Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:00 PM)

Taking a break from my favorite Olympic event, curdling, to hang with you guys. Wonder if stock car racing ever will be an Olympic sport? Nah. Who would we compete against? Enough with random thoughts, fire away with questions.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

How many Nationwide Series wins does Danica Patrick's team(Pit Crew) has with other drivers?

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Wow. Tough one off the bat. Honestly, I don't know. Sure there are some members that were with Brad Keselowski when he won a few. That one will take some research to be accurate.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY )

Are you related to the NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Chad Blount?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Sorry, Terry is chatting tomorrow. So no I am not related.

YAR8pack (Candor)

Mr Newton, hope you're good. As a native of the Darlington area, what's your take on California having two dates. The excuses Ms Zucker keeps giving sounds very similar to the excuses NASCAR wouldn't buy from Rockingham and Darlington when those places were trying to save their dates. Too bad neither one of those places were owned by ISC. I'm all for the west coast having a race, but why does it have to be at ACS? That place is BORING!

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

My bias towards Darlington aside, I don't see any reason for two races at California. If they use the same standards they used at taking races from Rockingham and Darlington then this is an easy decision. I'd love to see a race back at Rockingham, but my guess is Kansas gets the next one. Not so sure that's a great idea either.

Tim (AZ)

David, now that all the facts are out regarding the 17 crew chief change, what are your thoughts? To me it almost seems like Kenseth took a stand and wants Reiser back, although Roush made it perfectly clear he was at the press conference to endorse Drew and show his uncertainty with Matt's decision. Thanks

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Seems Kenseth was as patient as he could be and gave Drew one last chance at Daytona. Heard they made a shock change that completely messed up the handling of the car and any chance there was of making that relationship work. AS for a Reiser reunion, can't see that happening anytime soon. If ever.

Rick (Philly)

I am a big 48 fan, for that I make no apologies. I am tired of people whinning that the 48 team wins too often. The reality is that the other 42 teams lose too often. What do your breathern, in the media, who complain that they win too much, want the 48 team to do?

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

You have no reason to apologize. As for the media I can only speak for myself and I have no problem with Johnson's dominance. It'll be nice to sit back years from now and say I was a part of the greatest run in NASCAR history. No different than being around Michael Jordan during his run. People need to get a life.

Bryan (Belmont, OH)

do you think shr will get things going or continue to struggle?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

It's way too early to panic. Remember last year they had it going for 26 weeks and then struggled. Perhaps Tony and that team are pacing themselves. Regardless, these things run in cycles.

RAY GORDON REID ( STATELINE NEVADA 84449)

QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.25 PM HI DAVID WH0 YOU HAVE FOR VEGAS THIS SUNDAY

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Was thinking about that before the chat and I'm going go to with Jeff Burton. RCR cars are running strong and he likes that track. And this has nothing to do with Burton being on NASCAR Now tonight.

Nicholas Rolando (Orlando)

David, hope you are doing well! How dissapointed or worried should I be about the Fords performance at ACS?

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Maybe disappointed, but not worried. Just like the SHR question, it's a long season.

Brett (Charlotte)

Is it just me or does it seem that the track is more to blame for attendance woes in California? It just doesn't provide exciting racing. Sure the restarts are exciting, but you can't sell a 500 mile race on 4 or 5 restarts. What are the chances that they make changes to the speedway or NASCAR looks for a better venue in SoCal?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

I agree the restarts are exciting. Double file restats have benefited California maybe more than any track. As for attendance I'm sure the racing has something to do with it. Or it may just be a lack of interest and the fact the track is an hour from Los Angeles and people don't want to deal with the heavy traffic. Sure there are a lot of reasons, but the bottom line is the track doesn't deserve two dates as it stands.

Jane (WA)

Any baby news for the Edwards?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

Stork still circling.

Todd (GA)

I was very dissapointed with the run JR had on suday, Do you think he will rebound and run good this sunday or are we in for another long year?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

Who knows. Really. I think a lot of people expected more. I'm supposed to talk to Lance McGrew later today and discuss on NASCAR Now tonight. Tune in and maybe I can shed some light. Or not.

Greg (Sacramento, Ca)

Do you see the 24 making a change at Crew Chief if perormance doesn't improve by late season ? I can't see Gordon finishing his career with Latarte, when the car is at its best its "above average" and I wonder if that is getting a little stale. Sounds like Gordon has 2-4 years left (maybe more?) is it now or never in regards to a change ?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Not sure you can blame the crew chief for the first two races. He's run up front in both and, really, don't you remember he finished third in points a year ago. The only two people to beat him were his teammates. It's not like they're stinking up the joint.

TG (PA)

Dave, I heard you call in to talk to Junior but couldn't hear your question. What was it because I heard Junior say you wasted your question!

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Too funny. I actually was at dinner with my son watching Duke play hoops. I had a friend ask the question and Dale responded with it was a waste. I really didn't think she would ask to be honest, but I asked what he thought of the person who pretends to be Dale Jr.'s beard on Twitter. Yes, silly. Junior's response was perfect.

Devin (Johnson City TN)

Do you think Burton should have gone 100% all the way into turn one to ensure Jimmie would go a lap down? If he did, would NASCAR have penalized him for driving dangerously under caution?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

Look, Johnson got lucky. Enough said about that. Burton had no way of knowing it would turn out that way. It just pays to be in the right position.

Jamerson (Georgia)

I read online that Mark Martin is going to be sponsored by hendrickcars.com in the Atlanta race. What does it say about the economy when last year's championship runner-up has to get sponsorship from his boss's other business?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Says it's still pretty bad, don't you think?

John (Spokane WA)

So, Token Dale JR ? Here... *IF* he truly is going to let his teammates help him out this year.. is he a threat to make the chase.. or will he fade into mediocrity again.

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

I do believe he is a threat to make the Chase and that he's working with his teammates. The last part I can't answer, but I think we'll have an idea after 10 races.

Dave (GA)

Pick for this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

Jeff Burton.

Mike (New York)

Anything surprising you after first two races?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Nothing major other than I expected Kyle Busch and Hamlin to be closer to Victory Lane than they have been.

dustin (lynchburg va)

with all the danica coverage(I am not complaining) have we lost sight on how some nationwide drivers are doing? Specifically Scott Riggs...hes passed more cars this year than anyone and has taken a not so good team last year and has them running better...whats the outlook for him and RAB Racing this year.

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

It's great to see Scott getting a chance. Talked to him a few months ago and all he asked for was a chance. As for Danica stealing all the headlines, the series should simply be thankful for headlines. Good stories won't get overlooked. Trust me.

Joe's Wife (FL)

Good afternoon Dave! Can you tell me the tracks similiar to Las Vegas where I can compare stats?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Try Atlanta and Texas.

Jim (Florida)

Max Papis seems to have a lot of heart, can the same be said for his cars.

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

You're right, he is passionate about what he does. Would be nice to see him in decent equipment to see what he can do.

dz (phx, az)

hey newt! after reading your article about scott and his difficulties trying to adjust to nascar who would you list as the top 3 drivers that had a whole lot of talent but couldn't perform in nascar? just curious. thanks buddy.

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

Sure there's a long list, but the one that comes to mind most recently is Casey Atwood. He supposedly had all the talent in the world but never made it.

Jamerson (Georgia)

I'm starting to wonder if this might be Junior's last year at HMS. If he leaves, what do you think the chances are that he replaces Harvick at RCR?

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

You're not alone I'm betting. As for replacing Harvick, a lot would have to happen to get to that point. Harvick would have to leave, which I believe he will even though it might be the worst decision of his career. And Earnhardt would have to get released from Hendrick, which could happen if he had somebody waiting in the wings ready to step in. Can you say Kasey Kahne. So I guess you're wanting to see Dale Jr. in the Black No. 3.

dz (phx, az)

hey newt! what is your favorite winter olympic sport to watch?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

As I said from the top curling. Love the drama and strategy. Wish they made it into a bar game.

Mike (Atlanta)

David, i'm not ready to throw in the towel on Jr just yet. Sunday's race seemed to parallel Jimmie's Daytona 500 in too many ways to say it's the same story as last year, with the handling issues followed by a broken axle that he thought was a flat. Thoughts?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

I agree it's too early to throw in the towel, but i wouldn't parallel it to JJ. He has, after all, won four straight titles. We know he knows how to win.

Wes (Dallas)

Here's a story right up your alley Newton, The National Enquirer says Dale Jr. and Danica are fueding, how much stock do you put into it?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Am told by people at JRM there is absolutely no truth to the story. End of story.

Jamerson (Georgia)

Top-5 at Vegas?

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Burton, Johnson, Kyle Busch, Gordon and Martin.

big ben (nc)

do a lot of drivers agree with harvick about the 48 team being lucky or is he kind of on his own in having that opinion?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

You don't win four straight titles and 48 races without a lot more talent than luck.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

Do you think the 24 team can rip off a few wins this year? They ran really well at Daytona and Fontana but couldn't put it together at the end, sort of like all those runner up finishes from last year. Will the new spoiler be the difference for them? Also, nice piece on Speed, hope he does really well this year.

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

Thanks on Speed story. As for the 24, I would think two or more wins definitely are within reach. As for the spoiler, that's the wild card for a lot of teams. Which team figures it out first will have the best shot at winning the title.

John (Illinois)

If they ever made auto racing an olympic event, what country would Juan Pablo Montoya represent? Please give your answer in English and Spanish.

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Republic of Colombia and Republica of Colombia. Sorry, my five years of Spanish in high school and college were wasted.

Scott (Manchester, NH)

By Nascar confiscating the 66 car, is that a shot across the bow for the start and park teams? Is Nascar actually going to do anything about this practice? Or is this a way for Nascar to save face by saying we took the car and found nothing wrong, so it is no longer an issue and they do nothing as usual and let it keep happening?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Look, the car qualified fifth and ran up front before being parked. It was a natural for a random even if it hadn't been parked. Maybe it was a shot, but there's not much NASCAR can really do about start and parkers. Is it really hurting the sport that much? Any? I don't think so. It's racers trying to make a dime in a tough economy.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

With the foreign invasion in nascar, I think if we get the IROC guys to bring back the pontiac trans ams we could have Nascar Auto raceing in the Olympics. Do you like that Idea?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

IROC style racing would be cool in the Olympics, but it'll never happen unless they moved the Olympics to fit around NASACR's schedule. Heck, it wouldn't happen anyway.

Mark (Mount Airy, MD)

Hey David, I know it's early, but what has been the biggest surprise so far this season??????

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

I'd say Scott Speed, featured on the top of ESPN.com. He's 15th in points after two races with an 11th at California. Impressive start.

Jonathan (Honolulu)

Mr. Newton, NASCAR has allowed the "rubbing is racing" rule to go back into effect, and soon we will see the "old school" spoiler back on our beloved stock cars... When will NASCAR finally give us back the tracks we want to see? i.e. Darlington, N.Wilesboro, Rockingham?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

How do I put this? Never. As much as I'd like to see it, I just don't.

Jack (Brooklyn, NY)

So David, when you ask Dale Jr if there's any truth to this new Enquirer story about a fued between he and Danica, you think we'll find out more about how the old story involving the hot tub was true?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Good memory. Ah, the hot tub story. One of my favorites. If you missed it google spring break, earnhardt and florida and take a look. Fun stuff.

JAMMER (UTAH)

DAVE, WITH THE LUCK OF THE 48 THIS WEEKEND, DO YOU THINK CHAD KNAUS SOLD HIS SOUL TO THE DEVIL? TO YOU REALLY THINK THERE IS A GOLDEN HORSESHOE UP HIS "BUTT" ACCORDING HARVICK?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

No and no. Hard work sometimes gets rewarded with luck.

Johnny (Alabama)

I've heard alot of conflicting reports. What actually broke on Junior's car this past sunday? The axle or the drive plate? Could that have been affecting the handling of his car during the earlier parts of the race?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

I've heard both as well. Do know that McGrew was screaming for an axel after he went to the garage. Will ask him when he hopefully calls later and tell you tonight on NASCAR Now.

Diane (Virginia)

Hi Mr. Newton, Hope you are doing well. Wouldn't you agree that 2 races into the season is a little early to write Dale Jr's season off as a failure?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

I would totally agree. If you do then there are a lot of other drivers that have failed as well.

TG (PA)

Whats the deal with the 88 crew not having an extra axle ready. Last year when Vickers neede a new axle, his crew had one and he never lost a lap. Do you think Hendrick had a little talk with the 88 team.

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

I hope to find out later. McGrew didn't sound happy on the radio.

  (2:50 PM)

be right back. on the phone with mcgrew now.

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

OK, the problem with Junior's car was the axle originally and then the drive shaft broke. Apparently Jimmie Johnson's axle was close to breaking as well. There you have it from the horse's mouth.

Butler (Ohio)

Does Kasey Kahne seem to be upset again with RPM with a bad start?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

Not at all. He had a great car at Daytona and a solid car last week before he made a mistake. He is probably more mad at himself.

Thoughts?

steve (Battle Creek, MI)

Do you think Carl Edwards should race full time in both series since he had a off year in cup last year

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Not normally, but with a new baby on the way that's going to make it tough.

Gino (Puerto Rico)

Hello, David. Do you foresee NASCAR finally adding a speedometer to the COT?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Nope. Look, there are numbers on the tac just as there would be on the speedometer. It wouldn't make a difference. And NASCAR gives them five miles. To break the limit is just pushing too hard.

Chris (Charlotte, NC)

What is this 88 Chat or NASCAR chat?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Lance McGrew will be on a chat tomorrow at 12:30 I believe. The info has been on twitter, where you also can follow me if you like, and probably on Junior's website.

Greg (WI)

Has anyone heard of Drew Blick's side of the 17 divorce? Is he upset with Kenseth? Was this a mutual agreement?

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

I have not heard his side, but he was just reassigned to crew chief for Edwards in the Nationwide series.

Colleen (canada)

Hey David, love following you on Twitter. Not a racing question but have you ever curled before? I love watching it. I was watching TMZ the other day and they said it's just like vacuuming. It's easy. I would really love to see them try it. Take care.

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

Lol. No, I have never curled, but it looks like a blast. I seriously had it on until a few minutes ago. I missed the end of the US women's match to talk to McGrew. Who won?

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

I've been watching NASCAR since the mid-'90s and was wondering if you could recommend essential reading to brush up on the history of the sport. I know about the significant moments, but am thin on the details of what went on back in the day.

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

There are several good books out there. Bet if you checked with my ESPN colleague Ryan McGee on twitter or email he'd be able to help more. He's quite the historian. Pretty good since he doesn't look 70ish at all. Just kidding Ryan.

Joe's Wife (FL)

OK...you got me curious and I found the USA/China 'curling'. I must be living under a rock because i don't understand the point of this game...but I am getting a good laugh at it!

David Newton
  (3:02 PM)

Glad you are enjoying. I have to run now. Appreciate all the questions and sorry for the break for an interview. Remember, if you have questions during the week I try to answer as many as I can on Twitter. You can find me at DNewtonespn. Outta here.
