Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Hello everyone. Thanks for coming. Keep the questions coming, I'll get to as many as I can."How's it hanging, fellas"?

Randolf (Manila)

What's wrong with the Celtics? Old legs?

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Yep, pretty much. Losing PP isn't good either.

steve (battle creek, mi)

sent a question to you on facebook about b. jennings being ROY, my arguement is he is best player on his team leading them to playoffs, you compared him to jason terry and eddie house, i didnt really get that comparison. i think curry and evans are very good rookies, but jennings is good and WINNING!

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Are they winning because of him, or in spite of him? He's going to be good, but he's not been good since mid-December.

Rod (Orlando)

Are Cleveland and Orlando the only Finals possibilities from the East? Can Hawks beat either in a 7-game series?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

I don't think the Hawks can take either team. Cavs Magic is where it's at.

JJ (ATL)

Do you think there's a chance that Big Z goes anywhere but Cleveland?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Nope.

Noah R. (Miami Fl)

Wade wearing a bulls jersey or Wade wearing a heat jersey next to a max guy in miami, what seems more likely at this point.

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Wade County.

Max (Brooklyn, NY)

You've been complimentary of Mike D'Antoni in past chats. The other night, a Cleveland reporter claimed he's now the "most overrated coach in sports, not just basketball". Did he ride the coattails of Nash, or is he genuinely a good, creative coach?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Both. Every coach rides great players. But I still believe in Mike.

Tyler (Utah)

D Will has been shooting poorly lately. Missed two key free throws the other night badly. He hurt his writs a while back. Is that to blame for his poor shooting as of late?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

it certainly can not help.

ben (new york)

How much better is Lebron than anyone else right now, including Kobe? And the scary thing is his jumpshot is still not as pure/consistent as it seems it can and will be as he works on it some more ditto for his postup game.

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Way better.

Facebook friend (Asia)

Mr. Coach Thorpe, thnaks forr being a friend on fbook. It's cool to be connected to you that way.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

You are welcome. I'm at David B.Thorpe on Facebook and coachthorpe on twitter. Though I won't tweet much until the playoffs, I do get on Facebook once a day or so and answer questions every Friday.

Peter (Bombai)

Who will be the better player in five years Curry or Evans?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Evans is the easy answer. But Curry may be the better winner. Both are fun to watch.

Tyler (Utah)

When is Jerry Sloan going to get the credit he deserves? He takes a bunch of arguable nobodies (minus D- Will and maybe Booz) and has them in the top of the west virtually every year!

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

This might be the year. I agree totally.

warren (florida)

Mr. Thorpe! Thanks for answering my question..... Not saying Beasley needs help, but if he did come to you, what would be three things you'd work with him on?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

I'm not sure. Probably learning how to be a more efficient scorer. Shot fake game. Learning when to post or cut. Stuff like that.

Nate (Madison)

What are your thoughts on the "rebuilding" Bucks? With their defense, do you think they could provide a scare to anyone in the playoffs (assuming they make it)?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

No, but they have been impressive nonetheless.

Terry (Madison)

Do you think the Mavs have a shot at beating Denver in the 2nd round and if so the Lakers in the west finals?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Yes I do.

Andy (Dallas)

Thorpiriffic! John Hollinger is public enemy number 1 in Dallas right now. What are your thoughts on the Mavs chances this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I like them better than he does, but his arguments were strong. As always. I'm hanging with him at the MIT Sports Conference in Boston so we'll talk about it.

Gisupe (Florence)

What is Danilo Gallinari's upside?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Better than Bargnani, not as good as Dirk.

Noah R. (Miami Fl)

miami has beat orlando and hawks 2/3 times so far. any chances they go to game 6/7 in the playoffs if they meet.

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Sure, but it's not likely. But Wade is the ultimate wild card.

Randolf (Manila)

I've heard a lot of hype surrounding John Wall. Is he that good, like if given a choice, would you pick him over CP3?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Not sure how good he is yet, but no way would I take anyone over CP3.

Cameron (UTAH)

Does Wesley Mathews start for the Jazz next year?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Depends on who they draft.

Aaron (Provo, UT)

Which head coach would you hire to babysit your kids for an evening?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

None of them. Although I think Spoelstra would at least play some games with them.

Casper (My Friends Call Me Milky)

Great quote from Me, Myself and Irene....what should the Sixers do, why didnt they just start over and trade Iggy?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Bingo!! I'm sure they tried. They'll run Iggy out next year or this summer.

Scott Brooks (OKC)

How does a guy like you who has no NBA insight get a chat with ESPN? Do you have incriminating photos of Stuart Scott?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

It's a mystery.

Aaron (Provo, UT)

David, do you like Up's chances for best picture at the Oscars?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Does anyone really care who wins? It seems so silly to me.

Corbett (Minneapolis)

Is ESPN planning on changing its name to LebronjamESPN this summer or will it just cut straight to the chase and use The Lebron Channel?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Corbett, please. The guy is phenomenal. Every other media outlet thinks so too.

Tyler (Utah)

Do you think the Jazz have a good shot at making it to the Western Conference Finals?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

No I don't.

Noah (Denver)

Hey Thorpey! Big fan of yours and extremely biased Kings fan here. Looking at the future rankings by Hollinger and Ford, I am fine with Sac being #19, but future players being #20 in the league, really??? I have yet to see an NBA player that can guard Tyreke, and he doesn't even have jump shot yet. Reminds me of another player with the initials LBJ in his rookie year. Plus Landry, Casspi, Greene, Thompson, Hawes (in that order) are all players on their rookie contracts. What say you? Do you agree the Kings have the 20th ranked roster moving forward? I know its just, like, their opinion, man, but still!

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

More or less, yes. But partially because the book is not in yet about any of those young guys, save Evans.

Michael (Sydney, Australia)

If Utah somehow wins the lottery with the NY pick, what do they do with Wall??

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Draft him and trade, trade, trade.

Dan (Delray Beach FL)

As always, a pleasure to read your chats! Even if you give Cleveland the edge in Lebron vs. Kobe, the Lakers win the matchups at every other position except point guard, with Bynum, Gasol, Artest and Odom. Add in Jackson coming up with a defense to prevent Lebron repeating his performance against Detroit. How does Cleveland hope to beat the Lakers?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

It's not a game of one on one.

Marc (Charlotte)

Coach, I'm in a rut. Any advice on how to get out of it it?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Find a reason to smile. Any reason. And keep going back to that in dark times. Then go to work on making life better.

Steve (NY)

Drafts biggest sleeper in 2010 is...

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Matt Bouldin. Maybe the Hobson kid at New Mexico.

warren (florida)

Mr. Thorpe, do you think Durant is better than Melo right now? How bout Westbrook!?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Great question. We're publishing an article today answering that question. What say all of you?

Mike (NY)

Can Brooks and Martin average 45 pts per game for the rest of the year? What about when Yao comes back?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Probably yes for now, not quite next year. But Brooks is amazing. I love Budinger too.

Ricky (Bloomington, IN)

I'll also be at the MIT Sports Conference...what should I say if I come up to you?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Would you like me to pay for your dinner? Just kidding. Just come over and say hi. I'll be the devastatingly handsome man surrounded by bald dudes.

Goude (Charlotte)

With MJ officially running the show in Charlotte now, do we have a better chance at attracting free agents in the future?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Not at all.

Charles (San Jose)

David, how amazing is it that finally given consistent PT and a coach that believes in him that Tyrus is playing great?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

It's not amazing. It's what we expected. Tyrus needs a strong coach, and Vinny never had a chance with him. In 5 years, if Vinny is still going strong, I bet the two would like each other a lot.

Patrick (Philly)

Sixers get the #1 pick (John Wall) - can he play with Holiday?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

It would not work. They'd move Holiday.

Josh (Austin TX)

If you had your pick as of today to take a player for the next 10 years, would it be Durant or LBJ and why?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

LBJ. Better all a round.

Matt (Fort Collins)

Just so we're clear, you don't think Utah has A SHOT at beating Pho/OKC/SA/or Port in the first round and they don't have A SHOT at beating DAL/DEN or LA in the second round? Not A SHOT. That's what you're saying. Methinks your credibility is sinking. I read every week and every week I shake my head.

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Correct, as of today, they do not have a shot at making the Finals. That's my opinion. You are welcome to yours.

Greg (Austin, TX)

Hey David, how good are the Hornets rookies, really?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Collison is special. Thornton is very good.

Nick (Providence)

I think your short answers and stupid opinion on the Celtics having no shot against Orlando and Cleveland make you unqualified to host a chat.

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

I think a team who loses to the Nets at home and has been struggling for awhile does not have a chance to beat those teams in a series. My credibility might have been lost when I picked Boston to win the east in October. But they are just not up to it, physically.

Bill (Dayton)

Thorpe, what is your opinion on the rule that allows a player to be bought out and then re-sign with their old team 30 days later?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

It's fine with me.

Geauxdee (Houston)

do you think the rockets make a splash in FA and do you think we get to keep the draft picks from NY

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Houston is a great sleeper team for someone like Bosh. They have an amazing offense and a bright future with those picks.

Paul (ttown)

"It's not a game of one on one." Uh... Please elaborate cause i'm pretty sure that the better the individuals the better potential of the team? Unless you feel like going against John Wooden... just sayin.

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Not quite. The pieces all have to fit together, on both ends.

jb (Toronto)

just read your article on Melo and Durant. Great read, but how can you call Durant and Melo equals in terms of scoring? Melo can get down low and get nasty with the big boys. KD can't. That's got to count for something.

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Agreed. If this was a head to head matchup, Melo would win that category 10 to 9. But on a scale of 1-10, both are 10's as scorers. Make sense?

Warren (Florida)

Id take Melo right now, and its funny cus they have a similar game.... besides Durants "Larry Birdlike" range. Melo can shoot the 3 too. Melo has a better low and mid post game... which are important for a SF. And stats have shown that Melo is at or near the top of late game shot %. I GO MELO!

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Maybe on offense, but overall?

Devin (Miami)

In the last ten years who was the player you were most wrong about?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

I'll have to think about that. But I'll say this-I did not like Budinger in June, and I love him now.

Phillip (LA)

Hey David,Do you find it funny when people think musicians are great writers/poets but have never actually read real writers like Faulkner and Pynchon?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Not at all. Art is a personal thing. Don't get snooty Phillip!!

chris (ct)

I'm back....And I still think you're a Homer like everyone else at LebronSPN for thinking Lebron at 0 championships is a better player than Kobe and his 4 rings..You'll eat you're own words the first week of July Thorpe.P.S. Your chats make me sick, and you're dead to me!!

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Thanks for the kind words Chris.

Aaron (Provo, UT)

Which baseball player would be a great fit in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Carl Crawford.

mendel (Korf)

Thorpe can you settle a debate for me? My friends all say the heat must make the playoffs in order to keep Wade here. My logic is this season is lost already and Wade knows its all about 2010, so why not try for a lottery pick and either luck out or trade both picks for a chance at wall or turner! That seems like a better bet at keeping wade!

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Wade is smart enough to measure the future without looking backwards.

Pat (Providence)

How would Tyreke and Durant have played together if OKC had drafter him over Harden?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

They'd be good. Not great.

brian (paradise)

Steph Curry will have a greater career than tyreke bet me , all you people that say tyreke is so much have never watched steph , steph dropped a near triple double on him he carved him up on numerous occasions and steph wasnt starting till later in the year if he had been starting at the beginning of the year his points would at least at 19 a game

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

You may be right. But I have watched both, a lot.

Denis (Bangkok)

Would an off-season trade where Wilson Chandler goes to the T'Wolves, Darren Collison goes to the Knicks and Ricky Rubio to the Hornets make sense for the teams involved?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

So the Wolves trade Rubio for Chandler? Um, no.

Terry (Madison)

In the last ten years who was the player you were most right about when you thought they would be a huge bust?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

It's a long list Terry. :)

Mike (Delaware)

Is Steph Curry already the best pure shooter in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

No. But he's in the running, right?

Chris (Beasley Fan)

Hey David, love the chats, for a team that struggles so much to score (outside of D-wade) can come up with any reason as to why beasley is always on the bench in crunch time?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

I don't think his coach trusts him on defense.

Mike (Dallas)

Hey Thorpedo, I was just wondering your take on Point Differential (Hollinger in love with it) and if you think its a major stat when analyzing a team? Is it better than lets say a road win against a top tier team?(Hollinger seems to think so)

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

I rarely argue with John on that kind of stuff. I think his data is deep on that. Football and baseball look at it too.

cj (Los Angeles)

Hey David, hope everything is good with you....How about Ron artest Defense lately, now that he has dropped 10 pounds, what do you think

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

I think he looks great. Didn't realize he los that much. It can only help.

Fred (London)

Is it only me who thinks its really sad that TD is having a phenomenal season, the best PF in the game right now (in my eyes him & Bosh are pretty much joint 1st) and is on a team that won't even challenge for the title?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

He's absolutely incredible. Amazing. He might be my favorite player in basketball.

Mike (Chicago)

Why does home court advantage mean so much? It's not like baseball where the playing area differs. Shouldn't pros be able to block out crowd noise?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

It's not just the road team struggling, it's also the home team playing better.

Kurt Rambis (MIN)

Do you think Laimbeer and myself can get through to Darko?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I actually do.

Sea Bass (Phoenix)

How do you think Nic Batum is warming up to the NBA game after his 45-game injury? What is his potential?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Wow! He looks to be an excellent starter on an excellent team.

Travis (Texas)

Can the Rockets make a push for the playoffs or will they fall short?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

It's going to be tough. Ariza and Lowry still out. Think about this-they play the Kings tonight, who could start a 2 and a 3 who are taller than Houston's 4 and 5.

Lucas (Boston)

Okay David, I need to settle this debate. Overall, who is better, Brandon Roy or Kevin Durant.

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Can I clear my head from the Durant vs. Melo piece I just wrote?

Robert (Orlando)

Is David Lee terrible on defense because he's a terrible defensive player or is it because he's playing out of position?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I've always believed that an individual defender's ability is wrapped up in the overall success of failure of his teammates and their strategy and execution. So I don't hold Lee accountable for much right now.

jimmy (seattle)

russell westbrook has been on an absolute tear as of late. With Green, Westbrook, and Durant leading the way, where do you see the Thunder in the next couple of years?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Contending for a ring.

Mike (Dallas)

Thorpemeister, If you where Rick Carlisle, what would you do with the Mavericks backup point guard position? They don't want to play Roddy B b/c they say he is too turnover prone, but then again, he is way better than JJ Barea, on both ends(especially D). It seemed to work out with Lawson in Denver, what gives?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

I'd play Roddy and live with the results.

George (Philadelphia)

Who would you give a max contract to? Amare, Boozer, or Johnson depending if the elites are already taken.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

None.

Evan (PDX)

Nic Batum drops 31 two games ago, then 21 against the Griz. He should be mentioned as a guy who can do everything, right? And where is he on your last Sophomores article? He has a better future than most of the guys you picked ahead of him.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

He was injured and not part of the discussion last time. I'll feature him next time.

Heath (Timor-Leste)

Sleepless might over here, but I'm finally catching your chat live. Don't even have a question really- just wanted to say that I think you are great for ESPN and for basketball, and I'll chat you up one day on Facebook eventually.

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Thanks Heath. Get some rest dude.

Doug (Hoboken)

How do you feel about this comparison - Westbrook is the next Gary Payton?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

I feel awful about it. Westbrook is totally different on and off the court. Sam Presti may have just gagged.

David (manhattan)

Thorpedo is daryl Morey the best GM in the league and are we going to have an influx of Moneyball GMs similar to baseball in the near future?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

he's great, like some others. We already have a pretty split field, with some GM's being guys of the digital age and others still in the analog world. What's funny is the analog guys think the digital guys are frauds. Which is why we see fleecings.

Raj (Philadelphia)

Is Jeff Green really a sufficient 3rd wheel on a title team? I don't really see him having improved since last year, and his plus minus numbers have been consistently awful since his rookie year. Do the Thunder need to upgrade from him at PF??

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

It's starting to look that way, though a major upgrade at center would help him a lot too.

Aaron (St. Paul)

What is your opinion of Kevin Love?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

He's fantastic.

Alex (New York)

Why is it important for players to lose weight? You can have a little fat and well-conditioned, right? As long as you're not tiring out, the extra weight gives you a little more to bang with down low, no?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

No. The game is so much about movement. Lighter is better, within reason.

Chad (Auburn Hills, MI)

David, I just sent you a friend request on FB. Your chat with Ryen Rusillo was completely engrossing, great stuff man!If you're ever in Michigan let me buy you lunch.

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Ryen is the best. And thanks. Instead, can you meet me in Boston?

JD (VA)

I feel like this question would be best answered by you. Which team in the league has the best strength and conditioning staff and what makes them the best?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Denver's is great. A lot of them are good. But I'll say this-Kevin Martin had two dunks the other night. It's his first multiple dunk game since he hurt his ankle in November of 2008. Coincidence?

tyler wright (lancaster pa)

melo is the best player in the game right now everybody just keeps over looking him just like they over looked alex english when he played for the nuggets

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Tyler, take a nap. When you wake up, you will feel better.

bob (chi)

If you were Bosh, would you consider OKC next year?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Do they pay state taxes in Oklahoma?

Sam D (NY)

The Celtics went from being the worst to the best team in one year by acquiring KG and Ray Allen. Are the knicks capable of this transformation?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Yes.

Andrew (Toronto)

Regarding your Oscars comment, keep in mind some might think this sports chat is silly.

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Yes but we're not awarding anything. The Oscars is a way to promote movies and actors, and make money. As long as you understand that, knock yourself out. But don't get caught up in who wins.

Don (NYC)

Yo Thorpy .....check out some of these rebound numbers last night from a few "3s" ....Artest ....no boards in 28 minutes. Pierce, one board in 29 minutes. Granger, NO boards in 30 minutes. If you play 5/8s of a game, shouldn't you at least stumble into a loose ball once in a while?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Never take much from one game. Check the overall stats.

Otis (Orlando)

If I could pair Dwight Howard with CP3 would the Magic be the team to beat for years to come???

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Of course. Scary good.

Tommy (Orange Park, FL)

Have we ever seen two physical freaks at the PG position at the same time like Westbrook and Rondo? Unbelievable rebounders, double figure assists (Westbrook has been there for a month now), destructive one on one defenders

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Add Rose to that "freak" category.

Don (NYC)

Is Paul Pierce the worst offensive rebounding front-court player in the NBA? did you know that numbers say exactly that .....!

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

You have to consider the overall plan. Is PP getting back so Rondo can crash the glass?

Josh (MPLS, MN)

Wolves land the #1 pick and draft Wall. Who do they trade... Rubio? Flynn? or Both? Is it too greedy to ask that they trade Rubio & Charlotte/Utah's picks to get the #2 pick and take Wall AND Turner? Sorry, I just blacked out from excitement!

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

They should trade Rubio and make Flynn the excellent 6th man I've been talking about all season.

Mike (Dallas)

Thorpe before you close answer one more question i beg you! How Tall are you?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

My license says 6'0". But maybe I've shrunk since high school.

JD (VA)

From your league knowledge, who do you think (or know) spends the most time working on their game, whether it be in the weight room, video room or on the practice courts?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

No one really knows, but Kobe is a beast.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Gotta go. Thanks everyone. Have a great rest of the week and weekend. Be safe!!
