Hello folks. Very busy day today at Daytona. What's your take on the green-white-checkered change?
Who's your pick for the NW race on Sat.?
I'll go with Tony Stewart. You didn't think I was going to pick Danica, did you?
Do the practice speeds mean anything at Daytona?
Not entirely. One car can get a big push and have a fast lap. But racing in packs gives the team's a good indicaton how the car will handle in the race.
Great article about Junior! But one thing I would like you guys to address sometime and make these drivers understand fans make this sport. I went to kansas and texas in 2009 and bought garage passes and stood by juniors hauler on friday and sunday and he always snuck out all I wanted was a diecast signed that I paid 65.00 at his merchandise hauler for and then another 250.00 to be get garage passes for him to sneak out and blow his fans off. I was gonna get season passes again but now have decided against it so with nascar saying attendance is down they need to talk to their drivers and make them undersand that the sport is hurting so sign a few autographs for fans are gonna go a long way
Junior is one of the best at trying to accommodate fans. But it's dificult for these guys to get to everyone. At they are extremely busy on a race weekend.
NASCAR is talking about using and extra green-white-checkered overtime at the end of a race if there's a caution on the first one. They are going to try it in the qualifying races and see how it goes.
I'm watching practice now. What's up with Hamlin. He almost wrecked Brad in the first practice and now he ran into Junior.
Everybody still is trying to figure out the closing rate with the bigger plates. You have to experiment a little to see where the limit is.
Who is the guy to beat this week for the 500
My pick is Kyle Busch.
Kyle Busch has won 12 Cup races the last 2 years, do you think he wins more than 4 times in 2010?
I think winning races is secondary to Kyle at this point to winning the championship.
Terry, Jr's car looked awesome in practice today, he seemed to be able to pass anyone he wanted to. Do you think that the shootout bust is something to worry about or should we expect Jr up front all day Sunday?
Don't read much into the Shootout. Jr. is very happy with his D500 car.
Terry, who has a better chance of winning the Chase - Gordon or Hamlin? Please don't answer "Jimmie Johnson".
I'd say Hamlin if his knee holds up.
Just had a big crash in practice. JJ involved, but didn't hit anything. Bliss started it. Joey also in it.
Allison, Pearson and Yarborough appear to be locks for the HOF class of 2010, which other two in your opinion are most deserving to be in the second HOF class?
Maybe Darrell Waltrip and Lee Petty.
whats your take on the new rules for talladega and daytona, and do you think they wont change again?
I think things are gonna get wild, as we've already seen this week.
"I think winning races is secondary to Kyle at this point to winning the championship."I think that statement just summed up what is currently wrong with Nascar.
I agree is some ways, but the truth is points are more important than winning.
Why do you say Jr is at a crossroads? Jr will always have a ride and fans no matter what he does. Someone will hire him if he wins the title or if he finishes 35th.
True, but he no longer will be considered as a leader in the sport and a serious copntender.
Why isn't Jeff Gordon getting more consideration as a serious contender this weekend?
Gordon always is a contender here. He isn't my first pick, but he'd be in my top 5.
What's the deal with the new Green-White-Checkers rule? I'm certainly all for it, but I NEVER thought it would happen. Owners, namely Jack Rousch, have complained about how much stuff gets torn up on a typical race day. Figured they'd put the kibosh on anything like that happening. Is this change from the town-hall meetings NASCAR held with the teams?
It's another move of NASCAR doing what the fans want. The fans don't wants races to end under caution, which is what happened in the Bud Shootout Saturday.
What is your take on what to expect from Juan Montoya this year. Can he win a race or two this year? Is the dynamic between the 1 and 42 better this year?
Much better with Jamie. And I expect JPM to win on an oval this year and contend for the championship.
when NASCAR makes changes like the potential green white checkered change, they claim to do it to improve things for the fans. where do they get "the fans" input from? does the media pass along complaints? is there a competition committee with "fans" on it? they just go buy attendance and tv ratings?
They have a fan council now of more than 12,000 people who give them input.
What exactly is the RPM relationship with Roush? Do they get chassis and engines from Roush and put the cars together themselves (like SHR and Hendrick) or is Roush actually building the cars for RPM?
RPM gets engiens for the Roush-Yates engine shop. But RPM builds it's own chassis.
which driver/team is nobody talking about that could suprise a lot of people in 2010?
I'd say Michael Waltrip Racing, a team on the rise with Truex replacing Mikey. Ambrose was a huge surprise last season and Reutimann also stepped up.
Terry, with NASCAR laxed rules with bump drafting, do you seeing everyone behaving until the last 10 laps or will they be bumping from the start?
No way they behave until the last 10 laps. Things will happen way before we get to that point.
What is this new rule with green white checkers NASCAR is thinking about? Will teams be mad if thay calculate fuel milage only to lose the race because it went a few gwc tries and they ran out??
That could happen. But remember, if they get to the white flag, it's still over. This only changes it if they wreck with 2 to go.
Mr Blount, hope you're good. Hey, I know I may be labeled as a blasphemer, but, to me, the Truck Series race is typically the wildest and best show of the weekend. Thoughts?
Absolutely. The truck race here usually is the best show of the week.
whos your pick for the daytona 500?
Kyle Busch. I think the looser rules play into his hands.
I'm not sure if Dave (Springfield) cares for NHRA, but those drivers are ALWAYS great about hanging out and talking to fans. If you like all sorts of racing, check it out.
The NHRA guys are far and away the best in racing. But they also don't have as many fans demanding their attention as Cup drivers do.
I'm making a prediction for 2011, Harvick at SHR in the number 92 Shell/Pennzoil chevy, with a reverse paint scheme. How far off do you think I'll be?
I don't know about the number, but the rest wouldn't surprise me.
TB, care to set the over/under on when the Big One comes out to play? I'm saying lap 130.
I think it will come sooner, based on what we're seeing in practive. I'll say Lap 90.
Do you think that this could be the year the 5-88 shop at Hendrick surpasses the 24-48 shop.
I don't know about surpassing them, but they have done everything possible to duplicate the dual-team, one-unit approach, which I think will benefit Jr. greatly this season.
will lions ever win a super bowl?
Yes, and Joe Nemechek will win the Cup championship.
Who is your dark horse for the Daytona 500?
with the 500 starting earlier in the day, will the sun glares be an issue at the end of the race? and what's your overall take on moving all the starting times to 1 pm this year?
I'm a huge supporter of earlier start times. I believe it what most fans want, the way they grew up watching NASCAR. With the 500 ending in daylight, the biggest factor is the track will be slick and hot, making them loose, which will play into the hands of drivers who can handle a loose car.
Ok.. Now who is your dark horse for the championship this year.
Ooooh. That's a much tougher question. A really big darkhorse is Jeff Burton. Less of a darkhorse _ Kurt Busch.
Who do you think wins the most races this year in cup?
Terry, If you see Jr in garage, tell him: "sometime, when the team is up against it -- and the breaks are beating the boys -- tell them to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Gipper..."
He'd get a laugh out of that. Jr. is quite a fan of sports history, so he would know that old Notre Dame yarn. And I'd bet he has seen the movie with Ronald Reagan.
Is this a do or die year for David Ragan?
He certainly needs to show some major improvment, but he also was a victim last year of a down year at RFR.
Is it fair to say that Junior is Kyle Petty as Senior is to Richard Petty? Or do you think Dale still has something to prove. I know he isn't his father but his days in Busch racing advertised a better racer than what he has shown recently.
Kyle is one of my favorite people in NASCAR, but Junior is a much better driver than Kyle was. Junior had 18 Cup wins. You don't do that on a fluke.
How long before Kyle Busch starts getting annoyed about Hamlin's success and starts hinting at a JGR exit?
Kyle just signed a new multi-year contract with JGR. He isn't going anywhere.
Which drivers do you see making the 500 through the duels tomorrow?
I think Waltrip can make it. Sorenson has a good shot. Scott Speed has a fast car.
Who do you have for California? Almost any driver has a shot at Daytona.
I expect the Roush cars to look good at Cali. I'll pick Edwards to end his winless slump.
Is Jamie Mac a darkhorse to make the Chase this year? He looked like he belonged in that Bass Pro Shops #1 car and drove the dirty banshee like a pro during the Bud Shootout.
It's probably a stretch for Jamie to make the Chase this year, but not out of the queston.
Do you see Jr. having to be more of a Hendrick team player (i.e. looking at other teammates' setups) in order to enjoy more success this season?
That's the key point and that's what he says he's doing. He's working very closely with Martin and CC McGrew is doing everything in conjunctin with Alan Gustafson.
Why isn't Monster Energy with a more winning organization than Robby Gordon?
Probably because they don't won't to pay the money it would take to be with a better team.
Terry, since NASCAR relaxed the rules. how do you think the racing is going to change on Sunday?
More aggressive, more wrecks and more bumping.
What is it with JGR drivers and Jr? Hamlin in practice and when Brad drove for him and then obviously Kyle Busch. And to think Jr almost signed with them a few years ago.
There's no conspriracy here Matt. It's just practice at Daytona. Stuff happens.
just watching the second practice on tivo and saw Mike bliss take out Lagano. What happened to him he didn't even get touched but snapped around and took out a bunch of people for no reason
No surprise to see a car get loose coming out of a turn at Daytona. The set-up on the car may have been off. Or, as my friend Buddy Baker wouls say, sometimes a guy just runs out of talent.
Which oval do you think JPM will get his first win at?
I'll guess Atlanta.
Terry, who do you think will have the biggest suprise finish of the race on sunday?
Martin Truex Jr.
is knaus regarded as a unanimous #1 crew chief? who would be considered the top 3 crew chiefs?
Tough question, but Greg Zipadelli is highly respected. So is Bob Osborne.
Do you see Jr and Martin running the full races tomorrow or just protecting their spots on the front row?
If they are in position to win at the end, they will give it a shot. But both drivers will be in safety mode for the most part.
Is it just me, or doesn't it seem a little unrealistic for Joey Logano to make the chase in 2010? A lot of media picked him
We didn't pick him to make the Chase. Joey is going to make the Chase many times in his career, but probably not this year.
do nascar drivers ever get tired of driving
Drivers love being in the race car as much as possible, but they somtimes get tired during the a long race, especially on a really hot day.
Can Kahne take down Daytona? He looks awfully sporty out there.
Kasey hasn't won a plate race yet, but it's bound to happen soon. A win Sunday wouldn't shock me.
Gotta run folks. Good questions today. Have a great week. I'm out. Peace.
