How's it? Chat queue is already overflowing, so let's get right to it. Overflow questions can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org to be considered for the show.
Do you think Rogers-Overeem should be for the title?
No. And I don't even care, quite frankly. I consider Fedor Emelianenko to be the Strikeforce champion. That belt just doesn't mean a whole lot.
Why is everyone making such a big deal over Mirs' comments? He stated that his mindset is to "kill" Brock Lesnar, he didnt say that he would do it. We all have heard much worse from MMA fighters and even worse comments in other sports.
I've tried to be pretty consistent with my stance, whether it be in last week's chat, on Twitter, or on MMA Live. I do feel that Frank was really just describing his mentality and that the entire situation has been overblown. But I do believe the way Mir verbalized it just hurts MMA's overall cause. The UFC is trying to get regulated in New York and the sport has made a lot of mainstream strides. So, it doesn't help when one of your high-profile fighters uses the phrase 'die due to Octagon-related inuries.' But I'm over it.
are there any mma radio shows on espn radio or any other national shows? if not there should be
I agree that ESPN Radio remains an untapped resource for MMA content and coverage. I am actively working to change that.
with king mo, mousasi, hendo, and aoki on the same card, do you think this could compete with some of the weaker ufc ppv cards? Not saying i think it should be a ppv, i love having good free cards, especially on cbs where the casual fan will be more likely to watch
Strikeforce's big shows are always stacked. The problem is, they happen too infrequently so they can never capitalize on previous momentum. They also need a lesson in how to promote. A card of this magnitude shouldn't be announced with just six weeks to spare. I just don't understand their methodology.
Hey Jon, any idea on who is next for Cain Velasquez? I say he should fight Dos Santos. What do you think?
Hey Darris. I understand why you like that fight, and you certainly are not alone in suggesting it. I just don't think it'll happen b/c the UFC won't want to waste an obvious contender by having two of the top contenders fight. I believe Dos Santos and Velasquez could both get title shots in 2010.
any word or rumors who is gonna headline ufc in boston
There are a lot of names floating out there right now. It's too early to say. So much will be determined between now and mid-April. I guarantee you the card will be drunk with talent/big names. The UFC will do it up for its first trip to Boston.
So Cro Cop is fighting Pat Barry, seems to me like the UFC decided it's time to stop giving Cro Cop tomato cans. How do you see that fight playing out?
I like the fight. Perfect test for both guys right now. If Cro Cop wants to remain relevant, he needs a good showing against a nice up-and-comer. And for Pat Barry, even though this isn't the prime version of Cro Cop, a (T)KO win would be a nice resume builder. I like Barry to get the finish.
Last week on MMA Live Chael Sonnen said that Anderson Silva has NEVER faced a wrestler in his career. Does the name Dan Henderson ring a bell? What's up the that Chael Sonnen. C'mon son
I did get in there to mention Hendo, but I was a little too late. Chael uses his wrestling as more of a base for MMA than Hendo does. That would probably have been Sonnen's explanation.
Who does the Machida-Shogun winner fight next?
TBD. I would think the Rampage-Rashad winner, provided he is healthy, would be next in line.
Both Bowles and Torres are fighting this weekend. Do you see any surprises or do you expect both to cruise to easy wins?
Definitely don't expect either guy to cruise to an easy win. Quite frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if both guys lose.
Jon, can you give me some WEC 47 picks? By the way you making the trip?
Wish I was Columbus-bound, but I won't be there. I really think the top two fights on the card could go either way. But I will take Brian Bowles to get the late finish of Dominick Cruz. And I'll back our guy Miguel Torres by unanimous decision over Benavidez. Also like Javier Vazquez by decision over Jens Pulver.
What are your thoughts on Stephen Neal saying he may get into MMA instead of resigning with the Pats?
I hope he gets into MMA. And I hope it continues a trend of former NFL guys trying their hand at MMA.
Hey Jon, here at working joining the chat. I am extremely intrigued with the potential of Phil Davis and Jon Jones, what is your take on this becoming the next big rivalry like a couture-lidell or lidell ortiz.
Certainly a possibility, Johnny. I'd still like to see more from Phil Davis, but both guys look like future contenders and possibly champions. A potential rivalry between the two would be a few years away, but you are definitely talking about two very bright futures.
Hey can you land me some free tix to the bellator boston show?
I wish man! Get a ton of ticket requests, and gotta take care of the family first.
I saw two comercials this week involving GSP and Rampage it is cool seeing MMA guys get endorsements
Amen. I'm glad you brought that up, Adrian. Always fires me up to see MMA continue its plunge into the mainstream.
Your thoughts on Bellator's open fight tryout for their Kansas City show. Seems too gimmicky for them to do. I expect that from SF instead of them.
It's actually not all that uncommon. You didn't know it, but Bellator had an open tryout in Florida last year, and it produced an awesome featherweight. His name escapes me right now. But I don't think it's that big a deal.
There's been rumbling that Fedor may fight Barnett in Japan. IF that were to happen, how competitive could it be given Barnett's been serving a suspension for a year?
It's a good question, but I expect Barnett to be plenty competitive when he returns. He's been fighting forever, and has had some lengthy layoffs in the past as well.
Where are the haters at? C'mon! Start bashing Marcus Davis like you did Frank Mir!!!!!
Do you even read my responses anymore? I didn't bash Mir. In fact, I did just the opposite. I think Marcus Davis' comments about Dan Hardy are actually far worse.
The GSP spot was cool. The Rampage one was a bit strange because it was it in no way resembled an MMA fight. He got hit, fell forward on his face, and his opponent waited for him to get up and recover before taking a haymaker.
I agree. But press is press.
I would much rather see Velasquez fight Brock for the title than the Mir/Carwin winner which I think Mir will win, I rather see fight 1 between Brock and Cain before Brock/Mir III
No argument from me. And I think the UFC would really like to strike while the iron is hot with Velasquez. I think they'll be looking for any excuse to give Cain the first shot at Brock. We shall see.
your thoughts on charlie brenneman? do you think the spaniard will make some noise?
Very intelligent guy who just gets it. Looking forward to his UFC debut.
who u got forrest or lil nog
Interesting to see that Griffin is a pretty sizable underdog (+190). Not a great match-up for him against a more technical striker, but I have been burned by Forrest too many times and am inclined to think he'll pull off the upset.
Miguel Torres is convinced that the loss will actually make him better, are you buy or selling that one?
I'll buy it. I think Torres took his own success for granted and needed a swift kick in the groin. He is clearly refocused and rededicated, and I think we will see the fruits of that labor Saturday night. But don't sleep on Benavidez, who is fully capable of escaping Columbus with a win.
when will we see Heath Herring again?
Not sure dude.
Tim Silvia Vs. The Worlds Strongest Man, will that loss be his wake-up call that its time to hang up the gloves?
Not happening. Pudzianowski is fighting someone else. I think he would smash Sylvia.
Have you seen any of K-Flo's acting abilities? Any comments.
Much funnier off-camera than on. I've told him as much. He busts my stones non-stop in the green room. Then, we get on set and he is a Boy Scout.
Jon - I know where you stand, and didn't mean to imply that you were a hater. I just get frustrated that the media and chatters here alike crucified Frank or his comments and I don't see any backlash over Davis's comments
I hear ya, Jay. I just think a lot of media and fans are frustrated that someone with Mir's IQ would take it so far. I agree we've heard similar commentary in the past, but you can understand why the UFC was outraged with Mir. As for Davis, I've lost some respect for him. Gotta get over it, ya know?
Who wins Mamed Khalidov or Hector Lombard?
Great question. If Hector Lombard is on, I think he'd be a tad too physical for Khalidov.
Who are the top 3 highest paid UFC fighters right now? (per fight?
Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar are in the top three. Not exactly sure.
what up jon.... favorite time and day! do u see chuck lidell fighting kimbo providing he wins againts tito
Thanks, Hectec. Yes, I really think that fight will happen. Even if Liddell loses to Ortiz, I think a fight against Kimbo Slice makes sense on a number of levels.
Who earns a title shot first, Ryan Bader or Bones Jones?
Assuming Mousasi gets passed Mo... how many more fights until we see him in the UFC?
I believe he has 3-5 fights left on his Strikeforce contract. So don't hold your breath.
Direct TV and Versus- any news on them getting back together??? Also will we see Jon Jones entrance to "Angry Johnny" broadcasted?
I know WEC VP Peter Dropick remains optimistic, and the dialogue is ongoing. But we've heard that for months now and remain without a resolution. It's not getting done before March 21st. As for 'Angry Johnny', b/c it's the main event, I think we will get to see the Jones entrance. Gives me chills every time.
Any thoughts on next TUF cast. Looks really deep on talent and just as deep on Tools, should be a good season.
Can't say I share your enthusiasm. There are a couple of former Bellator guys in the cast that midly pique my interest. But overall, I think the show has run its course. And the Liddell-Ortiz angle doesn't really do anything for me in 2010.
Best chance to pull off an upset: Hardy, Edgar or Maia?
Difficult, if not impossible to answer. But I'll say Dan Hardy. Self-belief is a powerful thing.
Mayweather and Mosley. Genuine dislike? Or WWE-style theatrics to build hype?
It's a combination. I know Mosley has legit animosity towards Floyd b/c he believes Mayweather has been ducking him for years. And I know Floyd was irritated when Mosley was paraded into the ring after Floyd beat Juan Manuel Marquez. I bought my tickets yesterday and can't wait for May 1st!
Where are you sitting at for the Mayweather-Mosely fight?
Not close to the ring. But I'm in the building! And excited to share my passion w/ my family and friends, as opposed to sitting in the media section.
How do you think Mayorga will fare against Din Thomas?
Kudos to Shine Fights for giving Mayorga a high-level mixed martial artist in his MMA debut. I think it could be a quick night for Mayorga. Also props to Din Thomas for taking the fight, b/c he has a lot to lose. He's representing MMA against a pro boxer. Must represent well.
Jon, love the show. Thanks for doing the chat. If Hardy or Edgar manage to pull off the upset, are St. Pierre or Penn in line for an immediate rematch?
Thanks, Rick. I think if Penn wins, he will move up to welterweight and commit to that division. Should GSP lose, I think he might get an immediate rematch against Hardy. Or fight Koscheck or Daley. But I don't think there will be anything 'immediate' about a third fight between Penn and St. Pierre.
So, I have to ask, what did you think of the MMA Live Rap?
Awesome. Really appreciate all of our great fans. Perhaps a bit surpised at just how well done the rap was.
For the record, I personally was so upset w/ Mir's comments because he's a prominent figure in MMA. No offense to Marcus but I doubt only a small handful read his comments (via twitter). That doesn't make it ok but makes it easier to sweep under the carpet and not acknowledge it. :)
Very true. The spoken word is far more powerful than a tweet. And Mir, a former two-time UFC heavyweight champion, is far more high-profile than Marcus Davis.
Erin Andrews opened the door for ESPN employees on dancing with the stars. When can I expect to see you on there?
Hahaha. Thanks bro, but no one knows who I am! I would do DWTS in a millisecond. Maybe someday. But thrilled for EA. Can't wait to see how she does, and it gives me a reason to watch.
Jon, why do we not see any original articles and analysis on ESPN MMA? Most of the media is straight from Sherdog.
There are a lot of factors, many of which I don't have time to get into. I think you will continue to see an increase in the amount of ESPN-rooted MMA content. I know I'd like to expand my role on espn.com. Hopefully we have an MMA Live podcast within the next few months.
What athlete would you like to see an MMA?
It's a long list. Patrick Willis sits at the top of it. Also would like to see David West. Both of those guys have trained in boxing/MMA.
How has training been for your b/f Kenny?
More to prove: Brian Bowles or Miguel Torres?
Good question. But it's got to be Miguel Torres. Two straight losses after a 17-fight unbeaten streak would be a tough pill to swallow.
Your pick for Mousasi v Mo, Melendez v Aoki and Hendo v Shields? I don't see anyway that Shields wins. Aoki (can he wear the long pants?) should sub Melendez, and Mousasi will head kick Mo into next week.
Way too early to give predictions for fights that are six weeks away. Melendez-Aoki could go either way, but I might have to go against Gil there. Hendo seems like the bet, but Shields loves proving me and others wrong. And King Mo is more ready for the challenge that is Mousasi than people think. But I still think he'll be a bit overaggressive and get caught, somehow.
I know you and pretty much everyone else considers Fedor to be the Strikeforce HW Champ. So why doesn't Strikeforce just strip Overheem of the belt?
We are hoping to have Scott Coker on MMA Live tomorrow. If that happens, I will be sure to ask him.
Get Bill Simmons on MMA Live, it will be good for the show. Awesome chat btw.
Thanks man. Would love to have Simmons on MMA Live, and would love to talk MMA on his podcast sometime. Sounds like a fair deal to me.
Do think Herchel Walker will contiune fighting and who do you see him fighting?
I am skeptical. I'd like to see him be done after the one fight, unless he wants to beat up Jose Canseco first. But I don't need to see him fight any legitimate MMA athlete. I don't believe that would end well.
With you being involved with WAMMA, when was the last communication you received from them?
Bill "The Sports Guy" Simmons did a 3-hour chat the other week. Up to the challenge one of these days?
If I had the day off, I would chat all day. Right now, I work it into the work day, so it's tough to do more than an hour. But at some point in 2010, I promise to do a 3 hour, 1 minute chat.
Anik... Do you think we see Paul Daley vs Rumble Johnson at some point in 2010? It's the most exciting 170 fight not involving GSP right?
That's a strong possiblity. But I know Paul Daley has greater aspirations than that right now. He can taste a title shot. Rumble needs to string some wins together to be in contention.
Who's going to fill in for Kenny on MMA Live tomorrow?
Make sure to give us a few weeks notice for us to call in sick.
What's up JA? Been a long time. With fighters training and turning pro at a much younger age, how do you think this will affect the length of someone like Jon Jones' career?
Interesting question, Jarrett. There is no doubt MMA careers/training are starting earlier and earlier these days. I also think it's a young man's sport, even though guys like Randy Couture challenge my theory.
Did you watch the Kaufman fight on Saturday? One of the most boring fights EVER...ask Pat about it tomorrow
Thought it was a pretty brutal card top to bottom.
Best casino to host a fight in Vegas?
Mandalay Bay. Old reliable.
How about a Best of MMA Live episode at some point? Rashad's mom calling in has to be in the top five moments.
We did a special year-end show after our first year on the air. Our 100th show is coming up on April 8th, and I believe the producers have something special planned. Will keep y'all posted.
Simmons used to be the man, now all he does is talk basketball. JA is the new man!!!
If you had Bill Simmons on MMA Live what's the over/under before he starts talking about LeBron? I say 65.5 seconds.
Dude knows his hoops. Much more than this dude knows his MMA!
I know you're friends with a lot of the fighters who do the show, but who has the most potential as an analyst (full-time job) when they are done fighting?
Hard to argue with Florian's polish. Rashad just needs repetitions. He could be a star. And you all know how I feel about Mir as an analyst.
I love MMA, but this PPV, showtime crap is getting rediculous! I feel so out of the loop.... any help coming?
I know, it's difficult. No one said it was cheap to be a combat sports fan. It cost me $1300 to buy four terrible seats to Mosley-Mayweather. Hopefully you get Versus, b/c WEC 47 is this Saturday night and all that promotion does is deliver.
Forget Simmons - get Cowherd!
I know Colin well. He is a good man. And he respects MMA b/c he is all about ratings. And MMA's ratings are consistently high and crush it in the desired demographic.
What is your thoughts on number of rounds there should be? I hear lots of people advocate for every fight, or at least #1 contender fights going to 5 rounds like title bouts.
I don't want every fight to be five rounds. I like the sense of urgency that is required in a 15-minute fight. But I would agree that No. 1 contender bouts, like title fights, should be five-rounders.
Is Mir really as good as people hype him to be. And does he really think he has a chance against lesnar
I do believe Mir is as good as advertised. Especially at this stage of his career. He destroys fringe contenders like Cheick Kongo. And, as much as I love Cain Velasquez, he couldn't finish Kongo. And I do think Mir believes he can beat Brock. But he knows it's the most difficult fight out there for him.
Hey Jonny! I know you had to love Mosley and Floyd about to scrap during their press conference. Have to admit, i like that fight even more than Floyd-Pac. Gonna be electric.
You are probably in the minority for liking it more than Pacquiao-Mayweather. But I share your enthusiasm and can't wait to be there.
settle a debate w my brother.... i think the current talent is stronger than it was 5yrs ago! what do u thnk???
Yes. More talent across the board. The talent at the top is more elite. And the overall depth is better.
Jon what do i have to do for espn to put you guys on tv? Next week im going to stand in front of the building with a sign and i wont leave till your on.
What about Josh Elliott? He was great with the Brock interview.
Josh is a good friend and really enjoys and knows his MMA. But he'd be more of a fill-in for yours truly, as opposed to a guest. So don't give him any ideas, please.
Mir did beat Lesnar already.... and is a two-time champ. I think he's as good as people say.
What about fights that are too close to call, having an extra round, like on TUF?
I just think judges need to be more liberal with 10-10 and 10-8 rounds. I think that is the easiest solution. I also would like to see judges afforded the opportunity to change their score for a given round. For example, the first round is close, but a judge scores it 10-9 Machida. Second round is one-sided and the judge scores is 10-9 Machida. Go back and make the first round a 10-10 round.
Jens Pulver is making another "return" to the ring after losing 6 of his last 7 with only 1 going the distance. Is this the last we see of Little Evil because for his sake, i hope so.
Yes, I believe this will be his final fight. And, I know some have said the WEC handpicked Javier Vazquez to try and get Pulver a win. I don't see it that way. Showtime Vazquez is a well-versed veteran and he needs the win almost as badly as Pulver does.
I think Dos Santos is a bit overrated Anik. Who has he ever faced thats in their prime and a good fighter? Lets see him against Kongo and Velasquez or even a good up and comer like Todd Duffe right? He's beating cream puffs!
Fair enough. I've just been very impressed with the manner in which he has won. Let's see what he does in three weeks. Also, Todd Duffee is tentatively scheduled to join us tomorrow on MMA Live. Will keep you posted on Twitter.
Any interest by the UFC in Mamed Khalidov? Where do you rank him vs Sonnen, Maia, Marquart, Belfort?
I don't think he's in that class just yet. But you can be sure the UFC---and other major U.S. promotions---are keeping tabs on Khalidov. We've been singing his praises in this space for almost two years.
Now that MMA is sanctioned in Alabama, do you see the UFC coming to either Birmingham or Mobile in the next 2 years or are we going to be stuck with King of the Cage and such?
Hard to say. Alabama is not the priority that other markets are, like Boston, for example. But once MMA gets sanctioned, the UFC is pretty bullish in getting at least one card there. So be patient. The Octagon will get there eventually.
What are your thoughts on the strikeforce broadcast team? I personally cant stand them. They make it hard to watch.
Everyone has their preferences, Jacob. I'm sure there are people out there that didn't like my play-by-play work with Bellator. Most of the feedback for announcers is negative. So I just try to blend in, and let the fighters be the stars.
Anik what kind of chance do you give Paul Daley against Koscheck? I think Kos has more skills but if he elects to stand like he did against rumble I think he'll wake up looking at te ceiling saying what happened.
Agree with you, Riley.
I saw a bottom line score on a UFC fight on ESPN2, baby steps right? Any chance of highlights on SC?
SportsCenter runs highlights after most of the big UFC shows. Bottom line presence continues to increase. All good things.
Jon you should have come to Dallas. Cost me 1200 for ok seats. Plus we get to watch the UFO sized big screen.
Yeah, but I'm a Mayweather guy. I've covered 6 Pacquiao fights, and he's electric. But if I'm shelling out coin, it's for Floyd.
Will the UFC ever have a Fighters Code of Conduct that all must obey, like the NFL?
Good question. On the heels of Mir and now Marcus Davis' comments, that ideal may not be too far off.
When is MMA Live going to be on ESPN? Instead of just the internet.
Hopefully soon my man.
Hi Mr Anik.. I was wondering if you think that with additional fights you think Todd Duffee will become a heavyweight title contender? Thank you.
Yes I do, Kamir. I know the sample size is small, but from everything we hear, he's got the tools and make-up to be a force.
JDS did smash Werdum, not a complete cream puff.
Yep, Cain's KO at UFC 110 was on the Top Ten list on SportsCenter. Also, still having auto-update issues with the chat.
Ugh. Sorry 'bout that.
Do you really think that Mariusz Pudzianowski would beat Tim Sylvia? In his 1st fight, Pudzian looked like a soccer hulligan kicking the crap out of someone. Very little skill was shown.
I do, Cody. Sylvia is just a fat, out-of-shape dude right now.
is Lesnar allowed back in to Canada?
Brock goes wherever he wants.
If Rumble beats John Howard do you think a fight with him and Ben Saunders would be interesting for the 170 pound division? 2 tall athletic strikers. I LIKE!
Works for me.
What did Davis say? Must have missed that
I won't dignify his idiotic comments in this space. Try Google or any MMA website.
Would you rank Shogun ahead of Machida in the 205 ranks? I see a few do and I totally agree
If you scored that fight for Shogun, I can see why one would make that argument. I still have Machida at No. 1, in large part b/c the scorecards that matter gave him the nod.
I think MMA Live on TV is like MMA regulation in New York. It should've happened at least a year ago, and no one is quite sure why it hasn't happened yet.
What's on tap for tomorrow's show?
Pat Miletich in Bristol. Possible interviews with Scott Coker and Todd Duffee, as well as a WEC 47 preview.
Hi Jon! I'm sorry for this stupid question, but would a move to television mean that it wouldn't be available anymore on espn.com? Just wanted to ask because it's my only possibility to watch your great show.
Given how loyal all of you have been, I find it hard to believe that the show would no longer be available at espn.com. Not to worry.
Way to go Brian with the POST OF THE WEEK!
Yeah, that was good stuff.
What does a win over Randy Couture do for Rich Franklin? If they're seriously considering Couture a title contender.
Couture has won two straight and is absolutely considered a contender. Thus, it's an important fight for Franklin.
I like the Pride rule of being able to knee a downed opponent. You? Any chance of this rule coming to UFC?
Hate that rule. Just think it's unnecessarily dangerous. I cringe when I see a downed opponent take a knee to the head.
Wow, i just saw Davis's comments...what an idiot
Arlovski sure picked a tough test in agreeing to fight Big Foot Silva after getting smashed by Rogers. I think that Silva is a better fighter than Rogers. Thoughts, Jon?
I agree, Marvin. Big Foot is versatile, and will give AA all he can handle.
Happy NHL trade deadline day to you Jon!
You too! Looks like my Boston Bruins have punted on their season.
What's one round you would show someone who has never seen an MMA fight? As a boxing fan it's a toss up for me between round 9 of Gatti- Ward 1 and the last round of Corrales and Castillo
What's so great about MMA is that there are so many to choose from. Every promotion has several candidates. What stands out to me- Bellator's first season- Jorge Masvidal destroying Toby Imada before Imada locks in on an out-of-nowhere inverted triangle to end the fight. UFC has a million to choose from. Maybe the third round between Nate Quarry and Tim Credeur.
Round 3: Forrest -Griffin TUF Finale.
An obvious choice.
I live in Canada so I don't get ESPN but i was wondering. Jon, are you ever on ESPN itself? Like maybe doing sports highlights or whatever?
I do a lot of video stuff for espn.com/ESPN Digital Media. I voice NBA/NHL/MLB highlights several nights/week for espn.com. Used to work for ESPN Radio, and looking forward to getting back in that mix this year. Also hoping to soon get a shot on ESPNEWS and perhaps do some play-by-play. But MMA is really my priority.
ooppss - Forrest Griffin - Stephan Bonnar in the TUF Finale
That...is the obvious choice. Knew what you meant.
Do you think Tyron Woodley could make an immediate splash in the UFC WW division?
That dude would make a splash in a pool without water.
Why hasn't Dan Hardy been trying to get into the Head of GSP. Hardy has a knack for it. He left Davis and Swick in pyschological ruins. I think Hardy if fearful of an angry GSP
Just wait until you see the UFC Primetime specials, or so I'm told.
Jon you should be the host of sports reporters i see you as a young dick schapp
Haha. Thanks dude.
Alright, folks. Thanks for your time, as always. I gotta bounce. Hope to see you all right back here tomorrow for MMA Live. Until next week's chat, be safe. And don't text and drive. -JA
