Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Hello Sportsnation, glad to be back! We can talk trades going forward, or whatever you want."Yes, but my father was a piano mover, so..."

Jerry ((LA))

Thorp Dogg!!!! Settle an arguement between me and my buddy. Who do you take and why...TMAC in his Prime or Kobe in his Prime?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Kobe, but it's close. Great question to start it off!

Jordan (Houston)

Love the chats David! what do you think of the guards in New Orleans? Collision and Thornton, are they for real?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

I'm not sure Thornton is ever going to be a long-term starter, and I think Collison could be, but both are significant talents and yes, they are for real.

Terry (Madison)

Who is your all-time favorite player?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Magic Johnson.

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

And Dametri Hill, James Reddish, Timmy Walker, Stacey Foster, Will Wightman, Scott Brown. I could go on and on.

Hank ((MI))

I know Zac Randolph is having a great year, but he takes ALOT of tough, contested shots. Now granted they go in, but isn't that a testament to bad coaching that he doesn't really understand what a good shot is?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Or just really good playing, and confidence.

Jeremy (SLC UT)

How about the play of Kyrylo Fesenko the last two games? 17 points 12 boards 4 blocks and 3/3 FT... Great to be a Jazz fan right now especially when the knicks keep losing...

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Funny, an NBA exec just told me about how much better he is playing recently. He always had the talent.

Kristen (Los Altos, CA)

Can you explain why the league has become so much smaller compared to the 80's and 90's?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I think one issue is the need for quickness to create better numbers on each side of the floor, since zones are allowed now.

brian (washington dc)

Although I don't want the wolves to trade Rubio, the reality is that they might this summer. Just wondering what type of value he has in a draft choice. Would a team give up a top 5 pick for him in this year's draft?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Probably-he's been outstanding in Europe. Jason Kidd like and he's not 20 yet.

Nick (DC)

Whats yoru take on Andray Blatche's imrpovement since the Twan trade? Is there any difference to his overall atttitude or is it that he just plays better when hes the focal point of the offense?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

He's learning to figure out how to impact games, finally. He's enormously gifted, and competing hard.

NBA DRAFT LOVER ((NY))

Who is the best player coming out besides wall and turner?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Cousins, separate from his attitudinal issues.

Terry (Madison)

If you were the NBA commish for one day what rule(s) would you change? I would like it to be an automatic technical foul if a player yells at or does anything to an offical while the clock is running. I am so tired of a player driving to the basket missing a shot and throwing has hands up and yelling something at the refs.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

I'd get rid of all rules governing the NBA defensive 3 seconds. Just let teams play defense any way they can.

Lebron James ((OH))

Why is everyone just assuming I am the best in the league now. Is it because of the hype machine that is ESPN and NIKE. It's obvious fans dont actually watch games. Kobe is still better, maybe not in 3 or 4 years but right now he is.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

It's simply not true.

Marcus (Boston)

Thoooorpe love ur chats, only thing that gets me thru the lean hours of wednesday.... Celtics question: In your opinion is Paul (P Double) Pierce a top 10 celtic of all time??

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Better to ask a true Green fan. But probably.

Baljit Pahal (Toronto)

Tmac in his prime is a close call with kobe in his prime? You're rediculous.....

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Perhaps.

John (Dallas)

The Mavs defense has improved dramatically since Haywood has been starting. Is this a coincidence?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Not remotely. Haywood is very very good on defense.

Gordon Thomas (Cleveland)

Best Ferrell movie, Old School, Step Brothers, Semi-Pro, or other?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I'd lean to Anchorman. Or Wedding Crashers-he deserved an Oscar for Supporting Role.

brett (tempe)

Steph Curry is gonna be a star... team guy who can light it up when he needs to... and a smooth jumper... why did so many teams think he couldn't handle the point? I think he has shown great vision, and basketball IQ and is learning angles and passes... too many one hand passes but he has that natural flare for the game...

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I have no idea.

Matt ((Los Angeles))

Hey David! Hope you and your family are well. Even though LeBron may be better for the 82 game regular season grind at this point in his career, who would you rather have for Game 7 of the NBA finals: LeBron or Kobe.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Probably LeBron, today, but I understand the argument for Kobe. It does not really matter. How many Game 7 NBA Finals have we seen lately?

Sam (Atl)

How many games do you watch a week?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I watch 7-10 live each week, at minimum. Then I download about 1000 clips a week to watch for my draft blog, plus some for my rookies-maybe another 500 or so here and there. It's not as much as it sounds.

Tim (Sacramento)

Thorpegenius, Can I just say an "I'm sorry" for how my team treated you? Someone upstairs must not like you, so they quietly blamed you for "tension" between Kevin Martin and either Petrie or Westphal. What have you done, besides help coach and counsel our two most surprising draft picks in 6 years? You are the only national voice who consistently stayed updated with our team, and were positive at all times despite how bad we have been for 4 years. And Martin was always a first class act despite taking wholly unfair shots from some very ignorant people. The truth is, our players need more from men like you, not less.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Thanks. No need to apologize though. I'm a big boy. I never saw tension between Kevin and Petrie, to be honest. But it became clear last month that Paul and his staff thought Kevin wasn't any good. Daryl Morey must disagree. We'll see who is right. That's all I have to say about that, other than I loved rooting for the Kings for 6 years.

Bob (Portland, OR)

Cavs + Jamison (Z) = (?)

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Why is Jamison a "+" but you get to multiply Z's contributions?

I Hate Tweeners ((NY))

What up DT!!! I need your bball mind! What are you thoughts on tweeners? Players like jamison, arenas, ty thomas, monta ellis, etc. These players seems to get more coaches fired than anything. Can you win with tweeners?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Of course.

chris (ct)

I honestly used to enjoy your chats thorpe but no more.. I love how every ESPN homer picks Lebron over Kobe.. Where are you knuckleheads been over the past 13 years???

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

It's not just us Chris. I saw last week or so a columnist for the LA Times wrote the same thing. Get over it.

Desipleez (Philly)

Hey Thorpedo! My roommate is convinced that Lebron only gets his points because he barrels through to the rim. He says he needs to develop a post-game. My question is why should a player like Lebron develop a post-game now when he can still rely on quickness? Jordan and Kobe didn't develop that until later in their careers.

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

it would be nice to be able to add another weapon to his arsenal, but it's not something he HAS to do yet. You are right. And he does not just barrel guys, although he does do that too. He explodes to the rim.

Matt (PA)

David, thanks for the chat. What's Jrue Holliday's upside? Dare i hope for Gary Payton?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

I'm not sure he gets that good, but I think he's a starting pg for 12+ years. He'll outlast most guys in this class.

Alex (Littleton, CO)

Hey Coach Thorpe, thanks for the add on FB. What the word on the Nuggets adding another big? Can they get past the West's Best if they stay pat?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

My pleasure. For those of you who send me questions on Facebook, I tend to answer them in bunches when I get a day off on Friday or Saturday. Denver wanted a few different guys but could not offer enough, not sure what they'll do now.

Ryan (Minneapolis)

Why is Kevin Love not starting? Isn't he the best player on the Wolves?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Probably, but Kurt wants more balance in his two units.

Dan (Mystic River)

Hey Thorpe! The reports of Ray Allen's demise seem to be premature. He's been lighting it up since the trade deadline passed!

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

With older players, it's not that their game dries up totally, more like a wave that comes and goes.

Justin (NJ)

Any reason Russell Westbrook doesn't average 20-8-8 for his career?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

No. Maybe 17, not 20.

Big A (WiscoSportsTalk)

David, my man Bogut is getting a love lately in the national media. If the Bucks make the playoffs this year and he carries this play over (if he's healthy) and is an all-star (which its an atrocity that David Lee was taken over him, look at last games box) when do you start shedding the so callled "Bust" of a number one pick

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

It's already shed.

Jeff (Chicago, IL)

Hi David, why do people continue to ignore Andrew Bogut as a premier defender, while he leads the league in charges taken, is 2nd in blocks, and 10th in rebounding?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

He's not ignored!!

Matt (Columbus)

Jamison seems to be playing better on offense, but how long till the Cavs right-the-ship defensively?!

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

I'd think so. They will study film and create smart strategies.

Geevis (CT)

Thorpedo, Who in your opinion has the best top to bottom team capable of winning the championship this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Lakers and Cavs, with the Magic having a chance if Carter can find 3 pt range.

Wes (Raleigh)

Thorpedus Maximus, do you think a team can win a title if Kevin Martin is their #1 scoring option?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Yes, but only in a system that takes advantage of his talents. He won't be Houston's best player, but he probably leads them in scoring next year. Or maybe the Kings were right and he ends up coming off the bench as an average player.

Ben (Phx)

Thorpe! My son tells me your company stinks...oh god. What do you think of the development of Goran Dragic and Robin Lopez from year 1 to year 2? Is it typical for players that looked so lost as rookies to improve this much in their second year?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

It's not surprising, no. I was surprised with Dragic this summer, he's a jet.

mike (springfield, ma)

Do you think Curry's numbers are just a product of the system Nellie runs?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

I do not. He's terrific and has a ROY chance.

Tim (Katy, TX)

You can't honestly think '02-'05 T-mac was close to Kobe. Are you serious?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Can someone tell me how their PER's rate when they were playing their best? And T-Mac spent much of his best time on weak or average franchises.

Ray A. (San Francisco, CA)

David, couldn't the Warriors compete next year? The Warriors already have a young core of Randolph-Wright-Curry-Ellis, and will probably add Evan Turner, DeMarcus Cousins or Wes Johnson. Heck if their lucky enough maybe even John Wall!

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Until they come up with a better vision, and start executing it from the top down, I struggle to see good things. I do know this, Curry and Randolph are amazing pieces to build on.

Shuhan (Chicago)

Thorpe, in your training, what % of time and effort goes towards things like maturation (mind training), and what % goes to physical training?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

It's an even combination. I do one with the other. But confidence is the ultimate weapon, if it's built on genuine results in practice.

Ben (NYC)

care to re-rank steph curry in your fresh-soph rankings? why was he so low? 35-10-10 club is elite.

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Those rankings were basically what I thought the league valued those guys to be. Plus, those dudes in front of him are nice!

LJ (LA)

Thorpe, I just love your chats and your family attitude - have mad respect for a man not afraid to honor his family the way you do - but I have to agree with the poster above. TMAC close to Kobe in his prime? That's just flatly ridiculous. Kobe is on another stratosphere than TMac has ever reached.

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Thanks-I have no problem taking criticism. Thanks for not making it personal. Ask yourself this question-if TMac was in LA with Shaq and Phil, could the Lakers have win 3 titles?

Noah R. (Miami Fl)

been 3 days since someones answered a heat question =( Please give us some hope... where do u see wade next year

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

In Dade County. Ooops, Wade County.

Clay (Athens)

Thorpedo, do you think a bigger version of Rajon Rondo is a good comparison for Russell Westbrook...?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Kind of, yes. Westbrook is a special guy, just like Rondo, but they are pretty unique.

Jordan (Houston)

with all his assets and first round picks to work with, How Dangerous is Darrel Morey in this off season? what do you think he will do?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

I think they are a dark horse to add a special player.

bubble boy ((a liquor store))

bubble boy here--how good a fit would evan turner of ohio state be on the jazz? he is the exact kind of player the jazz have always needed. is turner a lock to go #2?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Turner seems to be a top 3 lock right now, and he could fit in anywhere.

JD (NY)

David, if you had to work on 1 thing with Yi Jianlian, what would it be? Does he have the tools to be successful in the NBA, or do you think he'll never be able to put it all together? Thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

1. Playing athletically2. Shooting from the balls of his sneakers, not the heels.3. Shot selection4. Being a stronger presence in transition.Yes I do.

Joe (Alaska)

After this season with all the superstar becoming free agents do you think there any chance a big name will come to LA and join the laker for the run at the 3 peet

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Doubtful.

Patrick (Cleveland)

Went to the Cavs vs. Hornets game last night. I told my buddies to watch out for Collison but where did Thorton come from? Their backcourt was just crushing us.

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Thornton will have a lot of games like that over his career. Collison is just plain terrific.

rolland (pompano beach)

Pick your point guard to build around: Westbrook, Rose, Rondo, Curry, Wall?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

I'd give the slightest of edges to...Westbrook. I like his potential as a defender and his willingness to be a factor in every part of the game.

Jason (Orlando)

Thope I know you like shorter questions but can you please discuss this.....How does LeBron James only have 3 technical fouls this season?? The way he cries and complains after every whistle is a disgrace to the game itself. He consistently shows up the officials on a nightly basis yet he's only been whistled for 3 tech's??? He even came off the bench yesterday ( on a blocking call against Jamison) and almost made it to the paint while protesting the call made on the floor. The league needs to put an end to this before it gets worse. What is sad is that he doesnt even realize that he already gets most of the favorable calls to begin with and yet he still shows up the officials. If you doubt that then how is it that one of the most physical players in the league has only been whistled for 33 fouls in his last 23 games??

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

I watched him closely in Orlando. He's really, really, really smart. Does not cuss (much), talks more than screams, and works the refs all game, not just after bad calls.

max (Chicago)

Kobe hit some great shots at the end of last night's game. with your team down single digits in the last 6 minutes of the game, which player do you most want to have to take over?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Alright, I've had about enough of this line of questioning.

Needle Nose Ned Ryerson (Punxsutawney)

Watch that first step, it's a DOOZY!

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Yes!!

Eugene (LA)

TMac had a PER over 31.01 in his 02-03 season. Kobe had 28.11 in his 05-06 season. I believe only three people have ever had a PER over 30. Jordan, LBJ, and Tmac.

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Good to know. As I said, put him in his formative years in LA, and I think the Lakers get those 3 titles. Instead he played for a coach who said he'd never be an NBA player.

Ben (NYC)

Tell me Steph Curry has not been putting on a show...without monta he's been better than tyreke don't you think?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I think he may be playing slightly better than Tyreke over the past 6 weeks, but nowhere close over the whole season.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will be the perfect head coach for the New Jersey Nets?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Depends on who they sign. If they stay young, I like picking a young coach that can grow with them. Dave Joerger, an assistant in Memphis, would be great.

Brendan (St. Louis)

Love the Groundhog Day quote. Assuming he goes to Minnesota, how do you think Evan Turner fits with Corey Brewer on the wings?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Perfectly. Brewer needs to move to the 3 anyway.

Terry (Madison)

With Collison playing so well, do they trade either him or Paul. You can't really play them together. Do they trade Collison while his value is high rather than have him backup Paul, trade Paul, or do nothing and keep both?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

I think they have to trade him this summer.

rolland (pompano beach)

Who is the best young player in the game today that you would pick to build around?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Durantula.

Pristo (NYC)

Would Griffin have been the Rookie of the Year if healthy?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Impossible to guess. Evans has been fantastic.

fabian (germany)

plz explain to me why andris biedrins cant shoot the basketball AT ALL. what do they do in practise??

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

I have no idea. But ultimately it's on him, not them.

C (Charlotte)

You said a couple of weeks ago that Tyrus Thomas could thrive under Larry Brown. What are your thoughts on his first few games?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

It's nice to be right once in a while. I think we will see him become the best he can be. I'm so happy for him.

Chris Isola (NJ)

Hey, it seems like you are just hating on Kobe, and giving all the accolades to Lebron James and he hasnt won anything.

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

I think Jerry Rice was a better player than Emmitt Smith. Does that mean I hate Smith, my all-time favorite player?

John (Raleigh)

What's closer to this Kings team true nature: The (comparatively) hot start at the beginning of the season, or this seemingly endless slide?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

They rallied around as a team when Martin went down after 5 games (where he was averaging 30ppg and had a PER over 25) and outscrapped everyone, against a bottom 5 schedule. Since that good run, they are 4 and 23. I think they are 6 and 17 in games without Martin once the schedule picked up.

Darryl (oakland, CA)

Do forsee Leon Powe having an impact at all with the Cavs when he returns?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Yes I do. He'll get them into the penalty faster, so making free throws is a huge for them.

Ernie (The Rockies)

But you just said your favorite player was Magic.

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

C'mon Ernie.

Sammy (Los Angeles)

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I'm a huge Westbrook fan, but how does his upside differ from where Rondo is now?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

I think he has an attitude that wears on teammates better, that's all. I love RR, a lot. He's a genius in track shoes.

Jordan (PHX)

Hi David,I haven't heard anyone mention Kevin Love for the 6th Man Award, but if he continues coming off the bench and surpasses the 50% plateau doesn't he beat out Crawford and Landry (now starting in Sacto) for the award? K-Love has come off the bench in 18 of 38 games, and is boasting a gaudy 22.73 PER.

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Love for 6th man. Brewer for MIP ( he just set the Wolves record with a made 3 in 22 straight games). But neither will happen unless they keep winning.

Joe (Monterey Park)

More important for a shooter -- form or result? Would you fix a good shooter's form to try and make him better or leave it alone for fear or harming it?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

If Tiger Woods and every golfer is constantly trying to tweak his swing, why shouldn't NBA shooters? Small, slight adjustments are fine, if necessary.

jim (CLE)

are you aware that Lebrons PER is best ever right now?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Indeed.

Mo Cheeks (Chicago)

Do you really believe that John Wall's athleticism is greater that D. Rose's. If so, can you please explain?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

I don't think I ever wrote that. Rose is enormously athletic.

LJ (LA)

So now it's the fault of T-Mac's coaches that he never cared enough to cultivate his talents and lacks heart and toughness? Seriously? David, as a father, you cannot seriously be advocating that it's everyone ELSE's fault for a what grown man does or doesn't do. Kobe didn't need coaches to give him a work ethic, and it wasn't Phil in LA that cultivated it, either. T-Mac's issues have always been about laziness and lack of heart ... and that's not on anyone else, my friend.

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

As a dad, I can tell you that to expect my children to figure life out on their own is absurd. I'm not suggesting that T-Mac is not at fault for his faults, but I am saying that in better programs, he'd have become a better player. And he was incredible as is.

Einstein (The Ground)

It seems only a Moron would pick a player who has no June Pedigree over a veteran with 4 rings? Sorry, do I have to Kiss your butt to get posted? Love your chats buddy.

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

I thought I picked Kobe, didn't I?

slim (Memphis)

I hear around town that Thabeet was owners pick, not GMs.two parter, how much will that #2 pick haunt the Grizz, and when will owners learn to stay out!!??

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Let's just think-trade down and get Curry to play with Mayo. Nice.

Mike (San Diego)

Is the MVP race already over or does the Durantula have a puncher's chance to snag it away? This is assuming something like OKC winning their division and KD winning the socring title happens.

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Nothing is over, yet.

Darryl (oakland, CA)

Do you believe Darko is a talented player?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Yes, and I think he's in a great spot.

David Thorpe
  (1:01 PM)

Time's up. Thanks for all the questions. Please have a great rest of the week and a safe and happy weekend.
