Chat with Calvin Watkins

Calvin Watkins
  (3:11 PM)

Sorry, I'm late guys, had trouble finding the chat on the 101. I'm in LA for a few days.

joel gutzmer (whitewater, wi)

hey do you think the 'boys have a legitimate shot at playing a home superbowl game next year man!?!?!?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:13 PM)

Joel,Yes, I do believe the Cowboys have a good shot. They are the defending NFC East champs and next to the Saints, Vikings (if Favre comes back) and Giants should be the favorites to win the NFC next year. Dallas has the depth and a veteran club that is almost as good as anybody's in the league.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:14 PM)

Ken,You had an average season. You should have played better, now I know you missed four games with a high ankle sprain but you didn't make enough plays on the ball. Your nickname is The Hammer. We didn't see that last year. We need to see that this year. I would suspect the Cowboys are looking at a safety in the draft. They have too.

jeff cook (pine island)

hey man, what kind of music do you listen to...lil wayne...t pain...i have a feeling you are a t pain kind of guy...

Calvin Watkins
  (3:14 PM)

ill Wayne. But really, I'm a Jay Z guy.

John (New Jersey)

Calvin - any indication of what the Cowboys will do regarding the draft? I see the biggest needs as O-Line and D-Line.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:18 PM)

John,I don't believe the Cowboys will draft for the defensive line this year. They have depth at that position and believe some of the backups have a future. As for the offensive line, yes, expect someone new to join the team. Doug Free's progression last year gave the Cowboys hope that he does have a future left or right tackle. The issue is inside. Guard Kyle Kosier is in the final year of his deal and I was told he wouldn't mind testing the market again. So, if that's the case, draft a guard and possibly a tackle. Marc Colombo didn't play as well as the team had hoped in 2009, so this could also mean he might look over his shoulder a little bit.

Luke (Dallas)

Do you think Romo is going to continue to hold PATs next year? Any chance we cut Stephen McGee?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:19 PM)

That's an interesting question. Mat McBriar did it last year, but hates it. I wouldn't think he would do it again. Romo also hates doing it, but only did it to help Folk. I'm not really sure. If I put my paycheck on the line, sure Romo holds next year. McGee will return.

Javier (Lubbock, Texas)

Do you see Antonio Cromartie wearing the big Star on his helmet for 2010? Will Marion Barber stick around or will he be traded? If so, what is Barber worth at this point?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:21 PM)

I don't see Cromartie coming to the Cowboys at all. The team likes its two starting corners in Newman and Jenkins. Both are coming off a Pro Bowl season, though Jenkins playd better than Newman and was more deserving. Scandrick is somebody the team likes. He regained his confidence as the season wore on and has a bright future. He's the x factor. If Scandrick continues to play well, he will start over Newman in the future. I'm not sure if you can get anything for Barber because of his huge contract. He's due about $7 milllion this year, $4 million is guaranteed, so I 'm not sure if anyteam wants to pick up that salary.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:23 PM)

They need to sign Miles Austin long-term. After that, take are of three defensive linemen, Hatcher, Spears and Bowen. All three are restricted free agents, so give them a tender deal and be done with it. Get a kicker. It's stunning to learn that Nick Folk, a man who the Cowboys drafted, is no longer on this team. His confidence went down fast. Draft a safety and some offensive linemen as well as a running back.

peter (toronto canada)

What do you think the Cowboys will do with thier first round pick in this years draft? And do you see them trading one of their running backs?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:25 PM)

Peter,Love Toronto, great city. Reminds me of NYC. I'm sure the Cowboys discussed trading one of their three running backs but you have to wonder what can they get for Marion? Should you trade Tashard? And if so, what do you want in return?Felix seems to be the only running back worth keeping.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

why do so many fans use the word "we" when referring to their favorite team? Unless you are a a paid employee, it's "they" not "we"

Calvin Watkins
  (3:27 PM)

Matt,Fans feel apart of the team. I'm a big Knicks and Yankees fan and sometimes I say, we got a game tonight. I don't, my team does. Even when we cover the Cowboys, I'll say to somebody, "yeah, we got a game in Philly." But I don't the Cowboys do. It's just an expression. Nothing to get upset about.

Sam (Fort Worth)

The Cowboys need to get a big name receiver since we all know Roy E Williams is no good. What are the chances they can go out and get a guy like Brandon Marshall?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:29 PM)

I know Brandon Marshall's agent would love to get him to Dallas, but it's not happening. Miles Austin is the lead receiver right now and Roy Williams/Patrick Crayton/Sam Hurd/Kevin Ogletree are the other ones. That's how it is. I don't think the Cowboys will get a big-time wideout. Drafting one in the later rounds of the draft seems like the way to go.

Heather Humeniuk (Owatonna, MN)

Hey, you rock and I love reading your work man! you think any other team would be willing to give up a first and third round pick for Miles Austin?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:32 PM)

Heather,The problem with Miles is that he had a great season and everyone wants to know can he do it again. And the reality is nobody really knows. The Cowboys take a chance on him by giving him a tender of about $3.15 million and if another team wants to match it, well, give up the first and third round picks. But is Miles austin worth a first and third round pick after only one season? No he isn't because he hasn't proven himself on a consistent basis that he can put up these numbers. So give Austin his tender and if he plays well in 2010, then lock him up long-term.

Jay (St Croix, US Virgin Islands)

What impact will 2009 rookie IR guys (e.g., Robert Brewster, Brandon Williams, Stephen Hodge) have on the 2010 draft? It seems like the Cowboys almost have to make room for these cheaply signed young guys in 2010.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:34 PM)

The team likes Brewster but his injury slowed him down. So he needs to prove himself again. Williams and Hodge have futures, but they can't show it unless they're on the field. These injuries hurt a players progress.

Sam (Fort Worth)

What if they had the chance to draft Dez Bryant with their first pick? Do they pass on him?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:34 PM)

I don't think Dez will be around when the Cowboys draft late in the first round. but if say he is around, then, yeah, draft him.

Justin (Durango)

Do you see the Cowboys getting a new punt returner for next year? Crayton was really hot and cold.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:41 PM)

The Cowboys have tried for years to find a punt returner and have failed. Pacman Jones was supposed to solve that problem but couldn't and come to find out, Crayton and Newman were better than him.

Mac (Ct)

Do you really believe that Felix is the only RB worth keeping, Barber played terrible the last two seasons, but your telling me Choice isn't worth keeping?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:52 PM)

Yes I like Felix. He and Tashard Choice would be a great team. I like Choice he's a complete back and Felix is a nice change of pace runner.

Nathan (Waterloo)

My biggest concern with this team going in to next year is they will be over confident, and we'll have 2008 all over again. Do you think they will be over confident?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:59 PM)

Nathan,No I don't believe the team will be overconfident. The team believes in Wade Phillips and his style is to take it one-game-at-a-time. And that's what the Cowboys have done.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:59 PM)

Guys, I have to go. Take care.
