Chat with Andy Katz

Marc (Charlotte)

If the Tar Heels win tonight and at Duke on Saturday, how far would they have to go in the ACC Tourney to merit any consideration?

Andy Katz
  (11:05 AM)

Get to the final to have the discussion.

Trey (Birmingham, AL)

What does Duke have to do to secure the last #1 seed?

Andy Katz
  (11:05 AM)

Win the ACC regular-season title outright. I'm not so sure Duke has to win the ACC conference tournament.

Scotty (Washington, D.C.)

Why is the selection committee made up of 50 percent BCS schools, but they only make up 20 percent of the total conferences and 20 percent of the total D1 teams?

Andy Katz
  (11:08 AM)

The positions are nominated but over the years the proportion has shifted to include more BCS members because the tournament has more BCS schools in the at-large pool. That's my theory at least.

Nicholas (New York, NY)

Do you think Cuse sealed a #1 seed with its lopsided win over Villanova this weekend? Or can be be lost if they falter down the stretch?

Andy Katz
  (11:13 AM)

Locked. And I would venture to guess Syracuse will be in the South in the Houston Regional as the top seed.

DJ (Cuse)

If the Mizzou Tigers beat Iowa St tonight and get to 10 wins and lock up at worse 5th place in the Big 12 are they a lock for the dance?

Andy Katz
  (11:15 AM)

Yes. I had already penciled in Mizzou as in the Dance.

Aaron (Syracuse)

Andy, in your opinion, what is the % chance that our national champ comes from the current top 3?

Andy Katz
  (11:15 AM)

At least 75 percent if not 80 percent chance.

Sarah (Dallas, Texas)

Why do analyst use the so called, "eye test" to support the inclusion of BCS schools to get at-large invites, but then also use it exclude non-BCS schools from at-large consideration?

Andy Katz
  (11:16 AM)

That's why we're not on the committee. Seriously, there are all different kinds of criteria that any one would use. The committee votes on computers and no one else except the NCAA staff can see the vote totals.

DAVID FRANKEL (ROYERSFORD, PA)

I'VE BEEN READING VARIOUS EXPERTS SATING THE CASE FOR KANSAS BEING NUMBER ONE THIS WEEK- THE EVIDECE OFFERED IS THE FACT THAT KANSAS HAS LOST ON THE ROAD AND REMAINS UNDEFEATED AT HOME. DON'T YOU BELIEVE THAT IF YOU ARE TO MAKE THAT ARGUMENT SYRACUSE SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED FOR BEING UNDEFEATED ON THE ROAD WHERE IN ANY TOP CONFERENCE THIS IS ALMOST UNHEARD OF?

Andy Katz
  (11:19 AM)

I've never understood if using all caps is to make a point, just a mistake or anger. Anyway, I had Syracuse No. 1 because I look at the snapshot of the week in a poll. Syracuse played better last week than Kansas. End of story for me.

Gabe (Minot ND)

Do you think the MWC can get 4 teams in the NCAA tournament?

Andy Katz
  (11:19 AM)

It would help if San Diego State and UNLV were definitely in the semifinals and at least one of them -- likely the Aztecs got to the final and lost to either UNM or BYU.

Nate (South Bend)

When is Gody coming back?

Andy Katz
  (11:25 AM)

When I talked to Mike Brey a few days ago he wasn't optimistic. He didn't want Luke to rush it back and do damage to the knee. So it sounded to me like there was a strong possibility that he wouldn't be playing this season.

Sean (Chicago)

Why is ESPN showing Alabama at South Carolina on the U, while KU KSU is on Full Court?

Andy Katz
  (11:30 AM)

These decisions are made in the preseason. I'm not sure on the flexibility. We do have a strong SEC contract on ESPNU. Fire up the computer and watch the game on ESPN360.com!

Peggy (Ohio)

How far down will Kansas' and Kentucky's losses take them in the polls this week? Will they still be a one seed?

Andy Katz
  (11:31 AM)

I have no doubt they will be since both were losses on the road in their respective conferences at difficult spots.

Gabe (Minot ND)

with New Mexico beating BYU on Saturday? Does that make them the best team in the west?

Andy Katz
  (11:32 AM)

You can make that argument and it would be hard to debate.

Alex (Ohio)

Who wins the Big 10 Tournament now that Purdue is Hummel-less??

Andy Katz
  (11:35 AM)

I will go with either Ohio State or Wisconsin. Just my gut on this one.

Ryan (Los Angeles)

Does not participating in the NCAA tournament really hurt players trying to get drafted by the NBA this summer?

Andy Katz
  (11:38 AM)

Not at all. There are plenty of NIT, CBI and players who didn't play in a postseason that can be in the lottery. It makes no difference.

Gabe (Minot ND)

Do you think Steve Alford had a legitimate chance of winning coach of the year?

Andy Katz
  (11:39 AM)

MWC? Yes. National? He'll be on the list but I would say Jim Boeheim of Syracuse, John Calipari of Kentucky, Frank Martin of Kansas State and Gary Williams of Maryland possibly will be in the hunt as well.

Heath (Dili, Timor Leste via Stillwater OK)

Please throw me a bone across the ocean since I'm here missing the March Madness - Is Oklahoma St getting in or not? They just knocked off KU, and it would be a shame to not have Anderson in the tourney with a chance to go off.

Andy Katz
  (11:46 AM)

Love that you signed on from Dili. Yes, don't fret. Oklahoma State will get in the dance. Get your bracket on ESPN.com when you're away as well.

Greg (Boston)

Andy, buddy, what about Miss. St has them around every expert bracket? I just see nothing in their profile that would even put them in my first 8 out to be honest. No wins against over .500 SEC teams, best win overall ODU? Help me out (if you can, I know your employer might not like to cost their masters money).

Andy Katz
  (11:50 AM)

I agree. I'm not sold on Mississippi State's profile yet either. I still think the Bulldogs need to do work. The Bulldogs didn't close out in games against Richmond or against the upper echelon in the conference. Let's see what happens in the next week.

Quavarius (Atlanta)

Andy, if the season ended TODAY, who are your Final-Four picks and Championship game participants?

Andy Katz
  (11:52 AM)

KentuckyKansasSyracuseOhio StateKentucky vs. Kansas has been my pick but I won't be surprised at all if Syracuse wins the title. This is fluid as you know.

Vince (Pittsburgh)

Why should teams like Miss St and St. Mary's get in when they play in inferior conference and don't have the type of wins as Notre Dame or Cincy? I find it hard to believe that the committee really thinks St. Mary's is better than any of the top 11 BE teams.

Andy Katz
  (11:56 AM)

Once again it's all comparative data. My issue wiht Saint Mary's was they had multiple opportunities and didn't get the wins needed (Vandy, Gonzaga twice, USC in Honolulu). Saint Mary's did win at Utah State and that win should matter.

Shawn (GAEL NATION)

Hey Andy why are you hating on St Mary's. I saw you the other night on CBB Final saying they should not be i. Why?

Andy Katz
  (11:57 AM)

I'm not hating on Saint Mary's. A year ago I was huge proponent of the Gaels getting a bid. I just want to see Saint Mary's win a big game after New Year's. I love Moraga and McKeon Pavilion!

Derek (Indianapolis)

With Purdue Hummell-less what midwest team has the best chance of making the Indy final four?

Andy Katz
  (11:57 AM)

Ohio State. Evan Turner can carry this team.

Brandon (Chicago)

Evan Turner has wrapped up POY correct?

Andy Katz
  (11:58 AM)

I will be shocked if Turner now doesn't win the award. Thanks for the questions. Enjoy the week.
