March 4, 3:00 PM ET
Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

Apologies, but need a 15-minute delay. Will be here at 3:15.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Apologies all. Combo computer issues and finishing touches on a Steve Slaton column you will see in a while. Here I am.

Travis (Houston)

How do you see things ending up between the Texans and Kevin Walter? Do they make him an offer, or let him walk? If they let him walk, who gets your vote for the #2 spot? Jacoby Jones or David Anderson?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

All depends on the outside market for him, I expect.

Bruce (C Springs)

What would happen if a RFA player would choose not to sign a tender offer?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

He's got no alternative. He'd kind of sit and rot. Wouldn't be playing and couldn't earn the year(s) he needs to get to UFA.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Hey Paul, great entry about Scaife and his tender. Any chance there are suitors for his services? Could the Titans get a 2nd or 3rd for him? And who might the suitors be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

One pick maybe, but I doubt it. Definitely not two. He's overpaid and everyone knows it, and wouldn't take less money.

Tom Coughlin (NYC)

Kuharsky, if you're not 5 minutes early to the chat, you're late!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Sorry sir. I tried to explain above, but I know you aren't into excuses. But hey, I'm not at Giants Stadium, you're in my chat, right?

Alex (the Boro)

% chances that any of the AFC south teams surprise us and jump on some free agents in the first wave? I don't see the Colts or Titans doing it, but I don't know about the Texans or Jags. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

I think you are correct. I think Houston and Jax could do a little, but I'm still not sure it'd be early. The big dollars are early. The guys they could chase aren't the big dollar guys, not the first wave I don't think.

Randy Phillips (Mt.Vernon)

As a devout Titans fan I was wondering with this draft being so deep should the Titans trade down to get an extra pick, or if CJ Spiller should happen to slide to the Titans spot I believe they need to draft him and use him as Harvin is used in Minnesota. CJ and CJ could be very lethal.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

There is way, way, way too much talk about trading down. To trade down, you need someone who wants to to trade up. I just asked Gary Kubiak about this. He said he's been in many draft rooms when his team went on the clock and they said wouldn't it be great to trade down. But if the phone isn't ringing, you've got to get a name on the card.

Tom (IL)

Do you see the Colts looking at any free agent offensive linemen? I know the Colts, under Polian dont traditionally do anything during the free agency, but other than free agency im not sure how they plan on upgrading the offensive line. I haven't heard anything special about any offensive linemen past the first round of the draft.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

Colts can't bring in a free agent until they lose one, under the Final Eight rule. So even if they wanted to change stripes, they couldn't.

Chris S. (Knoxville, TN)

Paul, who is running the NFL? Seems like sometimes they just don't do the obvious solution to an issue. They have problems with the probowl...so they move it back to Hawaii, but keep it before the SB...are they still going to make participants travel all the way out there to be part of it...then fly back to rejoin a team? Then the over time rule change idea? Well...we'll let the other team have a possession...unless they score a TD? C'mon...its just ridiculous.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Of course they aren't flying SB players to Hawaii to wave. It's a stupid change though, to play it ahead of the Super Bowl. Overtime is a discussion. We're going to bash them for discussing something?

Hyperbaric Chamber (Miami)

Do you miss me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

At least I've been able to resume smoking with you out of my life. (Kidding.)

Errol Mizell (Jacksonville)

Who do you think the Jaguars will try and acquire when free agency starts or have you heard anything about who they are looking at?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

I'd love to see them chase Kyle Vanden Bosch. But he's probably getting more money somewhere than they'll pay.

Randy Phillips (Mt.Vernon, IL)

I just have a gut feeling that my beloved Titans might shock some people in the free agent market, and I really believe that Bulluck will be back and Thornton may be the odd man out.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

No reason to make a move with Thornton before the end of camp, he gets no money between now and then. Your gut says Bulluck returns. Insiders say he doesn't. Should I go with your gut? I think neither will be on the 2010 Titans.

Don (Alabama)

Sorry for the long lead in but.....The Colts have alot of restricted FAs. It's my understanding that if no tender offer is made, a restricted FA becomes like an unrestricted agent....correct? If so, are there any notable RFAs for the Colts that you think they won't tender?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

The notable ones they will tender. The crappy ones they man not.

Brian (Virginia)

Do you think the Titans will finally stand behind Vince Young this year and start to build the team around him and Chris Johnson?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Question is inside out. Will he finally stand behind them?

Travis (Jax)

Do you see joe haden falling to the Jaguars? Would he be a valuable addition or does his combine workout scare you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

His combine workout does not scare me. If he's there at 10 he's intriguing, but it depends on who else is there.

Little Johnny (Air Traffic Control Tower)

Hey there PK, you are cleared for arrival. Sounds like you had some turbulence getting in.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

Thanks champ. Say hi to daddy when you visit him in prison.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

PK,The Titans have shown they don't mind using a valuable receiver to return kicks. That being said, don't you think Nate Washington would be a better choice than Britt, since he's the 2nd fastest on the team behind CJ.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

It takes more than speed to be a returner, don't you think? Washington had questionable hands but you want him fielding kicks?

Curtis Granderson (spring training)

Paulie, sorry about going 0 for 2 in my Yankee debut. I promise to step it up a notch. Just don't remind them I can't hit lefties.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

You played a regular season game today a month ahead of schedule?

Peyton Manning (recuperating)

Paul, thank you for sending the Get Well Soon balloons for my surgery. However, next time, please protect my privacy by sending them addressed to my pseudonym, Awesome McRocketArm.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Gotcha. Get well soon.

Jake (10,000 ft up in the Rockies)

PK: I read your blog daily for Titans insights. But I have a question/comment this time. Can you run a possible scenario(s) for me that we release/trade Scaife,Crumpler,Mawae,Bulluck,KVB and White for cap space and draft picks? What is the possibility we get rid of white and/or scaife for a couple second rounders?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

There is no cap space issue as there is no cap. I don't believe White or Scaife would get them a second rounder.

Shaun (TN)

As a Titan's fan, I am a little worried about our LB. Bulluck is gone, Thornton may be, and Tulloch is a restricted FA. I am sure we will do everything to keep Tulloch, but can Keglar and McRath pick up the two outside positions?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

No. They need another guy to play in front of Keglar. Will find one in FA or draft. Hope FA so they aren't too young there.

Danny (Canada)

Why don't some sportswriters understand that the Colts never spend big money on free agents? It bothers me to see Dansby or Sproles heading to Indy??? headlines. It leads to a moment of false hope followed by instant recollection of the Colts policy.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

That's why you need to be here, where we understand.

dave (Vegas) [via mobile]

do you think the jags have any players they can dump for a 2nd or 3rd found pick? And of so who.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

When you're dumping your garbage, do your neighbors come over and offer you things of value for it?

Kody Hansen (Bristol, Wisconsin)

Why won't the jaguars go after a big time player in the FA? Like Peppers or even WR Marshall(which we really need)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Because they are struggling financially (see ticket sales). Also, Peppers has a questionable motor and Marshall has all kind of issues. Why do you think given a giant contract those guys are guarantees? I do not understand your thinking.

Travis (Jax)

Each year some friends and i try to go to one away Jaguars game. 3 years ago it was New Orleans, 2 years ago it was Chicago. Last year we couldnt make a trip. We play the NFC east this year as well as the AFC west. Which game/city would you recommend?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

If I'm you, I go to New England or Seattle.

Jeff Fisher (Nashville)

PK, I recently said LenDale is definitely part of our future plans. Do you believe me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

Nope.

Maurice (NEW York)

WHO will be the titans 2nd corner on the depth chart if we all kno harper is done??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

Right now? McCourty. Which is why they have to get someone.

Ian (CT)

Colts again this year? don't you think covering the AFC south is boring?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

It's in the NFL right? Covering one of the great QBs of all-time is hardly boring. You prefer the NFC West?

Leigh Bodden (bags packed)

I'm a relatively young, phyiscal corner still in my prime and not likely to break the bank. Can you make sure Reinfeldt has my phone number?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

He may leave the office at 4:30 today.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Any chance the Titans can find another linebacker late in the draft (Tulloch and McRath) to come in and be a starter? Any ideas on who taht would be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

I'd want a veteran to be the third in that group.

Billy (LA)

Chances of the Jags moving to LA?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Not any time soon.

Will (DC)

What's going to happen in NY with Leon Washington returning and Greene finishing strong last year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Everyone is heading to two backs. There are enough touches for both.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

AP says Colts won't tender RFAs Tim Jennings and Aaron Francisco, both DBs.

Jon (Hawaii)

What is the status with Darren Sharper? And why are the Bears pursuing Rolle and not Sharper?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

How do we know who the Bears are pursuing when free agency doesn't start until tonight? Rolle is a lot younger. Sharper's status. Will be a UFA tonight.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Any chance Jason McCourty has developed as much as his brother Devin, in the last year, or is Devin better than he is? Maybe being in the NFL it didn't show as much as if he was in college another year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Devin is better. Maybe Jason develops. Too early to say.

Chris (MT)

Even with the free agency rules, couldn't the Colts go after a player like Gaither? Seems like the 31st pick would be a small price to pay if they could get him signed to a contract.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

I agree here. If they think he could play in their scheme, they won't find as good a player at 31. But he's certainly costlier contract-wise.

Bobby (Metarie LA)

Are there any FA RBs that the Texans will target?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Could look at Chester Taylor or Thomas Jones, if market is thin and prices are low.

Tim Tebow (Florida)

Am I going to be a Jaguar??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Nope.

Uncle Jesse (West End)

Are you ready for it? The World Cup is less than 100 days away. I think the US makes it out of the first round this time, what about you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Should win two of three. Looked bad yesterday.

Wayne Weaver (Jax)

Might wanna try telling Travis to make sure to hit all the home games before we worry about away games.....and maybe use all that travel and ticket money to buy a couple more seats for his buddies...we need to fill em up or well ship out!!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Mr. Weaver, I thought this deserved some volume sir.

Matt (IN)

I am volunteering to pack Tim Jennings stuff and drive him to the airport right now!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

He's gone. No need to give him a ride.

Liam (Denver CO)

Isn't the tender stuff a little odd? I mean, a first-rounder for St. Louis or Detroit is a lot different from a first-rounder from Indy or New Orleans, in terms of value.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Well that's not a secret. Everyone knows it and acts accordingly.

Don (Alabama)

As people have stated, I know the colts typically don't sign non-colt free agents. To clarify the rules as they stand, if a RFA is non-tendererd and signs with another club, does that constitute losing a free agent which would allow the colts to sign someone if they broke tradition?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

No. You've given up his rights by not tendering him.

Zac (TN)

AFC South GMs are a pretty conservative group. Which one is most likely to make a surprising move this offseason?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Rick Smith.

Mark (Memphis)

If you were in Polians shoes what would you do with the #31 pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

OT if there is a good one.

Jason (Bmore)

Can you give us your team and round for the Tebow prediction?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Someone will take him late third, early fourth. No idea who. Not Jags.

Rod Hood (parts unknown?)

What about me? All I did was come in the lineup and make plays!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

You're better than any alternative on the roster, but you're a UFA so you'll have other options. Fans went a little too crazy over you.

Zac (Trainer's Room)

Coming off of the shoulder injury, what are the expectations for Jason Jones next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

Much better, much tougher play.

Travis (Jax)

Who in the division would you recommend visiting/seeing the Jaguars play on the road? How do the stadiums/citys compare to some of the other divisions?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

All three are nice. Nashville on a fall day is great. Indy is very cool and right in the vibrant part of downtown. If it's Houston tailgate. Can't go wrong.

Fitz (Jacksonville)

Paul, I think the Jaguars should take the best NFL prospect out of Jacksonville this draft... CJ Spiller. I know they have MJD but in today's game you need 2 RB's and he has the chance to be a game changer, even if #10 might be high for him.. thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Can he rush the passer?

ben (jacksonville)

Who do you think the jags can trade with in the draft to get a 2nd round pick and a late 1st

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

You can't determine things like this before you see who needs what and who's available at 10.

Gene Smith (Nashville)

My name is Gene, not Rick.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Your counterpart in Houston's name is Rick. Rick Smith. Smith is a popular name. You cannot have it to yourself. Even among GMs in the division.

Travis (Jax)

Do teams look ahead at all to next years draft? The reason i ask is because people are wanting the Jaguars to draft a QB to develop behind Garrard but the class this year is very weak. Next years QB crop looks better with Jake Locker,Casey Keenum, Ryan Mallet, and Christian Ponder (my darkhorse for the jaguars)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

It's factored in some to their thinking, sure.

Peter (Nashville)

Do you think the Titans will be able to pick up a 2nd via RFA?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Don't understand the question.

Nate (Indy)

In your mailbag, you sardonically asked readers to name any big time free agents Bill Polian has brought in to the Colts. There are two: Corey Simon and Adam Vinatieri. Vin has been a success story, but he's a kicker - as transparent a position as there is on any football team. Simon looked good after one year of a big contract, but then broke down and the Colts had to pay him to sit for a number of years. Is the Corey Simon experience the biggest reason that Polian fears the free agency market?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

No he doesn't fear it. He's set up his team to make it unnecessary.

John (Nashville)

Do you any blockbuster signings right away, kind of like last year with Haynesworth? Maybe Sproles?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Peppers.

Matt (IN)

Off topic...college hoops. Who's your team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Columbia and Vanderbilt.

Patrick Paz (Nashville.)

Would you be so bold as to make a very early prediction on an AFC South team to contend this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

No I won't. I have no idea what the teams will really look like yet. Hard for the Colts not to be favored.

JB (TX)

Speaking of OT, what do you think of a potential change? I say keep it the same, and if your D can get a stop you deserve to lose. Also where does a safety factor in (remember Titans/Bears '05 I believe)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

I say keep it the same. They say the moved kickoff and the easier PI calls make it too easy to get into FG range. Well, consider that when you're moving the kickoff and changing the PI calls.

Finley (via mobile)

Sorry I'm late, I had some pressing matters with the Finley Kuharsky for Governor Committee. What did I miss?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

What did WE miss?

Topher (Houston)

What do you think of the Texans letting Dunta walk when DB's are their biggest need going into the draft?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

I think he's a bit overrated and it would have been awfully hard to pay him over $10 million for 2010.

Teri (Nashville)

Paul, I'm a crazy Titan fan losing hope in a spectacular run to the Super Bowl, ever. Is there any chance we are better this year than last?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Don't see it. Major leadership void.

Kelley (Cincy)

Can Vince and CJ single handedly lead the titans to the playoffs?P.S. why Vandy? My dad went there. so go vandy

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Lived near campus for years, now not far. Love Memorial, love Stallings.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

What do you hate worse? Me asking about other team's underachieving CB's (Trufant, Rogers, Hobbs) for a trade scenario with the Titans or Tim Tebow to Jacksonville questions?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Tebow, easily.

Reinfeld (phone)

I'm on the phone getting ready to offer the Chargers LenDale and our 3rd for their second. Deal?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Hardly the worst proposal that's been thrown around in here.

Usain Bolt (Jamaica)

Chances of me getting signed by an NFL team as an RB/KR?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Don't think you're looking.

Zach (Ind)

Do you see the Colts bringing back brackett and bethea? And if not who would they replace them with because brackett is the captain for the colts defense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Yes, I see them both back. They are different. As of midnight, Brackett can leave. Bethea is restricted and can't go anywhere if the Colts don't let him. And if they let him, they get a first rounder in exchange for it.

Fitz (Jacksonville)

Paul obv the jags need a pass rusher but if he's not BAP then why reach? In a perfect world the jags would trade down but if CJ is a big time play maker how do u pass him up?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

How about somebody else wants him and thinks he's worth 10 and you swap with them?

Guy (Round Rock, TX)

That piece on Slaton coming out today? Want to check that out!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Yes, soon.

Aaron (York, Pa)

I noticed the jaguars havent tendered any of their free agents. Does this mean they dont think anyone will sign them, they dont want to sign them, or they just dont think they meet the financial tender value?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

They signed Ellison today, so no tender needed. Other guys could still be tendered til midnight.

Simon Kuharsky (via mobile)

I'm homeless and I'm standin in the kitchen (in other words, I'm at hard at work on this bottle)

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

You and CJ with the no home deal?

Vic Ketchman (press room)

You should get a Tebow scanner for all those Tebow questions. Its worked wonders for me

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

How much did it/he/she cost?

Nate (Indy)

Why is nobody talking about the "Curse of Vinatieri"? In modern Superbowls, New England is 3-0 with him, 0-1 without him. Indianapolis is 1-0 with him, 0-1 without him. I don't think there's anything to this, but if I were a superstitious man, I'd sign Stover to a one-year contract to handle regular season duty, and save Vin for the playoffs.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

You just talked about it. Trust me, it's not going to catch on.

Robbie (IN)

Starting in the playoffs the Colts really looked like they had finally established a running game. That being said what do you think the chances are that they have a 1000 yard rusher next year? And whom do you think it will be if so?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

I think Addai is fine. I want them to block better for him.

Randy Phillips (Mt.Vernon)

Insiders also say that Dunta Robinson may end up in Tennessee. What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

I disagree with them.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

What will the Titans answer be to the return game? Use another late round pick on a guy from a small school that probably won't work out?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

Let's hope not.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Which College Football Player that is on the 2010 NFL Draft board do you think would be a perfect fit for the Indianapolis Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

I think Suh is the best player. So I say Suh, But it's kind of a silly construct, no? He goes top three and the Colts draft 31st.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

What do you think about San Diego pulling a 180 and tendering Sproles with a 1st and a 3rd giving him $7M+ for next year? Surely they plan on trading him and not actually paying him that much, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:09 PM)

Well how would they know they can trade him for sure when he's going to want $7 mil plus long term from his new team? Surprising turnabout.

Rob (Orange Park, FL)

The Jaguars' "fuel gage" to monitor ticket sales was updated today. Between season ticket renewals & new ticket sales, the Jags sold over 2200 tickets this past week. I'm thinking that the civic drive is really taking hold!! Have you been monitoring this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:10 PM)

What do we know about season ticket renewals?

Brandon (Jackson)

How does this whole tender thing work? Do teams get a certain amount of tenders they can use? For instance Elvis Dumerville got what a 1st and 3rd tender and Bethea got a 1st. Shouldnt the colts of placed more on Bethea since he a huge part of their defense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:11 PM)

Only restricted free agents get tenders -- it's the device by which you give them a new contract in the time between now and them getting to unrestricted. Bethea is great. But to get him, you've got to get him to sign an offer sheet, you have to see the Colts decide not to match, and then you have to give the Colts your first round pick. That's pretty pricey. I don't see him going anywhere.

Matt (IN)

So, does the non-tender of Jennings (thank God) and Francisco probably signal that they want to keep Marlin Jackson around? He is a UFA.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:13 PM)

He's RFA. There are lists everywhere, honest.

ben (jacksonville)

eric berry, c.j. spiller, derrick morgen, dez bryant who do the jags pick if thier there

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:14 PM)

Berry or Morgan.

Guy (Round Rock, TX)

You buy into the strength of schedule analysis? As a Texans fan, it seems pretty unimportant if you can't get many W's in your division.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:16 PM)

Wins in the division are your issue, absolutely.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

In that case, what about the Titan's trading for an average corner that another team in no longer enthralled with? It's not like White, Vickerson, and Scaife aren't at least average players themselves. I just cannot stomach the idea of the Titans brining in another rookie to compete with essentially two 2nd year rookies.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:17 PM)

What's a second year rookie. I'm down on Mouton and McCourty. But they did get a lot of experience and guys make their big jump from year one to year two. They'll check out the restricted possibilities in addition to UFAs I am sure.

Rob (Orange Park, FL)

As of today, the renewals are at 9,281 (or 33%). The 30/30 Plan (30 games paid for over 30 months) offer ends 03/31/10, so I expect a flurry of renewals over the next few weeks as people get tax returns & want to lock in the price for the next 3 years. The 2200 tickets this week were a combo of renewals

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:17 PM)

I'm not excited about 33 percent renewals. When's a deadline?

Roger Goodell (via mobile)

PK, your sarcasm meter is off the charts today.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:19 PM)

I am surprised. I really felt I toned it down today.

Uncle Jesse (West End)

Does the (most likely) loss of Mawae hurt the Titans or will they be the same?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:19 PM)

They're letting him go, not having him stolen away. Kills them for leadership. But Leroy Harris can play.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:22 PM)

Well folks, that flew by. Please check out the Slaton column, up soon, and check out my advice for executives in dealing with free agents, posted earlier. Check me out on Twitter and Facebook too. Have a good rest of the week.
