mississippi)

Paul, do you need me to send Bus over to photoraph the shin injury?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

That would be great!

Terence (Nashville)

Any consequences foreseen for the Jag's OL that slammed Tebow's QB prospects via Twitter?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Like pats on the back for his correct assessment?

Jeff (Memphis)

Paul, can I ask a question that you agree with so you can tell me how smart I am.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

I think we might all enjoy that. Sure. If you can.

John (Houston)

What are your thoughts on the Kubiak extension?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Not necessary. It's OK for a guy to coach for his job at the end of a run like this. But so long as McNair is willing to swallow the money due if things blow up and a change needs to be made, OK. If it handcuffs them like it's done with the Jaguars, bad move. But it won't because McNair can handle it.

Reasonable (Miami)

Gotta love this town. Is there a better place to have the Super Bowl (stadium quality not included)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

New Orleans is by far the best host city.

Zeke (Houston)

Big difference between stooping the Jets running game and the Saints. You can focus on the Jets running game because they have Sanchez. The Saints have Brees, even if you don't think he's all that good. Big, big difference. I think you'd see that if you put down those blue and white pom-poms.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

I agree with you there. This is the first time I've ever been called a Colts homer. Really enjoyable.

Dwight Freeney (Nashville)

I told Jim Wyatt that I want Keith Bulluck up in Indy next year. You think I can convince the FO to make it happen? You think Nashville would let him go?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

He's unrestricted. The Colts pretty much don't sign veteran outsiders with resumes as good as Bulluck's. I don't see them starting now, and certainly not because of anything Freeney has to say.

Chad (Las Vegas)

Shoudn't the Super Bowl just pick 4 sites (New Orleans, Miami, Arizona, and either 1 rotating or Dallas) and let the SB's just be played there every year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Why? What's wrong with bids and decisions the way they do it now?

David (ARIZONA)

With Kyle Shanahan leaving Houston do you think the offense will have a dropoff in production?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

I fear there will be an adjustment period, yes.

Brian (Jacksonville, FL)

Was Uche out of line on his Tebow comments? Welcome to the whipping post Timmy.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

If he was asked his opinion and offered it, I'm with him. I'll rarely hit a player for giving an opinion.

Suheal (Tracy, California)

hey Paul, tell me the score for the saints and colts

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

I'll have a prediction with a score in a big file you'll see at ESPN.com later in the week. I think the Colts will win.

Sergio (Cancun)

So next year draft the colts (i believe) need to draft a LT with its first rounder, do you think they go LT? or Safety? or would they be able to retain Bethea?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

They wil go best player available. But tackle is their primary need, I think.

Tim Graham (World of Warcraft)

How bout a game

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Pass.

Terence (Nashville)

Indy in February is what's wrong with awarding bids.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Helped get a great stadium built. Weather for game will be perfect.

Colton (Las Vegas)

If the Colts do draft a LT early next year, and also retain Charlie Johnson, where do you see Johnson's place along the O-line?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Probably as the starter holding down the fort while the kid learns.

Chris (ARIZONA)

what do you think are the odds the Colts-Cowboys play in the superbowl next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Yes, let's predict next year's Super Bowl!

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

Manning sems dopey in real life, is that a bad assumption?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Kind of goofy, and he makes fun of himself for it. But very smart.

Ben (New York, NY)

Are the vendors at hte Super Bowl local employees or the League's Best?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Local.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

He deserves it. He's wonder dog.

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

how much is a beer at the game? 20 bucks?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Probably.

Pat Yasinskas (NFC South)

Dude, you need to work on your jumper

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Is the game still on? I figured since I am revitalized by the hyperbaric chamber I would scare you guys off.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Well folks, time flies. Always enjoy visiting with you, and appreciate the good humor.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Enjoy the game!
