Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by. We'll try to make this hour go down smooth and painless. Lots to get to-questions are pouring in."Hi there. Nice to see you. Bumblebee tuna. Bumblebee tuna."

Harry (Babylon)

David - who out of this year's rookie class do you see improving the most within the next couple of years?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Jrue Holiday. Youngest kid in the NBA and very talented.

Alex (Milwaukee)

With all these rumor that the Lakers want to improve at the PG, why isn't anyone talking about Luke Ridnour to LA?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Fantastic idea.

Richard (Miami, Fl)

David, I've heard that you answer questions that friends send you on Facebook. Is that true, and if so, can we be friends?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Yes it is, as often as I can anyways. I'm at David B. Thorpe on Facebook, and yes, we can be friends.

Tim (Columbia, MO)

Dave, who will win more titles in his career, LeBron or Durant?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Really, that's your question?

Daniel F (New York)

Hey David, Why is Tim Legler so down on the Orlando Magic? All i hear him talk about is Cle and BOS in ECF. Why No love for Orlando who is currently 2nd in the East? Can they win it all this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I can't speak for him, but clearly all is not right in O town. But things can change fast in this league.

MJC (Asheville, NC)

Thorster!!!!Give me some Bobcats love! What are your thoughts on the Wallace/Jackson pairing and how will they do tonight againt Kobe?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

So well coached and those two are nightmares to deal with on both ends.

Joseph (Utah)

Watched any Jazz lately? We plan a bunch of second rounder and undraftees. How do we find all these guys that fit our system so well?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Because the system is so good. I've been saying for years that more teams should emulate what the Jazz do.

matt (vegas)

Evan Turner: Pre-injuries Grant Hill (perennial all-star) or Josh Howard (nice starter on good team)?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

I think he can be better than Josh. Grant, at one point, might have been the NBA's best player. Not sure Evan gets to that point.

Dean Moll (North Royalton, OH)

What are your thoughts on Jawad Williams and JJ Hickson for the Cavs? Good futures?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I've always been a Hickson fan. Williams I'm not sure of yet.

saint walker82 (houston texas)

i am nets fan and i am standing on the edge of the cliff. is there any reason i shouldn't jump? Is this franchise as dead as the dodo?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Lopez should be terrific. Lee started and played well for a Finalist team last year. After that, the jury is out. But still, they know they have 2 guys that they can win with. Better than zero.

Jonathan (Orlando)

There's rumors here in Orlando that JJ Redick is being dealt to Chicago for John Salmons. Any truth to this?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

I have no idea, but I love it. I've always believed JJ could start for a good team.

Tim (Columbia, MO)

David, if you can check my previous posts in your chats you will see I have been putting Durant in the same breath with Kobe and LeBron. Looks like those 3 are in a class of their own, agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Not yet.

JD (San Diego)

Hey Torpedo with all the Ray Allen trade talks going on why don't they ship him to Sacramento for Kevin Martin and Kenny Thomas. Celts get a young scorer and an expiring contract and Sac gets a huge salary dump after the season

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

I think the Kings want more. But they might have to settle.

Tim (Columbia, MO)

Any chance Amare ends up with OKC either via trade or free agency this summer?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

I highly doubt it.

Frank (Yonkers)

Coach Thorpo,Have you worked with many athletes with exercise-induced asthma? I'm a tennis player trying to avoid meds. I'm doing a lot of interval/sprint training on cross trainer and exercise bike (I'm seeing how far I can get without doing running on the ground sprints because my knees tend toward tendonitis). Any suggestions on this or other training that can make the asthma less of a factor? Thanks, coach.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

I have not. Sorry. Do as much research as possible.

Michael (Winter Park)

Hey Dave, huge fan of yours. I was always the last to be picked playing pickup hoops as a kid, which gave me the opportunity to just observe, observe and observe. I feel like I have what it takes to be a big league scout. Any advice?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Volunteer to work in the mail room of a team, and work up from there.

David (Tempe)

What are your thoughts on Robin Lopez?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I try not to think of him. But if I do, I think he's a bit hyper as a player.

Ec (NY)

What's wrong with Jason Thompson??

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Same thing that's wrong with Robin. Too hyper. JT needs to settle down and read/react more.

Woomanchu (Minneapolis)

Could you fix Iguodala's jump shot like you did with Corey Brewer?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Probably, but it takes more than one guy to help. Corey gets work in each day with his coaches in Minny.

Ben (Portland OR)

What do you think the ceiling is on James Harden? His per minute numbers have been pretty good but he hasn't been getting a ton of minutes...

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

I think he can be a borderline all-star. He's an important piece to a contending team.

Venkat (India)

Tyler Hansbrough= Jeff Foster?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

The Pacers wish.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

The Pacers wish.

jake ((Sota))

Call me crazy but why all this LOVE for Kevin Love. Like the way i did that? Lol but anyway to me Jefferson is the guy you build around not love.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

I like Love a bit better actually. AJ is better, of course, but Love has that something special.

Baljit Pahal (Toronto)

Im one of your "friends" on facebook and you have not answered my question i sent about 2 weeks ago...LIAR!!

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Sorry-I'll get to it asap. But maybe not.

Alex (Ottawa)

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls!! CLASSIC!!! but thorpe what i really want to know is if you were to work with my boy Andrea Bargnani for a summer what would have him doing? thanks. LOVE the chats!

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Good call. Love that flick. Need to see a third one. "Ace Ventura as Tarzan". Bargnani just needs to continue to learn how to rebound better, and maybe some other counters to his shooting skills.

Mr. D (We Need A Change)

***Please Respond!!!*** I have a perfect trade and I hope Danny Ainge is reading this. Ray Allen for Andre Iguodala and Jason Kapono. Philly gets the cap relief that they want and Celtics get a great scorer/slasher and a sharp shooter! What do you think?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Philly, like Sacramento, want more than cap relief. I think anyway.

Mark (Toronto)

Is OJ Mayo potentially a PG? He doesn't get a lot of assists but he seems to run the offense and distribute well.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

OJ can be a one if he wants to be. He's an impressive pro who wants to win.

Mark (Toronto)

What do you think of Aaron Brooks? Is he a legit lead guard or would he thrive in a Jason Terry like role?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

I like him better, ultimately, in the Terry role. Same with Flynn in Minny.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

I like him better, ultimately, in the Terry role. Same with Flynn in Minny.

Justin (Minneapolis)

Thorpedo. As a Wolves fan I try to be as realistic as possible so while John Wall is the dream I am wondering what you think the ideal draft is with three picks (lets say 2, 16, 24)Any chance this could happen? Evan Turner, Solomon Alabi, Paul George. Would that be pretty good? Fills a LOT of needs in one draft

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Turner or Alabi would help a great deal. They need another strong wing presence next to Brewer, and Alabi gives them the shot blocker they covet.

Joe (Queens, NY)

Will the Bulls bring Tyrus Thomas back next year? He's been a spark off the bench since returning from energy, but his qualifying offer is a little high for what he offers, no? Or does he stand to get a big deal from someone, maybe from Phoenix as a cheaper version of Amare?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

I'd be surprised to see him back.

John (Santa Barbara, CA)

Do you suppose his recent stellar (limited minutes, coach is questionable) play has made Sam Dalembert attractive to a team that could use an athletic bigman on the defensive end? (Portland, Dallas, Sacramento)

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Yes, I think some teams value him more now than before, which always confuses me.

Eric (Minneapolis)

Everyone keeps talkng about trading Al Jefferson, why? Kevin and Al are getting along fine. They both score and rebound at high rates. Why not give them time to work out the kinks on defense?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

They can play offense together and are a great rebounding tandem, but I have doubts about what they can do on d. Can they win 45 games with them as the frontcourt? Yes. But can they contend for a title? No.

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

Is Mike D'Antoni to blame for the Knicks struggles or is it just the lame duck team he has to work with?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

I think he has done a great job with lots of average players.

Marc (Charlotte)

Why the Hansbrough dig?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

I was praising Foster, one of the leagues best kept rebounding secrets.

Gary (Portland)

Is Kendrick Perkins a strong MIP candidate?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Not that I'm aware of.

David (Fargo, ND)

Bosh to the Lakers, Bynum and Belinelli to the Wolves, Al Jeff and rights to Rubio to the Raptors. Doesn't everyone win?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Interesting.

Trey (Sacramento)

Coach, I know you are tight with Petrie and the boys here. But can you tell me this, how in the hell did he get an extension? We had a brief period of being ok, then went right back down the tubes. Does he have naked pics of the Maloofs? Petrie must go.

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I'm not remotely tight with Petrie. I don't think we have shared 20 words together. They all thought that things had turned around for them, but then the schedule got tough.

Alex (Houston)

What would it take for the Rockets to pry Caron Butler and Haywood from the Wiz? Could Chase Budinger and a draft pick enough?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Probably not.

J.G. (OKC - Daily Thunder)

Thorpe, I'm interested to get your take on Serge Ibaka. His rapid development really surprised most Thunder fans. Who does his game remind you of? Is his ceiling higher than an energy shot-blocker/rebounder off the bench?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

I loved him this summer. My favorite tweet from summer leagues was "Ibaka!!". I think he can be both an energy guy and a nice pick and pop option-his jumper looks to be ok in a year or two.

mo (ottawa)

Do elite players work to improve on their weaknesses or develop their strengths? ie Dwight Howard lack of a jumper + free throws, Dwayne Wade 3pointer

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Every guy does his won thing. But my guess is most of them work on their weaknesses.

Mark (Toronto)

Should the Raptors try to pick up a wing for Calderon? Will anyone stomach his contract?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

He's a hard guy to move.

Rob (Chandler)

I know it's only been 5 games, but have you seen Nic Batum? What do you think?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Impressive.

Sam (Wolvesille)

Thorpe, I'm friendly with some guys who help the TWolves and they say Corey Brewer talks to you a lot. If that is true, THANK YOU. All of us are amazed at his sudden transformation. You have a gift David.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Thanks Sam. Corey is a very, very bright basketball player who is totally committed to winning. Just like he was in college. It's nice to see him playing this way, but as I have suggested over and over again recently, 2 months does not make a season. Or a career. Each day is an opportunity to learn and grow. I like the system Rambis has put in there as well. That is helping Corey a great deal.

Brandon (Williams)

Should the Cavs go after Stoudemire or Jamison?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Jamison would be nice.

Sachikevious (Greece)

If you were a player on the Warriors and could see how Nellie is COMPLETELY mailing in the season, how would you keep yourself motivated?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Players should never look to their coach, or their franchise, to play better. It's a business, so they have to do what is necessary to reap the rewards from good play.

mike (san diego)

thoughts on danny green? seems like a second round steal in his limited PT. upside is maybe a young anthony parker?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

I loved him as a sleeper in June. I think he's a lot more like Artest than Parker-without the mental anguish.

Phil Jackson (Los Angeles, CA)

Thorpe, I am considered the greatest coach ever, but seriously, you could have coached the teams I did and won at least as many if not more championships.

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Without a doubt. No.

Myke (Idaho)

I'm curious to know what would you do with Ronnie Brewer if you had the chance to work with him? He has a shot that seems to work great somedays but somedays it doesn't. How would you help his shooting mechanic with such an unorthodox shot?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

The key to shots like that is to make every other piece of it solid and consistent. Balance, follow through, shot selection-all have a role to play.

Michael (Milwaukee)

Do players decide to come to you on their own or do the teams set that up?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Teams normally want their players in their gym all the time. The agents and players, though, make their own decisions typically, unless the player is just hoping to make the team. Then they are afraid of doing anything but what the teams dictate.

JD (VA)

Prettiest jump shot in the game today?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

JJ in pregame warmups.

Casper (Minneapolis)

Which skill or trait do you think is most undervalued when judging draft prospects? How about overvalued?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Most undervalued? Passing and toughness. Overvalued-vertical jump.

Mark (ATL)

Who is the tougher match up in the playoffs? Raptors or Bulls?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Depends on the opponent, but Id lean to Chicago. Noah and Gibson, Thomas and Miller-not a fun 4some to deal with inside. And Rose is really coming on.

matt (monmouth junction, nj)

how about david lee, douglas, and jeffries to NJ for Harris and Hassell? NJ trims some salary for 2010 free agency, and they cut a ton of long term money. They get an all star caliber pf, a solid bench pf and a PG they can try to develop. NJ re-signs Lee, drafts Wall and can sign a SF via free agency. The knicks get a major upgrade at PG, and they still keep enough cap space to sign one max free agent.NJ: PG Wall SG Lee SF Free Agent PF Lee C LopezNY: PG Harris SG Chandler SF LeBron? PF Gallinari C Hill

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Don't think the Knicks will add any money to the bottom line until summer.

Andrew (Columbus, OH)

Thorpe, love your chats. Who is the best PG in the game? Paul, Nash or LeBron?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Paul.

Dejan (Slovenia)

How about recent play of Dragic? Nothing to sneeze at right.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

He has some impressive moments this summer that caught my eye. Much better athlete than people realize.

David Thorpe (Somewhere)

Why do I answer 95% of questions with a one or two sentence response? Am I lazy?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

No, just not very smart.

Alex (Cleveland)

"The Human Torch Was Denied a Bank Loan" ... why is Andy Varejao being denied any love for 6th man of the year or defensive player of the year? The dude shut down Zach last night, and he just brings so much to the table.

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

I'm not sure I get your quote, but you are right on with the question. He is deserving of both.

Jordan (Houston)

Ok Brooks from the rockets is scoring more because he is being asked to. Is he a good enough to lead a team to the finals? why? why not?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

It depends on who else they have, of course. He's dynamite in a small package.

Sachikevious (Greece)

Tony Kornheiser says no matter what Kobe does he will NEVER surpass Magic as the greatest Laker ever, agree or disagree?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Hard to make assumptions about the future when Kobe is still playing. But in my mind, it's Magic forever. Anyone over 35 probably feels the same way.

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Hard to make assumptions about the future when Kobe is still playing. But in my mind, it's Magic forever. Anyone over 35 probably feels the same way.

Steve (Chicago)

Which college players are you looking at next for NBA draft blog? Any one college player you've seen so far stand out to that may be under the radar a little?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I'm doing 3 bigs this week. I have always liked Matt Bouldin. Best passer in this draft and should be a good shooter/defender.

Mike (STL)

Hey Coach, what's your favorite NBA city/stadium to visit?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

I really liked the Bucks game I went to last year. Chicago is great. Boston of course. But when Miami was rolling, it was the place to be.

joel (Ft Collins, Co)

hey coach, surprised with the better the expected shooting abilities of Ty Lawson? Also...between he and Johnny Flynn....who has the greater upside?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I guess a little. I'd go with Lawson. Flynn too one dimensional for me. It's a good dimension, don't get me wrong, but I think Lawson delivers more off the bench.

kieth (John Wall Ville)

Will the Brooklyn Nets be a title contender in the future? How will their bottomless pocket help them?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

it would not surprise me at all.

Pedro (LA)

Coach, I play hoops in a weekly game and am an okay slasher and finisher around the hoop. But I absolutely cannot shoot to save my life. Never could. What's the easiest way to get better?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Lots of one hand shooting within 8 feet of the rim. If you can make those but miss when u go with two hands, then your guide hand is too involved with the shot.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Lots of one hand shooting within 8 feet of the rim. If you can make those but miss when u go with two hands, then your guide hand is too involved with the shot.

Zach (Oregon)

Where do you see Bouldin getting picked? Late first?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Could be late first, all the way to late second. It's a slippery slope after the top 25 or so.

Brandon (Williams)

Should the Knicks trade David Lee for an expiring deal and a draft pick since they most likely can't keep him?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Why can't they sign him?

mark (earltown PA)

Corey Brewer's January shooting - Can you visually see the difference in his shot - or is it simply more confidence? Will his shooting % from january hold up?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Both, and I don't know. I hope so. Needs to continue to be disciplined about when to shoot 3's, and stay balanced with a strong follow through. Also, needs to stay bent knee'd (not with a bent back) and keep his head above his shoulders.

Nate (Portland, OR)

I play in a 30+ rec league, and our team has players of varying skill levels. We always get really stagnant when faced with a man-to-man defense--any suggestions on a simple offense we could pick up?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Depends on your personnel. But I'd say any ballscreen action should help a great deal. If you have someone that can make the shot when the defenders go under the screen.

Sleepy John Estes (Memphis, TN)

The Grizz starters are excellent, but watching their bench gives me the blues! Out of Hudson (career-high against the Lakers the other night), Carroll, Young, and Thabeet, which of the Grizz rookies do you think is most likely to emerge as a competent reserve over the second half of the season?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Thabeet and Young, though I like the other two as well. Hudson always intrigued me when I had him my gym two summer ago.

Frank (Cincy)

"How Now Brown Cow.... The Arsonist had oddly shaped feet"... All great lines from that opening scene in Anchorman when Ron Burgundy is warming up for the cameras.

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

One of my favorite "hated in the cinema but love now" movies.

Eden (Toronto)

Coach,...last chat you said you figure Lebron to be Top 2 all time...that's a pretty unbelievable statement seeing the guy has virtually no post game, his man to man defense is over rated (including by you) and hasn't won anything yet.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Eden, get your facts straight. His man to man d is not top shelf. He has years to learn a post game. And in case you have not noticed, he still scores at will without one.

Ridders (Sydney)

Is there any hope for Jennings shooting woes? Do you think the all-star break could do him any good?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Yes, but he's not getting a break.

Harry (Babylon)

Where does Wilson Chandler now rank among the class of 2007 - top 5?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Not sure yet, but he's certainly earning value in the league now.

Jim (Akron)

Lebron is seriously doing a Magic impression now. Double digit assists in each game save one Mo Williams has been out. Guy is just flat out ridiculous.

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

If only he had a post game.

jeff (jax)

Why do people feel Howard needs a jump shot? Since when do we need a 7ft player with a jumper. It would be a bonus but not necessary. His offense is far better than peoplw give him credt. He has the best off hand hook in the game amongst bigs.

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Agreed.

DNP (Coach's Decision)

Which is the easier to improve, skill or athleticism?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Skills for most people.

Tyson (Iowa City)

For students of the game who would love to watch the "oldies" (such as McHale's post moves, Rodman's defense, etc.) where can we find DVDs of such stuff? Any idea?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Ask Bill Simmons. He seems to watch more of that than anyone.

Tommy (Houston, TX)

What's up with the complete lack of any analysis on Chase Budinger since Dec. 16? It kind of stands out. Just not watching him?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

He's not ever factored in to the themes we've been doing. I'll be doing a catch up segment after the all-star break.

Max (Ann Arbor)

Thorpe (IMPORTANT QUESTION), I'm sitting in the library and there is this sexy girl studying next of me. how should I start up a convo?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Ask her if she's aware that I'm chatting right now and I just posted your question. She is now an espn star!!

Raj (Monroe, NY)

Who would you say is the better rookie? Tyreke Evans or Stephen Curry? Why?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Evans has been better from day one for a ton of reasons, but Curry has been better lately.

robert (toronto)

Do u think bosh will leave now since toronto is playing this way? And who do you see in the raptors future (from a trade).

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

It's getting tougher to leave now, to be sure. I don't think they will trade anyone of importance.

Felix (Riga, Latvia)

Since we are talking shots here - is Andris Biedrins free throw beyond repair or could you do something with it? I heard he practises with A.Morrow, but.......

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

It could easily get much much better. Maybe not to 70% for a year or two, but I feel badly for him for how bad it is now.

Ron Burgundy (A Whale's...)

Should the Knicks still regret passing on Brandon Jennings?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Probably.

Rick (Chicago)

What's wrong with Noah's spinning "shot", if anything?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

His left hand moves into the shot.

Mike (Irvine, CA)

Max in Ann Arbor, tell her "you may not know it to look at me but I can run really fast" --it worked for Jerry

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Nice call. Or maybe just say hello and ask her her name.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Nice call. Or maybe just say hello and ask her her name.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

1pm-time to run. Thanks everyone. Have a great rest of the week and be safe.
