Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Hello folks,What's on your mind with Vegas up next.

Mark Phelps (Alexandria, VA)

Just a few years ago, it appeared DEI was dying, but the merger with Ganassi has ead to a turnaround, but as a two car team. How do you see DEI faring this season points wise. Also, Martin Truex must have cringed seeing his former car win the Daytona 500.

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

First, there is no DEI, as I'm sure you know. It's EGR. But I believe the organization will fare well this season. JPM is a legitimate title contender and Jamie could finish in thw top 15.

bill ((alabama))

hey terry! when do you think danica patrick will win her first nascar title

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

That will be 2000 and Never. But that's not to say she can't eventually be competitive.

Lucas (Newport News)

Has HMS fixed the axle issue, or are they still worried about them this weekend.

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

They have concerns, but I'd be shocked if they had another axle issue this weekend.

craig (ark.)

is there going to be a problem between Lagono and Biffle??

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

I doubt it. Just a one-race deal. But I like that young Joey is showing some fire and standing up for himself.

Todd (Dayton)

With Jr.'s not so good finish this weekend, whats your view for him on the rest of the season?

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

Really too early to tell. They had mechanical issues at Cali, but he wasn't running well before that. He needs to show something this weekend at Vegas.

Booker T. (wash)

i'm not saying danica cant win.. she just will not win a race in any of the Nascar series. Book It!

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

I don't think anyone is expecting her to win titles.

Charles M (Mt Sterling Ky)

Do you see a Mark Martin turn around for Jeff Gordon.and if Gordon dont make it to the chase this year is Latarte gone.

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

Gordon will make the Chase. As for a Martin turnaround, Gordon finished third last year. He doesn't need a turnaround. He just needs to find a way to beat JJ for the title. So does Martin.

Roger (st paul)

was Lagano looking like he was about to cry after the Nationwide race? There's no crying in Nascar!

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

Actually Roger we've already seen there is crying in NASCAR, like Jamie's emotional reaction to winning the Daytona 500. I think that's great.

Scott Dehline (Cumberland, WI)

California, the stands are a 1/3 full and the racing sucks! When is NASCAR going to pull a race from that venue (both should be gone).

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

No. 1, the stands were a little over half full, but still unacceptable. No. 2, the racing was improved this time, but cars still get spread on on the giant 2-mile oval. And No. 3, ACS is losing both it's races, but it might lose one.

Tommy (SC)

Did Junior break his rear axle when the jack man dropped his car and Dale over revved his engine?

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

How it broke is up for debate, but HMS engineers belief they have a axle flaw they need to correct.

Brady (Fargo)

If you had to pick a RCR driver for this week who would be your pick?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

I'd probably pick Burton, but I think all three of them could do well.

Sonia (San Diego)

Has Scotty Speed improved because Kyle and the other Toyota teams are sharing information with Team Red Bull?

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

I think it's just a factor of Scott gaining experience and starting to fugure it out.

Monica (Atlanta)

How big with the celebration be on the Vegas strip if K. Busch or K. Busch wins Sunday?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

Nothing special. They're from Vegas, but not overwhelming heroes of the city. And there's always a party on the strip after the race.

Reese (SC)

How come Dave Rogers hasn't gotten Kyle's Sprint Cup #18 running as good as Jason Ratcliff has gotten Kyle's #18 Nationwide car?

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

You talking about two completely different animals. You could crew chief the Gibbs NW cars and be a winner. That's how dominant they are playing the bully role in the minors.

jeff (des moines)

how do you think the todd parrot matt kenseth combo will play out over the season?

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

Todd is much more like Robbie, which is what that teams needs. A fiery guy who will get in the face of his crew guys if he has to.

Lance (Delray Beach)

Do you see the continuing trend of Kevin Harvick having FAST cars continuing this weekend in Vegas? Also, Burton has a good history at this track - what do you think? thanks for your thoughts.

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

All indications are RCR is back. What really makes this interesting is whether they can show enough improvement to make Harvick consider staying.

becka (virginia)

what should I do thats off the pace in vegas

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

If you have time, going to see Hoover Dam is very cool.

Rex (PA)

Dale didn't seemed to concerned after finishing 32nd shrugging that he "only drives the car". Is Dale sort of disinterested in racing?

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

He's not disinterested, but he's very frustrated.

Adam (Great Falls MT)

If California and/or Phoenix lose a date, which tracks do you think have the best chance of picking up one of those races?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

Kansas Speedway is the track that's getting a second Cup race.

Riley (Phoenix)

Now that RCR seems to be back on track, do you think Hrvicks would be nuts to quit RCR for Stewert-Hass or some other team?

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

It's too early to tell. A lot may depend on what Shell wants to do, and it also will depend of what Harvick is offered contractually. I still think he's leaning toward leaving.

David (Missouri)

So what nascar this week with Blaneys team is awesome. i think they need to do that more as these start an park teams are annoying. Do they not need to prove engine failure? Are their teams that miss the race cause of qulifying but would of ran the whole race that you know of?

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

I don't have much sympathy for the start-and-parkers either. If you don't have the money to compete at the Cup level, then race at a lower level until you do. But NASCAR problem is they might not have 43 cars if they run off all the S$P cars.

Bill (Manteca)

Who's not on the radar this week..that you like?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

Off the top of my head I would say David Reutimann.

John (Texas)

Whats wrong with Stewart-Hass this year seems they aint as good as they was last year? I think this makes it a more diffucult decision for harvick to leave if rcr stays this way.

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

It's just two races John. Let's wait and see what it looks like after 10 races.

Charlie (Texas)

Newman said he didn't over rev his motor but DW squarley laid the blame on Newman for over revving his motor and blowing it. Who's right and who's wrong?

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

I don't know , but Fontana is notoriously hard on engines. Consistently high RPM for a long time. That's why Ford didn't use the new engine there last weekend.

Daniel (Phoenix)

I think Penske Racing has two of the best prospects in Allgier and Kligerman but where do you see them fitting into Cup, would they go to 4 teams or who would be the cup driver who is odd man out?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

Allgaier is closer to Cup than Kligerman right now. As always, adding a car depends on sponorship, but I would say Sam really needs to pick it up this season.

John (Illinois)

If California loses a date, they should add a third race to Bristol. Heck, one Bristol race sells as many tickets as four California races.

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

Not gonna happen John, but I'm sure you know that.

Vivi (California)

Do you think Vegas deserves 2 races more than Fontana?

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

Yes, but it's far more compliecated than that. Those tracks are owned by different companies. And Vegas isn't selling out one race right now in this economy.

Kurt (Nebraska)

Is there a chance that the Southern 500 could return to Darlington if Cali or Pocono loses one of it's races?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

Not much of a chance. Atlanta wants to keep the Labor Day weekend event, but Atlanta also is in danger of losing a race to Kentucky.

big ben (nc)

if ACS lost a date, would west coast fans be more upset about losing a race or would sponsors be more upset about losing that exposure on the west coast?

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

Sponsors far and away. National sponsors want to be in the No. 2 media market twice a year.

robert (cleveland)

how do you like mark martins cjances to finally win it this year and do you think he will improve more being this is his second year with that team

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

I don't see Mark improving much, but he'll be darn good. He's 51. At some point, age has to factor in.

buckley (sacramento)

since we are talking schedue changes: more road courses please!

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Not likely, but I would like to see NASCAR move Sonoma into the Chase.

Russell (NJ)

how come Dale doesn't twitter like Kyle, Samantha, Scott and Amanda?

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

He said he doesn't want to because fans will expect him to do it all the time.

big ben (nc)

if you were starting a new race team and you could snipe one member of the 48 team, would you take chad or jimmie on your team?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

That is an excellent question. Really tough decision, but I would go with Chad if I thought I had a solid driver.

Robert (Mich)

Will Penske run the #12 and Brad unsponsored all year and what about #39 Newman and #5 running without sponsorship?

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

All those cars are running the full season.

Jake (Florida)

I know I'm two weeks late on this question, but do you think that the reason Jr. wanted to buy DEI is because he knew T.E. wasn't too interested in the sport. Calling one hour post win and not even being at Daytona. Thanks.

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

Jr felt he could change the direction of the organization is he was making the decisions.

Andy (Iowa)

Will we ever see a cup race at the Iowa Speedway?

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

Really nice facility from what I hear, but I don't think that's happening anytime soon.

Turk (NC)

Since when is JGR considered the best in Nationwide? What about Henrick (Jr Motorsports), Roush and Harvicks?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

JGR won the title last year and won 14 races. I'd say that makes them the best.

Bill S. (High Point, NC)

With the limited number of dates available, will we ever see moving races around each year to give other tracks a date? I've heard talk of 3 tracks with 4 races switching around.

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

I don't think so, but I would like to see them move the Sprint All-Star race to different tracks every year.

Dan (Virginia)

Do you know how much longer Kyle is under contract at JGR and do you think he'll ever be a true free agent with the kind of storm we saw when Jr switched teams?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

Kyle just signed a new multi-year agreement with Gibbs.

big ben (nc)

is joe gibbs more of a "hands on" owne than teresa earnhardt? if not, why do so many people bash teresa and not joe?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

Everyone is more of a hands on owner than Teresa.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Terry, I was Just curious are you related to the Nationwide Series driver Chad Blount?

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

No, but I've talked to people who think he's my son.

Gene (Cincinnati,Ohio)

When is the Nationwide series going to be at Road America? I think June maybe.

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

June 19th.

Matt (Illinois)

Do you think NASCAR will ever restrict Sprint Cup drivers from running the Nationwide Series? Seems to me they are taking away valuable driving experience from the younger, up-and-coming drivers in the sport.

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

Yes they are, but no, I don't see NASCAR changing it. One of my biggest pet peeves is NASCAR allowing Cup stars to race for the NW title. Absolutely ridiculous.

Bill S. (High Point, NC)

Whats your take on MIS ban on smoking?

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

I guess that means I can't light up a cigar outside the media center.

Frank (Las Vegas)

Anyone else love Kevin Harvick's comments about the 48 team having a "Golden Horseshoe" stuck up their rears? as someone who had 200 bucks riding on Harvick to win cali @ 22-1 odds i was pretty upset when it came down to 48 getting outta the pits on time

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

It was a funny comment that I managed to write my entire column around. Kevin has given me a few of those over the years.

Trixie (Tacoma, WA)

If Chad Blount WAS your son and you were travelling to all the races, would you stay in hotels or get a motorcoach?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

I don't think Chad has a motorcoach, but I'd stay in it if he did.

Leslie (California)

When Kyle jumps into the top 12 after Sunday do you think both Kurt and Kyle will stay in the top 12 until after Richmond?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

I expect both of them to make the Chase.

Shaun (Charlotte)

Who would you bet on winning the championship this year? Johnson or the field?

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

I'd take the field because I don't think he can keep doing this forever, but I said that last year, too.

Yuli (PA)

We heard Kyle Petty saying the Chasers are already becoming evident. Do you think #88, #14 and #39 are already finished for the year?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

I'm not sure that's what Kyle meant, but no one is out of it at this point. Six drivers who were in the top 12 after two races last year didn't make the Chase.

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

Gotta run folks. Good questions today. I gotta get packed before heading the Sin City in the morning. Have a great week. Peace.
