Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly chat. Plenty of stuff going on. I started today's chat an hour later than usual because I was on a conference call with Manny Pacquiao, Freddie Roach and Bob Arum, who were discussing the upcoming fight with Josh Clottey. But I am here now and ready to go. New notebook is up as well as several blogs this week. The schedule is updated, so check that out before you ask about when a certain fight is taking place. Let's get to it.

David (Cape Canaveral)

So DTM, its final definately no US tv for Wlad-Chambers? No last minute deal is possible?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

NO THERE IS NO US TV FOR THE FIGHT. Are we clear?

Matticus (Orlando, FL)

Mr Rafael..is Berto/Quintana-Cloud/Johnson a done deal? tickets on sale?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

The fights are on. There is a press conference March 3 in Miami. Tickets will go on sale shortly thereafter. The fights will take place at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

Jofechi (Conakry, Guinea)

Danny, sentiments aside, objectivity inside; if you are a member of the Nevada commission, will you support olympic style random testing for a bout if one of the boxers make the request?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

No. What I would support is the commission changing the rules to make blood testing standard for all fighters.

Martin Rodriguez (NYC)

Dan, if you could clear up my confusion regarding tomorrow "Double Assault" PPV. Exactly which fights will be televised? Correct me if I'm wrong but are these the fights: Sonsona-Vasquez Jr, Negron, Arroyo twins from PR and only the Mayol-Nino fight from Mexico. I've also heard the Oquendo fights will get televised and I've also heard one more undercard fight from Mexico will get televised. Exactly which and how many fights in all?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

From Puerto Rico you will see at least Sonsona-Vazquez and the three young Olympians and from Mexico you will see at least Mayol-Nino and a lightweight fight between Daniel Estrada and Angel Alirio Rivero.

Scott (Waltham, MA)

Dantonio: I'm heading down to Mohegan for Alexander Urango next week. Saw Steve Forbes and a bunch of names I don't recognize on the undercard. Anyone worth paying attention to in the early fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Unfortunately, it is a horrible undercard. When Derric Rossy in a rematch with Zack Page is the co-feature, you know it stinks.

Jordan (Newfoundland, Canada)

Hey Dan,I looked back at Sergio Martinez's boxrec and I saw he got stopped by Margarito a while back at ww. Do you think he's a much different fighter now or could he still succumb to straight ahead pressure?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Totally different fighter. I have a tape of that fight between Martinez and Margarito. He was a young fighter back then without much experience. He has developed into a much, much better fighter.

Alex (Louisville)

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: When can we see him in the US? I read about him in your 2009 prospects and he sounds like the real deal with amateur wins over some big names. Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

He is unlikely to fight in the US. He is based in Germany and I expect him to stay there.

John (Portland, OR)

What's the status of the proposed P. Williams v Cintron fight? ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

It is still being talked about but there is no deal yet as far as I know.

Mitch (Oakland, CA)

Mornin' fine sir. What's taking so long with announcing the Ward-Green location? Considering your point in the blog that they were weeks late in announcing Green as the replacement, I'm not entirely surprised. It's a few miles to Oracle for me, but I have other plans I need to make if it isn' t happening locally.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

I have no idea what the problem is.

Prophecy (Chicago)

Hey Dan do you really think Arum and Roach are serious when they say Manny might retire after his fight with Clottey if so why when floyd who will beat mosley will be sitting there...?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

They don't say he is retiring after the fight. That was a subject of discussion on our conference call just before the chat. It is simply one possibility, but I do not think for a second Pacquiao is retiring after the fight. No chance.

joe heredia (bronx,new york)

dan, do you have any peronal problem with joan guzman

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Other than that I would rather do your laundry than watch him fight, no.

Henry (Northampton, MA)

Whats up Lord Dan, Two of your favorite fighters are goin at it Julio vs Angulo! Who do you thinks gonna win?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. And Perro. Should be an exciting fight. I really love both guys but I think you have to like Angulo in the fight. My heart says the Love Child. My heads says Perro. May the best man win.

scott (NO)

Excited for Khan vs Paulie?? Kind of like that fight myself..

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I like the fight a lot. I wrote about it months ago in the hopes it would happen and it's just about done.

Ryan (El Paso)

Dan,What are your thoughts on Tyson and the HOF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

That he will be elected when he appears on the ballot for the first time. It's a no brainer. He won't be eligible until next year.

chuzen (st. louis)

how close is valero v peterson? a real possibility or just arum playing another one of his games?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

It's a possibility for sure. Top Rank has discussed the fight with HBO.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

That Martinez/Margarito fight was 10 years ago. It was fought in Vegas @ the Mandalay Bay... any idea if it was a part of the undercard for a major fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

It was on the undercard of Morales-Barrera 1.

Lou (Detroit)

Dan, looks like boxing is back to its oversaturation of PPV events. This can?t possibly good for expanding the base of boxing fans.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

What is oversaturation? PPV fights happen because promoters and fighters want to work. If no network wants to buy the fight they take their chances on PPV.

Bryan (Washington, DC)

How early do I need to show up for the Mayweather/Mosley DC presser to get a seat?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Probably earlier than me.

JD (DC)

Hey Dan,In your experience, do these boxing press conferences start around the time advertised? I am trying to get the day off, but right now the plan is to leave work for an ?extended lunch? to attend in here DC. But I can picture missing it if I have to get back to work and the fighters roll in two hours late.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Timing is always slightly sketchy but I think this one will roll on time. The fighters will be in town the night before after the NYC press conference, so I think it will go off pretty smoothy, especially since they go right from DC to the airport for their flights to LA for the presser on Thursday.

Brandon (San Diego)

Dan Im curious as to why there was no mention of Harris being the victim of bad officiating in the Weekend Wrap, yet you felt so strongly about it in your blog which was posted after the Weekend Wrap? Did you even watch the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Well in my weekend scorecard I wrote that Vivian was wobbled by a decent punch and that they complained about a bad stoppage. I thought it was sooooo bad that I expounded upon it far more detail the following day so I am not sure what your issue is. Of course I watched the fight. If you go to my blog I even linked the fight video to it so all Freaks could see it.

Jordan (Ohio)

Hey Dan is is true that the moved the Abraham Dirrell fight to Detroit MI?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Yes, Gary Shaw told me the fight will now be in Detroit, either Cobo Arena or Joe Louis Arena.

Lenny (NYC)

Where will Vivian Harris rematch take place?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Oscar told me the other day he is working on it but there is certainly no deal or date or venue yet.

Shane (Selah, WA)

Dan, I have never been a big Vivian Harris fan, but hopefully he gets the re-match. Looked to me like he got jobbed last weekend.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

He did get jobbed.

Aaron (Hartford)

Any idea who Sergio Mora is going to fight on the Jones undercard ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

TBA at the moment.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Dan, how sick would a Giovani Segura vs. Roman Gonzalez fight be? It would be a nice BAD/Shobox undercard. The winner could fight Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Love it. I think a more realistic fight thought is Segura vs. Calderon without a Gonzalez fight. But I'd take either.

E (Omaha)

D$$ - Back to when Tyson is elected to the HOF for a second. Will you be attending his induction??

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

I can't plan what I am doing on Sunday. How am I going to plan for something a year-plus down the road?

Jake (AK)

Do you think we'll ever see a Maidana vs Ortiz rematch? if so, outcome?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

I think if they both keep wining we'll see it eventually. Considering how the first fight went and how both guys did damage, I would view it as another tossup.

Alex (Florida)

Does the possibility of Foreman-Cotto taking place at such a significant venue like Yankee Stadium increase the likelihood of HBO picking it up or is that irrelevant at this point?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Yankee Stadium certainly plays a role in that decision. HBO and Top Rank met this week and they are talking about it doing it on live HBO and the network has made a solid offer. Top Rank is crunching the numbers to see if it works for them.

Robbie (Denton, Tx)

Dan, you excited about coming to Dallas? And have you heard what they think the attendance will be ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I am very psyched about the trip to Dallas. I have heard so many great things about Cowboys Stadium. Arum said on this week's calls that they are nearing a sellout of the stadium as it is laid out for this fight, which is about 45,000. The seating can be expanded if necessary, so it's possible more seats will be opened if they go clean on the 45,000.

Tyler (Memphis)

Read in your blog that A. Peterson will fight the winner of Soto/Diaz in June. Any chance that fight landing on the undercard of Coto-Foreman?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Very possibly but it's not set. Top Rank has several bouts it is considering. It also depends on if the Foreman-Cotto fight goes on HBO or on PPV. If it's on PPV there are more televised slots available. If it's on HBO it would only be two TV bouts. So it's a fluid situation.

Marc (Philly)

Will you be in AC for Mike Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

No. I have travel the next two weeks with next week's trip to Connecticut for FNF and the Alexander-Urango fight followed by Dallas the week after I decided to stay home this weekend. Seeing Mike Jones beat up on poor Henry Bruseles was not my idea of a fun road trip.

Craig (Pittsburgh)

Whats up Dan.. I know you are not ticketmaster but any word on mayweather-mosley tickets.. when they go on sale, are they priced sky high etc??

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

I asked Richard Schaefer about that yesterday. He said the tickets probably go on sale on Tuesday (the day of the first press conference) and they are priced ranging from $150 to $1250.

Ricardo (Bronx, NY)

Hey Dan, who's comeback is worse-off? Erik Morales or Hulk Hogan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Gotta go with the Hulkster.

Henry (Columbus)

I'm sure you are aware Simmons is having a chat right now... you won't let him outlast you, will you? Prove your dominance... make him say "no mas".

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I'm always up for a challenge.

Victor (Kansas City, KS)

Who do you like Victor Ortiz or Nate Campbell? BTW when is the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

The fight is supposed to be May 15 in NY on the Khan-Malignaggi undercard although Richard Schaefer said it was possible it would move to May 15 on the Mosley-Mayweather card.

Aaron (Hartford)

Spinks vs K9 on FNF possibly ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Possible. That is what Don King told me this week.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan why is Arum trying to keep Gamboa so active and not Juan Ma... Honestly Dan would you admit Yorky is a much stronger and better fighter but Juan ma has puerto rico?? Conspiracy theory or do you think it's accurate? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

What are you talking about? Gamboa is fighting in March in Germany, where his co-promoter has a tv deal. Then they will both be back in the summer.

Chuck (Houston)

DTM!!! Who do you like in the Arreola vs Adamek matchup? It is indeed a great heavyweight fight built for an all-out slugfest.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

It's a terrific matchup. I think Adamek is capable of outboxing Arreola, who better be in great shape to keep up with Adamek. I thought Adamek looked good in the 220 range he fought in when he faced Golota and Estrada. Arreola has good power, obviously, but if Adamek fights smart he can win the fight.

Cesar (Chicago)

Hey Dantastic I was looking throught he Boxing Hall of Fame Website and I did not see Julio Cesar Chavez in there. Why is that? Do you think he is worthy of the Hall?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Of course he is. But JC Superstar has not yet been retired for 5 years. When he is eligible, he will obvuiously be elected on the first ballot.

Walter (Albuquerque, NM)

Why hasn't there been a Pavlik/Martinez press conference? Is the fight a done deal yet? If not, why?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

The fight is made and has been announced. Tickets are on sale and I believe there is supposed to be a press conference in the next week or two.

Benjamin (Little Rock, Ark.)

Hey, Dan. I was surprised to read in your Vazquez article that Wilfredo Sr. and Jr., if the latter wins a world title, would be the first father-and-son world champions. Given so many boxers have a family history of boxing, and the plethora of world title belts out there for the taking, I'm surprised this hasn't happened already.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I didnt write they would be the "first" father-son combo to win titles. There have been others, including Guty Espadas Sr and Jr and Floyd and Tracy Patterson.

Michael (Hollywood, CA)

I'm glad you had a break but last Friday really sucked.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

It was great for me. I was on a short vacation in San Diego visiting family and was probably at the San Diego Wild Animal Park during the chat time.

ken (new york)

When will you co-host FNF again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

I will be in the studio a week from today. And then the next morning I will head out to Mohegan Sun to cover the Alexander-Urango fight.

Cesar (Chicago)

Do you think that it is worth ordering the Vazquez fight tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

You know what? I like the card. I really like Sonsona-Vazquez and I think Mayol-Nino could be interesting. The show isn't for everyone, but I love Sonsona-Vazquez and am definitely getting it.

Ray (Camden, NJ)

Dan, why Funeka vs Guzman II? do you think guzman has any chance?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Why oh why indeed.

Matt (Naperville,IL)

Is Hasegawa fighting Fernando Montiel on April 30th?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

No, complete BS.

Jon Cruz (Santo Domingo)

I Have no problem with Joan Guzman, he makes my 2 year son sleep rigth away.!

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, After listening to BHop assert that he was looking to "clean out" the light-heavyweight division, including a possible match with Dawson, do you believe that or do you think he'll go for one final "big fight" if he gets past RJJ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I don't believe for one second that BHop is going to fight Dawson. If he beats Jones I think he'll look for the Haye fight if it's doable.

Brendan (Chicago)

Dan, I know it was Maxim magazine, but did you get a chance to read their "investigative" report on all that transpired with the Gatti suicide/murder?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I haven't seen it but Carl Moretti from Top Rank mentioned it to me the other day and suggested I check it out. So this weekend when I am out and about I will look for it.

J (Atlanta)

looking way ahead, what are you thoughts on mares-perez? i am really looking forward to it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Absolutely love the fight.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

The Golden Boy "movie theater experience": a good choice for a first date, DTM?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Depends if she likes boxing.

Mo (Jersey)

Do you think Adamek/Arreola will be in Newark?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

No, it is in Ontario, Calif.

Keith (Winston-Salem, NC)

Dan, who is the top dog in charge of booking fights for ESPN FNF? I just want to thank him for a fantastic two months!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Doug Loughrey is the boxing programmer and he's done a great job so far this season. It's been great, especially when you consider the tiny budget he has to work with compared to HBO or Showtime.

BJ (LA)

Dan, who is the better prospect, Jose Benavidez or Frankie Gomez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Jury is wayyyy out but Gomez has several wins against Benavidez in the amateurs, including in the US Nationals for the gold medal last year.

Moe (NYC)

How can I attend the press conference on Tuesday????

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

By walking or driving or getting a cab or bus or train to the site?

King (San Francisco)

Will Donaire fight Darchinyan or will he fight Montiel in Mexico on May 8?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

I'm not sure which fights will be made but Top Rank is talking about Montiel fighting his mandatory, Eric Morel, on that May 8 ppv.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, I agree with you about Adamek vs Arreola. I am looking forward to seeing that fight. Where does the winner go from there? A fight with either Klitchsko just doesn't amp up the excitement meter!

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I'd love to see the winner face David Haye.

Paul (South Side)

Dan, any plans for Mayweather-Mosley to be shown in movie theaters?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I try to be nice but questions like this make it tough. Read today's freakin' notebook.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Any revelations/theories from that Maxim article on Gatti that you can briefly mention?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I haven't read the article yet.

BJ (LA)

Dan, is the rumor that Telefutura will do boxing again true?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I've been hearing the rumor for a couple of months and when I put it to Richard Schaefer and Oscar De La Hoya in separate phone calls this week both issued no comments. Something is up I believe.

Eric (North Hollywood, CA)

Big ups to GPB for putting b-hop vs RJJ in the theaters. No way I was gonna shell out $50 for the fight. But I will see it in a theater since a ticket will be pretty cheap.

Q (Waterbury)

I almost did a backflip when I heard the Mosely-Mayweather fight would be in theatres..any idea when they'll release the list of available theatres to see the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

It hasn't been announced yet.

Duff (Abington, MA)

I think the Cunningham-Godfrey fight should be pretty good. Good job by FNF, picking up another quality fight that otherwise wouldn't get seen.

Bing ((Stupidville))

Who's totally psyched for the comeback of Hector "Macho" Camacho?!?!?!?!

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

I'd rather take Tyson and James Kirkland questions and answer questions about stuff already in today's notebook and on the schedule than talk about that dreck.

Tommy (Detroit)

Hey Danamaniac, I did a double take when I saw Herbie Hide in the top ten for Cruisers.. and he is on a 13 win streak?? Wow.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Exactly.

Ricardo (Bronx, NY)

Simmons FEARS Rafael!!!

Ken (Brooklyn)

Why are they not holding the Khan Mali fight at the actual Garden? You might get some English fans there, you have the Brooklyn people for Paulie.Throw Duddy on the undercard and a young puerto rican fighter and I say you could easily get 10k people for that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

The Theater is a perfect venue for the fight. It will be a hot ticket and a sellout. The main arena is a big gamble when we don't know yet how Khan's fans travel and Paulie, while a New Yorker, is not an automatic draw there. As for Duddy, he is with Top Rank and not on the card. And, frankly, Duddy's drawing power is way overrated judging on the fan support he had at recent fights at the Theater.

Cadillac (Chicago)

Do u fear for Danny Jacobs? I do since every time u name ur top prospect they go out an get schooled...See J. Diaz.V. Ortiz,J Julio,A. Khan...What did Jacobs do to deserve this jinx?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Idiots abound. Go read the list of all prospects of the year. I don't need to defend myself to you.

Matt ((Naperville,IL))

What's the deal with Hasegawa-Montiel? Is it happening or not?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Like I already answered, NO IT IS NOT HAPPENING. Montiel's people say it is simply not true, they have no deal and they have no idea why that would be announced.

Marv (Dallas)

On the schedule, you've got a Top Rank/Fox Sports show scheduled for 3/6 but no fights listed. Any idea who might be put on that card? Those cards have been great thus far even if I've had to watch half of them in Spanish.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

March 6 is in Mexico and being handled by Fernando Beltran, who is not the most organized dude in the world.

Marc (Philly)

Just three weeks until history is made in Germany. And yes, I know that Eddie Chambers will be in the best shape of his life when he beats Wlad.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Just three weeks until I say I told you so.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan do you see Kosta Tzysu making the HOF? When is he eligible?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Defintely. He'll be elibible 5 years after his last fight. I think next year.

Dustin (Wichita, KS)

Have you heard any update on who Sergiy Dzinziruk might be fighting, now that he is promoted by Gary Shaw?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

He is with Gary Shaw and Art Pelullo. There is nothing set for him but I know they'd like to get him on Showtime maybe this spring. I know there has been a conversation with the Carson Jones people about a possible fight.

Steve (NYC)

Is Botha- Holyfield really happening?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

It seems that way, assuming Holyfield is licensed in Nevada next week.

Chris (PA)

DTM, how about a guest spot for you on Simmons' podcast talking boxing? He is a big boxing fan and you're both ESPN employees, isn't that like Bob Arum making an easy fight with two TR boxers?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

If Simmons wants me to be on his podcast all he has to do is call.

Shaun Hatch (Jonesboro, Ar)

I'll be at "The Event" in Dallas...will you be making the trip?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Of course.

Vinnie (Vero Bch)

Speaking of D. Jacobs, is he gonna fight Manfredo next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Unlikely. That was a fight Oscar mentioned but there was no real merit to it at this point. Jacons will be back on March 27 on the off TV HBO undercard, although the network can show clips of his fight if there is time. If Danny comes through that he will be back likely on May 1 ppv undercard or possible May 15 on the Khan-Malignaggi televised undercard. Nothing is set yet though. He needs to come through March 27 first.

Bozo (Ringling Bros. Circus)

Mr R.,do you take meds to deal with the goofs who don't read the notebook, your blogs, and the regular reporting here on this site? Is it as frustrating as a slo-mo replay of a Ruiz fight during a snow storm?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Pretty much. I need to go pick up my pills.

Jeff (Las vegas)

Cadillac thinks that every time you name a prospect of the year he has to be the new Muhammed Ali or you're wrong! I'd say your prospects have done pretty damn good

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

I agree. Hmmm, seems like guys like Cotto, Taylor, Sam Peter, Khan, Berto, etc... have done pretty well for themselves.

Cadillac (Chicago)

Dan, Why am I an idiot? When it's clear u can't pick a prospect to save ur life. Ur approaching Teddy Atlas type territory with the jinxes.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

I tell you what tough guy -- go through the list and you tell me who should have been picked in the year that I picked somebody else. I dare ya.

Gad (STL)

Wait, are there really 2 fighters named McWilliams Arroyo and McJoe Arroyo?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Yeah.

Hartford (CT)

Welcome Cadillac

BJ (LA)

Dan is Mike Jones being promoted by Peltz or Top Rank?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Russel Peltz is his promoter and he made a deal with Top Rank on this card.

tony (Cleveland)

when will fsn show the fights from last night? here in cleveland, they are showing the cavs tonight. any more replays? anything on fsn espanol?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I have no idea. FNS doesn't show them all. FS Espanol does. For example, last week when I was in San Diego visiting my in-laws, they get a bunch of FSN stations and Fox Espanol. None of the FNS stations carried the Segura fight. So my father-in-law DVRd the show on Fox Espanol so I could watch later that night. Now this week is different -- where I live in Virginia, we get the Mike Jones show on both the local FSN affiliate here as well as on Espanol. Just gotta check each week.

Luis (PR)

I'd rather have an intellectual conversation with Bing, than watching Botha-Holyfield.

Dustin (Wichita, KS)

Cadillac is an idiot because he thinks "When it's clear u can't pick a prospect to save ur life." is a sentence that an adult would write.

Brent (Detroit)

Dan the Man! Thank you so much for letting us know Dirrell-Abraham is coming to the Detroit. I absolutely have to go that. So are you coming to Detroit for that or will you be in Vegas that night for Golden Boy's card?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

I will be home watching both on television and then probably hosting an RAD chat afterward.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan you mentioned this week that shawn porter may be better served moving down to welterweight. don't you think the same is true for the love child?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

I actually do think it would be good for the Love Child. However, at least Julio is the same size as other 154s. Porter is shorter and has shorter arms then almost all of them.

John (ATL GA)

Dan...freak status....Today I got in huge fight with boss and ended up calling her the b-word. well she fired me and told me to leave, but i told her i'm not leaving till after your chat. she is now calling security. Freak???

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I don't even know what to say on that one other than dont call me with your one phone call.

J (Atlanta)

Hahaha the Bing jokes never get old.

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

They really don't do they?

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, if you compare picking boxing prospect of the year to #1 draft picks for nba and nfl i think you have done pretty well. it's easy to go back after the fact and say who should have been the pick.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

We have breaking news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

LAS VEGAS, (February 26, 2010) - The countdown is on and the hottest night in boxing is about to get hotter as tickets for the much-anticipated mega-fight between Boxing Superstar FLOYD "MONEY" MAYWEATHER and current WBA Welterweight World Champion SUGAR SHANE MOSLEY are set to go on sale Tuesday, March 2 at 10 a.m. PT. Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

That is directly from the Golden Boy news release I just received.

bill (carmel, ny)

FS espanol was also one of the pleasant surpises i had when visiting in-laws in florida last week! FYI, the ortiz fight was online last night on ringtv.com, wish that fox sports could do that too.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

I watched the Ortiz show online last night because it was not on TV as it had been promoted by Golden Boy. Big disappointment.

Tommy (Detroit)

I love these guys that question your prospects after a couple years in the pros... That's like saying you're an idiot for thinking the Colts could win the SB. Geezus.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, instead of berating people for asking stupid questions, why not refer them to BING.COM?

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, where were you last Friday?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

In San Diego relaxing.

brian (scottsdale, az)

I saw in your notebook that the deal for the fight in theaters was with NCM Fathom. Is that the name of the movie theater company? I just want to know so i know where to look

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

It's the name of a company that works directly with numerous movie theater chains on distribution.

Gary (Falls Church, VA)

Have you heard what time the Mayweather/Mosley press conference kicks off in DC on Wednesday?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

It is scheduled for noon.

brian (paradise)

Mayweather must be on crack he calls Mosley a c list fighter but says he's a hall of famer since when does a c list fighter get in the hall of fame I understand hyping a fight but those comments dont make sense

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Because Floyd doesn't think before he speaks sometimes.

Andrew Dice Clay (NY )

Joel, last Friday Dan and I were both witd your mother! heyyyyyyyyy

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

LOL! I laughed at that because I remember going to see Dice in concert back when I was in college. That dude was pretty funny, even if highly offensive to some.

Rick (Marina)

Im very pumped about the card HBO has put together Arreola vs Adamek and Julio vs Angulo. Will you be attending this awsome event.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

I won't be making that trip.

Nick E (Chillicothe, OH)

Did Victor Ortiz fight last night? If so, what was the result?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Yes, he knocked out Alatorre in the 10th round with a nice uppercut.

Frank (Clifton Park Ny)

Is there any rational explanation why Don King would demand $4,000,000 for his fighter coming off a loss getting a title shot? I mean who is Valuev going to fight instead? Yeah....NOBODY!

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Because Don is Don.

sam (houston)

will there be a 24/7 for jones vs hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

No. It's not even an HBO-produced ppv.

Braindamaged2too (the Asylum)

Big D., With all due respect to the doofuses arguing over prospects of the year.........would you say Francisco Bojado was the biggest bust of prospects who people looked for big things out of???

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

By far. And EVERYONE had him as the top prospect in boxing at that time.

Tom (San Diego)

Will Pacquiao-Clottey be also available in theaters?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

No.

Jeff (Alabama)

Are you going to Jones-Bhop?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Yes. In fact, I just got my travel ticketed yesterday.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Wait didn't Floyd say that Gatti was a C+ fighter? That means he thinks Gatti is better than Mosley???? I loved Gatti but there's no way!

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Exactly!! I thought of that too.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Dan-- you comment that "Floyd doesn't think before he speaks sometimes" implies that he occasionally DOES think before he speaks. I find that implication highly improbable.

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

My bad.

sammy Alsaidi (dearborn/queens)

who's the top 5 pound 4 pound trash talker fighters of all time?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

I'm not keeping a list but among the best in my time covering boxing I would have to say (in no particular order): Rahman, Hopkins, Darchinyan, Mayweather, Mayorga and Miranda.

mike (Pa)

why did they put arreola vs adamek in cali wouldnt they sell more in newark i mean adamek sold 10,000 against a no one and no with a good heavyheight more people from new york will come and make the fight bigger

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

That remains a mystery.

Rick (Marina)

Whats up Dan, So whatever happend to the notion of boycotting the Pac and Clottey fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Who had that stupid notion? Why boycott a good fight?

Sam (Penn State)

Man did Ortiz look really tentative last night.... I'm a huge fan of his, but last night wasn't particularly impressive.

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

I agree. It was a nice knockout but an otherwise unimpressive performance.

Terry (Bronx)

How come Shelly Finkel is making the Klitschko's duck James Toney?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

What an utterly moronic statement. Why should they give James Toney a shot when he hasn't done anything remotely notable for a few years?

Shawn (Tempe)

Simmons going on 3 hours...just saying

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

When he gets past 5 I might be impressed.

Anthony (Des Moines, IA)

Will there be a 24/7 for Mosley/Mayweather? Is HBO considering bringing back the 30 minute countdown shows for it's WCB?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Yes, there will be a 24/7 for Mosley-Mayweather. And there is a 30-minute countdown for Pacquiao-Clottey.

Nick (New York)

No Mayorga as best trash talker? He was the best in my opinion.

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

I added him to the list if you go back and look.

richard (oxford, United Kingdom)

Danno, any updates on whenKhan-Malignaggi will be made official. Really looking forward to that one!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

They are working through the paperwork. I would think in the next week or so.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Aspiring heavyweights out there, take heed in Chris Arreola's advice: "I became a heavyweight because of Coronas and burritos".

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

A classic quote from Cris.

evan (venice, ca)

trash talking. no james toney? come on!

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Good point. He should be on the list too.

Marc (Potter, WI)

No Ali on the trash talker list? He was the progenitor of it!

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

I prefaced my list as saying "in my time" -- meaning since I have covered boxing. I didn't cover Ali.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

It snowed a lot over here Dan, so I had the day off from work. Now I'm chatting with the freaks in my underwear. LIFE IS GOOD.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Too much info dawg.

Kevan (Los Angeles)

Why is it boxing never gives the fights that the people want?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

You're crazy. We have gotten tons of fights that fans have wanted for several years. Is there a fight once in awhile we don't get? Sure. That's life. But for the most part it's hard to complain. Except about Mayweather. That's easy.

Randy (Milwaukee)

"What an utterly moronic statement." It's good to have you back, Dan. Prince Naseem up there on the trash talker list??

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

Yes, Naz was also a great one in that department.

Johnny (Temecula)

Don't you feel bad that Clottey is going to get beat up?

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

For your reference.. the full Gatti in Maxim article: http://www.maxim.com/sports/articles/86260/to-death-gatti-vs-gatti.html

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Thanks.

evan (venice, ca)

am i crazy for feeling sorry for the klitchkos? they dominate, but nobody seems to care. it's like larry holmes all over again.

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

I wouldn't feel sorry for them at all. For what purpose?

tony (poland)

Is Pawel Wolak a prospect?

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

He's entertaining to watch but I don't consider hima big time prospect.

David (PA)

Any chance that any of the Heavyweight titleholders will fight anyone of note this year? And whats with BIKA, I feel bad hes left out of the SM tourny

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Don't feel bad for Bika. He blew his chance to be in the tourney by turning down a box-off with Allan Green. He has nobody to blame but himself.

Gil (NYC)

Ever been to a Broadway boxing card? I'm considering attending the March 31st show

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Sure, I have been. Usually entertaining club shows.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, You mentioned before that one of your biggest upset picks was Rahman vs Lewis I. What was your worst pick?

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Probably picking Rahman to win the rematch also.

bill (carmel, ny)

nobody in usa may care about klitchkos but a lot of people in europe do.

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Exactly. Wlad will have a crowd of over 50,000 at the Chambers fight.

Rags (NYC)

Now that Valuev and King have priced themselves out, are Vitali's last 2 fights likely to be Solis & Haye (assuming he doesn't get Ruiz-ed)?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

I have no idea. Solis is possible. Haye who knows? He messed up the fight the first time around and now he has a mandatory to worry about first.

JG (Houston)

"I'm a natural heavyweight. I became a heavyweight because of Coronas and burritos. That's the truth. But I've been a heavyweight for 29 fights. That's the way I see it." Chris Arreola is not going to be beat for quote of the year.

Vick (New York)

Should Mayweather be criticized for not making the 144 lb limit against Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

Umm, yeah. I think we did quite a bit of that around here last fall.

Jonny (Fallbrook,CA)

DTM... Assuming Pac and Money both win. Do you believe if Mayweather vs Pacquiao were to be televised with a major network's support the way the Super Bowl is televised that the fight could generate just as much ratings and sponsors? Therefore, generating more money that PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

No.

David (Cape Canaveral)

Dan, please put this debate between my co-worker and I to rest. The term "pro" is short for prospect when reffering to fighter, right? He thinks I'm wrong?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

For real? Is this up there with the acne question? Or Bing? It's short for "professional."

Victor (Kansas City, Kansas)

What do you think of the match up of Saul Alvarez v. Matthew Hatton? Big step up in competition for Alvarez, don't you think?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Probably a good action fight and a test for a young guy like Alvarez.

J (Atlanta)

HAHAHAHA dan sometimes I think you put up with more than a kindergarten teacher.

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

At least I don't have the wipe the noses or butts of any Freaks.

Sam (Maryland)

Speaking of Marquez, I heard he came to DC this winter because he was promised all the YELLOW snow he could eat.

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Ahhhh, Marquez pee jokes. They never get old either.

Bucky (Denver, CO)

Help a fight freak out. I have DirecTv and I couldn't find yesterday's Golden Boy card or tomorrow's Top Rank card on any of the FSN channels. Can someone tell me what channel it is on. I have the sports package and just about everything they offer and couldn't find the card. Please help a fight freak out.

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

The Golden Boy card may be replayed in some markets tonight (although not here in DC). The Fox card -- check Fox Espanol and you will find it.

David (Bing's House)

The term 'REF' is short for REFried beans right? Could you put this to rest for us?

tony (tampa)

When was the last time you watched a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Last night when I watched the Fight Night Club show on my computer.

Garth (CT)

Has there been an instance of a fighter fighting after they had been elected to the hall of fame?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Yes. Sugar Ray Leonard, Azumah Nelson and Jeff Fenech all fought after they had been elected to the HOF after five years in retirement.

Frank (Boston)

Dan, please put this debate between my co-worker and I to rest. The term "southpaw" refers to a fighter who has a father below the mason-dixon line, right? He thinks Im wrong.

Tom (Princeton, NJ)

DTM, I love how on the Alexander-Urango conference call, it seemed as though everyone had a different, big greeting for you!

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

What can I say?

Jason (LA)

David, the term "ID" is short for idiot!

Shane (Selah, WA)

Dan, I also picked Rahman over Lewis in the first fight. My worst pick of all time...Jorge Luis Gonzales over Bowe....Worst pick ever.

Allan (Dallas)

Clottey has never been KO'd but has he been knocked down before?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

Yes. Cotto dropped him in the first round of their fight last summer.

Mark (NYC)

Maybe Marquez's brilliant management team can get him a fight with Edwin Valero in Hugo Chavez's parking lot for $30k. Is Nacho Beristain the dean at the Winky "Bad Decisions" Wright Boxing School of Business?

Bing (Philly)

I had Peter McNeeley over Mike Tyson

The Good Dr. Filth (Cleveland)

Unbelievable...comedic genius. I just got out of a meeting, I'm catching up on the chat, and I get to a question, apparently serious, about the Klits ducking James Toney? I don't think I will be finished laughing until this chat is over...we all know how long that could be.

David (Houston)

I am very pleased to read that Jones-BHOP will be shown in theaters. I wanted to see it but could not justify ordering the PPV but now I can watch without forking over all that cash.

Bucky (Denver, CO)

Dan I know this may be along shot, but would you happen to know the # to DirectTV? They dont have the fight on there Spanish channel. I figured you might know since you know about distribution deals and what not. Thanks for the help!

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

So now I am apparently Ticketmaster AND the phone book.

Ankur (New Jersey)

Dan, has Mayweather ever been knocked down before?

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

There a BS knockdown called against him when he fought Carlos Hernandez. The ref ruled that he touched his glove on the canvas, but I never thought he did. And even if he did, the reason was not because he was punched and hurt but because he had a bad hand and when he hit Hernandez he reacted by kneeling a little and maybe his glove grazed the mat. He has never suffered a real knockdown.

Cesar (Chicago)

I am going to order tomorrow's fight because I have seen Vasquez fight on Telemundo plenty of times and also because The Philipino is supposed to be the next Manny Paquioa. Dan you also said you were ordering it and that definitely convinced me. Thanks, I hope!

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

I hope too, but don't believe the hype on Sonsona being "the next" Manny. With all due respect to Ricky Hatton, there is only one Manny Pacquiao.

Chris D. (Chicago)

I had Michael Grant over Lennox Lewis. But I wasn't the only one...

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

Ouch. That was the fist fight I covered after I was hired as the fulltime boxing writer for USA TODAY. I picked Lennox in that one.

Jamal (NJ)

Dan, I lost my phone and had my cousins # programmed into it. I know this may be a long shot, but do you know my cousin Terry's #? I figured because he also went Binghamton, that you might know? Thanks for the help!

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

LOL!

Chris D. (Chicago)

Wow, Bucky... that's the laziest post I've ever read. I mean, you're already on the internet and you just asked a pro sports writer for a phone number. And by pro I mean prototype.

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

Bucky is an idiot.

Nathan (Dallas)

Any news on what is going on in Dallas the weekend of the fight? Parties? Events?

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

Well I'll have a lot of work to do. Can't speak for what else is going on.

Ricardo (Bronx, NY)

Simmons has just tapped out....

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

No shock.

Charles (Philly)

Very excited that Mayweather-Mosley will be in theaters. I saw Mayweather-Marquez at a theater in northern Virginia, and the atmosphere was fantastic!

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

Boxing fans never agree on anything but every single person I heard from regarding their theater experience for Mayweather-Marquez was positive. So I am glad these other fights will be offered in theaters as well.

Chris D. (Chicago)

What a first fight to cover... I mean, that was the fastest decline of a boxing star I've ever witnessed. I remember meeting Grant during a workout once in Brooklyn -- super nice guy by the way.

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

It wasn't the first fight I covered, just the first one after being hired full time at USAT.

alex (dallas)

Who do you think is better, ali or tyson in their prime

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

Are we really going down this road?

sosmoney (New York, NY)

Mayweather DID touch the canvas with his glove after being hit hard by Judah but was never called!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

True.

Aaron (MA)

any upcoming dates on Telemundo that you are aware of?

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

Here is the tentative Telemundo schedule for the rest of the year: March 19 Mexico City; April 30 Miami or Kissimmee; May 14 Mexico City; June 4 Miami or Kissimmee; July 23 Mexico City; August 13 Miami or Kissimmee; Sept. 10 Mexico City; October 15 Miami or Kissimmee; Nov. 19 Mexico City; December 3 Miami or Kissimmee

Marisa (Jersey)

I like Brian Kenny! He's awesome.

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

I'll let the big man know.

Danny (Orlando, FL)

Dan, I'm thinking about buying a Macbook Pro. I know this may be a long shot, but should I wait for the refresh or buy a current model.

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

Apparently now I am also an electronics expert.

Gordon (New York)

D-$$: i didn't realize Roy Jones tested positive for steroids until I read Hauser's article on steroids from SDBoxing. Why isn't he shunned by fans and the media the way McGwire and Sosa have been? Seems to me like his entire legacy should be called into question, and i used to be a big fan of Roy.

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

Roy used an over-the-counter product called Ripped Fuel, that was not banned at that time.

Chris D. (Chicago)

After you answer Alex's simple question, here are a few more to chew on: What is the meaning of life? If a tree falls in the woods, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Could you please summarize Einstein's theory of relativity in ten words or less?

leo (Chino, CA)

i know you hate Antonio Margarito but why doesn't the CSAC give him his license back already so he can prove all the critics wrong!!!? he's done his time and wether he was caught trying to cheat he never did cheat!

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

I don't hate Margarito, I just don't like that he won't come clean on what he did. And if he wants to fight again in the US, he should, in my opinion, clean up his mess in California before going to another state to ask for a license. Simple as that.

The Good Dr. Filth (Cleveland)

Banishment just jimmied the lock on alex (dallas)'s window. I'd warn him if he didn't have it coming.

Jeff (Ohio)

hold on now - Simmons started at Noon...Big Dan has time left to catch him...just sayin'

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

I have done more three-hour and four-hour chats than I can count.

Chad (Washington)

Dan, heading to vegas on May 1st. this will be my first fight to attend, are weigh-ins free for people who want to attend and what can i expect from attending a live fight at the MGM?

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

Cool. Hope you have fun. Yes, the weigh in is free and open to the public and will take place in the main arena. However, the entire arena is not open, just part of it to hold probably around 5,000. So you may have to get there early and camp out for a spot. But if you get in line early you should have no problem getting in.

mike (los angeles)

watching the hockey game dan? 2-0 USA right now

Dan Rafael
  (3:18 PM)

Hockey = Pathetic Ice Jamboree.

Jay (VA)

Dan, you going to the March 6 show in Fairfax, VA, or will you be watching the HBO show that night.

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

I will be at the HBO card.

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

OK Freaks, thanks for the chat. Hope you check out the notebook and blogs and enjoy the fights this weekend. Talk to you next week from lovely Bristol, Conn., in advance of my studio appearance on FNF. Have a great weekend. Peace.
