Oops. Linked into wrong room for a second and was about to answer NFL questions. Not that I couldn't, having covered the sport for more than 11 years. Just caught me off guard. Back with you guys now. It's snowing outside and I'm ready to go.
Will JR Motorsports run the #7 in the Nationwide Series race at Bristol since Danica Patrick is racing in the IZOD IndyCar Series? If so with who?
No plans to run the 7 while Danica is out. Sponsor GoDaddy.com was only in the NW for her.
Why is Danica Patrick very upset about leaving NASCAR to race in the IZOD IndyCar Series for 4 months?
Not sure upset is the right word. Think she was simply having fun learning a new thing and hated to leave what may be her future in motorsports.
Why doesn't a team like Gibbs or Rousch try to hire away Knaus. When his contract is up, can't they throw a bunch of $ his way?
They could, but Knaus isn't interested in leaving and has basically agreed to stay with Hendrick for a very long time. No need to run to another team and prove something.
Do u think ron malec can get the crew chief job of the 24
He probably could if Mr. Hendrick felt the need for a change and Gordon wanted one. Look, Letarte was a sitting duck with the call he made. What would you guys be saying if Gordon had taken four tires and lost?
Dave, be sure to bring home some dog biscuits.....and a Danica souvenir! Arf
Funny. Earnie is chowing down on left-over pizza while I chat. Don't think Danica needs me to buy a souvenir. She has sold more than almost any driver the past three weeks.
your opinion, when is the first race i will see the 5 car in winner circle this season? Hes already off to a better start this year. Ofcourse JJ needs to start sharing some wins.
Could be any race with Martin. Everybody needs to figure out how to beat Johnson. That team is on fire and there's no reason to think anything, even the new spoiler, will slow it down.
So where do u think kasey k. will end up next year....Rfr in the 6 or at jgr
Haven't heard any rumblings about the 6. I'm betting either JGR or Hendrick Motorsports.
If Mark Martin retire dis year who do u see gettin in the 5
See previous answer. Seriously.
David, how many different drivers will be at RPM next year? Any idea who? (Ecspecially the way Allmendinger and Salder have run)
That could be a mess after the season, particularly if Kahne leaves. As for what drivers will step in, who knows. My bet is they won't find many better than AJ or Sadler.
ANY LUCK FINDING JIMMIE JOHNSON'S GOLDEN HORSESHOE?
Didn't you see the photo-shopped picture of him carrying it in his left hand through the garage?
Hey David Newton. Hope everything is good for you. I know that Harvick will be the best driver to beat JJ this weekend. Is there any other few drivers who has better chance this weekend?
Sure. Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, Martin and even Dale Jr. are great at Atlanta. This could be the best race we've see thus far.
David - Great article on Bodine. So what are you going to write about next week if the 48 wins at the ATL? What about Hank Parker, Jr.'s resurficing in the Outdoors show with his father and brother?
Like the Hank Parker angle. Will keep it under consideration.
Do you think 88 is capable of a top 10 finish this week in ATL
Definitely. This is one of Junior's favorite tracks. It wouldn't surprise me to see all four Hendrick cars in the top 10.
Do you think Denny will have a strong rebound after his lack-luster first three races?
He needs one, but I recall him saying they probably would get off to a slow start. Guess he knew what he was talking about.
And how about Joey Logano carrying the JGR flag through the first three. Pretty impressive for the 19-year-old.
looks like rcr cars are on target and the hendrick cars of jeff and jimmie as well but also ive noticed young logano is steppin in the mix in your opinion is the joey momentum a fluke and who are ur picks and dark horses for the chase and the atlanta race and also will any body beat jimmie this weekend finally thanks
What a coincidence, a Joey question. He's no fluke. As Mark Martin said when Logano was in diapers, he's the real deal. I'd go as far as to put Joey as a long-shot to make the chase, although in that equipment and with his talent he should. As for beating Jimmie, a driver I left out earlier with picks for the weekend is Carl Edwards. Don't be surprised to see him give the 48 a run for its money.
I know it's early, but do you think Jimmie Johnson can keep up this pace, and take home another consecutive championship?
Oh, I think he'll win the next 33 races and run away with the thing. Lap the field. Maybe jump over and win the Nationwide Series title as well. Sorry, couldn't help myself. Would it surprise me if Johnson won 10 or more races and another title? Not at all. It shouldn't suprise anybody. But it's way too early. Remember Matt Kenseth won the first two races last year and then disappeared. Michael Waltrip was in the top 12 this time a year ago. Just saying ...
Hey David, do you think the new inspection policy NASCAR announced yesterday will reduce the number of start and park teams that show up, or will those teams simply race more of the race in order to avoid being the car that is torn down?
I don't think it will change a thing to be honest.
is the 48 pit crew getting enough credit for Vegas? Chad called for 4 but if those guys don't bust an 11.6 Jimmie has to pass more cars & may not have enough tires/laps to pass Jeff - thoughts?
Think you said it all. Thanks.
So what's the latest at EGR? JPM and JMac gonna play nice at Atlanta?
All is good. They texted and made up.
is dupont gonna stay with gordon after this season cause they are only signed thru this year and do you think jeff will be getting a new crew chief any time soon
Hearing they may stay on but for fewer races. Stay tuned.
is joey logano gonna make a name for hisself in nascar
Don't you think he already has to a degree. I mean, he was called the real deal by Mark Martin before he ran a race.
Knaus to the 88, McGrew to the 48. They battle for the title, Johnson gets his due as a great racer, Knaus gets his due as an amazing crew chief. They both show they can win without each other, Jr. gets back on track. It's a win-win-win for everyone. Why hasn't this happened yet!
Not sure Johnson would count it as a victory, although I believe he could win the title with McGrew. Seriously, do you think Chad and Earnhardt could co-exist. I believe we'd hear a loud explosion from the shop in Concord after a few weeks.
If Letarte made the call and took 4 for Jeff, but JJ beat him anyway with 4, then you tip you hat to JJ and try to beat him at Atlanta.
Botom line, Letarte felt pretty sure more teams would take two. If he took four and the other teams took two and Gordon restarted further back and didn't win people would be complaining then as well.
Hey David, what would a Nascar Chat be without asking about the next race. Who you got for a top 5 this weekend and gives us a darkhorse?
Johnson, Edwards, Martin, Gordon, Harvick and darkhorse Dale Jr.
hendrick wont have any openings will they and is joe gibbs gonna open another team
Gibbs has been hinting at another team for a few years and as soon as a sponsor steps forward will do so. Budweiser would be a nice touch, don't you think? And Hendrick could have an opening if somebody decided they didn't want to drive next year.
NASCAR fan here but wondered if you had an opinion on Lebron James changing his number to 6 and if he is aware of who had this number first(Bill Russell), who is very important to NBA history, sounds a little short sighted to me...Thanks... if you answer...
I actually was thinking of the great Dr. J in the No. 6. I don't know. If Lebron wants to be different take a number no great NBA player has worn. Like 88.
will an rcr car drop jimmie off the podeum this season in the championship hunt
Maybe, but I still see a gold medal run for the 48
I haven't seen the final numbers posted for the Nationwide race, but did see somebody say that the race and the Cavs/Celtics game from Thursday night were the only sports programs that made cable's top 100 programs for the week. BTW- the Cavs/Celtics did a 1.8 US rating/2.8 million viewers
Didn't see the Nationwide numbers either. Saw the Cup numbers took a hit, but that was against the gold medal hockey game that was pretty unbelievable.
I was wondering your opionion on Record keeping and trying to figure out who really is the best driver in history in Nascar. Like in all sports and espically in Nascar its hard to me to say who is the best driver just by championships because though JJ has a great run going Gordon would have more championships now then he does if they never went to the chase and Chances are Earnheart would have more titles in the chase. Becauase the cars, tracks, and system changes so much how can you really keep records and say someone is probably the greatest driver.
It's all subjective as it is with any sport. There are great players in every era and we are seeing one of the greatest now in Johnson.
Hi Newton and Ernie! We are three races into the season and the top 35 is coming together. Who's in and who is left out??
Just finished looking over those numbers. No offense, but no significant team should be left out. Newman is on the fence again, but that team is too good to fall completely out unless complete catastrophe strikes the next two weeks. Those that should be concerned, however, are Newman, Ambrose, Keselowski and maybe even Montoya.
Do you think the 88 will Finish in the top 10 this week
Let me look into my cyrstal Amp Ball. Yep.
Steven Wallace seems to get better every week. When might we see him make the jump to Sprint Cup, and will it be with RWI or another team?
I would gets RWI or an RWI alliance with another team if it happens anytime within the next year.
Kahne to HMS? Who have you heard is leaving and where are they going?
You weren't paying attention. The following question was who would replace Martin if he decided to retire after this season. I never said Martin would retire. Was just saying what if. Right now there is no indication there'll be any change at HMS. Just stirring the pot.
Why did you make fun of curling last week, IT ROCKS, and it does take serious skill to be good at it!! Any chance Harvick wins this weekend?
I never made fun of curling. I love that sport. Watched it more last week than anything NASCAR related. Why did you think I was poking fun? As for Harvick, a very good chance. He loves Atlanta and believes he'll win.
Are any of you in the Stock Car Challenge?
Not at the moment. Think I could win?
QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON at 2.40PM HO DAVID WHO DO YOU HAVE FOR ATLANTA SUNDAY
As i said earlier, Johnson, Edwards, Martin, Gordon, Kurt Busch and Harvick. Oh, you want one driver. I'll go with Harvick.
Juniors pitcrew lost him at least 3 spots every time he came into pit. And its not like its the first time its happened. Are there any plans to get these guys up to par? 16 second pit stops sure aren't doing Junior any favors, and I am sure if I was talking about the 48 pit crew, heads would alreadybe rolling....
Lance McGrew can roll heads pretty good himself. We'll keep an eye on it.
I know this gets asked alot but it never really gets answered: We all know the teams around the garage are frustrated with JJ dominance but do they complain and make excuses like all the fans do? (Such as "Man if he did have Knaus this wouldn't be happening...")
I've never heard one team seriously complain about Johnson winning. Most drivers agree it is their job to get better and beat the 48. If they are complaining then they aren't spending enough time improving.
whats your top 12 chase drivers for the season
In no particular order, Johnson, Martin, Gordon, Harvick, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Jeff Burton, Joey Logano, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Hey David, what 2 or 3 drivers do you think are in the biggest "funk" to start the season?
I'd have to say Newman and maybe Keselowski, but not sure funk is the way to descrie it. Just haven't had things go their way.
With you guys picking Carl last year and Denny this year (off to a bad start).....can you please pick Jimmie or a Busch brother to win it all next year. I think there is an ESPN writers curse!
I never picked Denny. I picked Kyle but said I'd be crazy to pick against Jimmmie. So don't put the curse factor on me. I picked JJ last year as well.
they changed the championship to the chase to make it more competative if jimmie wins five is there going to be talk to change it again
It's still more competitive, which makes what he's accomplished that much more impressive. So I am saying no, although it always is subjetive to minor tweaks.
Nice article by Hinton on Suitcase Jake. Do you have any favorite memories of him?
Not really. Wasn't really around the sport when he was in his prime.
Guess who??!! Biffle! I was very pleased to see Biffle go to the slate in Vegas over the weekend and crack the Top 10. I think any fan loves to see their driver to the slate hard and with power! Do you see any checkered flags in Biffle's future this season, for old times' sake? Oy vey and good luck!
The Biff definitely is due. He just left two of his best tracks. If he doesn't win at Atlanta you might have to wait a while. Bristol and Martinsville aren't likely spots for wins.
the "loosening of the rules" to put the racing "back in the drivers" hands hasn't really shown up yet this season. is it just too early to see any changes in the racing from this rules change?
I disagree. NASCAR has done a good job of letting the drivers handle things on the track. Daytona was a great example if it weren't for the hole distraction. Did you really think there was going to be a lot more contact and drivers taking each other out. They still are racing for points and a chance for the title.
David,Has there been rumblings about Kahne going to Hendrick? What car would he drive?
Really, no rumblings. Somebody just asked what would happen if Martin decided to make this his last season. I suggested Kahne might be a likely target. Hey, it's way too early to get silly season that silly.
How do you think Truex will do in Atlanta?
Haven't given it a lot of thought, but he's been good there before so if the equipment is solid I'd say top 15 should be reasonable. And if you are in the top 15 anything can happen.
Will the JM and JPM spat continue to be an issue all season?
Don't think so. They exchanged text messages and seem to be OK. Things were said in the heat of the moment. It happens. As Montoya said, time to move on.
you said dupont will be on limited who will be the primary sponsor then do you think
They still could be primary, just not for as many races. Jeff already has National Guard for a handful or races and Pepsi for one or two as well I believe.
Do you know why the 78 car does not put any associate decals on the front of the car like everyone else does. Makes it look strange.
Honestly, haven't noticed. My guess is it puts what sponsors it has where they get the most visibility.
i think the rcr has there stuff together this season i know its early but do you see all three of the teams makin the chase this season
They did it before this season so there's no reason to think they won't this year, particularly with what we've seen thus far. I really like the way Harvick's team has come together in particular.
is the baby a distraction for carl to win races i mean matt and biffle have been running great and what happen to kyle buschs momentum looks liek the cars are not clicking
He's only had the baby for one race. Way to early to form an opinion on that one. And honestly, I don't think it is a distraction or will become one. They were running poorly last year and there wasn't a baby.
Why does NASCA turn left instead of right? This is a serious question
Guess that was the direction the cars were pointed in the first race and it became habit. Seriously, I have never thought about it. And they do turn right on road courses.
Jr. increases performance when spoilers come back, especially at speedways. What are your thoughts?
The cars will drive more loose than ever, so that favors several drivers, including Johnson and maybe Edwards. Not sure Junior will like it as much as them.
Denny Hamlin's contract runs out this year, right? If his season continues to be bad, do you see him looking elsewhere?
He's acutally tied up for several more years, at least that's what Joe Gibbs told me at Daytona.
Well guys and gals, I have to go get ready for NASCAR Now at 5 pm. As usual, sorry I couldn't get to all the questions. If there is something you really want asked send it to me on Twitter at DNewtonespn and I'll do my best to get to it. Later
