Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks to our weekly session. We're still hammered with snow in these here parts worse than ever. So let's talk boxing and get my mind off it. Notebook should be posted soon, there was a new blog yesterday and plenty of news stories this week, so we have plenty to discuss. Let's get to it.

Martin Rodriguez (NYC)

Notebook today?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Yes!

Danny (Orlando, FL)

It's good to hear from a boxer, especially if he's doing good in life. Buster was an inspiration to all.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

I checked on his chat and it was good to hear from him. Buster will be in studio tonight on Friday Night Fights, so that should good to watch. I rewatched the Tyson fight this week and it still amazes me to this day.

Horn (Vegas)

By this being 20th annivarsary of Douglas' knock out of Tyson, this is the first time I am feeling old considering I clearly remember where I was when I heard.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Same here. I was in college. I missed the fight because I was really sick. I found out the next morning when my roommate told me. I didn't believe him. We had no cable in the dorm rooms, the Internet didn't exist. I made him go out and get a newspaper to prove it to me. He did. I was shocked.

Horn (Vegas)

Buster Douglas over Tyson=Top 5 upset of all time in all sports.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

It's No. 1.

Bobby (Louisville, Ky)

Do you think Buster Douglas is a Hall of famer, based on the one huge and historic win? I personally think his complete resume falls very short

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Buster did something none of us will forget but he is not a Hall of Famer, not even close.

Brandon (Delaware)

Why did Callbero get stripped when he couldnt get a fight and now whats next for Callbero

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

He got stripped because the IBF has a terrible rule that says if nobody bids on a mandatory fight twice (which is what happened) the titleholder is stripped. It's a pathetic rule because the mandatory was worthless and the mandatory, in this case, Takalani Ndlovu, gets to keep his position and fight the vacant title even when his own people didn't bid the fight either. So Caballero is going up to 126 and may get a fight in the late spring/summer with Gamboa.

Kris (Bethpage)

Dan, i was just curious, when someone like buster douglas or say pacman and floyd do a chat on espn, are they doing it from their home or at bristol or somewhere else? they arent actually typing either right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

It all depends, but in this case, Buster is in Bristol for the day because he is doing FNF tonight.

John (San Fran)

You'd think Bob would understand that Pac-Clottey isn't the biggest fight out there and would beef up the undercard accordingly. Have you talked to him about it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Yes, he thinks it's a great undercard. I think it stinks.

Ricardo (Bronx, NY)

Hey Dan, I know it was a different chat but someone had the gaul to ask Douglas if he would make a comeback...can he be banned from here?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

LOL. I don't think I can banish people from somebody else's chat. I'll have to check the banishments handbook.

Greg (NJ)

Snowzilla, have you been huddling around the batphone to keep you warm?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

No, the heat works just fine.

Nick (Rochester, NY)

Any idea what the scorecards were at the time of the KO? Buster looked to be ahead, but you never know

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

That is the crazy part -- Douglas was up big on one card, 88-82. One card had Tyson ahead 87-86, which is a sick joke and the third card had it 86-86. Good thing Douglas knocked him out or we headed to a massive controversy.

Dan (Brooklyn)

Top Rank has enormous depth, with good, exciting fighters who need exposure. What is their excuse for continuously putting together putrid undercards? It's really getting to be a joke at this point.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I wish I knew.

Charles (DFW)

I like how Buster referred to Mayweather's fight with Mosley as a "tuneup". Lot of people get knocked out in their "tuneup fights." (Roy Jones?)

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

How about Tyson? Buster was supposed to be an easy tune-up for the Holyfield fight.

Bert (Minnebird)

Only Bob Arum thinks Alfonso Gomez vs. an old Castillo is worthy of being televised for $55.

Brandon (Delaware)

If you were in charge of the Pac-Clottey undercard who would you want to put on it to tke it over the hump

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I'd put on some more even fights. Instead of Soto vs. a dead man, I'd maybe do Soto vs. Anthony Peterson, where the outcome is in doubt and it actually means something.

Don (Buffalo)

Whats next for Tim Bradley? Valero? Paulie?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

A giant TBA.

Joe (PA)

Why does ESPN Classic run the Tyson-Douglas version with Bob Sheridan instead of the HBO Commentators?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Because they dont have the rights to the HBO version. When I watched the fight this week, I watched the original HBO telecast, which I had not seen in ages. They did a great job on it.

Horn (Vegas)

How on Earth does Tyson NOT get an immediate rematch with Douglas?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Because Douglas got $25 million for the mandatory against Holyfield.

Ricardo (Bronx, NY)

Its a shame, because Arum's Latin Fury cards of late have had better fights on paper than his undercards...

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

You're right.

Bob Arum (Top Rank HQ)

You'll see me and my middle finger on March 13!

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Dan you took some heat on a message board this week for saying it was about time that Mayweather fought a top WW. Why do people get so mad about when you speak the truth? Will you please tell everyone that if Money May beats Shane and Pacman that you will give him all the credit in the world. Just like the rest of us realists

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I have no idea and I don't care. Let them go on and on making excuses for Mayweather. By fighting Mosley, he is doing what he should have been doing all along. And if Mayweather wins, he'll get all the credit for it.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Why is our boy Yuriorkis fighting in Germany and not in the states?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

He is staying active. There is no US TV date for him until the summer. His co-promoter is based in Germany, so they're doing a fight there in March and then he will be back in the US a few months later.

jonathan (los angeles)

why would they pay buster douglas $24 mill to fight holyfield?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Steve Wynn wanted the fight and he overpaid for it.

Kevin (Grand Rapids, MI)

I'm excited to see Provodnikov fight again. That dude throws vicious body shots!

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Agreed. I look forward to seeing too. He's on the FNF undercard tonight and is a good prospect.

Mike (Gilbert, Az)

Dan, with he signing of Soto, Diaz, does that mean Carson Jones is completely wiped clean from Pac-Clottey undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Yes.

Martin Rodriguez (NYC)

who do you like tomorrow between Concepcion-Santiago and Moral-Penalosa?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Concepcion-Santiago to me is the best fight on the Top Rank PPV. I sorta lean to Santiago, but who knows. I think it should be a solid fight. I think Morel probably has enough left to outpoint Gerry.

Zach (MPLS)

Dan, do you think Bob Arum is serious about putting Valero in with Bradley in his debut at 140 and in Mexico of all places. I'd love to see this fight in the spring but simply have no faith that it will actually come off.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

No, I don't think he's serious at all.

Rob (Houston)

Any word on when mayweather-mosley tickets go on sale?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

No date set.

giuseppe (bucks)

please dan please, is there a weight penalty for floyd against shane? I can't excited about this fight if floyd is going to pull his jmm nonsense and get an unfair advantage by not making weight. thanks

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I am not sure if there is language regarding the weight or not.

Monroe (Houston)

Why is Lou DiBella saying that his team had to bite the bullet on the weight for the Pavlik fight? What else would they fight at besides 160 for the middleweight championship?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

It wasn't on that specific fight. It was that they would have preferred a big fight at 154, but there wasn't one. So they "bit the bullet" and will fight Pavlik at 160. After the Williams fight, Sergio wanted to go back to 154 and defend his title.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Any idea when Agbeko could be back in the ring?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

He will be in South Africa against Vusi Malinga on April 16 in a title eliminator. It's on the ESPN.com fight schedule.

Christopher (Linz, Austria)

I have recently read in an interview that Glen Johnson is considering a fight with Tavoris Cloud in March, how realistic is this due to the fact that Glen fought a week ago?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Very realistic, although it could wind up in mid-April on the Berto HBO undercard.

Anthony (Des Moines, IA)

What is Ali Funeka doing these days? Any chance of Ali Funeka vs. Valero?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

It looks like a possible Funeka-Guzman rematch on March 27 on the HBO undercard of Maidana-Cayo.

chris (oklahoma city, ok)

Dan, in spirit of the Douglas/Tyson fight, what is your favorite upset in boxing of all time?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Ummm, Douglas-Tyson?

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Dan, a couple weeks ago someone asked you if Jermain Taylor is a HOFer, and you said no. In the past you have said Trinidad is a HOFer. They have similar resumes with the exception of the fact that Taylor beat Hopkins while Felix lost badly to the Executioner.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Trinidad beat many more significant opponents and defended his title many more times and unified titles in multiple divisions. There resumes are not close.

Bob (PA)

Any word on the undercard for may/mosley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Danny Jacobs is likely. Saul Alvarez will be on according to Golden Boy and could possible face Matthew Hatton.

Dan (Brooklyn)

Arum could have kept Gamboa busy on the Pac/Clottey undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Why would he when his minumums are rather large and he can instead headline overseas and not cost Bob a dime?

Shawn Michaels (San Antonio)

I'm loosing it man! I'm loosing it! Will I get my rematch and do you think I'll win?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Settle down Sexy Boy.

Juan (Los Angeles)

A big thank you and good luck to Rich Marotta- being in LA and hearing his show regularly was a gift to all boxing fans- a guy who called it like he saw and was beloved by all- very rare now a days- Good luck in his Top Rank venture- he will be missed

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Agreed, as I wrote in my blog yesterday.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan do you think that Judah is serious about moving to Jr. Welter or just didnt want to fight Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I think he wants to move to 140 for a big fight.

ryan (philly)

dan,ive seen two diff reports on pavlik-martinez is it may 8th or april 18th?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

April 17.

Johann, NYC (nyc)

i have clottey upsetting everyone with a 10th round knockout

Ron (Bethel, Ct)

Dan I was curious if you knew whats going on with Cristian Mijares. You have him on your schedule for the feb 27 ppv card but I read that he is suppossed to be fighting March 27th. that is a quick turn around if he plans on fighting twice

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

He's supposed to fight on both shows.

Ron (Bethel, Ct)

Dan the man, I was curious on your opinion of this saturday's top rank ppv card. I'm on the fence with shelling out $40 considering all of the ppv's scheduled in the next few months? Is it true Donnaire's new opponents last fight was at 105???

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

If you like the smaller weights, it's a nice card. I think Santiago-Concepcion and Morel-Penalosa are solidly competitive matches. Montiel-Morales I am not sure, but considering horrible Montiel has looked recently an upset would not shock me. And Donaire-Vargas I think is actually a slight upgrade from Guerrero. Vargas' last fight was a competitive split decision loss to Nietes for a strawweight title, but Vargas has fought at heavier weights.

komandante (Australia)

do you think the Nevada Commission will bend its rule about Floy'd demand of blood testing, your toughts please.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

The commission isn't going to bend any rules. The blood testing in Mosley-Mayweather will be conducted as per terms of their contract, not by Nevada rules.

Gerard (Winston-Salem, NC)

Dan, kudos to Pavlik for facing Martinez. It should be a great fight and I actually believe that Martinez may be Pavlik?s toughest test yet, even over Taylor and Hopkins.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

It's a terrific fight and both sides get credit for their willingness to face each other.

Robert (El Cajon CA)

DTM we need your expertise. We have been having a debate here at work and are trying to figure out why fighters come into the ring with so many belts? For instance the last Pac-Man fight against Cotto, he came in to the ring with like 10 different belts? If I'm not mistaken, he only held one alphabet title and a ring linear chamoinship belt at 140? Why all the other belts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

He's had various regional belts, like the WBC international and such. That's why.

paul (austin,texas)

yo dan is cotto-foreman gonna be a hbo ppv fight or a world championshipboxing

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Very likely ppv.

Mike (Gilbert, Az)

Dan, Any truth to Paul Williams coming down to 147 in May?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

That is something he is considering. The only problem is there are legit opponents for him to fight there at this moment.

Shower Door (Las Vegas)

Judah's moving to Jr. Welter because he heard I was moving up to 147. He's not ducking Berto, he just wants no part of me again.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, what's worse: the snow situation you're enduring or a forced veiwing of John Ruiz fights?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Ruiz fights.

Greenberg (NYC)

Dan who were the HBO commentators for Douglas-Tyson?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Lampley, Merchant and Sugar Ray Leonard.

nick (ny)

any word on the undercard for pavlik-martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

On TV it will be Bute-Miranda from Montreal. HBO will do one fight from each city.

Justin (Springfield, NJ)

Dan: Any word on whether Katsidis will remain on the March 27th BAD card? If not, what are some of the alternatives being discussed?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Katisidis is off the show at this point. Golden Boy told me they offered him Funeka and Katsidis camp turned it down.

john (los angeles)

who do you got on a maidana vs valero fight if it ever were to happen? who do you think is stronger?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

OMG that is a sick fight.

Bart (Lincoln, NE)

Dan, have they come up with a site yet for Klitschko-Chambers?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Duesseldorf, Germany. You really need to bookmark the fight schedule on ESPN.com/boxing.

paul (austin,texas)

what date is the super six double header moving to

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Not definite that it is moving but it probably is I am told. Not sure of the new date.

Marc (Claremont)

What is keeping a Darchinyian/Donaire rematch from happening?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Nothing as long as they win their scheduled bouts.

Guano man (Puerto Rico)

dan you mention berto fighting mid april if t going to bcarlos quintana the favorite to land that fight in florida.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Yes, there are details in today's notebook.

Froch's Girlfriend (Silk Sheets)

I'm still hot.

Alex (Florida)

Will there be a televised co-feature to Urango-Alexander?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

No. HBO has one fight that night, but will also have the preview show for Pacquiao-Clottey as well as its new documentary on the Magic-Bird rivalry, which I am really looking forward to seeing.

Yorkis (Philly)

Why do we have to watch Funeka-Guzman again? I think we got the picture the first time (even if the judges didn't)

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Exactly. I have no interest in the rematch. I saw Funeka kick the crap out of Guzman in the first fight and get robbed with a draw. The fight is an IBF mandatory because Rolando Reyes passed on the bout after the purse bid.

paul (austin texas)

do you know how much the sonsona ppv on the 27th is gonna be?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

$34.95.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Looks like Mrs. Holyfield can take Evander's shots better than Buster Douglas could...

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Ouch.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

SRL was an HBO commentator? Was he any good?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

SRL did commentary for HBO for several years before George Foreman did. Ray was a star but never really had anything significant to say.

Aaron (Hartford)

That would sux if Paulie- Khan happens in Vegas...

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

It looks like now if it happens it will be in NYC.

Vinnie (New York)

If you had to guess, would you say the finals of the Super Six will be in the States or Europe. Or will it depend on the boxers who arein the finals for thel the site to be determined.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

According to my copy of the master contract for the tournament, the semis and finals are in the US.

bob (la)

1 vote for HOF, who gets it - jones/hopkins???

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Both. Period.

Robert (California)

What are your thoughts on why the rematch between Hopkins vs Jones taking so long to happen.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Because both guys have egos the size of Mount Rushmore. And when they finally made the fight it was too late for most people to give a damn.

Zach (MPLS)

Dan, Please tell Shelly Finkle or Richard Schaefer that the freaks thoughts and prayers are with Robert and his family. From what I'v read there doesn't seem to be alot of optimism this time around.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

It's a tough siutation, but I know everyone in boxing is pulling for Robert and Casey.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

We have breaking news Freaks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Courtesy of the Bat E-mail: The Super Six bouts are moving to April 24. Froch-Kessler will be in Herning, Denmark. It has not been announced what date Ward-Green will be on.

Andy (Owingsville, KY)

Chambers is an interesting opponent for Klitschko but I don't think he has enough power to be a real threat. Both Kilitschkos handle speed very well. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I think Klitschko will take him to school. Just not big enough or strong enough.

Andrew (Sydney)

Dan, you said that Pavlik deserves credit for his willingness to fight Martinez (the 154lb champ). Yet you refuse, as noted, to give Floyd credit for fighting the lineal champ at 147lb. You KNOW you just contradicted yourself. Lotsa respect if you can acknowledge the contradiction. Not waitin' on it though.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Andy, Andy, Andy. I am on record MANY MANY MANY times saying I never took issue for one second with Mayweather fighting Baldomir. In fact, I supported it and advocated for it. You need to do your homework son.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

For those interested, Spike TV is showing the documentary 'Facing Ali' on Monday.

Ricardo (Bronx, NY)

Dan, I'm watching Camacho/Rosario...Barry Tompkins was the lead play by play guy on HBO? How did Lampley get in the fold?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

He was hired after Barry's contract was up and HBO decided to go with somebody else.

Jon (DC)

D$, be glad you work from home. A red line metro train just derailed. It's an absolute mess out there. My commute home is going to be a nightmare.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Sorry to hear that bro. Thankfully, I have the home office.

John (Austin)

Everyone that wants to get on a plane to Sydney and kick Andrew's a** for dissing our man Dan raise your hand!!!

Joel Julio (Dan's basement)

Hi Dad! How come you don't call anymore?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Get ready for Angulo.

J (ATL)

Vitali offers Valuev 2 million and he is still considering?! Who does he think he is?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

A big giant, hairy Russian getting bad avice?

Cody (New York)

Hey Dan, reading the chat in my philosophy class...boxrec has khan v malignaggi and victor ortiz v nate campbell at the garden May 15th is that a done deal???

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Not even close to a done deal.

Joe (Buffalo)

Cody, raise your hand and ask your philosophy teacher what his opinion is on the sanctioning bodies... Maybe we can get some true philosophical insight into their 'thinking.'

Mrs. DTM (at work)

Any freaks in Northern Virginia want to come shovel our driveway?

Jon (DC)

Dan, what are Jones Jr's chances of upsetting Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Slim?

Derek (Brooklyn)

if it comes off, what do you think of Ortiz-Campbell? if there are questions about Victor's heart Nate will surely find out

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Good fight and MUST win for both guys. Loser is in bad, bad shape.

Q (CT)

Hey dan the man, I'm not a crazy floyd fan like some people but I just hav a question, Is the Pac-Clottey fight basically in the same boat as the Mayweather-Judah fight since like Judah, Clottey is coming off of a loss?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

NO it's not because Clottey lost to a top fighter. Judah lost to an unknown.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, You said earlier that you thought Tyson vs Douglas was Sport's biggest upset. Would you categorize Hagler vs Hearns as the most exciting 8-1/2 mins in sports?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

It's a great, great fight but I think Hagler-Hearns has become a little overrated.

freedom (bronx,ny)

dan you are just a hater. floyd has been calling shane out since 99 2000. this is his biggest payday. no matter you say floyd is the best.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Get out much?

Ray (Chicago, IL)

Hi Dan, I get your comments about the Soto-Diaz matchup, but as a big Diaz fan, I gotta think there's a chance he'll tighten up a bit and has a legit shot at taking Soto down? I mean, just a few fights ago he was considered a "good" opponent for Pacquiao, right.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

When he fought Manny, I don't know anyone who gave him a legit chance. They made that fight to cherry pick a belt and to test Manny at 135, which he had never fought at before. Pacquiao destroyed him and Diaz was off forever after that and came back and barely won against a shot guy. For him to face Soto -- for a vacant world title no less -- in the co-feature of a $50 ppv is an absolute disgrace and Top Rank should be ashamed to serve that up as a co-feature. My rule of thumb for a PPV is that at the very LEAST there should be at least one fight on the telecast that an HBO or Showtime would buy. That ain't the case with this ppv card. HBO and Showtime would laugh at every one of those fights.

Marc (Claremont, Ca)

Umm, at the risk of being called an idiot, where is the notebook?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Probably on the desk being read by an editor. It's out of my hands.

Brock (Illinois)

DTM, is there any indication where Ward-Green will be?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Oakland, probably.

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

I'm getting real tired of the term "hater"....

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

I am too.

Manny (CT)

Who wil Juan M. Marquez fight next since he opted out of Amir Khan fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Possibly a rematch with Juan Diaz.

Brian (Boston)

Do you think Valero is being overrated by boxing media? Many are saying he is a P4P fighter and could give Pac a run for his money.

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Because people always get way too excited in the wake of a nice win.

Brandon (Arlington, VA)

DTM... I'll shovel your driveway for a couple classic boxing DVD's. Deal?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Deal.

bk don (Brooklyn)

I'm confused about this guy maidana. Other than his win over ortiz, what other significant fighter has he beaten? It looks like he ko'd a bunch of stiffs overseas. if he was such a world beater, why did golden boy put their untested/undefeated fighter in the ring with him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

He hasn't beaten anyone but Ortiz, but he's very, very dangerous. He lost a very close title bout to Kotelnik, one many people thought Maidana won.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dtm with his career cut short does Vernon Forrest get in the HOF? RIP Viper..

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Vernon's murder was certainly a tragedy but it does not make him any more of a HOFer than before his untimely death. I would not vote for him for the HOF.

John (Austin)

Dan, fast forward to this date 2011. What/Who will we be talking about?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

There will be Freaks complaining about something Mayweather related.

Eric (North Hollywood)

Hey Dan, I noticed Kendall Holt is going to be fighting in one of Top Rank's FSN shows. Will his fight be televised?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

His bout is not scheduled for tv at this point.

Wes (Philly)

Dan settle a debate for me do you think Diego Corrales get's into the HOF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Chico probably does in. He has some big wins (Castillo, Casamayor, etc..), he was a popular fan favorite, he won titles in multiple divisions and he fought the very best opponents.

Nick (Sacramento, CA)

Is there any word if Judah-Shower Door II will be on the Mosley/Mayweather undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

I think the Shower Door is pricing itself out.

Fisher (Rhode Island)

Dan, would love to say I enjoyed the Notebook but...

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Dude relax. It'll be up shortly. Don't get so demanding or I'll ban your butt.

RS3 (Stamford CT)

Diaz vs Soto is barely a FNF main event. What a trash undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

How dare you insult FNF.

Greg (NJ)

Dan, Doesn't that new SuperSix conflict with the Adamek/Arreola date?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Obviously.

Eric (North Hollywood)

Dan, did you hear Gus Johnson's idiotic comment that PBF was better that pac-man because he was undefeated? I really wanted Bernstein to stop commenting on the fight & school him in some Boxing 101.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

I heard it. It just showed Gus' inexperience with boxing.

Ian (Pembroke Pines,)

Dan, Maybe you should give Arum the middle finger this time around for trying to sell such an atrocious undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I try to keep it polite and professional.

Chris (Washington, DC)

DTM is there any update on the bogus glove wrap Roy Jones filed against Danny Green?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Not that I am aware of. It's a lame excuse for getting drilled in the first round. Roy needs an alibi for being a shot fighter.

Danny (Orlando, FL)

They should offer Froch a bigger purse if he allowed his wife to be the ring girl for his fights.

bob (brentwood)

dan, truthfully, have you ever lost your temper with a boxer or promoter?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Of course. You don't do this as long as I have and not have that happen from time to time.

Marc (Potter, WI)

Hi Dan: Hope all is well. Been meaning to ask you: Are there any legit boxing reporters who think Roy took a dive in the Danny Green fight? It's only my opinion, but it sure looked like a dive. But why?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Dude he didn't take a dive. Anyone who really thinks that is just stupid.

D (NWT)

Just wanted to say thank you for all your blog posts ... Your the man, you kept me busy and informed throughout the Christmas holidays with the Pacquiao fiasco. BIG BIG FAN and you do a great job

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Thanks.

Jim Lampley (Tokyo)

"Mike Tyson has been knocked out"

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Classic.

Pancho (Los Mochis)

What would you think of tough as nails David Lopez as an opponent for Danny Jacobs?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Perfect fight a fight or two down the road for Jacobs.

Courtney Houston (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, do you think Winky Wright ever fights again in a meaningful fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I think he'll get at least one more fight of note, yes.

Matt (portland, OR)

Dan I almost choked when I read Castillo was fighting at Middleweight. Couple questions does he make weight and if he wins can he fight in the Super Six if someone drops out?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

As my hero Norman Chad would say, Pay the man Shirley!

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

We have breaking news via the Bat E-mail!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Have been told that Steve Cunnigham vs, Matt Godfrey (for the vacant IBF cruiser title) will be March 26 on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights! Tremendous main event! Taking the place of Cloud, obviously.

Brock (Illinois)

Bat Phone and Bat E-mail add excitement everytime.

Steiny (NYC)

Whatever happened to Lamont Brewster?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Lamon Brewster got knocked out in Germany a couple of weeks ago and is basically done other than his heart.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Dan, did you lose power at all during Snowmageddon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

A few flickers, but no, thankfully.

Aaron (Hartford)

Pretty funny how Steve Forbes signed with Don King and hasnt been heard from since...

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

It's not funny, it is totally expected.

Willie (Brunswick, PA)

Dare I say it, ESPN's first quarter FNF card is better than HBO's!

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

We have certainly had some kick butt cards on FNF so far this season.

George ((Fontana, CA))

Dan, have you ever been to Golden Boys Club Fight Night? If so, is it fun?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Yes, I went to one when I was in LA covering Klitschko-Arreola in September. Great atmosphere and a fun show. Fight fans should definitely check it out in person if they are in the area of downtown LA for one of the cards.

PeteNice (Philly)

Dan, kudos to FNF for getting this fight. Should be a great fight!

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Agreed. Cunningham-Godfrey is a good match.

Scott (Ogden)

Dan, in Vegas this weekend for my B-day. Ever been to Delmonico's steakhouse?? Any suggestions??

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Great place. My sister-in-law had a very small wedding and the dinner was there in the Venetian. Excellent place.

Aaron (ma)

so with Cloud off of FNF, it looks like he may fight Johnson on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Correct. That is quite possible.

Henry (Germany)

Dan, do you agree with Chad Dawson's handlers letting him have such a long lay-off? I know there is no marquee fight available, but shouldnt he be taking a lesser fight on espn2/fox...something just so that he doesnt lose so much momentum?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

He can't even if he wanted to -- he has an exclusive deal with HBO. He'll only fight twice this year most likely anyway so what's the difference if the first one is in April or June?

Nick (nyc)

i still cant believe its been 20 years since that fight - think about how much has changed in the world since then - internet, blogs, technology, wars, 9/11, economy, a black President - holy crap. What will the world look like 20 years from now???

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Feeling nostalgic are we?

elmo (nyc)

went to get documents signed; ordered, waited and took out lunch, then went to post office, and dan is still chatting

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Why would this surprise you at all?

Zach (MPLS)

Dan, So does that mean that Cloud-Johnson will be the co-feature of Berto-Quintana

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Very possibly.

Jim Lampley ((ringside Foreman-Moorer))

IT HAPPENED!!! IT HAPPENED!!!!

andy (uk)

Can someone please prevent the Morales-Alfaro fight happening...Is it true it will be at welterweight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Yes, it's true, which is what I wrote like three weeks ago.

Kolbe (Lancaster)

The Abominable SnowDan, Dodging or not, can we at least give props to Floyd for creating a precedent in getting blood testing into the sport? There are only a few boxers who can command this, and he's the only one doing it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

I only posted that because I liked the nickname.

Banishment (Tokyo)

Question for my master: because of the Tyson-Douglas anniversary, will I not be feasting on the souls of posters asking Tyson questions?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Yes, today it is ok to ask about ole Mikey, just nothing too stupid.

Kolbe (Lancaster)

The Abominable SnowDan, Douglas/Tyson biggest upset ever? I think I remember being this Hockey Game in 1980..

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Good point. Douglas-Tyson No. 2.

Danny (Orlando, FL)

What are your plans for your 5 year anniversary with ESPN.com next month? I think you should give us a 5 hour chat. jk

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Interesting idea.

Steve (NYC)

Prmoters should take a lesson on the Adamek card: Huge and lively crowd in a real market, not burried in a casino. This is whta boxing could and should be.

Matt (portland, OR)

Dan I just texted my fight friends and told them I got a Norman Chad and they knew what it meant and were stoked. You just made my day!

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Cool.

chris (oklahoma city)

Dan, please answer this, or the freaks if you don't know. Which fight did Lampley say "What an awesome show, what a GREAT, GREAT fight!!!" that was featured on the HBO telecasts back in the day?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

During Hopkins-Trinidad.

Brandon (Houston)

I'm sorry, but Chaminade beating #1 Virginia with Sampson is the all time greatest upset.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

You're allowed to be wrong.

Cristian (Jersey City)

When is Tyson eligible for the hall of fame? Or is he already in it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

He'll be eligible on the next ballot.

Ian (Miami)

Do you think if the knockdown of Douglas had been in the middle of the round Tyson would have finished him off?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Very possibly, but it didn't did it?

Greenberg (NYC)

Dan what ever happened to Tyson's goons John Horne and Rory Holloway?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Not sure. I assume they crawled back under their rock.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

I love the postings of some of Jim Lampley lines during historic boxing moments. Lampley is by far the best play by play man in boxing, if not all sports, IMO.

Danny (Orlando, FL)

Best quote ever by an announcer:Jim Lampley said, "Pacquiao has slowly disconfigured De La Hoya's beautiful face."

Left Coast DJ (Los Angeles, CA)

What does Kelly Pavlik have to gain by fighting an undersized Sergio Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

A seven-figure payday against a quality opponent. Duh.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

oj8yjbn

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Sorry, my cat Popo just jumped up on the computer.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

dan, do you think an in shape douglas would've given holyfield a competitive fight? most of the opinions i heard was that even a "ready to fight" douglas wasn't going to last long against that particular holyfield.

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Had Buster been in the kind of shape and metal frame of mind he was to fight Tyson, I believe he would have been competitive with Holyfield for sure.

Kolbe (Lancaster)

So, I've read every chat for the last 3 years or so, and everyone whines about you not posting them, I finally write in today and the first 2 questions I've ever submitted get posted. That's got to be some kind of record..

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth because they could be these could be your last three posts ever as well!

Charles (Philly)

How realistic is DiBella's concern that Pavlik will back out again? Does he have an alternate opponent lined up for Martinez, or is this just an effort to get a bigger purse for his guy?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

I think it's a legitimate concern. There's no bigger payday. It is what it is, he just wants to be sure that if the fight is finalized and something happens, based on past events, his guy won't be left high and dry. I can't blame him for asking and HBO should put Sergio on in the event Pavlik pulls out.

Joe (RI)

I guess if we can ask Tyson questions....Wouldn't Tyson/Douglas II be better than anything on the Pac/Clottey undercard? Yeah both guys are pushing 50 and weight over 600 bills combined, but still, can't be worse than David Diaz.

George (Fontana,CA)

Ok, this chatting with Dan and the fight freaks is addicting. I better get off now, I have so many deadlines and the phones are ringing havent done anything in this office. Looking forward to FNF!

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Don't leave. You never know what you will miss.

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Dan, since it is okay to ask Tyson questions: do you think he would've beaten Bowe in their primes?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I think Bowe at the top of his game would have been a big handful for Tyson.

Danny (Orlando, FL)

Your cat graduated from the same grammar school that Roger Mayweather graduated from?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

LOL!

"Shirley" (at AN undisclosed ATM)

Dannnnnnnnn, It's getting expensive to pay the man these days!

Cesar (Chicago)

On a normal Friday the first thing that I do when I wake up is read your Notebook. Today I looked and there's nothing. I know that its coming but I cant wait for it. I'm off to the bank to get my tax return money!!! Hopefully when I get back its there. Thanks Dan for getting me Hooked!!!

Dave (Rochester, NY)

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth because they could be these could be your last three posts ever as well"! Dan's lines are just as classic as Lampley's.

Robert (California)

What fights are you planning to see this year in person?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Taking it fight by fight but at the moment I know I will be at Alexander-Urango on March 6 (and in the FNF studio on March 5) and at Pacquiao-Clottey on March 13.

jim lampley ((ringside at Bowe/Goloata))

"now I'm gonna find my kid"

RonMack (Cincinnati)

DTM,You named your cat after Freitas?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Yes. And my other is Thunder, after Gatti.

Bob (Los Angeles)

How does Hall of Fame eligibility work? Do a certain amount of years have to pass before consideration?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Like in baseball, a fighter has to have been retired (or inactive as it were) for at least five years before they can be considered.

Tyler (Florida)

Any idea when Chris John may fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

He's supposed to fight sometime in the spring in Indonesia, where he is from. After that, he could be back in the US for a notable fight.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Ruiz has been inactive for far more than five years--- is he on the HOF ballot??

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

ollie (tx)

Hey Dan how close is the Cotto/Foreman fight close to being finalized or have I just missed you posting it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

It's being worked on. Not done yet, but I am pretty sure it will be finalized.

Floyd Mayweather (Vegas)

Stop all this Tyson talk. The dude has 4 losses. 4! I have 0, I would have destroyed him.

Jeff (Las Vegas)

I'm glad to see Rocky Juarez back. i know he lost all his big fights BUT he lost to the very best and i hope he gets just one more shot

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

The fight being discussed with Jason Litzau for the Jones-Hopkins undercard IS NOT set. Being discussed. Pretty good fight though. I woudn like to see that one.

Ryan (Troy, NY)

Dan are you planning on attending Pavlik/Martinez? If so, can I buy you a beer?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

I do plan on being there. That's a major fight. I'll go with a Sprite or Diet Coke.

Pete (NYC)

Since we're allowed to ask Tyson (or Tyson/Douglas) questions today... Jeremy Schaap wrote an interesting article about the fight, but one of his points was that Tyson was actually in top shape for the fight. Watching the fight, yes his body looked good, but that doesn't necessarily mean he was in peak form on the inside. What's your opinion on this?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Jeremy's article was very good. Mike was only like a pound heavier for the Douglas fight than he was for his previous bout and his body looked good, so I think he was in good physical shape. He would not have lasted even 10 rounds had he been in bad shape. Was he in perfect boxing condition or mental condition? Obviously not, but he was in good shape. You don't take a beating like that for 10 rounds if you are not in solid shape.

Norman (Silver Spring, MD)

You never disappoint, there isn't a chance you could let a chat go too long without some mockery of Floyd

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

There is not a chance I could let a chat go without banning somebody like you. You're banned.

PJ (vacaville)

what is the status of Jermain Taylor since dropping out of super 6? Is he retired or just taking a break?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

In his official statement, he said he was taking a break.

Todd (Redmond, Wa)

Very dissapointed in the undercard for Clottey vs Pacquiao. Even as a hard core boxing fan I think I will be loathe to pay out $50 to see this fight just for Pac vs Clottey. I cannot be alone in that and it makes me wonder why Top Rank does not put on some better matches.

Scott (Ogden)

Norman go lick some of that yellow snow in front of your trailer!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

When Freaks attack!

Jose (NYC)

For all of Tysons negatives- that boy could take a punch-

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

You're right about that. When I was at Lewis-Tyson I remember thinking, "Damn, he's taking some murderous punches from Lewis, I can't believe he is on his feet still."

Banishment (Looking for Norman)

Come Norman!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

We have breaking news via the Bat Instant Message.

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

I asked Gary Shaw about a possible Bradley-Judah fight and Gary in our IM chat said the following just now: Judah only talking smack. He was offered very good money, but seems to want a tune up and is talking smack. If he wants a tune up, he should go see an auto mechanic. So we continue the search for all these great fighters at 140 who don't want to really fight the No. 1 guy but want to walk around saying they are champions or want to hand pick opponents.

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

There you have it from Gary Shaw directly.

Luis (PR)

Wow even instant messaging Dan, you are revolutionizing sports reporting here.

Shower Door (Bathroom)

Gary-- Judah tried to duck me too.

JMM (In D.C. for the the free snacks)

mmmm. yellow snowcones . . . ..

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

Hilarious.

JOSE (TX)

is Jose Luis Castillo HOF worthy????

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Not even close.

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Gary just hit me back and says Funeka end of the deal is done for the rematch with Guzman and he is waiting on Golden Boy to confirm the fight for March 27 HBO card.

Luke (LA)

Dd Shaw say when Sergei Dzinziruk will make his US debut?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

I just IM'd him to ask and he responded that he is meeting with Artie Pelullo (his co-promoter) next week and that they will talk about it. He is hoping for April or May.

Mitch (Oakland)

Bat pigeon? Bat singing telegram? Bat skywriting? But wood carving? Bat bunch of naked protesters spelling out something on the beach?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

We have all methods of communication!

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Dan-- can you tell how many people log in to your chats-- what is the size of the Freak Nation?

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

I don't know for sure but it's many thousands.

Shower Door (Top Rank Gym, LV, NV)

Did someone say Zab is looking for a tuneup fight?

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

How many fights are on tomorrows Latin Fury PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

At least four.

Brock (Illinois)

I would like to download BIM (Bat Instant Messenger). Is it on the ESPN site?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

I don't think so.

Jose (Chicago)

HBO buys Guzman-Funeka???/ Where is the quality control ??

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Put it this way -- I don't make the decisions for HBO.

Brock (Illinois)

Notebook UP!

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

There ya go, Freaks. Have at it.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Gary Shaw, proving once again that he is not afraid to have his guys fight tough fights (or at least try to take them).

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

Love Gary or hate him, you can't argue about this: He puts his guys in real fights on a regular basis.

MC (USA)

Hey Dan, did you watch any old fight tapes while you were snowed in and if so which ones?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

I watched some, mainly some stuff I had gotten from Europe and Japan.

Ross (Indianapolis)

Random question, Dan - do any of the promotors or matchmakers listen to your opinion on what you think would make good fights? So many great ideas get thrown around in these chats and your blogs, I wondered if the matchmakers listen to the suggestions?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Sometimes.

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Hope you check out the notebook and the blogs and news stories from the week. Enjoy the fights this weekend. Just some housekeeping -- I won't be chatting next week as I will be on a brief vacation. But I will be back the following week. Peace.
