Good Wednesday ladies, gentlemen. Good to be back for another SportsNation chat here at espn.com. A lot to digest from UFC 110, Frank Mir's comments on Brock Lesnar, and so very much more. Hard out at 2PM ET today, so let's go.
ANIK - whats happening? When do you suppose the good folk in NM are going to show/tell/whatever Jardine to keep his right hand up?
Hahaha. Rashad Evans is back from Australia and en route to Bristol as we speak. I will ask him tomorrow on MMA Live.
Since Brock is a wrestler do you think that he puts on more weight after the weigh in's
Brock usually enters the Octagon at around 278-280. So yes, he puts on about 15 lbs. after weighing in.
Huge weekend for George Sotropoulos, what do you see the the UFC doing with him? I think Maynard is a huge possibility.
I definitely think a fight with Maynard is a possibility. Other than Cain Velasquez, I thought Sotiropoulos was the night's biggest winner. I really want to see him again, and I think he could be in the title picture by the end of 2010.
Hey Jon when is mma live coming to cable television?
Hopefully soon my man.
Buy/Sell Cain Valasquez vs Junior Dos Santos
It's certainly a fight the fans would be salivating over. Just not sure the UFC is in any great rush to eliminate an obvious contender by having those two fight in what would be an eliminator. But we'll see.
After such an impressive victory why isn't Cain given the first crack at Lesnar instead of giving Mir (if he wins) his third shot after a horrible performance?
Chad, we still don't know exactly how the UFC will proceed. The Mir-Carwin fight is for the interim heavyweight title, I believe. But injuries or other circumstances could clear the way for Velasquez. The bottom line is that Cain did all he could with the main-event showcase Saturday night, and his opportunity is coming.
Jon, sorry I haven't been around too much lately. Is the end in sight for Joe "Daddy" if this is the best he could do?
Perhaps Stevenson overlooked Sotiropoulos a little bit. A lot of us thought Joe Daddy was back after the impressive performance against Spencer Fisher, but perhaps age is catching up with him. He's been fighting forever, and I'm not sure he will ever contend again.
C'mon, how have we made it 5 minutes and no talk of how Frank Mir now makes Lesnar look like an angel. Mir what a great role model!
We will hit this hard tomorrow on MMA Live. I know a lot of people were quick to judge Frank Mir before actually listening to the audio. I would encourage people to seek out the audio before having an opinion. Obviously, Mir's word choice was awful and it was a regrettable moment. But he's not a murderer, nor does he really want to kill Brock Lesnar. His mentality, which is a little crazy, really helps him in the cage. A huge part of it is just hype, b/c a third fight with Lesnar brings a massive pay day.
Hey Jon, just wanted to say GREAT CALL on the Cain/Nog fight I was hoping your were going to be right. what do you think will be next for big nog?
I appreciate that Angelo. I'm wondering where all of the chatters who told me I was insane for picking the first-round TKO are today? Nogueira could face the loser of Gonzaga-Dos Santos. All of the wars have finally caught up to Nog.
Yo Jon, sup bro? Good work picking Cain, props man
Thanks dude. I just thought the media and fans made way too much of Nog's win over a 46-year-old Randy Couture and not enough of his loss to Frank Mir at UFC 92. The staph infection didn't help, but there were many other reasons why Nogueira was knocked out by Mir.
Mir is stupid just by saying anything negative about a guy who beat the living heck out of him.
I would agree that Lesnar is not a guy I would be looking to give any added motivation. But he's created a lot of headlines and intrigue for a trilogy fight. Frank Mir has been a great ambassador for MMA, and the sport has come for. But comments like these can really be a setback.
yo jon! long time. who's next for bisping? nate the great maybe?
Hey Suave. I don't like the Marquardt match-up for Bisping at all. But it's a pretty good suggestion and feasible.
I never said you were insane, I just thought Nog would do better. Good call.
No worries. I'm not one of those 'I told ya so' guys. I respect all of the opinions from fans and media alike. I just call 'em like I see 'em, and thankfully this time, when I took a major stand, it came through.
So - buy/sell Karl amoussou as a live dog this friday? Can't wait for that fight -
With all due respect my man, this Strikeforce Challengers card does very little for me. Rooting for Phil Baldacci though...
I know Cain and George are getting a lot of props, and rightfully so, but how about Ryan Bader? Kind of guy a little bit of Chuck Liddell to him.
Ryan Bader is growing on me. I know some have criticized his performance, and his strategy might've been a bit too deliberate early. But he needed to finish Jardine, and did so. Very curious to see who Joe Silva lines up next for Bader.
Hey Jon, so is Fedor gonna fight Werdum in April on CBS or what? Now I am rumors this fight isn't gonna happen. WTF is going on with Strikeforce?
I do expect that to be the fight in April. Not sure if it will be on CBS or Showtime. But Fedor's next opponent will be Werdum. Would be shocked if it was anyone else at this point.
rampage looked fat at UFC 110. what weight is walking around at right now? he better get his butt in shape or he will be in trouble Rashad. if in shape, and stops smoking, he should destroy Evans.
I wouldn't make too much of Rampage's appearance in Australia. Jackson may not be long for MMA at this point, but you can be sure he will whip himself into shape for the Evans fight. He really wants to send a message to Rashad, and I have full expectations that he will be ready.
Dana said that Bonnar will always have a place in the UFC...I've got mad respect for that
It's awesome. His toughness is to be admired. Not every fighter is willing to throw caution to the wind and get cracked in order to land/put on an exciting fight. His fights routinely deliver, and it's nice that the UFC is standing behind a guy that has been integral to its success. Bonnar will also be appealing the decision, and a rematch appears likely.
Also thought it was cool that Bonnar e-mailed me from Australia to let me know he was watching MMA Live on ESPN PacRim. Pretty cool.
Henderson made a huge mistake going to SF. Their ticket sales, merchandise sales and ratings are a joke. He would be fighting Spider Silva in Abu Dhabi if he was still in the UFC.
No argument here.
Bonner isnt that great, dont find his fights entertaining.
Admittedly, I still haven't seen the Coleman fight b/c we were doing our MMA Live Preview Special live at UFC 100. But I disagree with you. He is never afraid to get knocked out, and I think he delivers more consistently than most, even if he hasn't won much of late.
Ryan Bader vs. Matt Hamill
I like that.
Bonnar and Jardine should both be cut. UFC has a double standard on who they keep and cut. Bonnar especially, after getting caught for roiding.
I respect your opinion, but I disagree.
Now that the Bellator FW draw is out who do you like Jon?Any chance Bellator makes there way up to Michigan?
Not sure on Bellator to Michigan. I like Pitbull to emerge from a stacked field and get the title shot against Joe Soto.
With Joe looking unprepared and Jardine suffering a familiar fate, is the shine coming off the "genius" Greg Jackson. Throw in Nate's pathetic display, Guida getting owned by Kenny and Rashad's lack of killer instinct vs Sliva and its hard to argue in Jackson's favour.
2009 was a huge year for Greg Jackson fighters, but you're right there have been some setbacks of late. I still think he is among the best in the business. But a trainer can't fight, and a lot of other camps are right there.
When is Rich Franklin going to get a solid fight at 205? These catchweight fights do nothing for him.
I agree, and so does Rich. He's been a company guy long enough and deserves to get on some sort of legitmate path to a title. I think fighting Randy Couture at UFC 115 in Vancouver is a step in the right direction.
Any plans for MMALive to air on ESPN/ESPN2?
Hopefully something happens soon, Grant. As humbly as I can say this, I think we are ready!
Why is the chat not auto updating?
Not sure what is going on. I'm just posting and answering. Are others having issues?
JK, I enjoy your chat every week; I normally just view, but today I'm getting in on it... Did the UFC release the fighter?s payouts yet? I wonder what Cain made for those enjoyable 90 seconds.
Thanks, Scott. Good to have you in the chat. Fighter salaries haven't been released yet, I don't believe. Google search may help you.
Do you have any UFC Topps cards?
Any word on Gegard Mousasi to the UFC?
He still has several fights left on his Strikeforce deal.
Is Daley vs Koscheck a clear #1 contender match? After Daley wins by first round KO will UFC give him his deserved shot at GSP?
I wouldn't call it a clear No. 1 contender's match. But perhaps Dana White will declare it as such the week before the fight, as he did with Marquardt-Sonnen. If you like Paul Daley, get on it now. He opened as a pretty big underdog.
Im glad SOMEONE came out and said it finally, people made too much of the Coture win...also Frank Mir wins that same match if Nog hadnt had staph....I know its draining but still Mir's hands were great..
I agree. Mir beats Nogueira at UFC 92, staph infection or not.
Yah, Jon. I'm getting the same issue. I'm having to reload manually each time I wanna see new questions. That, and I have a question about Junie Browning's next fight you haven't answered yet......
I will alert the powers that be. But if I don't answer your question, don't be alarmed. Every time I answer one question, about 25 more pop into the queue. It's a good problem to have! Send any questions that don't get answered to firstname.lastname@example.org, or try me on Twitter (Jon_Anik). I will get back to you.
Jon, lets say Hendo had resigned with the UFC. We were probably looking at a Marquardt-Hendo matchup at 109 instead of Nate-Chael correct? So technically Hendo would have had to beat Nate and not have gotten to busted up to get his rematch with Silva at 112.
Regardless of how any one of us forecasts what might've happened, there are far more big fights for him right now in the UFC.
Hey Jon...With all the talk Mir is doing regarding Brock, do you think it's downplaying his fight with Carwin at all from a marketing aspect and do you think he may be taking Shane a little light?
Mir is not taking Carwin lightly. He repeatedly brought the conversation back to Shane and will be well-prepared for UFC 111. Mir just recognizes the cash windfall that would result from a third fight with Lesnar. So he will continue to hammer that angle and add fuel to an already great rivalry.
If GSP takes time off to wrestle in the Summer Olympics, he has to have his belt stripped from him correct? If that happens would we see Dana break and finally give UFC fans a tournament?
You're not going to get a tournament, Marcus. Or at least the UFC won't formalize it that way. Who knows how they would proceed if GSP makes a run at the Olympics? But I'd imagine you're right, he would vacate the title, or be forced to.
I have to refresh too. Been the same for the last month or so of chats from you. Always auto-updated before then though. Maybe you can check into it......
Yo Jonny, kudos on the Cain pick. Really stuck it to the rest of us on that one. Seemed like he was workin that same combo and Nog never caught on. Can you see Mir not making the adjustment?
I was just surprised at those who said Velasquez had no power. All he does is knock people out. I think this performance was exactly what he needed. Not sure what you are talking about with Mir adjustment?
Jon I usually don't buy UFC ppvs, but is UFC 111 a must buy?
Definitely a must-buy. The UFC has stacked the deck for New Jersey and I expect them to do the same in Boston. As you know, they don't get to the East coast as often as they would like. So when they come, you gotta blow it out. Buy 111.
Any reason to be excited about the Strikeforce Challengers card this weekend??
As respectfully as I can say it, nope. I'm sure the hardcores hate that stance. But it's lackluster. Period.
Jon, how about Lesnar vs the Mir-Carwin winner, and Cain vs the Mir-Carwin loser on the same card this summer? Is that far-fetched? Winners meet up in the winter of 2010!
I think that is a possibility, although the UFC traditionally pits guys who have won the last time out against other guys who are coming in off of victories. And losers against losers, etc. Not always, but as much as possible.
so gun to your head and both Brock and Cain right infront of you, who do you pick as the winner (or do you just have somneone pull the trigger since its less painful)?
Yeah, I think I would just die. Seriously, it's hard to answer b/c we don't know how Lesnar will come back from that vicious disease. But if Brock is healthy and, in theory, healthier than ever before, I'm backing him.
Hey Jon! Love reading the chats. Any good reason why Strikeforce hasn't pulled the rug from underneath Overeem yet (pun intended)? Is it not better to have Fedor as your champion even if he doesn't speak English?
I have no idea, Gary. I already consider Fedor to be the Strikeforce HW champion. Overeem hasn't defended the belt since 2007 I believe. Mockery of a travesty of a debacle.
I really hope Carwin shuts up Mir but the guy is way too nice for a fighter. Too vanilla for my liking. way too many cliches in his comments. thoughts?
I don't think Carwin is quite as vanilla as you think. But in the quote column, it's tough to compete with Mir and Lesnar.
ANIK!! U are the man, Do you think Bones Jones could challenge for the belt right now if UFC were to allow it?
Absolutely, Sam. I think Jon Jones could be the next UFC LHW champion, after Lyoto Machida. But unlike some fans, I have no issue with the way the UFC is proceeding with Jon Jones. He's on the cusp of being a contender right now, and a win over Brandon Vera would put him 1-2 wins away from a title shot.
Any word on Todd Duffee fighting again anytime soon?
Mike Russow at UFC 114, May 29th in Las Vegas.
Frank Mir is raw and honest. If you don't like it - don't root for him. But enough already w/ the bashing a 2 time UFC Champ and future HOF-er!
I find his honesty refreshing as well. And Mir knows he went too far in this instance. Mir is as passionate about MMA as any fighter I've ever come across, and he doesn't want to cast any negative light on his sport.
Koscheck has really grown on me. I used to hate him for his big mouth but now I actually cheer for him as the guy is fearless. he will fight anyone, anywhere on zero notice. I love the heat between him and Daley. Their smack talk has been epic so far.
Right there with you Jerry. There are too few UFC fighters with that fearless mentality.
What do you think about "Pretty" Wandy v. Sexy-ama?
I think it should happen.
I saw Henderson and Shields are meeting in April. I don't see Shields taking Hendo down, so this should end in a Hendo KO or decision...right?
Everyone and their mothers and grandmothers is picking Hendo in the fight. Shields is not a natural middleweight, so I tend to side with the masses. But Shields is a tremendous mixed martial artist and is good at proving people wrong. Don't love the matchup for him, but bigger upsets have assuredly happened.
No love for Wandy??? He looked really improved. What's next for the Axe Murderer?
Really happy to see Wanderlei perform like that. Especially after he lost the first round convincingly. He won't ever challenge for the title, but he proved he can make the cut to 185. And he's still relevant. On a night when most of the young guys had their way with older opponents, Silva was an exception.
and by the way, good work...the chat is automatically refreshing again!
Thank the Buzzmaster!
Mir is a buffoon. Wishing a death inside the Octagon would likely make him and any fighter wanting to compete in North America unemployed. So, so stupid.
Have you heard the audio yet, Newt? Contextually, it didn't sound nearly as bad as it looks in print. He was really just explaining his mentality as a fighter and took it entirely too far. He very much regrets taking it that far, but I think some are taking his comments way too literally.
Hey Jon, appreciate the effort you put in on a daily basis. I'm just wondering what the general perception of GSP is in MMA. Is he seen as a fearless fighter? I know he's respected, but do people see him as more than an athlete?
I appreciate that, Dave. I think the general perception of GSP is that he is one of the greatest of all time. Not sure 'fearless' is the best adjective to describe him. But Georges takes his career and his legacy very seriously. He wants to supplant Matt Hughes as the greatest welterweight of all time. That is first on his priority list.
What's on tap for MMA Live tomorrow?
Rashad Evans is back in studio. Florian's training camp is underway, so he's not back in Bristol until April. We will also be joined by Chael Sonnen. Who better to analyze Mir's comments than a guy who knows a think or two about trash talk?
Was Wandy's chin-blood the spot where his new face connects to his original face?
What do you think of the Neer vs Alverez fight?
I think it's exactly what Bellator is trying to accomplish---keep its champions busy against legitimate names/opponents. I really hope Alvarez wins and does so convincingly. A loss would really put Bellator in a tricky spot.
Hi, Jon. Thanks for being my #1 promoter on ESPN. After I'm done mopping the floor with my next Bellator opponent, when will be the right time for me to bring my WMD's to the UFC?
Shango! Oh wait, I think you changed your nickname. In any event, I am your biggest fan and can't wait for the day when you get your due as a top 5-7 middleweight in the world. Not sure that recognition will come until you fight for the UFC. But Bellator's Season 2 middleweight tournament will absolutely produce a legit contender.
GSP is gawd.
Any chance ESPN sends the MMA Live crew out to Sacramento for the big PPV? The card is shaping up to be absolutely ridiculous.
I don't think so, T. I do hope at some point we get to hit a WEC show. I've actually never been to one. Was hoping to get to Columbus to support Miguel Torres, but he's not texting me back.
Hi Jon, is a Conseco Walker fight on the Strikeforce cards any time soon? Jose seems mad about the "sitting on the couch eating popcorn" statement!
I think the fight might happen, and I hope Herschel lands a combination that has Canseco twitching on the canvas.
Jon, you think MMA Live will be cool enough to have a Howard Stern prank call too.
Hahaha. Maybe someone will be posing as Chael Sonnen tomorrow? But I know exactly what that guy sounds like, and so do our producers!
What kind of chance do you give Shane Carwin against Frank Mir? I follow all you r chats and watch MMA Live and haven't heard you say 1 positive thing about Carwin or give him any chance at all againt Mir.
There is a huge difference in experience between the two, as well as the quality of opposition faced. I like Carwin's power. I like his toughness, which was on full display when he rallied from a broken nose to beat Gabe Gonzaga. I just wish Carwin's MMA career began 10 years earlier. I give him about a 30-40 percent chance to beat Frank Mir.
Is it just me or should Mir should be more worried about getting blasted by Carwin than what he is going to do to Brock?
Trust me, Joseph. Mir is a cerebral guy. He is training his a** off and is not looking past Shane Carwin. He continues to talk up the Lesnar angle for obvious reasons. Money. And money.
Assuming BJ and KenFlo both win, is this Penn's last lightweight fight?
I think so, Matt. Now, if Gomi were to somehow get through Florian (and Penn through Edgar), I think the UFC would have B.J. stick around to fight Gomi. But all indications are that a Penn bump to welterweight is imminent.
How do you see the Gonzaga vs Dos Santos fight unfolding?
I see Dos Santos winning by TKO in the first round.
Cheik Kongo vs Junior Dos Santos? Finally Kongo gets a guy who will stand and bang with him. Don't you think that would be a great matchup?
I do think that's an intriguing fight. Kongo just continues to disappoint though. He looks like he should beat everybody and doesn't.
if Torres wins in columbus will he get a title shot after?
I think so. If anyone had a case for an immediate rematch to get their title back, it was Torres. But he didn't force the issue.
Jon's Man Crushes: KenFlo, Mir, Brady -- all of which are worth it!
If you know me at all, Jason, you would know I don't like Tom Brady. I am a Patriots fan who loves Peyton Manning. Belichick = man crush. I would take a bullet for that guy. And my mother wouldn't complain.
Kenflo has no chance, maybe 20% at most, against BJ as long as Marv Marovich is training him. if in shape, there is no LW on the planet that can touch BJ freakin PENN!
An in-shape B.J. Penn is a huge handful for anyone at 155. Kenny would need to put together a perfect fight.
It's kinda hard to know you well since you won't follow me on Twitter: I_am_cocky
Will extend the follow later today...
Jon, Who is your favorite prospect in the up-n-coming branches?
I've been on the Tyron Woodley bandwagon for awhile. But Phil Davis really turned heads earlier this month.
How far away is 'Bones' from a title shot?
2-3 wins at most.
Hi Jon, all this Cain talk reminds me of the Gonzaga talk from two years ago. I know Cain is flavor of the year, but he needs to beat a #1 contender before we know if he's for real or not.
Fair enough. The Nogueira win is nice, but if you're of the belief that Nog is on the way down, your stance makes sense. All I will say is that you can't beat a legend until you face one. Mission accomplished there. And you can't beat a contender or champion...until you face one. Cain has basically knocked out everyone the UFC has put in front of him.
Bader against Hammill is not a good fight. Not until Matt learns to hold his hands up and not block punches with his face.
Hahahahaha. I just think it's appropriate, based upon where both guys are right now.
jon you always say that the ufc wont have a tourny but why? do you an explination or some inside info? it just seems that it would make great sense in some of the divisions
I have always pined for more No. 1 contender's bouts and title eliminators. But there are just too many factors with a tournament, most notably injuries. Bellator has found success with the tournament-style, and it essentially removes matchmaking from the process. But the UFC likes to reward guys for not just winning, but doing so with style points. Like it or not, oftentimes they make decisions based upon PPVs and not pure sport.
It is not funny to talk about dying in the ring.
I agree. It was a forgettable few seconds for Mir, but I think he just got amped up in the moment.
Buy or Sell? Vince Wilfork as UFC HW champion in 2014, you know he's a monster.
Hahahaha. Sell. No way that dude can cut to 265.
Hi Jon, do you really, honestly, think KFlo will ever be a champ? I think he'll always be a good but not great fighter. That said, he and Diego really need to get it on while they are still in their prime.
Yes I do. If B.J. Penn moves up to 170, Kenny is the favorite to become the new champion. And I'm not the only one who says that. Perhaps I'm not the most objective guy when it comes to Florian, but he beats/finishes everyone other than Penn.
Jon, I heard the Mir interview and I don't agree with your take at all. He was not speaking in general terms about how his mentality. It was specifically in reference to Brock. If I remember correctly, his answer was in response to being asked if he hated Brock. I like Mir, but I think you are letting him off way too easy.
I respect your opinion. But no, the response was actually to a question about why his fanbase is so big. Mir said it's because he speaks his mind, and tells it like it is. When other fighters are asked who they want to fight next, they say 'whoever the UFC puts in front of me'. Mir says, I want Lesnar. I want to break his neck, etc. I know Frank Mir very well, and he truly regrets all the negative attention this is getting. He took hyping a fight too far.
People need to stop being so sensitive about Mir. So he SAID something and already apologized for it. Get over it.
Its not funny but why say it about a guy who would have killed you in the ring twice if there was no referee. Mir was about to be finished if it wasnt for the "punch to the back of the head"
You say it to hype a fight. It's a pro-wrestling-type angle.
What about Stephen Neal in mma. Hes a free agent rumors he may retire if he doesnt get any offer
I'd like to see it. Just hasn't wrestled in years, and I doubt he's ever done any sort of striking.
KenFlo is the San Antonio Spurs of the UFC Lightweight division. Waiting for Jordan to retire to win a title... I mean BJ to move on.
No way DJ! Within the context of the entire conversation, I believe he was referring to the mentality he has to have when entering the cage against a guy like Brock. Out of context, his remarks were in poor taste, (the part about ?hoping?) and come off as exaggerated hyperbole to say the least. Either way, with 16+ years with only one death in a sanctioned MMA competition (and zero in the UFC), these remarks will not hinder the growth of MMA or its fans. Just my two cents... I'll turn my radio down, hang up and listen.
A ton of opinions trickling in on Mir, but if I want to keep my job as host of MMA Live, I gotta go. Plenty more Mir-Lesnar talk tomorrow on MMA Live. Feel free to send your opinions/questions to me on Twitter (Jon_Anik) and I'll get back to you. Rashad Evans and Chael Sonnen on MMA Live tomorrow. Until then, be well. And don't text and drive. -JA
