Chat with Matt Mosley

Mike D (Kiladelphia)

What's up Mattman? Is there any chance the Eagles could end up with Antrel Rolle at Free Safety next year? AZ is reportedly going to cut him, and he wants to play in Miami, (who DOESN'T want to live/play in Miami?...) Is there any chance we jump on that? Or maybe Darren Sharper? We need someone of their calibur that's for sure. Also, if Taylor Mays runs a sub 4.4 40 at the combine, do you see a team converting him to OLB?? I mean, 6 foot 3, 231 Lbs., at sub 4.4 speed, coming off the edge? You ever seen 'Taken'? Good luck. >:^)Keep on keepin on Mattman. Beast!

Mosley
  (12:01 PM)

Mike D:I need to see that movie, Mike. Is that the one with Liam? I think it is. I think Rolle would be an excellent fit with the Eagles or the Giants. Heck, he'd be an upgrade over Ken Hamlin in Dallas. So yes, I think it's something that all of those teams will consider. Oh, and it's not like the Redskins are completely set at safety. So just throw the whole division in there. I don't think Mays will move to LB, no.

bill (philly)

Who do you think will have a better combine mclain or spikes?

Mosley
  (12:02 PM)

I think McClain is the better player, but Spikes will likely test better. Saban did a lot of things to protect him in that D.

paul (ft. smith, AR)

matt- Do you see a scenario that would bring Tomlinson to Dallas? i.e. the Cowboys trading Barber or Choice secondary help and opening a spot.

Mosley
  (12:02 PM)

Nope.

bill (philly)

What do you think of the gmen now having to 2 Gilbrides?

Mosley
  (12:03 PM)

Nice family atmosphere there in the Meadowlands. I don't really have much of an opinion on this. Junior's a quality control coach. Let's not act like he'll have some huge impact on the game plan. But hey, it's a great opportunity for the guy.

Mike (San Diego)

Have you heard anything more on the Cromartie Choice talk?

Mosley
  (12:04 PM)

That deal doesn't really make any sense, Mike. The Cowboys have Newman, Jenkins and Scandrick. Do they really need Cromartie?

Greg (Kansas City)

So Choice gets only 1-2 touches a game, why not trade for a starting quality corner when you have a fragile 30+ year old corner and a backup that is targeted heavily. Seems like an easy trade to me if I am Jerry

Mosley
  (12:04 PM)

See my previous answer. I don't think the Cowboys' pro personnel guys are really that big on Cromartie.

Mosley
  (12:05 PM)

I think Spiller's the top RB. The kid from Cal will be off the charts at the combine.

Chris D'Angelo (Barnegat, NJ)

Matt, do you think that the Giants LB's are kind of in the same boat as their receivers were last year? Young, talented guys who just haven't had a chance to shine and once their # is called, step up and do quite well? I think that Goff, Kiel, and Sintim showed a lot of promise last year. They looked lost at times, but that experience could lead to better play. They are very intelligent and might be able to put it all together this year. Your thoughts please.

Mosley
  (12:07 PM)

I don't think you can afford to stand pat when you have an awful season like that, Chris. I'd think pretty long and hard about Karlos Dansby. You can't just sort of dismiss last season. That unit really struggled. That said, I think Goff and Sintim will continue to show improvement. But not enough to just stand pat.

BigJim (Ogden, UT)

Matt, 1. Do you think anyone in The Beast considers Ladanian Tomlinson worth a look? 2. Do you think the Cowbodies will move up in the draft to grab, I dunno, a tackle?

Mosley
  (12:08 PM)

Cowboys are hoping to stay right there at No. 27 unless something crazy happens (Dez Bryant has a free fall). I think Shanahan will take a look at LT.

Cody Schultz (Waukesha, WI)

Hey Matt,I've been a fan of the Dallas Cowboys since I could walk. I absolutely love Jerry Jones but am gonna have to admit he made a terrible decision in trading for Roy Williams. I was wondering if we could trade him for a draft or draft picks and if there is a Wide Reciever in the draft the Cowboys have their ey on?

Mosley
  (12:08 PM)

Not even Al Davis would take on that contract, Cody.

Chris D'Angelo (Barnegat, NJ)

Hey Matt, what do you think the chances are that the Giants go after Darren Shaper? He would be a instant upgrade at safety and we would have to worry about him picking off Eli anymore.

Mosley
  (12:09 PM)

Rolle might be a better fit, Chris. Wait, you just snuck in an extra question. You've been banished from the chat -- for at least 15 minutes.

osi (ny)

do you think i'll be a giant in 2010?

Mosley
  (12:09 PM)

Yep.

RP (Hartford,CT)

What's the chance the eagles keep Kolb and Vick? I have a feeling that Kolb's 2 game display was great but far from convincing. I don't see why it's farfetched for us to keep Vick. At this point, he has never been given a true chance to start. I don't think he's as burned out as others suggest.

Mosley
  (12:10 PM)

Vick's gone. Kolb will be back unless some team gets really desperate and offers a great package for him. And that's not going to happen.

David Clinton (Leechburg, PA)

i know it depends on if the boys get a top caliber FS in the draft. but what odds do you give on K.Hamlin being on the roster come game day?

Mosley
  (12:11 PM)

I'd go ahead and unload the guy now. But I'd say it's 50-50 with Hamlin.

Sean (Austin, TX)

Matt, please tell me the cowboys have learned from their past errors at safety and have no interest in a workout warrior with poor pass coverage skills like taylor mays.

Mosley
  (12:12 PM)

From what I've heard, they think Mays and Allen out of USF are pretty close in ability. Allen might be the better fit for the Cows.

cowboynfceast (Philadelphia)

MM what is the best the Eagles can expect to get back on a McNabb trade?

Mosley
  (12:12 PM)

Late first-rounder, early second. And that's the BEST scenario. If the Vikings get desperate, maybe they'll put a nice package together with a second- and a fourth-round pick.

Jason (Buffalo)

Name a secound round sleeper in 2010?

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

J.D. Walton, the center out of Baylor. He'll start in the league for about 10 years. Someone like the Ravens will take him. Because they know how to identify and develop O-linemen.

Nick Wayne (Dallas, Tx)

What are the chances of Buehler becoming the FG kicker in Dallas?

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

Nil

Brian (MD/DC)

Hey Matt! How likely is it for the G-Men to get Dansby and Rolle from the Cardinals? I think its pretty interesting how both of them will address the serious wholes in our defense. Rolle and Phillips in the backfield will be sick....

Mosley
  (12:15 PM)

There are other teams in the competition, Brian. The Eagles would also take a long look at Rolle. I think the Giants ought to make a strong play for Dansby. Really good player.

Hog.Brew (Austin)

Any thought as to the Skins picking the kid from Cal (RB Jahvid Best) in the Second Round?

Mosley
  (12:16 PM)

Let's see what happens with Chester Taylor in FA. That would be a good guy to put with Portis -- if Shanahan decides to stick with CP. But no matter what, it would be good to find an RB in the draft. The Cowboys and Giants have had success drafting RBs in the later rounds. Might be a good idea for Shanny and Co.

Brendan (Spring, TX)

How many O-Linemen does Dallas need? The Vikings game was lost up front.

Mosley
  (12:18 PM)

It's not a question of how many. You need to draft and develop young O-linemen. It's that simple. Guys like Pat McQuistan and the kid Weber haven't really worked out. But it looks like Doug Free's a player. You just keep trying to take the best players and see what you can do with them. Remember that the Cowboys lost their third-round pick out of Ball State last season to injury. Let's see what kid has.

Jason (Manhattan (NY))

Are there any other potential suitors for McNabb other than the Minnesota Vikings? If Favre comes back will the market for him be that weak? Thanks Matt.

Mosley
  (12:19 PM)

If Favre comes back, you'd have Cleveland, St. Louis and the Cardinals involved. As I've said before, the Eagles don't really want to trade McNabb to an NFC team. That's the last thing they need is him leading the Vikes or the Cards to a Super Bowl title.

Bob (DC)

If the Skins move to the 3-4 what do they do with Andre Carter? Can they get a mid round pick for him? i dont want him playing OLB.

Mosley
  (12:20 PM)

Bob, that's where Carter has to play in a 3-4. Sorry man.

Mark (Tennessee)

What do you think of Titans picking up Peppers,Tomlinson and Dansby in free agency?

Mosley
  (12:20 PM)

Keep dreaming big dreams, Mark.

sam (wpb,fl)

what do you think the giants are going to do in the draft? trade or stay put? and what position they'll draft first round?

Mosley
  (12:21 PM)

They're at No. 15, Sam. I think they'll stay put and take someone like Spikes or even McClain. You could use some help at LB or safety. I'm not sure how much they like Mays. I'll visit with Jerry Reese in Indy.

Josh (Richardson TX)

With the way Free played this year (dispite your weekly questioning of "Will Free stop (fill in the blank)", how likely do you think it is that the Cows wait until at least the second round to take a OL? and real quick, who takes the division this year Halo's or Rangers?~~so sayith the one who shallnot be named!

Mosley
  (12:24 PM)

Josh, I'm worried about the Mariners. Have you seen the top of that rotation. There two guaranteed wins every time those guys go out. That worries me. But I love the Rangers' chances this season with all the depth in the rotation. Lots of questions, though, with the lineup. Catcher, Vlad, Hambone...If one of those offensive tackles like Bruce Campbell slips a bit, the Cows will snatch him at No. 27. They're not drafting for need. Take the best player -- unless he's a QB.

Dan (DC)

Which Beast team is Dansby most likely to land with?

Mosley
  (12:24 PM)

Giants

brian (New York)

Matt, do you see Julius Peppers as a good fit for the G-Men at all? He could play DE and Kiwi could go back to OLB. It would improve the LB's and DE's.

Mosley
  (12:25 PM)

Not a good fit. I think Philly would be a better fit -- and I don't even like Peppers there. This guy's 30 and I'm not sure about his attitude. Could be another Jevon Kearse to Philly situation. I've mentioned that several times and I've noticed that my guy Les Bowen from the Daily News has hit on the same theme.

Justin (Idaho)

Who do you think the cowboys will draft at #27?

Mosley
  (12:25 PM)

As of today...Nate Allen

BLUEMAN (INDY)

How long before we see TO at Wrestlemania working for Vince McMahon?

Mosley
  (12:26 PM)

Week after his retirement sound about right? This man will NEVER go away.

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

is Romo going to be the cowboys franchise QB? I think he aint that great

Mosley
  (12:27 PM)

Romo IS the Cowboys' franchise QB. And after his '09 season, I'm not sure what more you need to see, Hayden. Are you blaming the Minny playoff loss on him?

Dennis (West Springfield, VA)

Are the Giants really interested in Peppers or are they just thrown into the rumors since they like DEs so much? Also, is there a DT in FA that would fill a spot for them or do they need to grab one early in the draft?

Mosley
  (12:27 PM)

Feels more like a rumor at this point, Dennis.

phillip (long beach,ca)

With Doug Free playing well last year for the Cowboys. Wouldn't it make more sense for them to target a player who could play c/g because after the starters they got nothing.

Mosley
  (12:28 PM)

Keep your eye on Baylor's J.D. Walton. Gurode can't play forever. And Walton can also play a little guard if called upon.

Brendan (DC)

What do you think the skins should do with the 4th pick? Bradford, Clausen, Okung, or maybe even Berry?

Mosley
  (12:30 PM)

Well, I think Shanahan's really good at working with QBs. If he doesn't think Campbell's the answer, then you have to take the QB. I'd lean toward Bradford. But that's just because I've seen him play a lot more than Clausen.

Justin (Idaho)

Which of the three headed monster would the dallas cowboys most likely trade?

Mosley
  (12:30 PM)

Choice is the most tradeable -- if that's a word.

S.R (florida)

What have you heard about what Perry Fewell wants to do with the Giant Defense?

Mosley
  (12:32 PM)

Just a lot more aggressive. They'll stay in the 4-3 base, but you may see some hybrids at times. He loves speed and that's why he'll get players in positions to beat lumbering offensive tackles. His scheme will be MUCH more aggressive and unpredictable than Sheridan's. All you have to do is look at his work with the Bills.

Mark (NYC, NYC)

Any insight to the rumors that the Boys cut ties with Barber, I heard he's due a roster bonus, and some people feel he's already started to slow down and regress?

Mosley
  (12:32 PM)

Mark, they're not going to cut Barber.

Dave K. (Washington, D.C.)

if the Skins do switch to the 3-4 - how much damage will Orakpo do as the Elephant?

Mosley
  (12:33 PM)

Dave, I think Orakpo will flourish in this role. He'll try to be what Ware is for the Cowboys -- an absolute nightmare. So I think this is great for Orakpo's career. And it's not like he was struggling in the Blache system.

Philip (Dallas)

Aside from what all the Beast teams are gonna be doing, which players are YOU excited about seeing at the combine, and where do you think they will go in the draft? Thanks Mosley!

Mosley
  (12:36 PM)

I'm looking forward to Colt McCoy's throwing session -- especially when you consider how his season ended. Anxious to see how Mays and Allen look at safety. And I'm told Berry is an athletic freak, so that will be enjoyable to watch. I'll also be looking for some of the under-the-radar guys. I've always enjoyed getting to know the Donnie Avery's of the world at the combine. No one thought that much of him a couple years ago, but then he was the first WR taken in the draft. Pretty cool. I really like the combine. You'll hear other reporters grumbling about the cattle call, but I think it's an excellent opportunity to gather info for the offseason.

Matt (NJ)

Do you see sheldon brown playing safety for the eagles and us drafting a corner?

Mosley
  (12:36 PM)

Nope.

Hoss (Philly)

MM Ive been harping on the Eagles switching to a 3-4 defense for years now, with the linebackers they have would this be possible if they get some help in the draft and FA this off season?

Mosley
  (12:36 PM)

That's not going to happen.

Eric Liebeskind (New York)

I love Madison Hedgecock. Would you say he's the best fullback in the Beast?

Mosley
  (12:37 PM)

No, Leonard Weaver's the best FB in the Beast.

Craig (Philly)

Curious as to why you think the Giants might look at Rolle. They already have a FS-Phillips (coming off injury) They do need a SS

Mosley
  (12:38 PM)

In this day and age, the safeties are interchangeable. Phillips can move over and play SS. So I wouldn't get caught up in worrying about having two free safeties, Craig.

Paul (Bozeman, MT)

'Marion the Barbarian' looked much less barbarian-like this past season. How much longer do you see him being a cost-effective NFL back?

Mosley
  (12:40 PM)

I don't know if he's a "cost-effective" NFL back right now, Paul. Especially with the way that he's shown some wear and tear the past couple seasons.

Chuck (Warner Robins, Ga)

What is the prediction for the outcome of the Bears staff overhaul?

Mosley
  (12:41 PM)

I don't think the Bears will suddenly be Super Bowl contenders, but I'm VERY interested to see what Martz does with Cutler. I remember Martz putting up huge numbers with Kitna in Detroit.

tuckandcompany (CT)

Is Wade job in Dallas really safe?

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

As long as he makes the playoffs, yes.

Amari Harris (Richmond, VA)

How are the Cowboys going to address quickness at the receiver position? If Tony Romo is going to keep himself upright next year he needs someone who can get open quickly and right now the 'Boys don't have it unless you get Ogletree some more time.

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

I think Crayton and Austin got open pretty quickly on some of those quick slants, Amari.

Jonny (Queens)

How interested are the eagles in Peppers? I would think playing on a d-line with some talent and real creativity would open a whole new world for the guy. The Panthers have been the least blitzing team in the league for the guys whole career and hes played with few other pro bowlers on the dline.

Mosley
  (12:43 PM)

I think they'll investigate. But they're not going to pay the guy $12 million per year or anything.

Jarin (Carrollton, TX)

What are your thoughts of dallas taking Mt. Cody and moving Jay Ratliff outside to his natural position?

Mosley
  (12:43 PM)

I like the guy's athleticism, but his weight scares me. And I think the Cowboys have a similar thought.

Dave K. (Washington, D.C.)

Do you see Laron Landry on the Skins next year? Or is he gone in Shanny's/Allen's world?

Mosley
  (12:44 PM)

He'll be out there in 2010. They have to find a better way to take advantage of his size and athleticism. Get him closer to the line of scrimmage. Haslett will know what to do.

Andrew (New York City)

Even though Kearse disappointed, don't you think that Peppers's penchant for getting double digit sacks (despite any attitude concern) makes him a fine addition on the opposite side of Cole? The Eagles have several needs and there's a dearth of talent out there this offseason due to the CBA, so this seems like a good (even if not ideal) fit.

Mosley
  (12:45 PM)

I wouldn't pour big money into a 30-year-old pass-rusher.

Joe (DC)

Could the Skins afford not to draft a tackle in the first two rounds?

Mosley
  (12:45 PM)

I think you better address that need quickly. So yes, I think that needs to happen in the first two rounds.

Amari Harris (Richmond, VA)

Do you see the Cowboys drafting a fullback this year, like Rashawn Jackson? Couldn't hurt to add some playmaking ability at the position as well as a short yardage guy to take over for Barber.

Mosley
  (12:46 PM)

Yeah, I could see the Cowboys taking a long look at a FB in the later rounds.

Amari Harris (Richmond, VA)

Where is Martin Gramatica? He didn't look that bad before he lost the job to Folk in training camp.

Mosley
  (12:47 PM)

My 2-year-old daughter and I noticed him on the Cartoon Network on Saturday.

Jay (NC)

What happened to my question about Anthony Alridge? Are you that against him?

Mosley
  (12:49 PM)

Jay, my heartfelt apologies for not getting to your Alridge question. I liked the guy at Houston. Love his speed. But you can't look at him as anything more than a third back at this point. Jay, thanks for showing such extreme patience.

Amari Harris (Richmond, VA)

How many years does Terrance Newman have left in Dallas?

Mosley
  (12:49 PM)

He could go two or three more years, Amari. Oops, that's it for you, sir.

Eric (Bethesda, MD)

All these analysts predicting the Skins will take a QB at #4 must be crazy, right? Why would Shanahan and Co. take a tremendous risk from a guaranteeed money standpoint on a kid with a recently surgically repaired shoulder or a primadonna system QB on an awful college team? If the Skins don't go OL with #4, how do they expect any of their QBs to remain upright?

Mosley
  (12:51 PM)

The fear of signing a QB that high is only surpassed by the fear that Bradford will show up somewhere else and become the next Peyton Manning. If you decide that Bradford's a franchise quarterback, then you HAVE to think about taking him at No. 4. So no, the analysts aren't as "crazy" as you might think.

Gene (Tx)

Why is it that sometime Garrett calls a great game, mixes it up and has the offense humming, and other times I'm calling the plays they are going to run from home because he's so predictable? Does Wade need to provide some more "fatherly" influence in the game planning

Mosley
  (12:52 PM)

I don't think you want Wade Phillips anywhere close to the offensive play-calling. Actually, Garrett did a pretty nice job this season. He needs to figure out how to use Felix Jones more in '09, but he had the hang of it down the stretch. I don't have a huge problem with Garrett's play-calling, Gene.

greg (ashburn va)

Are the redskins a team to watch for the RELEASED LT to go to? and will Jason campbell get traded?

Mosley
  (12:54 PM)

Greg in Ashburn, I'm rewarding you for being No. 1 in line today. Thanks for showing up a couple hours early. The Skins might privately shop Campbell at the combine, but I don't think the trade will happen. The Rams might show some interest. And LT's looking to play for a Super Bowl contender. Even with Shanny in town, I don't think anyone views the Skins as SB contenders. Our time here grows short.

Brian (Columbia, SC)

If when Dallas is picking in the second round and Mardy Gilyard just so happens to be sitting there, please tell me its not utterly improbable that jerry pulls the trigger on him. No disrespect patrick crayton, but we lack a dynamic speedter in the slot and not to mention on punt returns. Imagine having Felix and Gilyard on the field at the same time, it would be very comparable to desean jackson and McCoy from Phili. I dont think you can pass him up if he falls. What do you think?

Mosley
  (12:55 PM)

I don't think he'll be there. But yes, you'd have to think about that. I'll try to visit with Gilyard at the combine. It will be interesting to figure out which kids the Cowboys host for interviews.

Ellis Joseph (Raleigh, NC)

How bad and how early do the Skins need to address the RB position in the draft. Is Best or McCluster a possibility in the 2nd? McKnight or Blount in the later rounds?

Mosley
  (12:57 PM)

I think Shanahan would love to figure out a way to use McCluster. Tiny little guy, but he could be pretty dangerous.

Chris (Brooklyn)

matt, any chance Rolando is around when the giants pick (perhaps if he ran a poor 40 at the COMBINE you'll be reporting from?), and if not, do you see Jerry trading up to get him if he falls into the early teens?

Mosley
  (12:59 PM)

No, Jerry Jones isn't going from No. 27 into the teens to get McClain. Good player, but not worth that type of move. I think the Cowboys will sit right there at No. 27 and see who falls to them. I think the Giants are a possibility at No. 15. OK, you guys have been great as always. We almost hit the 400-question mark. Not bad for late February. Let's talk soon. I may be taking next Tuesday off, but we'll make it up to you. Thanks for your excellent questions.
