Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks! I'll chat with you today from Bristol, Conn., this week as I am co-hosting Friday Night Fights tonight and then tomorrow I'll make my way over to the Mohegan Sun to cover the Devon Alexander-Juan Urango unification fight on HBO. The new notebook is up, there are new blogs this week, the schedule it updated, Pacquiao-Clottey is next week and Mosley and Mayweather were on tour, so there is a lot going on and much to discuss. Let's get to it.

Eric (Rhode Island)

Hey Dan, you got a prediction for the Alexander/Urango fight? To me, most likely scenario is Devon by UD.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

I agree with you on that. I think Devon is at another level athletically. He's much faster than Urango. But Urango can crack and when he wants to be, he's very determined. So it could be a goodnk clash of styles unless the hand and foot speed is too much for him to deal with. I think we'll know pretty early.

Edmund (Seattle, WA)

Who do you think will win in the Dirrell/Abraham fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I am intrigued by the matchup. I want to see if Abraham can track down a slick boxer with great speed. And I want to see if Dirrell can handle the pressure you know Abraham will eventually put on him. I think Abraham is obviously the favorite, but Dirrell has outstanding skills and I think he probably learned from the Froch fight that he'll need to be a little more aggressive to win. So we'll see.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Speaking of Dirrell, let me take a second and offer my condolences to his promoter, Gary Shaw, who's dad died Thursday at age 92.

Charles (Philly)

Based on Kieran Mulvaney's live blog and the atmosphere at the movie theater in Arlington where I watched the Marquez fight, I'm going to conclude that D.C. is a pro-Mayweather town! Is that a fair assessment?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I think so, although Shane certainly had his share of supporters in the Lincoln Theatre during the tour stop this week.

AJ Pesh (West Fargo ND)

Dan, can you please smack Michael Wilbon upside the head for me? Whenever they discuss any boxing issue on PTI, he ALWAYS adds in his snarky comment of "boxing is dead". Talk about irritating and annoying! What's his problem?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Ignore him. He's a great columnist and great on TV but boxing ain't his forte.

Micah (Binghamton, NY)

It's kind of gona backburner, but is Pacquiao still following through with legal action against the Mayweathers?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Yes. According to Arum and Pacquiao side, they are following through. They were asked about it on a media call the other day and said they were going forward but these things are a slow process.

Jerry (New Mexico)

Dan, in all honesty, considering what FNF?s has done so far this year, has there ever been a better time to be a boxing writer/reporter at the network?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

FNF has been great this season but I cover all boxing, so if we're having a great season it just adds to the quality fights to talk and write about.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dtm nice notebook can you see Alexander/Berto for unified welterweight championship say in 2012?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

I could see that someday. That would be an interesting fight.

Rico (Newark, NJ)

Showtime and HBO could learn a lesson from ESPN?s fight scheduling. They have done more with less than any broadcast network in a long time.

Charles (Philly)

Even if Celestino Caballero never gets his fight with Juanma Lopez, I'm looking forward to seeing Daud Yordan again to find out if he's for real or if that momentary blitzing of Robert Guerrero was just a flash in the pan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I agree. Considering the fight was made very quickly it's still a very quality match. The winner be in a great position in the featherweight division.

Carl (Winston-Salem, NC)

Congrats on getting the boos at the press conference. The day you get cheers from the crowd is the day you become a sellout. And thanks for your honesty in merely stating the obvious when it comes to pointing out the risk-factor (or lack thereof) of some of Mayweather?s recent opponents.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Thanks. The booing didn't really concern me. I was actually amused. I'd rather get booed than have them silent. LOL. I did joke with De La Hoya afterward that I was glad he was there to be booed louder than I was.

Ian (Wales)

Just read the Notebook. You do it every week, Dan. Too much coverage of Latino fighters who will never hear the words: ?jump ball? and barely any coverage of the European scene. Why the continued bias? Is it because you?re Hispanic and find the European fighters boring? I think your readers deserve to know the truth.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

You are way off base. Couple of things here. I have written about European fights regularly as well in the notebooks as well as Latinos. Also, usually the fights I write about are available on US TV be it in English or Spanish. Further, I am not Hispanic even though my name sounds like it. I love Latin fighters and I love the Europeans also. Go back in the archives of my notebooks and you will find plenty of notes about guys like Felix Sturm or Kevin Mitchell or Sergei Dzinziruk, etc... as you will on the top Hispanics.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Dan, could you explain to me the thought process of why promoters will put on excellent doubleheader events with licensing fees that total a couple million dollars...yet are reluctant to put on excellent PPV cards when they stand to make 10 fold...this just annoys me and makes little business sense

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Because generally the main event fighters eat up most of the money on a major ppv. So every dollar the promoter puts into the undercard is money out of his and the main event fighter' pockets. If HBO is paying $3 million in a license fee, the fighters and promoter make a straight deal on the cash. There is no upside. On a PPV, there is far more risk. The fighter usually takes a guarantee plus a piece of the action that is often split something like 80-20 in the fighter's favor once the ppv reaches a pre-determined number. If the promoter spends big money on an undercard, that eats into both of their profits.

Peter (NYC)

Khan vs. Malinaggi. Haven't seen it on the sched. Is something holding it up?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

No. Just working it's way through the process. I expect it to be finalized shortly.

Beenie (S. Fla)

Dan, any word on what fight could replace Cloud-Johnson as the co-feature on the April 10th HBO card? I plan to attend that card and am a bit disappointed that Cloud pulled out to say the least.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

It will be Caballero-Yordan, as I have reported.

Kevin (Greensboro)

Dan, I think last week?s ESPN FNF was the fight of the year so far! If only ESPN had HALF the boxing budget of Showtime or HBO, they would blow them out of the water. Do you ever see the day when ESPN makes a bigger commitment to boxing like the other sports they carry (NBA, NASCAR, etc)?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

I don't know but what I do know is if the network put a few more resources behind the sport it could become a dominant player.

Tom (Dallas, Texas)

Dan,is the Vitali Klitschko/Nico Valuev fight a done deal? Saw a website claiming such.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

I have spoken to the Klitschko side as recently as yesterday and they say the fight is dead. I suppose it could come back to life if Don King got in reality on the money for the Valuev side.

Don (Miami)

Dan just saw floyd last night on sportscenter. Is he delusional? Referring to himself as TBE the best ever what a joke!!!! It's ridiculous statements like that which make people hate floyd!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

He is entitled to say what he wants and we are entitled to tell him he's full of crap.

John (San Fran)

Dan, How did Mosley look up close? From video, he is looking beaten and not everyone is B-hop. Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

I sat with Shane at length interviewing him in DC the other day and he looked and sounded great. He is as hyped for this fight as I have EVER seen him and I have covered every one of his fights from De La Hoya 1 to the present, including attending most of them live. He's going to be ready for this fight.

Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)

Is there any truth to the rumour that Juanma could be put on the Cotto-Foreman card?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

It's been mentioned but I think Top Rank and HBO are also talking about a separate BAD date for Juanma. Obviously, if he goes on the undercard it adds a lot to the show though. Nothing has been officially decided in that regard.

Adriel (L.A)

If Manny Pacquiao were to lose to Clottey and retire does he damage his legacy?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

It wouldn't be damaged it just wouldn't grow. How can you argue with a seven-division champion who beat all kinds of top fighters in exciting fights?

craig (england)

hey dan, whats with the hating on roger mayweather? im not a fan of the guy but dont disrespect a good world champ and a great trainer... ive lost a lot of respect for you after that, who do you think you are? thats not journalism, let the fans form the opinions you just give us the facts m8

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Dude I am entitled to my opinion too just like you are and my blog is for my opinion. If you don't like it don't read it.

dantheboxingfan (flanders NJ)

Dan, after watching showtime fightcamp 360, it like like Jermain Taylor has every intention of coming back with his wifes support as well. Where does this man go from here and can he be effective at this stage?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I am not sure when he will fight or who he will fight but I have no doubt Jermain will eventually fight again.

Quincy (Boston)

How much of Floyd's "crap" is an act to generate interest in his fights, where he pits himself as the villian? Because it seems that there are a lot of underreported stories about his being very down to earth outside the promotion setting.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Floyd is a master of playing the game, so a lot of it is by design.

Michael (Hollywood, CA)

Was at the press conference in L.A. yesterday and Joe Calzaghe was brought up to the stage at the beginning to wave hi to everyone. Any idea what he was doing there and in L.A.?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I watched the presser live on the 'net and I saw that too. I'm not sure what he was doing there but he has a close relationship with the folks at Golden Boy, who were involved in his final fights so that would make sense that he came over while he was in town.

psycho (LaLaLand)

how do you like this fight dan: erislandy Lara vs Angulo?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

The Lara people would fight Angulo in a heartbeat and have told that to HBO. No way Gary Shaw risks that at this point since Lara means nothing yet. Lara is an exceptionally skilled fighter and would probably give Angulo fits with his movement and skill.

Bill (NYC)

So is Foreman-Cotto on HBO or PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

That has not been determined yet. The continue to discuss it, but HBO has an offer on the table to do it on live HBO.

Joe Calzaghe (L.A)

I was in town to party with my main man Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

That would be tough since his main man was 3,000 miles away in Virginia.

Briks (Philly)

I hate to be pessimistic, but I hear a little slurring when Shane talks. He's been in the game for a long time and never backed down from a war. I hope that doesn't take too much of a toll on him later.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

I don't agree at all. Shane sounds to me the same way he sounded the first time I ever talked to him in 2000.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Just want to say congrats to Mills Lane! And no matter how many people boo you Dan the freaks always got your back.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

LOL. Thanks. Yes, nice to see Mills Lane be honored by the BWAA.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, what is the delay in naming the site for Ward/Green?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Goossen and DiBella are not on the same page yet. They're having some issues. I'll get ironed out.

Don (Buffalo)

Dan - is Top Rank really putting on a card on FSN opposite the Mayweather / Mosley fight? Seems counter-productive to the sport of boxing...

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Top Rank is doing a show that night but it is not a serious competitor. The eyes of the boxing world will be on Shane and Floyd. It's not a big deal.

Rick (Marina)

I might land a job in VA, Im a west coast guy. Whats it like over In Virginia?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Been there 10 years next month. Love it. Have no plans to leave.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

D$, missed the past couple chats as I was on a binge all olympics, but good to be back! Question, is it typical for HBO to only have one fight on a BAD card like this weekend? Or is it a World Championship Boxing show? Im trying to remember HBO showing just one fight on BAD and cant think of one. Undercard looks awful. Main event should be good though.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

HBO has done that every now and then. For example, Gatti-Ward 1 and Morales-Barrera 1 were single fight BAD shows. This Saturday, HBO has a big block of good sports programming so it only wanted one fight due to the schedule. They have the fight but also have the Pacquiao-Clottey preview show and the new documentary on the Magic-Bird rivalry (which I am psyched to see).

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

Does ESPN give you a quota on many stories or words you have to write for them per week?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

No.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, I haven't heard anything from local boy Vicente Escobedo, is there any news?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Interesting you ask. I spoke with Richard Schaefer this week and one of the fights that is possible for the Jones-BHop ppv is Escobedo against Rocky Juarez in the event Litzau does not accept the fight.

Lance (Florida)

We know you are not a fan of MMA but will you watch James Toney when he makes his UFC debut?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I won't watch, but I will check the 'net for the result.

bj (new haven)

Dan I love your articles and have no problem with any of your material, so dont take this as insult. But did you ever think about doing a mailbag? Or do these chats basically count as a mailbag? I always find mailbags to be pretty fun.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I think the chats do the job.

Charles (Philly)

Serious question with no offense intended: what other notable fighters has Roger Mayweather trained besides his nephew and that woman whom he allegedly beat up?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

None that I am aware of.

Rick (Marina)

Freddie Roach is on the Rome right now on the radio. Its Roach's 50th Bday today.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Yes it is, Happy Birthday to Coach Roach.

hectec (chitown)

whats the status on j.c chavez jr??? when does his suspension end? will he ever become a top flight fighter????

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Three words boss: Read the Notebook.

Ken (Newport Beach)

Not sure if you caught Manny on Kimmel, but might I suggest you pass along a note to Bob Arum to forbid his boy from trying to explain why he objected to the blood test at 14 days. The explanation was fairly weak. Did you see it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I did see it. His explanation was way weaker than his singing.

JB (Toronto)

Should I be excited to watch Rico Ramos tonight? Never seen him before.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I had Rico as one of my top 25 prospects to watch when I did a big thing on the top prospects at the end of 2009. I am looking forward to seeing him on FNF tonight. Good prospect from a strong amateur background. Fast and seems like he can also bang.

Frank (Boston)

What was the deal with the mag article about Clottey this week? I understand he is the underdog, but I know I'm not the only one who thinks he actually beat Cotto. The author made it seem like he has no business in the ring with Pacquiao.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

I read the story, which was very well done. I think the premise was he was a substitute who nobody knows other than Freaks. So I had no issue with the story at all.

Brian (Toronto)

How close is Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron to being finalized ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

The fight is agreed to in terms as far as I am told but not signed and they have no venue as of yet.

rob (williston Park, ny)

did I see correctly that the doubleheader on 3/26 w/ Spinks and Cunningham title fights, which is 3 weeks away has no site yet

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

It has a site. As I wrote in today's notebook -- the card is at Treasure Island in Vegas.

Raul Jr. (Everett, WA)

Ortiz-Maidana was the most recent one fight BAD show

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

You are right but that was a doubleheader originally but John-Juarez 2 was ppd.

Mackey (Oklahoma)

do you consider mosley the best fighter of his era

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

No.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

No I don't.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Buy or sell: James Toney being even more unintelligible after his UFC stint?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Buy. Because now he can get kicked in the head too besides just punched.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

How legit is Kevin Mitchell?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Good rising contender. Has looked great in his last few fights.

Andres (Chula Vista, CA)

What is the hold up in announcing the location of Ward-Green? I know Oakland is a possible site; is there another under consideration?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Another possible location is in Okalahoma, near where Green is from.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,Got ask Dan...are you a "Dancing with the Stars" fan? With Miss Scherzinger participating this time I've made her my pick to take it all!

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Yes, I have watched it for the past few years and enjoyed it. I will be watching this season too!

Joe (Buffalo)

Craig, in regards to why people such as Dan don't like Roger Mayweather, it may have something to do with his lack of respect for people in general, such as his physical abuse of a woman...

Jorge ((East Los Angeles) via Houston airport)

Dan, I'm on my way to Connecticut to check our boy Devon out, in his first HBO main event. I went to see him fight Witter at Rancho Mirage, so I figured I had to see him pick up that 2nd belt. Anyway Devon can stop Urango? I just don't see it with the chin he has. I'm guessing a 117-111 type decision, thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Impressive devotion from a true Freak. I love it! Devon's power is underrated to me and Urango has been down before and wobbled so if Devon let's those hands go with shots Urango doesn't see -- anything is possible. But I see it basically how you do. Devon winning a convincing decision.

Jason (NJ)

Is Larry Merchant working next week's PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

No, he's not working the Pac-Clottey fight. Max is on next week's PPV and Larry is on the Mosley-Mayweather PPV.

Manny Pacquiao (Los Angeles)

What did you think about my singing the other night on Jimmy Kimmel's show?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Bravo. Nothing's gonna change my love for you.

Andres (Chula Vista, CA)

What's the deal with Deontay Wilder? He hasn't fought yet this year. What's with his inactivity?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

He was on a brief suspension in Ohio for some ridiculous thing -- long story but bottom line is music with some vulgar words was played during one of his walk ins, which is against the rules of the Ohio commission. And so even though it was not music Deontay picked or asked to be played, he took a suspension for it, which was later reduced. He'll be back on a Golden Boy show in the next month or so.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan how about the Swamp donkey this weekend do you like his chances?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

He's in very tough. If he wins, he's like a real life Rocky.

Brandon (Houston)

What chance do you give Hatton-Khan of eventually coming off?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

95 percent. It'll get done.

Eric (Sac)

Dan, have you heard the reports about Tyson signing with Don King to Fight Holyfield? Tell me this is a joke???

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

I have heard the rumors but have no confirmation. I'm not buying into it but hey -- you never know right? You if it happened it would sell, which is sick but true.

Mike (Rochester, NY)

This week Bill Simmons wrote an article based on a caught-up-in-the-moment-gaffe he made during his last chat. You ever type something during one of these things that you end up regretting soon after? You don't have a lot of time to think about your responses, after all.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Sure, it's the nature of the beast. I type thousands or words each week. Of course there will be something here or there you wish you hadn't written or would have done a better job of writing.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, staying in hartford after your FNF gig tonight or driving straight to uncasville?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Staying over in Bristol then going to the Sun.

Joe (Buffalo)

I have a dilemma DTM, I need your advice and the freaks. Last year on May 2nd I missed the Pacquiao v Hatton fight live because I was at the Kentucky Derby and then out at the after parties. Work pays for it every year, but this year if I go, I miss the May v. Mosley fight. The derby was unbelievable last year. Whyat do I do? go again, or was one year enough?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Dude think about it -- they have the Derby every year and it's Louisville. A fight like Mosley-Mayweather does not happen every year and it's in Vegas. Need I say more?

Curious George (The Bronx)

Dan, are you using a speech to text software? If not, your fingers have got to be KILLING you at the end of some of these chats!

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I just type fast.

The Boxing Prophet (Somewhere between the known and unknown)

The following are about to happen in the near future.1) Roger Mayweather will be involved in a profanity laced verbal attack on Mosely and his trainer.2) John Ruiz will lose a close boring decision dispute the decision and still remain a top contender for the WBA belt.3) Evander Holyfield will have more kids come out of the wood work and still be broke.4) J M Marquez launches his own line of energy drinks - You're in !!

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Post of the day.

Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)

Dan we always hear about how much HBO pay in licensing fees for fights but never for Showtime or ESPN do you have any ideas how much they pay?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

ESPN pays generally in the $25,000-$35,000 for an FNF but has a little flexibility to move up depending on the card. Showtime pays $50,000 for the usual ShoBox but the "enhanced" ShoBox cards, like a Bute-Andrade 1, for example, usually pay in the low six figures. The top of the line Showtime fights, like the Super Six bouts, are seven figure license fees. Some of the lesser Showtime Championship Boxing cards can be in the $500,000 to $750,000 range.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Micky Ward-- hall of famer?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Smoking good weed today I see.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Thank you. What do they say? Any pub is good pub right?

Evan (Detroit)

Is Nazim Richardson the most overrated trainer in boxing? I hear the guy getting a lot of praise and I'm not sure if it's deserved.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Actually, he might be the most underrated trainer in boxing.

Luis (Philadelphia)

Dan, I read a great article by Kevin Lole about the John Ruiz rebirth with his new trainer Miguel Diaz. Do you believe Ruiz will be able to be a whole different boxer and more exciting against David Haye?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

No. Ruiz is who he is. Might he be a little more aggressive? Maybe but old dogs don't do new tricks usually.

Steve (LA)

Who was your vote for fighter of the decade?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Pacquiao.

dantheboxingfan (flanders NJ)

Dan, have been joining your chat for years and wanted to say thanks for posting one of my questions earlier...it made me feel all tingly inside.

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

You may want to see a doctor.

Don (Buffalo)

Dan - what other opponents is Vitali considering?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

The only serious name I have heard is Odlanier Solis at the moment.

Keith H (Seattle)

Staying over in Hartford??? I thought one of the running jokes of the chats is that Hartford is a dump.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Hartford is a dump and I am not staying there.

Josh (Trashville, TN)

How surprised were you to find out T. Cloud signed with Don King? Why would any manager ask their young title-holder to do something so stupid? It seems like a terrible decision IMO.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

I wasn't all that shocked. The rumors had been out there.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Tavoris Cloud sure is making it difficult for anyone to be a fan of his.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Hard to be a fan of a guy who doesn't fight. The crazy thing is he has to fight Johnson anyway as a mandatory or give up the title. So he had an HBO slot on a platter and gave it up. HBO isn't going to go out of its way to create another opening for a fight they didn't love in the first place. Besides, the HBO schedule is more or less booked through the summer.

Robert the Genius (Greater Philly / Southern NJ)

Mayweather bringing up Mosleys wife and divorce shows he has no class

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

That was a bit of a low blow. I didn't hear Shane bringing up his tax problems or past legal problems.

jacob (atlanta)

at the press conference oscar siad there is going to be an incredible undercard of fights on may 1st any word on who that might be

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

I think my definition of incredible and Oscar's might differ. I've heard names like Saul Alvarez, Daniel Jacobs, maybe a Juan Diaz. We'll see.

Bryant (Pitt)

Dan what do you know about povetkin s opponent this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

That Javier Mora got blasted in one by Sultan Ibragimov. This one shouldn't go much longer.

Homer (OH)

Love Child?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Kevin (Grand Rapids, MI)

Dan, I saw Paul Williams was at the Mayweather/Mosley press conference. Did he talk about wanting to fight the winner?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Paul said he would love to fight the winner.

richard (oxford, United Kingdom)

Dan,I've have been telling my friends that mitchell-katsidis will be an absolutely awesome fight, and we shold go watch it live. However, when they ask me to explain what the WBO 'interim' title means, even I as a die hard boxing fan struggles to explain it. suggestions??

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Tell 'em forget the belts. Watch a good fight between two top-10 lightweights.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Paul said he would love to fight the winner.

sammy alsaidi (detroit/queens)

i was watching junior jones vs barrera.why was it rule as a DQ when barrera was out and the ref stopped it?yeah his team went inside the ring but the reason y was because they wanted to stop it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

You answered the question. The ref ruled that when his corner entered the ring, he DQ'd the fighter. Silly, but he went by the letter of the rule.

Jason (Louisiana)

Why didn't espn try to broadcast the klitschko fight against chambers? Wouldn't it be a first for espn to broadcast a world heavyweight title fight live?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Budget.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, any word on what's next for Diaconu?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Have no heard, although a while back I heard there was mention of maybe a fight with Librado Andrade.

JD (DC)

Hey Dan,You interviewed Mosely and Mayweather for a pretty good length of time at the press conference. I saw the quotes in the notebook, but was there anything worth writing an article about or was it just the standard responses?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

I have good stuff from Shane for a future article. Mayweather was no interested in answering any real questions with thoughtful answers.

Sakio Bika (who knows)

I was in line for valedictorian of the Winky Wright School of Business--until this Tavoris Cloud character came along. I want a re-count.

DuD (Pittsburgh)

Seriously does Ring Magazine and espn's top 10 ratings have something against David Tua. It was laugh out loud funny when you rated John Ruiz over Tua, when Tua has a first round KO over Ruiz. Plus please stop comparing other fighters to Arturo Gatti. Nobody is comparable in terms of exiting fights and never will be.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Tua's KO was like 14 years ago. He hasn't done ANYTHING in years. Ruiz has done a lot more in recnt years.

Craig D. (Philly)

Danswoggle, Am I gonna see Vic Darchynian in a fight this weekend? Last time it wasn't even close.

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

His opponent is not well known but not all that bad. You know the drill -- anything can happen. That said, I expect another win for Vic.

Koichi (NYC)

How do you feel about the undercard for Pac v Clottey?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Ill.

Kevin (Wyoming)

Dan, curious as to your reaction to your reported booing at the May/Mosley publicity stop in DC? Did that really happen?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Yes it happened and it was part of my man Kieran's blog.

sammy alsaidi (detroit/queens)

i just watched pac man and Clottey commercial on tv.they said its manny biggest test ever.what you think dan?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

It's a lie. It is not his biggest test.

mark (tampa)

whats next for mike jones

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Three words: Read the Notebook.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,When you're on FNF is there a lot of preparation involved and what does it consist of?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Not too much. I'm up on the news and what is going on. I go over things with the producer about the stuff we definitely will discuss and what we might get to if we have time. I'll have dinner with Brian before the show and we'll talk about the show. The biggest thing is what we will be able to get in with limited time.

Jason (Kitchener, Ont)

Hey Dan the Notebook was awesome this week, it should be a good fight on Saturday! My question has to do with history, where do you rank Lennox Lewis (He is from my home town) in history of the Heavyweights? cheers

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

I have Lennox near the bottom of the top 10 all-time heavies.

Mike (Rochester, NY)

Hey Dan, have you ever looked at a champion like Ivan Calderon and thought: I could beat the living crap out of that guy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Yes. In fact, I have sat with Ivan Calderon in a lounge at the MGM Grand and had that exact thought.

Mark (St. Pete)

What's your take on the fight at Yankee Stadium? Venue sounds cool, even if the fight isn't all that interesting to me.

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

The venue will make it a much bigger even that it should be, sorta like Pacquiao-Clottey being at Cowboys Stadium. That makes a good fight much bigger.

Kelly (Pensacola, FL)

I see these continual Pascal delays costing Dawson paydays that he will NEVER get back. These guys only have some many years of peak earning potential.

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

You're wrong. Dawson was only going to fight twice in 2010. So if he fights in August and November what's the difference between that and fighting in June and October?

Lance (Washington, DC)

Danimalize- I was at the DC press conference Wednesday but didn't get a chance to say what's up. Hopefully one day I can meet the king of the freaks. Anyway, what an electric atmosphere! Do you think Floyd got this type of showmanship learned from his time in WWE?

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

I hope you weren't booing.

Kris Krepps (GR)

Does Brian ever go see fights live?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

When they unchain him from the anchor desk, yes, he gets out to a few fights.

Gallegos (Colorado)

Any progress on a potential Valero/Bradley fight? If so when?

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

There is no progress and there is no fight.

Chris M. (Toronto)

For all the Freaks out there who are hip-hop heads: Drake has been confirmed to rap Devon Alexander out to the ring on Saturday night. "Last name ever, first name GREATEST..."

Joe (Deer Park, NY)

C'mon Dan - I'm willing to be banned - what's the real deal with Tyson's comeback

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

As I said earlier, I do not know the real deal yet. What I do know is that a boxing Web site I never heard of and have never visited reported it with zero attribution.

AAron (Hartford)

I see Sturm doesnt want to fight his mandatory...who is he eying instead ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

It's not that he doesn't want to fight the mandatory (Golovkin), it's that he wants to break with Universum and won't fight him if that company is involved.

Aaron (MI)

Did you see the Tyson comeback report on Fox?? Can we at least get Kevin Rooney to train Tyson? Otherwise, Don King is just trying to steal our money again.

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

The Fox report refers to a boxing Web site that reported it without any attribution.

Alexandre (Montreal)

Hey Dan, there's been reports here that Jean Pascal has a 3 fight deal with HBO, including a rematch with Dawson and another bout ... any truth to this ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Not true.

Idoits who keep not reading the notebook (banishment)

Dan whats a notebook????

Steven (Linlithgow, Scotland)

Do you buy the talk of Pacquiao/Clottey being Manny's last fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

Not for one second. Please.

Brady (Detroit)

Will there be an Escalante-Roman rematch? If not, I hope ESPN brings Roman back for another fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

I doubt there will be a rematch. There is no need. Escalante clearly won and he has bigger and better things to look forward to. As for Roman, I would hope he would be asked back.

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Sir-Chats-A-Lot, it's been awhile since i've been able to get on here bc of work, don't worry tho i've read every chat wrap to keep up...did u miss me?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Not really.

Pete (NYC)

I was extremely impressed with Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. Will we now see him in the mix among the top names at 122/126, JuanMa, Gamboa, Caballero etc? Featherweight has some great young talent all of a sudden.

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

I believe so. He was impressive. He has a good name and he's been getting better and better in recent fights.

Carlos (San Jose, Ca)

Dan, great observation in your blog about how us fans can get close to the stars unlike most other sports. I went to a weigh-in in San Jose last year and got to shake Oscars hand and Have Naziim sign my Margarito-Mosley ticket stub. It was awesome.

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

That is one of the reasons why boxing is so great. The fighters, for the most part, seem to enjoy the contact with the fans and even the media.

JJ (Dallas)

Will you be at cowboys stadium for the pac vs clottey fight

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Yup. Busy couple of weeks. Bristol today, Mohegan tomorrow, home crack of dawn Sunday, out Wednesday very early to Big D.

The Good Doctor Filth (Cleveland)

I have seen the Tyson report on a couple of websites now...each of them seems to be citing another website. There doesn't appear to be a credible source. It just kind of is a he said, he said thing. Unbelievable people would run with a rumor like this.

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

As of now there is no credible source for this.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, not sure when in march you started at espn but happy 5th anniversary. your presence on espn.com makes it more fun to be a boxing fan.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Thanks. The anniversary just passed.

mike (dallas)

Whats Alexanders status w/ HBO post tmrw's fight? And bradley's with showtime, for that matter? Basically Bradley-Alexander can it happen later in 2010? 3 of the 4 major belts likely to be between them.. Fight to make at '40 for my money

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

I am not certain but as far as Alexander goes, I believe HBO probably has a first/last option on his next fight if he wins.

Steve (Brooklyn)

Hi Dan is Golovkin any good ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

Yes. I had him among my top 25 prospects at the end of last year.

Randy (NYC)

Even though JMM/Juan Diaz was fight of the year, JMM figured Diaz out, battered him, and knocked him out. Why a rematch? For what purpose (other than money)?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

(other than money).

Alec (Nashville)

Are you getting close to removing BHop from the Light Heavy rankings, considering he has no real plans to fight 175 anytime soon?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

Ummmm, he fights at 175 on April 3 and he fought at 175 in December.

Keith H (Seattle)

Dan, it disgusts me this Tyson thing is even being reported. Maybe I'm aging myself, but I remember when journalism meant getting the story correctly before publishing. Now with the 24/7 news cycle, it's a matter of getting something out in public first just to have some programming. Thanks for making sure you get it right before you put it out.

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

I agree with you 100000000000000000000000%. It's disturbing but these are the times we live in. All I can do is report the way I taught by experienced journalists I respect. Get it right. That is more important than being first.

Nick (NY)

How many bags of Cash does Don King have?

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

Probably as many as he needs. Best line I ever heard from DK was when he once told me, "If you know how much money you got, you don't got enough."

Fletch (Pittsburgh, Pa)

Since I'm a big Floyd man, and the idiots in Banishment don't understand. Dantasm is hard on Floyd because like the rest of us, he truly wants Floyd to be great (like Floyd THINKS he is). And to do that, you have to challenge him. His best fights were the ones he wasn't a guaranteed win (Corrales, Gatti, Judah, and Hatton come to mind). Dantasm just wants Floyd to but his considerable talents to use instead of wasting them fighting Henry Bruseles and DeMarcus Corley.

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

Damn, you hit it on the head.

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

Not sure what is open to the public and what isn't.

Romeo (DC)

Daniel Jacobs, whats the latest with him?

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

Supposed to return March 27 on the Maidana-Cayo undercard.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Have you ever talked to Don King about his enormous Boxing video collection and whether he'll ever release any of the fights online or on dvd?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

Yes, often. I have encouraged him to do just that.

Joaquin (Dallas, TX)

Where is the Top Rank card on 3/12 going to be held? Schedule says Grapevine, Top Rank site says House of Blues (Dallas), and tickets are nowhere to be found....

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

The fight is at the Gaylord Hotel in Grapevine, apparently just outside of Dallas. You need to call TR or the hotel about tickets. They are not available via ticketmaster.

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat today. Hope you watch FNF tonight. We're on at 10 pm ET (or whenever the college hoops game ends). And make sure you check out today's notebook and this week's blogs. Talk to you next week from Dallas, where I will be for Pacquiao-Clottey. Peace.
