Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:58 AM)

What's going on everyone? Let's get this thing rolling a little bit early.

Pete (StL)

Matt, what are the chances the Rams are able to sign vick or get mcnabb via trade? I think vick is the ideal guy for st. louis' offense, that running game with him and stephen jackson would be deadly

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

I see what you are saying with Vick and I do think he is worth the risk for STL all things considered, but only at the right price. What have we seen from him in the last three years that indicates that he is starting QB material? He wasn't accurate when he was at his best and I don't think going to the clink to two years made him any better of a passer. When you look at his Eagles' snaps, they are pretty unexciting. But, for a 4th rounder? I can buy that. McNabb would obviously be much better. I don't think I would give up #33 straight up for McNabb though. Well, maybe that would be my ceiling. Round 1: Suh. Round 2: McNabb. Round 3 and beyond: Depth that might develop while enhancing the overall competition on the roster. That is a successful draft weekend.

Adam (Gettysburg)

Matt, with Haden's slower than expected 40 time does he possibly slip a little to the 10-15 range or is he still in the 5-10.

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Could happen, but my initial thought is that he will blow out a great time at Florida's Pro Day and no one will think about his time at Indy again. But, if that doesn't happen, yes, I think he very well could fall out of the Top 10...and become a steal. He plays fast.

AD (Oakland)

Do the Raiders take Bruce Campbell at 8, or is that just too easy?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Done deal. Lock it up.

Frank (Coram, NY)

I think getting rid of McNabb would be a bad thing for Philly. Not that I mind I'm a Giants fan.

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

Certainly a risk, but Kolb is ready to see the field. Plus, Philly could use the resources they get for McNabb to improve in other areas. I do kinda feel like shipping him out might be best for the team and player at this point. However, going to STL is prob never best for "Player" in such scenario.

Adam (Gettysburg)

Matt, if the Rams take Bradford or Clausen number one how far does Berry fall?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Not very far at all. Super star who might just be the best player in this draft. Cleveland's pick is the absolute farthest he could drop...and that would be a crime.

sean (indy)

WILL BRACKETT BE ON THE COLTS IN 2010 IF NOT WHAT TEAMS MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN HIM. THANKS

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

I think he is a Colt. Okay, here is my take on Brackett as a free agent. He is strictly a 4-3 MLB. Fine. But, only half the teams now play a 4-3 and just about everyone of them is pretty set at MLB. It is an easy position to find. Plus, Brackett will want big money and when you wright a report on him, he really isn't very physically impressive. Very good football player-no doubt. Maybe the Giants? But in the end, I think he and the Colts realize that he is best in Indy. Plus, no cap this year for Indy, as they usually are butting their heads up against the cap before free agency even opens.

Sam (PA)

Where do you see the Rams going in the future?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

They are a LONG way away bro. Let's see how this draft weekend pans out, but they are pretty short on difference makers and depth. I do think Spags can do a good job, but its the Jimmys and Joes...not the Xs and Os right now. If they leave this draft weekend with both lines pretty secure (I can live with the OL) that would certainly be a good start. If they can land a guy like McNabb, that will certainly translate into more wins in the short term and it doesn't force them to reach for a franchise QB going forward.

The Spelling Police (here)

'Wright a report', Matt? You meant 'write.' Here's your ticket. Stay safe out there!

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

Wow, Can't believe I did that. Those things drive me crazy. Spelling Police, go back and compare my chats to others-I am pretty darn good in that regard. Tell the grammar police to check it out as well. Creative Writing major here!

Sam (PA)

Do you think the falcons can get to the superbowl if they make their defense better?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Very possible. I actually picked them this past year and thought they would have the best O in the league in 2009. That didn't happen though. Turner's long term durability worries me-Curse of 370! I loved Ryan, now I just like him a lot. The OL went backwards in 2009. Of course the D is a huge concern, but they do get P Jerry back, which is big for sure. I worry if Abraham is starting to decline or can he still be a real force if they find another big time guy to put opposite him? Obviously a CB is in order.

TERRI (BOSTON)

COLTS TAKE A------------- IN THE 1ST RD.

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Lineman. Vague enough for you?

mike (detroit)

does anyone care what the lions do EVER?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Not really. I saw improvement though and they have keepers in Delmas, Pettigrew and Stafford from last year's draft, but wow, they still need so much. Getting a stud DT will go a long way though.

Jared (Phoenix, AZ)

Matty Ice, is 28 too high for Terrance Cody? The Chargers interior D-line is awful, and they could really use a big body like that to stop the run. See Jets game

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

I don't think that is too high. I don't love the RBs that will be available at 28 and you can always find a good RB later on in the draft. But, NTs are gold. That is why they are being franchised left and right. Being in Pittsburgh, I am often asked about Hampton/Franchising him/his new contract. The answer is pretty simple. Half the teams in the league now run a 3-4. About half those teams have a capable NT to run the scheme. The other half are in over their heads. Running a 3-4 without a stud NT is just bad business. Therefore, Cody and Williams' stock will soar on DDay.

Mike (Charlotte)

Will the Panthers solve the QB issue this offseason?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Give M Moore every opportunity to be the guy. I really like what I have seen. That team will always be run-first and somewhat QB friendly, which is big. That isn't to downplay the QB position in their O, but I don't think they need John Elway to be a successful team. That being said, it is criminal in how poor that team has been at supplying its QBs with suitable pass catchers. That needs to change.

Craig (NJ)

Hey Matt, do you think the Seahawks are locked in to Clausen @ #6? Who would you target @ #14?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

No, I don't think they are locked in. He would make sense for sure. No question. But once again, they need a little (or a lot) of everything. Dez Bryant? Okung/Baluga/OT? Haden? Certainly could use a pass rushing DE. RB is a need, but I would wait on that one. They really need a lot. Pick the best guy available. It would be very nice to leave this draft with one of the potential franchise QBs though.

Tim (Saginaw, MI)

Some "experts" are saying that McCoy is a better prospect than Suh. What are your thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Well, my thoughts between those two is it depends what you covet. Do you want Warren Sapp/Tommmie Harris? Is your D predicated on getting upfield right now and slipping blockers? If so, McCoy makes more sense. But, I do think Suh is the less risky pick. Two years from now, if both players lose a bit of quickness, Suh will still be much more effective. He doesn't rely on one physical attribute as much as McCoy. Both are tremendous-no doubt. But I lean towards Suh. He's a wrecking machine.

Mike (San Diego)

Man, this thing is slower than a turtle in peanut butter....what gives?

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

Is it? It isn't on my end. Just posting this to see if there is an issue.

Ryan (San Diego)

What about drafting Holliday to replace Sproles? Similar to me and much cheaper

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

Very much cheaper. Sure. In the 5th round or so. Obviously you can't go into the draft though and just assume you can get one specific player that late though. But yes, he would be a great Charger.

brian (paradise)

Forsett had almost 900 more yards of offense than reggie bush the seahawks dont need a running back

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

I love Forsett and want to see him get more opportunities. Jones is just a guy though and I worry about Forsett with a huge work load. Many are projecting the Hawks to go RB very early. I don't agree with that. I am talking about using a 3rd/4th round pick on a 220 lbs banger. You need more than just Forsett.

Jason (Moon Twp)

It may not necessarily be a need, but could you see the Steeler grabbing Spiller if they fell to them, for a change of pace as well as special teams?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

I could and I honestly don't remember where I heard this, but I am very much of the opinion that if ANY team takes Spiller, it is a good move. I am not suggesting that he should go in the top 5 or anything, but he would be an incredibly welcome addition to ANY of the 32 teams. Real potential difference maker. Pittsburgh makes a ton of sense to me. Spiller would be a luxury and yes, PGH has MUCH bigger needs, but imagine that O with him factoring in as well? Live with the OL and use the rest of your picks on D.

baller31 (ur town )

ive heard rumors that randy moss will go to the 'boys. is it true

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

No way. How does NEng allow him to leave? They are VERY light at WR as it stands right now. Think Tom would be real happy throwing to Edelman and Aiken?

Jack (Beantown)

Give us some insight into your thoughts on who the Pats should draft and will draft. Thanks.

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

I feel like this is the off season that they draft/acquire quality moreso than quantity. That goes for free agency as well. They need to stock up on difference makers. I touched on WR, but I see that as a massive need. OLB is even bigger with Banta Cain and Burgess as UFAs. One of them (at least) needs to come back. A young DE makes sense on DDay, but that guy prob won't help much in 2010.

Frank (Coram, NY)

What are your thoughts on the Giants needs in free agency and draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Defense. Actually, check out my Scouts Eye this week-goes into more detail. But they need at least one stud LB talent. Maybe two. But MLB is a bigger need than OLB. Safety is the number one need though. Would like to see them add a tough old school plugger DT too to firm things up against the run. He wouldn't be an every down guy. Even like a Hollis Thomas. But at safety and LB, they simply must get faster. More range. Esp in Fewell's scheme. On O, my wish list is very small. Maybe a developmental lineman if there is value there on DDay.

Eric (Chicago)

Matt, if Tom was throwing to Edelman, Aiken, Welker when he comes back...you know Tom won 3 Super Bowls before Moss got there with the likes of Branch, Troy Brown and other no names...don't think he'd mind all that much to be honest with you.

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

I couldn't disagree more. Moss isn't what he used to be and I am very much a believer in Brady, but those supporting casts (defense in particular) were so much stronger than what the Pats have now. Also, surely they would add another WR to the mix. Does anyone else seeing B Marshall in red, white and blue-even with Moss? Hmmm. Anyways, Moss takes the top off the coverage and frankly, he scores TDs in bunches. He is very much needed. Of course everyone has a price though.

Shane (NOLA)

What should the superbowl champion saints do in the draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Once again, they need to go D. Could really see Weatherspoon to them at #32. A rangy versatile OLB could really help that D. DT is their biggest need though. A plugger. Let Vilma run free. Trade up for Williams from Tenn? If Sharper leaves, I do think Jenkins will be a much better FS than CB, but you would have to bring someone else in for sure. Another DE makes sense too as Grant may not be long for that team.

Paul (Reno, Nevada)

Would it make sense, Matt, for the Pats to go after Vincent Jackson as a restricted free agent? So they lose their 1st and 3rd? They still have multiple second round picks.

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

I have no problem with that. He's dynamite...and worth it for the Pats. Do it.

Benjamin (Albany)

Told ya Panthers would let Peppers hit the open market!

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Doesn't make it right. What am I missing here? Why on Earth would you not Franchise Peppers and call the Pats "Hey Bill. How about you give us your last 2nd round pick for this Peppers guy." "Yeah. Seriously. That is all we want. He is all yours." Doesn't that beat letting him walk away for nothing? It isn't like you have to pay him a nickel until the season starts and he isn't hurting your cap. What am I missing?

Randy (Grove, OK)

Who should the Chiefs take at #5? Now, who do you think they will take at #5? Thanks

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Okung. Can live with Dez Bryant too. Okung.

Robert (Latrobe, PA)

What are your thoughts on Cro? I think if the Chargers thought he had much to offer, they wouldn't be entertaining trade offers for a backup running back and mid-round pick, as rumored.

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Has a ton to offer, but is wildly inconsistent...and he turns down hits. That is a huge problem. They are also high on Cason as a replacement. Cro can be (and has been) great, but with SD's average pass rush, a lot of teams started running double moves at him...and he bit too often.

Chris (NY)

Dan Williams to Mia at 12?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

That seems early, but if you scroll back a bit to the Cody to SD post, that might be the cost of doing business at NT.

Robert (Latrobe, PA)

By my count, the Bills need a franchise QB, two tackles, a pass catching tight end, complement to Lee Evans, two defensive linemen, and pass rushing linebackers. At least. Can you see Buffalo picking first overall in 2011?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Of course I can and if you follow anything I ever say about the Bills, I say almost the exact same thing. They are a nightmare.

Benjamin (Albany)

Randy Moss, Plax, Marshall, Vincent Jackson I swear the only stud WR over 6'5 who hasn't been arrested is Calvin Johnson

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Harold Carmichael? Weegie Thompson? Was Moss arrested? I know he has had some issues, but don't remember that for sure.

Wayne (San Francisco)

The Chicago Tribune reported that the Bears talked with Julius Peppers' agent at the combine. Of course, only the weather was talked about. They got a lot of snow in Indy. Any chance the Bears get caught with tampering or does the NFL only care when the 49ers do it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

I don't have an answer, but my stand on it is why bother to have the rules if you don't enforce them.

Benjamin (Albany)

Fear, I think the Panthers are terrified of Peppers both financially and his lack of consistency so they would just rather wash their hands clean than drag it out longer?. no saying I condone it but I understand

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

How long would it have taken to trade Peppers for a third round pick? Send an email to 31 other teams. We are trading Peppers to the first team that offers us a draft pick in the Top 75 (or whatever). Something that is WAY below market value...but also WAY better than nothing at all.

Eric (Chicago)

Since when is it tampering talking to an agent. 49ers actually talked to Briggs...BIG DIFFERENCE!

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

Is it? Is it?

Jason (Moon Twp)

Weegie!

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Weegie. How about that call for all you old school Steelers fans?

Robert (Latrobe, PA)

Moss ran over a traffic cop for no apparent reason. All around class act.

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Oh yeah. Not nice.

Robert (Latrobe, PA)

In the past few drafts, the Rams have passed on Jay Cutler, Matt Ryan, and Mark Sanchez. I'm not saying that they should take a QB simply because of this, but if Bradford or Clausen emerges as a legitimate top 3 pick, shouldn't the Rams consider it? How many times can they pass on a potential franchise QB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

They have to consider it. If he is close to the DTs, you take the QB. But, what we don't know yet, is just where is Bradford. Medically. Arm strength. Read the Double Coverage that Mike Sando and I just did. He posted it about an hour ago. Goes into detail on that subject.

Ben (Baton Rouge, La)

Would the Bears be making a mistake to sign Peppers to a lucrative deal? Similar to what they did in getting Cutler, i.e., a bust?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

I am still behind the Cutler deal btw. But, they need a lot and don't have the draft picks to get the horses they need this year. And...the decision makers there are on the hot seat. And without horses, we all know what will befall the Bears' decision makers. Put your houses up for sale. So...you overspend and do things that you usually wouldn't. But, I do like the fit. Let Marinelli coach him up.

Chris (santa barbara, CA)

Yeah remember Moss "hitting" a metermaid in Minny!

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Not nice.

Noah (Philly, PA)

HUGE mistake for anyone to sign Peppers to a long term deal. He has 2, maybe 3 years left in him. Sign him to a 2 year if anything, dont invest in the guy

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

He isn't going to sign a two year deal. I think he is a massive risk as well. But, I am not following as you why you think his career will be over so soon. Hasn't been real injured. Isn't slowing down physically.

kc (oakland)

Would it be a big mistake for Niners to go Spiller/Thomas or BAPs in 1strd ignoring O-Line help?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

I don't know what BAPs is. Sorry. But, I do think with those two first rounders, they must emerge with a RT. Other than that-with their entire draft-I think they can be aggressive with taking the best guys available including luxury type guys like Spiller.

Christopher (Atlanta)

who should atlanta draft

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

ATL must take the best DE or CB on the board at the time and do the opposite in round 2. Rarely do I say that, but unless they sign a free agent (obviously) those needs are just too great to ignore considering the rest of the squad. How about Graham from Michigan? Immediate help.

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Folks, that is a wrap for me. Great stuff as usual. Check back next Wed at noon.
